About two-thirds of the manufactured gas supplied to the public by the gas plants in the Illinois district is cnrbureted water gas. The leading generator fuel is coke, ma.de in by-product c.oke ovens or in retorts, chiefly from eastern gas coals. During the fall and winter of 1917-18, when the demand for coke by war industries and the restrictions of the Fuel Administration in connection with the transportation of coke from eastern States made it almost impossible for many gas companies to obtain their coke requireml'nts, several water-gas plants had to use bituminous coal as generator fud. Many operating difficulties were encountered, some of which were solved more or less satisfactorily in different plants. A number of plants attacked the problem rather blindly because facilities for making tests were lacking and because technical men were too busy with labor and supply problems to study thoroughly the conditions involved or to ascertain what other plants had done with this fuel. It was therefore with the hope of assisting the gas industry during this critical period, and of promoting the use of Central District coals for gas making, that the Illinois Mining Investigations, a joint agency of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Geological Survey Division undertook the, tests discussed in this paper. • This report was compiled under the auspices of a technical committee appointed by Gov. Frank 0. Lowden to promote the use of Central District coals in gas manufacture as a war measure. This committee included the following representatives of the various agencies concerned: U. S. In late July 1985, air samples from a sealed portion of the Quinland coal mine in West Virginia showed the presence of carbon monoxide (CO). Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel concluded that a fire was burning behind the seals. Since an imminent danger existed, the mine operator was given a closure order. The gases behind the seals were monitored and almost 2 million ff of carbon dioxide (C02) gas was pumped into the sealed area to stabilize the environment. Sixteen days after the closure order was issued, MSHA allowed the mine to return to production. Approximately 1 yr later, mine management submitted a seal breaching request to MSHA in order to drive a set of entries to further develop the mine. The Bureau of Mines established a sampling strategy and monitored gases from behind the sealed area during the breaching operation until the atmosphere was safe. This report is an account of the seal breaching conducted by the mine, MSHA, and the Bureau. The logistics of this event, the sampling strategy, and the equations applied could be used by the mining industry in future breachings or mine recovery operations. Time to reenter the area was calculated by using the methane (CH4) concentrations sampled at the discharge of the seals. Tracer gas was used to verify the ventilation flows through the area.

The principal purpose of this study was the development of an engineering and economic model of a hypothetical large-scale open pit gold mining operation. The guiding concept in developing the model was the idea that, through study of a number of such models, it would be possible to evaluate a mineral property and to make reasonable estimates of the benefits to be derived from research in mining and metallurgy. The model by use of a computer is able to produce results easily and quickly when cost factors are varied. Cost factors may be varied as a result of assumptions of improved technology or of assumptions of assuming different approaches or methods to accomplish a particular segment of the mining or processing operation. The discounted cash flow rate of return was used to measure the effect of changes in costs or expected revenue. In this study, assumptions based on past processing practices were made in an effort to reduce costs of processing the ore These assumptions were: (1) Eliminating the low-grade cyanide circuit; (2) reducing the quantity of material to be processed by screening after crushing; and (3) using a combination of assumptions (1) and (2). All three assumptions resulted in reduced capital investment and operating cost that caused substantial increases in the rate of return.

The effects of adding varying amounts of type I portland cement to hydraulic backfill are described. Six different fill materials, each with three cement contents, were tested to determine which fill properties have the most significant effect on cemented strength. Two strength prediction equations, based on the physical and mineralogical properties of the fills, were formulated, and these accounted for 96 and 99 percent of the variability of the data. Results of both unconfined compression and triaxial tests of cemented fills are given, and the effects of moist curing and fill densification on the 7-day strength are discussed. Permeability test data are given, and the decreased permeability due to cement content and curing time is shown graphically. A discussion of the limited evaluation of other potential stabilization additives (expansive cement, fly ash, sodium silicate, gypsum, and asphalt) is included in an appendix.

