This paper considers mining ventures occurring in rural communities in Galicia, Spain and Western Australia, Australia. It compares and contrasts the communities where mining is taking precedence over other industries, examining the potential land use conflicts and the future of both the communities and the mines currently operating there. The Galician case study, Trevinca, is located 200 km inland and was once a primary producing area, notable for its scenic alpine landscapes, which have since been developed for small scale tourism purposes. The Australian case study, Boddington is located 100 km inland in what has been a highly productive farming area. Mining was a marginal industry in the case study areas but due to the comparative devaluing of agriculture and tourism and the increased value of mining outputs, mining has increased in scale and economic importance. This paper will consider the environmental, social and economic impacts that have occurred in both the case study localities. Where there have been land use conflicts, strategies for minimising the adverse outcomes will be considered.

The installation of equipment and structures at mines often requires the evaluation of unique loading and operating conditions. Consideration of these unusual features is required throughout design and construction and into operation. The necessity for employing sound civil, structural and mechanical engineering techniques to the design of structures and equipment is well understood. However, the influence of geotechnical factors on the overall behavior during construction and operation of these facilities is less appreciated. Mine operators routinely perform exploratory drilling for the purposes of defining ore deposits. These exploration activities can be extensive and often include provisions for assessment of subsurface conditions as they relate to the mining operation, i.e., requirements for ground support. All of these factors are important to the economics of the mine and are well justified. Surface facilities are provided to access and service the mine and they play an important role in the successful development and operation of a project. Headframes, hoist foundations and shaft collars, in particular, are examples of unique installations encountered at underground mine sites. The design and above surface behavior of these facilities can be analyzed with the usual fundamental engineering practices employed throughout the engineering professions. This requirement during the project development is understood and adopted. Unfortunately, near surface exploration for the purposes of assessing soil and rock conditions for foundations are often given a reduced priority and less consideration. This paper is aimed at providing an outline into the benefits and importance of performing such explorations and to provide a brief discussion of the merits of such an approach. References in the paper relate particularly to shaft headframes, hoists and shaft collars but the issues raised apply equally well to other installations of a similar nature, e.g. milling equipment.

Economical and environmental pressures necessitates the recovery of the minus 0.6 mm x 0 coal generated by todays mining machines. This size fraction, dependent on the type of production unit, maintenance of the production unit, and the Hardgrove Grindability Index, can be a substantial portion of the Preparation Plant feed. Historically, dewatering of the collected 0.6 mm x 0 product has often been rather expensive and marginal with respect to surface moisture reduction. The Freeman United Crown II Preparation Plant more than adequately demonstrates that the continuous scroll type centrifuge can dewater 0.6 mm x 0 coal to acceptable surface moisture levels.

In the planning stages for a dozen years, the 9.11 mile long Mount Macdonald Tunnel is the focal point of the $600 million dollar Rogers Pass Project. The paper will discuss the construction of the tunnel that is being carried out from both ends. The eastern portion contractor has used a tunnel boring machine to excavate the upper part of the tunnel and at the west end contractor selected the conventional drill and blast method. A ventilation shaft located near the mid point is the main part of a ventilation system unique in the Western Hemisphere.

Underground long-range planning and mine design is an iterative process beginning with a specified production level, quality criteria, and geology of the deposit. Given these factors, face equipment is selected, the number of units needed and production per unit are calculated, and the mine infrastructure needs are developed. The scheduling of units then follows, with the design of the various support systems coming next. The support systems needed to maintain production can be grouped as follows: (1) outby haulage of mined material, (2) supply and manpower haulage, (3) ventilation and associated environmental considerations, (4) drainage, fresh water, and related considerations, (5) rock mechanics, and (6) power, supply. Thus, long-range planning may be viewed as a three-tiered structure, with the data on required production, product quality, and geology at the upper level; the development of face production capacity and the scheduling of units sufficient to meet the needs of the first two at the second level; and the development of support operations for the production units at the third level. Changes at any level may affect not only the items on that tier but may also cause a change to the items on the tier above and below. For example, if the rock mechanics data indicate that desired opening sizes will not be stable, then this situation will affect not only the ventilation design but also the production rate and possibly the selection of equipment itself. These, in turn, may affect the scheduling of units and the number of units, ultimately influencing the entire third tier of systems.

