In densely populated cities such as Hong Kong, where unoccupied space is becoming more valuable as the population grows, city planners are more often looking to underground space to meet the increasing need for transportation and services. Given the dense population of people, amenities and high-rise buildings above or near such underground space, it is essential to minimise any disturbance and potential damage during construction. Hence, the excavation of hard rock to develop such underground space can be highly restricted, expensive and time consuming. This is the case for many of the tunnels currently being excavated by drill and blast directly underneath Hong Kong’s busiest business districts and most popular residential areas.

Blast vibration monitoring for buried pipelines is typically conducted at the ground surface with a shallowly buried geophone. In many jurisdictions across the U.S., blast-related vibration limits set for pipelines are dictated by surface measurements and do not consider the significant reduction of PPV amplitudes acting on the pipe at depth. This study involved a vertical array of geophones deployed in drilled holes at two blasting sites of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway construction project in Phoenix, Arizona. Blast crews are exposed to a number of major hazards including explosives and chemicals, ground conditions, machinery, unique work environments and specific blasting hazards such as fly rock and misfires. Unfortunately, injuries caused by sudden and/or unexpected movement of ground are continuing to occur. Blast crews are not equipped with the knowledge or tools to understand whether a high wall that they are planning to work under is safe.

Blast-induced damage criterion based on the peak particle velocity has worked reasonably well for estimating building damage. However, the same criterion cannot be used to estimate damage to rock and mine structures such as shaft and tunnel walls. It does not take into account the nature of seismic radiation pattern in the near-field, which is very different than what is obtained at far-off distances. To investigate this phenomenon, a systematic study has been carried out involving single-hole blasts and normal production blasts, with explosive source ranging from nearly point source charges to standard borehole sizes (6-7 m long explosive column), with charge weight varying from 0.5 kg to 30 kg. In the near-field, it is shown that, both P-wave and S-wave take a dominant position compared to the mainly surface waves measured in the far-field. These are shown to depend strongly not only on the length of the explosive column but also the way it is initiated in the borehole (i.e. direct vs. reverse initiation in the borehole) with respect to the target location. The seismic radiation patterns were recorded by high-frequency triaxial accelerometer stations grouted in the rock mass. This study describes the nature of seismic radiation in the near-field from long and short charges, the role of initiation direction and their effect on frequency with respect to sensor locations or target area of interest, and their implication in prediction of blast-induced damage in the near field.

Any organization that subjects its activities to a continuous improvement methodology, aiming to optimize their processes and services, must be able to adequately measure the results of the implemented changes to pursue better outcomes. This is no different for mining companies. When it comes to blasting, an accurate fragmentation analysis can correlate blast design and rock mass parameters to particle size distribution, enabling us to further analyze the correspondence of specific design patterns, applied to specific rock mass properties and the result in measured fragmentation indicators. Over time, many tools were developed for us to obtain PSD data, albeit each of them had their own shortcomings. The first ones to be developed involved photographing the muck pile including a scale object, uploading those photos to a PC, and using specialized software to analyze each one. As a result, analysts would get a PSD curve that served as reference for the performance of the blast. This method, which is still used, has major shortcomings. The most obvious one is that it is only able to capture a slice of the blast, which corresponds to the exposed section of the muck pile the analyst has access to, and even there its reach is limited to the areas that are safe for getting close enough for placing the scale, which are not many. Consequently, this is a very limited way to get a fragmentation performance assess for a blast. Currently, autonomous systems are capable of taking continuous pictures of the muck pile. Installed on a shovel, conveyor belt or crusher feed, these systems can take a continuous stream of pictures that are later analyzed automatically without the need of human intervention. These systems greatly increase the volume of data and, consequently, we have a PSD curve that is more representative of the blast performance. However, this technology still had issues when trying to sample front end loaders mining operations or getting results from underground blasting due to the inherent difficulties of these operations. New algorithms used for capturing and processing data for front end loaders can overcome the harsh environment of their operations and produce PSD data in high vibration environments and difficult mining angles. For underground mining, algorithms can be used to sample each truck exiting the mine, giving a reliable source of fragmentation analysis that can be traced back to their stope of origin. The development of this technology extends the existing system’s capabilities and helps us in our efforts to improve fragmentation results with each blast.

"High-speed motion pictures are an invaluable resource for blasting analysis. Whether processed by the human eye or a computer, this imagery can provide important insight into a blast and its effects.While certainly popular, traditional high-speed film cameras hamper this process. Instant feedback is not available since film requires developing and, relevant in the case of automated analysis, film isnot immediately compatible with a computer. With these facts in mind, a new high-speed video camera system, the SVCSOO, has been developed. The SVC500 combines the capabilities of a high-speed film camera, the convenience of a solid-state digital video camcorder, and the computing power of a ‘486 PC to provide a complete, standalone platform for high-speed image acquisition and analysis. This paper will describe the design, features, and use of the SVCSOO andcompare these with the analogous aspects of film cameras."

Question: When it comes to demolition projects, what could be more demanding than asking a blaster to explosively demolish a stubby, heavily-reinforced concrete structure in the heart of a third-world country? Answer: Asking them to fell only half. Such was the charge recently put forth to Controlled Demolition Group (CDG), Yorkshire, UK when they were called to Casablanca, Morocco to provide a stunning demolition effect for the upcoming Universal Pictures film Spy Game, starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. Director Tony Scott (True Romance, Enemy of the State) contacted the renowned demolition firm after seeing their work on television and receiving recommendations from explosives manufacturers. The film’s producers then asked the CDG team if they could bring down half of an apartment block as part of a dramatic suicide bomber sequence.

