The behaviour of coal in a process is a function of both the coal properties and the processing conditions. In the case of the Loy Yang coal deposit, extensive testing has been undertaken to determine: ò the extent, distribution and structure of the coal resource; ò the variations in properties throughout the resource; and ò evaluation of the behaviour of the coal during processing. This has involved the conduct of an extensive borehole drilling program, backed by geological modelling and material characterisation (chemical, physico-chemical and petrological). Evaluation of the behaviour of the coal during processing has ranged from theoretical modelling, laboratory-scale investigations through to pilot scale and full-scale tests. Until recently, the bulk of the work was directed at evaluating the behaviour of the coal for existing pulverised fuel (pf) firing/steam boiler technology and a high level of understanding has been developed of both the coal resource and its behaviour within these systems. More recent efforts have been directed towards the evaluation of new technologies directed towards cheaper and more efficient power generation using this coal. Loy Yang coal has been evaluated in the following technologies: ò Hydrothermal dewatering/direct coal-fired gas turbine; ò Steam fluidised bed drying; ò Solar drying/densification; ò Briquetting; and ò Gasification.

Results of laboratory studies on the flotation of marmatite (zinc sulphide) with new reagents, which were developed to avoid the use of copper sulphate, are presented.Episulphides were chosen as the basis for the reagents because of their reported special chemical affinity for zinc and cadmium. Attempts were made to solubilize and introduce functional groups to episulphides with organic and inorganic acids, ammonia, phenol, aniline, diethylamine, and pyridine. As a class of reagents, the episulphide-amine combination was generally found effective in zinc sulphide flotation to a greater or lesser degree. Best results were obtained with ethylene sulphide-aniline combination. Although anilino-ethyl mercaptan is the reported reaction product of aniline and ethylene sulphide, it was concluded that the effective zinc sulphide flotation with ethylene sulphide-aniline combination is not entirely due to the formation of the mercaptan.The economics of the possible usage of ethylene sulphide-aniline reagent are discussed.

The changes in layout and design over 48 years, from the first crushing and shiploading plant installed at Whyalla in 1915, up to the present plant being built at Koolan Island, Yampi Sound may be summarized as follows.1. Smaller motors and lower power consumption have resulted froma. oil lubrication, where practicable, in place of grease,b. a high pressure "oil-lift" device to reduce starting torque in crushers with white metal bearings, andc. roller bearings in place of white metal.2. Short centre drives with pivot-based motors permit controlled loads on bearings and a reduction in size of crusher houses and motor rooms.3. Dust proofing and pressurising of crusher houses and motor rooms reduces working temperatures and improves cleanliness.4. Variable speed pan feeders give improved plant control, with the use of one man only, and remove the need for large surge bins between crushing stages.5. The use of diesel quarry trucks to dump ore through a "drive over"tip results in faster truck cycles.6. Elevated cylindrical silos with air operated chutes, replace long horizontal storage bins with multiple manually operated side discharge chutes for loading rail cars, and give faster and more accurate truck loading. The silos are charged by belt conveyors with automatic distributors.7. Increased shipping bin capacity (40,000 tons at Whyalla and 6O,OOO tons being built at Koolan Island) caters for the bigger vessels now in use and envisaged for the future. Automatic travelling distributors deliver ore to the bins in layers to ensure, maximum mixing and a more uniform grade for blast furnaces.INTRODUCTIONThe Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd has six major crushing plants in Australia at its principal sources of raw material. These are at Iron Knob bench G, Iron Knob scree ore plant, Iron Baron, and Cockatoo Island, all of which are ironstone operations. The other two plants are at Rapid Bay, a limestone quarry, and at Ardrossan, which is the Company's only source of dolomite.

