The objective of a mine planning exercise is to plan a safe mine that maximises net present value (NPV) for the project. Two primary elements are key to design of a mine plan optimised to maximise profit: selection of an optimised production rate and selection of an optimised equipment fleet. Both depend upon accurate estimations of capital and operating costs for the equipment and for the life cycle of the mining operation. Once a trial production rate is determined, a primary equipment fleet, ie excavators, haulers, and blasthole drills, can be determined based on material characteristics and haulage distances and gradients. An auxiliary fleet, dozers, road maintainers, service trucks, etc can be determined using less rigid productivity criteria. With an equipment fleet determined, operating and support personnel can be assigned based on shift requirements and equipment operating needs; and material and supply requirements can be estimated. Knowing the areal dimensions of the major equipment items, road widths and repair shop dimensions can be determined. Personnel numbers and supply requirements determine the square metre sizes of offices, change rooms, and storage facilities. Reliable sources of capital and operating unit prices and costs for all these items are referenced in the paper. Once preliminary capital and operating cost estimates are calculated by applying unit costs to equipment, personnel, material and supply needs, potential profit can be tested using DCF techniques. An optimised mine plan can then be determined by testing the potential profitability of multiple mine production rates. Because of the economies of scale, full capital and operating cost estimates must be completed for each production rate in order to produce meaningful comparisons.

Parts I and II in this series of papers presented the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper sulfide concentrates and reviewed the metallurgical development of a process to effectively recover copper using medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning (DEW). Key features of the process were the use of superfine grinding of the concentrate (to a P98 of 12 to 15 µm and P80 of 6 to 7 µm), pressure leaching at 160ºC and 1,380 kPa (200 psi) oxygen overpressure, DEW to produce LME Grade A cathode, recycling of the lean electrolyte to the pressure leaching step and treatment of a lean electrolyte bleed by solution extraction (SX). Recycling of the lean electrolyte provided all of the acid required to effectively dissolve copper and convert approximately 65% to 70% of the sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur, resulting in an ?acid-autogenous? process referred to as the ?MT-DEW-SX? process. This paper (Part III) discusses the steps taken to develop and complete a large-scale demonstration of the process at Bagdad, Arizona, in 2005.

In the extractive industry the term ‘continuous improvement’ (CI) usually means procurement of the latest state of the art equipment. This is generally perceived as the only way to add further value to the supply chain, with the driving philosophy of increased tonnage to dilute operational costs. However, not all market places can facilitate this approach. RJB lives in a fiercely competitive market and has targeted the standard efficiency drivers of rationalisation and stock management with a vengeance; and also operate CMMS (Computer Maintenance Management System), RCM (Routine Condition Monitoring)and CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) methodologies. Ultimately though, these systems are only as good as the people who operate and manage them and to add further value without procurement, people must be re-introduced back into the operation. Through TPM (Total Productive Mining), that is what RJB have set out to do.

A unique judicial opportunity allowed measurement of the response of three cracks in residential structure to blasting for underground aggregate mining. Instrumented cracks were located in the interior basement CMU mortar and upstairs dry wall as well as exterior brickwork. The dynamic environment was unusual. Even though the blasting occurred some 490 m (1600 ft) away, excitation frequencies were unusually high and there were no apparent surface waves. In addition there was no air overpressure wave to produce secondary crack response. As is typical, long term environmental effects produced greater crack response than did the blast induced ground motions.