The use of small quantities of polyacrylic acid (PAA) was found to significantly improve the flotation of fine-sized hematite particles at pH 4.1 and 0.001 M NaCl with sodium dodecykulfonate (SDS). Low polymer dosages before collector addition aid flotation by forming flocs of primary particles, but excess polymer results in low flotation yields due to surface saturation by the hydrophilic polymer. Contact angles, measured on a hematite disk, substantiate the hydrophilic nature of an adsorbed polymer film. Pre-adsorbed PAA reduces the amount of SDS adsorbed on the hematite particles, but the flotation of hematite flocs occurs, even at reduced amounts of adsorbed SDS, and is not depressed until PAA dosages in excess of the saturation value are used. Separation of a hematite-quartz mixture can be achieved by SDS flotation of PAA,-flocculated hematite. Maximum selectivity results with the addition of small quantities of PAA, while excess polymer is detrimental to the recovery of hematite. Consecutive flotation states on a single feed yield a higher grade hematite product at some expense to the overall recovery.

The standard test methods used to determine the pyrite content of coal and mineral wastes, and their propensity to release acidic drainage, are critically reviewed. In addition to analysis of total sulfur by combustion, test methods using selective oxidation of pyrite by HNO3 and H2O2 are available. The oxidation kinetics of pyrite vary appreciably from sample to sample, and it is difficult to ascertain whether complete dissolution has occurred in heterogeneous materials. The reliability, reproducibility and suitability of different standard test methods were studied, using well characterized ore and coal pyrite samples. The kinetics of pyrite dissolution were also investigated. The results are discussed in terms of the fundamental chemical and physical characteristics of each sample, and the implications for waste characterization are considered.

Dragados USA is constructing the LA Effluent Outfall Tunnel, a 7-mile, 18 ft internal diameter effluent discharge tunnel, utilizing a 21.6 ft (6.585 m) Herrenknecht Mixshield TBM. This paper highlights the means and methods used for TBM launch from a 55 ft diameter shaft excavated in wet with diaphragm wall support of excavation. This included SEM excavation of jet grout blocks for starter and tail tunnels, temporary concrete structures and steel installations, TBM sealing system, umbilical management for TBM hydraulic, electric and bentonite circuits as well as complex segment delivery logistics. The many launching challenges were overcome thanks to the innovative approaches from the project team.

The mining industry worldwide has recognized in the past the need to apply specific rules and guidelines in the reporting of mineral resources and reserves. The high financial investment and risk associated with any mining project and the ever stricter environmental and social controls were the forces behind this recognition. For years the industry experienced the development and enforcement of several codes for reporting accepted by different countries. The implementation of any code can be a confusing task as the guidelines are sometimes general and open to different interpretation. The use of computers in the estimation and reporting of mineral resources and reserves is necessary, particularly when trying to implement particular code guidelines. This paper discusses ways to implement a reporting code in a computerised resource/re-serve estimation study. The implementation is demonstrated using a gold deposit project as an example. The effects of mining, metallurgical, economic, marketing, legal, environmental, social and governmental factors are taken into consideration. This paper also discusses well established reporting codes and the possibility of reaching a single, universally applied code that could be used by Greek mining companies.

In response to a request from the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Bureau of Mines has recently completed a respirable dust survey of 18 U.S. coal preparation plants. Of these, three were essentially free of dust problems. Respirable dust exposure of workers in the remaining plants depended on the time spent in the dusty areas. In five of the plants surveyed, Bureau tests showed that in some areas worker exposures could exceed Federal dust limits in less than 2 hours.

