Respect for mining in Botswana is long-standing. This article looks at Africa's most transparent mining regime and some of its ambitious plans. Botswana's mining industry value is forecast to average 5.2% growth from 2014-2018 with solid growth for the diamond sector and acceleration of coal production. Respect for the country's mining regime is maintained in the Fraser Institute 2014 annual survey where Botswana occupies the 26th position of 122 administrations. Whilst spontaneous combustion has never been considered a major problem in south Durham, certain collieries in the area have a history of heatings and precautions are essential. Three collieries are affected - Shotton, Vane Tempest and Seaham - and in the case of the last two, there are huge areas of high quality coal to work under conditions where spontaneous combustion is a real hazard. The seam being extracted has an immediate roof in goaf left by the incomplete extraction of a contiguous seam worked before the turn of the century. The presence of residual coal stocks and old roadways and cavities adds to the difficulty of preventing unwanted air movement. The main preventive measures adopted are the construction of airtight gateside packs and the use of sprayed surface coatings in the gate. Sampling systems and sampling points are described and, in particular the field of continuous monitoring from the surface is examined. The resulting possibility of a quantitative as well as qualitative assessment of the preventative measures required is discussed.

A study of samples from three sectors of the mine, which was worked from Roman times to 1991, revealed different textures, mineral associations and distributions of trace elements in the sulphides. In the last decade before closure, grades of sphalerite concentrate were in the range 51.67-53.30% Zn and 2.21-2.86% Pb and of galena concentrate 69.43-71.62% Pb and 4.70-8.36% Zn, while the estimated by-product germanium content of sphalerite concentrates sold was 300-400 g/t. Passing the different run-of-mine materials through the same concentrator flowsheet produced middlings and tailings during the preconcentration processing. Separate and alternative treatment of run-of-mine products would have yielded improved recoveries of sphalerite and galena and better values of by-product germanium and cadmium

An experimental flash reactor has been developed to simulate the operation of an industrial flash-smelter reaction shaft. Four concentrate materials of differing mineralogical compositions were characterised and then oxidised in the reaction shaft. The products were examined by chemical analysis to determine the extent of oxidation and by electron-probe microanalysis to determine the fate of individual particles. This programme of work enabled the influence of mineralogical composition and particle size on the extent of oxidation to be assessed

It is now widely accepted that the metal-rich waters found in the oil wells are possible present-day analogues of the mineralising solutions that formed the Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) deposits throughout mid-continental USA and elsewhere. A study characterising the trace-metal content provides additional circumstantial evidence for a genetic link between sediment-hosted mineral deposits and basin brines: Ag, Co, Ni, As and Mo, detected in the scale, are locally present in accessory minerals in MVT deposits and the levels of Ag found in the wells support the conclusion that sedimentary sources for silver should be considered in evaluating the origin of Pb-Zn-Ag deposits in sedimentary terrains

Risk management is concerned with the whole spectrum of financial, geological, engineering, legal, governmental, social and occasionally ethnic issues, concerned with mining projects. The inherent risks in mining operations are well publicised, but new issues and hazards arrive on the scene and lake precedence, but the older risks still remain, while insurance cover may not he ‘full cover’ in the future. It has long been recognised that quantitative approaches to risk analysis can play a major role, but although these methods are capable of considerable theoretical precision, the lack of sound risk input data and experienced personnel limits the usefulness of theoretical analysis. It can, however, greatly assist in comparing cases, in identifying areas of risk and help in the investment decision process. Its major contribution to a mining project is that it imposes an investigative discipline that also assists in improving the quantitative approach to risk analysis and hence risk management. Risk analysis and risk management also requires sound common sense and major inputs from experienced geologists, mining, mechanical, electrical and mineral processing engineers. The Engineering Council, in 1992, issued a ten point code of professional practice entitled ‘Engineers and Risk Issues’ (The Engineering Council. 1992), covering our professional responsibilities, the law, our conduct, the need for a systematic approach to risk issues, the use of professional judgement, communications, risk management, evaluation of risk, our professional development in this field and the encouragement of public awareness of risk issues. This is a specific area of training perhaps long neglected by our industry and academic institutions (Atkinson. 1983).

"The Trojan nickel deposit occurs within a pile of ultramafic lavas subjected to a lower amphibolite grade of metamorphism. The lavas form part of the Upper Greenstones (Bulawayan Group) of the Mazoe greenstone belt. The nickel mineralization occurs as disseminated, massive and near-massive sulphides. The massive and near-massive ore occurs along the basal contact of the serpentinite units and is overlain by the more abundant disseminated ore, which occurs within the serpentinite. The main sulphide minerals are pyrrhotite. pentlandite and chalcopvrite. Minor amounts of millerite and pvrite are present. The Ni : Cu ratio in all three types of ore averages 15:1.The intercumulus nature of sulphides in the near-massive ore and similar textures occasionally seen in the disseminated ore indicates a magmatic origin of the mineralization. The basal position of the near-massive and massive ore suggests that the sul­ phides settled out under gravity during the emplacement and crystallization of a peridotitic magma. The deposit has been deformed and some of the primary massive ore has been remobilized into veins and breccias. The disseminated mineralization now occurs mainly as blebs of sulphides intergrown with silicate minerals or as stringers of sulphides between foliation planes in the serpentinite."

