The employment of continuous rotary vacuum disc filters to filter refuse from the fine coal washing circuits has been increasing as it has become more important to close the water circuits and eliminate sludge holding ponds. This paper will discuss our past experience filtering refuse, effects of solids concentration in the filter feed, use of polymer flocculation aids, effect of flocculation devices, and effects of particle size and ash content on the filtration rate. Detailed tests were performed on existing installations utilizing coal refuse filters to determine optimum flocculant dosage, solids concentration, and disc rotation speed to form a dischargeable cake. Information was also obtained showing effect of flocculant addition on the moisture of the filter cake. Our test work has shown that the continuous filtration dry cake rates for fine coal refuse correlates very well with the data developed and presented by Silverblatt and Dahlstrom1 except that the curves have moved up the scale by use of polymer flocculant additions. These polymers were not available at that writing. Finally, our tests also confirmed the general premise stated by S. K. Mishra2 that controlled additions of polymer flocculants will reduce filter refuse cake moistures somewhat.

Wollastonite is a little known industrial mineral of the silicate group. The largest and purest known deposit in the free world is being mined and beneficiated in Millsboro, New York by NYCO, A Division of Processed Minerals Incorporated. The associated garnet and diopside are separated from the wollastonite using dry high intensity magnetic separators. Beneficiated wollastonite is used extensively as an additive and filler in the ceramic, paint, refractory, and wallboard industries. Wollastonite acts as a functional filler due to its unique chemistry and physical acicularity.

This paper discusses some of the problems involved in predicting the productivity of a shovel and truck fleet in a new set of operating conditions. More specifically, it concentrates on the problems of predicting the travel times on the haul and return portions of the truck cycle under new profile conditions and the prediction of the interaction effect between the shovel and trucks at the loading point. The ability to calculate the travel times for a new road profile is not new. Additional corrections of these calculated times for expected actual operation can be made. In considering the interaction between the loader and the hauler, there are two approaches that can be taken. Probably the most accurate method of predicting the shovel-truck interaction is a simulation of the step-by-step operation considering the variation in cycle times of the shovel and trucks. This is usually called a stochastic simulation and requires input describing how these cycle times vary. However, by understanding the causes of this shovel-truck interaction it is possible to make sufficiently accurate predictions with much simpler methods. For the purpose of this discussion let us assume that the problem involves trying to predict the productivity of a single shovel-truck fleet at some future time in an existing operation. Let us also assume for simplification that the new operation to be simulated has the same loading and pit conditions and the same dumping conditions as did the existing operation. Therefore, the only difference would be the difference in the hauling profile for the new operation. The problem then becomes one of predicting the change in the travel times on the haul and return portions of the cycle, and in determining the change in interaction between the shovel and trucks with the new truck cycle times.

The 9.5 mile long, 25.5' diameter Effluent Outfall Tunnel is the center piece of this program. A Robbins double-shielded TBM is currently driving this challenging tunnel some 400 feet below sea level. This paper will discuss the set-up and operation of this Tunnel Boring Machine in driving the longest single heading tunnel ever built in North America.