THIS has been a much-neglected branch of engineering. With the majority of industries labour is the chief item of trouble and expense. Anything that will reduce trouble and increase efficiency is well worth considering. It is only of recent years that any attempt has been made on a scientific basis to improve conditions sporadic attempts having been made from time to time, privately and by law. Some have been successful, others unsuccessful not necessarily the fault of those who initiated the ideas, though naturally mistakes were made in some cases for want of experience, but those whom it was desired to benefit were not always prepared for the change, and by their distrust hampered schemes instead of assisting them.Man power is generally more expensive than machinery, though there are exceptions, such as when a small amount of work has to be done in a place where machinery does not exist, and it would not pay to instal any or where labour is cheap, and skilled workmen are scarce as in some tropical countries. When machinery is first introduced it generally causes the suspicion that it will deprive men of their work. It may cause men to vary the conditions of their work, and in some individual cases, when men are unable to conform to changed circumstances it may result in a certain amount of hardship; but, after all, the less competent must not hold back progress for the general good. Besides, changes as a rule do not take place suddenly, so old hands can generally find work at their particular calling 'till nature requires them to retire. This paper presents a resume of the likely profitable mining areas in New Zealand. It covers the main 'minerals' û gold, coal, oil and gas, ironsands, silica sands, clays, lump silica, perlite, sulphur and limestone. The potential mining projects are depicted on a map of New Zealand together with the associated works involved in hydro-electric and geothermal power development requirement for industries such as aluminium, nickel ferro-silicon or silicon carbide production. The political need for mining development to relieve unemployment and reverse emigration is stressed. A case is made for exploration and development assistance by government in labour re-training, energy supply and transportation, if the tremendous losses through lack of use of human and industrial resources are to be rapidly reduced. These losses are currently estimated at $10 000 000 000 per year. The need for protection of the sanctity of contract and security of tenure of all mining operations is touched on briefly as is the need for a reasonably balanced view on conservation. However, as both of these are more properly covered in papers on the legal and environmental aspects of the mining climate, they are presented here only as they affect the economy of the mining operation. Finally, there is a brief comment on the mining climate in New Zealand relative to Australia and South Pacific mining operations.

The combustible volatile matter in coal mine roadway dusts (CVM) has been determined using x-ray backscatter techniques. The correlation between x-ray and chemical techniques is reasonably good for the 92 samples from collieries on the Bulli seam, and the maximum error expected at the maximum level of 11· 5 weight per cent CVM permitted in the N.S.W. Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended, is about ± 2·5 weight per cent. This x-ray technique can be used only when the combustible volatile content of the coal matter (cvm) varies within a limited range, and a separate calibration is required for each coal seam.Portable equipment based on a radioisotope x-ray source ahd digital ratemeter makes possible simple and rapid analysis, and with adaptation to use in coal mines should lead to much more comprehensive testing- ofroadways and hence improved overall prevention of coal dust explosions.

The ultraviolet spectrum of isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate (the principal constituent of Dow flotation collector Z-200) in water and of Z-200 itself in water was found to have an absorption peak at 242 nanometers(nm). The height of this peak was found to be directly proportional to isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate concentrations up to 15 p.p.m. Z-200 contains about 90 per cent isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate and the heightof the peak was proportionately lower, but obeyed the straight line relationship up to 15 p.p.m. This showed the potential value of spectrophotometric measurements for the determination of Z-200 residuals in flotation liquors.Methyl ethyldithiocarbamate (an impurity in Z-200) increased the peak height slightly, but other impurities in Z-200, xanthates, and most inorganic salts present in flotation liquors do not interfere. However nitrate ion and thiosulphate ion have absorption peaks which overlap the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate peak.The simplest general method to overcome this effect is to extract the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate into cyclohexane and to measure the absorbance of the extract.The maximum absorbance of the cydohexane extract was at 247 nm and the peak height at this wavelength was found to be directly proportional to the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate or Z-200 concentration in the original aqueous solution. An alternative method is to measure the spectrum of the original aqueous solution using the aqueous raffinate from extraction as a reference solution. This gives the spectrum due to isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate alone and measurement of the absorbance at 242 nm gives the concentration in the original aqueous solution. Both methods give the same value for the concentration of isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate in the original solution.

