"The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.1 km long water-diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, which was excavated by a 14.4 m diameter tunnel boring machine. The excavated rock types included limestone, sandstone, siltstone, shale and mudstone. Based on observations and measurements the overbreak was divided into four zones. Approximately half the tunnel length was excavated through the Queenston Formation, which locally is a shale to mudstone. Three of the four overbreak zones were within the Queenston. Zone 1 includes the formations above the Queenston Formation, Zones 2 and 4 are border regimes with little or no influence from St. Davids Buried Gorge and Zone 3 is the area influenced by the gorge. Zones 2 through 4 can be generally summarized as having overbreak as the result of stress induced spalling. Zone 2 marks the transition from slabbing at the Whirlpool contact in the stress shadow to spalling towards Zone 3. The behaviour of Zone 3 is interrupted from the typical high stress behaviour due to the presence of St. Davids Buried Gorge. As the tunnel passed from the gorge the high regional stresses induce spalling, which creates the typical notch shaped overbreak geometry of Zone 4.Three modelling approaches were used to back analyze the brittle failure process at the NTP: damage initiation and spalling limit, laminated anisotropy modelling, and ubiquitous joint approaches. Analyses were conducted for three tunnel chainages: 3+000, 3+250, and 3+500 m because the overbreak depth increased from 2 to 4 m. All approaches produced similar overbreak geometries to those measured. The laminated anisotropy modelling approach was able to produce overbreak depths and chord closures closest to those measured, using a joint normal to shear stiffness ratio between 1 and 2. The back analysis results were able to produce sets of stress and strength inputs for different sections of the tunnel at the transition from overbreak Zone 3 to 4. The back analysis procedure demonstrates the importance of including the anisotropic stiffness in the numerical modelling approach to correctly capture the overbreak geometry and deformations around underground excavations."

"Pyritic massive sulphide deposits lie conformably above submarine volcanic rocks, and beneath siliceous and manganiferous iron formations. The massive bodies are often zoned, with a barren pyritic top grading downward into pyrite with sphalerite, and occasionally galena, and a chalcopyrite-rich base. They are frequently brecciated, like the lavas beneath them, which contain pyrite and chalcopyrite as coatings on joints and fractures and as dispersed grains. The lavas also exhibit propylitic, argillic and silicic alteration. These sulphide deposits appear to have formed on sea bottom from fluids escaping through the lavas during periods of exhalative and sometimes explosive volcanism. The process may be comparable to the present deposition of base metals from hot brines in the Red Sea. Some porphyry copper deposits resemble the altered, sulphide-impregnated lavas which lie beneath bodies of pyritic massive sulphide. In porphyry copper deposits, pyrite and chalcopyrite occur as veinlets and dispersed grains in intensely fractured tuffs, flows, sub-volcanic intrusions or other host rocks, characterized by propylitic, argillic and silicic alteration. Metal zoning is present; sphalerite and galena often occur in manganiferous veins peripheral to a shell of pyritic veinlets which encloses the mineable zone of chalcopyrite-bearing veinlets. This sulphide distribution appears to have formed from hydrothermal fluids escaping, either passively or violently, from solidifying magma. The fluids may be comparable to hot brines encountered by drilling in the Salton Sea area of California.There are also important differences between massive sulphide and porphyry copper deposits. The former usually occur in differentiated, mafic-to-felsic subaqueous volcanic rocks, whereas porphyry copper deposits are often associated with shallow plutons and subaerial volcanic rocks of intermediate to felsic composition. Calcic-sodic metasomatism accompanies the massive sulphides, whereas potassic metasomatism characterizes the porphyry cop.per deposits. Further, ages of massive sulphides range from Archean (Keewatin) to Tertiary, but porphyry coppers are Triassic to Tertiary in age. These similarities and differences suggest that massive sulphide and porphyry copper deposits are related tectonically and metallogenetically. The former were generated during early stages of crustal evolution, particularly in Archean time, and were repeatedly derived during early stages of younger, individual tectonic cycles. In contrast, the porphyry coppers developed during the later stages of crustal evolution - later in terms of both absolute age and relative age within younger individual tectonic cycles. They appear in younger rocks generally, and specifically in rocks involved in events of the middle and late tectonic stages of orogenic belts. The massive sulphide deposits are of early-magmatic eugeosynclinal affiliation, whereas the porphyry deposits formed in late-magmatic, predominantly subvolcanic settings at the edge of continental plates, where contemporaneous exhalative volcanism was mainly a subaerial phenomenon. Transitional types of deposits exist and are found on continental margins with flanking eugeosynclinal sequences."

