The Benbrook Connection tunnel forms approximately 6,666 m (19,560 ft) of17,678 m (58,000 ft) of raw water pipeline connecting Lake Benbrook with the Rolling Hills Water Treatment Plant. This connection is designed to minimize costs to the owners, the Tarrant Regional Water District, for providing raw water to its’ various clients. The geological formations through which the tunnel passes and the design requirements resulted in some-what unique applications of initial ground support systems which were modified by the con-tractor to optimize the mining operations. The pipe sections, fabricated in 12 m (40 ft) sections, are concrete lined and coated steel pipe. Construction of the work shaft and tail tunnel was also modified to suit the contractors methods. A Lovat universal TBM was chosen to excavate through the various rock types. The pipe sections will be transported using beam carriers.

There are many advantages to upgrading coal with dry jigging technology. The most obvious is the lack of process water, which eliminates the need for fines dewatering and slurry confinement. Dry jigging eliminates the clean coal moisture penalty associated with wet processing. Particulate emissions are virtually nonexistent due to inclusions of fabric dust collectors on all modern dry jig plants. Due to the environmentally kind nature of dry jig plants, installation permits are often measured in days, not months. Coupled with all these advantages there has been a fundamental advance in dry jigging efficiency. All of these advantages have renewed the coal industry’s interest in dry jigging. But, air jigging isn’t right for every application. There are limitations due to particle size, particle shape, moisture, and near gravity content. This paper explores the evolution of dry jigging; reviews parameters important for determining the suitability of dry jigging; compares historical performance data as measured by imperfection, against results from modern dry jigging technology; and presents actual data from modern dry jig installations.

The most common technique used to suppress respirable coal dust in air is that of spraying with fine water particles. The water droplets are typically much larger than respirable dust particles and they collect dust particles mainly by interception. Dust collection efficiencies can be improved by reducing the droplet size and in- creasing the droplet velocity. This is typically done by reducing the surface tension of water and increasing the water pressure. Dust collection efficiency can be further improved by in- creasing the electrical attraction between the water and dust particles through electrostatic charging. A technique developed by Conoco accomplishes both surface tension reduction and electrostatic charging by discharging weak solutions of surfactants in water at high pressures, 13.8 to 27.6 MPa (2000 to 4000 psi) in an intrinsically safe manner. The paper de- scribes the process and presents related dust suppression data.

INTRODUCTION The measurement of the total activity of radon daughters in the air of mines has become a routine procedure in order to control the radiation exposure in miners due to the inhalation of these radionuclides. Normally the measured concentration is given in terms of total potential L-energy of the short lived radon daughters. The unit most frequently used is 1 WL (working level), which is defined as the potential a-energy of 1.3.105 MeV per 1 of air. The a-dose to the respiratory tract is, however, not proportional to the inhaled potential a-energy. In addition, the degree of equilibrium between the daughter products in air and the fraction of daughter products not attached to aerosol particles (the unattached fraction) must be known. Theoretical calculations of the equilibrium between daughters and the unattached fraction have been presented by different authors (Jacobi, 1972; Porstendörfer et al, 1978). Such calculations must take into account the plateout of daughters on surfaces, the attachment of daughters to aerosols and removal of daughters by the ventilation. The situation in mines will however be very complex and no single model will cover all situations. In most cases the radon and radon daughter concentrations will be described by a combination of different models. Domanski (1979) used the experimental results of Breslin et al. (1969) from uranium mines to relate the equilibrium between the individual daughters to the equilibrium factor, F. Once the equilibrium factor is known, this seems to be a useful approach to assess the individual daughter concentrations. The concentrations of radon and daughter products may vary considerably during the day. Seasonal variations are also frequently found. It is therefore important to have knowledge of the magnitude of these variations and of the factors having the strongest influence upon the concentrations. The unattached fraction of radon daughters in uranium mines was investigated by George and Hinchliffe (1972) and Raghavayya and Jones (1974). Mercer (1975) later modified the results of Raghavayya and Jones. Both these investigations indicated that the aerosol particle concentrations was the main influencing factor upon the unattached fraction. In this paper we will summarize the main results of a study on the radiological characterics of nonuranium mines. We will also discuss the correlations between the unattached fraction of the potential a-energy and the unattached fraction of the individual daughters, and between the equilibrium factor F, and the individual daughter ratios. More detailed discussions of this study will be published elsewhere (Stranden and Berteig, 1981 and Stranden and Berteig 1981 a). MATERIAL AND METHODS During 4 two-weeks periods corresponding to the seasons in the Norwegian mine where the highest radon daughter concentrations occure, the parameters listed in table 1 were studied. RESULTS Correlation between equilibrium factor and individual daughter ratios. The mean value of the equilibrium factor in all Norwegian mines measured during the last ten years was 0.46 with a minimum of 0.08 and maximum of 0.93 (Stranden and Berteig, 1981). The correlations between the equilibrium factor F, and the individual radon daughter/radon ratios were studied and the results indicated high correlations. In table 2, these correlation formulae are listed together with the correlation coefficients. The Surface Mining Control & Reclamation Act is a complex piece of legislation signed into law on August 3, 1977. It is the culmination of more than six years of debate by the Congress over the need for a national regulation of surface mining as opposed to the prior concept of regulation by each concerned state. It departs from the more normal type of law in that it includes very specific requirements, limitations and performance standards. In its procedural aspects, it is somewhat similar to the Clean Air Act and the Water Pollution Control Act in that it places primary responsibility at the state level, provided the state meets minimum national requirements. At the time of writing this paper, in late December 1978, the Interim Regulatory Program has been in effect for seven months. The proposed regulations for the Permanent Program, the draft Environmental Impact Statement, and the draft Regulatory (Economic) Analysis ware available for eight weeks before the close of the comment period on November 27. We are now awaiting issuance of the final versions of these documents. The states in which coal is mined, for the most part, have made sere revision to their state laws and are in the process of revising their regulations, or have just completed the revision, to comply with the Initial Regulatory Procedures. They are now faced with another new major effort to analyze and plan for compliance with the Permanent Regulatory Program, which is expected to be promulgated by the Office of Surface Mining of the Department of Interior by the time this paper is presented.