A zinc-lead-iron sulphide concentrate from McArthur River can be leached at atmospheric pressure in aqueous solutions with HCI, FeCl3, CuCI2, HCl/02 HC1/02/ CuCI2, Cl2, and CI2/CuCI2 to extract >98 per cent zinc, >90 per cent silver, and <15 per cent iron in 1-7 h at 95°. Galena is more reactive than sphalerite and is converted to lead chloride. Except for leaching with HCI, elemental sulphur is the the main by-product of the leach with little or no sulphate ion detected. The rates and products of these reactions are compared. It is recommended that aqueous slurries of the concentrate (50 per cent w/v) are leached at atmospheric pressure with Cl2 in the presence of copper(II) chloride, which accelerates the extraction of zinc. Hydrochloric acid is a by-product which is consumed bYJeaction with fresh concentrate in air at 60°. Copper is subsequently stripped from the leach solution and recycled by reaction with fresh concentrate at 100°. The separation, recovery, and electrolysis of zinc and lead chloride is outlined since this process would produce Cl2 gas which can be recycled and used directly in the leaching stage.

In dealing with the pulverization and treatment of auriferous ores, it may be stated that there is not one system of treatment applicable to all classes. In the southern portion of New Zealand the ores generally contain free gold, with scarcely any impurity that is, it is found in an almost pure state, without any alloy, and its dissemination amongst the matrix is generally in tolerably coarse particles. The only difficulties the mill man has to contend with, are the economical concentration of pyrites, which in some of the lodes are rich in gold, and the extraction of the gold the pyrites contain. In some of the lodes there is what may be termed float gold, that is, the particles of the precious metal are so finely divided that it passes over the quicksilver tables, and, unless there are other appliances for saving it, this class of gold is entirely lost.Indeed it is only within the last five years that any attention has been given, in the southern portion of the colony, to saving the fine gold that has passed the amalgamating tables. In the North Island the ores are very complex there are scarcely two mines, although they may be adjoining each other, where the bullion is of the same character. On every field the gold is alloyed with silver', and in combination with other metals and mineral substances, such as copper, zinc, antimony, galenfl, iron, sulphur, arsenic, etc., and, in some instaaces, cinnabar, as in the case of the Champion lode at Tui Creek, Te Aroha. Ores of this class are extremly difficult to treat satisfactorily.

This paper focuses on two sites in the Mount Pleasant - McCormacks Bay area of Christchurch where residential development has taken place either within or immediately adjacent to former quarries for the extraction of volcanic rock. At the Quarry Road site less overburden was dumped on adjoining land around the turn of the century, and c.1980 dwelling and related construction took place on approximately 6 m of relatively loose fill material without the recognition of its presence or geotechnical characteristics. Subsequent settlements led to abandonment of a swimming pool and the underpinning of the 3-storey architect-designed house, whilst litigation brought by the owner resulted in findings of negligence against both the architects and engineers. At the Tramways Quarry site the Council approved subdivision of the former quarry area in the early 1980s without requiring any geotechnical evaluation of batter stability or related issues. During development it became apparent that significant blast damage had occurred to rock faces, necessitating a variety of remedial measures, and that waste materials had been dumped down faces without regard to long-term stability. Both case studies confirm the requirement for careful documentation of former quarry sites by territorial local authorities as part of their administrative function, and for detailed engineering geology and geotechnical evaluation of such areas prior to any residential use of the land.

The rapid advance in the adaptation of scientific knowledge to the treatment of ores, resulting in improved chemical and metallurgical processes, has enormously increased the possibility of working lodes profitably, which a few years ago were passed over as unpayable. By the discovery of chlorination, and later of "Cyanidation," by the highly improved methods of concentration, and by the rapid advance in our knowledge of smelting (for which we are greatly indebted to Americanmetallurgists), and by the gradual replacement of scientifing principles and enlightened management, for rule-of-thumb methods formerly in vogue, many large low grade bodies have been opened, and are now paying dividends, which were,twenty years ago, looked upon as hopelessly unpayable. It has been more especially in these large low grade ore bodies, that modern methods have been benefical; for small lodes must be rich to pay at all, as they cannot be worked on the same gigantic scale, but even in these a percentage of metal is saved which formerly was absolutely lost.To make these large deposits remunerative it is, however necessary to try and find the point of greatest economic advantage, to handle the ore in vast quantities, to erect huge plats to treat it, to substitute automatic appliances for hand labour as far as possible, and to combine several processes supplementary to one another, so that ore which is not amenable to one process, shall be saved, by another; and by doing...