Four methods of measuring mineral abundance in a rock are examined for their potential in assaying for high-tech industrial minerals. One method uses X-ray powder-diffraction data and the other three rely on whole rock chemical data and information on mineral assemblages and mineral compositions. All four methods were employed to estimate wollastonite content in diamond drill core of skarn collected as part of an exploration program and are compared to visual estimates of wollastonite content from core logs. These techniques for assaying wollastonite span a considerable range ofaccuracy and expense, and combined, define a non-linear relationship between these variables. Accuracy increases rapidly relative lo expense up to total costs of about $50 per analysis. Assay methods in the $50-100 per analysis range have associated errors of 5-10% relative and probably suffice for most exploration programs. Improvements in accuracy above this level require a much larger investment. The most expensive assay technique (-$300 per analysis) yields the most accurate measurement of grade (relative error -1%). Its application may best be limited to periodic checks on other assay techniques and for fine-tuning ofmineral separation procedures.

Copper electrowinning at Duisburger Kupferhuette was introduced in March 1975. The electrowinning plant has a capacity of 10,000 mT of copper cathodes a year. The cuprous oxide feed material is an intermediate product of the treatment of the leach solutions, originating from chloridizing roasting of pyrite cinders. This material is characterized not only by a wide spectrum of accompanying impurities, but also by an unusually high level of precious metals. As the priority set was the production of high-purity cathodes. there was a need for developing a process which would be suited to treat complex leach liquors . The process adopted consist s of an oxidizing leach in spent electrolyte, followed by two- stage purification, By this means. a low- acid pregnant copper electrolyte is obtained free of elements detrimental to copper quality. Electrowinning is carried out at a current density of 200 A / m2 in the presence of 10 g/l zinc. The electrowon copper has a conductivity of at least 101.4% lACS and a softening temperature not exceeding 200°C, which makes it a suitable product for continuous casting and dip ?forming.

"Three main types of base metal sulphide mineralization are present in the Timmins area:(1) -Massive and stringer-type copper-zinc deposits occurring mainly in pyroclastic rocks, as typified by the mines of Kam-Kotia, Jameland and Canadian Jamieson, or within or close to possible breccia pipes as shown by the Genex and Kidd Creek mines. With the exception of the Kidd Creek mine, all of these orebodies occur northwest of Timmins (Kamiskotia area) and appear to lie within or close to a major center of volcanic activity characterized by a thick accumulation of felsic pyroclastic rocks and subordinate epizonal intrusions. The margins of the rhyolitic pile are interfingered with mafic volcanics; overlying sedi-ments mark the termination of a vol-canic cycle. The copper-zinc deposits in the Kamiskotia area are confined to a particular stratigraphic unit. Ore-bearing solutions were probably derived from the intrusive complex of the volcanic pile.(2) -Porphyry copper deposit of the Mcintyre mine. The deposit occurs in a quarz porphyry intrusion related to the volcanism in the area (Hurst, 1936). Mineralization was probably introduced at the time of intrusion, and subsequently redistributed within the porphyry during deformation. (3) -Massive and disseminated nickel mineralization, associated with serpentinized alpine-type ultramafic intrusions, as shown by the Alexo, McWatters, Hart, Inco and Texmont deposits. The nickel mineralization occurs at or near contacts of the serpentinites with felsic or mafic volcanics, or sulphide-bearing iron formations. The nickel deposits south of Timmins are confined to a particular stratigraphic unit along the margins of domical-shaped structures which appear to outline former volcanic centers. Sulphurization as pro-posed by Naldrett (1966) appears to be a workable hypothesis for the formation of some of the deposits."

Abstract-The mechanism by which stratiform ore deposits of PGE (platinum-group elements) are laid down in ultramafic igneous complexes is not completely clear. Early studies by the author and coworkers on numerical analyses of the convective cooling of low-Rayleigh-number magma chambers examined the effect of suspended crystal load on fluid density, and raised the possibility that the growth of the suspended crystal load during cooling could split a magma chamber into several convecting layers. The lower layers would have a higher content of refractory phases than the upper layers, which would consist of more evolved melt. This paper considers numerical modelling, as well as theoretical and experimental work in other fields dealing with suspended loads in fluids. The calculations, which are based on the physics of convecting magmas, yield quantitative relationships consistent with the observation that economically interesting stratiform PGE deposits are restricted to large magma bodies, and also yield estimation of the depth in a magma chamber at which certain grades of mineralization may occur.

