Includes a review of the state-of-the-art of explosives loading in the crushed stone and cement industries of South Florida and the development of a field test program for alternatives. Emphasis is on the loading of small diameter (2 1/4" or less) explosives. Test results ire evaluated for operational and economic feasibility. Details are described of an explosives loading method which involves placing cardboard tubes with external couplings through the hollow drill steel and then Loading explosives into the tube casings after the drill rig has moved off. This method eliminates the hazards peculiar to loading explosives Through the kelly bar. The alternative method can be performed by existing drill rigs with or without minor modification. With modification, improvement in yield per blasthole and/or primary crushing rate provides opportunity so offset some or all of the additional cost.

This paper is the first part of a report giving the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-third semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will give a more detailed discussion of the whole survey. Results of the determination of copper-strip corrosion, color, sulphur content, copper-dish evaporation residue, and gum content as given by the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method will be presented in the second paper, which will also include the prevailing retail price and the tax at the time the sample was taken. This paper deals specifically with data relative to gravity, Reid vapor pressure,5 and distillation (method 100.13).6 The samples tested were divided into "competitive-price gasolines" and "premium-price motor fuels," a method of presentation that was begun with the twenty-second semiannual survey.7 A total of 312 samples were collected from service station pumps in 20 cities throughout the United States. Of this number of samples, 207 were "competitive-price gasolines" and 105 were "premium-price motor fuels." All of the samples were collected in March, 1931, and analyzed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Miner at Bartlesville, Okla.

Microflotation and surface chemical studies were conducted on a chromite from the Stillwater Complex in Montana and on some of the minerals usually found to be associated with such chromites. Considering the chromite it was found that aging the ground mineral in air or heating it markedly affected its flotation behavior. Much of the observed effects could be attributed to oxidation reactions involving surface chromium and iron species. Strongly acid pretreating the mineral appeared to reverse such effects. Thus, it can be concluded that the manner in which the mineral (or the ore) is pretreated is of utmost importance in its flotation. Work carried out on associated gangue minerals determined how they are likely to behave in a flotation environment and how certain foreign ions derived from a chromite ore itself can affect their surface characteristics and, thus, presumably also their behavior in a flotation circuit.

"INTRODUCTION Limestone (which consists essentially of calcium carbonate) and dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate) occur widely in the United States. Their presence is of vast economic importance, because they are used much more extensively than any other form of rock. In 1945, limestone (which, broadly, includes dolomite) was quarried in every State except Delaware, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Rhode Island, and also in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Total production (including that used in cement and lime manufacture) exceeded 151,700,000 tons, or 79 percent of the quantity of all kinds of stone sold or used during that year.Important well-known uses of limestone are as concrete aggregate, road material, railroad ballast, for liming the land, for cement manufacture, as riprap for shore protection, harbor work, and spillways at dams, and as building stone.. None of these uses, however, are considered herein. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the industrial and chemical uses that are less widely known and yet are of tremendous importance in a great variety of processing industries. Important examples are dolomite as a refractory furnace lining and limestone as a fluxing agent in blast furnaces, and as a raw material employed in sugar, paper, glass, and alkali manufacture.PRIOR REPORTIn May 1941, the Bureau issued a report 4/ that described these uses in some detail. As new and important developments have taken place during the ensuing years, a revision and representation of the salient features of these uses seem desirable. Asphalt filler and mineral wool uses included in the earlier report are omitted from this paper because they are identified more closely with the highway and building industries, respectively, than with the industrial applications."