The Alpala copper-gold deposit is a recent, high-grade porphyry Cu-Au discovery located in the Imbabura Province of north-western Ecuador. The deposit lies along the crustal-scale Chimbo-Toachi Fault Zone within the Dagua-Piñon terrane, which is an oceanic plateau accreted to the South American convergent margin in the Late Cretaceous. The deposit is hosted by quartz diorite stocks that intrude andesitic volcanic breccias of the Oligocene to mid-Miocene San Juan de Lachas Formation. Miocene-age calc-alkaline plutonism is associated with porphyry Cu, Cu-Mo and Cu-Au deposits in southern and northern Ecuador. The Alpala deposit lies along a sector of the Miocene arc that has recently been underplated by the Carnegie Ridge seamount chain that induced shoaling of the subducted Nazca plate beneath northern Ecuador.Surface expressions of the deposit were recognised in May 2012 during follow-up of stream sediment anomalies, when outcropping sheeted and stockwork porphyry-related veins were discovered in Quebrada Alpala. The roots of a NW-trending, structurally-controlled lithocap were recognised over an area of 4.5 × 0.9 km. The remnant lithocap exhibits well-defined mineral zonation mapped by TerraSpecTM analyses on grid soil samples. Soil sampling, heliborne magnetic surveying and channel sampling defined initial drill targets.Seven diamond drill holes were completed in the year from September 2013. Drill hole CSD-13-005 intersected 672 m grading 0.93 per cent Cu and 0.91 g/t Au in high-temperature, inner propylitic and locally potassic-altered quartz diorite intrusions. Overlying hydrothermal clay alteration assemblages define the base of the lithocap. A NW–SE trending footwall structure defines the south-west margin of the deposit. Drill hole 5 intersected high-grade sheeted ‘B-type’ and ‘C-type’ veins (Gustafson and Hunt, 1975) that lie along the south-west margin of an 1100 × 500 m magnetic anomaly that is the focus of ongoing exploration.CITATION:Rohrlach, B, Poma, O, Rosero, B, Silva, J and Ward, J, 2015. The Physiographical Features of the Region The Middleback; Range proper, from the Iron Duke in the south to the Iron Prince in the north, extends in a meridional direction for 21 miles, but may well be taken to embrace also the Iron Knob and Iron Monarch prominences so that the total length of the Range is 37 miles.Although no great altitudes are reached, the slopes of the high country are steep and the Range stands out prominently above the peneplaned surface of upper Eyre Peninsula. The Range is built up of sub-parallel ridges at some places, and its continuity is interrupted by transverse breaks or gaps resulting from normal stream erosion and corrosion during earlier periods when precipitation was heavier and streams were more active. Traces of high-level gravels remain on the flanks of Kimba Gap. A former mature stream on the western side of the Range has had its lower reaches blocked by sand and the old stream channel has been converted into an eiongated basin of internal drainage. The sand dunes in this area appear to be practically stationary at present, being fixed by mallee vegetation. Their trend is west-northwest.The relief of the Range is regarded as having been determined primarily by meridional strike faulting and selective silification of some of the beds. A table concentrate obtained experimentally by the New Occidental Gold Mines N.L. has unusual interest on account of the presence in it of abundant coated or "black" gold. The concentrate was obtained from ore from the New Cobar mine, Cobar, New South Wales, by feeding the oversize product from a "Dorr Bowl classifier to a Card table.Its assay value was 129 oz. of gold and 52 oz. of silver per ton, yet practically no free gold could be seen on panning.When, however, the concentrate was digested in hydrochloric acid fine rusty gold could be obtained by panning.The following chemical analysis was carried out by the mining company on a similar sample of concentrate.

