This paper describes the implementation of specialized software in mine planning at the Cleveland-Cliffs' managed Empire Mine on Michigan's Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience on the eastern end of the Marquette Range beginning in the early 1960's. The Empire Mine, in its thirty-fifth year of production, uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short and long range planning.

Water infiltration into subgrade infrastructure can cause major impacts on their performance. In addition to damaging the structure, water intrusion leads to deterioration of installations including electrical and mechanical components and in patron discomfort. To remedy these impacts, leak remediation is often carried out to halt water infiltration. Remediation methods include coatings, drainage, injection/stitch grouting, curtain (backside) grouting, and/or internal umbrella systems. Selection of the rehabilitation method depends on the structure’s use, owners’ priorities, its installations, structural conditions, surrounding ground, and hydrogeologic conditions. Since many factors influence the rehabilitation method chosen, a novel holistic approach is undertaken to understand leakage causes and consequences to develop the most appropriate, efficient, and reliable solution to extend the structure’s life. A reconnaissance phase combines geologic, hydrogeologic, and as-built information with detailed digital scans and visual observations to develop a database of existing conditions. This database, called a tunnelband, is used to develop the rehabilitation solution and made part of the contract documents, allowing for an informed bid by specialty contractors. Tunnelband and the preferred rehabilitation system are portrayed in contract documents, which are procured in various contract types depending on the owner’s preference and project characteristics. The pool of contractors are required to submit their understanding of this holistic approach by developing and supplying the owner with a detailed workplan. The completed rehabilitation is portrayed in detailed as-built drawings which also provide the owner with an operation and maintenance manual outlining for periodic observation of the structure and checking of its performance. Ultimately, this information is implemented into a “BIM Digital Twin” that is used by the operations and maintenance staff for long-term observations. This proposed novel framework for leak rehabilitation is currently being used successfully in a number of projects throughout the United States.

The United States Potash Company was the original discoverer and first producer of under-ground mined potash ore in North America and commenced active production of potash in 1931. In July 1956, the company merged with United States Borax & Chemical Corporation and is now a Division of that corporation. The mine is located twenty-two miles east of the city of Carlsbad and the refinery is located sixteen miles south of the mine, The mine was placed where the ore was found and the refinery placed where there was sufficient water for a dissolving and re-crystallization plant. For twenty-three of the last twenty-six years, the potash ore was mined with the room and pillar method, taking approximately sixty percent extraction and leaving forty percent in pillars. These pillars are generally fifty-eight feet by fifty-eight feet square. Three years ago, it was decided that removal of as large an extraction as possible from these pillars should be commenced.

"3D finite element models of the Segmentally Lined Shaft (SLS) structure are simulated as means of numerical analyses of the system’s structural behavior. Top-down constructed rings, comprised of precast concrete segments, create a large diameter, relatively shallow underground space that can be utilized for various applications. To further investigate the effects of soil conditions and different loadings on the shaft structure, the FE model was run under various boundary conditions. Simulations include a) effects of various soil layers on the SLS, including a circumferential boundary of modified ground, b) effects of various soil layers on the SLS without any ground modification, c) Seismic analysis of the SLS with ground modification and d) Seismic analysis of the SLS without any ground modification. Comparing the analyses outcomes emphasizes the significance of the inclusion of the ground modification boundary in the structural performance of the SLS. INTRODUCTION TO SLS Underground structures are classically built rectangular in shape, which normally requires a two-step construction process beginning with installation of temporary shoring to support earth loads during the excavation, followed by the construction of the permanent structure. Attractive and practical alternatives are circular shafts referred to as segmentally lined shafts (SLS). The structure consists of a stacked series of rings formed from an assemblage of precast concrete segments. Top-down constructed systems of large diameter, relatively shallow SLS structures provide both temporary earth support during excavation and permanent structural support for many civil and building applications. The circular shafts sustain the lateral earth pressure mainly through hoop-stress mechanism, resulting in improved stability and structural efficiency. Cylindrical shell structures with large diameter to wall thickness ratios are prone to buckling under external pressure. In typical designs of small diameter shafts and tunnel linings with small diameter to wall thickness ratios, nonlinear buckling analysis (i.e., nonlinear geometric analysis) is usually not considered, since the buckling capacities for those structures are much higher than typical pressures encountered at their design depths. With an economically viable wall thickness, buckling becomes a critical issue, which should be addressed, for circular shafts with very large diameters. In the design and construction of the SLS, the stability of the structure can be improved by modifying the soil surrounding the circumference of the shaft to a limited thickness and to about 10 ft below the finished shaft structure. This thick wall of soil mixed with cement creates a composite integrated structure while serving additional purposes such as ground control and ground water seepage cutoff."

