"Gold-bearing mineralization at Anomaly A occurs in polydeformed Ordovician turbidites of the Kendall Mountain Formation of the St. Croix belt in southwestern New Brunswick, and is hosted by WSWtrending, shallow-dipping, brittle-ductile high-strain zones associated with the latest stage of the second of four regional deformation events. Gold-bearing syn-deformational stockwork, massive, and multiply brecciated quartz-sulfide veined zones form irregular pods and sheets up to several meters thick, which contain arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, stibnite, and a variety of rare minerals that are gold-bearing. Mineralized zones are enveloped by locally auriferous, weakly to intensely altered wall rock. Vein paragenesis includes: (1) early (pre- to syn-D2) quartz-chlorite veins that are largely the product of migration of quartz by pressure solution; (2) crosscutting, multiphase, vuggy quartz-sulfide veins that contain most of the gold and are interpreted to be structurally controlled; (3) late, crosscutting, nondeformed, non-gold-bearing veins containing laumontite, chlorite, muscovite, quartz, fluorite, and base metal sulfides. Carbonate-poor alteration associated with zones of gold mineralization is lithology-specific, and appears to reflect overprinting of multiple events. Major elements removed during alteration include Si, Na, Mn, and Mg. The minor and trace elements removed include Co, Li, Sc, and possibly Sr, Ni, and Zn. Minor and trace elements added include Au, Ag, As, Sb, S, and possibly F, Cu, Pb, and Zr. On the basis of proximity, time constraints, and a similar ore mineral assemblage, gold mineralization at Anomaly A is interpreted to be a distal equivalent of the intrusion-related gold mineralization at the nearby Clarence Stream Main zone deposit. "The Yukon's numerous (185) placer gold mines are still a major social and economic force in this developing economy. Gold recovery at each of the various sluiceboxes is not optimized due to extremely difficult sampling logistics and a shortage of technical expertise and industrial research.At each of six operating placer mines, numerous sluicebox tailings samples were collected with hand held sample cutters and combined into large (2-7 cubic yards) duplicate samples. The entire sample volumes were screened and processed on a shaking table to determine gold losses. Conventional waste management practices produce two waste streams for the construction of separate disposal facilities. The design of tailings impoundments is usually controlled by physical stability. Waste rock materials offer high shear strength characteristics for waste dump construction, however the hydraulic properties promote oxidation. The problem of oxidation is significantly reduced for tailings due to a fine texture that augments water saturation. Co-mixing of tailings and waste rock involves the intimate blending of tailings and waste rock to create a new material with superior physical and hydraulic properties. The new material has a low hydraulic conductivity, low compressibility, high water retention capacity and high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock restrict oxygen entry and water seepage to minimize acid generation and metal leaching. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock may be used to construct cover systems, internal barriers and seals, confinement structures and full depth waste repository. The results of a laboratory program to characterize the physical and hydraulic properties of Comix tailings and waste rock are presented here. Various ratios of tailings were blended with three distinct waste rock materials. The saturated hydraulic conductivity for the Co-mixed materials was found to vary between 2 x 10-7 m/s and 5 x 10-8 m/s depending on blend ratio, waste rock type and compaction. This paper introduces concepts for the co-disposal of tailings with waste rock and evaluates the hydraulic behaviour of a Co-Mix waste system. The potential benefits of Co-Mix are shown for a typical mine.

