The chief source of metallic iron for steelmaking in India, even today, as it is in most part of the world, is through blast furnace (BF) route. This will continue to be so in the foreseeable future as the technology is most efficient, both process and economy-wise. However, as the world is moving into the next millennium, a critical look is being given to the process primarily because of its non-ecofriendliness (as a result of extensive use of metallurgical coal/coke requiring elaborate pollution control facilities) and huge investment involved for supporting facilities like extensive raw material preparation and handling, agglomeration, adoption of sophisticated instrumentation and control system, etc.

The major copper orebody at Mount Isa is being extracted at a rate of four million tonnes per year. The method used requires an equivalent rate of back filling with (mainly) cemented fill. There were three major incentives for developing this mining system. The first was the prospect of high ultimate recovery of the orebody. The target is 100 per cent recovery. Also the proposed stoping layout appeared to offer significant advantages in development and production costs. Finally, extensive subsidence above the northern end of the orebody could have disturbed permanent surface installations and jeopardised a possible future open cut. The full implications of this ambitious strategy were not apparent in the early years. Now, after 12 years of production the benefits are being realised and they can be weighed against the costs. Probably the most interesting result which comes from this analysis is the significance of cutoff grades and dilution factors in balancing mining and filling rates.

Chemical and isotopic analyses of fumarole gases from Galeras Volcano, Colombia provide significant insights into the origin of volatile components in the magma. Water comprises a mixture of magmatic (rock-equilibrated at high temperature) and meteoric, with the relative proportions varying through time. Carbon isotopes are most consistent with a mantle source, although other contributions to the system cannot be ruled out. Nitrogen most likely originated from organic matter in subducted oceanic sediments. All of these 'primary' components have been modified somewhat by interaction or exchange with other reservoirs during ascent to the surface. In addition to information on the origin of the gases, these data show significant temporal variations precursory to eruptive events. Chemical ratios change and water becomes more meteoric in character prior to eruptions.

DIVERSITY There are plenty of examples to show that diversity has been the fundamental downfall of many organisations, particularly when you consider the international position. What about core business, the return of companies to key competence directions and market focus. The stockmarket for instance defines groups and companies in key groups of core business. The expectation is that companies toe the line and do not diversify across their areas of defined expertise. In essence, the market has given notice that the requirements are to focus and stick to our core business. So what right does the conference have to suggest that diversity is the key to prosperity. Hasn't the organiser read the book, studied the history, listened to the market - obviously not. Have they got it wrong, My feeling and belief is no - the organisers have got it right. However, the matter is not as simple as first perceived. What is Diversity, or Diversification as I would prefer? Is it a product position? Is it a geographic position? Is it an expansion or change in services offered? Does a gold mining company diversify into copper or diamonds or aluminium or nickel? Does a gold miner in Australia diversify into China or Kazakhstan or West Africa? How do the two relate? They don't. A successful company will always possess a 'core competence' not so much a 'core business'. The best example of this is the service company extraordinaire - McDonalds. They don't sell hamburgers or french fries, they sell a service, a convenience, a lifestyle. The core business is hamburgers and if McDonalds were to diversify further into new styles of hamburgers, I suggest to you they would fail. But if McDonalds were to diversify into other products based on their 'core competence', provision of service, then I would suggest to you they would be very successful. Cadmium occurs in the Broken Hill Lode essentially as a camouflaged element, substituting diadochically for zinc in the sphalerite.Analyses of a series of zinc concentrate flotation products, prepared from samples of ore taken at intervals throughout the developed lengths of the several orebodies forming the lode, have revealed a pattern in the distribution of cadmium relative to zinc. This pattern appears to reflect the temperature and order of deposition of the several orebodies, and the direction of movement of the mineralizing solutions.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation into the distribution of cadmium in the several orebodies of the Broken Hill lode was undertaken by the Mineragraphic Section. of C.S.I.R.O. in conjunction with the Broken Hill Geological Research Committee, as part of a study of Broken Hill mineralization.It arose from the examination of cadmium and zinc assays supplied by Mr. T. A. Read, Chief Metallurgist of the Broken Hill South Ltd.; of experimental zinc concentrates prepared from localized samples of the No, 2 and No. 3 orebodies in the Broken Hill South Mine. These assays suggested that the two orebodies were characterized by distinctive ZnjCd ratios.In view of the possible sigmficanc'e of such a difference, comparable data were sought from each of the other mines. The necessary samples of ore were collected by the geological staffs of the several mines. An optical computing system was used to determine spacings and frequencies in geological fabrics and engineering joint fabrics.Three-dimensional arrays of joints were plotted on an equal-area net. Directions in which true spacings are seen were determined from these plots. Photographs taken along these directions were used for optical computing.

