"This paper reviews flowsheets generally used in gold rooms to upgrade primary gravity concentrates particularly those of Knelsons. It is concluded that even for small operations, which treat between 250 and lo00 kg of concentrates per day, there is a strong economic incentive to include in the flowsheet magnetic removal of tramp iron, at least two shaking tables, screening of either table feed or table tails at 150-212 um, and scavenging of table tails with a small centrifuge. Headroom, rather than floor space, is often inadequate in most gold room designs, and limits gravity flow and flowsheet flexibility. Experimental data are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of a small Knelson Concentrator to scavenge significant amounts of gold (up to 91 %) from fine table tails.RésuméCet article examine les schémas d’évolution généralement utilisés pour traiter les concentres gravimétriques d‘or, en particulier ceux produits par concentrateur Knelson. Nous en venons à la conclusion que même pour un petit circuit d’une capacité de 250 A 1000 kg/jour pourrait bénéficier des opérations unitaires suivantes : concentrateur magnétique pour extraire la feraille, au moins deux tables A secousses, criblage de l’alimentation ou du rejet d’une ou des tables i une maille de 150-212 um, et épuisages des rejets fins de table avec un centrifuge de petite capacité. C’est l’espace vertical du lieu où se fait cette concentration qui représente la contrainte la plus importante, plutôt que sa surface, puisqu’il faut maximiser l’écoulement par gravite des pulpes et s’offrir une certaine flexibilité quant à l’agencement final des opérations unitaires. "Laboratory investigations on two complex ores, the A1 zone ore from Les Mines Selbaie and the Lyon Lake ore from Mattabi Mines Ltd. (Division of Noranda Minerals), have been carried out to determine some of the main variables in collectorless flotation. In particular, the effect of pulp potential (controlled by gas composition), conditioning time, pH and grinding media have been studied.Chalcopyrite showed the greatest response to collectorless flotation among the four major sulphide minerals present, followed by galena. Flotation of sphalerite was variable from minimal to important depending on the mineralogy and the pre-treatment performed. Appreciable silver recovery was achieved collectorlessly for the Lyon Lake ore while it could not be achieved for the A1 zone ore of Les Mines Selbaie. It appears that the difference between the two ores is related to silver's predominance as tetrahydrite in the Lyon Lake ore while it is as argentite and native silver in the A1 zone ore.The response of the ores to collectorless flotation is strongly dependent on the pulp potential, Ep, and pH. Using different gas compositions and different conditioning times it was found that collectorless flotation occurs when Ep is +195 to +295 mv (vs SHE). The actual on-set potential for collectorless flotation is dependent on the ore. A too high potential or prolonged oxidation leads to a decrease in selectivity. Some other factors were examined, notably the effect of pH and the type of grinding media on the selectivity achieved in the laboratory.Preliminary results from a plant trial at Mattabi Mines Ltd. confirmed that collectorless flotation occurs and that it is preferential for chalcopyrite and to a lesser extent galena. Collectorless flotation was not attempted at Les Mines Selbaie. However, examination of the distribution of collector between the different addition points in the copper circuit suggests that it may be present."

It is the first worke in design of pile foundation to determine the carring capacity of single pile, and a static loading on site is considered to be the lost derect and reliable way. All values P and settlements S induced can be plotted as a broken-line. Since soil is a kind of elasto-plastic and cohesive material, the increasing of settlements is generally greater than that of loads. Different value Pu nay be given by different tester on his P-S diagram, because of erroys in the test and complicated, characteristics of soil. The analytical method of exponential equation shown in this paper derives a specified solution. After using an exponential curve to regress values of loads P and corresponding settlements S from on-site test, coeficients A and B of exponential equation can be obtained. With this curve an ultimate carrying capacity of single pile can be determined. The resistant forces of pile shaft and pile tip can also be defined by the tangent of the calculated knee point, as it is called (tangent method). At last, an example is given to show how the ultimate carrying capacity of f 500mm bored pile is obtained with this method for a project in Kunming.

Different variations of soil nailing techniques have been used in the United States since the late 1970's. Such techniques owe their origins to French developments, which began in the early 1970's as a spin-off from European tunneling excavation support practice. The growing demands of urban infrastructure development and rehabilitation and environmental protection have created an active and expanding soil nailing market demand for earth retention and slope stabilization in the United States since its early developmental years. There is a clear need for a fundamental review of the large number of soil nailing techniques that are currently being used in the United States. Following a brief summary tracing the historical development of soil nailing and a generic classification of applications, this paper provides a review of the different recent advances in the design and construction of soil nailed systems. Discussion topics include nail design advances, permanent "top-down", structure support/underpinning, alternative face stability measures, composite systems, hollow bar and fiberglass nails and architectural reinforced concrete/shotcrete facings. Case histories will be presented to illustrate each of these advances.