"MgCl2 brines present a number of potential advantages for the processing of saprolite ores for nickel production. With a chloride system it is economically requisite to recover hydrochloric acid, which can be performed in a more energy efficient manner by precipitation and subsequent decomposition, as compared with conventional pyrohydrolysis. In addition, concentrated MgCl2 solutions enhance the activity of acid used, allow atmospheric leaching at elevated temperature and inhibit magnesium dissolution, which reduces acid consumption and increases metal selectivity. Leaching and iron control experiments have been conducted in concentrated MgCl2 brines, up to 4.5 m, to determine the most amenable process conditions. INTRODUCTIONChloride metallurgy has received an increasing amount of attention in recent years, especially with respect to the treatment of nickel laterites. Although the limonitic fraction can sometimes be economically treated by High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL), acid-consumption problems are encountered with the higher magnesium content of the saprolite fraction. As magnesium does not hydrolyze under HPAL conditions, as iron and aluminum do, any sulphuric acid used to leach magnesium is subsequently neutralized and wasted. In addition, this magnesium must later be disposed of in some fashion, further complicating the process. The most common method used to process saprolite is the Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RKEF). This uses a kiln to dry and preferentially reduce nickel, before sending the calcine to an electric furnace. Although nickel recoveries are high, and the problems of acid consumption are avoided, the capital and energy costs associated with this process are high (de Bakker, 2011).The problems outlined above have led to the investigation of an atmospheric chloride process for the treatment of saprolite ores. The use of a chloride system presents a number of advantages, but also a few limitations. Metal chlorides tend to be very soluble, with a few notable exceptions (silver, mercury and lead), allowing for smaller processing equipment through more concentrated solutions. This solubility also serves to reduce the potential for scale formation. In addition, a hydrochloric acid leach is more aggressive than a comparable sulphuric acid system, and the activity of the hydrogen ion can be augmented by further chloride addition (Peek, 2011). This activity augmentation in concentrated chloride systems, first reported by Jansz, has repeatedly been referenced as a motivating factor behind chloride hydrometallurgy (Jansz, 1983; Harris and Magee, 2003; Harris et al., 2004; Demopoulos et al., 2008; McDonald and Whittington, 2008; Demopoulos, 2011; Peek, 2011; Verhulst and Lakshmanan, 2011). This activity increase allows a similar amount of acid to perform more in a concentrated solution than in a dilute solution, decreasing overall acid requirements. As such, much focus has been placed on leaching in concentrated chloride systems, or brines, using calcium, magnesium or sodium as the cation (McDonald and Whittington, 2008)."

The mining industry consumes huge water volumes and the waste streams typically contain sulfate, which has caused problems to many operations around the world. Discharge of sulfate to fresh waters is being restricted as the sulfate load increases salinity and causes problems when sulfate is reduced to toxic H2S by natural bacteria. To reduce fresh water consumption, internal water recycling had become a necessity in metallurgical processes. However, the recycling causes accumulation of sulfate and other components in water, causing problems to process performance and increases scaling in piping and equipment. Few technically feasible water treatment processes exist in the market that can be applied to decrease sulfate concentration below gypsum saturation level: biological sulfate reduction, membrane separation, ion exchange, evaporation and chemical precipitation. Some of these technologies are effective for treating wastewater, but there is typically a highly concentrated sulfate fraction left requiring still further treatment. Outotec has developed a sulfate removal solution, Outotec Ettringite process, which allows flexible control of residual sulfate concentration, thereby opening doors for increased water recycle within processes and control of the sulfate in discharged waters. In this article the results and benefits of this novel process along with examples of operating costs are presented.

The mining industry is facing declining feed grades which require the mining and processing of larger volumes of material per tonne of product. Pre-concentration aims to remove barren material at as coarse a particle size and as early in the process as possible to reduce processing costs, energy consumption, water losses, and greenhouse gas emissions while increasing production and profitability. This may be achieved using bulk ore sorting—the separation of barren gangue from a fully loaded conveyor belt based on the grade as measured or inferred from a sensor. This paper evaluates the technical and economic viability of bulk ore sorting for the PanAust Phu Kham copper deposit in Lao PDR. Bulk ore sorting technology is described briefly along with discussion of appropriate sensor and diversion systems for the Phu Kham operation. To evaluate the economic implications, the actual mined material and costs from 2014 were used as the base-case. Sampling data was not available; therefore, the ore grade variability that would feed a bulk ore sorter was estimated using geo-statistical tools based on mine grade control data. The sorter performance when treating this material was simulated considering the accuracy of the sensor measurement and errors associated with material diversion. The impact on inferred cash flow was estimated for several different scenarios considering the additional costs for sorter operation and reject handling. The evaluation demonstrated that bulk ore sorting at Phu Kham has the potential to increase the amount of metal in product and/or reduce processing plant throughput (and costs) to improve the annual inferred cash flow for the conditions investigated. The sorter is the gatekeeper – only material above the cut-off grade (value-adding) reports to the processing plant; no waste dilutes the feed. Likewise, above cutoff grade material is not lost to waste; preventing lost revenue.