Synthetic indium-bearing zinc ferrite (IBZF) was mechanically activated by a tumbling mill. Subsequently, the behavior and kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF in sulfuric acid solution were investigated. The results demonstrate that the tumbling ball milling enhances the leaching reactivity of IBZF and increases the zinc and indium extractions. The reaction temperature and H2SO4 concentration have an important effect on leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF. The kinetic model -ln(1-x) = kt was used to describe the kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF and to calculate the kinetic parameters. The tumbling ball milling causes a decrease in activation energy and reaction order, which indicates that the dissolution of IBZF after mechanical activation by a tumbling mill becomes less sensitive to temperature and H2SO4 concentration. For the zinc leaching, the activation energy decreases from 73.9 to 70.3 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.72 to 0.70. For indium leaching, the activation energy decreases from 78.1 to 73.5 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.82 to 0.69. It is found that the dissolution rates of the initial IBZF and activated IBZF are controlled by surface chemical reactions.

The new process consists of the selective coalescence of fine hematite particles by fine magnetite. The gangue minerals are dispersed by some dispersant; thus it can be separated by desliming. This process is particularly suitable for fine-grained hematite/magnetite-type deposits.

Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. Coal mine drainage, which occurs predominantly as acid mine drainage in the East, is a serious contaminant of surface and groundwater systems (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). Treatment of this pollutant can be very costly and is often difficult to achieve (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). A major source of coal mine drainage in surface waters is polluted ground- water discharge, therefore treatment of surface water does little to combat groundwater contamination. Prevention of the formation of coal mine drainage and restricting its entrance into the groundwater protects both surface and groundwater systems. The formation of acid mine drainage may be inhibited by preventing contact between toxic spoil, air, and water (Grim and Hill, 1974). This may be accomplished by surrounding toxic spoil with a relatively impermeable barrier, thus restricting groundwater and oxygen flow through the toxic zone. Toxic spoil packages constructed in this manner would minimize the entrance of acid mine drainage into the groundwater system, allowing dilution by uncontaminated water to occur. If successful, concentrations of coal mine drainage would be reduced below toxic levels.

Management teams at mining companies begin to ask themselves whether to take a company public and, if so, how to do it as they approach the normal threshold for going public in terms of revenue and operating performance. Today, the expense of going public generally suggests the company has at least $20 million in annual revenue and at least $2 million in cash. The revenue number can be lower for mining companies with large reserves. In order to properly attract the investing public, the company must also be operationally strong with robust prospects. The company should have a strong management team and a consistent history of double-digit growth that will continue into the foreseeable future. Assuming the thresholds are met, a company?s management needs to weigh the pros and cons of going public.

The City of Portland is constructing the Columbia Slough Consolidation Conduit as a part of its commitment to reduce combined sewer overflows into the Willamette River and the Columbia Slough. Known as “The Big Pipe,” the conduit has a 3.7 m. (12 ft.) internal diameter and is 5,640 m. (18,500 ft.) long. Construction Segment 1 of the project includes 250 m. (814 ft.) of reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) installed by boring and jacking. Five separate crossings were constructed beneath Union Pacific Railroad tracks and Columbia Boulevard, an adjacent arterial roadway. This paper describes the design and construction of these bored and jacked crossings.

