The mining industry in Australia frequently uses the services of specialist engineering and managing contractors and consultants for a majority of the work required for project development, from feasibility studies to project commissioning. The project owner's prime objectives are to achieve predictability and competitive advantage for their project. As the majority of this work will be carried out by contractors, the effective evaluation, selection and management of these contractors in the most appropriate forms of contracts is an essential ingredient to project success. The first stage to project development should be for the owner to examine its own resources to establish the role that it will fill and thereby identify the role and scope of contractors' involvement. Once the owner has developed this work plan, the selection of contractors and consultants should be structured to ensure that the owner acquires the appropriate expertise and experience to achieve its project objectives. The sequence of selection procedures is: 1. Pre-qualification of prospective contractors according to the owner's adopted criteria, through the use of a pre-qualification questionnaire. 2. Evaluation by the owner tender board according to predetermined mandatory criteria. 3. Preparation of tender documents for submission to qualified contractors. 4. Evaluation of tender submissions by the owner tender board using a pre-determined, weighted matrix of technical and commercial criteria. 5. Final selection and contract negotiation.

The success of smooth blasting essentially depends on geological condition of rock. Also, in the perimeter hole, borehole pressures with light, well-distributed explosive loads are important to minimise overbreak. In order to simulate perimeter holes with scaled model test, the borehole pressure was considered as a factor of scale. Hydraulic oil pressure is applied as borehole pressure instead of using explosives and detonators in order to remove the undesirable effects of detonators in an experimental set-up of just two perimeter holes in a tunnel blast. The borehole pressure on a perimeter hole is nearly reproduced with hydraulic pressure which is generated by non-electric detonators in the hermetical cylinder.

The materials containing copper which are refined in the United Statrs, are, for the most part, the natiye noppers of Lake Superior. IJntil quite recently but little pig copper Was made for sale, and that came principally from the pure sulphorous ores of New England and the Sonth, and was generally sdd to reSneries not far from the ore filrnaceu. A stnall aiuoiint found its way into the'niarket which was produced either as the by-product of the treatment of gold and silver ores, or as the result of the treatment of impure copper ores; but both these grades, on account of the impurities they contained, were loolced on with stlspicion, and were not sought for. A11 the grtlGis of pig coppcr are sold by the unit of oopper contents, a great redtiction being made in the price when impurities are present. There are at the present time only three works which treat native copper, the two of the Detroit and Lake Superior copper Company, and the works of C:G. Hussey & Co., in Pittsburgh. There are a few works ivhich smelt sulphuroris ores and refine their pig; bo sides these t1le1-e arc a few siuall works where gig copper is refined uuly. Some of these purcIlase blscir copper, refine scrap, or simply refine such grades of ingot copper as are found in the market, but nlostly that from Lake Superior, for the purpose of getting it into swh shapes that can be handled cpmtriercially to advantage, such as in making large plates or high grades of wire fir electrical purposes. Amtrak made a decision to replace an aging bascule bridge with a vertical lift bridge for their crossing of the Thames River in New London, Connecticut. The new lift bridge occupies the same alignment and shares the same foundations as the bascule span. During construction the deep foundation caisson supporting the bascule span settled and tilted. Investigation into possible reasons revealed interesting historical facts, both of the construction of the innovative open well caisson foundations and of the state-of-the-art in tremie concrete placing methods in use at the turn of the century. This paper describes both of these topics.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund, is monitoring the response of two foundations to ground movements induced by subsidence from high extraction mining in southern Illinois. The objectives of the monitoring program are to study the inter- action between the ground surface and a foundation during a subsidence event and to determine the capability of the tiltmeter to detect and monitor subsidence movements. Tiltmeter data were obtained on two foundations constructed near Sesser, IL. One of the 30-by 40- ft foundations was constructed with a typical poured concrete footing, the other with a rein- forced-concrete footing poured on top of pol yethylene sheeting placed over a compacted layer of sand. Soil-filled bins were placed on the perimeters of both foundations to simulate superstructure loads. Monitoring pins and tiltplates were installed on the corners and midpoints of the footing. Additional survey points were established on the five-acre site to track the mining advance. This paper describes the monitoring instrumentation and techniques as they relate to the mining and site conditions. The capability of a tilt- meter to detect and follow the tilt of the foundations is demonstrated.