Significant progress has been made over the past few years on characterizing and understanding the hydrodynamic properties of frothers and collectors and their effect on flotation performance. This new understanding of the relationship between chemistry and hydrodynamics has dramatic implications for how flotation circuits should be controlled and optimized. Previous work has shown that choosing a frother of the right 'strength' is critical to the optimization process, and the work and discussion presented here serve to strengthen the argument. In addition, we know that collector chemistry may also influence hydrodynamic properties and needs to be taken into consideration. To achieve the desired outcome, the overall system of reagents and operating parameters must be considered. This paper describes and discusses some of the findings from recent research on frother and collector chemistry effects (on hydrodynamics), and how this knowledge can be used to improve flotation performance. Examples from plant experience are discussed.

The Falconbridge Matte Leach Process yields high-purity nickel chloride by selectively dissolving nickel from copper-nickel converter matte with hydrochloric acid , purifying the solution by solvent extraction and crystallizing NiCl2 4H2O by further acidifying the purified leach liquor. In the Kristiansand Matte Leach Plant, a granular oxide is produced by high-temperature hydrolysis of the nickel chloride for subsequent reduction to a high-purity granular metal product, designated NICKEL 98. This paper describes the investigation of on alternate route to processing nickel chloride in which high-quality cathode nickel is produced by electrowinning from all- chloride electrolyte. The investigation was made in a pilot circuit containing two production-size electrowinning tanks operated in conjunction with the commercial-scale leach plant.

In addition to the usual concerns, the fact that copper and zinc production at Flin Flon is closely integrated results in the unique situation where feed to the copper smelter typically contains 7% to 8% zinc. This paper discusses the ramifications to copper smelter operations resulting from the marriage of HBM&S' metallurgical plants. Distributions of impurities (specifically Zn, Pb, Ni, As, Bi, Sb, and Cd) are presented and operating practices designed to reduce the impact of impurities on anode copper quality are detailed.

Ltd. (HBM&s), has been operating its metallurgical complex located in Flin Flon, Manitoba, since 1930. The smelter and zinc plant were originally separate entities with respect to production. The smelting operation consisted of traditional multiple-hearth roasters, a reverberatory furnace and Peirce-Smith converters. The zinc plant also utilized multiple hearth roasters and then followed with sulphuric acid leaching, purification and electrowinning. The zinc plant also recovered cadmium from a separate purification/electrowinning circuit.The two plants operated essentially independently of each other until rising zinc levels in the copper concentrate and large stockpiles of zinc-rich leach residues prompted the construction of the fuming plant in 1949. The smelter used pulverized coal to reduce zinc oxide present in the reverb slag and then captured the resulting zinc bearing fume in the fuming plant baghouse. The fume was sent to a separate ""oxide roaster"" in the zinc plant where it was first roasted to remove halogens and then leached to recover the contained zinc. This oxide fume became a major source of feed to the zinc plant accounting for roughly one quarter of the total zinc production. Furthermore, through the smelter's treatment of sulphide leach residue, both copper and zinc recoveries were improved for the over-all complex."