Flotation tests in a laboratory flotation cell at pH 8-8.5 and other sui}plementary tests were carried out on sphalerite-quartz and sphalerite-pyrite-'quartz mixtures. Depression of sphalerite resulted vvhen the addition of copper sulphate exceeded an optimum value. Evidence that this depression was due to collector deficiency because of reaction between copper sulphate and collector is presented. It was not found possible to devise a direct analytical method suitable for .plant control of reagent addition. A possible means of control using potassium cyanide and a higher pH is discussed.INTRODUCTIONAt the Rosebery mill of Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd., recovery 'of sphalerite in the zinc concentrate occasionally drops unexpectedly. Experiment in the mill and mill laboratory has suggested that one of the factors causing this may be the addition of more than an optimum amount of copper sulphate. On such occasions, an increase in the collector addition improves zinc recovery in the zinc concentrate, but only at the expense of sphalerite-pyrite selectivity.To examine the phenomenon more thoroughly, and if possible to find some means of determining the optimum addition of cepper sulphate and controlling the actual addition at this optimum, one of the authors (W. Two types of low-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation may be recognised in volcanic terranes. Chalcedonic Silica- Adularia-Illite type mineralisation is most common in rhyolitic terranes, whereas Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia- Kaolinite) type mineralisation is more typically formed in andesitic terranes. A third type of epithermal mineralisation, the high sulphidation or Vuggy Silica-Alunite- Kaolinite-Illite type, is also common in andesitic terranes. Episodic violent boiling, accompanying hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions, characteristic of geothermal systems in rhyolitic terranes, is stressed for the formation of Chalcedonic Silica mineralisation. Such boiling of deeply circulating meteoric groundwater, with some magmatic fluid contribution, provides chalcedonic veining, episodic banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S from the fluid to cause major gold deposition. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably caused by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwater with ascending deep geothermal fluids beneath andesitic strato- volcanoes. The cooling effect, oxidation, and increased acidity, overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of metals. Extensive formation of base-metal sulphides further enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling is restricted to local structural dilation sites, potentially producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

At an early stage of the examination of most prospects, samples are taken; and the sample values obtained play an important part in determining the subsequent history of the prospect. It is, therefore, important that. eveJJy effort should be made to interpret asfully as possible the meaning of the observed results. In this connection, it is suggested that examination of the assay values of mine samples by simple statistical methods may bring to light information of considerable value, which might otherwise be missed.Although expert statisticians may derive more information from the available data, those who are, like the writer, less proficient mathematically, may also benefit by applying quite simple statistical methods. At least they will develop a useful habit of thought bywhich they become aware at all times that sampling results only provide estimates of the truth, but that an assessment of the precision of such results may be possible. The object of this paper is to provide some evidence of. the truth of these statements, by theuse of a few very elementary statistical calculations.General.The idea that any mine sample is subject to error from a variety of causes is a very familiar one. Doubt always exists with regard to the representativeness of a perfectly cut sample, and other errors may arise through imperfections of sample cutting, crushing, splitting and assaying. Some causes of error may give rise to "constant" errors, others may cause variable but one-sided "systematic" errors, and others again may bring about variable results without any tendency toward bias on the average. In statistical language, mine sample values are subject to errors which may have either assignable causes or chance causes. The former are those which can be isolated, or should be capable of isolation, while the latter are those remaining when all assignable causes have been removed. A single constant assignable cause brings about bias in all results, and one or more than one variable assignable cause brings about variation between individual results and perhaps an overall bias. The system of chance causes that would remain if all assignable causes were removed would cause variation between individual results but no overall bias. For the past 120 years, Portland cement manufacture has been undertaken on the shores of the Whangarei Harbour in northern New Zealand. Through a serendipitous conjunction of geo-chemistry, the argillaceous marl found on Limestone Island in the harbour and Tikorangi Hill provides a perfect mix of the various elements required for strong and durable cement. Golden Bay Cement, and its predecessors, have been the guardians and managers of the use of these minerals. As the demands of the concrete industry have increased, so have the needs of the manufacturing process. Careful mapping of the resource at both Portland and Wilsonville Quarries has been undertaken. This has allowed the Company to change the Quarry operation from a purely volume basis to one of selection and blending of constituent minerals. Within the manufacturing process, change has also been introduced. Analytical techniques, using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, microscopy and the application of modem data collation, has allowed fine tuning of the process. The Company now produces an increasing diverse range of products for both the domestic New Zealand market and exports to various South Pacific countries. This paper discusses the processing of limestone and æcement rockÆ into cement clinker, an intermediate synthetic mineral ground into cement. It examines control and blending regimes, and some methods used in determining process efficiency. An important technique ærediscoveredÆ has been the application of microscopy to clinker.  Examination of the major silicate minerals enables interpretation of the kiln processing and feedback to process operators. It also enables a prediction of indicated performance when ground into cement. Examples this paper give an insight into the use of minerals from Northland in some of the more important construction projects in modem New Zealand.