This information circular, which describes the methods and costs of sinking a small underground shaft with steel supports at the Keystone mine of American Smelting and Refining Co., near Crested Butte, Colo., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on current shaft-sinking practices in various mining districts of the United States. Preparations for sinking a combined exploration, development, and production shaft from the lowest level of the Keystone mine began early in 1957. This vertical, three-compartment, 6-1/4-by 16-foot rectangular shaft was to be sunk in separate stages or lifts so as to correspond with the progress of an associated lateral exploration and development program. The first section of the shaft was collared and sunk to a depth of 209 feet between September 1957 and April 1958. Because of the depressed base-metal market, the mine was shut down as soon as the initial phase of the exploration and development program had been completed and before any deeper sinking could be attempted.

Fifty years ago, the belief that "fillers" were added to paints for the sole purpose of diluting and cheapening the pigment may have been justified; but paint technology has made tremendous progress since that time, and today both the manufacturer and the consumer know that the judicious use of fillers may add desirable properties to a paint that cannot be introduced in any other way. A growing respect for these accessory materials has led to the use of the more euphemistic term "extender." The names "extender" and "filler" are to a considerable degree synonymous. The newer term, "extender," is adopted in this paper, though it is actually no more descriptive than the older name. Stewart's3/ definition of extender is: "A cheap pigment, usually of an inert type, used to extend or increase the bulk of a paint, thus reducing its unit cost. Extenders are also used to adjust the consistency of a paint and to let down colored pigments of great tinting strength. The use of an extender in a paint does not necessarily mean the resultant product will be inferior. In fact, extenders sometimes, improve -certain characteristics of a film." All extenders are not cheap, as, for example, wet-ground mica and diatomite. Research in the, use of extenders (also sometimes called "inerts") has been one of the host active branches of study in the paint field; and many thousands of dollars have been spent in establishing the physical and chemical characteristics required of various natural mineral extenders for numerous paint formulas

The Bureau of Mines is conducting a study of methods to improve the efficiency of the process used to pickle stainless steels. A review of the literature on pickling of stainless steels showed that the chemistry of several process operations involved in the pickling of stainless steels is not fully understood, and that further research could improve the pickling efficiency. The benefits of this research would be a reduction in the annual loss of several thousands of tons of critical minerals such as nickel and chromium, and a reduction in the amount of solids and spent acid solution that are currently discarded. The conclusion from this review is that further research is needed in four operations that either directly or indirectly influence the pickling process: hot working, annealing, conditioning, and the actual operation of pickling, Laboratory studies of the pickling operation are presently in progress.

The King Mountain study area is centered about 120 air km northwest of Blackfoot, and 30 air km north of Arco, Idaho. The study area makes up the southern one-third of the northwest-trending Lost River Range--the highest mountain range in Idaho. The area is predominantly underlain by Paleozoic-age marine limestone and lesser dolostone, with a relatively small inlier of silica-rich, Ordovician-age quartzite. There are vast, unquantified resources of these industrial minerals present; however, special markets need to be developed for these resources which are near enough for transportation costs to be competitive. Five prospects were found in the study area; however, only one, the Elbow quartz silica prospect, contains resources and current claims. There has been no mineral production in the study area.

