Model experiments were carried out on the mass transfer of iodine between n-hexane and a 4 2 X 10-3 M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The influence of mechanical stirring by means of small gas bubbles (ca. 0.01 ml in volume) on mass transfer was examined in independent experiments. The results were described with the help of the penetration theory and in the case of bubble stirring with the help of a mathematical model based on this theory. S LAG-METAL reactions, especially those in steel-making processes, often occur under conditions where gas is evolved in the form of bubbles that break through the slag-metal interface. It is known that stirring by means of bubbles increases the mass transfer coefficient, but there has been very little quantitative work done in this field. Because of the difficulties that attach to experimental work at high temperatures this study was confined to model experiments at room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS The transport of iodine from an n-hexane layer into a weak sodium hydroxide solution was studied a) with stirring by means of bubbles and b) with mechanical stirring. The apparatus for the experiments with bubbles consisted of the cell, two Dreschel bottles filled with hexane in order to saturate the nitrogen flow, one flow meter, and a nitrogen gas cylinder fitted with a fine-regulating valve. Fig. 1 shows the cell consisting of a glass cylinder 33 cm in height with an overall diameter of 7.5 cm embedded in a copper flange. The flange is connected to a Plexiglas plate and to the gas inlet. The Plexiglas plate has holes of 0.2 mm diam bored into it which are spaced 1 cm from each other. For the experiments with mechanical stirring the bottom of the cell was sealed off by a Plexiglas plate. The upper layer was stirred by means of a glass stir-rer and the bottom layer with the help of a magnetic stirrer in a counter rotatory direction. Both stirrer speeds could be varied continuously. CONCESSION from the Chilean government granting the company use of the Rio Salado water stipulates that a minimum of 35,000 metric tons of such salty water must be diverted from the Salado daily, and be disposed of in a manner not to contaminate the Rio Loa to the east of its confluence with the Rio San Salvador at Chacance, Fig. 1. Consequently, the selection of a suitable site for the sulphide plant tailing disposal had the additional problem of the disposal of excess brackish waters. Studies of the terrain in the area directly to the south of the plant indicated that construction of tailing ponds would be costly, and generally unsatisfactory due to excessive slope of the ground, lack of flanking hills, danger of raising the groundwater level thus causing springs along the Antofagasta-Bolivia railroad; and the possibility of creating a dust nuisance at the plant site or at Calama due to blowing sands. Further to the southwest the San Salvador river canyon offered some possibilities and surveys were made at sites A to D, inclusive, Fig. 1. Here again costly dams would have been necessary to impound the tremendous quantity of tailing produced by the new plant, and provision would have to be made to handle a considerable flow of water through the disposal area to the west of the Rio Opache. Additional surveys were made in the area to the southeast of the plant which brought to light the existence of a natural basin of about 14 1/2 square miles, flanked by low-lying hills, and requiring only the most rudimentary dams to close the outlets at the western end. It has been estimated that the Salar de Talabre, as this basin is called, has the ultimate storage capacity of 1 billion tons of tailing with dam heights of only 60 ft. Pipe Line Layout After the decision had been reached to use the Salar de Talabre for the main disposal area various methods were considered for transporting the tailing from the 300 ft diam thickeners to the disposal site, 17.7 miles away. The first plan was to construct a. concrete launder on a 11 pct grade but a survey of this grade line indicated it would not lead directly into the Salar but would terminate somewhat to the north, and from that point on the slope would be considerably less than 1 pct along a natural watercourse. A slope of 2 pct or even 2 ¼ pct in such a rough watercourse or ditch is the ideal, judging from the success of operations at Cananea. Since a simple ditch is the most economical vehicle for the transportation of tailing, it was decided to use one with a 2 ¼ pct grade for as much of the distance as was possible with the existing terrain and to construct a concrete headbox, or forebay, at the terminus of the ditch to supply a steel pipe line leading the rest of the way into the Salar. Referring to the maps of the Chuquicamata area outlining the tailing disposal system, Figs. 1 and 2, one can trace the flow of the tailing from the thickeners to the Salar as follows: The 8-in. spigot pipes from the thickeners (1) discharge into a concrete sump feeding a concrete launder with a 2 pct slope. The launder carries the tailing into a concrete junction box (2) located south of the sulphide plant. The purpose of the junction box is to provide emergency facilities for diverting the tailing flow from the main disposal area to the emergency area. It also provides a junction point for the launder from the sulphide plant's future east extension. The box is fitted with a pair of radial