The use of diesel engine locomotives in South African mines can be traced to Van Dyk Consolidated Mines Ltd on the Witwatersrand gold mines in 1928 as a replacement for battery locomotives. The advantages and disadvantages were recognized in those days, and surprisingly, there are no significant additions to this list, but only refinements. In the absence of any Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) for Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in SA, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (USA) rule is currently being used as a benchmark for the ventilation engineering designs. This paper discusses the ongoing SA journey of measurement and limitations of exposure data for ventilation planning and regulatory purposes. The currently accepted DPM limits are based upon the belief that they are economically and technically feasible for the mines to reach and are not necessarily health based. For SA underground platinum mines, a median TC/EC ratio of 1.8 with a range of 1.2 to 5.8 was observed. For SA coal mines, a median TC/EC ratio of 1.44 with a range of 1.25 to 2.13 was observed. While it is common practice in the USA to use the ratio of TC/EC for metal mines to be 1.3, the ratio found in local platinum mines is 2.2 and for coal mines, the ratio was 1.53 which is lower than Australian studies, i.e., 1.96. It has been shown that a need for critical analysis of TC/EC ratios exists, and possible reasons for variance must be understood before stringent adoption of overseas recommended limits for DPM. It is hoped that the findings from this paper would provide input to scientific approaches in developing appropriate conversion factors, limits for DPM and also in ensuring appropriate error factors (currently 1.14 for TC and 1.2 for EC) for compliance determination.

In many industries, the applications result in productivity improvement and energy savings. Plant specific examples include operating experience and benefits realized in sorting, blending and beneficiation processes. Instruments of the future not only measure specific parameters of the process and monitor its own health combined with self-corrective mechanics but also acts with intelligence to effect the quality of the process or regulate the primary apparatus.

The technology of making and using ?paste? from mine tailings is increasingly well known by the minerals industry. The primary applications are water recovery and ?stacking? of tailings with minimal use of dams and ponds. This paper highlights some applications, other than water recovery and stacking, that have come to the attention of a paste thickener equipment supplier. As generated by thickeners, paste (also called ?thickened tailings?) is a non-settling, relatively high concentration, suspension of solids that can be pumped. Paste deposits with an angle of repose, allowing minimal use of dams. High solids concentration allows more water recovery at the paste thickener than is achieved in conventional and high rate slurry tailings thickeners. This paper is based on paste as produced in a flow sheet that includes a thickener, underflow pumps that are typically centrifugal, transfer pumps that can be centrifugal or positive displacement, and a distribution system at the deposition site. Examples of paste applications other than water recovery or stacking include: ?mine? an existing tailings pond by removing slurry, recovering coal or iron ore values, and return the new tailings to the pond as a paste that does not res-suspend; use paste to seal an existing tailings pond from leaking to groundwater or to an underground mine; extend the life of an existing tailings pond by thickening the tailings to paste; move an existing dry tailings impoundment to a new location by slurrying, pumping, paste thickening, and redeposit; minimize the size of a filter by paste thickening the feed; operate a paste thickener and filter in parallel on a tailings stream with re-mixing to achieve a high solids concentration. The use of paste tailings technology has been expanding over the last 15 years. The applications, both implemented and under consideration, are increasingly diverse and include all minerals tailings. Tailings handling designers should always consider a paste option to the conventional slurry solution.

P&H MinePro Services Canada is supplying Syncrude Canada three more of its model4100BOSS electric mining shovels. The shovels will be delivered during 2003. Syncrude’s oil sands operations already use five P&H shovels. The first 4100BOSS shovel was commissioned at Syncrude’s operation in northern Alberta, Canada in October 2001. The unit loads more than 9 kt/hr (10,000 stph) of unblasted oil sands. Since it began operation, the 4100BOSS has shown a 28% production increase over the four P&H 4100TS shovels also on site.