"IntroductionNOTE.-All figures on the supply and consumption of coal in Canada cited in this paper were collected and reported by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. The friendly and efficient co-operation of the officials of the Bureau. is the foundation upon which it has been my privilege to rely in the preparation of this and two earlier papers ( 1). My thanks are due also to our own staff on the Dominion Coal Board, who spared neither time nor effort in helping to prepare this paper.STATISTICS are comparatively dull and, to many people, coal statistics are duller than most. Coal is, however, the one basic mineral upon which our whole way of life depends and it may be well if attention is drawn to this fact by an occasional statistical review of the coal position in Canada. The recent furore over the oil and gas discoveries has so obscured the basic position of coal in many minds that a little basic coal information may be useful. It is for this reason that, for the third successive year, a factual survey of the coal position is being presented.In the previous papers (1) explanations have been given of the basic considerations in the preparation of these reports and some special phases of the overall picture have been examined. "This article focuses on the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of homogeneous and heterogeneous rocks. Critical factors impacting the UCS of rocks are reviewed and then separate assessments of UCS data from homogeneous and heterogeneous rocks are presented. The variability (coefficient of variation) of UCS test results for homogeneous rocks is found to be generally <25% while for heterogeneous rocks the variability is >35%. Failure mode variation is found to be the cause of the variability of UCS test results in heterogeneous rocks. Empirical engineering design methods that use UCS as an input parameter are discussed and suggestions are provided for selecting appropriate UCS values.INTRODUCTIONThe UCS is one of the most commonly used rock engineering parameters whether for rock mass classification or for strength determination. The mean UCS and its variability are often assumed to represent a reliable rock material property. For the reasons discussed in this article, UCS is rarely representative of the intact rock UCS. The UCS test simply records the collapse load during uniaxial loading of a cylindrical specimen. As suggested by many, the UCS is an index rather than a unique engineering parameter. The UCS is thus a proxy for rock strength which depends on the loading rate (e.g., Bieniawski 1967), specimen geometry (e.g., Hudson et al., 1971), specimen size (e.g., Bieniawski 1968), and many other factors. Furthermore, the UCS is not the same as the Hoek-Brown strength criterion parameter sci.There are differences in opinion on what is commonly considered to be ‘intact rock’. When sampling ‘intact’ pieces of core from drillholes crossing blocks of rock bound by block forming discontinuities, samples will be ‘intact’ but some samples will be veined, others will be damaged, and others will be neither. According to Hoek (1983), intact rock pieces are “the unfractured blocks occurring between structural discontinuities in a typical rock mass” and the sci parameter for intact rock is determined using the fitting procedure proposed by Hoek and Brown (1997) based on the data requirements outlined by Hoek (1983). Studies (e.g., Bewick and Kaiser 2014; Kaiser and Kim 2014) have shown that independently determined UCS and sci values for the same rock type are not equivalent. Thus, UCS data cannot be used as a replacement for sci."

BauxsolTM, prepared by treating bauxite refinery residues with Mg2+ and Ca2+, has an excellent ability to remove arsenic from acidic waters. The addition of BauxsolTM to sulphidic waste rock at the Gilt Edge Mine, South Dakota, reduced As concentrations in leachate water from 35 mg/L to < 0.005 mg/L; the concentrations have remained below 0.005 mg/L for the five years since the treatment was initiated. However, ordinary BauxsolTM does not effectively remove As from near-neutral water and it needs to be acid-treated or blended with small amounts of reagents, such as jarosite or ferrous sulphate, to increase the proportion of positively charged binding sites on the particles. The use of a jarosite/BauxsolTM blend can effectively treat ponded water, and As(V) concentrations can easily be reduced from over 1 mg/L to < 0.001 mg/L; As(III) has to be oxidised to As(V) for effective removal. Metal contaminants in the jarosite are trapped by the BauxsolTM and only very small amounts of the As, or other elements bound during treatment, are liberated using a TCLP leaching test. The exhausted treatment reagents meet the criteria for classification as an inert solid and do not need to be disposed of in a secure repository.