Comminution and flotation circuits are frequently perturbed by disturbances, such as feed particle size variations, ore hardness and varying mineral liberation, which can have a significant impact on the recoveries and grades. Although advanced control strategies can neutralize many of these disturbances, few such systems have been implemented at present. One reason is that it is only recently that the requisite sensor systems have been developed and used to control froth flotation systems. Another is owed to the complexity of these non-linear interactive systems. In this paper, a plant-wide control strategy is considered, wherein both unit operations have a single overall control objective. The automated design of the controller is based on an advanced evolutionary algorithm viz., Symbiotic, Memetic Neuro-Evolution (SMNE), for developing neural network controllers in a reinforcement learning framework. A rigorous phenomenological comminution and flotation model was used to develop suitable neurocontrollers, which used all possible sensor inputs and available manipulated variables. The neurocontroller managed to identify optimal or near-optimal operating conditions consistently and showed robust performance in the presence of significant disturbances. The results suggest that evolutionary reinforcement learning offers a very competitive approach towards the development of integrated non-linear controllers for mineral processing plants. A discussion on simulation tools to aid the development of robotics platforms is presented. The focus of the work is towards mining robotics platforms where operations are typically in unstructured, unpredictable environments and a high degree of dependability in their operations is required. It is argued that a test-based development approach leads to more robust solutions and faster development cycles than traditional single-track field-only development and that the key enabling technology for this development paradigm is the judicious use of simulation tools. The future direction of simulation for use in online applications such as active planning and as a means to assist tele-operation in high latency communication applications is also brief y considered together with the requirements for a useful simulation environment in terms of the simulator architecture. Finally, a case study is presented on the application of the discussed methodologies to an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) for earth-moving tasks, which is being developed in an accelerated time frame with a transient development team.

The distribution or the userul minerals or Tasmania is so closely connected with the geological structure of the island that it will be convenient to briefly recapitulate the principal ract or its geological history, before describing the ore and other deposits. In many cases these present features which are very puzzling in the absence of knowledge of the structure of the districts in which they are found and in all cases it is of benefit to mining engineers to be acquainted with the main facts of the geological·history of the regions in which they have to carry on operations. Moreover, in speculating as to the origin of lodes and other deposits, we have constantly to rerer to the crumplings or the earth's crust by mountain-making movements, and to the igneous rocks which have been thrust throngh the other strata, to explain the origin or the lode fissures, and this discussion cannot be carried on without knowledge of local geology.The oldest rock yet met with in Tasmania are of Archooan age, and consist of highly crystalline quartzites and micaceous schist. They are most extensively developed towards the western side ot the island, forming a belt parallel to the West Coast from South-West Cape to Cradle fountain; but they also crop out here and there to the west and northward of this belt, where the covering strata or later age have been denuded away. Though not seen in situ in the eastern part of the colony, the abundance or pebbles derived from this formation in the conglomerates of the coal measures shows that it must in those day have formed land surfaces there also, and makes it likely that the archooan strata exist at no great depth: below many of the beds of later age now occupying the surface. Lying unconfortably upon these highly metamorphic strata we find next an extensive series of subcrystalline metamorphic conglomerates, grits, sandstones, slates, and limestones,of Cambro-Silurian age. These are well seen in the Gordou River Basin, along the West Coast Range, aloug the North Coast, and in the goldfields of the north-eastern portion of the colony. They are much broken by later intrusive rocks, and covered by younger rormations, but the series is spread more or less over the whole island.

Block caving methods, when operated under favourable rock mass conditions, can achieve higher production rates and lower operating costs than other various existing underground mining applications. For this reason, it has been considered the preferred method for the mining of deep and large orebodies in current and future operations around the world. One of the key aspects in the design of block caves is the selection of the production level layout, which, among other parameters, is based on the gravity flow characteristics of the caved rock. This is because gravity flow has a large impact on total ore recovery and the amount of dilution in a caving operation. Today, there are a number of computer based methods which aim to emulate the gravity flow pattern of the caved rock. In this paper, the authors present the development of FlowSiman improved model of gravity flow based on the cellular automaton approach, to estimate dilution entry, mixing and ore recovery. As part of the model development, flow simulations were conducted and subsequently compared to full-scale data collected at two mine sectors operated by Codelco Chile. The results indicate that by using proper calibrated parameters, good correlations between simulated and measured grades as well as dilution entry are obtained. The potential use of the numerical tool to evaluate drawpoint spacing in terms of recovery and dilution for block/panel caving operations is also presented.

