Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. Geological evidence from tropical laterites indicates clearly that platinum group metals are taken into solution and precipitated to form grains larger than those in the source rocks. Platinum and palladium move differentially in the surface environment, with Pt partitioning into soils and eluvial or alluvial deposits while Pd remains more mobile in natural waters. Natural organic acids, particularly humic acid, can interact with platinum-group elements and concentrate them even in areas where their content in rocks is very low. Experimental work has confirmed that Pt and Pd can be taken into solution by humic acid at room temperature and in geologically short time-spans. Solubility and deposition may be controlled by physicochemical conditions, reaction kinetics or an adsorption effect, or there may be two competing reactions, solubilisation assisted by organic matter and a kinetically slower metal precipitation

The whole layer of material lying on top of the jig screen.Ragging. The layer of denser material lying immediately above the jig screen, which is too coarse to pass through this screen and is confined horizontally by the cells of the top grid.Ore Column. The layer of ore pulp between the ragging and the top-water.Top Water. The water, carrying fine material in suspension, which flOiWS over the surface of the jig bed.Hutch Water. Despite the prevailing low gold price environment at the time of acquisition, Glamis anticipated rapid development of the San Martin project due to the quality of the deposit and other positive factors.Following favorable exploration and permitting activities in the first half of 1999, Glamis prepared a Feasibility study. In October 1999, Glamis decided to proceed with the development of the project and selected Hatch to provide the engineering, procurement and construction management services for the project. The San Martin project was in full-scale commercial operation approximately 14 months after the receipt of Board approval, and by July 2001 the San Martin project was operating at approximately 150% of its feasibility design capacity."

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la modernización de los sistemas relacionados con el control y supervisión de las áreas de extracción por solventes, depositación electrolítica y áreas auxiliares. Como consecuencia de ello, se incrementó la operatividad, disponibilidad y fiabilidad con cero paradas por perturbaciones eléctricas, así como redujo el tiempo utilizado para el diagnóstico y solución de problemas.

The Toulon Tunnel project is a key component of the highway corridor on the French Riviera between Marseille and Nice and is a fundamental transportation infrastructure for the region. The first design studies started in the 1960s. The tunnel project is comprised of two separate tunnels: south and north. The north tunnel was built between 1992 and 2002 after 10 years of difficult construction. On March 15, 1996, for example, a collapse of the tunnel in the Marchand area generated a sinkhole in the city center, causing a 20-month delay. The south tunnel alignment runs parallel to the north tunnel below Toulon?s historical downtown at a depth of 20 to 40 m (65 to 131 ft) with some areas with less than 10 m (32 ft) of cover. The risk management program was studied to be a state of the art program in urban tunneling construction.

Isa): I found many ideas to interest me in Haddon King's paper "Notes on Ore Occurrences in Highly Metamorphosed Precambrian Rocks" (Stillwell Anniversary Volume).At Mount Isa I have not been happy about some of the longstanding appreciations of the geological evidence as fresh data accumulated, and as more and more knowledge has been building up outside Mount Isa in recent years of sedimentary deposition of sulphides.Accordingly, I organized a small section of the Geological Department at Mount Isa at the beginning of 1958 under Senior Geologist, W. J. Murray to reappraise our geological record and investigate old interpretations and new ones that arise. The work is expected to take several years to complete, but it is hoped that sufficient will be done before then to permit the most plausible story on the ore genesis to be chosen. In the meantime, W. J. Murray has proposed, in a Company Report, that the.epigenetic features of the silver,lead-zinc deposits, which are essentially conformable with the shales, could have resulted from remobilized syngenetic deposits.Haddon King, on p. 159; has listed six assumptions that are required by a magmatic-hydrothermal theory of, origin for conformable deposits. The focus in the iron ore industry has shifted from increasing production volumes with less regard for cost, to efficient production of quality tonnes. BHP Billiton iron ore geoscience and exploration has embedded infrared spectroscopic sensing of drill hole samples to help meet this challenge.Infrared spectroscopy is delivering mineral predictions that are used for (automated) geology logging and modelling. The spectra are processed together with other available data sets to predict geometallurgical and geotechnical variables that include lump per cent and uniaxial compressive strength.Trials are ongoing to test the benefit of infrared spectroscopy during mining, including the analysis of grade control samples and remote sensing of mine faces. Results show great benefits in the fields of short-term geology modelling, better understanding of material (handling) properties, identification of geotechnical risk areas and high resolution ore-waste delineation.These trials are bringing BHP Billiton iron ore closer to its ultimate goal of having infrared spectroscopic data collected across the mining value chain. Once such data are available everywhere, regression models can be trained at one point (eg iron grade model trained on exploration samples) and be applied elsewhere (eg iron grade predicted on mine faces). Such predictive analytics will enable not only high precision mining, but also provide maximum time to tailor plant design to the ore in the ground, based on learnings from ores processed in other plants. The Bureau of Mines motor gasoline surveys have been conducted in January and July, during 1920 and 1921. The Bureau has obtained and analyzed samples of gasoline representative of that marketed in the larger cities. These surveys have indicated that the gasoline on the market during the winter months is more volatile than that sold during the summer months. Naturally, the motorist desires a more volatile gasoline in the cold winter months, as it affords greater ease in starting. The fourth semi-annual motor gasoline survey, conducted during the month of July, shows an interesting relation between the market price and the quality of motor gasoline. This is particularly evident if figures obtained today are compared with those of a year ago. At the time the Bureau of Mines conducted its summer survey of motor gasoline last year, the average tank wagon price of gasoline was 28.2 cents per gallon. This year it was 21.2 cents, a drop of practically 25%.

