An experimental program in the U.S. Bureau of Mines' Safety Research Coal Mine evaluated the effects of dead end crosscuts on the transport time of CO along a mine entry. The presence of carbon monoxide is a characteristic of a fire in its incipient stage, and is significant in the determination of a fire location in a mine from the analysis of arrival times of pre-set concentrations at CO monitors. In this investigation two entries, with a total of ten crosscuts, connected by a room were instrumented with CO sensors as part of a real-time monitoring and data acquisition system. Controlled release of 1% CO was monitored as the contaminant traveled the entries for several different configurations of CO sensors and exhaust fan settings. In addition to the normal longitudinal dispersion of CO due to turbulent mixing at the front of the CO wave, the induced rotation of air established within a crosscut by the entry flow diluted the CO concentration through entrainment. It was determined experimentally for the entry and crosscut configuration considered that the transport time for a specified CO concentration was 27% greater than the predicted time based upon entry volume only, but 13% less than the predicted time based upon entry and total crosscut volume. The proper interpretation of the measured transport time of a specified contaminant concentration between sensors is important for mine safety in the isolation of a fire and plans for miner evacuation.

As a result of the Three Mile Accident and because of evidence indicating radiation protection problems, the U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) undertook a major effort, with the assistance of the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL), to analyze radiation protection programs at 47 commercially operated nuclear power plants. This effort, the health physics appraisal program (HPAP), using a modified management oversite and risk tree analytical logic methodology (MORT) which consisted of analytical trees with applicable questions for each tree, was subsequently extended to include USNRC licensed uranium mills. In the uranium mill appraisal, a team of four senior radiation safety professionals spent a week at each mill evaluating the total health physics program. Prior to the HPAP, the USNRC inspection efforts were designed to determine if the licensees were fulfilling the requirements of the code of federal regulations and the mills source material license. The HPAP, however, was designed and structured to facilitate an integrated look at the total program. It is also directed into areas for which explicit NRC regulatory requirements may not currently exist. The latitude of the HPAP was designed to allow professional judgement in the evaluation of program adequacy, because merely meeting the explicit regulatory requirements does not necessarily ensure an adequate and effective health physics program. The results of the first eight site visits and the generic health physics problems identified within the uranium milling industry will be identified in this paper.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated froth flotation techniques to remove heavy metals (Pb, Cu, and Zn) from southeast Missouri lead mill tailings. It has been estimated that southeast Missouri contains between 200 and 300 million st of Pb tailings stored above ground. The tailings were classified as two distinct types: (1) pre- 1968 tailings from the Old Lead Belt (some more than 100 years old) and (2) post-1968 tailings from the New Lead Belt. The objectives of the investigation were to reduce the Pb remaining in the tailings to (500 ppm (<0.05% Pb) and to attempt to recover a marketable concentrate to offset a portion of the remediation costs. The remaining dolomite-limestone would then be used as mining backfill or agricultural limestone. Bench- scale froth flotation removed, in percent, 95 Pb, 84 Cu, and 54 Zn, leaving 94% of the original weight containing, in parts per million, 400 Pb, 40 Cu, and 300 Zn from the Old Lead Belt tailings. Separate flotation tests also removed, in percent, 85 Pb, 84 Cu, and 80 Zn, leaving 75% of the original weight containing, in parts per million, 400 Pb, 200 Cu, and 500 Zn from the New Lead Belt tailings . Concentrates recovered from the Old Lead Belt were retreated to produce a final Pb concentrate containing 72% Pb with a cleaner flotation recovery of 79%. Froth flotation proved to be a viable method to remove the heavy metals.

A biologically assisted ferric iron leaching system was evaluated for in situ recovery of three copper sulfide oresfrorm northern Michigan. Laboratory scale bacterially assisted ferric sulfate leaching tests were run on the three ores. A T. ferrooxidans strain was found that could be adapted to copper in solutions at concentrations as high as 20 g/L. Column leaching of 4.5 to 2 mm (-4 +I0 mesh) material yielded extractions of 80-90% copper from one ore and 70 and 60% from the other ores. The highest copper extractions were from the Mount Bohemia ore deposits located in the Keweenaw Peninsula, which have fracture controlled chalcocite mineralization. The Bohemia ores are apparently well-suited for in situ solution mining.