"This paper describes the performance properties of a new 95 ksi minimum yield strength, oil well casing grade designed specifically to resist hydrogen sulphide stress corrosion cracking, SSCc. The new grade, Soo-95SS, demonstrates NACE Tensile threshold values greater than 90% specified minimum yield strength, SMYS, and NACE Bent Beam values in excess of 12.7 x 1()4 psi. The new Soo-9588 grade also exhibits superior collapse and notch toughness values. IntroductionIn recent years, a trend toward casing grade specialization has resulted in the introduction of numerous proprietary grades designed specifically for particular production environments, In response, Algoma Steel has developed, as part of a "" grade for service"" philosophy, two new 95 ksi minimum yield grades. The two grades are Soo-95, High Collapse (HC), and Sour Service (SS). This paper describes the development of Soo-95 Sour Service.Four main objectives were established:1. Definition of the steelmaking and continuous cast processing practices2. Determination of the acceptable maximum and minimum levels for all chemical elements3. Definition of special processing requirements4. Definition of the physical characteristics and ranges of the product properties.This paper provides a description of the experimental approach, followed by a presentation and discussion of the trial results . "In a previous publication, the depressant action of Mg above pH 10 on Cu-activated sphalerite was described (Lascelles et al., 2001). In the present communication, a second role, aggregation is introduced.Aggregation (i.e., the tendency of particles to cluster) is measured using settling rate and turbidity converted to an aggregation index (AI) where 0 corresponds to dispersed and 1 to aggregated. Surveys of Cu and Zn flotation stages at four concentrators showed the A1 increased significantly above pH 9. The metal ions identified in the process waters, principally Ca and Mg, were tested to determine which might be responsible. The presence of Mg was found to be the most important, 50 ppm Mg having a greater impact than 500 ppm Ca fkom pH 9 to 1 1. In one plant, poor repeatability in A1 was suspected to be related to varying Mg levels; doping with Mg significantly increased AI.In both aggregation and depression, therefore, the common feature is the impact of Mg at pH > 9. Over this pH range Mg forms a range of hydroxy species, including Mg(OH)2 precipitates. Suggested aggregation and depression mechanisms associated with these precipitates are introduced. Possible problems and opportunities arising from the findings are discussed.INTRODUCTIONProcess waters in flotation circuits contain a variety of metal ions that may introduce unwanted activation or depression. Two common metal ions are calcium and magnesium. Typical concentrations are in the range 50 ppm Mg and 500 ppm Ca (Marticorena et al., 1994, Basilio et al., 1996, Negeri et al., 1997, Nesset et al., 1998)."

"In western Canada, many new wells contain a significant fraction of H2S. As well, many older wells become increasingly sour over their operating lifetime. For these reasons, there has been increased demand for linepipe and casing for sour service applications in recent years. This paper will review the metallurgical factors which must be considered in designing steels for such applications. IPSCO’s development of linepipe and casing, and experience in fabricating products to meet test standards specified for sour service applications will be summarized. IntroductionWestern Canada produces the majority of Canada’s domestic crude oil and natural gas. A complex system of pipelines has been built to gather the oil and gas from the fields for transport to refining and/or cleaning operations. The gas carried in these pipelines can be either sweet or sour (i.e. containing no H2S or containing H2S) depending on the nature of the field from which it came. Many new fields contain a significant fraction of H2S and many older fields become more sour as their time in production increases. This uncertainty regarding product condition influences the user’s choice of materials for both casing and pipeline applications.It is well known (Merrick, 1989) that hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) will occur in steel when three conditions exist simultaneously: (1) the presence of H2S gas, (2) moisture, and (3) a susceptible material. Steelmakers can only address the latter of these factors. Development of steels to meet test requirements of sour service has been a major focus of IPSCO’s development work for several years."

"This paper outlines the history of steel linings in the Autogenous Mills, the factors influencing the decision to convert to rubber lining, and the operating and cost experience with the rubber liners to date. INTRODUCTIONSherman Mine is an open pit iron ore mining, concentrating and pelletizing operation located at Temagami, Ontario. The operation employs 392 hourly employees and 81 salaried employees and has an annual capacity of over one million L.T. of high quality iron ore pellets produced from low-grade magnetite ore.The Sherman Mine is a joint venture; 90% owned by Dominion Foundries and Steel Limited (Dofasco) of Hamilton, Ontario, and 10% owned by the Tetapaga Mining Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company of Cleveland, Ohio. The operation and management of the mine is by Cliffs of Canada, Limited. Development of the property was started in 1965, with pellet plant production beginning on March 17, 1968. At the present time, the orebodies contain sufficient reserves to sustain operations at current production levels for 30 years. Mining was originally carried out in three orebodies, the North, South, and West pits. The North Pit has been exhausted and mining operations ceased in the spring of 1980. A fourth pit, the East Pit, will be developed during the early 1980's."

