he need in the mineral industry to treat increasingly larger tonnages has caused a demand for larger installations. In order to limit the size of these installations, it was necessary to build machines with larger capacities or production output. With this aim in mind, WEMCO Division developed the No. 120 WEMCO-Fagergren Flotation Cell in 1967. These large cells have been compared to conventional smaller cells from the standpoint of metallurgical performance, investment costs, power requirements and maintenance requirements in many plants throughout the world. Figure 1 illustrates the size difference of the No. 120 when compared with the No. 66. All results to date indicate the large No. 120 cell surpasses the smaller machines in all categories.

I would like to start this paper by looking back about twenty years to see where we have been in the mining industry. We will also look forward a bit and talk about what lies ahead. Here is what has happened to the world economy since the 1970s. Economic growth was strong in the early 70s, but slipped into a recession in the middle of the decade. Then, after a fairly decent recovery recession struck again in the early 80s and since then growth has been rather sporadic. All in all, it has been a real roller coaster ride. There will continue to be plenty of ups and downs in the world economy in the future.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been researching refuge alternatives (RAs) since 2007. Refuge alternatives typically have built-in pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent the unit from reaching unsafe pressures. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires that the PRVs vent the chamber at a maximum pressure of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi, 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer. To facilitate PRV testing, an instrumented benchtop test fixture was developed using an off-the-shelf centrifugal blower and ductwork. Relief pressures and flow characteristics were measured for three units: a modified PVC check valve, an off-the-shelf brass/cast iron butterfly check valve, and a commercially available valve that was designed specifically for one manufacturer’s steel pre-fabricated RA and has been adapted for use in built-in-place (BIP) RAs located at one mine. PRVs used in tent style RAs were not investigated. The units were tested with different modifications and configurations in order to check compliance with 30 CFR regulations. BACKGROUND The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (Miner Act) (1) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement. Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines, and the Department of Labor to act on the results of such research as appropriate. These mandates culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency RAs and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either self-contained mobile units or built-in-place (BIP) facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (specified as 0.18 psi, or approximately 5.0 in H2O), or at a pressure as specified by the RA manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA (2)."

Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of generally accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.

The structure, properties, and composition of commercial chelating-type copper extractants are examined. Characterization of these extractants was accomplished using organic separation techniques and analytical tools such as NMR and IR. Results indicate that only the trans isomer of the diphenylhydroxyoxime (LIX (R) 64N) is capable of copper chelation. The effect of the structural modification of the extractants on the extraction and stripping reactions are discussed.

Cerro de Pasco Corporation operates five large base metal mines in Peru having a combined production of some three million tons of ore a year. An integrated complex of concentrators, smelters and refineries produces annually about 25,600 short tons of copper, 48,100 short tons of lead, 60,500 short tons of zinc metal, 102,300 short tons of zinc concentrate, 8,272,000 ounces of silver and substantial amounts of bismuth, cadmium and selenium. Geology plays an important role in these operations. The organization of detail geologic work in and around the Cerro mines was set up by John M. Boutwell in 1918 and a geology department was established in 1920. Growing through the years, the department technical staff now numbers over thirty men and. their work covers all phases of geological investigations. Many outstanding geologists of the past and present, too numerous to name here, have studied and contributed to the knowledge of the deposits and the ever growing list of Cerro "alumni" must rival that of any other mining organization. Numerous papers on the geology of Cerro's mines can be found in the technical literature and several doctoral theses have been presented on Cerro subjects as indicated in the attached bibliography, Specimens of Cerro's ores can be found in museum, college and university collections throughout the world. Yet, as with all mines and mining districts, the geologic knowledge of Cerro's deposits in Peru is being revised and added to constantly. This presentation cannot hope to cover adequately all the phases of the geology and mineralization. For a more complete background and discussion of the mine you are referred to the bibliography. Here I shall outline only briefly the more important geologic features and describe some of the newer developments of recent years The credit for the data presented here belongs to the many geologists who have worked or are now working for Cerro de Pasco Corporation, but I must assume sole responsibility for any omissions or variations in the interpretation of their work.

By using management information systems to coordinate support operations, the most productive planning decisions can be made. This paper focuses on the role of computer technology tools in achieving improved productivity from both longwall and continuous miner sections. The primary emphasis is on the planning process and the methodology developed to guarantee the best allocation of management and manpower resources.

