"Heat-shrinkable cable accessories are solving problems in the mining industry. This paper describes a range of products used by the industry, including low-voltage splices, high-voltage splices to 8.7 k V, cable repair sleeves, mining cable terminations used on system voltages up to 25 kV and motor connection kits up to 8 k V. Technical procedures and designs are illustrated.IntroductionThe development of high-performance heat-shrinkable materials slightly over 20 years ago proved to be one of the major technological breakthroughs in power cable accessories. Heat-shrinkable products were introduced initially for use as low-volt age cable accessories in the aircraft and electronics industry. A program of continuous development and product introduction now enables the manufacturer to offer a broad range of products for mining, industrial and utility electrical systems.With the advent of atomic energy, an important discovery was made-exposure of some plastic materials to high-energy electrons can cause the permanent crosslinking, or intermolecular joining, of adjacent molecules. Once the material has been crosslinked, it will not melt or flow at any temperature.The unique properties of heat-shrinkable products also result from the exposure of special thermoplastic formulations to high-energy electrons. Because of crosslinking, these products have perfect elastic memory. The heat-shrinkable products are supplied in expanded condition. When heated, they will shrink and tightly cover the object over which they have been placed. 'The functional and operating demands of mine cable accessories exceeded the classic electronic applications of heat shrinkable materials. These demands required a very sophisticated program to develop materials and adhesive systems that could endure the operational environment associated with the mining industry,Ease of assembly, low installed cost and operational reliability are among the main reasons for the acceptance of heat-shrinkable mine cable accessories in electrically powered mines. For over a decade, these systems have been demonstrating proven performance."

"Pneumatic flotation was introduced to the Chilean copper mining industry in 1993 by Ingeniería de Minerales S.A., being implementation in 1994/95. The technology is based on the designs and development of Dr. Rainer Imhof from Germany and from Chilean copper processing experience.Pneumatic flotation has been successfully used for sulphide and oxide copper minerals and copper slag, iron ores (reverse flotation), gold and promising results with molybdenum as product. Extremely hard conditions were applied in flotation process such as roughing, cleaning, scavenging. Pneumatic flotation can be applied for any type of mineral which has to be separated by flotation. Even very dense and heavy slurries can be processed, the range of the particle sizes to be collected is very wide, and the number of cleaning stages needed normally is one in our experience until now.The good performance of the technique can be explained by the high gas hold-up and the very effective micro-turbulences which boosts the attachment to the bubbles changing dramatically the flotation time concept. Some economic high lights are: less energy consumption, less maintenance costs, simple and reliable to operate and it is required a small area to install the circuits.As a result of the Chilean mining industry experience, it can be concluded that the pneumatic flotation can be regarded as an excellent alternative to the conventional way of Mineral Processing.INTRODUCTIONDerived from seventies, works in Germany about pneumatic flotation with Prof. Simonis (Technical University of Berlin) and Prof. Bahr (Technical University of Clausthal), it has been developed an interesting flotation technology in Mineral Processing, with the designs developed by Dr. Rainer Imhof, who has been known for more than ten years (Imhof, 1998) by his contribution at Ekof, KHD, Allmineral and the actual company Maelgwyn Mineral Services where he is a Technical Director. Supply and Demand After a dismal first half, the industry saw a marked improvement in its markets during the final six months of 1983. Domestic consumption was 17.6% higher in the second half of the year, primarily due to a surge in electric power requirements. The sharp increase in demand for electric power during the third and fourth quarters afforded utilities the opportunity to lower stocks that had accumulated to record levels during 1982. Consumer stocks were reduced from 179 Mt (197 million st) at the end of June to 153 Mt (169 million st) by the end of the year. That is the largest inventory drawdown on record during a six-month period without a major coal strike. Despite the huge depletion in inventories, coal production in the second half of 1983 rose 1.3% above output in the second half of 1982. However, because of the disappointing first half, production in 1983 totaled only 712 Mt (785 million st), 6.4% less than the 760 Mt (838 million st) produced in 1982. Demand The extent to which the economic recovery affected coal markets in 1983 varied: • total domestic coal consumption increased 4.2%; • electric utility coal consumption increased 5.3%; • exports declined by about one-fourth; • coal consumption at coke plants declined 9.5%; and • coal consumption in the other industrial sectors increased 2.9%. Domestic coal consumption totaled 667 Mt (737 million st) it 1983, 27 Mt (30 million st) more than 1982. Electric utility consumption increased from 539 M1 (594 million st) in 1982 to 567 M1 (625 million st) in 1983. Coal consumption at coke plants declined from 37 Mt (41 million st) to 34 M1 (37 million st). Residential and commercial use increased 181 kt (200,000 st) - from 7.4 to 7.6 Mt (8.2 to 8.4 million st). Electric Utilities: Electric power generation increased 3.1% in 1983. Demand for electric power increased in all major consumer categories. Residential and commercial use rose 2.7% and 3.3%, respectively. The most striking increase, however, and indicative of the economy's strong upturn, was the increase in industrial electric power use. Industrial power requirements, which declined 9.8% in 1982, rose 4.1% in 1983. The nature of a stone deposit is rarely defined through exploration and engineering design, but more through the actual experience encountered as the mine develops; hence, issues with ground control are often at the forefront for a new mine. Ground control problems account for over 15 percent of lost-time injuries in underground stone mines. The objective of this work is to present actions taken during early development of a stone mine to mitigate the obvious effects of high horizontal stress on ground control. The mine was developed from a box cut with relatively little cover, and high horizontal stresses were not anticipated. Early recognition of possible high horizontal stress resulted in mapping of the mine using the NIOSH-developed Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) to provide a baseline to objectively analyze roof conditions. A program of borescoping the mine roof provided valuable roof beam thickness data and found that the roof beam was of minimal thickness, approximately 10 percent of drift width. As the mine developed, it became apparent that ground control problems related to high horizontal stress existed. A concentrated effort was made to improve ground conditions by implemeting a number of mitigation techniques. Actions taken by the mine included systematic roof support, reorientation of mining direction, a lower roof horizon, reduced span widths and reduced mining height in crosscuts to prevent running falls. These strategies resulted in signifcantly improved ground stability.