Much has been written of the changes undergone by coal in storage and the deterioration of coal through exposure to the weather. In order to obtain definite information for the benefit of the Government departments and of all who store coal in large quantitieS', a series . of tests was begun in the fall of 1909 under the supervision of tT. A. Holmes, then chief technologist of the United States Geological Survey, and was continued by the Bureau of Mines after its establishment in 1910. The tests were confined to determinations of the loss in heating value of the coals and did not include a study of other deterioration; for exaIp.ple, in coking quality or the yield of by-products in coking. The Bureau of Yards and Docks of the Navy Department cooperated in tests of New R~ver (W. Va.) coal, a variety largely used by the Navy. A preliminary report presenting a brief account of the early results of these tests has been published by the Bureau of Mines as Technical Paper 16.a The detailed report is presented in this bulletin, which gives a fu11 account of the tests and the analytical data covering a period of five years' storage. Data of somewhat similar experiments for shorter periods with gas coal from the Pittsburgh bed, with Pocahontas coal on the Isthmus of Panama, and with Sheridan, Wyo., subbituminous coal, which is used for railroad and other purposes in the West, are included. The tests of New River coal, in cooperation with the Navy Department, were undertaken to determine the advantage to be gained by storing coal under water, and particularly under salt water. Small lots were used in order to make the tests of maximum severity, and parallel experiments were made with run-of-mine and crushed coal under one-fourth inch size. All of the small lots tested under the different conditions (except those tested near Key West, Fla.) were taken as representative portions from one large original lot. The tests of Pocahontas coal, which, like the New River, is semibituminous, were undertaken chiefly to determine th.e effect of the tropical conditions in Panama. They were made on an outdoor pile of 100 tons of run-of-mine coal. Pittsburgh gas coal, a high-volatile, bituminous type used at gas and by-product coke works, was exposed for test at Ann Arbor, Mich., in cooperation with the University of Michigan. The university agreed to make tests at successive intervals of storage to determine, in its illuminating-gas experiment station, the yields of gas and byproducts from the coal. The coal, screened lump, was stored in about 4-ton lots out of doors in open bins. Subbituminous coal, which is mined in Colorado, Wyoming, and other States, and is known also as "black lignite," is commonly supposed to deteriorate rapidly in storage, especially by "slacking" or crumbling of the lumps. The tests herein described were undertaken at Sheridan, Wyo., in cooperation with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Co., in order to determine the extent of this slacking and the accompanying loss of heat value. The tests were in open bins holding 4 to 12 tons.

"IntroductionA process for production of magnesium by carbothermal reduction was developed at Padentheirm, Austria, by the Austro Americanische Magnesit Corporation& an independent investigation of this and other processes was started in 1937 by the Bureau of Mines at Pullman, Wash., with the cooperation of Washington State College. 10/ A preliminary study of the Radentheirm pro¬cess, as revealed by the meager information then available, demonstrated the following two major disadvantages,The use of hydrogen for shock cooling requires an enormous volume of gas - about 1,000 cubic feet for condensing each pound of metal as a pyrophoric dust which must be completely separated from this gas. Then if the gas is to be recycled for repeated use, the CO produced by the reduction reaction must be separated from the hydrogen. These separations are costly from the standpoint of equipment and operation. 11/The condensate is an impure, pyrophoric metal powder that must be purified and converted to coherent form. This is accomplished by distillation or sublimation of the metal. Distillation on a large scale involves difficulties inherent in the high boiling point (1,107° C.) and the chemical activity of the metal. To avoid these difficulties, the metal is sublimed at 600° C. and of very low pressure. This is quite easily carried out as a batch operation but is a costly procedure. A continuous sublimation process has not been accompli shed."

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to recover strategic and critical metals such as Ni, Co, and Cr from mixed contaminated super-alloy scrap. One approach being studied involves melt refining of superalloy scrap to produce anodes for electrolytic deposition of Ni-Co alloy. This melt refining of superalloy turnings is described based on melt-oxidation and oxidation-carburization experiments, using roasted superalloy grinding sludge to supply the 0 needed to oxidize Cr and other readily oxidized elements to the slag. Controlled melt-carburization subsequent to oxidation improved the metal phase recovery of Ni and Co to well over 90 pct and decreased electrolytic solubility of Cr, Mo, and W by carbide formation. Electrolytic refining experiments were conducted using a controlled-potential mode (preset cathode potential). Data show effects of Fe and Cr impurities, cation concentration, electrolyte pH, S04-Cl electrolyte ratio, temperature, cathode potential, and cation-selective membrane use on current efficiency, current density, and deposit composition. Disposition of Ni, Co, Cr, MO, W, and Fe is compared for melt-oxidized versus oxidized-plus-carburized anodes. Deposits containing >97 pct Ni + Co (major impurity Fe) have been routinely obtained from scrap anodes. Research is continuing to improve deposit quality in sustained deposition and to recover Cr and other metals from refining slags and anode sludges.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a profitability analysis of producing crude oil by waterflooding. Included are the estimated costs of installation of water injection and producing equipment for waterfloods at 2,000 and 4,000 feet and the estimated annual operational expenses for each in west Texas. Using these cost estimates as a base for selecting a range of costs that are indicative of producing crude oil by waterflooding, a simulation technique was derived for determining the profitability under various conditions. Because of the large number of combinations of variables used in this study, a high-speed digital computer was utilized for the calculations. The variables include operational expenses, capitalized costs, price of the oil, annual production, and leasehold acquisition cost. The results obtained from the simulations are presented Fn the appendix. In addition, a nomographical approach was chosen for presentation of the profitability. Five nomographs are presented that can be used for fast estimation of the discounted cash flow (DCF) rate of return that might be expected from a prospective or active operation under various sets of assumed conditions.