The newly developed Bateman Flotation Machine has proven its versatility in roughing and cleaning flotation circuits. This mechanical flotation machine has the dual performance capability of suspending solids and dispersing air at relatively low power inputs without compromising these two important fundamentals. This new development has been successfully marketed to a wide cross section of concentrator mineral processes. The mechanical design of the flotation mechanism has been optimised to reduce operational costs and to lower manufacturing costs. Production process environments were utilised for verification of the scale-up of each cell volume size rated mechanism. These thorough investigations produced performance data which could be accurately quoted. This paper is a historical account of the Bateman Flotation Machine. Technical details of the development are covered with descriptions of the operational applications.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest will hold its 15th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards banquet on Saturday, Dec. 6,1997 in Tucson, AZ, preceeding the Arizona Conference of SME. The Mining Foundation&apos;s Hall of Fame, located in Tucson, recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by individuals and industry partners. A permanent display of honoree vitae is located at the Arizona Historical Society at 949 E. Second St. in Tucson. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two honorees from mining history are chosen by the Hall of Fame committee and the board of governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation also initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. And in 1995, an award was instituted to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year&apos;s inductee is James R. Moffett, chairman and chief executive officer of Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc. He will be present as guest of honor and featured speaker. The Hall of Fame will induct John V. Dorr, metallurgist and chemical engineer. Also inducted will be Frederick L. Ransome, a geologist. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Hugo T. Dummett, senior vice president, Exploration BHP Minerals, and Spencer R. Titley, professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona. An Industry Partnership Award will be presented to the Colorado School of Mines for its continued support to the mining industry through education and research. Rutile ore is an important resource for the production of titanium products, and flotation is an efficient method to enrich rutile from its deposits. Motivated by strong commercial demand for titanium metal and alloys, substantial efforts have been made to improve the flotation efficiency of rutile. Styryl phosphonic acid (SPA) and salicyl hydroxamic acid (SHA) are commonly used as collectors for rutile flotation, and lead (Pb) ions can be used as activators for rutile flotation with SPA or SHA. Xanthates have a price advantage over SPA and SHA for the flotation of sulfides as SPA and SHA prices are higher than xanthate prices. In this work, we found that when rutile is activated by lead ions, amyl xanthate is an efficient collector for rutile flotation at pH 8. A slightly basic slurry can be readily obtained. Moreover, the price of amyl xanthate is lower than that of SPA or SHA. In this regard, this flotation strategy has the potential to be used in industry. Furthermore, the adsorption features of amyl xanthate on the Pb-activated rutile surface was investigated by experimental methods, which provides insight into the role of lead ions in rutile flotation.

Ore bodies which were once uneconomical to mine by conventional methods such as tunneling or open pits, have become attractive due to the development of nonconventional techniques, involving considerably less capital expenditure. Technologies such as uranium solution mining or in-situ leaching, have enabled commercial scale mining and milling of relatively small ore pockets of lower grade, and may make a significant contribution to overall U.S. uranium supplies during the next 20 years. Commercial size solution mining production facilities have operated since late 1975. Solution mining involves the pumping of ground water, fortified with oxidizing and complexing agents into an ore body, leaching and solubilizing the uranium in-situ, and then pumping the solutions to the surface where they are fed to a processing plant. Processing involves ion exchange, precipitation, calcining, and packaging operations. This paper presents an overview of the solution mining process and the health physics monitoring programs developed over the last four years at several production facilities as a result of the radiological character of these processes. Although many radiological aspects of the process are similar to that of conventional mills, conventional-type tailings as such are not generated. Some special monitoring considerations are presented which are required due to the manner in which radon gas is evolved in the process and the unique aspects of controlling solution flow patterns underground. An overview of the major aspects of the health physics compliance and monitoring programs that have been developed are discussed.