INTRODUCTION At the time the 4th edition of this book was published in 1979, the coal industry had experienced a sharp upturn in prices for its product. From 1950 throgh 1969, steam coal prices had held almost flat at about $5 US per st (about $5.50/t). Thus, when considering the effects of inflation, the price of coal had actually been declining for two decades. The passage of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act in 1969 and its cost effects started an upward trend in coal prices which was rapidly accelerated by the effects of the Mid-East oil embargo in 1972. Prices of steam coal on the spot market eventually climbed to over $30 US per st ($33/t) and higher in some cases. Metallurgical coal prices skyrocketed in a similar manner and the industry at long last appeared assured of an adequate return on investment. Many companies did expend large sums of money to upgrade and expand their mining and preparation facilities. Unfortunately the bubble eventually burst, in great measure due to the downturn in the US domestic steel industry and the resultant decline in metallurgical coal demand, loss of export markets to other nations and even imports of large amounts of foreign coal to the United States, and more stringent environmental regulations which made many high sulfur coal measures uneconomical to mine. Compounding the problem was the rapid world decline in oil prices in the mid-1980s which encouraged many consumers to utilize oil rather than coal. During the 1980s, metallurgical coal dropped over 20% in price, which, when considering inflation, actually amounted to about a 40% decrease in value. Export coal decreased a similar amount in price. Steam coal prices held nearly constant, thus also losing considerable value when inflation is considered. All of these factors make it even more imperative than ever that the industry do everything in its power to make wise economic decisions and to examine carefully all existing operations and planned future expenditures to be certain that their full cost implications are understood and that they can be justified on the basis of an adequate return on investment. It cannot be assumed that the price of coal will increase. To the contrary, as indicated previously, when considering inflation, coal decreased in value in the 1980s, just as it also did in the 1950s and 1960s. The price surges in the 1970s merely were a catchup game, and in truth the true market value of coal is in reality even lower than it was in 1950. From a historical perspective, bentonite is the common rock term for various uses and applications. Its name originates from water-based muds near Fort Benton used for lubrication of wagon wheels during the 19th century migration to western territories (which are presently part of the United States) when the pioneers ran out of axle grease. From a clay mineralogy perspective, bentonite is composed primarily of montmorillonite, an expandable magnesium aluminum silicate clay mineral. When magnesium occupies an octahedral structural site that usually contains an aluminum atom, a negative charge is created. In order to neutralize negative charges, cations are drawn to the interlayer surfaces between clay mineral sheet structures. Modem applications for bentonite depend on the sodium or calcium cation populations and other characteristics of the clay mineral. When sodium is the dominant cation, the material is called sodium bentonite, also known as swelling bentonite, western bentonite or Wyoming bentonite. When calcium or magnesium is the dominant cation, the material is called calcium bentonite, also known as non-swelling bentonite w southern bentonite.

An examination was conducted on the impact of roof conditions and the mining cycle in determining a representative respirable mass concentration at the mid-shearer location on a longwall panel. Multiple personal gravimetric dust samplers, operated at a flow rate of 2.0 lpm, were used at different locations along the face to isolate the concentrations and variances associated with good and bad roof conditions under both the cutting and cleaning mode of operation. The number of samples needed to estimate the population variance at a given confidence level was analyzed. In addition, the statistical analysis showed that the coefficient of variation of dust concentrations at different locations and under different conditions ranged from 0.185 to 0.475, with an average value of 0.283. The estimates of the average dust concentration for a shift and the variance of the dust concentrations were calculated. A total of 48 data points were available for an [a x b] factorial ANOVA (analysis of variance). The estimates of the variance components were determined. The results from F-tests indicated that both the roof conditions and mining operations had a significant effect on the respirable dust concentration. There was no significant interaction effect between mining operations and roof conditions. In conclusion, this study shows that not only should sampling and analytical errors be considered in determining the required number of samples for a good estimate of the long-range exposures of miners, but also fluctuations of concentrations due to mining operations and geological conditions should be taken into account.

The integration of sustainability principles into day-to-day minerals processing operational decision-making processes has unique challenges that are not addressed adequately by current tools and methodologies. A proposed methodology to achieve integration of sustainability at the operational level will direct the systematic and rigorous identification and characterisation of sustainability issues in an operation. The methodology allows different approach strategies for assessment, comprehensive accounting of sustainability indicators and has the ability to identify sustainability issues which may have significant business implications that cannot be identified using traditional analysis processes."

Column flotation continues to make inroads into applications traditionally dominated by mechanical flotation cells. For example, columns are becoming more visible as rougher flotation devices. At Royal Mountain King Mine in California, two 2.9 m (9.5 ft) diameter columns are used for rougher flotation of carbon from a gold ore (Orlich et al, 1992). In addition, work performed at BRGM in France demonstrated the superiority of column flotation over mechanical flotation with respect to design of new plants (Morizot et al, 1991). With the mounting evidence, columns can succeed in any flotation application. The primary reasons for this acceptance of columns are a general improvement in design, scale-up and operation as well as improvements in sparger design and performance. Coal extraction typically results in the recovery of pure rock that ranges from small to very large quantities depending on seam thickness and other characteristics. The removal of pure rock may allow the recovery of three times the amount in middling coal particles, which has significant economical benefits. In an industrial example, a 150% increase in revenue was realized from deshaling a low-ash, run-of-mine coal and blending with a processed clean coal product. Deshaling is the process of removing pure rock from coal, which normally involves a high-density separation in a gravity-based process. The removal of the relatively pure rock near the point of extraction has the potential to further enhance the economics of an operation due to reduced materials handling and refuse storage costs.