Most epithermal Au-Ag deposits in the Hauraki Goldfield are hosted in late Miocene andesites. Broken Hills is an exception, being one of the few economic deposits hosted in rhyolite. Investigation of Broken Hills provides the opportunity to collate structural data that may be compared with that collected from andesite-hosted deposits in order to evaluate the importance of rock type on vein development. The rhyolite host rock at Broken Hills is strongly flow-banded, but this anisotropy does not appear to affect the orientation of mineralised structures. There is a range of structures at Broken Hills: veins, faults, fractures, and large breccia pipes. Veins generally strike north-south, with localised changes in strike and thickness. Slip vectors determined from striations indicate near pure dipslip on the main lode, indicating an extensional tectonic setting. The orientations of vein deflections are parallel to slip vectors. This correlation is common in modern extensional fault arrays where fault growth and linkage produces subvertical deflections in fault orientation (eg TVZ). There are three main types of breccias: 1. Primary breccias related to rhyolite emplacement. 2. Jigsaw type secondary breccias that are that developed during the life of the hydrothermal system. 3. Breccia pipes. Broken Hills was a dynamic epithermal mineralising system.

This investigation was planned to determine:1. The precipitation-hardening properties of the copper-nickel-phosphorus alloys; and2. The influence of arsenic and bismuth, singly and together, on the mechanical properties of these alloys.It was carried out in conjunction with an investigation, previously published in these Prooeedings on "The Influence of Various Elements on the Mechanical Properties of Copper containing a small percentage of Bismuth," and also formed part of a study of the influence of bismuth, nickel and phosphorus on the properties of commercial arsenical-copper.The first part of the present investigation arose out of a discovery some years ago of precipitation-hardening in phosphorus-deoxidized coppernickel boiler tubes, containing approximately 2% nickel and 0·03% phosphorus, supplied to an Australian Railways Department. At that time there was little information available on precipitation-hardening in copperrich copper-nickel-phosphorus alloys, but at the end of 1935 a short paper on the subject was published by E. C. Rollason and T. G. Bamford(2) and at the beginning of 1940 a comprehensive account was published by D. K. Crampton, H. L. Burghoff and J. T. Stacy.(3) Although the investigation carried, out independently by the present author was not as comprehensive as that of Crampton, Burghoff and Stacy, the results are in agreement with those of the American as well as of the British authors; hence, only a summary of this aspect of the work is needed here to establish a basis for a study of the influence of bismuth and arsenic.PREPARATION OF TEST PIECESAll alloys were melted under charcoal in plumbago crucibles in an oil-fired furnace and were poured out of contact with air into oil-dressed moulds to give billets either 7· 5 in. long X 0.83 in. diam. X 1·3 lb. weight or 12 in. long X 1·125 in. diam. X 3·3 lb. weight depending on requirements (the larger size was used, for example, in establishing the annealing characteristics of the precipitation-hardening alloys). The raw materials were electrolytic copper of the composition described in the previous paper(I) 6% copper-arsenic, 14% copper-phosphorus, 1:7% copper-bismuth, and Mond nickel in the form of "shot." The method of producing test pieces from these billets and the annealing treatments ana tests to which the pieces were subjected have been described in the previous paper.

The first steps for in situ resource utilisation (ISRU) on target bodies such as the Moon, Mars and near-Earth asteroids (NEA), and even comets, involve the same sequence of steps as in the terrestrial mining of resources. First exploration including prospecting must occur, and then the resource must be acquired through excavation methods if it is of value. Subsequently a load-haul-dump sequence of events occurs, followed by processing of the resource in an ISRU plant, to produce useful commodities.While these technologies and related supporting operations are mature in terrestrial applications, they will be different in space since the environment and indigenous materials are different than on Earth. In addition, the equipment must be highly automated, since for the majority of the production cycle time, there will be no humans present to assist or intervene. This space mining equipment must withstand a harsh environment which includes vacuum, radical temperature swing cycles, highly abrasive lofted dust, electrostatic effects, van der Waals forces effects, galactic cosmic radiation, solar particle events, high thermal gradients when spanning sunlight terminators, steep slopes into craters / lava tubes and cryogenic temperatures as low as 40 K in permanently shadowed regions. In addition the equipment must be tele-operated from Earth or a local base where the crew is sheltered. If the tele-operation occurs from Earth then significant communications latency effects mandate the use of autonomous control systems in the mining equipment. While this is an extremely challenging engineering design scenario, it is also an opportunity, since the technologies developed in this endeavour could be used in the next generations of terrestrial mining equipment, in order to mine deeper, safer, more economical and with a higher degree of flexibility. New space technologies could precipitate new mining solutions here on Earth.The NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Swamp Works is an innovation environment and methodology, with associated laboratories that use lean development methods and creativity-enhancing processes to invent and develop new solutions for space exploration. This paper will discuss the Swamp Works approach to developing space mining and resource extraction systems and the vision of space development it serves. The ultimate goal of the Swamp Works is to expand human civilisation into the solar system via the use of local resources utilisation. Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. The briquettes were supplied from the· normal production of the Yallourn briquette factory and the 2t in. I-type briquette was the largest size which the plant could handle.This carbonization plant represents the intermediate stage of development between the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne and the commercial production of hard char as a metallurgical fuel. The main orebody of the Bodangora mine is a metalliferous quartz reef within a major fault plane in the strongly folded and faulted volcanic rocks of the Ordovician-Silurian Oakdale Formation. The similarity of the type of mineralization to that of other pyrometasomatic deposits in this area suggests that the mineralizing fluids originated in the nearby Wuuluman Granite.The associated Mitchell's Creek West or Dick's reef is discussed briefly.