The successful demonstration of a precast segmented concrete liner in the Lexington Market Section of the Baltimore Regional Rapid Transit System (BRRTS) is an important step forward in our continuing efforts to control tunneling costs in the USA. In addition to its contribution to specific savings in future tunnels, this demonstration project has taught other lessons about the U.S. tunneling industry and about the process of "mainlining" new and improved technology into that industry. This paper will present an overview of the Lexington Market Demonstration Project from its beginnings to the present time. In addition, it will discuss other implications which have an important bearing on the extent to which tunnels will be used in future transportation systems in the USA. THE HISTORY Precast segmented concrete tunnel liners are not new. An unbolted version was reportedly used in New York City in the 1930&apos;s. The modern bolted configuration has been in use in foreign countries for more than 15 years. Indeed, consideration of the use of precast bolted segments below the water table in the USA dates back to the BART system in San Francisco in the 1960&apos;s. At that time, they were evaluated and it was concluded that the state of the art would not allow segments to be precast to the required tolerances. Heap leach mining has long been an economical method for mining oxide copper ore, and with the U.S. Bureau of Mines' discovery of a way to economically strip gold and silver from carbon, it has become the standard in the gold and silver indus­try as well. Sulfide leach in copper recovery has always been a byproduct of oxide leach mining, although the methods and recovery rates have increased with technology. SX-EW has kindled a new interest in large deposits and dormant dumps of low grade sul­fide ore. Gold ore bio-oxidation was developed in the 1980's, but not tried on a large scale until US Gold built the Tonkin Springs Mine. This mine was dedicated to the large scale production of low grade sulfide ore that could be recovered through the newly discovered bio-oxidation method. On a small scale the method worked, but as time went on, problems with the process were costly and recovery was poor. US Gold did not have the finan­cial backing to perfect the process, and the mine was closed in 1990. Since that time, Newmont Gold Company has taken the lead and has dedicated a lot of resources to the perfection and implementation of this method. Some small mines have discov­ered that if they can use this technology they may be able to dou­ble and triple current ore reserves, because they will be able to mine deposits previously considered not to be economical.

Powered dust-filtering helmets (dust helmets) have become increasingly prevalent in the underground mine environment in recent years. Many longwall operations use dust helmets to reduce the respirable dust exposures of miners required to work downwind of crusher, roof support and shearer operations. While continuous mining sections are usually less dusty, use of diesel equipment represents a new potential health problem. The U.S. Bureau of Mines recently conducted a study to determine the efficiency of a dust helmet on diesel-size particulate. Two underground evaluations were conducted on continuous mining sections that were using diesel haulage vehicles. Model No. AH21 Racal airstream helmets equipped with AS22-3 prefilters, AS23-3 main filters and AS60476 tyvek full-face seals were tested. Helmets were placed on mannequin heads and mounted in the ram car cabs. Andersen Model 298 (eight-stage) personal cascade impactors were used to sample air inside and outside of the helmet. Impactor stages 8 and the final filters were analyzed to determine submicrometer (0 - 0.93 µm) particle concentrations. Results from this study showed that the dust helmet was 94% (± 3% at 95% confidence level) efficient on submicrometer particles. Typically, very little coal dust is observed in the submicrometer size range, therefore, these particles were assumed to be from diesel exhaust. Results from this study indicate that proper use of the dust helmet on continuous mining sections that are using diesel haulage vehicles may be beneficial to the health of miners.