"Alkali/alumina and MgO/alumina molar ratio plots graphically portray both chemical and mineralogical changes accompanying potassic, phyllic, argillic, chloritic, and alunitic alteration of quartz monzonites and granodiorites hosting porphyry (as well as lode and greisen) ore deposits. The molar ratio plots can be used to identify different types of alteration. In most cases, the identification based on molar ratios coincides with petrographic data. In those instances where the molar ratio and petrographic identifications do not agree, the mineralogy might need to be re-examined. Hydrothermal alteration studies using trace elements could benefit from the application of complementary alkali/alumina molar ratio plots.Le diagramme des rapports molaires alkali/alumine et MgO/alumine illustre clairement les changements chimiques et minéralogiques qui accompagnent les altérations potassique, phyllique, argillique, chloritique, and alunitique des monzonites à quartz et des granodiorites encaissant les gîtes de type porphyrique, ainsi que des veines et des greisens qui leur sont associés. Exploration targets and results in the mining industry are commonly summarized in terms of tonnage and grade. Business appraisals require, as additional information, the expected profit or loss implied by the physical summay. The early incorporation of knowledge gained through financial analysis computations can provide a means for economically resolving many common exploration and development problems. Examples of such applications from the activities of exploration planning, reconnaissance, land acquisition, and development planning are presented. While prospecting for mineral deposits, geologists are frequently asked what they hope to find or have found. The response is usually descriptive, such as "50 million tons of 1% copper," and the economic implications are deferred until a capital investment decision is required. At that time, a financial analysis integrating the four analysis components is completed. These components are: 1) Tonnage and Average grade above cutoff grade 2) Capital and operating costs 3) Product value 4) Appropriate profit or loss accounting Close examination of these components reveals that there is no intrinsic reason for avoiding financial analyses at earlier stages in exploration, as long as the uncertainty of the estimate is realized. Tonnage and average grades are commonly estimated at early stages in exploration. For this component, the appropriate cutoff is the major uncertainty. Capital and operating costs are difficult to estimate before detailed quantitative information is available, but estimates useful for the types of applications pertinent to earlier exploration stages are possible. Product value estimates may or may not be difficult, depending on the pricing structure of the particular commodity. A simplified accounting procedure usually may be adopted without introducing any significant loss of validity. This paper describe some of the financial analysis applications which are pertinent during mineral exploration and deposit development. These applications lend additional insight during exploration planning, land acquisition, physical exploration, and development. The examples are oriented toward a hypothetical management investment policy which is based on a single criterion, a minimum 15% discounted cash flow rate of return. In reality, managements use multiple criteria. This simplification is convenient for purposes of presentation and does not invalidate the examples. Computers are useful, but not a requirement, for the applications described. The use of computers provides the results on a more timely basis at costs lower than equivalent manual computations. UNDERLYING PRINCIPLES AND ANALYSIS METHODS Data estimates are subject to uncertainty. The analyst may choose to assess this uncertainty by using one of two principles. Each principle has some advantages. The principle most commonly employed is "assumed certainty." Each financial analysis is based on one set of selected data, which may represent the average estimates, minimum expected conditions, etc. The critical data is identified by making successive calculations, varying the values used. Such studies, called sensitivity analyses, isolate the economic effect of various uncertainties, and guide the allocation of future efforts toward improving the overall accuracy of the analysis. A second principle, "assumed risk," examines the interactive effect of the current uncertainties by qualitatively assigning probability distributions to each data element. These probability distributions indicate the currently appraised chance that a given numerical value will prove to be true. The corresponding procedure, risk analysis, consists of processing many individual financial analyses, each analysis being based on randomly selected numerical values from the probabilistic distributions. The result is a numerical presentation of the uncertainty, but care must be exercised in the interpretation of results. The advantage of this procedure is the direct measurement of economic uncertainty caused by the interaction of uncertain estimates. Kennecott Copper Corp. has developed computer systems for accomplishing sensitivity and risk analyses.