The influence of feed size and pulp density on the specific rate ofbreakage of quartz was investigated. Plots of log fraction of feedremaining within the feed size interval against grinding time allowed the application of the first order grinding model to be examined. Substantial non-linearities were observed for all feed sizes due to environmental and material factors. For feed sizes above 1.3 mm, the specific rate of quartz breakage was higher with rod milling than ball milling, but below this size the reverse was true. Material that remained in the feed size interval after the initial grinding broke more slowly in subsequent grinding than the original feed material. Grinding media and time as well as feed size influenced the effects of pulp density on grinding. More dilute pulps (eg 50 per cent solids density by weight) were favoured for higher rates of breakage in rod milling but for ball milling, the optimum pulp density appeared to be 60 to 70 per cent solids by weight.

Ore samples generally require preparation before analysis. Serious problems can occur with contamination degradation and particle size effects. Both grinding element contammation and sample cross contamination havebeen bound to be related to sample hardness and operator technique. For best results with minerals relevant to the steel industry, the use of Siebtechnik-type mills required a combination of careful planning, short grinding periods and intermediate sieving of the sample. The results may be extended to most mineral, rock, and refractory sample preparabons.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Otago Schist belt of southern New Zealand hosts widespread orogenic gold deposits. Erosion of these orogenic gold deposits has led to the formation of numerous placer deposits distributed across and beyond the host schist belt. Numerical modelling of crustal scale deformation and geomorphic evolution has defined the key tectonic features that have controlled the severance of detrital gold deposits from their sources. Tectonic activity over the past 20 million years, during development of the modern Pacific-Australian plate boundary, has severed links between some placers and their sources. Detrital gold was transported south from the Otago Schist source region in two different river systems in the Miocene. Mesozoic orogenic gold deposits shed gold into rivers that flowed to the south. These rivers were terminated by the rise of north-west-trending basement ridges at the boundary between weak schist crust and strong greywacke crust, and the ridges were controlled by pre-existing faults at that rheological boundary. In contrast, rising mountains close to the developing plate boundary in the Miocene were the locus of new orogenic gold deposits hosted in extensional faults. These gold deposits were rapidly exhumed and contributed detrital gold to orogen-parallel Miocene rivers that flowed to the south-west. Pleistocene deformation on mainly north-west and north-east orientations, and associated river capture, has severed the links between these Miocene orogenic deposits and downstream detrital gold.CITATION:Craw, D and Upton, P, 2015. Water rights and availability are extremely contentious issues in many mining regions around the world, in some instances leading to violent confrontation. This situation has the potential to only get worse because competition for 'scarce' water resources will increase with population growth. In this environment the dilemma facing the mining industry is how to generate confidence in developing a responsible, sustainable and transparent water management strategy that is recognised as such by all stakeholders. Whilst the water needs of the mining industry are minor compared to those of agriculture, an operating mine requires a relatively large quantity of water on a daily basis to carry out operations. Another contentious aspects of new mine development is the debate between all stakeholders on the amount and quality of water that a mine is able to discharge into the environment should this be required. There are a multitude of water resources available to the mining industry for operational needs however much of this water is saline and over the last two decades there has been a continual decline in water quality (ie salinity has increased). In today's world there are enormous internal and external pressures to reduce water consumption at a mine and/or alternatively use water not considered a resource by the local community (ie sewage, saline or salt water, desalinated water). Strategies to meet these objectives can be achieved by implementing good water management practices, by recycling process water, reducing water losses by evaporation and seepage (ie by increasing and improving dewatering practices) and employing new technologies such as dry stacking and dry processing. Recycled water, acid mine drainage water and water collected in the mining area have the potential to impact mineral processing performance, unless they are treated, because of the build up of mineral salts and decomposed chemical products in these types of waters. Besides this the regulatory requirements of any water discharged from a mine site (quantity and quality) have also become more stringent. For these reasons there is now some form of water treatment practiced at most mining operations around the world. This paper provides an overview of water stewardship undertaken in the mining industry over the last two decades and provides examples of water treatment practices that have recently been installed at mining operations that may be of interest to the reader.
