Approximately 270,000 cu yd (20[0],000 cu m) of inferred subeconomic auriferous gravel resources were estimated in three Tertiary deposits in the Polk Springs study area (fig. 1 and table 1). These resources are exposed between tuff-breccia and lava flows of the Pliocene Tuscan Formation and Paleozoic or Mesozoic metamorphic rocks which suggests that although no deposits were identified in the other RARE II areas, they may be concealed beneath the Tuscan Formation. Difficulty in choosing drilling targets will make the likelihood of resource discoveries small. The development and production of these deposits would also be prohibitive under current economic conditions due to the thick covering of volcanic rocks. Recent stream gravels of Deer Creek in the Polk Springs study area contain enough gold to attract gold hobbyists; however, the stream gravels do not have sufficient volume to be considered a resource. Potential exists for additional auriferous gravels near the Occidental Mine in the Polk Springs RARE II area.

Among the more important raw materials now utilized for the commercial production of synthetic organic chemicals is natural 'gas. Natural gas has been used as a fuel and source of energy almost from its discovery, but its potentialities as a chemical raw material were not realized until recently. Research in the use of natural gas for Chemical synthesis received great impetus from the discovery by Brooks and Humphrey4/ in 1918 of alcohols in the diluted ?acid oil? obtained by sulfuric acid treatment of cracked petroleum distillates. Experimental data soon showed that hydrocarbons from natural gas could be converted to these same products. Laboratory methods for chlorination of natural-gas hydrocarbons, particularly of methane for the production of methyl chloride, methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride, and chleroform were known before that time but were not developed commercially. Methods for obtaining alcohol by oxidation of hydrocarbons derived from natural gas also were known before 1918 but had not received commercial consideration. Since 1918, and particularly during the past 15 years, the work of chemists and chemical manufacturers throughout the world has resulted in an accumulation of data regarding the reactivity of natural-gas hydrocarbons, and related hydrocarbons found in refinery gases or made synthetically. These data have been used to develop methods for converting hydrocarbons into chemical products and thus form the basis for a large and growing industry.

This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards. First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change In coal seam inclination. Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in. diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, production to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved. The room temperature tensile properties of commercially pure titanium and seven titanium alloys prepared by skull casting were determined in the as-cast and heat-treated conditions. Data were compared with property data from tensile tests on wrought alloys of the same compositions in the as-worked and heat-treated conditions. The alloys evaluated were Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6Al-4V-lSi, Ti-6A1-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo, Ti-6A1-6V-4Zr-4Mo, Ti-6A1-6V-2Sn, and Ti-11.5Mo-6Zr-4.5Sn. Test specimens were prepared from both static and centrifugal castings and from plate fabricated by forging and rolling vacuum-melted ingots. The data indicate that the alpha and alpha-beta alloys have strength properties in the as-cast condition that are reasonably close to the strength properties of their wrought counterparts in the as-worked condition. An exception to this was the Ti-6A1-6V-4Zr-4Mo alloy for which insufficient data were available to form any firm conclusions. Fine-grained cast structures of Beta III (Ti-11.5Mo-6Zr-4.5Sn) were shown to be generally stronger in the as-cast condition than the wrought alloy in the as-worked condition except for the yield strength of one structure that was unusually low. Heat treatment of this alloy produced properties that were unpredictable. Indications are, however, that optimization of heat treatment parameters for each cast structure could produce strength properties equal to that of wrought materials.

Underground mining, like many high-risk industries, is facing a crisis in the near future. This industry has traditionally relied on a master-apprentice relationship to train new workers, but experienced miners are retiring in large numbers, leaving few "masters" to properly train their replacements. With a recent resurgence in mining, many new miners are entering the workforce each day. The rise in the number of inexperienced workers has implications for worker safety in an industry in which one mistake can blow up the entire workplace. The explosion in the Darby Mine in May 2006 that killed five miners illustrates what can happen in hazardous environments such as underground mines. The Health Communications Team at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Spokane Research Laboratory was asked to address this problem by developing new training and safety awareness materials to promote safe flame cutting and welding practices. This article describes how occupational ethnographic techniques provided insights needed for "new product development." The result of this work was a national initiative to raise awareness and to protect underground coal miners from the dangers of flame cutting and welding in an environment filled with solid fuel and methane (natural gas). Although this project was initially designed for the mining industry, the approach and lessons learned are applicable to any high-risk industry and should be of interest to other social marketing or occupational safety and health professionals.

Glass wool meeting requirements for commercial use was made from glassy fractions of urban solid wastes by the Bureau of Mines. This research was a part of the Bureau's program to develop building products and other usable materials from reclaimed urban waste materials. Mixes of molten glass were fiberized into glass wool during laboratory studies by impingement of a jet of compressed air on a stream of the molten glass. The principal test variable studied was composition of the melt; this was varied by adding dolomite and alumina to obtain molten glass with the handling characteristics required for producing final wool products of the desired composition and physical characteristics. When no charge is made for the waste glass and approximately $75 per ton can be obtained for the wool product, an interest rate of return on investment after taxes of about 12 percent can be obtained. If a charge of $5 per ton is required for the waste glass, a selling price of about $78 per ton would be necessary to obtain a l2-percent-interest rate of return on investment after taxes.