Recent work by Haas has made available information on densities and vapor pressures of solutions of differing salinities at temperatures up to 330°C. From these data it is possible to predict the behavior of volcanic exhalations of various degrees of salinity as they approach the sea floor. Particular attention is devoted to solutions of 5.0 weight per cent NaCl and 20 weight per cent NaCl, two fluids that approximate quite closely the salinities of what Roedder termed: (1) normal hydrothermal fluids and (2) fluids typical of stratiform deposits of low-temperature conditions of origin. It is apparent that solutions above 220-230°C. cannot reach a sea floor on which the depth of water is 600 feet or less in the liquid state but will boil at some appreciable depth beneath the sea floor. Such boiling would result in the precipitation of all constituents of the ore fluids of significantly lower vapor pressure than water. The principal such constituent would be salt, and no sulfide deposits, the major constituent of which is salt are known. It follows, therefore, that ore fluids probably never get close to the sea floor of shallow seas at temperatures high enough to permit boiling. Ore fluids significantly above 230°C. can reach the sea floor in the fluid state only if the depth of the sea in the area. in question is well above 600 feet, for example, solutions at temperatures of ±300°C. reach the sea floor in the liquid state only if the depth of sea water is slightly over 3000 feet. Ore fluids reaching the sea floor at such depths may be the parents of such fluids as the Red and Salton Sea brines. On the basis of these data, the Cyprus and Kuroko deposits are discussed.

The project development metallurgist is faced with an interesting dilemma: The use of overly conservative metallurgical projections and cost estimates can kill a project that has the potential to provide needed jobs and growth to a company's bottom line. On the other hand if the metallurgist uses a highly aggressive approach by trimming capital and operating cost estimates to the bone and by applying highly optimistic metallurgical projections, there is a risk of creating a project that can never live up to expectations. The metallurgist must walk a tightrope between "sandbagging" and "overoptimism," and this tightrope is fraught with political intrigue and difficulty. This paper takes a some- what lighthearted look at some of the political aspects associated with this issue, and other issues, and offers a few guidelines for walking the "political metallurgical" tightrope.

With its 2011 acquisition of rival equipment company Bucyrus International, Caterpillar added underground mining and large shovels to its line of products and further solidified its standing as the leading mining equipment manufacturer in the world with solutions for every aspect of mining. When Caterpillar spent $8.8 billion to acquire Bucyrus, the global mining business was flourishing, as mining companies around the world worked to keep up with demands for nearly every commodity. Flash forward to 2013, and the global mining landscape looks very different. Lower demand for raw material from China and India and falling commodity prices have forced most mining companies to pull back on their production. The reductions from the mining industry have hit equipment makers like Caterpillar and Komatsu hard. In October, Caterpillar reported that its quarterly earnings had fallen 44 percent. The changing conditions have also changed the narrative from Caterpillar and other equipment makers to customers from offering solutions to move the most tons per hour, to now offering solutions for the lowest cost per ton. In September, Caterpillar hosted some of its mining customers and the trade press at its Tinaja Hills Demonstration and Learning Center near Tucson, AZ to talk about its range of products, from its MineStar System designed to help increase efficiency through better equipment management and planning, all the way up to the massive Cat 7495 and 7495HF electric rope shovel lines acquired through the Bucyrus takeover

In 2001, the Radomiro Tomic Mine located near Calamq Chile, added a tertiary crushing facility. An 84" wide mobile tripper is used to fill their tertiary crushing storage facility. This paper is a we study to demonstrate the drive and control systems in use on the tripper. Of special note is the design concept used to allow the system to operate multiple motors in both demand and regenerative modes through a single VFD. Also noted is the use of touch screen local controls, handheld radio controls, starting/stopping/ braking philosophies, safety device interfaces, and the local to remote control interface.