Underground production of coal by longwall methods has increased significantly in the last few years and will very likely continue to: increase. There are several reasons for this. First, as mining moves into seams having greater overburden, roof exposure must be reduced since support will become' increasingly expensive. Secondly, the growing demand for coal has forced the coal industry to seek alternative, more productive, coal mining methods. In addition, the longwall method greatly simplifies the underground ventilation network. This paper addresses itself to the design of longwall development headings, particularly to those of the United States where multiple development headings are required by law. The most burdensome problem encountered in many longwall mining installations is deterioration of the tailgate due to the combined effect from, the active longwall gob and the old gob made by mining the previous panel.1 Portions of the tailgate entry are sometimes closed to such a degree that extensive repair work is necessary to keep the entry in usable condition. The purpose of this paper is to present the result of a study in progress which combines field measurements with numerical model analysis to reduce the cost of maintaining tailgate entries in longwall mining systems.

Unmodified pneumatic rock drills may have noise levels of 115 to 130 dB at the operator's position. Experimental modifications have been made to a standard drill to suppress the noise from the three main sources: the air exhaust noise, the noise radiated from the drill, and the resonance noise of the steel drill rods. A prototype model developed at the Bureau of Mines, Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, operates at a noise level below 100 dB. A close-fitting case and muffler unit, consisting of a metallic skeleton filled with viscoelastic absorber and having a durable cover, provided both muffling and noise absorption. Damping alloys were used at strategic points in the drill. Drill steel resonance noise was reduced by a constrained-layer treatment on the outside of the drill rod. The singular and combined effects of the treatments are presented in detail.

INTRODUCTION Environmental impacts are most commonly associated with air and water pollution. Not- withstanding this fact, to many people the primary disruption caused by mineral extraction is the change in the character of the locale. That is, the environmental impact of mining includes, but is not limited to, the generation of residuals. The dramatic transformation of wilderness or rural land often creates strong reactions to mineral development. Thus, the basic issues of land use management are a useful addition to environmental discussion. In this section, we take up a discussion of federal, state, and local land use management regimes, along with a brief introduction to the potential role of economic analysis. Elsewhere in this volume, land management issues are discussed from other orientations, and the interested reader may wish to look there as well. Locatable Minerals on Federal Lands Legislation and Administration: Access to hard-rock minerals on the public lands is governed by the General Mining Law of 1872. This law declares that "valuable mineral deposits in land belonging to the United States . . . are hereby declared to be free and open to exploration and purchase . . . ." In order to initiate rights, prospectors are required to physically stake claims of specified sizes and shapes following basic procedures set by federal law which may be supplemented by the individual states. Rights to these claims are protected at the exploration stage so long as actual possession is maintained and diligent exploration activity is underway. If a valuable mineral deposit is discovered on the claim, the claimholder earns the exclusive right of possession as against private parties so long as the claim is properly maintained. To maintain this exclusive right the claimholder must per- form $100 worth of labor or improvements, known as assessment work, on each claim every year and make related annual filings with the U. S. Department of the Interior. If the existence of a valuable mineral deposit can be demonstrated, and other legal requirements are met, the claimholder may receive a patent giving full title to the claimed land, including the surface in most cases. The purchase price is either $2.50 or $5 .OO per acre. The Mining Law has remained largely un- changed by legislative amendment during its now more than 100-vear existence. However, while the law itself has not changed, its interpretation and administration have changed considerably. Written at a time of rapid western expansion of the U.S. following the Civil War, the intent of the law was to promote mineral development by inviting unrestricted prospecting and by selling the lands containing mineral deposits at a minimal charge. As federal land policy shifted from one of rapid disposal into private ownership to one of retention and management for a number of uses, mineral patenting requirements have been administered more strictly. The most critical issue concerns what must be demonstrated to establish the existence of a valuable mineral deposit. The so-called "prudent man" standard was established in the case of Castle v. Womble (19 L.D. 455 (1894)):