The flagship of this new development is the 5000 ft3 cell that is the largest available in industry. This new series of cells includes a cylindrical tank design, a conical draft tube and froth crowder. Optional air control, wash water addition and embedded expert control are available. A discussion of the design parameters, energy efficiency, testing, and commercial plant results are presented.

The conceptual designs of three new applications for the biogenic &S treatment of metal- containing waters are presented. These include: 1. the treatment of a circumneutral-pH ground water containing Zn and Cd using limestone as an alkalinity source, 2. a two-step treatment process where toxic heavy metals in contaminated ground water are recovered separately from nontoxic metals to lessen disposal costs, and 3. a copper recovery process that may be a low-cost alternative to solvent extraction/electrowinning or cementation for dilute copper leach liquors. Qualitative and interpretative information as obtained from geological and/or geophysical studies, in addition to precise measurement, is incorporated into the estimation process through an indicator variable. The indicator conditioned estimator is formulated as a cokriging and its expression is data value dependent as opposed to that of the traditional kriging estimators. The solution of the dual cokriging system pro-vides simultaneously an estimate of the unknown and an estimate of the conditional probability that the unknown belongs to a specific population or class. Being an unbiased and minimum-error-variance estimator by construction, the indicator conditioned estimator is better in the least square sense than the ordinary kriging estimator because it uses additional information carried by the indicator data.

Glass sands fall into that extremely select category of mineral deposits that requires a fantastic degree of natural concentration (95% +) of a single component before they can even be considered as ores suitable for further refinement. The combination of geological factors that has produced such an environment of "mineralogical single-mindedness" has appeared only rarely. Factors that require consideration in the economic evaluation of a potential glass-sand deposit can be grouped into three categories: 1) geological (e.g., size, shape, structure); 2) petrographic (e.g., grain size, accessory minerals, nature of iron contaminants); 3) geographic - political (e.g., proximity to consumer, size of market, zoning restrictions). Of particular con ern is the nature of the iron contamination. Iron-bearing species appear as 1) accessory mineral grains, either detrital or authigenic, 2) cements, 3) grain coatings, and 4) quartz-grain inclusions. Selection of the cheapest form of beneficiation requires precise information on the mineralogy of the iron species and their detailed petrography. Because of the antipathetic relationships, in many parts of the United States and Canada between the geographical locations of glass plants and the geological distribution of glass sands, the selection of ac suitable source for a particular glass plant may be dichotomous. One may seek either an exceedingly pure "classic" type glass sand that is relatively distant and whose cost includes a major transportation charge or a relatively proximate and somewhat "impure" source whose cost includes a substantial fee for beneficiation.

We will describe modifications to air-sparged hydrocyclones (ASH) that enhance collisions and reaction of wastewater contaminants with sparged gas. These new ASH-based reaction chambers are combined with flotation tanks that are designed to optimize separation of bubbles and particles from water. In combination, these systems have achieved unprecedented removal of contaminants from industrial wastewater and process water while requiring smaller footprints with lower capital and operating costs. Real-world examples of chemical and nonchemical water treatments that demonstrate the outstanding flexibility and applicability of these systems are shown. Design enhancements that resolve the operational problems of traditional ASH are discussed.

The adhesion (and de-adhesion) of Bacillus subtilis to dolomite was determined under a number of conditions of initial concentration of the organism, agitation, mineral particle size and temperature. Rate equations curves for both adhesion and de-adhesion were constructed, with the rates of de-adhesion being about half that of adhesion. From the temperature data the energy of adhesion was determined to be about 1.02 kcal/mol. Adhesion of dolomite to B. subtilis follows a Langmuir isotherm. Equilibrium constants, adhesion capacity and Gibbs free energy of adhesion of B. subtilis to dolomite (at pH 6.6) were determined. These values were compared to similar data for adhesion of B. subtilis to apatite and dolomite.