One of the best present-day yardsticks of the material welfare of a nation is its consumption of minerals, The United States, with only 7 percent of the world population, consumes 45 percent of the world wealth, pays the highest real wages, has the shortest working hours, and numbers the largest percentages of home owners among its population, and at the same time its per-capita consumption of minerals is far greater than that of any other nation. In 1937, British India, with roughly twice the population of the United States, used less than 2 percent as much lead, 4 percent as muck zinc, and 13 percent as much copper; even in Europe, which has three times our population and where war preparations have greatly expanded the normal needs of peaceful industries, the aggregate consumption of metals and industrial minerals other than lignite is less than the total for the United States alone. The march of civilization passed from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age before the dawn of history. It may be questioned whether man or monkey first threw stones at an enemy, but only man could have fashioned rough stones into weapons. Eoliths rudely shaped by apelike men are believed by archaeologists to have antedated by hundreds of thousands of years the existence of our own human ancestors. The primitive people that followed the retreating Ice Cap northward in early quaternary period - at least a million years ago - were fairly adept in the shaping of flints and even used a little copper. The Bronze Age, so-called, superseded the Stone Age when, around 8,000 B. C., the news spread that chunk s of natural copper could be pounded into better weapons or cutting implements than ever could be made by chipping stones. The Bronze Age gave place to the Iron Age about 1,000 B, C., and though students of modern history may speak of the Coal Age, the Petroleum Age, and the Automobile Age, and so on, these ages have all been crowded into a brief century and a half. The truth is that we still are in the Iron Age, unless perhaps we choose to call it the Age of Many Metals.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study on the cost of mine permitting and compliance with environmental regulations in Alaska. It discusses permitting requirements and procedures for placer and lode mines. Placer miners must comply with recently established (1988) water quality regulations and effluent treatment requirements. To estimate the impact differing treatment options (no recycle, 100% recycling, and flocculation) have on a placer mine's rate of return, three models (1,500, 1,000, and 500 yd3/d) were simulated. Rates of return for these models show a marked decrease as effluent treatment is increased. The incremental increase in operating cost from one treatment option to the next is relatively small; however the opportunity cost of lost production if' significant and accounts for the decreasing rate of return with increased effluent treatment. Lode mines face greater costs for permitting and compliance than similarly sized placer mines as a result of the impact of the operation. Direct permitting costs for lode mines range from 2 to 6% of total project cost, with 4% the most common figure cited by industry. Total costs for permitting and compliance are approximately double those for permitting. Indirect costs associated with compliance include mitigation, monitoring, and reclamation.

The Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of :,!in-s, in cooperation with the College of Mines, University of Washington, has completed a detailed investigation-of the physical and chemical properties of western cokes made or used in the Pacific Northwest, as evaluated by standard methods./ One of the properties determined, to which more or less importance has been attached, was reactivity5/ or combustibility. As no standardized procedure is available, it was necessary to develop a workable method for evaluating this property. The combustibility of coke is usually measured by the formation of carbon dioxide with time at a particular temperature or by the reduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide. Analysis of the resulting gases commonly is required to evaluate the result. The method described in this paper is simple and direct in that the sample of coke or other carbonaceous material is weighed as it burns; the loss in weight and time is indicated by a balance and clock arrangement. Gas analyses are not required. Methods similar in principle have been used by Tu, Davis, and Hottel6/ and by Oshima and Fukuda7/ for determining the combustion rate of carbon and for studying the effect of ash on combustion characteristics. This investigation was divided into two major phases. Phase I of the study was an examination of the occurrence and production of acid water within the Bunker Hill Mine in northern Idaho. The second phase of the project involved the study of water movement through an abandoned tailings pile. Mineralogy and hydrogeology were determined to be the two most important factors in the acid mine drainage problem. Low pH water was formed in the mine in areas of lead-zinc ore rich in pyrite. Water movement in the mine was important in the production of acid and the transportation of heavy metals. Areas of recharge to the mine were identified. A data collection network was installed to monitor water quality and quantity changes. The quantity of acid drainage from the mine was found to vary directly with surface runoff events. The study of the abandoned tailings pile was performed to determine the characteristics of water movement through the tailings material and the resultant impact on the hydrologic environment. The Page Tailings Pile, abandoned in 1969, was utilized as a study area. An extensive network of piezometers and meteorological data collection sites were installed in and near the pile. Data collected to date indicate the presence of a ground-water mound under the east half of the pile. Some transfer of ions from the tailings pile to the ground-water system has been detected.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. Ropes of sizes ranging from 3/4 to 2 in. in diameter and from 2 to 35 ft in length were tested to determine their breaking strength, elongation, and torque. This was done to characterize the test equipment on ropes used in mine hoisting systems.