gates controlling flow into the main tailing ditch (6) or the emergency ditch (3) which terminates on the pampa. All ditches are of the same cross section, namely 4 ft wide at the bottom with 1 : 1 side slopes and with a minimum depth of 21/2 ft. Where the nature of the ground demands it, the ditches are lined with stone rubble. The overflow from the plant's 10 million gal reservoir (4) is led into the main tailing ditch by way of a spillway ditch (5). The main ditch terminates in a trashscreen fitted, concrete forebay (7) which serves as a headbox for a 24 in. O.D. x 3/8 in. wall, Dresser coupled, steel pipe (10) and a 12 in. x 8-gage spiral welded, wedge-lock coupled, steel pipe (8). The forebay is fitted with two compartments, one for each pipe, and flow into each is controlled by radial gates. Each compartment is fitted with a 6-in. drain pipe controlled by a rubber pinch valve. Beginning from the point of view that process control of ore flotation can be approached by on-line analysis of processing behavior, an equation was developed which has characteristics useful for a multi-variable feedback loop. The application of this equation to optimizing control with a data acquisition system will be discussed in Part 11. OBJECTIVE OF CONTROL The purpose of developing a feedback method for concentrator control is to provide a means for determining ore processing behavior in order that data describing the ore can be used to make appropriate changes in control conditions while the ore continues to flow through the flotation circuit. In absence of simple linear relationships between pairs of variables in the flotation process, attention is directed to the need for a generalized relationship which possibly would incorporate all pertinent variables. It would be possible to apply such an equation to the control of variables in a concentrator in real time according to operational requirements as ore gradually changes in quality and processing behavior. To meet this objective, it is necessary to define relationships describing flotation performance in terms of performance variables capable of being measured on-line, either with on-line instruments and analyzers or with manual methods lending themselves to quick determination of meaningful information. Relationships derived to meet this objective form a model for the flotation process. The evaluation of flotation parameters of the ore and the execution of control on the basis of the derived information while the ore is continuing through the process would constitute a feedback control system. Data for the following control and performance variables can be made available: 1) ore feed rate, 2) collector addition rate, 3) lime addition rate, 4) pulp density, 5) assay or multiple assays in feed, tails, or concentrate sufficient for material balancing, 6) particle size distribution in flotation feed, 7) froth height, and 8) frother addition rate. Other process variables, such as flotation air input and mechanical agitation intensity, are usually not considered as control variables and were not taken into account in this analysis. Other data, such as that describing the ore, would be useful for concentrator process control. However, information of this type (such as ore hardness, grain size of the mineral, chemical species of the mineral, and ore surface properties) being not presently measurable in the on-line sense, has the effect of causing disturbances in the system which can be detected only indirectly. The process control system being sought must recognize disturbances by their effect on measured performance followed by determining control changes to compensate for them in meeting the objectives of improved performance (perhaps higher throughput, maximum return, etc.). A suitable model for the process having capability of recognizing the effects of ore disturbances should provide the means for introducing proper compensation through control changes. This would be done by processing on-line data with the model to calculate coefficients reflecting ore characteristics. This procedure can only be applied in a typical flotation system when on-line data can be processed at faster rates than the usual rate at which the ore in flotation feed takes on significantly different characteristics. For example, material balance data can be accumulated in approximately 5-min intervals using on-line X-ray fluorescence analysis. The flotation system time constant might be 15 min including grinding. Ore changes having time constants longer than 1 hr could be accommodated using on-line feedback control by this procedure. FORM OF A FLOTATION MODEL A suitable form for mathematical expression of the flotation process is an equation involving rates, when each of the components entering into the separation can be treated independently by a rate equation. THE {120}(001) texture has been reported in near 50 pct Ni-Fe alloys <0.004 in. thick1,2 and in copper 0.014 in. thick.3 This texture is one of two types of secondary recrystallization textures observed to replace a cube texture matrix and is desirable in Fe-Ni alloys because of its unique magnetic characteristics.1,2 However, the conditions for and mechanism of the {120}(001) formation are not well understood.3 During an investigation of the influence of alloying elements on the magnetic characteristics of 49 pct Ni-Fe alloys with a sheet thickness of 0.014 in., we have observed the growth of {120}(001) secondaries when strong deoxidizers such as aluminum and calcium were present. It is believed that this observation in unique and provides additional insight with regard to the mechanism for {120}(001) texture formation. Three alloys were prepared with electrolytic iron and nickel and contained a nominal 49 wt pct Ni. Alloy A was a straight binary Fe-Ni alloy, whereas intentional additions of 0.013 wt pct Ca to alloy B and of 0.59 wt pct A1 to alloy C were made. Ingots were forged at 1100 C, hot-rolled to 0.150 in. gage, pickled, and cold-rolled to 0.014 in. Standard U-shaped magnetic test specimens were punched, deburred, sprayed with MgO, and annealed in ~50°C dew point hydrogen. Textures were identified with the aid of etch pits, the