My comments and questions are addressed to Mr. Troughton. It seems to me that the tests were very well tailored to determine long term effects on performance of bearing piles as groundwater pressures rise in the London Basin. This rise is being simulated by means of a groundwater recharge system but it would be informative to have further details of the controls of conditions simulated. Ideally the porewater pressure in Standpipes 1, 2 and 3 should be the same throughout the test. Under test conditions are there not practical dif­ficulties? Recharge Well C2 is a lesser dis­tance from the pile than the other wells. Was the rate of recharge to C2 regulated to a lesser rate than the other three? In my experience the rate of acceptance usually varies from well to well. Under a common feed pressure were mea­sures taken to compensate for this? Since the problem does not only affect London, but also Liverpool, Nottingham, Birmingham and to a lesser extent, Manchester, I question whether an ideal procedure is being used. It is well known that rates of acceptance decrease with time and often recharge wells need to be flushed out at regular intervals. Other pro­cedures may need to be adopted to accurately simulate the effect of groundwater rise, if tests of longer duration are to be considered.

The rapid development of the Australian steel industry over the past twenty years has greatly increased the demand for coking coal from the collieries owned by the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. and Australian Iron & Steel Ltd. This in turn has called for an intensive and continuous programme of colliery expansion and new colliery development, along with the reorganization and modernization of existing collieries.This paper presents a general description of the factors involved and the techniques used in planning modern colliery development for the steel industry.PRELIMINARY GEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONSIn any colliery development, preliminary geological investigations require a detailed and practical knowledge of the geology and characteristics of the coal-field as a whole. Faced with rapid growth that strained their current water supply capabilities, the Somerset Water Service in Somerset, KY decided to construct a new intake structure on the shore of Lake Cumberland. With an existing intake structure within 200', very hard limestone geology with calcite geodes, and lake level fluctuations as high as 50 ' ,this project posed many challenges. The following paper discusses how mechanical excavation techniques were used to overcome these obstacles.