In this study, with the primary goal of capturing ongoing digital transformation and automation impacts on the mining industry and its workforce, we conduct several interviews with mining industry experts in the United States and analyze our survey reports qualitatively and quantitatively through exploratory analysis. After the interpretation of the insights of industry experts, we proceed to generate a personalized and customized data analysis through a novel metric based on skills, knowledge, competencies and occupational requirements, which quantifies the job similarities for occupations in the mining industry based on the publicly available database of the U.S. Department of Labor. We use text analytics to tokenize and classify the interviews to capture a better understanding of major response categories. The temporal analysis shows that the critical competency needs in the data science and autonomy category increases from 28 percent in current demands to 43 percent. In defining our metric, we also calculate Kullback–Leibler (KL) divergence for each job profile that enables determining whether and to what extent that job is transitionary in our test set based on the mean, standard deviation and kurtosis of each job of interest. Our analysis reveals that the in-group job transitions are significantly easier than the between-group transitions, proving our initial assumptions and common sense. The generated heat maps provide the opportunity to present the gap between the current job and desired job profiles that provide feasible career change options, among others, offering individualized career paths for job seekers and promoting potential job transitions. Through the collection of industry-specific individual employee data, the AI system is envisaged to continue to learn as end users engage with the system, thus creating a central data hub specifically for the future workforce in the mining industry. Although the study has limitations on generalizability for qualitative assessments, it presents itself as a valuable application of how qualitative and quantitative approaches could be of value for future worker training in the mining sector.

In-situ leaching, initiated in 1986 at San manual, was economically developed in 1989. The primary reason for this lag time between startup and viable production was the time required for technical development. The technical development pursued comprised detailed design, development, and implementation of in-situ well construction methods, formulation of suitable well pattern arrays, and the development of extensive hydrogeologic and geochemical knowledge of the mineral deposit. Since 1989, the in-situ leaching program has become a viable and cost effective method to extract copper from the supergene mineralized zone of the San Manuel deposit. The in-situ leaching methods that are currently utilized have been progressively expanded and continually developed and will became the cornerstone of copper production from the San Manuel oxide mineral deposit. This paper presents an overview of the supergene hydrogeology, current design techniques, drilling methods and well completion, pump determination and setting, solution management, and future plans for the increased extraction of copper by in-situ leaching methods at the San Manuel mine.

Blending inevitably occurs to some degree during mining and mineral processing operations. Traditional mine scheduling assumes that all variables average linearly, which allows the calculation of the blended material properties as a linear weighted average. However, metallurgical properties such as metal recovery and Bond Work Index (BWI) are known to average nonlinearly. The nonlinear properties of the blended material can be calculated using nonlinear blending models. A simulated annealing algorithm is developed and applied to a short‐term mining face optimization problem to maximize the total metal recovered considering nonlinear blending. Compared to a standard schedule plan, the optimized one shows relevant improvements in synergistic and antagonistic blending behaviors.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop safe practices for the use of shotcrete as ground support in underground mines, particularly mines operating in weak host rock. As part of this research, tests were conducted with a commercial poly-fiber reinforced shotcrete mix to develop a practical means of measuring shotcrete adhesion strength. Full-scale tests were conducted in a test frame equipped with concrete panels having three distinct surface roughness profiles. Adhesion test fixtures either embedded or epoxied in the shotcrete were overcored into the underlying concrete, and direct tensile tests were conducted to determine the bond strength of the shotcrete cores to the substrate after a selected shotcrete curing interval (1, 3, 7, 14, 28, or 90 days). Measured adhesion strengths typically ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 MPa depending on the curing age of the shotcrete samples. This paper presents the results of these tests, describes the portable test system components, and addresses some of the design issues encountered in the development of a rugged and reliable method for determining shotcrete adhesion strength in underground mines.