As part of the Federal Bureau of Mines titanium resources examination program, samples from seven deposits in the Pacific Northwest were tested for amenability to various beneficiation techniques. The samples obtained by the Bureau's Office of Mineral Resources at Spokane, Washington represent a large potential source of titanium. This report summarizes the results of tests at the Bureau's Metallurgy Research Center, Albany, Oregon. Recoveries from tabling placer samples were about 50 percent at grades of 30 percent titanium dioxide. Chalcocite flotation concentrates (26-34 percent Cu and 6-7 percent S) were roasted in air to determine sulfur elimination as a function of temperature, airflow rate, and residence time. Fluosolids roasting was evaluated batchwise and continuously in a 4-inch fluid-bed reactor. Kiln roasting tests were carried out in a 4-inch ID by 6-inch-long rotary drum. Pelletizing the very fine concentrates prior to roasting was essential to minimize dust losses and accretions. Concentrate pellets, sized minus 10 plus 20 mesh and bonded with 2 percent bentonite, were excellent feed for fluosol¬ids roasting and limited dust losses to 10 percent or less. One-fourth-inch pellets were best suited to kiln roasting. Both techniques were capable of producing copper calcines analyzing well under 1 percent residual sulfur when operated at 900° C with average retention times of 3 to 4 hours. Calcined pellets were strong, porous, and readily reducible.

This annual report deals with four distinct tasks related to research on the safety and reliability of mine electrical power systems. Task one is to develop tests and the associated instrumentation to detect incipient faults on a mine or any low-voltage power system. Task two is a dual effort related to the digital prediction of electrical transients on mine power systems and laboratory testing of transient suppression devices. Task three is also a dual effort. This task consists of both theoretical and laboratory work to assess both the reliability and the fail-safe characteristics of several items of protective equipment used in mine power systems. Task four consists of an effort to use programmable calculators and/or computer terminals to check overcurrent protective device coordination.

This report is the first in a "final" series of publications on the Juneau Mining District (JMD). This volume summarizes the results of Bureau of Mines (Bureau) investigations in the JMD during the period 1984-1988. Volume 2 consists of a detailed description of Bureau investigations of mineral de-posits, prospects, and occurrences. Volume 3 is a report on industrial minerals within the district. This study has identified and examined more than 300 mines, prospects, and occurrences containing gold, silver, copper, zinc, lead, nickel, cobalt, tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, and PGM. More than 20 of these were discovered during this study. An additional 20 prospects not mentioned in the literature were rediscovered during the JMD study.

The monthly summary of the climatological record for the demonstration mine is presented in Table 1. Tear normal temperatures occurred throughout the growing season. From May to October precipitation was more than normal except in June when it was 2.55 inches below normal. Corn and soybean plantings were delayed until June 2-7 because of wet field conditions. This is about one month later than normal for corn planting. Insect infestations were much less than those encountered in previous years. Cutworm activity was not noticed and alfalfa weevil infestation were small and patchy. Stalk rot in corn was a significant problem at harvest and resulted in much Milk lodging. The wet and generally overcast conditions of July, August and September were bend 10 beneficial al to certain plant disease organisms. For example, pumpkins planted in a small garden area at the demonstration mine did not ripen because of a powdery mildew resulting from overcast, wet conditions. Field operations and row crop plantings were greatly delayed by wet field conditions. It was difficult to plant by conventional tillage because the soil remained soft and sticky where the moldboard plow had been used. The history of the drilling of Pilot Hole "XI' is presented. This historical summary provides the details of method used during the drilling of this hole. Problems encountered during drilling are discussed. The quantities of drilling mud and other materials used to drill the hole are documented.

The use of Diesel fuel as a source of power is continuing to increase in the United States. The latest available figures indicate that refineries are delivering in excess of 10,000,000 barrels of this type of fuel per month. Factors contributing to this increased consumption are conversions by a number of railroads from steam to Diesel locomotives and the growing use of Diesel engines in buses, trucks, tractors, earth-moving machinery, water craft, and stationary power plants. The increasing importance of Diesel fuel has led to a need for more information on its characteristics, particularly on the grades and qualities currently being marketed. To supply this information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under a cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of Diesel fuels produced in refineries in this country. Samples of Diesel fuel were analyzed by the manufacturers in accordance with instructions from the Motor-Fuels Survey Panel of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines where the data were studied am compiled as shown in the tables of this report. The first survey was made in 1950 and was published as a Bureau of Mines report. The present report shows the results of a similar survey made during 1951.