The installation of augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles requires careful quality control to assure a successful pile installation. Unlike steel, pre-stressed concrete or other types of driven piles, which are shop fabricated, delivered to the site and typically driven to a minimum tip resistance, augered cast-in-place piles are installed to a pre-determined tip elevation or to a refusal criteria. The structural section of the ACIP pile is constructed during pile installation and cannot be inspected prior to installation. Therefore, a carefully administered quality control program is essential to a pile foundation that will meet or exceed design requirements. This requires an experienced team consisting of the Geotechnical Engineer, Contractor and Inspector. The focus of this paper is to discuss the responsibilities and duties of the ACIP piling Inspector. Qualifications of the Inspector The qualifications of the inspector are related to the complexity and difficulty of the proposed project. Ideally, the Inspector should be an individual with a degree in civil engineering with special emphasis in geotechnical engineering. A properly trained technician with geotechnical engineering experience working under the direct supervision of a geotechnical engineer may be able to provide competent inspection on some projects. It is important that the Inspector have a good understanding of subsurface and ground water conditions and how they will affect pile installation. The Inspector must understand ACIP pile installation procedures and be able to communicate with the Contractor, Structural and Geotechnical Engineers; and maintain a detailed pile record for each installed pile.

Keywords: sinter, characterization, agglomeration, iron ore Iron ore sinters are the main burden of blast furnaces for pig iron production. The evaluation of these agglomerates is very important due to their properties affect indirectly the productivity and costs of production of the steel industry. In the sintering plants, the standard procedure of sinter assessment has been carried out by particle size control, bulk chemical analyses, tumbler and/or shatter tests and determination of reduction degradation and reducibility indexes. Microscopy techniques have just been applied to characterize sinters produced in pilot conditions, however, these techniques, the classical ones and the less traditional, allow enhancing the industrial sintering process assessment. For investigation of the phases, microstructures and fabric, reflected-light and scanning electron microscopy(backscattered electrons images) were used; for micro analytical chemical examination, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry; for Kikuchi patterns registers, electron backscattering diffraction. In addition to the microscopy techniques, the magnetic behavior was depicted by means of magnetic susceptibility measurements. Iron ore sinters are made up by hematite, magnetite, silicoferrite of calcium and aluminium and silicates. These phases develop either during sintering or, in some proportion, represent remnants of ores and fluxes; this is the case of some hematite and Mg-bearing silicate, respectively. From the magnetic susceptibility results, three different behaviors were determined, which are directly related to the magnetiteproportion in the samples. The phase association and proportion, the sintering conditions andthe quality assessment are some features appraised by such procedures, which reveal themagnitude of this proposal in sintering plants.

Design of the ultimate pit limit to direct long range mine planning has been a celebrated problem in the mining industry, and in mining academia, since 1965. Although many papers have been presented on this topic, even today, there is not a single solution technique which is widely accepted and considered universally best. Many philosophical differences exist among the pit planners concerning the use of different methods and it appears that resistance is very strong towards accepting other techniques if you are a believer in one. Whatever the case might be, the pit parameterization technique for the ultimate pit limit design is the latest and takes a different approach than its predecessors. There are already a number of papers which discuss the concepts involved (Francois-Bongarcon, 1976; 1978; 1980; 1981); however, the aim of this paper is to fill in some of the gaps which are thought to be missing in the previous discussions and, in addition, to present the recent research done on the subject at the Centre de Geostatistique de l?Ecole de Mines de Paris in Fontainbleau, France. This paper is divided into two parts. The first part will discuss practical aspects and interpretations of pit parameterization concepts with- out using mathematical or theoretical arguments; the reader who is interested in the theory should refer to Francois-Bongarcon (1978). The second part will present an approach to obtain a complete double parameterization of reserves using an inexpensive (computer costs) single parameterization algorithm. A case study of this approach is also included.