Contract required excavating 2,000 If of 14&apos; horseshoe tunnel in rock, a 95&apos; deep work shaft on shore, and a 50&apos; deep intake shaft located in the middle of the Niagara River just above Niagara Falls. Large quantities of H2S were encountered in the range of 20 PPM with ventilation. Peak levels of 40 PPM were recorded. The original designed ventilation system required only a volume of 10,000 CFM to meet OSHA requirements. The volume of air was increased to 50,000 CFM to dilute the H2S to al- low workmen to work and comply with OSHA H2S action levels. The second phase of the tunnel consisted of placing 72" ID X 20 foot long concrete reinforced pipe in the tunnel. When the tunnel was holed through and both shafts were open, a substantial amount of work was required to take place in the shafts which eliminated the possibility of placing a bulkhead to secure proper ventilation. The ventilation team designed a jet system airlock. The design of this system was to bring fresh air down the work shaft in two duct systems; one 30" diameter and one 24" diameter. Following the excellent work of Jan Wolski (7th Mine Ventilation Symposium chapter 58) our design incorporated nozzles located approximately 100&apos; in by the work shaft. The velocity of the 24" diameter duct was 6,365 FPMD2.2 MPH. The velocity of the 30" diameter duct was 6,117 FPMl69.5 MPH. Both systems were on blow and being that air expands at 3112 degrees per side this high velocity of air expanded and created an air bulk head through which men and the large sections of concrete pipe could be passed without any delay or additional cost to the project.

The Chamber of Mines of South Africa is an association of major mining corporations, gold mines, coal mines, diamond mines and other metalliferous mines. It looks after those interests of its members which can best be handled on a co-operative basis. The Chamber&apos;s activities include the engagement of labour; the negotiations of all labour matters, including minimum wage rates, with recognised trade unions and associations; the carrying out of advanced technological research; representing the industry in dealings with the government and the administration of miners&apos; training colleges and rescue training stations. Subsidiary companies of the Chamber handle matters such as the refining of gold and other metals; the processing and marketing of uranium and the marketing of Krugerrands. The thirty-two gold mines members of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa produce approximately 694 tons of gold per annum. To achieve this they employ 430000 persons and break about 8400 kilotons of rock per month. The working revenue is approximately 4 225 million US dollars per annum and the annual working profit is approximately 2 050 million US dollars. The electric power consumed by the gold mining industry is 1650 MW, about 20% of the total power produced in South Africa, and the annual costs of this power is approximately 200 million US dollars per annum. It is estimated that about 25% of this power is used for ventilation and refrigeration appliances. Thus the annual power costs for ventilation and refrigeration is approximately 50 million US dollars. The gold bearing reef is a narrow tabular deposit situated at varying depths throughout the gold fields. The weighted mean rock breaking depths and, virgin rock temperatures range from 1 700 - 9 000 ft (520 - 2 740 m) and 68 - 113°F (20 - 45°C) respectively. The maximum virgin rock temperature at which mining currently takes place is 130°F (54.5 C). Obviously at such depths and temperatures and with such a large labour force the provision of an acceptable environment is critical and to achieve this 59 000 000 cfm (28 000 m3/s) of air is downcasted during the main shift and 122500 tons (430 MW) of refrigeration are provided. Legislation in South Africa requires that on metalliferous mines when more than 1000 persons are employed underground during any one shift the manager shall appoint one or more ventilation officers. The legal responsibilities of the ventilation officers are concerned mainly with the measurement and control of dust. In practice, this is not the main part of their work and ventilation personnel perform many other duties such as measuring and controlling the distribution of air, checking the performance of fans and cooling plants, planning air and refrigeration requirements and, more recently, measuring and controlling noise and illumination levels. Ventilation personnel are specialists who provide management with advice on all matters relating to the mine environment. At the present time there are 506 persons engaged as ventilation personnel in gold mines and a further 1744 persons are employed in gold mine ventilation departments in a non-technical capacity, for example as construction workers, filter cleaners, fire patrollers, etc.