The use of froth flotation as a means of separating and upgrading sulfide mineral concentrates is standard industrial practice throughout the world. Froth flotation is also widely recognized to be a very complex system having highly interactive and often self-compensating factors at work. Several summary articles have been recently published which discuss at length some of the important practical aspects of optimizing the use of existing commercial flotation reagents. Klimpel (1987). Klimpel and Hansen (1987a), Klimpel and Hansen (1987b), and Klimpel (1988). It is apparent from monitoring the industrial practice of sulfide mineral flotation over the last decade that considerable progress has been made in optimizing the operating aspects of flotation. For example, the availability of improved instrumentation and related computer devices, modified mechanical flotation cell designs, better reagent dosage control leading to less reagent usage per ton of ore, blending of feed ores, more attention to coarse and fine particle flotations, etc., are all examples of this progress.

SHELDON P. WIMPFEN The measure of the success of any mining operation is the size of the difference between sales realization and cost of product, including operating, sales, administra¬tive, capital and others. Evaluation of a mining project necessitates projecting costs and sales realization as accurately as possible. Possible variations in specific cost elements and sales prices must be considered. To accomplish this, project studies should include giving effect to possible fluctuations to determine the break¬even points with varying costs and prices. Development of cost data is never an easy task. Mining is characterized by a great variety of conditions which result in still more variables. Achieving realistic figures as of any specific time involves consideration of changes, which may be frequent, in labor-contract terms and equipment used, variations in working condi¬tions and mining practices, and changes in mineralization and metallurgy. The purchasing power of the dollar, which has been declining persistently, also affects the situation at any given time. The only thing that can be said of costs, with certainty, is that they will change. With this in mind, the "guideline" data in this section are offered for the use of the mining engineer. It was provided for the most part by representative companies, whose contributions are gratefully acknowledged. In reviewing the tabu¬lations and other material it is of course necessary to remember that the data presented are valid only for the time periods specified, and will change with changing economic conditions in any other. 31.1-CAPITAL COST OF PLANTS Plant capital costs are set forth in Tables 31-6 and 31-7 by year of construction. To estimate capital cost of plants built in future years, various cost bases and indexes are utilized. The Upper Santa Cruz Groundwater Basin lies in the drainage area of the Santa Cruz River in Arizona, and extends upstream from the community of Rillito to the international boundary, see Figure 1. The principal water use area lies between and includes the cities of Tucson and Nogales. A subsurface geologic barrier near Rillito provides a reasonable dividing line between the groundwaters of the Upper and Lower Santa Cruz Basins. The Upper Basin contains the Tucson and Sahuarita-Continental critical ground- water areas. The Tucson Water Use Area encompasses the Tucson metropolitan area and extends from the northern boundary of the Basin south to the boundary between the Tucson and Sahuarita- Continental critical groundwater areas near San Xavier. The San Xavier Use Area is the San Xavier Indian Reservation. The north and south boundaries of the Continental Use Area coincide with the limits of the Sahuarita-Continental critical groundwater area. The first study of groundwater in this valley was initiated by Dr. G. E. P. Smith in 1905 and the results were published in 1910, followed by a series of bulletins of the Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Arizona, covering the general field of groundwater development and utilization. Beginning in 1939, the Ground Water Branch of the United States Geologic Survey, in cooperation with the Arizona State Land Department and the Arizona Water Commission (AWC), have published a series of bulletins concerning groundwater occurrence and utilization in various areas of the state. In 1975 and 1977, the AWC published the "Arizona State Water Plan" (1), comprising a detailed inventory of water availability and use in the State of Arizona, and a study of alternative futures.

NICOR Mineral Ventures, Inc. retained Neyer, Tiseo and Hindo, Ltd. to evaluate the potential effects of a planned dewatering operation at NICOR's proposed, 258-acre silica sand mining facility near South Rockwood, Michigan. The ?orebody? is a horizontally extensive, friable, quartz sandstone from the Sylvania Formation which also serves as an aquifer for some of the rural, residential development near the site. We conducted an aquifer test on the site which identified the important aquifer properties. Using these data and an analytical model, we determined that the radius of influence would be expected to range up to 6000 feet from the quarry during its final development stage. An inventory of water supply wells revealed that most wells had sufficient available drawdown and would not be adversely affected. A long-term groundwater monitoring program was recommended to monitor the possible effects at some of the closest wells.