In a review of so 40 papers on damage to residential structures resulting from blasting, only 3 were found that present data on the observed amplitude and frequency of the vibration levels produced by blasting together with an observed degree of damage to a residential structure. The data from these three reports have been analyzed statistically to determine if one of the quantities, displacement, velocity, or acceleration, is more reliable than the others for estimating the degree of damage to a residential structure. From this analysis the conclusion is drawn that a given degree of damage to a structure is most closely related to the magnitude of the particle velocity of the wave motion passing thru the earth at the structure location. On the average, only minor damage it observed for peak particle velocities of 5.4 inches per second, and major damage is observed for peak particle velocities of 7.6 inches per second. When the spread of the data is taken into consideration, the following statement can be made: Wave motions that have a peak particle velocity in excess of 2 inches per second have a fair probability of producing some damage to structures, whereas wave motions that have a peak velocity less than 2 inches per second have a very low probability of causing any damage. Therefore, the recommendation is made that vibration levels in the vicinity of residential structures should be maintained below a peat particle velocity of 2 inches per second. The above criterion for safe blasting is considered to hold over a wide variety of soil and rock conditions because the original data were obtained for a wide range of soil and rock conditions and on various types of residential structures. This investigation was undertaken to develop methods to improve the quality of titanium sponge produced by the Bureau of Mines modification of the Kroll magnesium reduction process. Research revealed that by systematic elimination of detrimental impurities introduced with the raw materials and by improved handling and processing techniques, high-quality ductile titanium with a hardness of less than 110 B.h.n. (Brinell hardness number) can be produced consistently. This improvement was accomplished by helium (or argon) stripping of residual atmospheric and other dissolved gases from the titanic chloride, preliminary dehydration of crude titanium sponge, and careful regulation of the titanium tetrachloride (TiC14) feed rate to the reactors.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United states Bureau of Mines describing mining and milling methods and costs at industrial mineral plants throughout the United states. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods and equipment used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might, in many instances, cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention' of the reader? is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. P. J. Weisel, Inc., with office at La Habra and plant at Corona, Calif., is the only local company that produces sand for the Los Angeles glass factories, although silica sand for other purposes is produced in other parts of southern California and the adjacent portions of Nevada. The deposit at Corona consists of coarse sand imbedded in a whitish clay and differs greatly from the other deposits, which are fine-grained sandstone that must be crushed before it can be screened and washed. The preparation of Corona sand has to be thorough and includes grinding in tube mills, repeated washing and rinsing, removal of dust by air separation, and magnetic separation of iron and other minerals. This requires a plant with a complicated flow sheet. The first plant built did not make a. satisfactory glass sand, and many additions and changes were necessary. It is thought that the present flow sheet will remain substantially unchanged until a new plant is built. The design of a new plant would be simpler, but the process would be the same.

Before listing the laboratories and the work performed there, it is proper to make clear what is done and what is not done by Federal bureaus, States, and Territories, as well as by Canada and Mexico. FEDERAL Bureau of Mines. - The Bureau of Mines does not make assays, analyses, or tests for individuals or firms unless they be incidental to investiga¬tions that are of possible benefit to the entire mineral industry. All significant results obtained in this way are made public through published reports. Any mineral sample sent to this Bureau for simple identification will be subjected to a cursory examination.