"Pure sands are typically the domain of slurry shields due to their high permeability and their granular characteristics. However, the Earth Pressure Balanced (EPB) shield machine technology has advanced in recent years with improved conditioning agents and shield machines that are equipped with slurry injection facilities and alternative mucking methods. These new so-called hybrid EPB machines have steadily increased the range of application of the EPB technology. The contribution discusses the capacities and operational features of hybrid EPB vs. slurry shield technology in pure sands. At the example of the Metro Line 4 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the contribution shows that hybrid EPB tunneling in pure sands is possible and it is compared with a state-of-the-art slurry shield project as the KASIG project in Karlsruhe (Germany). Furthermore, the control of the support pressure by means of foam conditioning and slurry injection in conjunction with a close, real-time monitoring of machine parameters is discussed. INTRODUCTION Slurry shield and EPB technologies have both undergone significant developments in recent years, leading to the use of parts of one technology in the other and even to completely hybrid systems. Also the ranges of application (see recommendations by DAUB (DAUB 2010)) of both technologies have been shifted far beyond their original limits and are largely overlapping by now. Nevertheless, the basic principles of face support remain unchanged. Exploiting the possibilities of process data analysis (Maidl 2014), the interactions between the ground and the shield machine are a matter of research and have been intensely investigated. PRINCIPLES AND CALCULATION OF FACE SUPPORT PRESSURE Figure 1 shows the principles of two approaches for the determination of required support pressures: kinematic methods and numerical methods. Kinematic methods that are employed for the assessment of face stability only consider the situation in front of the TBM. The required face support force is determined by means of an assumed failure wedge that would form in ultimate limit state. Based on the ground properties, the vertical surcharge and the self-weight is transformed into a horizontal force along a virtual sliding surface. This horizontal force is to be balanced by the face support. The calculation results are amended by respective partial safety factors for water and earth pressure and the method-specific support pressure fluctuations are added."

Employee safety and health is of paramount importance for SME and its members. Many SME members work daily in our Nation's mines or have a direct impact on others that work in the mines. SME supports the mission and purpose of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), which is to prevent all injuries and disease from mining and to promote safe and healthful workplaces for the Nation's miners. SME supports the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and university research geared toward prevention of all occupational injuries and illnesses. SME maintains that laws and regulations governing the mining industry need to be based on sound scientific principles to ensure that workplace solutions can be readily implemented and that solutions to safety and health problems are fully realized.

In decision making support system, that are used in various fields of environmental protection (environmental impact assessment, environmental management systems, setting environmental standards and regulation, etc.), it is often important to apply various mathematical environmental engineering models. The question of linking environmetal engineering modeling to decision making support system used in environmental protection is not yet methodically solved. The reasons for that could be manifold. Decison making support systems, used in environmental protection, because they are simply taken from bussines decision making, are not often adequate for specific problems raised in environmental protection. On the other hand, there are great number of types of models in environmental engineering, what urges the problem of finding the way of their proper linking with decision making support systems. The application of fuzzy logic in that field is estimated as one of possible solution of the problem.

This Tunnel Connection project will include construction of two short tunnels to connect the existing subway tunnels (Red and Blue lines) in the northern loop area of downtown Chicago through a new station. The Southeast Tunnel will connect the Red Line to the new station below the intersection of State and Washington Streets and the Northwest Tunnel will connect the Blue Line to the new station below the intersection of Dearborn and Randolph Streets. The connection tunnels are located in a very dense urban area of downtown Chicago and under several important historical buildings. Both tunnels are curved at the intersections and located at a depth of about 7.5 m below ground surface in saturated soft clay with an average undrained shear strength of approximately 25 kPa. The design calls for minimizing surface disruption and ground displacement while maintaining normal operation of the existing subways during the construction of the connections tunnels. This paper presents mining and cut and cover tunneling alternatives for the project.

INTRODUCTION This paper is the outgrowth of work done by the authors to prepare the seismic design criteria for underground structures on the Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) Metro Rail Project. It is a follow-on to a similar paper presented at the October, 1984, ASCE National Convention (17). For design, the earthquake-induced distortions recommended herein are to be added to the normal static loading conditions for the underground structure. This design approach has been used by 18 section designers on the SCRTD Project. Preliminary results from two- and three-dimensional finite element solutions have partially verified the approach. Areas where additional research is needed for special cases are identified. EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE The effects of earthquakes on underground structures may be broadly grouped into two general classes -shaking and faulting. In response to earthquake motion of bedrock (shaking) , the soil transmits energy by waves. Seismologists identify various types of earthquake waves, but underground engineers are generally interested in the effects of transverse shear waves which produce a displacement of the ground transverse to the axis of wave propagation. Underground heat issues are mainly focused on the detrimental effects to a workers health. However, working in hot, humid conditions has other negative effects. Studies have shown that safety, productivity, workforce morale and operating cost are also worsened in these conditions. The human body has several mechanisms for rejecting heat and remaining cool. However, once the air temperature exceeds about 34°C, the only effective mechanism is by evaporation of sweat from the skin. This is assisted by acclimatisation which is the human body?s enhanced ability to combat extended exposure to heat. The body has to remain well hydrated when working in heat as even small degrees of dehydration cause significant decreases in the ability to work in heat. There are two ways in which heat load can be reduced: Through use of refrigeration/vent/cooling to reduce thermal stress on workers; Reduce the contribution that heat sources have to underground heat load (e.g. reduce idle time, fleet size, etc). Some of the sources of underground heat have the potential to be more manageable than others. Geothermal heat and heat from autocompression will be found in all mining situations in varying degrees depending on geothermal gradient and surface temperature, however, the use of equipment and blasting may be streamlined to reduce the underground heat load. It is through a combination of the available options that most mines will successfully control their heat related problems. Mt Isa, which has been a focus for heat related study in Australia, has successfully implemented protocols for working in heat. Through combining these with the installation of a surface bulk air cooling plant, Mt Isa has consistently reduced the incidence of heat illness. This is likely to be the most cost effective method of reducing heat load for deep mines in Australia. Shallower mines which may only occasionally encounter hot conditions should consider more portable cooling options. This study will review the heat issues in underground Australian metalliferous mines.