St. Joseph Lead Company has been paying incentive bonuses for well over 40 years. In 1958 almost half of St. Joe's 1,860 employees in Southeast Missouri received some form of incentive bonus in addition to their guaranteed wages. There are very few payroll jobs in St. Joe s Southeast Missouri organization that lend themselves to a reasonably good measurement of production or quality, or both, where an incentive bonus is not paid. The term "Incentive Bonus" is used to differentiate betwen bonuses that are based on quantity or quality of work, and those that are merely additional pay of a standard amount per hour or day because of an employee being temporarily assigned to some unusual task, An employee temporarily assigned to a job where the working conditions make the job performance unusually difficult or where a special skill is used is often given a bonus of some standard amount per hour or shift in addition to his usual rate. This is merely a convenient way of paying something extra without disturbing the normal rate structure. Actually, it is differential pay similar to that almost universally paid for evening and night shift work. Bonuses of that type are not being considered in this paper. The basic reason or theory for paying incentive bonuses 9s to get improved production at lower cost, Unfortunately, it is often difficult, if not impossible, to find a yardstick by which it can be definitely proved that a particular bonus plan is accomplishing its purpose, It becomes, then, a matter of judgment on the part of management personnel as to the value of the bonus plan. The fact that St. Joe Lead Company has continued to pay bonuses for over 40 yews and has increased the number of bonus schedules used attests to a definite belief that they are beneficial to the company's successful operations.

In recent years, there have been many articles and papers written on the use of specially designed belt conveyor systems in mining operations, either economic studies or actual experience. These papers generally conclude that the use of these systems can reduce overall costs from 10% to 40% over conventional methods using general purpose equipment (truck/shovel, scrapers, etc.). However, they also generally conclude that conveyor systems are inflexible and capital intensive. With the increasing cost of mobile equipment, the capital cost conclusion is losing steam, particularly when the costs of maintenance shops, road and ramp construction and other related start-up costs are thrown in. Attention here will be focused on answers to flexibility related questions, but first, a look at costs in general. Basic production economics tell us that when we have a small job to do, it is cost effective to use simple, low cost, general purpose tools which will have a minimum impact on total cost. It also tells us that when we have a large project, we can employ methods using special, relatively expensive production tools. Figure 1 illustrates what occurs on projects, of different sizes, with various quantities of production. With small quantities of work, the cost per unit of work starts out much lower using general purpose equipment, rather than using special purpose methods and equipment. However, at a relatively low quantity of work, the cost hits a lower limit and, regardless of how great the quantity of work, the unit cost can never go any lower.

In the comparison and consideration of synthetic and natural materials, graphites represent a situation in which natural graphites amount to less than 10% of the total carbon and graphite production by weight, and less than 5% in dollar volume, There are few applications where it could not be re- placed by synthetic graphite. On the contrary, synthetic graphite materials can be engineered to cover an extremely wide range of applications. These include electrographite brushes for rotating machinery, pyrolytic graphite, graphite-impervious pipe, nuclear moderators, high purity spectrographic graphite, power tube anodes, graphite rotary shaft seals, and rocket nozzles. The special qualities of natural graphite and its limitations are delineated and the almost unlimited possibilities in artificial graphite materials are discussed.