The use of safe equipment, safeguards, and safe practices in the mining and allied industries should reduce injuries and improve accident experience. The object of this report is to give to the mining industry, especially metal mining, a graphic pictorial description of some of the safeguards, equipment, and practices used and followed in the iron-ore mines of the Lake Superior district. Some of the subject material has been in use or has been established for many years, and some is relatively new. Some of the equipment was purchased commercially, and some was designed by the company employees and constructed in the mine shops. The photographs were taken by the personnel of the Health and Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines, primarily for use in the Metal-Mine Accident-Prevention Course of the Bureau of Mines. In general, they are arranged under the following headings or subjects: 1. Accident statistics. 2. Support of ground. 3. Hoisting and haulage. 4. Explosives. 5. Fires, gases, and ventilation.

This volume is the second of three volumes comprising the final report of the research project "Biomechanics of Low Coal." It covers only the anthropometric study of low coal miners. Volume I summarizes the overall biomechanical, anthropometry, and work physiology study conducted. Development of work clothes modified to meet the needs of low coal miners is described in Volume III. The male and female anthropometry, with the exception of weight and circumferential dimensions, was quite similar to the comparison populations. The miners tended to be heavier and have greater circumferences. The measurements made in this study were used to develop 5th, 50th and 95th percentile, quarter and half scale, male and female mannequins. These twelve mannequins can be used in work place and equipment design and redesign.

The objective of this study was to determine the magnitude and sources of environmental noise from mining operations near populated areas, to de-scribe monitoring techniques, and to identify applicable existing noise abatement techniques. To this end, noise surveys of a representative sample of mines and quarries were conducted. Noise levels at site boundaries and near specific equipment and ensembles of equipment were measured. Noise exposures in terms of annual day-night sound level were calculated for the boundary noise measurement locations. In addition, the relative sound level contributions were estimated for the mining equipment noise sources affecting the boundary locations. Noise abatement methods falling into three categories were analyzed: equipment practices, operational/administrative practices, and equipment quieting. Selected applications of noise abatement methods were evaluated in hypothetical situations with emphasis upon machinery selection and use. Procedures for measuring noise around mining operations were provided.

The research reported here concerns a four year study of the rock mechanics aspects of two underground hardrock mine study stopes. The first study was conducted at Anaconda Minerals Company's Carr Fork Mine near Tooele, Utah. The second study was conducted at the Homestake Mining Company's Homestake Mine In Lead, South Dakota. Both case studies were cooperative efforts of mining company personnel, the Spokane Research Center of the Bureau of Mines and the Department of Mining Engineering, University of Utah. Large diameter (6 1/2 In.) blastholes were an integral part of the stoplng method at each mine. A true vertical crater retreat (VCR) method was used at the Homestake Mine, while a vertical bench mining method (VBM) was used at the Carr Fork Mine. VCR and VBM methods were developed In the 1970's; they offer significant productivity gain and are now used throughout the world. The new technology, however, brings with It a requirement for more sophisticated engineering design and control. Since there are no personnel in a VCR or VBM stope, all ground control Including dimensioning of stopes and pillars and the layout of cable bolt assays or other artificial support must be done in advance of production blasting. Accordingly, the objective of the research study was the establishment of a procedure for optimizing stops and pillar sizes. The approach taken was In each case a combination of mine measurements of the study stope response to mining, laboratory testing for rock properties and In situ stress measurements of the premining stress field, and theoretical calculations of the study stope response to mining. All calculations were done with the UTAH-II finite element computer program. Simulation of the blasting sequence gave a correlation of 0.88 between measured and calculated extensometer readings (Incremental relative displacements) at the Carr Fork Mine where other 30 Instrumentation boreholes were used to monitor the test stope response. A correlation of 0.84 was obtained at the Homestake Mine where 19 instrumented boreholes were used for monitoring purposes. These high correlations validated the computer mode and calibrated It for rock mass properties. The calibrated model was then used In parametric studies of alternative design layouts.