Our colleagues cannot in the future earn reputations and medals for achievements in milling and smelting ore and for successful management of mining companies, if some one doesn&apos;t keep finding and mining the ore to mill and smelt and to provide the basis for the good management. Good ore seems sometimes to be quite helpful to good management, and good ore is not as easy to find as it used to be. And there are still more reasons, why—when this honor had been decided upon and named for Mr. Daniel C. Jackling—it should be initially conferred on Reno H. Sales. . The terms of reference of the award are that it should be conferred upon an individual working in the fields of mining, geology, geophysics, who has made an outstanding contribution to the progress of technology in one or more of those fields. And in this initial year (the earlier years are the easiest) just that was done. I think I could get away with it amongst the old-timers of my generation if I say that this time they made the award to the individual, who made the outstanding contribution. But, as Al Smith used to say, "Let&apos;s look at the record." Really, the record is mixed up a little with extra-lateral litigation—the old-time "apex cases" under Section 2322 of the Revised Statutes. Reno Sales doesn&apos;t like such litigation, but there is little question that the urgency, generated by conflicting claims of intra-limital and extra-lateral rights, and consequent necessity for committing to records and maps the complications of Butte structure, did advance—and by several years—the first continuous, accurate, systematic, and scientific portrayal of the geological and mineralogical details of what is, after all, the most important and the most complicated copper district—at least in North America. Prior to Sales&apos; time, some of the most eminent of geologists often waived details. One geologist took the judge to the window to show him the Rarus fault going through a notch in the Continental Divide. The entertaining testimony in the Bluebird litigation was as perfect in literary style as it was innocent of the criteria by which faulting and lack of continuity of vein structure are now recognized. At any rate, this need for an accurate record of structure was in the background—to whatever extent it was, or was not, the etiological agent—for formation of the Geological Department of the Amalgamated Copper Co. in and about the year 1900. Charles W. Goodale was at that time the head of the Boston & Montana, and John D. Ryan succeeded William Scallon as the president of Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in 1905. Horace V. Winchell, for years a specialist in extra-lateral litigation, was perhaps the man who at that date had the vision, the persuasive weight with the management, and the willingness to defend the idea of large current expenditures (as then viewed) for a complete and sys-

IT seems a common opinion among metallographists that all light-gray inclusions seen with the microscope in polished sections of steel are manganese sulphide. Examples of this belief are continually appearing, as for instance in the paper by Dr. Henry Fay on manganese sulphide as a source of danger in steel rails,1 and in Lieutenant-Commander Cook&apos;s paper on Metallography of Steel for U S. The removal of sulfur from steel has been studied by many investigators, but the quantitative relationships between the factors involved have not been determined. This is undoubtedly due to the number of variables encountered in practice, an attempt to study any one reaction or relation being affected by other reactions the relative importance of which cannot be estimated. The factors that affect the extent of removal of sulfur in the basic open-hearth process are generally considered to be: 1. Basicity of the slag: (a) Iron oxides in the slag; (b) carbon in the metal or carbide in the slag; (c) temperature. These factors affect the reactions: FeS + CaO = CaS + FeO FeS + CaO + C = CaS + CO + Fe. 2. Amount of sulfur in the gas. 3. Amount of manganese in the metal. The factors which affect the rate of removal of sulfur include, in addition to these: 4. Fluidity of the slag: (a) Normal changes in fluidity with temperature; (b) changes in fluidity because of the addition of special reagents such as fluorspar. 5. Agitation of the bath. Within the past two years, two papers have been presented dealing with the influence of sulfur in the gas on slag and metal. Nead&apos; has shown that if a gas high in sulfur be used for heating, the metal and slag will absorb sulfur. Whitely2 concluded from his experiments that if a

