Prepare ATF Report of Theft or Loss (ATF Form 5400.5). A Report of Theft or Loss - Explosives Materials must be prepared when it is discovered that explosive materials are missing from inventory. Submit the original to the U.S. Bomb Data Center and keep a copy for your records. The form can be obtained from the ATF Distribution Center or from www.atf.gov. Although the U.S. Bomb Data Center should be notified as soon as possible, Federal law requires notification within 24 hours of the discovery. A full inventory check is also highly recommended (but not required) to locate missing explosives and to prevent future losses.

Wall control blasting is needed in most metal mining operations in terms of increasing mineral reserves and assuring the safety of the operation. This type of blasting has the goal to achieve a clean, stable rock wall in the shortest distance from a well fragmented, easy to excavate, blasted rock mass. This can be done with a variety of blasting techniques, all of which decrease the explosive energy towards the final wall. Each technique needs to suit the geology: modified production blasting, buffer blasting, pre-split and line drilling of empty holes. Pre-split is the most expensive technique, and allows final steeper bench face angles while modified production blasting is the least expensive but needs wider berms.

This new 3.3 million dollar outfall project is able to carry 330 million gallons of treated sewage water daily. Blasting in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground is an increasing common challenge for surface and underground mines. Many current PETN based non-electric and electronic detonators have manufacturer published in-hole temperature limits ranging from 55°C to 65°C (131°F to 150°F) and prescribed in-hole residence times on the order of days. When confronting blasthole temperatures above the manufacturer published limits, operations may request site-specific guidance and qualification for use. The advised safe loading window for in-hole PETN based detonators is often too short to be practicable for production blasting. To overcome limitations of PETN based initiation systems, surface mines with high temperature ground and/or reactive ground are known to load blastholes with a qualified high temperature bulk emulsion that are top primed with a cartridge of temperature qualified detonator sensitive emulsion plus an RDX detonating cord downline. As there is no in-hole delay detonator in this system, blasthole timing is accomplished with surface delays. Although this system is safe, top priming and surface delaying does influence floor quality and top size fragmentation, and safe loading windows times reduce blast block size and increase blasting frequency. The DynaEnergetics IGNEO high temperature electronic initiation system is rated for in-hole use in ground up to 150°C (302°F) for 48 hours. The detonator consists of a high strength detonator with an HMX base charge and thermally resistant downline. To make up a primer, the detonator is inserted into a booster charge assembly that is fitted with a small HMX shape charge. This high energy primer is designed to be compatible and reliable for firing bulk emulsions, including those with high percentages of urea inhibition to combat reactive ground. Up to 1000 detonators may be programmed in 1ms increments up to 1500ms. The system is controlled by a digital firing panel that can be used with either a wired or wireless trigger. The system enables high temperature and/or reactive ground sites to utilize in-hole delay initiation and realize the associated performance benefits. An underground mine in Western USA has several areas in their development heading with very high temperature, in view of this, they decided to use the IGNEO detonators in order to evaluate the effectiveness and performance of the system.

However, vibrations induced by blasting in open-pit mines could pose problems to the structures surrounding the mine site. Blast-induced ground vibration has been the subject of research for several studies in the past; because of the complex nature of blasting mechanism, it is difficult to predict blast-induced vibrations. This contribution addresses the advanced blasting technology which is based on wave propagation theory and fracture mechanics. The new concept of sonicity and the principle of maximizing sonicity in blasting as well as the energy or work of a blast operation will be introduced. It is shown that - in contrast to common belief – it is not the velocity of detonation which controls the blast but the relationship between velocity of detonation and the wave speeds, in other words, the Mach numbers of the blast operation. Based on numerous practical blasts in Germany, the authors show that, when using wave dynamic concepts, there is a linear relationship between peak particle velocity and the work of a blast operation and this linear relationship is controlled by the sonicity of the blast. Extensions to layered and faulted rock masses are presented. It will become clear that a second change of paradigm is enforced, the first one being the implementation of short time delaying. Again, the acquisition of knowledge in wave progation theory and fracture mechanics becomes mandatory in advanced blasting technology, where the art of blasting is now fully transformed into a science of blasting with little room for methods of trial and error.

To a meteorologist that just dealt with six thunderstorm delays at a major golf event over 4 days, well, lets just say the smirk on my face said it all. After giving my flight mate a detailed forecast and a short explanation on why I would know such information, I sensed, correctly, the inevitable follow up question was coming. “Why would you need a meteorologist at a golf tournament?”

In line with this new approach, the placing on the market and the supervision of explosives for civilian use are subject to essential safety requirements. The explosives market in Italy is regulated by the ”day consumption of explosives” that imposes the user to have on site just the strict quantities of explosives and accessories that are necessary for the daily drill and blast activities. Any eventually advanced explosives’ quantities should be destroyed, either returned to the provider’s magazine until the 24:00 hours of the same day.

This Limestone site required the removal of a bench containing high quality rock located in close proximity to sump and pit pump. The sump and associated electrical box were below the bench that needed to be blasted and located only 70 feet (21.33 meters) away. It was proposed to blast material needed without moving or disturbing the pump or electrical junction box. The area to be blasted was flown with a drone and stitched into a 3D orthographic model. Proprietary blast design software was used to create a blast design solution that would allow for a series of blasts that would provide required fragmentation and muckpile development and not disturb the sump or electrical box. A drill patten was created for each blast using the burden heat map and 3D face profiles created from the 3D orthographic model. Timing contour lines and muckpile displacement predictions were used to create timing sequences for proper face movement away from the sump and electrical box. The shot designs were laid out with a GPS system to insure hole location accuracy. All holes were remeasured for proper face burdens using the 3D model and Boretrak®® data collected after drilling operations were completed to insure hole locations were within face burden tolerances as derived by the burden heat map. After each drill log was reviewed, a charge loading scenario was created for each hole. The timing design created, for each shot and was reviewed and adjusted as needed with regard to desired muckpile displacement away from the sump and electrical box. Blasting results were satisfactory, with fragmentation and muckpile development consistent with the calculated throw from the blast model, with no rock hitting the pump or box and no rocks striking the sump water and disturbing the pump motor.