The electrowinning of beryllium from beryllium oxide (BeO) using a molten-salt electrolyte composed of 56 LiF-37 BeF2-7 BeO (mole-percent) was investigated. Anodes made of porous carbon were found to be superior in current-carrying capacity and gave a lower cell voltage than other types of anode material tested. When porous carbon anodes were used) the resultant increase in anode area prevented anode passivation. The cell voltage was 3.3 volts) and electrode current efficiencies of 50 to 70 percent were obtained. The electrodeposited beryllium was recovered as beryllium powder or was coalesced to metal beads by heating to 1,300° C.

The sequences in alteration and mineralisation from five copper-gold porphyry systems (Taysan and Didipio, Philippines; Horse-Ivaal and Wafi River, PNG; and Goonumbla, Australia) and one gold-copper skarn system (Browns Creek, Australia) are documented in this paper. Alteration and mineralisation in all these systems reflect a common evolution from crystallisation of melts emplaced at shallow crustal levels (zoned potassic -> propylitic alteration), followed by exsolution of volatile-rich fluids from these melts (porphyry quartz ¦K-feldspar/biotite veins and local high temperature advanced argillic alteration), to a progressive cooling of the intrusion which results in associated retrograde alteration. Copper-gold mineralisation in all cases is almost exclusively restricted to the cooler retrograde events. The recognition of the temporal and spatial zonations in alteration and mineralisation in gold-copper porphyry systems has significant relevance in the interpretation of geophysical signatures, overprinting alteration, vein sequences and structural controls, and can lead to more focused and potentially more cost-effective exploration.

Ensuring the success of a major resource development project, whether in the Gippsland Basin or elsewhere, is typically both a complex and costly process. It is therefore imperative from the point of view of the proponents of such a project - and in particular the financiers - that everything possible be done to minimise administrative confusion and delay in the establishment phase of the project, and to put systems in place which enable the project to run smoothly and efficiently in the later stages of its development and operation. An essential element in this process is ensuring that the project management is able to come to terms with and deal effectively with the relevant planning and environmental laws.

Researchers from the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) completed field trials during coal mine rescue contests using simulated gas detectors in place of placards. The gas monitor simulator (GMS) devices replaced static, paper placards to deliver gas concentration data. Eleven teams were observed during the field contest, which was approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). GMS devices were given to three team members, the captain, and both gasmen. Observation of teams revealed that team members changed behavior by acknowledging and sharing information more often while using the GMS. As a result of this research, it has been demonstrated that under the existing contest format, the newly developed GMS device may be used with no adverse impact on team contest performance. Furthermore, when GMS technology advantages are used, contest realism is improved. In the future, competency assessment may be incorporated.

Isotopes and hydrochemistry were used to define groundwater flow systems and better understand the hydrogeological setting of the Karijini National Park, which is in the Central Pilbara region adjacent to the Marandoo iron ore mine. Based on the stable isotope composition of the water samples, the data can be divided into two main groups. Groundwater is characterised by depleted dD and d18O, suggesting no significant evaporation effect. Surface water on the other hand is more enriched in dD and d18O due to evaporation. The relatively high concentration of Cl- compared to rainfall and depleted dD and d18O values of groundwater indicate that recharge of the aquifers is occurring during intense rainfall events when rapid infiltration occurs. Evapotranspiration then acts to concentrate ionic species prior to recharge. Relationships between the major ion concentration and catchment area, surficial Tertiary cover and distance between recharge and discharge were identified. The results show that these catchment variables combine to determine unique water chemistry for each sub catchment in Karijini National Park. The TDS concentration of the groundwater in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation that hosts the Marandoo ore body is higher than most of the water bodies surrounding the mining area suggesting significant modification or different recharge mechanisms to that of the Karijini groundwater.