The amenability of a calcite-bearing ore to the reduction of silica to below 0.2% by physical beneficiation was studied. The objective was to use the ore as a raw material for seawater magnesia production. The ore contains complex gangue minerals such as diopside, forsterite, phlogopite, clinohumite, graphite and quartz. These contribute to around 25% acid insolubles with 6% SiO2. Reverse-flotation studies using various cationic collectors with tannin as a depressant indicated the possibility of reducing the acid insolubles to around 5%. Direct flotation of calcite with anionic sodium oleate in the presence of sodium silicate and lactic acid as a depressant indicated the possibility of reducing the acid insolubles to below 3% and the SiO2 to from 0.2% to 0.3%. Lactic acid was found to be an effective depressant of the complex gangue minerals in the ore.

The Changement mine in French Guyana has, since 1983, processed gold ore by classical gravity methods. A large part of the gold is in the form of very small, free or enclosed grains. Recovery by gravity methods is thus limited (25-30%) and the present plant produces about 40,000 t annually of auriferous waste assaying about 6 git. The company therefore decided to retreat the waste by heap cyanidation. After laboratory tests which showed the feasibility of the method, a pilot test was set up on site. An experimental 3000 t heap, composed of waste of 0-8 mm grain size, was laid out by bucket loader on an impermeable pad covered by PVC and geotextile cloth. The upper layer of the heap was reworked by mechanical shovel to break up the area that had been compacted by the passage of the loader so as to restore adequate permeability.

In Rudarski Institut Ljubljana (RIL), i.e. Ljubljana Mining Institute, we have developed CADRIL, a smaller CAD package which purpose is to overcome the difficulties by introducing Computer Aided Design in our mines. Program CADRIL is a graphics shell for several computer applications in mining. With the basic version of CADRIL all 2D working maps for daily use can be produced. Inserting different program blocks into CADRIL we get versions MAPRIL, TAHRIL, SECRIL and so on. The main purpose of all versions is graphics design. The main and most innovative feature of CADRIL is the screen four-word command menu. Not having pull-down or tablet menus is the speciality of this program. CADRIL contains 500 achievable commands. Each of them can be composed by choosing two to four expressions stored and shown in a specific four- column menu, sorted as objects functions, parameters and modes. Thus all commands are immediately accessible. As a result of its plainness and adaptability to the present working methods of mining engineers, CADRIL quickly attained a good reputation in our mines.

Two hundred and thirty million tons of coal! That is what the Burlington Northern (BN) railroad anticipates that it and the Chicago North Western railroad (CNW) will haul out of the southern Powder River Basin l (see map on page 966) in 1994. Put that 209 Mt (230 million st) into railroad perspective. Current average train size is 113 cars. With each car transporting 94 t (103.5 st) of coal, each train averages 10.6 kt (11,700 st) of coal. Simple division shows that 209 Mt (230 million st) of coal equals 19,658 trains a year. So BN and the CNW must move 54 loads a day out of the Basin. Every load, of course, has an empty side of its cycle. This means that 54 loads a day translates into 108 total trains a day, or 39,420 trains a year through the southern PRB.