Location Xiaolangdi is located in the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. The distance between Xiaolangdi and the capital of Henan, Zhengzhou, is about200 km. Xiaolangdi is located on the Yellow River at the end of its big characteristic knee. It can be easily found on the map by locating Luoyang. The closest big city to Xiaolangdi is Luoyang (about 45 km). This city has about1 million inhabitants and is well known also to foreigners for its famous historical past. It has been the capital of China through 10 dynasties in former times. Overview The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project is located at the last gorge of the middle reach of the Yellow River. The main purposes of the project are: -flood control, - ice jam control, - sediment control, - irrigation, - water supply, - hydroelectric power generation. The project consists of many structures, these are 10 intake towers, 9 flood &sediment tunnels, 6 power tunnels, 1 underground powerhouse, and 1 zone dearth and rockfill dam with a sloping impervious core, 154m high, with a crest length of 1317m. The powerhouse mainly features 6 turbine and generator units of 300 MW, totalling installed capacity of 1800 MW and annual energy output of5.1 GWH. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 12.65 billion m³ of which 5.1billion m³ is live storage. Of the Yellow River drainage basin, 694,000 km2 or 92,3percent is located upstream of Xiaolangdi Dam Site. Xiaolangdi is located in a key position for flood and sediment control of the Yellow River. Upon completion, Xiaolangdi Dam and Reservoir will effectively mitigate catastrophic floods, the control level will be increased from the present less than 100-year return period up to 10,000 years. Introduction Significant increases in extraction ratio on the order of 6% to 8%, equivalent to as much as 142 t/m (48 st per ft) of panel, have occurred at the Big Island trona mine during the last five years with the help of a practical rock mechanics program. This increase in resource recovery also has contributed to improvements in productivity. Both conventional and continuous machine mining have been used to mine two flat-lying trona beds at depths of 250 m and 260 m (820 ft and 853 ft) in the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. Conventional room-and-pillarmining originally was conducted in panels with extractions of 5 8% to 60%. The use of yield pillars has allowed the panel extraction in increase to 66%. Continuous machine mining was introduced, with a 64% extraction ratio using long, narrow pillars and wide rooms. Further improvements in resource recovery seem feasible in light of present mining experience. The rock mechanics program consisted of field instrumentation to determine the pillar and roof response hole locations. to mining and computer modeling to evaluate the stability of various layouts, which were then adopted for mining. Mining background Stauffer Chemical Co.&apos;s Big Island mine and refinery are located 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Green River, WY. Underground mining operations supply trona, a sodium mineral, to the refinery to produce soda ash. The room-and-pillar method is used to mine two 3 to 3.6 m (10 to 12 ft) thick, flat-laying seams at depths of about 250 to 260 m (820 to 850 ft). Mine production in 1986 was 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st). A previous investigation showed that corrosion currents estimated from polarization curves for the pyrrhotite-grinding media system under abrasion correlated well with corrosion currents estimated from marked ball wear test data by applying Faraday&apos;s law. Freshly abraded metal debris were magnetically attracted to pyrrhotite and lowered the rest potentials of the mineral particles, thereby affecting the corrosive wear. On the basis of tonnage, the sand and gravel industry is the second largest nonfuel mineral industry in the United States. In 1990, the production of sand and gravel was 927 Mt valued at $3.4 billion. California, which leads the nation with more than 126 Mt, together with Texas, Washington, Michigan, and Ohio, account for 36% of the total production in the nation (Table 1). In commercial usage, sand applies to rock or mineral fragments ranging in size from particles retained on a No. 200 Sieve (0.074 mm openings) to those passing a No. 4 Sieve (4.76 mm openings). Gravel consists of rock or mineral fragments larger than 4.76 mm, ranging up to 88.9 mm maximum size. The construction industry consumes 97% of the sand and gravel produced; the remainder is sand used for specialized products such as glass (see chapter on Industrial Sand and Sandstone and Glass Raw Materials). Utilization The building industry uses sand and gravel chiefly as aggregate in portland cement concrete, mortar, and plaster; the paving