The dramatic rescue of nine Pennsylvania coal miners trapped nearly 90 m (300 ft) underground for77 hours probably would not have happened without the high technology equipment and improved mine rescue training techniques available today. By now, most everyone has heard the story of the accident that occurred at the Quecreek Mine near Somerset, PA. At about 9 pm on Wednesday, July 24, the miners were drilling coal in the room-and-pillar mine. Their drilling accidentally punched through to the adjacent, abandoned Saxman Mine. Old mine maps of the Saxman Mine led Black Wolf Coal, Quecreek’s owners, to believe they were between 60 to 90 m (200 to 300 m) away from the abandoned mine. Those maps proved to be inaccurate.

For the purpose of comparing the amounts of dust produced by various mining operations, samples of atmospheric dust were collected during a complete cycle of drilling, blasting and mucking at or near the face of the Bureau's Mount Weather testing adit while the efficiency of several types of stemming in metal-mine blasting was being investigated. The use of helical piles as a deep foundation option has considerably increased in the recent years to support a variety of loads, from small loads for several applications such as residential housing, solar farms, utilities and retrofit projects, to large loads for many applications such as commercial, power transmission lines, oil facilities and industrial applications. Therefore, it is necessary to qualify and quantify their axial capacities and performance characteristics. This paper presents the first full-scale axial compression and tension (uplift) testing program executed on large capacity helical piles installed in cohesionless soils. A total of eleven pile load tests using either single or double-helix piles with shaft diameters that varied between 324 mm to 508 mm (12¾ in to 20 in) were carried out, including seven axial compression tests and four tension (uplift) tests. The results of the axial compressive and tensile pile load tests as well as field monitoring data of helical piles installed in dense sand are presented in this paper. Based on the results of this study it was found that helical piles have developed significant resistance to axial compressive loads up to about 2920 kN (656 kips) and tensile loads up to 2900 kN (652 kips).

An evaluation of a pilot scale Delkor horizontal belt filter at Bellambi's South Bulli Colliery showed high productivities and low moisture contents for a range of feed slurries. When treating flotation concentrate, a productivity in excess of 1000 kg/m2/hr (dry) at a moisture content of less than 22 per cent was obtained. The results indicated the belt filter had a capacity twice that of conventional drum or disc filters, and was capable of dewatering a very fine, thickened, classifying cyclone overflow slurry to an acceptable moisture content. The superior performance of this filter is discussed in terms of the factors influencing cake formation and the stratification of solids in the filter bowl of a conventional rotary vacuum drum filter.

INTRODUCTION Two promising innovative tunnel support systems are being developed by the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Illinois. One of these is a lining which can be placed by a slipform located immediately behind and contiguous with a tunneling machine. Recent advancements in construction materials appear to provide the breakthrough required to make such a system feasible and practical. The lining material which permits this construction scheme is wire fiber reinforced concrete made with high, very early strength regulated-set cement. Parts I and II of this paper relate to this slipformed liner. Part I discusses the material and equipment required to install the liner. The "Extruded Liner System" (ELS) has been devised to place the lining. This ELS concept is briefly described and a tentative development program is outlined. In Part II, the physical properties and practical construction aspects of the liner material are discussed and a program for structural testing of 10-ft diameter prototype tunnel supports is presented. Part III contains descriptions of improvements to conventional steel-rib tunnel supports. It is shown that square tubular box sections are structurally superior to wide flange sections for complex loading conditions often encountered in rock tunnels. Analytical studies and tests on connections have been performed to evaluate their structural behavior. These are presented along with a program for comparative large-scale tests on horseshoe-shaped frames with a 10-foot span. This research is being conducted by the Department of Civil

U.S. Bureau of Mines research has found that maintenance of surface mining equipment is involved in slightly more than one-third (34.1 pct) of all surface mining accidents. Two groups of machines, haulage trucks and power shovels, accounted for over one-half of all surface mining mobile equipment maintenance accidents in 1978-84. Maintenance work-time histories for these machines were compared with accident records to identify the most hazardous-to-maintain systems within the machines. Recommendations to reduce the accident risk associated with maintenance of these hazardous systems are presented.