This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimina- tion of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To deter- mine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with refer- ence to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope. Although the hypothesis as to coking quality finds but partial support in the chemical analyses, its consideration has led to a method of predicting from an analysis with a fair degree of certainty whether any given coal will coke by the ordinary process. The unbroken transition between coals originally similar but now classed in widely different groups, whether of the same age or of different ages, as a result of dynamochemical action, appears demonstrated by the analyses as well as by field observation. The majority of fatalities that occur in road construction work zones in the United States involve a worker being struck by a piece of construction equipment or other vehicle. The Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with the Washington State Department of Transportation, is evaluating methods to decrease these accidents. One such method uses devices that assist equipment operators in monitoring blind areas around the equipment to prevent collisions with workers on foot or other objects. Several cameras and sensor systems are available for this application, and a study was conducted to evaluate these systems on various trucks used in road construction and maintenance. Tests were conducted using sanding trucks during the winter months, which allowed researchers to investigate the effectiveness and limitations of various technologies under the most extreme conditions. Tests were also conducted using dump trucks during the warmer months to study the effectiveness of the systems in highway work zones. Results show that many difficulties arise when using camera and sensor systems in cold, snowy climates. And, while the operation of these systems is more reliable during the warmer months, challenges still exist in using them on equipment in crowded work areas.

An expert system advisor consultant to assist a coal mine section foreman is described in this report. The system is designed for an underground continuous miner section that is being specifically used for longwall development. The system provides three methods of operation that include normal operational mode for use underground, a training mode for use in training section foremen under controlled classroom conditions, and a demonstration mode that is free running. The Face Decision Support System or FDSS, is designed to interface with section environmental monitoring equipment and section production monitoring equipment that may appear in the future. This provides automated reprioritzation of the section foreman's job list from the system. The system 1S written in LASER which is written in C and is operated under the UNIX operating system. The objective of the entire FOSS system is to ensure that no job or piece of information important to safety or to production is forgotten because of the immediate problems confronting the section foreman.

The Bureau of Mines, through a 4-year program of combined in-house and contract research, has developed the necessary hardware and software technology to provide rugged, reliable automatic fire protection for surface mining mobile equipment. One element of this program was a continuing effort to help foster rapid mining industry acceptance of the technology by keeping end user costs reasonable. This report is an analysis of the economic impact of surface mining mobile equipment fires and the cost benefit of utilizing automatic fire protection systems to abate these losses.

The Bureau of Mines in its safety work has for a number of years advocated and recommended the use of permissible portable electric cap lamps for use in all mines. In the course of time required for the evolution from an unsatisfactory to an efficient and safe light, but encouraging increase in their use has been experienced in Alabama. As early as 1916, small installations of these safer lamps were made or an experimental basis by several operating companies, and the first complete mine installation eras made at the Virginia mine of the Gulf States Steel Co., July 1, 1918. From the experiments in 1316 and the complete equipment of the first mine in 1918 gradual progress has been made until there are now 30 installations with 10 operating companies; as a result 20 mines have been put entirely and 5 partly on, closed lights, and 3 companies equip their engineering departments; two installations of closed lights are maintained by other companies for emergency use. One of the mines partly on the electric cap lamp is an ore mine - the only one in Alabama (and one of the very few in the United States) that uses closed lights. Electrowinning metals from solutions leached from low-grade ores is becoming an increasingly important extraction method as the metal industry turns to pollution-free recovery processes. Lead-alloy anodes are used industrially in the electrolytic recovery of zinc and copper. However, associated with the use of these anodes are the inherent problems of stability and lead contamination of the cathode. In an effort to eliminate these problems, the Bureau of Mines has developed a relatively inexpensive lead dioxide anode for electrowinning metals from strong acid solutions. The anode was prepared by depositing Pb02 directly on a titanium blank in a strong HN03-Pb(N03)2 solution at 2.15 to 6.45 A/dm2 and 60° C. This anode was tested in zinc and copper electrowinning cells containing 200 gpl H2S04 and 35 to 100 gpl metal ions at the current density of 3.23 to 6.45 A/dm2. Contamination of the cathode by lead was =0.005 pet. A 30-day test at 6.45 to 12.90 A/dm2 in an electrolyte containing 200 gpl H2S04 and no metal ions resulted in a slight change in surface morphology of the Pb02 anode but no measurable change in anode weight or dimensions.