"Falconbridge Copper's Lac Shortt gold mine is located in northern Quebec approximately 300 km northeast of Val D'Or and 100 km west of Chibougamau (Pig. 1). Engineering for the mill commenced in early 1983 with a feasibility study. The plant was commissioned in the fall of 1984 at a capital cost of approximately $12 million. Design capacity was 750 tpd which was increased in the fall of 1985 to the current level of 1200 tpd.The ore at Lac Shortt is free milling, grading an average of 5.5 g/t gold which is finely disseminated throughout the host rock. Pyrite at 3 to 5% by volume and traces of copper mineralization are also present.Some of the latest gold processing techniques known at the time of design were incorporated into the mill. These include carbon-in-pulp, pressure stripping, electrowinning of pregnant solution and induction furnace refining. The plant also features several innovations such as a unique interstage carbon retention screen in the CIP circuit and the outdoor location of the cyanidation feed thickener, mill solution tank and reagent storage silos despite -40° Celsius winter temperatures.This paper describes the current mill process and discusses some of the problems encountered during the first two years of the plant's operation. CRUSHINGThe Lac Shortt surface crushing facilities are located in a separate building, isolated from the wet processing circuits for dust and noise control reasons. The crushing plant equipment was originally utilized at the Manibridge operation in northern Manitoba where it had been designed to operate at 135 tph. However, at Lac Shortt a rate of only 80 tph has been achievable to date, mainly due to the hardness and frequently slabby breakage characteristics of the ore. Therefore, in order to meet fine ore requirements at the current mill throughput of 1200 tpd, the crushing circuit is run seven days a week. 24 hours a day. Availability has been averaging 65%."

Since its inception CEMI (Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation) has focused on facilitating innovative solutions to the mining industry in six strategic research areas; GeoRisk, ConstructMine, ValueMine, FindMine, SustainMine and MineTech (visit www.miningexcellence.ca for details). This paper focuses on CEMI?s largest project to date, Ventilation on Demand (VOD). Energy consumption in mines can account for upwards of 40% of a mines operating cost, with a significant portion of this been consumed by the ventilation requirements. VOD provides a significant opportunity to reduce overall mine ventilation requirements and subsequently energy costs, while potentially increasing mine productivity. CEMI is currently in year 2 of an assessment of VOD, focusing on the financial, physical and equipment viability of utilizing such systems in both new and existing mines. This two year program, to be completed by March 31, 2011, is designed to systematically assess such a system to determine if and when it could effectively be applied in underground mines. The paper will describe the process by which the project was initiated, the demonstration projects established to capture data, the means to interpret the data and the modelling developed to calibrate and predict ventilation system requirements.

"Plastic Filled Valley (PFV) wire rope represents a significant development over the design of conventional wire rope. A sealing thermoplastic is impregnated under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure into a conventional lubricated wire rope to produce a lattice of plastic which surrounds and separates the strands from each other and from the core. Metal-to-metal contact is thereby alleviated and the lubricant is sealed in. The wear resistance, rope breaking load, fatigue resistance and crushing resistance are all increased. The result is a rope which offers exceptional service life.Laboratory tests carried out in Canada and at the University of Stuttgart, in West Germany, confirm the increase in fatigue life. The field trials conducted so far have indicated that the results obtained in the laboratory can be duplicated in the field.IntroductionIn times of double -digit inflation, the consideration given to operating costs throughout industry commands considerable attention. The same can be said of the mining industry. A set of large-diameter wire ropes used on the huge draglines in strip mining can cost in excess of $100,000. Because a machine may use three sets of rope s each year, it is clear that the costs of wire rope can contribute a considerable percentage to any operating budget. As wire rope is a product which is used extensively throughout the mining industry, it would appear timely to turn our attention to any ""Method of Extending Wire Rope Service Life"" in order that wire rope life can be optimized and wire rope costs can be minimized."

"In most mineral processing operations the term audit is usually reserved for the exercise of checking financial records and/ or safety practices. While these activities are time consuming, no one disputes their necessity or value. If we subject these areas to such careful scrutiny, why is it that we don't normally apply the same principles to critically examine process operation. After all, the operating efficiency of the plant impacts directly on the measures of profitability.A mineral processing plant is a complex system that has a number of distinct, but mutually dependent elements: process equipment, instrumentation, operating policies, maintenance policies, control strategies and people. To ensure maximum economic performance, in the dynamic environment that characterizes a concentrator, requires a periodic review of each of these areas. However, to be useful, the study must be based on sound metallurgical principles and be conducted in a highly focused manner. Experience teaches us that the exercise is very revealing and potentially very rewarding.This paper will discuss the process audit process and illustrate its potential value through illustration taken from plant studies.IntroductionThe last twenty years have seen tremendous technological and organizational changes sweep the minerals industry. Process control systems, on-stream analyzers, and gold recovery techniques barely conceived twenty years ago are now incorporated in virtually all new installations in an effort to maximize operating efficiencies. In conjunction with these developments, changes in the way plants are managed, down-sizing of technical staff, reduction in the size of operating crews, and the flattening out of the management structure have significantly reduced operating costs. As a result, plants are making more efficient use of our natural resources, minimizing the costs of production, and in turn maximizing operating profits. Or are they?"