The iron nugget process is an economical, environmentally friendly, cokeless, single-step pig iron making process. Residence time dependent process requirements for production of pig iron nuggets at a fixed furnace temperature (1425 C) were investigated. Three chemically and physically different products were produced after complete reduction to iron, depending on the residence time in the furnace. These products were direct reduced iron (DRI), transition direct reduced iron (TDRI), and pig iron nuggets (PIN). The increase in the carbon content of the system as a function of residence time was detected by optical microscopy and Microhardness measurements. Sufficient carbon dissolution for the production of pig iron nuggets was obtained after 40 minutes residence time. The pig iron nuggets produced had chemical and physical properties similar to blast furnace pig iron. They were liquid state products and slag was completely separated from the metal.

This paper addresses the challenges of designing the underpinning of major sub-way station with 4 operating tracks. No. 7 subway extension crosses under the existing 42nd street subway station on the 8th Avenue line. Understanding the history of the original construction, of the current structures and their condition were instrumental in developing a feasible underpinning design that is integrated with the design of the new tunnels. The existing 8th Avenue subway station has a lower abandoned level. Several alignments and corresponding underpinning schemes were studied. The design allows new tunnel construction under the station without interruption of station operations.

The estimated value of natural gemstones produced from U.S. deposits during 2004 was $12.9 million. This was a 3-percent increase from that of 2003. U.S. gemstone production included agates, amber, beryl, coral, garnet, jade, jasper, opal, pearl, quartz, sapphire, shell, topaz, tourmaline, turquoise and other gem materials. More than 60 varieties of gemstones have been produced commercially from U.S. mines. But commercial mining of gemstones has never been extensively undertaken in the United States. Most of the deposits have been relatively small compared with other mining operations. In the United States, much of the current gemstone mining is conducted by collectors, gem clubs and hobbyists rather than business organizations.

In December of 2007, a joint venture of J.F Shea, Skanska and Schiavone referred to as S-3II, was awarded a $1.15 billion (? 886,880,000) contract to construct the run-ning tunnels and station structures for the Number 7 Line Extension Project in New York City by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction (MTACC) and New York City Transit (NYCT). As part of the contract, a technically complex and critical connection of the new tunnel to the existing, operational 7 Line subway was required. This paper describes the innovative design approach that was conceived to carry out the underpinning and excavation works both within the east-west 7 Line subway tunnel and beneath the north-south, 4 track, 2 level Times Square Station for the A, C & E trains. This underpinning provided temporary support to the subway substructure as the grade of the tunnel invert was lowered up to 10 feet (3 meters) into the rock sub-grade to allow the future subway to pass under the basement of the world?s busiest bus terminal. In addition, the creation of a new portal connecting the existing subway tunnel and the subterranean level of the Port Authority Bus Terminal by means of underpinning structural footings and horizontal spiling/poling of existing ground will be discussed.

The 2003 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the New Orleans Marriott, New Orleans, LA, June 15-18. The New Orleans conference was the 16th since the RETC was formed in 1971. This year’s conference was sponsored by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc.(SME), with co-sponsorship of the Construction Institute of ASCE. Attendance at the meeting was 1,178, a conference record. This was up significantly from the771 attendees at the 2001 meeting in San Diego, CA. The RETC was formed to “advance the engineering and scientific knowledge of rapid underground excavation and tunneling through interdisciplinary meetings, publications, technical-educational exhibitions and encouragement of research.” The RETC conferences are now held every other year. They provide an opportunity for individuals to meet with designers, contractors and manufacturers associated with the tunneling industry to share experiences in all phases of tunnel design and construction.