"The Chibougamau Explorers property comprises 35 claims or 1,726 acres in La Dauversiere and Rohault Townships along the west shore of Norhart Lake. The property is serviced by a twelve-mile all-weather high-way leaving the main St. Felicien-Chibougamau highway at mileage 121. This road junction will be a railway siding on the C.N.R. St. Felicien-Chibougamau branch line in early 1957. The property lies 30 miles due south from the town of Chibougamau. The mine-sponsored Chibougamau Explorers town has a population of 250 with 28 residences and a well equipped recreation centre.The original showing was found by Rider Storn, a prospector financed by Val d'Or interests during the 1950 field season. This showing did not stand up to detailed prospecting but it did lead to the discovery of the main zone by A. Oakley during the following winter.The company was incorporated in I 950 under the presidency of E. Ayrhart. Financing following the initial drilling involved an increase of capitalization from 3 to 5 million shares and the advent of financing and management control by Anacon Lead Mines Limited.Exploration and development to Jan. I, 1956, has included 42,331 feet of surface diamond drilling; 31,363 feet of underground drilling; a 3-compartment shaft to 1,245 feet, with 8 levels at 150-foot intervals; and I 1,054 feet of drifts, crosscuts, and raises. Ore reserves to the 900-foot level, proven and partly developed, total 546,725 tons averaging 0·30 ounces gold and 0·93 per cent copper. SEPARATION of the oil from the bituminons sands of the Athabaska area of Alberta has been a subject of study by the Research Council of Alberta. The results of the study have been published in the Annual Reports of the Council. However, the last Annual Report in which there is mention of bituminons sand separation is that for 1934. The attention that is being directed toward the bituminons sands at the present time calls for an up-to-date summary of the work of the Research Council of Alberta on the hot-water separation process. STATEMENT OF FUNDAMENTALS OF HOT-WATER PROCESS Studies of the hot-water separation process have been largely empirical in nature. The objective sought has been a complete recovery of oil from the sand in the form of a separated oil which, itself, is free from mineral matter. Various procedures have been tried in the hope of attaining this objective and a very considerable mass of observations and background of experience have been acquired. lt is rime that a theory for hot-water separation should commence to emerge. As a start toward the formulation of such a theory, the statements which follow regarding the constitution of bituminons sand and its reactions with water and air are presented. It is not pretended that they are entirely correct, but it is believed that they lie not far from the truth. (1) Bituminons sand is an aggregate of sand, clay, oil, and water. The sand consists mainly of quartz particles of 100 ta 200 mesh size and smaller, but also of particles of other minerais including mica, rutile, ilmenite, tour-maline, zircon, spinel, garnet, pyrite, and lignite. Clay occurs interbedded with the bituminons sand, of which, also, it is a constituent. lronstone nodules of all sizes up to eight inches in diameter are likely to be present in the bituminons sand beds. The oil is viscous, naphthenic, and of a specific gravity slightly greater than that of water. The oil content ranges up to, and sometimes even exceeds, 17 per cent by weight. Rich bituminons sand from beds not invaded by water has a water content of 3 to 5 per cent by weight. The water is probably present as a film around the sand particles. The oil surrounds the moist sand grains as an envelope. (2) Water wets quartz and other siliceous minerals more readily than does mineral oil. Consequently, water tends to displace the oil film surrounding the quartz and other siliceous particles when the bituminons sand is mixed with water. Whether the oil is completely displaced depends on the properties of the water. That is to say, the materials dissolved or suspended in the water modify its wetting properties.

Abstract- Since the 1957 initiation of deposition of mill tailings at the Heath Steele mine, New Brunswick, periodic detailed studies of the tailings geochemistry and mineralogy have been con­ ducted, thereby providing a unique opportunity to examine the geochernical evolution of a sulfide- rich mine-tailings impoundment. When deposited, the tailings contained about 85 wt% sulfide minerals, 1 wt% to 3 wt% carbonate minerals, and 12 wt% to 14 wt% aluminosilicate minerals. Mineralogical examination of samples of the tailings from deep in the impoundment indicates that little oxidation occurred prior to tailings deposition. The mill process-water deposited with the tailings was neutral to slightly basic and contained low concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn and As. Sampling of the tailings five years after deposition indicated that sulfide-oxidation reactions, occurring near the tailings surface, had decreased the tailings-water pH and increased the concentrations of Fe, SOi-, Cu, Zn and Pb (up to 10 000 mg/L, 25 000 mg/L, 2.5 mg/L, 200 mg/L, and 4.5 mg/L, respectively) . In 1975, ten years after decommissioning, the tailings could be divided into three zones: an upper oxidation zone in which sulfide oxidation is actively occurring, a hardpan layer, 15 cm to 20 cm thick, composed of tailings cemented by secondary Fe minerals, and an underlying reduction zone in which the tailings are relatively tinoxidized (Boorman and Watson, 1976). Chemical analyses indicated the presence of low-pH waters containing very high concentrations of SO42- , Fe, and other metals (up to 63 600 mg/L SO42-, 28 600 mg/L Fe, 10 mg/L Pb, 600 mg/L Cu and 4000 mg/L Zn), suggesting that there was a period of intense sulfide oxidation between five and ten years after tailings deposition. More recent sampling, conducted some 20 years after the end of tailings deposition, indicates that relatively little change has occurred in the last ten years, thereby suggesting that the hardpan layer has provided an impediment to the downward movement of dissolved constituents . Analyses of the tailings solids show increased accumulations of many metals at or near the depth of the hardpan layer. Evaluations of the long-term evolution of the tailings can be enhanced by comparison of descriptions of the tailings with descriptions of the gossan that overlay the massive­ sulfide orebody prior to mining. At Heath Steele, this comparison suggests that many of the mechanisms controlling the distribution of metals in the tailings will probably persist over geologic time.