Keywords: Complex Iron Ores, Roasting, Tin, Zinc, Pellets, Comprehensive Recovery. The complex iron ores containing tin, zinc are typical refractory ores. Large reserves of the ores are found in China and have not been utilized efficiently so far. A new process of tin and zinc recovery and pellet preparation from iron concentrate containing tin and zinc by controlled atmosphere roasting is developed in this investigation. The results of 2573 N/P compression strength of product pellets, the 91.49% and 82.22% volatilization of tin and zinc respectively, are achieved for a concentrate containing 0.39% tin and 0.28% zinc. The strength and chemical compositions of the pellets meet the requirement of blast furnace ironmaking. Volatilization mechanism of tin and zinc are investigated. Thermodynamic study shows that the reduction balance curves of SnO2(s) and SnO(g) are proximate in the presence of carbon, and the standard formation free enthalpy of FeO and SnO2 is also approachable. Therefore, it is difficult to realize the complete volatilization of tin in the form of SnO(g) by selective reduction. But SnO2(s) and SnO(g) will form SnCl4(g) or SnCl2(g) in the presence of chlorides and can be easily volatilized from the ores.

Significant advances have been made in the design of centrifugal slurry pumps that are used for pumping high-density viscous and paste slurries. This paper presents the results of a series of centrifugal pump performance tests that were conducted using an FLSmidth 6 x 4 Krebs millMAX centrifugal pump. The pump was fitted with a dry mechanical seal to prevent dilution of the slurry from gland service water, as the theology of the slurry is sensitive to small changes in slurry density. Tests were done using paste kaolin slurry with Bingham yield stress values between 578-1 120 Pa and plastic viscosities between 728 and 1491 mPa.s. The viscous properties of the paste during each pump test were measured using a rotational viscometer. Pump head and efficiency de-rating were measured and compared to the correlations of Walker and Goulas (1984). The test data shows the pump's best-efficiency point (BEP) changes and shifts to the left of the performance curve. The pump efficiency decreases as the slurry yield stress increases. The head de-rating data shows more head de-rating at the low flow rates compared to the high flow rates for the high viscosity slurry, which is in line with the findings of Walker and Goulas (1984). This paper demonstrates that it is possible to pump very viscous, high yield stress slurries with limited head and efficiency de-rating using centrifugal pumps, provided that positive suction conditions are maintained at all times.

The uptake of zinc, lead, and copper by the flora of the Tui Base Mine area near Te Aroha is described.Vegetation and soil samples were taken from two traverses across the Raukaka Lode. Results. after statistical analysis, indicated that Beilschmiedia tawa was a suitable species for biogeochemical prospecting for lead and that SchefJlera digitata was satisfactory for zinc.The tawa showed a negative anomaly for lead over the vein itself but not over the adjacent dispersion halo. It was concluded that lead concentrations greater than 230 p.p.m. in the wood ash of the tawa and zinc concentrationsgreater than 540 p.p.m. in the leaf ash of S. digitata denoted threshold values for anomalous mineralization in the soil beneath. Although both species contained copper, neither indicated a soil anomaly for this element.