industry uses sand and gravel in both asphaltic mixtures and portland cement concrete. Aggregate is commonly designated as the inert fragmental material that is bound into a conglomerate mass by a cementing material such as portland cement, asphalt, or gypsum plaster. Sand and gravel is also used as construction fill, road base and subbase, and decorative material. Portland Cement Concrete Aggregates: Portland cement concrete consists of sand and gravel surrounded and held together by hardened portland cement paste. Concrete mixes commonly contain 15 to 20% water, 7 to 14% cement, and66 to 78% aggregate. Sand and gravel used as concrete aggregate have to meet many requirements (Goldman and Reining, 1983). Premature deterioration of concrete has been traced in many instances to the use of unsuitable aggregates. Asphaltic Aggregate: Asphaltic mixtures used predominantly for paving consist of combinations of sand, gravel, and mineral filler (material finer than 0.076 mm), uniformly coated and mixed with asphalt produced in the refining of petroleum. Sand and gravel used as asphaltic aggregate must meet the same general physical requirements as materials used for portland cement aggregate. GEOLOGY General Requirements of Aggregates Construction aggregate has many requirements that are difficult to meet if only unprocessed material from natural deposits is used. Suitable material is composed of clean, uncoated, properly shaped particles that are sound and durable. Soundness and durability are terms used to denote the ability of aggregates to retain a uniform physical and chemical state over a long period of time so as not to disintegrate when exposed to weathering and other destructive processes. Individual particles must be tough and firm, possessing the strength to resist physical stresses and chemical and physical changes, that may cause swelling, cracking, softening, and leaching. The aggregate should not be contaminated by excessive clayey material, silt, mica, organic matter, chemical salts, and surface coatings. Physical Properties: The quality of aggregate depends upon its physical and chemical properties. These, in turn, may be inherent mineralogical and textural features of the rock or may be the effects of later changes such as tectonics, mechanical or chemical weathering, or incrustations. The physical properties most significant for concrete use are: 1) abundance and nature of fractures and pores, 2) particle shape and surface texture, and 3) volume changes which may occur because of freezing and thawing or wetting and drying. An aggregate is considered to be physically sound if it is adequately strong and capable of resisting the agencies of weathering without disruption or decomposition. Minerals or rock particles that are physically weak, extremely water absorptive, and easily cleavable are susceptible to breakdown. The use of such materials in concrete reduces strength or leads to early deterioration by promoting weak bond between cement and aggregate, or by inducing cracking, spalling, or popouts. Severely weathered, soft, micaceous, or porous materials may cause localized stresses to develop in concrete by swelling and shrinking during wetting and drying or freezing and thawing cycles. Physical Suitability of the Various Rock Types. Sedimentary rocks have a wide range in physical and chemical qualities. Sand- stones and limestones, if hard and dense, are ordinarily satisfactory, but many sandstones are friable and excessively porous and commonly are clay-bearing. Shales generally make poor aggregate material, being soft, weak, and absorptive. Most igneous rocks are satisfactory, being normally hard, tough, and dense. Tuffs and certain flow rocks may be extremely porous and have high water absorption and low strength. Metamorphic rocks differ in character. Most quartzites are massive, tough, and dense. Fine-grained marbles are usually durable, but coarse-grained marbles have low abrasion resistance. Gneisses are ordinarily very tough and durable. Some schists contain micaceous minerals that are undesirable because they are soft, laminated, and absorptive. Micaceous minerals are susceptible to splitting along cleavage planes and thereby impair particle strength and durability. Some schists and slates in particular are thinly laminated and tend to assume flat slabby shapes that lack strength-and do not pack well. Any or all of these rock types may be rendered undesirable because of harmful exterior coatings. Weathering processes, particularly the action of ground waters, deposit these coatings. The most common coatings are calcium carbonate, clay, silt, opal, chalcedony, iron oxide, manganese oxide, and gypsum. Particles with these coatings are undesirable as aggregates because the bond between particle and coating may be weak, and decreasing the strength of the aggregate-cement bond.