"New, high-resolution geophysical surveys were undertaken over parts of the Abitibi Subprovince, Canada, to help with geological mapping and to promote mineral exploration. Gravity surveys in the Rouyn-Noranda and Matagami areas (Québec) allowed better 3-D mapping of important geological structures, and a multiscale edge analysis of ground gravity data over the Blake River Group confirms that major faults behave at depth as predicted by surface geology. Airborne gravimetry west of Matagami (Québec) helped to identify a new trend south of Lake Grasset that is almost perpendicular to the assumed geological trend of the area. Electromagnetic (EM) surveys, flown in the Chibougamau (Québec) and Bartlett Dome (Ontario) areas, allowed new conductors to be identified at greater depths than were achievable with previously used EM systems. Airborne magnetic surveys were flown in the Burntbush area (Ontario), and other available high-resolution magnetic data were compiled to produce a continuous and homogenous magnetic grid of the Abitibi region.The resulting compilation map clearly shows the locations of dikes, faults, and shears zones, and reveals some fault extensions in areas of extensive overburden. This grid also allows the computation of enhanced maps, such as vertical derivative and tilt maps (e.g., a tilt map shows subtle magnetic features in the Blake River Group that are difficult to see in the total magnetic field or its first derivative). Results from these new surveys show there is considerable value in (1) resurveying areas covered by older surveys, and (2) recompiling data sets from these older surveys."

Structures formed during ductile deformation have been reactivated during the later brittle mineralisation process. Two generations of folding are classified as: early recumbent megascopic FI folds and FI shears which transpose the hinge regions, and later upright F2 folds. S1 is folded about F2 folds which contain axial planar S2 crenulation cleavage. Vergence relationships between S1 and bedding indicate that many of the mineralised structures occupy sites of FI folds which have acted as plumbing systems for later gold mineralisation (eg Blackwater mine). The Globe-Progress gold mineralisation is localised by a major jog formed by sinistral strike-slip movement on two FI fault segments and mineralisation also occurs in smaller jogs along strike (eg Sir Francis Drake, Happy Valley-Merrijigs, Cumberland).   The lodes of ribbon quartz which exploit the FI shears and local bedding planes, are inferred to have mostly formed after the peak of metamorphism, possibly related to the emplacement of Carboniferous granites. This was followed by a sequence of vein deposition and wallrock alteration which consists of quartz-As/Fe sulphides ? carbonate - stibnite ¦ trace base metal sulphides and Bi-sulphosalts ? illitic clay/sericite-chlorite. Gold at Globe-Progress is mainly encapsulated in arsenopyrite. At Blackwater, free high fineness gold occurs in partings in lode quartz with late sericite-chlorite. The above sequence of events is comparable to that encountered in many intrusion-related gold systems throughout the Southwest Pacific region. There is a spatial relationship between gold mineralisation and dykes variably described as diabase, dolerite or lamprophyre. Alkaline rocks occur in many Pacific rim and older goldfields and may possibly be related to a magmatic source for gold mineralisation.

The Alimak mining method was introduced at the David Bell mine in 1998 to extract an otherwise uneconomic and inaccessible reserve. The success associated with the extraction of these reserves led to major expansion of the method. To date, results have been extremely positive in terms of grade control, reduced dilution, stope recoveries, productivities and mining costs. It is hoped that through further development of the method at David Bell mine we will continue to see positive results in these areas and be able to increase mineable reserves to include proven resources that do not currently meet the criteria of our current stoping plan.