Introduction Some people say it is almost impossible to get mining permits in California. Some say the day of the lone mining entrepreneur is past. And some say you cannot make money mining gold where old-timers have already mined it, especially in Tertiary gravels. But a young mining operator and SME member, Tim Callaway, is proving these ideas wrong. Callaway's company, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc., has the necessary permits for its Gardner's Point gold mine in Sierra County, CA. And, Callaway has secured funds for the 7.7 km'/d (10,000 cypd) Tertiary gravel operation. The company's initial goal is to produce 373 to 466 kg/a (12,000 to 15,000 oz per year) of gold at Gardner's Point mine at a cost of less than $6.43/g ($200 per oz). Feasibility studies are currently being conducted to consider product levels up to the 1555 kg/a (50,000 oz per year) involving additional plants and infrastructure. While exploring for other hard-rock properties, the Brush Creek company already operates the Brush Creek lode gold mine. The mine sits high on a ridge south of Goodyear's Bar, which is located on the North Yuba river. It might be noted that the Brush Creek mine has been the subject of media stories recounting how a mine can operate with sensitivity to the environment. Gardner's Point project In 1983, Callaway negotiated with the Gardners Point Ltd. Partnership for control of the Gardner's Point property. The Partnership had been engaged for three years in securing permits, mapping and drilling, and test mining. The Partnership actually mined about 43.5 dam3 (57,000 cu yd) of gravel, which yielded 25.2 kg (810 oz) of free gold. Later, the Brush Creek company acquired ownership of the property. The company then began its own exploration and development program. As underground development proceeded at the Brush Creek mine, plans matured for a high-volume operation at Gardner's Point. Australian and English investors contacted Callaway. A joint venture was negotiated. The Australian owners became majority participants; the Brush Creek company, a minority participant and the operator. The Australian investors agreed to contribute $3.5 million (60%) to the Brush Creek Joint Ventures. The Brush Creek company will contribute its expertise as well as assets and liabilities valued at $2.3 million (40%). About $2 million has been allocated to the Gardner's Point project. Later, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc. sold 50.4% of the company's common stock to English investors for $5.4 million. Callaway negotiated this private placement, which permits further exploration of projects being investigated. Geography and history The Gardner's Point mine is located in the northern Sierra Nevada of California, about 9.6 km (6 miles) east of the little town of La Porte in Plumas County. The mine lies high on a ridge above Slate Creek, which divides Plumas and Sierra Counties. La Porte is accessible from the Sacramento area by a winding, paved, two-lane highway. But the mine is reached only by two different unpaved county and Forest Service roads. Both roads include steep grades in and out of the Slate Creek canyon. This paper describes the methods of constructing timber barricades against pillars of ore in the South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W., and discusses the behaviour of the various types of barricade alongside trucked sand filling and hydraulic stowed sand filling.Since the introduction of hydraulic stowing, cut and fill and overhand square letting methods have been used in mining the pillars. Such methods could not be used where the pillars had failed badly. The filling used is partially deslimed concentrating millresidue containing among other gangue minerals, calcite and a small amount of pyrrhotite and pyrite.The author is indebted to the mine superintendent of Broken Hill South Limited for permission to publish this paper.OLD METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING BARRICADES.Square Set Stopes.Before filling each stope the outer row of legs was lined inside with 10 in. x 2 in. boards spaced 2 in. apart. It was usual to tie the row of legs and caps together with timber dogs. As the space between the barricade and ground varied from nil to several feet, it was general practice to fill behind the lining boards. No provision was made to retain this sand during subsequent pillar stoping, consequently a run of sand right up the barricade could cause adilution of ore and serIOUS dIstortion of the barricade.

Corrosion of steel roof support systems can cause potential premature failure of the support, thus adversely affecting the excavation stability and rock-related safety. An in-house corrosion test system was designed and developed to test full-length roof bolts for material performance based on tensile load capacity and strength under different corrosive conditions found underground. The roof bolts tested are also used to identify the possible corrosion mechanisms that influenced the bolts’ performance over time. Initially, the most commonly used bolt material in the USA, the ASTM A615 grade 60 steel roof bolts, was tested with and without stresses in a simulated underground coal mining environment for approximately 6 months, and the results are discussed. Localized corrosion forms such as crevice and pitting were mainly observed after testing. The stressed and unstressed roof bolts with and without threads that were tested in alkaline coal mine corrosive environment for 6 months passed their load-bearing capacity as per ASTM F432 test standards. From the results, it is concluded that this test protocol could be applicable to test the material performance of different roof bolt metallurgies and coatings with desired modifications to the proposed methodology for the specific underground mine environment. This paper mainly discusses the test system and protocol and shortcomings of the system and makes recommendations based on the observations and results.

A novel synthesis is described for the preparation of supported gold catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation. The novel route is a variation of the inverse co-precipitation method and requires amphoteric metal hydroxides, with zinc and aluminium hydroxides chosen. Catalysts were prepared by inverse co-precipitation (ICPa) and by the novel route (ICPb) and tested for CO oxidation at 60ºC. Preliminary results showed the novel route to be superior to ICPa; the catalysts prepared by ICPb showed higher catalytic activities. The effect on catalytic activity of parameters such as pH, calcination temperature, washing of precursor and calcined catalysts and ageing was investigated. A preparation pH of 9 and a Zn to Al mass ratio of 3 proved to be optimal. It was possible to remove residual chloride by washing thereby enhancing catalyst performance. Ageing and Mg citrate addition were also shown to improve catalyst performance. Characterization of the catalysts revealed that better activities were obtained when the support was more crystalline and had a higher surface area. The presence of carbonate-containing species in the support decreased catalytic activity. 197Au Mössbauer Spectroscopy revealed the presence of Au3+ when catalysts were heat-treated at temperatures of 200ºC and below. Catalysts calcined at 400º had 75% of the gold present as Au0, with the remaining gold present as Au3+.