The choice of ventilation schemes in the Northern Mujsky railway tunnel and definition of the nec-essary quantities of air ensuring regulated radiation conditions in the tunnel system has been accomplished. The influence of natural draught on the stability of tunnel ventilation has been estimated. The design of a portal venti-lation gate allowing minimal influence from natural factors is described. The dependence of pressure loss in the sliding ventilation gates on their spanning value of the vehicle tunnel section has been determined. The selection of parameters for an atmospheric air heating system in winter has been carried out. The operation regimes of air heaters, dependent on the temperature of atmospheric air, have been established.

How does SME-AIME cope with profound changes in technology, markets - and most importantly - in employment patterns facing its membership today? This is the question that prompted the Society's Board of Directors to appoint a Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) (see ME, Feb. 1984, pp. 118 and 128). This is also the question addressed most particularly by the LRPC's Scope Committee. The Committee started its deliberations by asking such basic questions as "Who are we?" and "What is our business?" The Scope Committee then reviewed the findings and recommendations of other more specialized committees to develop and integrate their concepts of the Society's business for the next 10 years. The policy-making suggestions of the LRPC were reviewed and acted upon by the Board of Directors at its open meeting in Los Angeles on Feb. 26, 1984. At the Oct. 23-26, 1984 SME Fall Meeting in Denver, the Board will again review LRPC recommendations. In answer to the question "Who are we?" the Scope Committee proposed description, which was accepted by vote of the board of directors: . . A technical and professional organization that consists of individual members, namely those mining engineers, metallurgists, geologists, earth scientists, economists, managers, educators, and other professionals concerned with all facets of exploration, production, distribution, and using of mineral commodities. "These mineral commodities include all metals; industrial minerals, including construction materials and fertilizers; coal, oil shales, tar sands, and other mined fuels. Among the earth's mineral resources, only wellpumped oil and gas lie outside the Society's specific purview. "Traditionally, SME members work in the fields of engineering, technology, exploration and discovery, development, construction, mining, quarrying, beneficiation and processing, handling and transport, equipment manufacturing, sales and marketing, data processing, safety, land reclamation, environmental protection, taxation, administration, and management of these elements. "Members practice their professions in industry, in universities and research institutions, and in government. They may be operators, manufacturers, sales persons, contractors, consultants, analysts, researchers, educators, advisors, regulators, or members of supporting staffs. "The members of the Society are leaders in dedication to their crafts, in innovation, and in the pursuit of excellence. Among their numbers they count the most distinguished of engineers, applied scientists, and managers. "The Society is based in the United States, is active on a worldwide basis, and is open to nationals of any country. Certain qualifications must be met for attaining and maintaining membership." Purpose of the Society As to the question "What is our business?" the Scope Committee restated our purpose in light of current practice and the constitution of AIME and the bylaws of AIME and SME. The Board of Directors accepted the following proposed purpose of SME: "To further the professional development and well-being of its members by publishing and distributing technical writings, news, and information; by sponsoring meetings of members; by providing forums for discussions and for continuing education; and by fostering communication on the subjects within its purview. Significant effort was made in 2003 and 2004 to upgrade the existing instrumentation and process control infrastructure at the Phelps Dodge Bagdad copper concentrator. Specifically, • cameras were installed on the feed belt for online image analysis data, • ultrasonic level sensors were installed for froth height and sump level control, • a trial froth image system was installed on one of the rougher rows, and • a new expert system to tie everything together was integrated and tuned in-house. Control philosophy, observations, opinions, and general tips and tricks are discussed with the hope of assisting other plant personnel and expert system integrators.

INTRODUCTION Project Description The Silver Line is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line and is Boston?s newest transit service. Silver Line Phase I extends along Washington Street entirely on the surface in priority bus lanes from Dudley Station in Roxbury through the South End and Chinatown neighborhoods to downtown Boston. The Phase I opened in July 2002. Silver Line Phase II consists of an underground transit tunnel from South Station to the South Boston Waterfront with underground stations at Courthouse and World Trade Center to Silver Line Way east of D Street. Phase II continues through the Ted Williams Tunnel to all the terminals at Logan Airport, and on the surface to the Boston Marine Industrial Park and City Point. Phase II opened in December 2004. Silver Line Phase III is a one mile tunnel connection to the existing Phase II tunnel in the vicinity of South Station and will eventually portal on Tremont Street just north of Marginal Road. After leaving the portal, the buses will use dedicated bus only lanes on the surface roadway network to connect to the Phase I service. Figure 1 shows the alignment of the Silver Line upon completion of the Phase III project.