In a previous paper, Oelsen, Schuermann, and Hey-nertl pointed out the possibility of obtaining complete thermodynamic functions for alloy systems from calorimetric measurements alone. Specifically, if the heat content of a heterogeneous, multicomponent system is known as a function of temperature and composition, then it is possible to derive the heats, entropies, and free energies of formation of liquid phases and of solid intermediate phases of fixed composition. The authors present equations and graphical techniques applicable to eutectic systems and systems with intermediate phases without solid solubility at lower temperatures. eijering has considered possible extension of the treatment to systems with complete solid-state miscibility at lower temperatures; however, experimental difficulties practically restrict the method to systems with very limited miscibility in the solid state. The purpose of this note is to present an alternative derivation of the heats and entropies of formation of liquid phases and of solid intermediate phases from heat-content measurements alone. Fig. 1 shows three types of phase diagram to which the analysis may be applied. If the heat content is determined as a function of composition x, at temperature T, we have quite generally and the heat of mixing of the liquid is obtained directly from heat-content measurements. Beyer Barometric Condenser The Ingersoll-Rand Co. is now offering to the trade complete steam­condensing plants for all service conditions. This equipment includes the Beyer barometric condenser, for&apos; which the company has secured the patent rights, Imperial duplex and Ingersoll-Rogler straight-line reciprocating dry vacuum pumps and, where required, Cameron simplex and centrifugal pumps. The Beyer barometric condenser is of the counter-current type, in which air and cooling water flow in opposite directions. The steam inlet is at the bottom of the condensing v el, the water inlet above and the air-removal opening at the top. The sheets of cooling water over owing the pool at the inlet point meet the entering steam. The two are brought into intimate contact by conical baffle plates which assist the water to absorb to its full capacity the latent heat of the steam. The non-condensable air liberated in the condensing action rises through the falling water to the removal point at the top, being cooled to practically the temperature of the incoming water. A study of the mechanics of shear failure of rock under pressure has been made. The transition from brittle to ductile failure occurs when the friction along the fracture surfaces exceeds the shear strength of the rock. A machine has been developed for measuring both the shear strength of rock and the friction along rock fracture surfaces. In this shear machine, the fractures are forced along definite planes; as a result, the rock is stronger than in compression tests where the fractures choose the weakest paths through the specimens. Friction is composed of several forces: (1) the forces to slide irregulurities on surfaces over each other; (2) forces to shear some of these irregularities; (3) molecular attractions across the fractures; and (4) forces required to break bonds resulting from melting and welding at the tips of irregularities on the surfaces. Friction along rock fracture surfaces is not proportional to contact pressure as usually assumed; instead, it increases as the contact pressure raised to the 0.4 to 0.8 power. INTRODUCTION It is difficult to produce tensile stresses under the high compressive stresses present in the earth; therefore, in deep drilling and geological faulting, shear failure predominates. This shear failure mechanism is complicated because rock is a heterogeneous material containing pore spaces, microfractures, elastic discontinuities and other imperfections. A study of shear failure of rock under pressure has been made to obtain a better understanding of this complex mechanism. A machine has been developed and used to measure the shear strength of rock and friction along sheared surfaces. This machine has certain advantages over the compression test — shear properties can be measured under low normal stresses and shear stress and normal stress can be varied independently. The first part of this paper is a description of shear failure of rock under pressure. The role of shear strength and friction along fracture surfaces in the shear failure mechanism will be discussed. The second part consists of a description of the shear machine and a discussion of the shear strength and friction data obtained using this machine. It will be shown that shear strength depends upon the size of the stressed zone, and that friction does not increase linearly with contact pressure as usually assumed. Attempts are made to relate some of the new concepts to tectonic failure and to dril ling. SHEAR FAILURE IN ROCK TRIAXIAL TESTS The shear failure mechanism is illustrated by the triaxial test shown in Fig. 1. In this test, a cylindrical rock specimen is subjected to a confining pressure, PC, and an axial pressure, pa. These external pressures produce normal a and shear T stresses on inclined planes within the specimen equal to1 where 0 is the angle between the specimen axis and a normal to the inclined plane. In the flotation area, the trend to larger machines continued. Scientific investigation of the modeling and process control of flotation was apparent, as was the research and development of new flotation reagents.