Permanent magnets are used in most electromechanical and electronic devices to convert electrical to mechanical energy and vice versa. More than fifty are commonly found in the average American home and car. A new species of permanent magnet composed of iron, neodymium, and boron has recently been developed which combines superior magnetic properties with compact size. The reduced size of the magnets has enabled significant new developments in such areas as robotics and consumer electronic, among others. The objective of the present work is to efficiently and economically separate valuable rare earth materials from the relatively worthless iron constituent in NdFeB magnet scrap. Several magnet producers have expressed interest in the development of such a process and have provided information and scrap samples to aid in research. Scrap is generated in a variety of forms from different stages in the processing stream. Pieces of magnetic and non-magnetic metal as well as sludge and ribbon from jet casting must all be treated. Beneficiation techniques have been studied and size distributions developed for the different scrap types. Slag from the casting process is resistant to crushing and may need to be embrittled first, but all other types are amenable to crushing and ball mill grinding using stainless steel balls and water. Tabling was found to be useful in classification of magnet sludge. Two major techniques for separation of rare earths have been studied:

Stratabound uranium deposits consist generally of two comingled geologic and statistical populations. Barren zones, usually having radiometric assays too low for recording on digitized logs, comprise a large portion of a mineralized stratum. In between are mineralized zones; where the grades are distributed essentially lognormally. Estimation of open-pit ore reserves requires the prediction of the tonnages of selective mining units (the smallest mined volume which may be segregated as ore or waste) and their grades within panels of convenient size for open pit planning and economic analysis. The proportionate tonnage of mineralized selective mining units within each panel can be predicted by kriging an an indicator function assigned to each composite (1 if mineralized, 0 if barren). Next, using logarithms of mineralized assays, the conditional lognormal distribution of grades of mineralized selective mining units can be found. Using this distribution and the krigedestimate of the probability a selective mining unit is mineralized, the grade and tonnage of selective- mining units above any cutoff can be predicted. A case study illustrating this two- step procedure is presented for the Imouraren uranium deposit located in the Republic of Niger. Using cross validation, the estimation procedures were checked and were shown to be adequately accurate for mine planning purposes.

The adsorption process, density and structural property of the oleate layer adsorbed onto a hydroxyapatite (HAP) surface at six different concentrations and three pHs (pH 8, 9 and 10) have been studied using the technique of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The present study demonstrated the versatility and accuracy of the QCM-D for surface adsorption characterization. The real-time measurements of frequency and dissipation shifts with a hydroxyapatite-coated sensor revealed changes in the hydroxyapatite surface during the entire adsorption process. Chemisorption and surface precipitation of sodium oleate were also observed on the surface of hydroxyapatite through the use of Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR). Chemisorption dominated at low concentrations and high pH values and formed a rigid and thin adsorption layer. Surface precipitation of calcium oleate and micelles dominated at concentrations higher than critical micelle concentration (CMC) and lower pHs and formed a thick but dissipated adsorption layer with a high hydration level. Three distinct adsorption behaviors were identified from the different slopes of ?D-?f plots. The adsorption density was less than a monolayer at concentrations <0.164 mM, but increased significantly at concentrations higher than 0.821 mM at all three pHs. The critical concentration at pH 8 was 0.33 mM, which was lower than at pH 9 (0.821 mM) and pH 10 (3.3 mM).