INTRODUCTION Iron is the world's most widely used metal and constitutes about 5% of the earth's crust. Iron ores are found widely distributed throughout the world. Because of its wide occurrence and relatively low value, an iron ore to be merchantable must contain a relatively high percentage of the metal to be considered as a source of iron. Few ores containing less than 25% iron would be considered as ore unless they existed in large amounts and could be concentrated very cheaply. The grade of the ore, the ease of concentration, and the transportation cost to market are fundamental considerations deter- mining its worth. Iron never occurs as a natural metal except in meteorites. Most iron ores occur as oxides, and to a lesser degree as carbonates. A small amount is recovered as a byproduct from iron sulfides. Iron ore must be reduced (oxygen removed) to metal for use. Iron is marketed in many forms and combinations, such as pig iron and a great variety of steels. Iron is practically never pure as marketed but contains varying amounts of carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, and alloying elements such as nickel, chromium, etc., all of which affect the physical proper- ties of the end product. Please note that in this section all analyses ore on a dry basis and all tonnage figures are on a long-ton basis of 2,240 lb unless otherwise noted.

An overview is provided of Franklin Industrial Minerals mica mine and plant operations located near Velarde, New Mexico. Operated by Franklin Industrial Minerals since July of 1990, several process and product modifications have been developed and instituted to improve the operation. In addition to a brief history of site operations, descriptions of the mining, beneficiation, delamination grinding, and product classification processes are reviewed. Supportive topics discussed include equipment modifications and improvements, product application diversification, and specific product characterization. Also reviewed are the key areas of safety, environmental responsibility, and programs pertaining to process quality control and product quality assurance.

[According to the Young equation, SG = SL + Coso, the equilibrium contact angle depends on the values of the three interfacial tensions involved. A solute promotes wetting, i. e. a decrease of contact angle if it decreases.LG and/or YSL or if it increases SG. Dewetting, the important step in flotation is, promoted if the solute increases y and/or SL or decreases. Most solutes used for wetting or dewetting are, positively adsorbed at all interfaces involved and consequently according to the Gibbs equation lower the interfacial tensions. Wetting is therefore expected to occur if LG and SL are more affected by the solute than SG. Dewetting on the other, hand demands a greater decrease of SG than that of SL (and of LG). See P. We at Colowyo would like to thank you for the opportunity to share with the Society of Mining Engineers of A.I.M.E. the progress of reclamation at Colowyo Coal Company's multiple seam open pit coal mine which is a general partnership of W.R. Grace and Co., and the Hanna Mining Co. First, a brief history of Colowyo Coal Company (Colowyo). The Colowyo operation is located approximately 28 miles southwest of Craig, Colorado, which is in the northwest corner of the state. The Colowyo operation produces coal from a Federal Coal Lease, a portion of which has experienced previous coal mining by underground methods. The underground coal mines were known as the Red Wing Mine and The Streeter Mine, and supplied coal to numerous locations in the Rocky Mountain region.

"The Station “C13” of Warsaw Underground Line II, with tunnel crown 10m below the water table, required the excavation of three connection tunnels, underpassing a six-lane in service road tunnel, working from two lateral shafts. After the collapse occurred while digging the first tunnel, the use of artificial ground freezing was chosen to ensure the excavation under safe conditions. A complex freezing pipe geometry and excavation sequencing was necessary because of the interferences of the overlying road tunnel diaphragm wall foundations, shaft internal structures and previous grouting activities. A combined freezing method was used: nitrogen for freezing the tunnel arches, brine for freezing the intermediate wall and for maintenance stages. Sandy and silty sandy layers were frozen around the crowns and sides. No treatment was necessary for the inverts, lying in clay. A monitoring system of ground temperatures and structure movements allowed for successful completion of work in 8 months. INTRODUCTION The C13 Station of the Warsaw Underground-Line II is located on the West bank of the Vistula River. It consists of two shafts and three connecting tunnels, passing under the Wislostrada (WS) Road tunnel. According to the initial geotechnical investigation, tunnels should have been excavated in high-plasticity clay, but during the first borings non cohesive soil was encountered. Additional investigations were performed on both shafts and a more detailed stratigraphy was reconstructed (Lombardi et al. 2015). Layers of fine sand, sandy silt and sandy silty clay were present along the tunnels crown arches and in the North East tunnel they extended down to the centre line (-13.735m above the Vistula River medium level). Based on the new stratigraphy, it was decided to stabilize the crown and control the groundwater inflow from the face with jet-grouting columns extending the treatment down to the clayey soil, but a collapse occurred in the North West tunnel with soil and water inflow inside the shaft."