A unity of viewpoint emerged from the workshop. The concept that transmission is via characteristic modes was a common theme in many of the presentations. Also, the confusion an the meaning of monofilar and bifilar to describe these dominant modes was cleared up. But, there was still a healthy divergence of opinion on what constitutes an optimum system. It was generally agreed that further analytical and experimental work is definitely needed. In particular, it was stressed that independent measurements of the constitutive properties of the electromagnetic environment are needed. Also, there was considerable concern that laboratory measurements of rock samples could lead to misleading results for the effective conductivities. Also, there was a general recognition that over simplified propagation theory should not be used to interpret field data. From a theoratical and practical point of view, it was realized that mode coupling plays a vital role in the transmission channel. One must not only understand which and how many propagation modes are excited by the transmitting antenna, but the conversion of energy from one mode type to another must be accounted for. This conversion can either be done intentionally (by fixed mode convertors) or non intentionally (by random wall roughness). In fact, mode conversion can be quite complicated when various propagation paths exist such as when insulated cables, leaky feeders, grounded rails, coal seams, etc. all convey portions of the electromagnetic energy. However, this state of affairs should be regared as an. opportunity for extended communication coverage in mines rather than a limitation of a desig. procedure based on preconceived notions of the dominant propagation mechanism.

Currently two of the most important characteristics of construction aggregates are (a) the particle size distribution (psd) and (b) the “shape” of the aggregate particles. The long established test methods and standards for these properties require substantial resources and most suppliers can take samples and conduct tests at intervals measured in days (psd) or even months (shape). Furthermore these tests require time: so the results are available only after material has been stockpiled or shipped. In the rare cases where problems are found the out-of-spec material has often been shipped to points unknown. There are substantial advantages to be obtained if the psd and other geometrical properties could be obtained from the material as it moves through the production processes and if the results could be reported back within seconds or minutes to Plant Control Managers. This paper describes a single on-line system used to evaluate production of crushed material in a production quarry. The system consists of an enclosure (containing the camera and lighting etc.) mounted over a production belt. Images are fed by fiber optic cable to a nearby control room where the data are analyzed; stored; displayed; and made available for integration into a process control system. Numerous forms of display can be created according to the needs of the producer. Once programmed by an automation engineer all functions of operation are fully automated. The system has permitted over 400 tests per hour with a feed back time less than 2 seconds. Sufficient geometrical measurements are made so that many different “shape” factors can be computed on a similar time scale. The paper summarizes the results from approximately 100 shifts of about 8 hours each and compares the imaging method with the current standard hand methods. Study of the data generated showed that, when combined with additional plant information, the system can be used to generate additional useful control information.

"The SIDMIN program aims at filling the mineral processor’s need to know the deportment of ‘minerals of interest’ not just ‘elements of interest’ that pass through the processing plants. Generally, chemistry is used as a tool of routine monitoring on site. Mineralogy, which is relatively much slower, is used more as a tool of research and post mortem investigations and these services are usually provided by a distant facility. The SIDMIN program enables site management to receive chemical and quantitative mineralogical reports on their critical samples daily, simultaneously and affordably.The author developed the SIDMIN program at ZCCM Nchanga Division where it continues to be a powerful tool for monitoring the efficiency of operations. Outlines are given of procedures for quick sample preparation and quantification of significant minerals in process samples. A specimen report is presented, which shows the format of reporting the contributions of individual minerals to metal losses at critical stages of the circuit. It is shown that SIDMIN provides timely information to management, about trends and abrupt changes in the quality of ore, and its processing, in a way never achievable by chemical analyses alone. This greatly helps in resolving the age-old problem of ‘bad ore’ or ‘bad operations’ on a day-by-day basis. For example increase in copper mica in the feed indicates excessive ore dilution during mining. Increased loss of free sulphides was traced to insufficient reagent conditioning time at the Concentrator. Persistent losses of leachable oxides at the Tailings Leach Plant were traced to inadequate leach residence time.SIDMIN is affordable because it can be implemented using basic optical microscopes, minimal quantities of micro-chemical reagents and custom trained site staff who demonstrate good colour perception and an ability to follow laid down procedures consistently."

Medium carbon, low alloy, high-strength steels containing Ni, Cr, and Mo are used for the fabrication of various types of high-strength fasteners required for launch vehicle structures. Cold heading properties and response to hardening and tempering are the essential requirements of the material for fabrication and application, respectively. Combining these two requirements is essentially warranted in high-strength fastener-grade steels. Cold heading properties require ductility, which can be achieved through spheroidizing treatments. In the absence of a suitable spheroidizing cycle for medium carbon 3.8 Ni, 1.8 Cr, 0.3 Mo steel, experiments were carried out with a theoretical understanding of the alloy system. This paper presents the experiments and results obtained after a spheroidizing treatment, which was carried out to optimize the process.