Northern Iron Ltd (NIL) is an Australian listed company that recently brought the historic Sydvaranger open pit Magnetite Mine (the Project) in Northern Norway successfully back into production. NIL made the decision to operate the Project on an owner mining basis, due to limited large scale mining expertise amongst Norwegian mining contractors, a long mine life, a limited range in planned mining rate and to minimise costs. As a new mine operator in a country where labour practices are strictly regulated, there was the desire to reduce the risk associated employing and managing skilled personnel. This was achieved by coupling the purchase of the required mining equipment from the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) regional dealers with OEM supported Maintenance and Repair Contracts (MARC). This paper examines the process that was followed to implement an owner mining operation in a short time frame; approximately 12 months from the initial requests for quotation to actual delivery of mining equipment to site, and some of the challenges faced. By following a formal and well-tested process, not only was the implementation achieved in the set time frame, but significant value was added through the cost savings achieved in the equipment purchase price and MARC rates that were negotiated through this process.

The quality of Lime Cement (L/C) columns is to a great extent dependent on the installation procedure. At a site in the south of Sweden, the client reported problems with the installed columns. To evaluate the operator and equipment dependent part of the installation, Hercules Grundläggning AB was appointed as a competitor to the site contractor. The purpose was to install a number of L/C columns with equal installation parameters for both contractors. A total of 65 test columns were installed in June 1999. The geology is a typical Swedish organic soil profile with a top layer of peat overlying gyttja and clay. Two different binders were used in the comparison; blast furnace slag with cement and lime with cement. After installation, the quality of the columns was monitored by penetration tests and a column sampler for extracting whole columns. The column penetration test were performed 28 and 134 days after installation and extraction 134 days after installation. Inspection and tests of the extracted columns showed that by using a fully computer controlled procedure, the contractor produces columns of superior quality and homogeneity.

The importance of the Broken Hill mining field may be gauged from the fact that since the discovery of the ore-body in 1883, till the end of 1931, approximately 43,000,000 tons of ore have been raised.The lode covers a length of 31 miles, and in places is upwards of 300 ft. in width. The ore, as at present mined, consists of an intimately blended mixture of lead and zinc sulphides with silver and gangue minerals.Structurally the lode conveys the impression of a huge longitudinal arch (when viewed from the east or west), having its apex or crown near the centre of the field, in the leases of the Broken, Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., where the lode outcropped at the surface.The minimum depth of the lode in the Proprietary mine was some 500 ft. from the surface, but huge undulations, having an average pitch of 45°, carry the extensions of the arch gradually deeper, to those places where active stoping operations are now in progress in the workings of the North mine at one extremity, and the South and Zinc Corporation mines at the other. The depth of the lode from the surface, as exposed at present, is approximately 1700 ft. at these extremities.The structure and physical character of the ore-body, and its containing walls, are so complex and varied that almost every type of mining problem is met with.