Foster-Miller Associates, Inc. (FMA), under contract to the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA), is currently developing an Extruded Tunnel Lining System (ETLS). The ETLS would reduce ground support costs in machine bored tunneling by eliminating the need for temporary support, and by slip-forming the final concrete lining directly behind the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The system can advance at variable rates, from 0.6 to 3.7 m (2 to 12 ft) per hr, by combining three systems: a very high early strength concrete, continuously produced and delivered by a concrete process system; a slipform/bulkhead system for supporting the concrete prior to strength gain and exposure; and a control system for form/bulkhead alignment and concrete process control. Large-scale tests are planned to demonstrate the system in a 3 m (10-ft) diameter steel "tunnel".

The reaction kinetics of sulfuric acid leaching of brass foundry flue dusts were studied. As received flue dusts were separated into two size fractions, a coarse fraction (median size 103.5 microns) and a fine fraction (median size 3.4 microns). Experiments were performed on both fractions al-though most results are reported for the coarse fraction. Leaching experiments were conducted in a stirred reactor to determine those factors which govern the kinetic response of the sys-tem. The kinetics were followed by determining the increase in the concentration of dissolved copper with time. The effects of temperature, concentration and oxygen partial pressure on the rate of copper dissolution were examined. In addition, reaction residues were examined by SEM, EDAX and X-ray analysis. An activation energy of 4.8 kcal/mole (20.08 kJ/mole) was calculated. The rate was found to be significantly dependent on oxygen partial pressure and acid concentration. The order of the reaction with respect to oxygen partial pressure and hydrogen ion concentration was approximately 1.50 and 0.37, respectively. The National Steel Pellet Company is owned by National Steel Corporation, managed by the M. A. Hanna Company and located near the town of Keewatin in northern Minnesota. Annually, the concentrator processes 15.24-Mt (15.0 million It) crude taconite with eight 8.2-m diameter by 5.5-m long (27 ft x 18 ft) wet semi-autogenous (SAG) mills to produce 4.57-Mt (4.50 million It) of iron ore pellets. To improve operating costs and primary mill grinding circuit efficiencies, a task force on liners was formed with the operation, maintenance and engineering staff at N.S.P.C. along with the local supplier of mill liners. Results of the task force recommendations since 1980 along with improvements made in the primary circuit operations, are presented. Mill Liner Design and Metallurgy Changes The primary mill liner task force was formed in 1977. Its function was to improve the operating costs and milling efficiencies of the ten 8.2-m x 5.5-m (27 ft x 18 ft) wet SAG mills that were operating at the time. The SAG mills are driven by two 3500 HP motors drawing a total of 5450 kW at 76% of critical speed.

The result has been an unacceptable record of accidents and fatalities.

Landusky Mining, Inc. and Zortman Mining, Inc. are two registered Montana Corporations wholly owned by Pegasus Gold, Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. The Zortman and Landusky Mines are located in the Little Rockies District of central Montana. The Zortman-Landusky mines produced 2,100 kg gold in 1982. A total of 3,250,000 t of ore per year are mined during the period March 1, to September 15, at an average grade of 1.04 gm/t (0.03 oz/t) gold and 13.4 gm/t (0.385 oz/t) silver at a cutoff grade of 0.35 grams of gold/ton (0.01 oz of Au/t) of ore. The stripping ratio during 1983 is anticipated to be 0.75/1 waste to ore. Combined average plant capacity of the two Merrill-Crowe plants is 9,840 lpm (2,600 gpm). The combined heap spray capacity of the two plants approaches 18,900 lpm (5,000 gpm). The mine employs approximately 200 people, about half of these work for the mining companies and the other half for the mining contractor, N. A. Degerstrom of Spokane, Washington. Net profit in 1982 for Zortman and Landusky Mining, Inc. approximated $4,900,000 at an average gold price of $11.40/gm.

The purpose of this paper is to present the key elements in a system; study of the electrical system for a timing and/or tilling operation. The ability of an electrical system to function in a reliable fashion at its proper levels is essential for an operation to be successful. A system study consists of a load study for determining the capability of the electrical network to provide power to the various loads and a short circuit study for determining the capability of the electrical protective equipment to properly protect against fault conditions. The sequence of events in a system study is data acquisition, determining the electrical parameters and analyzing the ability of the system to meet these requirements. If the system is small, herd calculations will be the manner in which the study will be conducted; if it is large then commuters will be used. A load study has as its objectives the determination of the capability and reliability of the source of power, transformers and conductors to satisfactorily deliver power to the loads at an acceptable voltage level. The Information required is a single line diagram showing the source, transformers, conductors and loads.