An EAF slag properly saturated in MgO results in increased refractory service life and steelmaking efficiency. A computer model was developed using phase equilibrium data from the MgO-CaO-SiO2-FeO, MgO-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 and SiO2-CaO-Al2O3-FeO systems to predict MgO saturated slag chemistry. This model has been successfully applied to a commercial EAF, although disciplined plant practices are required to achieve benefits from slag chemistry control.

The fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) mining model has significant implications for the industry as it plays an important role in fulfilling the economic, social and workforce needs of the contemporary mining industry. It has increasingly been adopted in countries such as Canada and Australia, but is the current nature of the FIFO model challenging the place women have achieved in the mining workforce? Research in the mining and oil and gas industries reveals that major sources of stress for fly-in-fly-out mining workers are the times of parting and of reunion, the challenges in defining roles within the family, parenting, and conflict between spouses over the use of the leave time and money. So how are women in the industry coping with the FIFO schedules and consequent intermittent relationship with families and partners? How is the mining industry adapting to recruit and maintain female employees in FIFO operations? This paper describes an exploratory study conducted in Canada, which intended to provide some initial insights that might help us answer the questions above. There are several inferences made from this exploratory study. It is clear that FIFO poses significant challenges for both female and male workers. It is largely seen as rigid, extremely challenging for employees with young families and workers who are single mothers, and it is generally incompatible with starting a family and caring for small children. FIFO creates severe stress on relationships and on workers psychological well-being. It seems to be indeed harder for women, since they are often in lower paying positions and therefore have less financial reward for the FIFO lifestyle. On the other hand, FIFO creates the opportunity for young women, including Aboriginal women, to jump-start their careers, as well as opportunities for mature women to work while pursuing other personal interests during their time off. This paper concludes with recommendations to improve the FIFO system in order to increase the ability of mining companies to hire and retain women

The calibration of these instruments is not difficult but must be performed carefully and with consideration for the principles of X-ray spectrometry. A discussion of successful calibration procedures as well as examples of several common mistakes is presented.IntroductionOn-stream X-ray analyzers (OSA) have become an integral part of modem mineral dressing plants. Advances in instrumentation and computer software make the analysis of process streams fast, accurate and precise. Proper instrument calibration that respects the fundamentals of X-ray spectrometry is essential if the data generated are to be reliable. Often the importance of this task is underestimated and delegated to a person with inadequate XRF training. Successful OSA calibration is the result of careful, systematic procedures.On-stream analysis is perhaps the most important tool that has been provided for the concentrator metallurgist. Combined with powerful, low cost PC's and distributed control systems, real-time elemental analysis affords today's metallurgist many opportunities to troubleshoot and optimize his process.Before OSA, operators had to be very experienced if they were to achieve good results. Even with hourly grab samples, most changes in control approach would still be based on visual cues from the circuit and gut instinct. Real-time analyses have changed that completely.The last two decades have seen a persistent drive to reduce production costs. Operations utilizing OSA have been the most successful in this endeavor. Direct benefits from the application of OSA are fairly obvious. Operators are able to make incremental changes in operational parameters (e.g. reagent addition, pH, cell level), and immediately monitor the effects. Variations in the characteristics of the mill feed can be identified and addressed immediately. More progressive operations have linked analyses to control loops to adjust process setpoints ( e.g. reagent additions), and to change them automatically according to formulas based on previous experience."

The southwest wall of the Lornex Pit at the Highland Valley Copper mine has been experiencing slope displacements since 1978. Measures to manage the displacements on previous pushbacks have included stepping out, scheduling pushbacks to unload the crest of unstable areas, slope dewatering and mining with intensive slope monitoring. The final pushback on this wall is currently being mined and substantial modifications to the slope geometry could prove to be uneconomic. As a result, a campaign of surface water collection and diversion, horizontal drainhole drilling and deep well drilling is currently underway to maintain an acceptable degree of stability to the end of mine life. The various factors contributing to instability, including engineering geologic controls, rock mass strength, and surface and groundwater hydrology are presented. Movement trends, displacement magnitudes and stability analyses results are also discussed.