The New Pacific Northwest Baseball Park, now known as Safeco Field, is located directly south of the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington, and will be the new home of the Seattle Mariners baseball team. The location of the ball field is shown on Figure 1, Vicinity Map. The seating capacity is 45,600, and outfield distances are 331 feet in left, 405 feet in center, and 326 feet in right field. The overall dimensions of the stadium are 680 by 800 feet. It is bordered on the east by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad main line. A unique aspect of this ballpark is the retractable roof with a north-south span length of 660 feet. The roof consists of three separate sections that roll on elevated rails running east-west on the north and south sides of the stadium. The soil conditions consisted of near-surface fill underlain with alluvial and Estuarine deposits to depths of 60 to 80 feet. The bearing soils consisted of very dense, glacially overridden deposits. Groundwater is 4 to 7 feet below the ground surface, and the alluvial deposits are subject to liquefaction during a strong motion earthquake.

Open Cut Mining: now widespread, likely to be sustained in the future though the long-term is hard to predict as new mineral deposits are likely to be deeper ? Waste Rock / Overburden: increasing rapidly, likely to be sustained in the future and closely linked to open cut mining, especially for coal and base metals ? Economic Resources: commonly increasing but some remain stable or gradually declining, future is linked closely to exploration, technology and economics; Increasing population, changing life style and technology development, ultimately result in sustainability in mining industry to hang in the balance and continue.

Introduction In preparing this paper considerable time was spent attempting to find some upbeat data about the mining industry, so those of us in the field could feel somewhat better about future prospects. Much to my regret, I failed to uncover substantial evidence that our near-term or, for that matter, our long-term opportunities appear all that bright in North America. That is certainly not the kind of assessment anyone likes to hear or accept as even a possibility. Those remarks may, on the surface, appear far too pessimistic. This industry will experience a recovery and most likely will see conditions begin to improve later this year or early next. The kind and degree of recovery, however, will more than likely differ from those experienced in the past. Fundamental Changes Clearly, the fundamentals on a world scale of our business have undergone important changes. In recognizing these fundamental changes, mining authorities believe productivity advances are needed to change the direction mining has taken in recent years. The really tough question is whether increases in productivity will be enough to change the course of events that has dominated the mining sector for the past decade. Before one can provide an honest answer, an appraisal of what has and is happening now is necessary. Here are some changes and events that have taken place that effect domestic mining and will probably continue: • Mineral-rich lesser developed countries (LDCs) in Africa, South America, and Asia-Pacific have reached a point where they have developed the needed mining infrastructure to not only produce at a high rate, but in many instances, at a lower cost than fully developed countries. Just as importantly, these countries, even if they do not enjoy lower costs, will produce for world export with government subsidies because min¬ing products are key in obtaining badly needed foreign exchange. • These producing countries also have the distance advantage of lower labor, environmental, and other important regulatory costs. If that were not enough, these same countries have minerals with considerably higher grade ore and, in some cases, much lower cost accessibility. • Exporting North American commodities is impaired by a dollar that continues to strengthen against other important currencies around the world. There are other impediments to overcome, but these represent some of the realities our industry faces. Can those obstacles be overcome through improving productivity? In the past, this industry has offset the impact of these events to a sizeable degree through innovations of mining techniques, equipment and processes, and by increasing the size of its individual operations to reduce costs. Will further enhancements along these lines be enough to alter this changing balance in the future? While there is no answer, it is apparent that if we do not mount a full-scale assault in some key areas, our prospects will not be encouraging. Productivity improvements throughout the entire chain of the mining industry most certainly rates as a high priority. Every link in that chain from mine planning, equipment selections, and transportation considerations needs to be examined and reexamined to assure the lowest effective cost is developed. Quality, while oftentimes costing a little more initially, is still the most cost effective purchasing decision to make. Regulations Another area of concern is regulations, be they environmental or those that dictate what must or must not be done in running our business. Identifying high value areas of unmined coal when large quantities of coal are available relative to annual markets is difficult because of the uncertainty of when the coal is to be mined. A GIS based methodology developed to value reserve coal in a producing coal region for the purpose of ad valorem taxation also identifies high value areas for mining investment. The methodology is unique in that it accounts for most mining, environmental, and market factors to determine when specific properties are to be mined. The methodology and data base are useful for directing regional exploration and acquisition activities toward most favorable areas.