"With the background of water shortages and serious water pollution, issues of water involved in energy exploration and utilization have become critical problems affecting urban water usage. In order to identify the relationships of the energy-water nexus, this paper characterizes the energy-water nexus literature using a bibliometric method and based on the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure database platform. The results reveal that 1) Scientific outcomes in this field have increased sharply since 2003, with a slightly higher growth rate than that of general disciplines. 2) China Water Resources, Yangtze River and Express Water Resources & Hydropower Information are the dominant journals, and the main research fields include industrial economics, environmental science, and management, among other disciplines. 3) Hohai University, the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, and the Changjiang Water Resources Commission are the main research institutions in this field. However, the proportion of publications of these institutions is not high, which suggests that there is no institution dominating this field. 4) According to the keyword analysis, the hot spots in this field include ecological environment, sustainable development, environmental protection, climate change, etc. Energy-mining related keywords have increased over time, implying that the energy-water nexus from the perspective of the energy exploitation industry can become a key issue. At the same time, the frequency of keywords related to sustainable development has been maintained at a high level, and the studies concerned with the impacts of climate change were introduced into this field relatively late. The conclusion of this study provides a foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the current situation as well as for further research in the energy-water nexus field.Introduction As an important strategic resource for national economic and social sustainable development, water has been increasingly focused on by the Chinese Government. Over the next decade, the total water demand of China will continue to grow steadily, which lead to a significant trend of increasing water consumption in the future (Zhang 2013). To reasonably exploit, utilize, conserve and protect water resources, the Water Law of the People's Republic of China was enacted by the members of the 9th National People's Congress Standing Committee in 1988 and after multiple revisions, the latest of which, in September 1, 2016, has involved water infrastructures in the national economic and social development plans of the government at all levels and regulated the rationale for water engineering construction. Thus, in the context of serious water shortages and water pollution, China’s government has taken several measures to make rational use of water resources."

Pardon my audacity, but I feel that this is the solution, not just a solution. Further, I will be so bold as to maintain that this is the last-ditch, eleventh-hour chance for the mineral industry to solve its critical technical manpower shortage. I am not being facetious. I am convinced that there is only one solution--just as there is but one real cause of the problem. My conclusion 'is reinforced by countless talks of endless hours with people both in and out of the industry, with employers and employees, and with educators and students. While I claim no originality for the idea and have no pride of authorship, I am concerned that the industry hear and heed in time. It is quite unlikely that the mineral industry and the mineral engineering profession will willingly subscribe to my thesis or gladly buy my proposal. I am convinced, however, that it is the only course of action open to us, and the only course of action which will succeed.

Today, man is able to probe space because of technological advancements including the ability to control certain combustion reactions very precisely. The recent adjustment of the attitude of Skylab by radio command from earth is an excellent example of such control. It is strange, and indeed unfortunate, that very little is known about the mechanism of combustion of pulverized coal, the primary fuel for rotary kilns. The selection of a coal for direct pulverized firing of a rotary lime kiln may be determined by trial and error, persistence of sales personnel, proximate analyses, grindability, or apparent BTU cost. Occasionally, the only question asked is, "How much lime will it make?" To study the behavior of a particle of coal in the combustion stream of a rotary kiln is most difficult. We must, therefore, discuss the general mechanism of combustion of pulverized coal, and relate this mechanism to the selection of a proper coal for a rotary kiln. The classic three T's -time, temperature, turbulence -must be enlarged upon for a better understanding of the problem. Pulverized coal occupies only 0.01 per cent of the volume of air required for its combustion. This mixture behaves like a gas and the general laws governing the movement of solid particles in gasses are in effect. The differential velocity between air and coal particles depends on forced and natural convection, diffusion, and the length of time each particle is in the combustion space. As a particle of coal absorbs heat from its surroundings, it begins to give off volatiles". These gasses ignite as their kindling temperature is reached, and burn readily because of the excess oxygen immediately available. Combustion proceeds at this stage by the outward diffusion of gas from the coal particle into the surrounding oxygen-rich envelope. We could say combustion at this stage represents a small coal particle surrounded by an envelope of volatiles burning at their point of contact with sufficient oxygen. This release or expulsion of gasses from the coal may result in exfoliation or disintegration of the coal particle. If this occurs, and it is desirable that it should, it will accelerate the final stages of combustion. The escape of volatile material from the particle of coal and its subsequent combustion will cause increased turbulence around that individual particle. Ignition is maintained by radiation from gasses and solids in the combustion system, and most importantly, re-radiation from the kiln refractories and the process load.