The Otago Schist is crossed by numerous deformation zones that formed in the latter stages of metamorphism and uplift of the metamorphic belt. These deformation zones are long (tens of km) linear features at the regional scale, and are generally narrow (km scale or less). Many of these structural zones separate schist domains with different rock types and structural/metamorphic histories. The Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone is one such deformation zone, and this zone hosts the active Macraes gold mine. The Rise & Shine Shear Zone, 80 km NW of Macraes, is also enriched in gold and has been mined historically. Mineralisation in both these shear zones occurred during the transition from ductile to brittle deformation as the schist belt was uplifted from greenschist facies metamorphic conditions. Recrystallisation of quartz and micas in the early stages was overprinted by cataclasis, with sulfide and gold precipitation throughout. Many of the other late metamorphic deformation zones formed under similar greenschist to sub-greenschist facies conditions, with similar overprinting of recrystallisation textures and folds by more brittle textures such as breccias. Under these conditions, originally regionally pervasive deformation at the highest metamorphic grades was evolving towards more focussed high strain zones at lower temperatures and pressures. Shear zones initially focussed fluid flow along microshears and mineral grain boundaries, resulting in 1 to 100 m scale alteration and replacement in the host schist, with only local development of quartz veins. Fluid flow was not controlled by open fractures, and the rate of fluid movement was probably slow and pervasive. After uplift into the brittle regime, the schist belt underwent tectonic extension. Extension was accompanied by development of swarms of steeply dipping veins, with localised mineralised normal faults. Hydrothermal fluid flow throughout this uplift history was a normal consequence of late stage devolatilisation of the metamorphic belt. Hence, all late metamorphic deformation zones should be considered prospective for gold accumulation.

In the Ngakuru area zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lacustrine vitric tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation and two of the deposits are being mined. The Ngakuru Formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 240 ka, and is overlain by younger alluvial sands and gravels. Individual zeolite deposits contain 50 - 80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified vitric tuffs and are localised along NE-trending normal faults. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, Kfeldspar and smectite are also present. The zeolites and other minerals are very fine grained (<10 8m), with open meshes of crystals that result in high porosities (52 - 70 per cent) in mordenite-rich tuffs. Zeolitic tuff samples typically have cation exchange capacities of 80 to 110 meq/100 g and internal surface areas of 25 - 58 m2/g, which combine to give high liquid and odour absorption capacities. The first zeolite deposit (Mangatete) was found in 1992, and this and the Twist Road deposit are worked by quarry benching into the side of hills. The zeolitic tuffs are dried and crushed to produce a variety of products including adsorbents for soaking up oil/chemical spills and animal wastes, animal feed supplements, water treatment, and sports turf and slow release fertiliser. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits formed at shallow depth (<100 m) along fault zones from reaction of glass-rich tuff beds with groundwater-diluted geothermal water during the late Quaternary, and are as young as 8500 yr BP from 14C dating of plant material in sinter associated with the Mangatete deposit.

Our ultimate resources come from the Sun and the Earth System. At this time we face a world crisis in energy, water and soil resources. Global pollution problems are increasing in almost all nations. There is an urgent need to use our vast knowledge with a new wisdom and this requires new integrated teams of experts to provide the best alternatives for the needed new development problems. These teams must include economists, engineers and a broad spectrum of scientists. Today it is possible to produce clean energy, stop soil erosion, clean water and reduce and use wastes of many types.   There is a great need to improve science, natural science, education at all levels. All people must know how our planet works and that fluctuations, some inevitable, some controllable, are inevitable and that we must prepare for them. And it is clear that protecting the environment, eliminating pollution, preserving bio diversity is good economics. Ecology Economy cannot be separated.