"The Bypass Tunnel has high head conditions ranging from a minimum of 600 feet (183 m) under the Hudson River to a maximum of 875 feet (267 m) on the west side. The ground cover ranges from 425 feet to 900 feet (130 to 274 m). A two-pass lining is designed for the Bypass Tunnel. The bolted, gasketed precast segments carry the temporary hydrostatic and permanent ground loads. After the tunnel is put into service, the design assumes that the final lining, which varies from reinforced concrete to reinforced concrete with steel interliner, will carry the permanent hydrostatic loads. The design head for the segments is assumed at 775 feet (236 m), and the internal operating pressure head is around 1,200 feet (366 m). This paper discusses the design hydrostatic head and different load conditions considered for the segments, the load sharing between the segments and final lining, and the means employed to control water and hydrostatic pressure. PROJECT BACKGROUND The Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT), a segment of the Delaware Aqueduct, was built from 1937 to 1944 and provides about 50% of New York City’s total water supply. Monitoring and tunnel operations have shown that the RWBT is leaking up to 35 million gallons per day (MGD) (132.5 million L/day). In particular, two locations have been identified as areas of concern: Roseton and Wawarsing, as shown in Figure 1. The Wawarsing reach of the aqueduct will be repaired with an extensive grouting program when the RWBT is unwatered. However, because of the extensive nature of the leakage in the Roseton area, a Bypass Tunnel will be constructed to divert the flow around this area."

Two major changes occured during the last 5 years in the applications of computers. First, the cost of computer equipment decreased drastically in an era of high inflation. Second, technological breakthroughs in hardware and software have been applied successfully so that the average person can successfully utilize the computer without having to be a computer expert himself. The mining industry has recognized that computing technology has evolved to a point where it can be applied successfully to assist in improving productivity. Since equipment downtime is one of the major reasons for lost production, the Kennecott Minerals Company has developed a comprehensive maintenance information system which now assists the maintenance department in minimizing equipment downtimes. This paper discusses the primary features and functions of this system, the state-of-the-art technology that has been applied, and the benefits that resulted from using this system. Programs to support mobile equipment maintenance scheduling, which currently are under development, are reviewed and a summary of future applications is given.

Introduction Ontario&apos;s diverse industrial mineral resource base includes structural minerals such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, clay, shale, limestone, and dolostone. These resources are used to produce aggregates, brick, metallurgical stone, fillers, cement, lime, and other construction materials. The majority of the operations are in deposits of Palezoic and Quaternary age in southern Ontario, close to the major markets. Province-wide, there were more than 140 Mt (154 million st) of aggregates produced in 1985. About 115 Mt (128 million st) of that was produced in southern Ontario with the rest being largely from Crown land in northern Ontario. Structural industrial minerals account for more than 80% of the value of total industrial mineral production. The remaining 20% is accounted for by the nonstructural minerals, such as salt, which is produced in the southwestern part of the province. A host of other nonstructural industrial minerals are known. Production, though, is currently restricted to calcite, gypsum, quartz, talc, nepheline syenite, and byproduct metallurgical sulfur products (Fig. 1). Major production is close to the large markets of urbanized southern Ontario and the northeastern and northcentral US. With an abundant variety of industrial mineral resources and the large population within 650 km (400 miles) of most deposits, the market offers great potential. Ontario&apos;s nine million people accounted for about 35% of Canada&apos;s entire $476.3 billion gross domestic product in 1985. This equates to about one-third of the nation&apos;s buying power being within a 200-km (125-mile) radius of Toronto. This major concentration of industrial and economic activity has resulted in a well-developed industrial minerals industry that fulfills most of the structural industrial minerals demand in Ontario. Nonstructural industrial minerals are similarly well placed to compete in this high demand area. Although Ontario manufacturers still import some of these materials, Ontario products are achieving significant market share. And, they serve the needs of neighboring provinces and states. Present production and trends Ontario has traditionally produced significant amounts of industrial minerals. This produc¬tion had a value of $956 million in 1984 (Table 1). Structural materials production in 1985 and 1986 approached or exceeded levels not seen since the early 1970s. Many new products have been developed using these raw materials.