"Systematic characterization of the mineralogy of massive sulfide ore deposits can provide valuable insights into ore genesis and metallurgical processing that would not be apparent otherwise. We describe a method wherein (1) normative mineral abundances are calculated from whole-rock chemical assays using an algorithm, (2) the results are cast in block models, (3) the results are then verified with automated image analysis of a subset of samples prepared as grain mounts by backscattered electron imaging and X-ray mapping on a scanning electron microscope, and (4) those verified results are integrated with textural data determined by optical microscopy.The technique is applied to the magmatic Ni-Cu-Co sulfides of the Ovoid orebody, based on geochemical assays of 3175 whole-rock samples. Three principal ore zones are defined in the Ovoid. Type I ore occurs in the center of the deposit; it is magnetite-rich and pyrrhotite-poor with intermediate contents of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Type II ore surrounds Type I ore and is pentlanditechalcopyrite- rich with intermediate contents of pyrrhotite and magnetite. Type III ore occurs at the base and along the outer periphery of the northern part of the orebody; it is pyrrhotite-rich and chalcopyrite- poor with an intermediate content of pentlandite, and a low-to-intermediate content of magnetite. La caractérisation systématique de la minéralogie des gîtes de sulfures massifs peut fournir des indications précieuses sur la genèse des minerais et le traitement métallurgique qui ne seraient pas disponibles par d’autres méthodes. Nous décrivons un procédé par lequel (1) un algorithme est utilisé pour calculer l’abondance de minéraux normatifs à partir d’analyses lithogéochimiques, (2) les résultats sont exprimés dans des blocs diagrammes, (3) les résultats sont par la suite validés par analyse d’image automatisée sur un microscope électronique à balayage en électrons rétrodiffusés et par cartographie en rayons X sur des échantillons constitués de grains montés en résine, et (4) les résultats de cette validation sont combinés aux données texturales obtenues par microscopie optique.Cette technique est appliquée aux sulfures magmatiques de Ni-Cu-Co du gisement Ovoïde, en utilisant les analyses géochimiques de 3175 échantillons de roche totale. L’Ovoïde comprend trois types de minerai. Le type I est situé au centre du gisement; il est riche en magnétite et pauvre en pyrrhotite avec des quantités intermédiaires de pentlandite et de chalcopyrite. Le minerai de type II entoure le minerai de type I et est riche en pentlandite et en chalcopyrite avec des quantités intermédiaires de pyrrhotite et de magnétite. Kinetic models are the most important tool for predicting and evaluating the performance of flotation circuits. Gilsonite is a natural fossil resource similar to an oil asphalt, high in asphaltenes. Here, in order to determine the kinetic order and flotation rate of a gilsonite sample, flotation experiments were carried out in both rougher and cleaner stages. Experiments were conducted using the combinations of oil–MIBC and gas oil–pine oil, with one test without collector and frother. Five kinetic models were applied to the data obtained from the flotation tests using MATLAB software. Statistical analysis showed that the results of the experiment with oil–MIBC were highly in compliance with all models. Kinetic constants (k) were calculated as 0.1548 (s−1 ) and 0.0450 (s−1 ) for rougher and cleaner stages, respectively. Rougher and cleaner tests without collector and frother also matched all models well (R2 > 0.98), with k values of 0.2163 (s−1 ) and 0.284 (s−1 ), respectively. The relationship between flotation rate constant, maximum combustible recovery, and particle size showed that the maximum flotation combustible recovery and flotation rate were obtained in the size range of −250 + 106 μm in the rougher and cleaner stages. The combustible recovery and flotation rate were higher in the rougher flotation process than in the cleaner stage.

The newly discovered South Arturo deposit is a Carlin-type, breccia-hosted, oxide gold deposit located on the Dee Mine property at the north end of the Carlin Trend in Nevada. The Dee Gold Mine was discovered in 1981 by Dee Delamar, a Cordex geologist. The property was put into production by Rayrock Mines in 1984. During its 16-year mine life, the Dee Mine produced about 18.6 t (600,000 oz) of gold from oxide ore at an average production rate of about 1.24 to 1.55 t/a (40,000 to 50,000 oz/year). In October 1997, Bar-rick Gold Exploration acquired the right to earn a 60-percent interest in the Dee property from Dee Gold Mines through an exploration farm-out agreement. Barrick Gold Exploration began exploration activities on the property in 1998 and vested in its 60 percent operating interest in 2004. However, the discovery hole at South Arturo was not drilled until July 2005 from atop the historic mine dumps located 300 m (985 ft) south of the Dee openpit. The discovery hole (BD-72) encountered a cumulative 75.6 m (248 ft) of oxide mineralization grading 1.9 g/t (0.055 oz/st) gold beneath 260 m (855 ft) of dump material and post mineral Tertiary Carlin Formation volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Oxidation within the deposit extends to depths greater than 610 m (2,000 ft). The deposit has passed the prefeasibility test and is presently in the feasibility stage. Exploration is on-going to enhance or enlarge the known deposit. The current resource for the deposit stands at 40.4 t (1.3 million oz) of gold. The South Arturo discovery is an example of an historic mining property yielding a new discovery through the diligent application of area selection criteria of the model type and persevering when early results were generally negative. Barrick?s original exploration pro-grams on the property were focused on the discovery of deep, high-grade sulfide deposits that would likely be mined by underground methods. As it turns out, South Arturo is mostly oxidized and will be amenable to mining by openpit methods