O aumento crescente dos requisitos de segurança a serem atingidos pela indústria automotiva vem cada vez mais exigindo a utilização de aços com maior conteúdo tecnológico, que é o caso do aço bifásico (“dual-phase”), que são caracterizados por uma microestrutura ferrítico-martensítica. Neste trabalho, estudaram-se, em escala laboratorial, os efeitos das temperaturas de encharque intercríticas (750, 800 e 850°C) e distintas taxas obtidas por dois diferentes meios de resfriamento (ar e ar forçado) na obtenção de microestrutura bifásica a partir de dois aços laminados a frio “full-hard” (produzidos industrialmente), com micro-adições de Nb e Mo e diferentes teores de C e Mn. Utilizando ensaios mecânicos de tração, microscopia óptica (MO) e eletrônica de varredura (MEV), observaram-se as influências da temperatura de encharque e da taxa de resfriamento sobre as microestruturas resultantes e as influências da presença de ferrita encruada, dos carbonetos não dissolvidos e da morfologia da segunda fase sobre as propriedades mecânicas das amostras estudadas.

On December 9, 2003 at 3:59 PM EST an earthquake with a 4.5 magnitude occurred in central Virginia. According to a survey on the US Geological Survey website, this quake was felt as far away as Bridgeton Missouri, approximately 683 mile from the epicenter1. We recorded the vibrations from this earthquake on 14 seismographs that were set up for monitoring vibrations from blasting activities in the area. Having this data gave us an opportunity to compare earthquake and blasting vibrations. The amplitudes, frequencies and duration were much different than vibrations from mining and construction blasting. A common question we get from homeowners when discussing vibrations from blasting activities is “How does that compare to the Richter scale?” The goal of this report is to provide some simple answers for that question. The Richter and Mercalli scale are compared to the particle velocities in order to show their relationship.

The occurrence of lollingite (FeAs2 ) in the Broken Hill lode is recorded by an analysis of lollingite published in the Annual Report of the Department of Mines, New South Wales, for the year 1934 (p. 69). The analysed specimen came from the North Broken Hill mine, and material from the same occurrence (Specimeh No. 1), as well as two specimens (Nos. 3 and 4) from the Zinc Corporation mine, have been forwarded· to us by Mr. M. Mawby of the Zinc Corporation Mine. This material has been supplemented by another specimen (No. 2) from the Zinc Corporation mine, passed over to us by Dr. I. Wark.The original analysis of lollingite is quoted in Table I, and shows that the Broken Hill lollingite contains appreciable amounts of cobalt and nickel, and, indicates that the iron is to a considerable extent replaced by cobalt and nickel, so that its formula should be written (FeCoNi) As2This is supported by a microscopical examination of a polished surface of the lollingite, in which no individual arsenides of cobalt and nickel can be detected.Coarse grained galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite are attached to our specimen of lollingite from the North mine, and are separated by a sharp junction from a mass of lollingite associated with some arsenopyrite and garnet. The massive lollingite can be distinguished from arsenopyrite in the hand specimen by a much brighter, silvery lustre, against which arsenopyrite appears a dull silver grey; but the passage from lollingite to arsenopyrite appears transitional.