The deposits were formed from low-temperature alteration of pyroclastic rocks. Properties investigated include their cation exchange capacity, swelling capacity, pH, rheological properties, the green and dry compressive strengths, shatter index, wet tensile strength, compactability and permeability. It was found that deposits with abundant opal-CT have poor physical properties. The rheological and swelling properties were found to be influenced by the bentonite grade (smectite content) and the degree of disaggregation of the smectite quasi-crystals. The only deposits of high grade which had good foundry properties were those with no opal-CT. Hydrothermal alteration was detrimental to the physical and chemical properties of bentonites in that it decreased the smectite content and the pH and changed the smectite layer charge and the lattice dimensions

Since then, the division has become established in various industries such as ferro-alloys and non-ferrous metals, and in numerous other special applications. During the evolution of this technology, more efficient units with longer lifetimes were developed. Today, especially the potential of DC-based smelters, raises worldwide attention, with some projects having already started to implement this kind of technology. This paper evaluates SMS Siemag?s general viewpoint regarding the potential application of DC smelter technology and possible options for the ferro-alloy and non-ferrous industry. SMS Siemag is currently executing a FeCr project in Kazakhstan, where four of the world?s largest closed-type DC smelting furnaces, with a power input of 72 MW, will be installed. These furnaces include the latest technological features of modern DC smelters, which are described in this paper. SMS Siemag has started a long-term research and development project allowing a direct comparison of AC versus DC technology on a large scale, using a recently installed 1 MVA test furnace at the IME at the University of Aachen, in Germany. For open-type ferro-alloy and Si-metal furnaces, SMS Siemag has developed an energy recovery system, which is presented in this paper.

With gentle bedding within the zone of support pressure the delamination in roof rocks may occur only on those stratification planes where cohesiveness of rock is close to zero. Unlike this, at dip angles of more than 30-35° disintegration of rock occurs on the surfaces with cohesion up to 5 MPa. Therefore, the delamination in roof rocks at inclined beds is greater than at gently dipping ones. The original disintegration along the pressure fissures with the formation of block structure at inclined strata is not typical, and it may be observed only in roofs with included thick rocks; in this case, the orientation of fractures depends on the angle of seam inclination. Deformation of roof roocks above the mined-out space is determined by anisotropy of layers stiffness (hardness). With the increase of dip angle the own bearing capacity of layers will rise in the direction of strike. It was emphasized that the natural and technological factors are of great importance for rock pressure manifestation in longwalls.

Conventional augered, cast-in-place (ACIP) piles were introduced into the New York City area as a result of the damage to existing structures caused by pile driving operations. ACIP piles are often specified where deep foundations are to be installed adjacent to transit facilities, sensitive underground utilities or in close proximity to existing structures. However, loss-of-ground issues associated with the installation of ACIP piles have prevented the wide-scale use of these systems. Beginning in 2002, Berkel & Company Contractors, Inc. began using its augered, cast-in-place displacement (ACIPD) system in the New York City area. Like conventional ACIP piles, this system produces almost no vibration. Also, as almost no material is brought to the surface, there is no opportunity for loss of ground. This paper presents a description of Berkel's displacement pile system and a brief discussion of six projects in the New York City area that have been executed with this system over the past two years.

When we are beset with the economic problems the world faces today, we are always inclined to look at the shorter term future. Today I would like to take a long-term view of our industry, project historical demands for our products into the future and discuss opportunities for our members. Perhaps we could firstly look at the long-term demand trends for our metals. If I tend to use non ferrous metals as a basis for my figures it is because this data is more readily available to me. I am sure that most other products of our industry show similar trends.

Operational data of BOF and the slag samples for different starting conditions of phosphorus(0.06–0.26 per cent P) and silicon content (0.3–1.2 per cent Si) of hot metal have been analysed. The contribution of parameters that are well known to affect phosphorus distribution at tap, like basicity, temperature, FeO content of slag, slag mass etc., is investigated through the models of ionic theory of slag, optical basicity, regular solution approach and molecular theory of slag. The best overall results are obtained by the model based on molecular theory of slag in which several operational parameters are also incorporated. The investigations of different slag samples, based on optical, SEM, EPMA and X-ray studies, reveal the effect of MgO and Al2O3on slag morphology and phosphorus distribution in different phases. It is important to consider phosphorus distribution ratio in the solid and liquid part of slag. The solid part of slag, which is mostly dicalciumsilicate, can contain up to 5 per cent phosphorus. The phosphorus content of the liquid part of slag may depend upon the phosphorus content of hot metal or phosphorus load of slag. It is found that incorporation of effect of dicalciumsilicate in the model improves the accuracy of prediction. For better process control, the addition of iron ore towards the end of blow must be avoided while treating high phosphorus hot metal or during the production of ultra low phosphorus steels.