INTRODUCTION This presentation is concerned with the administrative and technical capability of the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) to assure compliance with the individual exposure limit for radon daughters (currently 4 WLM per year). It is not concerned with the epidemiological bases for setting the exposure limit. Moreover, the intent is to show how sophisticated methodologies and advanced technologies, applied to radon daughter concentration measurements in uranium mines, convey the spirit of compliance by providing better estimates than do the historical methods. These better estimates mean that more accurate and more precise estimates of each worker's exposure are determined using these more modern methods and devices. The estimates so derived should provide more convincing evidence to an individual worker that his assigned exposure is a valid indicator of his true exposure. In addition, a perspective on the exposure estimate in relation to the exposure limit is given as further evidence that an exposure limit is not the dividing line between "safe" and "unsafe" exposures. A brief description is given of the compliance aspects of the Atomic Energy Control Regulations and of the limitations of purely statistical non-compliance procedures. Most of the emphasis of the paper will be placed on the uncertainties associated with conventional radon daughter exposure determination and the means being employed (and anticipated) to reduce these uncertainties. NON-COMPLIANCE Under current Atomic Energy Control Regulations (1978), the annual individual exposure limit for radon daughters is given without reference to the possible methods of sampling and calculation of radon daughter exposure and without any reference to possible uncertainties or their magnitudes. This is common in such statutes, the details of sampling, calculation, error analysis, and so on, being left for licence conditions or provided as a specific guideline to the licensee on the matter of compliance with the Regulation. Since the exposure limit is contained in the Regulations, compliance with it is absolute, as with any other law. In Canada, a state of non-compliance with the radon daughter exposure limit exists when an exposure (attributed to an employee) is reported by the licensee to exceed the limit. No uncertainty in the measurements or in the overall determination of exposure is reported nor is any requested. Removal of the worker and the loss of his services are the immediate and direct penalty suffered by the licensee for failure to maintain the exposure at, or below, the limit. A worker may be re-instated to employment for the balance of the reporting period only if the licensee can assure the AECB that further significant exposure to the worker will not ensue. In other jurisdictions, such as the United States, non-compliance is defined on a statistical basis. For example, NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health presents procedures for calculating the 95% Lower Confidence Limit (LCL) in order to "compare the results of occupational environmental sampling to an occupational health standard and make a decision with a known chance of making an incorrect decision that a state of non-compliance exists" (Leidel and Busch, 1975). (In the nomenclature of this presentation, exposure limit would be used in place of "standard", in the NIOSH sense). Furthermore, it is emphasized in the NIOSH document that such numerical comparisons "are necessary only if the sample mean is greater than the standard". The NIOSH document points out, quite correctly, that the "statistical procedures presented below will not detect and do not allow for analysis of highly inaccurate results, i.e., systematic (non-random) errors or mistakes ... If a systematic error is known to exist in an instrument or analytical procedure then correct the sample mean of the data before analyzing for non-compliance". It is certainly not the purpose of this paper to criticize the sophisticated statistical approach to non-compliance as given in the NIOSH document or in similar approaches used in other jurisdictions. Rather, the purpose is to approach, with some introspection, the question of the determination of exposure by the employer for his employee and especially the employee's understanding of, and confidence in, the accuracy of the exposure determination and its relation to the exposure limit. Volcanic activity occurred during six periods of Arizona's geologic history. Precambrian volcanism occurred in two pulses at 1.8-1.6 billion years (b.y.) ago and at 1.2-1.1 b.y. ago. Volcanism occurred again in mid-Jurassic and Laramide (Late Cretaceousearly Tertiary) time. Volcanic rocks from these times are not used commercially in any significant quantity. Middle and late Cenozoic magmatic activity covered large areas of Arizona with voluminous volcanic rocks. During the mid-Tertiary magmatic pulse, explosive silicic magmatism, with eruption of areally extensive ash-flow tufts, covered large areas in the Basin and Range Province, while the Colorado Plateau remained largely unaffected. Basalt eruption also occurred during and immediately after silicic volcanism, leading to compositionally diverse suites of volcanic rocks. Late Cenozoic volcanism occurred throughout Arizona and was dominated by wide-spread eruption of basalt flows with local cinder-cone clusters and siliceous volcanic deposits. Perlite deposits near Picketpost Mountain in northeastern Pinal County account for the bulk of the industrial uses of mid-Cenozoic volcanic rocks. Other perlites of presumed middle Tertiary age are present in central, southeastern, and western Arizona, but to date remain unexploited. Arizona Fire Agate is a valuable gem material and is associated with volcanic rocks of middle Tertiary age. Basaltic rock of this age also is utilized in the manufacture of rock wool for insulation. Late Cenozoic volcanism produced most of the industrial-quality volcanic rocks. Basalt, cinder cones, and materials of rhyolitic composition are commercially exploited by municipal and Federal agencies and private industry for aggregates, road conditioners and maintenance materials, asphaltic concretes, cinder block construction, pozzolans, and landscaping. These deposits are generally confined to the Flagstaff and Springerville areas. A famous peridot gem locality is associated with late Tertiary basalts at Peridot Mesa on the San Carlos Indian Reservation. Important products derived from altered volcanic materials of late Cenozoic age include clay and zeolite. Arizona's volcanic-rock sequences are still incompletely known, particularly in central and western Arizona. The potential for recognition and exploitation of important new deposits of useful volcanic materials is high.