A new loading apparatus was fabricated and used to conduct true-triaxial compression tests on KTB amphibolite, a crystalline basement rock. Tests in dry jacketed samples reveal that the intermediate principal stress has a significant effect on the onset of dilatancy and on rock strength, contrary to the implicit assumption made by Mohr-type failure criteria. Failure is induced through a shear fracture that dips steeply in the direction of the least principal stress. Experimental results lead to a new generalized strength criterion in terms of all three principal stresses. Unjacketed KTB amphibolite specimens, exposed to confining fluid, are considerably weaker than the jacketed ones, despite the negligible porosity and permeability. Failure is facilitated by several closely spaced subparallel tensile cracks normal to the least stress direction. SEM analysis suggests that microcracks developed upon dilatancy onset are penetrated and extended by the confining fluid, bringing about the unexpected rock failure mechanism at reduced stress levels. Les essais effectués sur échantillons enveloppés et secs révèlent que les contraintes principales intermédiaires affectent considérablement le début de la dilatance et la résistance de la roche, contrairement à la supposition fondée sur le critère de rupture de Mohr. La rupture est produite grâce à une cassure de cisaillement très incliner en direction où la contrainte principale est moindre. Ces résultats expérimentaux indiquent un nouveau critère de rupture général en fonction des trois contraintes principales. Les échantillons de KTB amphibolites sans enveloppe, exposés à un liquide confiné, sont considérablement plus faibles que ceux enveloppés, malgré la porosité et la perméabilité négligeable. La rupture est facilitée par plusieurs fissures de traction adjacentes et sub-parallèles, normales à la plus petite contrainte principale. L’analyse SEM suggère que les micro-fissures développent suivant le début de la dilatance, elles sont pénétrées et agrandies par le liquide confiné, produisant un mécanisme de rupture de roche inattendu, ceci à un niveau de contrainte réduit. Messergebnisse führen zu einem neuen, verallgemeinerten Stärke Kriterium dass auf alle drei Hauptspannungen basiert ist. Unbedeckte KTB Amphibolit Proben, die unmittelbar den umgebenden Fluiden ausgesetzt sind, sind wesentlich schwächer als bedeckte, trotz geringfügiger Permeabilität und Porosität. Versagen wird gefördert durch mehrere, nebeneinander liegende, sub-parallele Spannungsbrüche, normal zu der geringsten Spannungsrichtung. SEM Analyse lässt vermuten dass Mikrobrüche, die sich beim Überschreiten der Dilatanzschwelle entwickeln, durch die umgebenden Fluiden fortgepflanzt und weiter verbreitet werden, und unerwartet, auf Grund der reduzierten Spannungswerte, den Versagungsmechanismus des Gesteins einleiten

In the last 30 years, human appropriation of global renewable resources has accelerated to the point where 35 per cent of the earthÆs land surface is now in managed agro-ecosystems, consumptive water use consumes between 50 per cent and 85 per cent of freshwater supply and 60 per cent of ecosystem services are utilised in an unsustainable manner. There are virtually no landscapes in which renewable resources are not already fully allocated among different economic and environmental uses. Furthermore, it is increasingly recognised that water availability issues do not exist in isolation but are linked with the related environmental issues of biodiversity preservation, the carbon cycle, soil degradation, and energy use and supply. It is against this background that the sustainable management of water in mining is increasingly developing a strategic viewpoint where water is viewed as a resource within an interconnected landscape, having economic, environmental and social value and providing a range of environmental services in the provision of public and private goods. This paper explores the issues associated with sustainable management of water in mining from a strategic viewpoint. The cumulative impacts of multiple water users, both within and outside the mining sector, is increasingly threatening the security of supply for all users. To quantitatively assess the ætrueÆ value of water it is necessary to: Better understand the science of ecosystem functioning and how human actions impact on environmental processes. Develop appropriate policy, finance and governance structures to support innovative programs that preserve ecosystem function and services (including market based instruments). Apply knowledge as interventions across landscapes in ways that maximise benefits and minimise unintended consequences taking into account differences in the value of water among sectors. A strategic viewpoint of water management relies on knowledge to guide decision making that has been acquired at a range of scales from mine site to mining region. This knowledge must be based on rigorous science, sound data and syntheses of different types of information. Strategic management of water resources will better position the industry in terms of understanding the risks posed by complex, interlinked environmental issues that are increasingly impacting on future access to land and renewable resources, including water, thereby ensuring miningÆs future social licence to operate.