A large overburden blast was carried out at Douglas Colliery, Middelburg Mine Services, close to a national road in South Africa. The road is a busy route between Witbank and Bethal and damage to the road could not be risked. The section of road next to the blast was particularly prone to damage, because it had been mined out on its eastern flank, and the large blast was to take place on its western flank. There were thus three potential damage risks: 1. Fly rock damage to the road surface 2. Vibration damage to the road substrate 3. Damage caused by bulk displacement of the block supporting the road into the void on the mined out side. This paper presents the design and blasting methods used to control the blast and avoid these three risks. Electronic delay detonators were used in multi-decked holes. Signature data were used to determine the blast timing to make sure that delays were used that would provide destructive interference. The timing direction and sequence was decided using wave interference patterns to direct repeated shocks away from the road. The precise detonators and the odelling capability allowed effective control of the blast vibration result. Each hole was charged with two explosive decks separated by a deck of aggregate to limit the charge mass fired per delay and thus limit the reaction forces acting towards the unsupported road. The vibration and blast results are presented in the paper, together with the design that was applied. Details are provided on how the blast was charged and primed. Mining operations present a very different environment to the suppliers of explosives, initiating systems and services, both on surface and underground. Typical hazards include underground movement, air quality, ground stability, moving equipment, and the use of explosives. As contractors to the mining industry we do not have management control over the environment in which our people operate. The hazards and consequent level of risk that our people are exposed to in some mining operations are significantly higher by orders of magnitude than in a normal factory environment. Orica Explosives (and other Explosives suppliers) are continually and increasingly identifying opportunities to partner with customers by adding value through the provision of services leading to a reduction in total mining costs. These services include the provision of a bulk underground loading services, delivery of product into underground magazines, magazine management, value added blasting, conversions, rock-on-ground contracts, and blast management programs.

Traditionally coal model digital terrain models (DTM) are created from lithological information obtained from broad scale exploration holes. The grid layout and distance between holes means that models do not commonly display local variations of seam dip, faulting and shearing. Due to this, issues can often arise when designing the loading of blast patterns based on potential variances between model and actual coal seam locations. Many sites will often attempt to create more accurate models through the collection of data from coal edge pickups on highwalls and in blast faces, along with information recorded by drillers (touch coal holes) from both production and presplit holes for both the current and previous blasts.

The Bulyanhulu Mine, Tanzania is constantly trialing ideas for improvements in the drill and blast process. The project work has resulted in a large number of choices in explosive type and charging methods being available for blast design. Interestingly, though booster sensitive bulk emulsion had been introduced to the site to reduce dilution, better results were being obtained from reduced charge columns (decoupled columns of poured anfo in 50mm pvc pipe) and pneumatically loaded anfo upholes, which had been traced. In order to compare the explosive type and charge up-methods, an explosives comparison trial was performed.

Westslope Cutthroat trout have declined in distribution and abundance across their range and currently occupy about 59% of their historic habitat. Due to hybridization with non-native species such as rainbow trout, genetically pure populations persist in only 10% of that range. A westslope cutthroat trout population with relatively high genetic purity (97%) and conservation importance persists in less than two linear stream miles in the headwaters of the South Fork Madison River in southwest Montana. The relative purity of this population has been maintained through the presence of a downstream intermittent reach. However, spring flows fill the intermittent reach, creating a connection between occupied westslope cutthroat trout habitat in the headwaters and the habitat of competing trout species downstream.

In March 2010 the Boral Linwood Quarry, Adelaide South Australia, implemented the blasting contractors Monte Carlo Blast Vibration Model as part of their blast design process. The Linwood Quarry was developing an area where blasting activities were marginally complying with the statutory vibration limits. Compliance to the statutory limits was only being achieved through the use of small blasts (less than 15 000 T (14 763 ton)) at a high cost to the quarry.

PT Freeport Indonesia is a block cave mine that now utilizes an advanced undercut method to set up the min in the Deep Ore Zone (DOZ). In this method a slice of rock (undercut) is broken such that it sits on top of the drawbell level. The drawbells are developed to channel the broken ore into the extraction level and to enable the caving orebody to be drawn out in an even and controlled manner. These drawbells are difficult to form due to the small amount of void that can be developed in the low strength rock before firing. Starting with two rises of 2m square, the void ratio for the entire drawbell around 6%, which would normally result in a frozen and unproductive blast. Orica -Mining Services have worked with PT Freeport in a collaborative effort to find a solution to the mining problem. With excellent control of timing of the blasting it is possible to get fluid flow of blasted rock out of the draw points such that more void can be made available for blasting the remaining parts of the drawbell. The i-konTM electronic blasting system gives the exacting control of timing within the blast to achieve this Dynamic Void Generation (DVG). The solution stops the need to charge close to brows in the drawbells and reduces the cost and time related to developing initial blast voidage. This paper identifies the results of the trials including design, photographic evidence and vibration analysis. The flexibility and accurate timing of this electronic blasting system has enabled single hole initiation rather than 4 or more holes being initiated together, thereby reducing the damaging vibrations to the extraction level.

In late 2008 Xstrata Newlands Coal Mine in Central Queensland and Orica Mining Services engaged in discussion to investigate methodologies to change their current mining practices and overcome the issues in the mining of steeply dipping coal seams, the associated coal loss risk and to assist in improving mining productivity. A strategy was developed and it was determined that through-seam blasting was essential to the success of winning the coal from the Wollombi Pit at Newlands.

On December 26, 1994, at 1:00 am, Santa Fe Pacific Gold's Twin Creeks Mine experienced a major highwall failure involving over 2.5 million tons. The resulting effects of this slide were thousands of ounces of gold that were now deferred and an unstable wall above which made mining the slough material unsafe.