INTRODUCTION Since the first introduction of explosives into mining operations, safety considerations have prohibited the use of machinery in association with the explosives. Only within the last 25 years has this situation changed appre¬ciably; the closest thing to "machinery" used by a powderman in the "old days" was his wooden tamping stick. With the blackpowder and dynamite used during the first 150 or so years of mining blasts, substituting a drill steel or a metal "spoon" invited serious disaster. With the advent of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives (1950s) and water-gel explosives (1970s) for underground blasting, machinery started to play a large part in blasting procedures. The lower sensitivity of ANFO and water gels allows these prod¬ucts to be loaded in a variety of safe ways. Not only has this meant cost savings in labor and blasting materials, but it has also resulted in whole new mining concepts where the limitations of dynamite previously made those concepts uneconomical, impossible, or excessively risky. Increasingly (totally for some mines), the traditional tamping stick has given way to a variety of pneumatic machines for loading explosives and blasting agents. The resulting blasting operations have become safer, more efficient, less uncomfortable for personnel, and a major step forward in mining technology. ANFO LOADING EQUIPMENT Three basic types of loaders are used for ANFO explosives, these being the pressure-vessel loaders, Venturi loaders, and combination loaders. Pressure-Vessel ANFO Loaders ANFO consists of prilled ammonium nitrate (porous pellets I to 2 mm in diam) and fuel oil in the appro¬priate 94 to 6% blend. The material is fairly dry, pourable, and easily conveyed by an air stream. One device or system for handling (hole loading) ANFO is the pressure-vessel loader. ANFO is dumped into the vessel or "pot," and the vessel then is pres¬surized. The ANFO is conveyed out of the bottom of the vessel into a semiconductive hose that has been inserted into the blasthole. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical pressure-vessel loader in use. Applications: The use of pressure-vessel loaders is widespread in room-and-pillar mines, including salt, potash, trona, lead, and other rubber-tired mines where the heavy pressure vessels can be mounted on a vehicle for transport from face to face. The vessel often is large enough to hold eight or more 23-kg (50-1b) bags of ANFO, so several faces can be loaded before refilling. A reliable and stable ventilation system is essential to the safe operation of underground mines. The stability of a mine ventilation system becomes extremely critical when responding to a fire incident, as an unstable ventilation system will pose a risk of airflow reversal. The reversed airflow could bring fire contaminants, such as toxic gases and smoke, unexpectedly to working areas. In the past few years, there has been a growing interest in the study of ventilation network stability using the concept of resistance sensitivity, which is described as an indicator of how the airflow in an airway is reacting to a resistance change of other airways. Several methods of calculating the resistance sensitivity in a mine ventilation network have been developed by researchers and scholars around the world. However, those proposed methods rely heavily on a vast number of mine ventilation simulations, which is time-consuming and computer-resource intensive, especially for a large-scale mine ventilation network. In this study, a derivative method calculating the resistance sensitivities with a single mine ventilation simulation is developed and implemented into the MFIRE mine fire simulation software. The results from the derivative method were verified against the results from a traditional method. The derivative method is proved to be reliable and accurate.