THE o phases have a complex tetragonal structure with Lo/ao = 0.52 and 30 atoms per unit cell.1 A large number of such phases are now known to occur in various binary systems of the transition elements and they exhibit the following typical features: 2,3 The composition of binary o phases is variable, ranging from approximately A4B to ABI. With only a few exceptions, in the o phases the A-ele-ment comes from the V- or Cr- group of the periodic table, while the B-elements are from the Mn-, Fe-, Co-, or Ni- group. In the first long period the corresponding o phases of the V- and Cr-series have approximately the same compositions. However, as the B-element changes from Mn to Fe to Co to Ni, the mean composition shifts monotonously toward higher A-contents.2-4 For example, if the mean compositions of the various o phases with vanadium are compared with each other, the composition shift mentioned above becomes plainly visible: V 30Mn0 80 Vo.45Feo..,, Vo .,Coo. 45 and Vo.5Nio.3. Similiar composition shifts, although not the same composition values, were observed in u phases formed by second and by third long-period transition elements.3&apos;4 This behavior, very characteristic of o phases, is in rather sharp contrast to the usually quite well-behaved stoichi-ometry of the Laves phases. In the latter, the AB2 stoichiometry predominates, with A the large atom and B the small atom.= The p phase occurs in the four binary systems of Mo or W with Fe or Co. On the basis of their crystal structure determination, Arnfelt and westgren6 ascribed to the p phase in the Co-W system the ideal composition W,Co7. Since all four binary pphases have nearly the same composition, it would seem quite plausible that some definite stoichiometry such as A6B7, might be characteristic of this phase, as AB2 is of the Laves phases. On the other hand, it has been noted,7 that the phases occur at average electron concentrations near to those at which the various cr phases are found. Also, it has been pointed out by Shoemaker and associates8 that structurally the a phases and the p phases are somewhat related to each other; both of these structures may be described in terms of suitable stackings of quasi-hexagonal layers&apos;of atoms. By studying a suitably chosen ter- nary phase diagram, one might expect to be able to find out which one of the two conditions, the analogy with the o phase or the constant ratio between the number of large atoms and the number of small atoms in effect governs the behavior of the p phase. Several isothermal sections of ternary systems containing o phases have been investigated. In all cases where two binary o phases occur, these were found to be connected b a more or less straight ternary o phase field.7&apos; &apos;10 Such elongated o phase fields were also found in ternary systems in which only one of the limiting binaries is known to contain o phase. In this manner a latent o forming tendency could be detected and the virtual composition of a "binary o phase", which does not actually occur as such was approximately determined by extrapolation. The behavior of the phases, including their composition shift, is analogous to that of the classical electron compounds, as described by Hume-Rothery.11 In order to decide whether the p phase is essentially a "size compound" like the Laves phases, where a fixed stoichiometric ratio is quite generally maintained between the "large atoms" and the "small atoms", or whether the p phase is typically an "electron compound" in the same sense as ois, it was decided to investigate an isothermal section of the Mo-Mn-Co system. The Mo-Co system12 and the Mo-Mn system13 each are known to have a binary o phase. It could be therefore expected that a ternary o phase field will connect these two binary cr-phase fields. The p phase is known to occur in the Mo-Co system. If the p phase should turn out to form an elongated phase field extending deep into the ternary system, the following considerations mighto apply. The atomic radius of manganese (1.314for C.N.12) is between the va,lues for Mo (1.40Afor C.N.12) and for Co (1.26Afor C.N.12). If it is assumed that p is a "size compound", and that Mn is substituting for the smaller Co atoms in the p-structure in the ternary system, the y-phase field might be expected to extend parallel to the Mn-Co binary line. If Mn is substituting for the large Mo atoms in the p-structure, the p-phase field may be expected to extend parallel to the Mn-Mo binary line. On the other hand, if the p-phase turns out to be an "electron compound" like o, the ternary p-phase field should extend parallel to the ternary o -phase field connecting (Mo,Mn)owith (Mo, Co) a

VAN Arkel 1 prepared ductile tantalum by the thermal decompoiition of tantalum pentachloride on a resistively heated wire (2000° C) in an evacuated bulb maintained at 100°C. Burgers and Basart2&apos;3 observed the formation of a mixture of tantalum carbide and free metal when a carbon deposition base was used. campbel14 suggested the thermal decomposition of the iodide if a lower decomposition tem- perature was desired. To date, the details for preparing high-purity iodide tantalum have not been disclosed. EXPERIMENTAL The tantalum to be purified was symmetrically placed around the clear quartz deposition surface centrally located within a 64 mm cylindrical Vycor bulb. On October 26, 1967, the world&apos;s first long distance iron ore slurry line was put into service by Savage River Mines. The commissioning of this $5 million installation climaxed three years of development, testing, and construction. The mine and concentrator are located approximately 30 miles from the town of Waratah in a rugged semi-mountainous terrain. The open pit mine will produce approximately 5 million long tons a year of crude ore, which is ground in autogenous mills, separated magnetically, thickened and prepared for the pipeline. The 53-mile pipeline transports the 2,250,000 tons of concentrate north to Port Latta. The Port Latta facilities include the receiving, storage and thickening equipment for the slurry as well as filtering, balling and pelletizing equipment to produce the 2,250,000 tons of high grade iron ore pellets. Five vertical shaft furnaces are used for pelletizing.