In recent years, the amount of ferritic stainless steel production has increased. However, the rust formation by the salt spray test was pointed out in the past. At the centre of the circular rust zone, pitting corrosion where water-soluble nonmetallic inclusions were embedded was observed. These inclusions originated from the suspended refining slag and consisted of multi-phase oxides and sulphides. By the experiments and thermodynamic consideration of the water-solubility, not only CaO or CaS, but also lime rich calcium-aluminates or calcium-silicates have shown large water-solubility. The composition of oxide phase in the inclusions was almost the same among the samples from molten steel, slab, or cold rolled sheet. On the contrary, CaS was clearly observed around the oxide in the sample of cold rolled sheet, although it was not found in the molten steel or slab samples. The enrichment of sulphur occurred from the desulphurization reaction of the suspended slag particles in the molten steel and also occurred from the diffusion of sulphur to the oxide inclusions during the heating of the slab. The optimization of refining slag composition has lead to produce the ferritic stainless steel without rust formation. On average, there are approximately 10 fatal haul truck accidents per year. The most common causes for haul truck accidents include mechanical problems, inadequate training and insufficient road/berm maintenance. Due to the frequency and magnitude of haul truck accidents, new training methods are being investigated. With the widespread availability of computers and new technology becoming more reasonably priced, the ability to incorporate computer-based training for miners is becoming more possible. It has been shown that computer-based training is just as effective in knowledge acquisition as traditional lectures, and computer-based training can lead to a significant increase in the retention of material (Williams and Zahed, 1996). Studies have also shown that more engaging training methods lead to more effective knowledge acquisition (Burke et al., 2006). A supplemental system for current and new miner training to address the common causes of fatal accidents was developed. The training system is a virtual preshift inspection of a haul truck, and it can train new haul truck operators to identify parts that look defective. The training will increase an operator?s ability to recognize problematic parts and correctly identify the corrective action needed. Increasing the quality of training by providing an engaging, simulated hands-on environment will lead to safer behaviors by trainees, which will ultimately lead to fewer accidents and fatalities.

"The metallurgical performance of the column flotation process is determined by the concentrate grade and recovery. Although the former can be continuously measured using an on-stream analyzer, the latter must be estimated by a material balance calculation based on seldom verified steady-state assumptions. Consequently, the automatic control and optimization of flotation columns should be performed using secondary variables having a strong influence on the metallurgical performance, such as froth depth, gas hold-up or bubble surface area flux and bias. The aim of this paper is to present a model-based automatic control strategy using froth depth and bias measurements obtained from virtual sensors developed at Laval University. Preliminary pilot plant results on two-phase (water– air) and three-phase system (water – minerals – air) will be presented and eventual industrial implementation of such a strategy as well as the possibility of achieving effective real-time optimization from bias and froth depth measurements will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONFlotation columns have been widely studied and used in mineral processing for about twenty years. Although a great deal of work has been accomplished to understand the influence of different variables such as froth depth (H), bubble surface area flux (Sb) and bias (Jb) on the metallurgical performance, the measurement of some of these variables is still difficult to be performed – except at the laboratory level – because in most cases, no commercial device yet exists.As a result of this, it is almost impossible to achieve neither efficient control nor optimization of the process at the industrial level, even in open-loop operation. This paper aims at presenting a simple control strategy of froth depth and bias. Description of the sensors used to achieved measurements, preliminary pilot plant results for froth depth control, eventual industrial applications and possibilities for process optimization are also treated."

A molten metal granulator was designed and fabricated at the U.S. Dept. of Energy, Albany Research Center, for granulation of precious metal-bearing alloys and slags. The system was designed to safely granulate a metal alloy at a temperature of up to 1,600°C at a rate of roughly 50 kg of alloy per minute. The primary water jet was supplied by a 18.6-kW, 600 liter per minute pump which provided approximately 600 kg of water per minute through the primary jet. Two 3.7-kW, 150 liter per minute auxiliary pumps provided additional wash water to wet the granulation trough through 4 secondary jets, which were placed at either side of the primary jet. The water supply was closed-loop, including a 37,850-liter supply tank and 22,710-liter recovery tank. Magnetic separators and particulate filters were included for collection of the finest fraction of the granulation product, which cleaned the water sufficiently for continuous recycle.

In recent years, tunnelling activities in Singapore have increased considerably with the construction of extensions to the existing sub-surface transport system, a deep tunnel sewerage disposal system, and tunnels for the laying power cables and other utilities. These tunnels are excavated through urban areas, adjacent to high-rise buildings, depressed road structures, beneath other tunnels, and buried services. Earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) have been used extensively in Singapore with great success. The risk associated with soft ground tunnelling, including tunnelling through Old Alluvium, can be minimized with an understanding of the geology, geotechnical parameters, and the tunnelling-induced behaviour of Old Alluvium (OA The purpose of this paper is to present some design and construction aspects of EPB TBM tunnelling through Old Alluvium.