Before the various States began to enact workman's compensation laws accidents were considered inherent in many industries, and little or no effort was made to prevent or reduce them. The hazard was accepted by the employee with the job, and the avoidance of accidents by mental alertness or physical agility was largely his responsibility. After the employee had given evidence of enough skill inn performing his allotted task efficiently the responsibility of the employer apparently ceased with respect to the personal safety of the employee. However, following the enactment of workmen's compensation laws, at least two facts that had not before been fully appreciated soon became apparent: (1) The majority of accidents can be prevented if the management firmly determines to prevent them; (2) frog a monetary point of view alone accidents are decidedly expensive, both to employer and to employee. It is now evident that savings effected by conscientious safety effort add substantially to net profits of operation.

Collins Radio Company, through this contract with the Bureau of Mines, has conducted a System Study of Coal Mine Communi¬cations. The program was a three phase program to establish a data base, perform communication system analysis and optimi¬zation, and prepare equipment specifications to be included in this final report. At the start of establishing a data base both a knowledge of mine communication and coal mines in general was obtained. Communication system requirements and constraints were determined along with a survey of current and potential mine communication equipment. An investigation was completed concerning theoretical LF and VLF propagation characteristics, and UHF propagation tests were conducted in a working coal mine. Different mines were contacted and on-site surveys completed with respect to coal mine communication requirements.

Two Federal Bureau of Mines recycle hydrogenation experiments to prepare catalytic cracking feed stock were made at 3,000 pounds pressure with crude shale oil retorted from Green River (Colo.) shale in the gas-combustion retort. The hydrogenated product from the first experiment, made at 784° F., was used for investigating the effects of nitrogen content on catalytic cracking yields and for determining the quality of the catalytically cracked gasoline. Hydrogenated product containing 0.14 percent or more of nitrogen produced less gasoline when cracked in a CAT "A" unit than was obtained from East Texas light gas oil cracked at the same conditions; product containing 0.10 percent or less nitrogen produced a quantity of cracked gasoline equal to that obtained from the East Texas light gas oil. The catalytically cracked gasoline had research octane numbers calculated to be approximately 95 clear and 103 with 3 ml. of tetraethyl lead. The principal product from the second experiment, made at 828° F., was a low nitrogen content gas oil which was used for investigating the yields of cracked products obtained when it was catalytically cracked to different degrees of conversion. Yields of cracked products, when plotted as functions of conversion, were essentially the same, within the experimental range of the data, as published yields from catalytic cracking of East Texas heavy gas oil; however, yields from cracking the shale-oil product did not display the sensitivity to change of cracking temperature that has been found for East Texas gas oil.

An inventory was made by the Bureau of Mines of wastes of mineral origin, water requirements, treatment of wastes, and water treatment practice of 163 industrial installations in the Lower Missouri River Basin. This is the second and concluding report on the survey, conducted in cooperation with the Missouri Basin Field Committee of the Department of the Interior as part of the Missouri Basin project. Principal industries covered by this second report are: Sand and gravel, coal, meat, ice, brewing, paint, petroleum, chemical, fabricated metals, and a number of industries having either no waterborne wastes, or none of mineral origin. Gravel, sand, and silt from 47 producers are the major wastes, totaling 6 million tons annually, Coal mine wastes in the form of slurried solids from washing crude coal are second in volume, totaling 100,000 tons per year. They contain an average of about 40 percent coal. Salt is the third largest waste, amounting to 28,000 tons per year, Next is calcium carbonate, most of which is formed in water treatments, Because of its high unit value, chromic acid is important, although the waste quantity is much smaller; cyanide wastes are also significant because large quantities of sodium hydroxide and chlorine are consumed in their treatments prior to disposal. The various industries discharging wastes use 38 billion gallons of water annually; the recirculation rate is 109 billion gallons per year. The plants discharging no waterborne mineral wastes use 2 billion gallons of water per year and recirculate more than 1 billion gallons. Sand and gravel plants use 13.5 billion gallons; petroleum refineries use 10 billion gallons in direct use and recirculate 82 billion gallons per year.

This publication summarizes, for potential contractors and all other interested parties, the research and development of in-house and contract projects programmed by the Bureau of Mines for fiscal year 1983 (October 1, 1982-September 30, 1983) under its Health and Safety Technology program. The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advance toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the systems technology required to create a more healthful and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workers.

This report describes Bureau of Mines experiments in gasifying coal in a helium-heated tube-coil reactor. The purpose of this work was to investigate helium as a medium for transferring heat from a nuclear reactor to gasify coal or for use as high-temperature process heat. A laboratory-scale system was designed and constructed to demonstrate feasibility. In preliminary tests with this system, in which the coal was fed as a water slurry, the helium-heating and recycling equipment operated well. Considerable difficulty was experienced, however, in preheating coal slurry to the desired range of 400° - 1,000° F. without plugging the preheaters. Five different preheaters plugged with coke or with salts leached from the coal. The longest operating period wan 12 hours. These difficulties were partly due to the relatively small equipment and flow rates. The gasifier processed l pound per hour of low-rank coal at 300 p.s.i.g. and 1,800° F., with the carbon conversion limited to 20 to 30 percent by the short residence time and slow heat-transfer rate.