"This paper presents experiences gained from the construction of the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project. The 4.7 km long tunnel was excavated with a hybrid TBM (able to operate in both closed and open mode). The tunnel crossed metamorphic and sedimentary rocks under a hydrostatic pressure of about 14 bar. During the excavation of the tunnel the TBM encountered difficult ground conditions caused by a combination of high water pressure, poor ground quality and locally low depth of cover. The adverse conditions required the TBM to be driven in closed mode at very high support pressures (10 – 15 bar) for approximately 60% of the tunnel length. The paper summarizes the main problems encountered during TBM excavation and analyzes the evolution of the TBM parameters over the entire tunnel length. INTRODUCTION The Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project is located approximately 30 km away from the city of Las Vegas in Nevada, USA. The project consists of the construction of a deeper third intake for the biggest reservoir in the United States, which is formed by the Hoover Dam. The construction of the new intake was required due to the constant drawdown of the lake level (more than 40 m in the past 20 years) and the consequent risk that the shallower intakes 1 & 2 may run dry. The project included the fabrication and positioning on the lake bottom of an intake riser, the excavation and lining of a 185 m deep shaft and construction of a 4.7 km long tunnel. One peculiarity of the project is that the water table is located about 140 m above the tunnel elevation (i.e. corresponding to a hydrostatic pressure of 14 bar at the current lake level). The tunnel was constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) able to operate in both open and closed mode (Mc Donald & Burger, 2009). The present paper focuses on the TBM tunneling experience gained from the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 tunnel. The TBM excavation started on December 27, 2011 and finished on December 10, 2014 with the breakthrough to the intake structure at the bottom of Lake Mead. GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS The assessment of the ground conditions encountered during construction was mainly based upon qualitative descriptions of the tunnel face conditions (during open mode operations) and analysis of the extracted muck (during closed mode operations)."

INTRODUCTION Mining activity and basic geometry of open pit mines represent major obstacles in geotechnical mapping. Mining creates a constantly changing topographic base which may require corresponding updates of field sheets before mapping can proceed. The rapid pace of mining operations may also threaten removal of important geologic and engineering features before adequate base maps and surveyed control can be established. Maintaining such control during the mapping process is yet another complication. In addition, basic geometry yields nearly vertical outcrops. Access required for direct observation and measurement, essential to conventional plane table or Brunton techniques, may be impossible on such surfaces. Also, nearly vertical surfaces appear fore- shortened in plan view. This reduction in area provides little room for recording geotechnical detail. The difficulties encountered in open pit mapping can be substantially reduced by utilizing a modified form of plane table photogrammetry. This technique employs photographs taken from the ground as the base upon which details are recorded. The information is later transferred to plan maps using the plane table principal of location by intersection (Davis and Foote, 1953). Any change in topography can be accommodated by simply taking additional photographs. Proper spatial representation in plan view can be determined later when updated maps and surveyed control are available. In addition, horizontal photographs from the ground portray vertical surfaces as they are normally viewed thus providing maximum area for recording details. Any detail which can be identified on the photograph can be located correctly even though the actual feature is physically inaccessible. The technique presented in this paper was developed by the author for special applications at Kennecott's Bingham operation in 1970. The procedure was rapidly adopted for general use and has proven to be a practical tool for detailed investigation of potentially unstable areas (Zavodni and McCarter, 1976) and routine geological mapping (Richardson, 1975). Major advantages, other than those mentioned above, include: The speed and accuracy are greater than for conventional plane table or Brunton methods. The photo- graph represents a view from a station at some distance from the area being mapped. This vantage point allows evaluation of possible continuity of structures from one level to another which may not be evident at close range. Languages such as SIMSCRIPT and GASP have reduced the programming skills required to build simulation models, but not to a level where these can be used by a busy engineer or manager unless he has extensive programming experience. In an attempt to make simulation a more readily available tool, Sanford (1969) structured a generalized materials handling model (UGMHS)* for underground coal mining. The majority of materials handling systems consist of a set of moves and a set of pieces of equipment required to execute the moves. UGMHS gives a technique for describing and classifying the elements in these sets and then a technique for simulating the interactions of these elements as the materials handling system operates. To apply the model, the user simply furnishes data parameters and a fixed set of orders to the computer for his own problem. This new philosophy of dynamic simulation as applied by UGMHS was demonstrated in the paper by Sanford and Manula (1973). A dynamic model of underground coal mining was presented for the purposes of systems design and selection of equipment for a completely new operation and the analysis of existing ones for possible alterations, additions, and general improvements. The main differences between this application and its predecessors is the ability to transport material from multiple mine faces to multiple mine destinations and the ready adaptability to a wide variety of mine layouts. The second difference that characterizes the model is the deterministic simulation of equipment moves according to their mechanical capabilities and the physical profile of the mining scheme. Here, the computer generates performance data in the absence of time studies to compare equipment rather than operator performance.