Smelter-grade alumina is usually produced by the calcination of gibbsite. The ideal energy requirements for the calcination of gibbsite have been analysed and compared with the actual energy consumption of some industrial calcination processes. The consumption of most of these is considerably in excess of the ideal. Methods suggested for calcining dry gibbsite feeds which claim energy savings of 10-14% consume 26-34% more than the ideal energy requirement for dry feeds. This study indicates that it should be possible to recover appreciably more energy, giving further improvements in fuel efficiency, both in existing gibbsite calcination processes and in methods that have been proposed for the stagewise calcination of dry gibbsite

"Changes proposed in 1969 to modernize legislation governing the exploitation of mineral deposits in the United Kingdom serve as the basis for a discussion of what is considered to be a desirable framework for future legislative proposals.Proposals with regard to prospecting and exploration, evaluation, and acquisition and exploitation are considered, as are suggestions relating, inter alia, to aerial surveys and land restoration.It is concluded that without legislation along the lines proposed there can be no significant revival of metal mining in Britain."

For conventional aerospace aluminium alloys of the 2000 (copper) and 7000 (zinc, magnesium) series the recycling of process scrap from both metal suppliers and aircraft manufacturers is a well-established, worldwide industry. The recent introduction of a new family of alloys that incorporates lithium has posed a new challenge to the recycling industry owing to the high cost of lithium, its high reactivity to the atmosphere and to refractories and its absence from the specifications of all other registered alloys. Various process options for recycling have been identified, but vacuum distillation has been selected as the most cost-effective and technically feasible solution. Experimental work established that the separation of Li from AI-Li scrap is feasible and an industrial process has been designed. The economics of Li recovery are very sensitive to the AI-Li content of the feed material. Owing to the design of aerospace vehicle manufacturing plants it is expected that the swarf will be mixed with other alloys. A method of enriching this feed has been developed that is based on the control of swarf morphology by thermal and mechanical treatments as a precursor to eddy-current separation. After eddy-current separation and vacuum distillation small proportions of Li are retained in the AI residue. The effects of this on the properties of conventional AI-Si shape-casting alloys were investigated and safe threshold levels have been established.

An intensive investigation into modern roof support technology, including hy draulic and control systems, has been carried out against the perspective of global development and support behaviour on longwall faces across the Indian sub-continent. The wide ranging study examined various types and designs of modern supports used in seams of varying thickness and inclination where caving and stowing were practised. Consideration has been given to structural analysis, support resistance, the various forces acting over and on the powered supports and to support compatibility. The examination of the phy sical parameters has been allied to field experience and, together, have led to the formulation of standard designs for both the powered support structure and structural systems. A realistic mathematical model has been formulated for calculating the capacity of roof support requirements resulting from the actual behaviour of the immediate roof stratum. As a result of the work, it should be possible to readily select the most appropriate type of support sy stem for the conditions and longwall mining method that is to be employed.

"The absence of homogeneity, in dust-clouds underground indicates the use of a method in which the volume of air sampled is an appreciable proportion of the total volume under consideration. Of the available methods, only the impinger and gravimetric techniques seem to comply with this requirement. In practice, greater efficiency of collection of the smaller particles is possible by the use of a gravimetric filter than with the impinger. For this reason if, as seems desirable, a standard method of sampling be sought, the adoption of a gravimetric technique is to be recommended.Provided that the amount of dust collected is reasonably large, the paper filter would seem to be preferable to the solid crystal type of filter on account of its greater convenience in use.Alternative methods of sampling are desirable to cover the wide range of practical conditions."

Two graphical techniques which are commonly used to assess batch separations are analysed in terms of reaction kinetics to provide a more powerful method of evaluation. An alternative and more general approach, based on the selection and application of suitable efficiency criteria, is also presented. The method proposed distinguishes between selection and collection efficiency in flotation and can be used to estimate the degree of liberation in the feed. The study included lode zones at Wheal Pendarves, South Crofty and Rosevale tin mines. Fluid inclusion-containing microfractures are a common feature of the granites and typically show a preferred orientation over quite a large area. The close proximity of a dominant vein or fault controls their density and orientation. They are important pathways for fluids and provide a marker for palaeo-fluid flow. Overprinting provides a reliable representation of the evolution of the hydrothermal fluids in a vein system from early magmatic fluids to late-stage meteoric and basinal brine input. Measurement of microfracture orientation allows estimation of the regional stress regime during a specific hydrothermal event. Since micro- and macro-structures can generally be reliably correlated, these studies assist in modelling the detailed development of complex vein systems. Microfracture density is a good measure of palaeo-permeability, with implications for control of wallrock alteration. The determination of the location and density of microfractures can assist the mine geologist in identifying the location of potentially economic vein structures where macroscopic markers are absent

Long-term production planning in open-pit mines requires the determination of cut-off grade, mining and milling production rates, a mining sequence, mine life and ultimate pit limits. Since these variables interact in a circular fashion, a genuine solution to the problem necessitates their simultaneous determination. A methodology with this capability is described. This comprises a group of heuristic algorithms and an unconventional dynamic programming algorithm. The method is demonstrated using data for a gold deposit in the western USA

An algorithm is proposed for updating the probability of slope failure on the basis of sequential testing using Bayesian probability theory. The approach is novel and computationally straightforward since, unlike other methods, updating of the probability of failure is carried out directly. This is because the probability is treated as a random variable whereas other methods have considered it as a purely deterministic value or as a function of shear strength parameters that are updated individually. The prior information required for the Bayesian analysis is obtained by a conventional probabilistic analysis. An exponential distribution is then used for the probability of failure, applying the principle of maximum entropy. This distribution is continually updated for individual slope cells, where repetitive excavation creates several such cells and a corresponding series of Bayesian estimates of the probability of failure is obtained. The approach is applicable to most simulations but there are limitations on its use. A more mathematically rigorous refinement using the beta distribution is currently under development