The exhaust system is a complex assembly of various components performing important tasks in harsh environments. Carbon steels have been used extensively in exhaust systems, but pressure for lower cost, increased fuel efficiency; lower hazardous emissions, weight savings and increased life expectancy have shifted the emphasis to stainless steels. In response to the growing consumption of stainless steels in automotive exhaust systems, the need to properly evaluate their corrosion resistance properties in order to ensure their appropriate use, has increased substantially. This paper evaluated the most common corrosion and oxidation tests developed that are used and applied it to four common stainless steels often employed in hot end exhaust components. In a summary considering the weight loss of an alloy, it general corrosion rate and pitting resistance under all the test conditions for hot end exhaust components, results indicate that 434 was by far the most corrosion resistant alloy, followed by 1.4509 and 321, and lastly 304 was the least corrosion resistant. In general, the ferritic stainless steels, especially 434, outperformed the austenitic ones under all the test conditions.

Flame cutting and welding is one of the major causes of fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines. On May 20, 2006, a flame cutting operation at the Darby Mine No. 1 led to an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. On January 22, 2003, another explosion caused by flame cutting at the McElroy Mine resulted in three fatalities and three serious injuries. On June 22, 1999, a flame cutting and welding operation at the Loveridge Mine caused a fire that resulted in sealing of the mine for an extended period. Finally, on March 19, 1992, an explosion at the Blacksville No. 1 Mine that was caused by welding resulted in four fatalities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study on fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines that were caused by flame cutting and welding operations to determine the root causes of these types of fires and explosions. The methodology included interviewing mining personnel who perform flame cutting or welding operations in underground U.S. coal mines and visiting mines to observe these operations, and MSHA reports of investigations and accidents statistics were analyzed. The results were used to identify and compare differences between flame cutting and welding practices and techniques in small and large mines, Eastern and Western mines, low seam and high seam mines, room and pillar and longwall mines, and between experienced miners and new miners. As a result of this study, best practices and interventions were developed to reduce the number of fires and explosions caused by flame cutting and welding. This paper provides a summary of this work. The paper describes the main drive systems of an iron ore pelletizing plant and related important design aspects. It is shown how today?s drive systems provide the desired flexibility for the process and lead to high energy efficiency and system reliability. With respect to electric drives expansion projects have many technical issues in common with green-field installations. However, there are aspects where important, distinct differences occur. It is shown which considerations for selecting and sizing drive systems for such a plant as well as for integrating them into an overall plant control concept need to be taken into account. Besides the design of the drive systems a key aspect for such an expansion project is the network interaction. Harmonics levels at different points in the plant network need to be checked carefully with simulations during the design phase to avoid problems later-on during operation. The power factor compensation and the harmonic filtering of the new production line cannot be designed independently of the already existing plant. The paper highlights areas where problems could occur and which points need to be paid attention to when a plant is expanded.

The abandoned Belle Eldridge Mine near Deadwood, South Dakota, is on land controlled by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. The mine produced primarily lead and zinc during the first half of the twentieth century. The BLM has expressed concern about acidic drainage as well as elevated arsenic levels in tailings and waste rock at the site. The mine site was evaluated for remediation in 1998 and 1999. Recent reclamation and remediation work included substantial regrading of waste rock, removal of material where metal loading were of concern, and re-routing of drainage from an adit. Trenching at the site shoed a greater volume than originally calculated during site characterization. Material was removed to a repository that was constructed at a nearby drainage divide. Because of physical hazards, the BLM has decided to remove some historic structures. However, a search of mine records and an inventory of archival materials were complete to preserve the history of the site.

Underground 802.11 wireless communications has become widely adopted for automation and communication purposes but maximizing the wireless signal presents many obstacles given the harsh environment as well as the presence of materials and conditions that can reduce signal propagation. Changes in elevations and curvatures in ramp to drift transitions also affect the wireless signal. Based on the requirements of wireless applications such as voice, data, or location tracking, the wireless site survey is the key tool for measuring and predicting signal strength and signal-to-noise ratio. These readings help determine the maximum distance between access points in order to sustain an overlapping wireless signal where required. This paper describes the methodology and tools used for measuring 802.11 wireless signal strength in an underground mine environment in Northern Ontario. The physical characteristics of the mine and the actual recorded wireless signal data will be presented in order for the audience to gain an understanding of the factors that affect signal throughput. Antenna selection used for the site survey will also be discussed as it played a key role in propagating the wireless signal.