"The link between ore texture and mineral liberation has previously been established at a microscopic scale. To construct ore texture models that can be used in mining applications requires this relationship to be retained at a significantly larger scale. This is initially dealt with by finding a basic set of microtextures that form the elements of the ore textures at the next larger mesoscopic scale, simulating these mesotextures at a fine scale, then changing the support of the mesotexture simulations to generate the expected mining block/stope mesotexture distributions. Thus, a mutually exclusive and exhaustive set of spatially locatable mesotextures can be used to fully characterize the metallurgical properties of in situ material.A method that generates expected distributions of mesotextures for any mining block size or shape is proposed, and includes: (1) characterizing the spatial correlation of the set of mesotextures with a single covariance function; (2) generating multiple simulations of mesotextures at a fine scale; and (3) using the simulations at a fine scale to generate the expected mining block/stope mesotexture distributions. A case study, using the George Fisher sediment-hosted base metal deposit in Queensland Queensland, Australia, is developed to demonstrate the proposed methodology as well as show the inadequacy of off-the-shelf approaches.Mining-scale texture models can be used to improve the in situ discrimination of ore from waste by exploiting the joint spatial variability of grades and textures to quantify the expected metal recovery of in situ material, then calculate local marginal cut-off grades. An artificial case study is presented to demonstrate the changes in ore/waste selection when considering ore texture models compared to constant metal recoveries."

"A general computer program has been written to calculate material balances using multiple regression techniques. The program can handle metal assays or size distribution data obtained in multiple surveys of the flotation circuit. The ""best fit"" weight split is calculated between the input and product streams by minimizing the sum of squares of the residual errors using all of the available data. The program includes an assay adjustment feature in which each assay is recalculated to fit the ""best fit"" mass balance. Thus assay or sampling errors can be easily identified. Also the assays can be statistically weighted so the most precise measurements are given the most influence on the material balance. The computer output reports the mass balance, the actual and corrected assays, the percent metal recoveries and the significance and confidence levels for the weight splits.The program enables a rapid and accurate evaluation of mass balances from large masses of data obtained in multiple surveys around a flotation circuit. The effects of changing process variables can be quickly evaluated with statistical confidence."

"There is a general consensus that, in order to widen the utilization of Western Canadian coals, a major effort must be devoted to their transportation, utilization of fines, beneficiation and mining techniques. It is postulated that the concept studied extensively over the last four years at Alberta Research Council (ARC), and based on a combination of hydraulic mining, selective agglomeration with bitumen and/ or heavy oil, pipeline transportation and oil recovery from agglomerates, offers a particularly attractive solution to the problems associated with extraction, beneficiation, transportation and utilization of Western bituminous and subbituminous coals. Results of preliminary experimental work on the feasibility of pipeline agglomeration of metallurgical coal and hydraulic transportation of agglomerates are presented and discussed in the context of conventional agglomeration techniques in stirred tanks. IntroductionAlberta is endowed with enormous reserves of low-sulphur coals which could attract considerable attention of potential customers, but the remote location of this province handicaps its competitiveness on the world market. It is known that Alberta's Cretaceous, particularly metallurgical, coals differ significantly from their Carboniferous counterparts; current R&D work on indigenous coals should continue to expand in order to encourage overseas client s to use these coals more extensively.There is a genera l consensus that, in order to widen the utilization of Western coals, a major effort must be devoted to their transportation, utilization of fines, beneficiation and mining techniques."

Following initial discovery in 1991, BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc opened Canada?s first diamond mine, the Ekati Diamond Mine TM (Ekati) in the Northwest Territories on October 14th, 1998. Four short years later on November 29th, 2002, saw the opening of North America?s first underground diamond mine - the Koala North mine. Nestled between the original Panda open pit and the new Koala pit which is in the early stages of production, Koala North represents the only underground kimberlite mining venture in arctic conditions outside the new underground mines being developed by ALROSA in the Yakutsk region of eastern Russia. Extensive underground kimberlite mining has been practiced in the Republic of South Africa for much of the 20th century and continues today. Underground mining represents a key component of the long term business plan for the Ekati. As various open pits reach their economic limit, continued recovery of high value ore at depth is dependent upon the ability to productively mine the kimberlite pipes by underground methods. As a function of its location, size, and value, the Koala North pipe is ideally positioned to host the first underground mine at Ekati . In addition to being a production source for the operation, Koala North is designed as a learning mine, from which to gain valuable experience in preparation for the potential mining of other larger, higher value pipes by underground methods in the future. Fortuitously Koala North was available for development so the learnings could be integrated into the Panda mine design prior to completion of the Panda pit. Establishing our first underground diamond mine, and applying the open benching mining method in arctic conditions brings a unique combination of mining challenges together in a harsh climate and remote environment. This paper examines the design and establishment of the Koala North mine. Discussion includes experiences gained from the first year of development, production start-up, and provides a brief overview of our potential underground future at Ekati .