Discussion by A. Unal Barbaro et al. (1990) implemented a tedious study aimed at delineating the short-scale spatial variability of sulfur in a coal seam. It is not possible, however, to extend their conclusions to any other coal seam or use their in any other fashion, because the background geology was not presented. Nor were the conclusions accompanied by geological interpretations in the paper. In addition, an unfortunate printing error occurred where the total sulfur (determined by High Temperature Combustion) variogram in Fig.3 was duplicated in Fig. 2 instead of the seam height variogram. A more serious error, however, has been committed in the definition of the variable, seam height. What is defined as seam height by Barbaro et al. (1990) is, in essence, mining height, and is not a regionalized variable that should be studied by geostatistical methods directly. Despite the fact that the variable, seam height, is not defined in the paper explicitly, the following quotation discloses the fallacy: "All roof rock that exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft) from the floor was not taken because the longwall was operated to not mine more than 1.8 in (6 ft) unless the coal seam height exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft)." From this definition, the seam height, and therefore the sampling height, is equal to the actual coal thickness, if the coal thickness is greater than 1.8 m (6 ft). Otherwise, it is equal to the sum of the coal thickness plus the thickness of the roof rock that complements the thickness to 1.8 m (6 ft). In the latter case, the seam height is constant and equal to 1.8 m (6 ft). It is possible to conduct a variogram study on a pool of samples that are realizations of two different variables. But the conclusions derived would not belong to any one of the two variables uniquely and, therefore, do not possess any significance. Geostatistical analysis is irrelevant for the sum of multiple regionalized variables formed by arbitrary selections. In a two-seam setting, for example, the mining height, as defined by the thickness of one seam at one location and the thickness of both seams at another location (due to quality and/or minimum thickness considerations perhaps), should not be used in the calculation of one common variogram. The two seams should be modeled separately. They can then be combined according to the specific purposes of the study. On the other hand, if a constant is added to a regionalized variable (to incorporate dilution perhaps), the variogram of the new variable will not change. Barbaro et al. (1990), surprisingly, does not give any geological interpretation of their results despite the fact that most of them can be explained by the origins of sulfur in a coal seam. The presentation of the results of a geostatistical study with no reference to the geology of the deposit is uninformative. It may also be misleading for the potential users of geostatistics, It is not unusual to find nuggets of pyrite in coal seams. In such cases, pyritic sulfur will probably display a spatial structure for only a very small distance that will appear in the experimental variogram as no spatial correlation. This very well known phenomenon is called the pure nugget effect in geostatistics (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978) and perhaps can explain the lack of correlation found for pyritic sulfur content. The lack of correlation found for the total sulfur content may also be explained in the same way because the total sulfur content is dominated by the pyritic sulfur content in this case study. One should notice, however, that the situation may completely be reversed after cleaning the coal. Not all of the inorganic sulfur should be expected to be in the form of pyrite nuggets in a coal seam. It may also be disseminated in the coal seam and it is expected that it follows a certain spatial structure. However, an existing spatial structure may be masked by including a part of the roof rock, rich in sulfides, into the seam thickness in an arbitrary fashion because areas having a sandstone roof sometimes are known to show a higher sulfur content due to the downward percolation of solutions rich in iron sulfides (Clark, 1979). Plants use sulfur in their growth processes. Much of this sulfur is bound organically during peat accumulation and coal formation (Cecil et al., 1978.) This suggests a spatial structure of some sort for the organic sulfur. However, it is not possible to test this hypothesis because the results obtained by the authors for the organic sulfur content are not given in this paper. For this reason, the conclusion that simple average of the nearby samples would provide the best unbiased estimates is questionable for organic sulfur and is not based on any substantial supporting evidence. It is suspected that no spatial structure was detected and this was due to high sampling and laboratory analysis errors. Before concluding that sulfur variability in the seam at the location of study was random, a more detailed study for the disseminated non-pyritic sulfur should have been conducted, not for the sake of scientific curiosity only, but also due to its utmost importance with regard to coal cleaning and emission control. Pyritic sulfur can be cleaned to a considerable extent, whereas organic sulfur can not, making the emission control strategies highly dependent on the spatial distribution of the organic sulfur (Knudsen, 1981). In the light of these facts, one wonders why Barbaro et al. (1990) did not present the results of their study for the sulfate and organic sulfur content. Providing adequate airflow to effectively dilute and remove diesel pollutants in large mine working headings is a little researched area. A simulated diesel mucking operation was carried out in the Exxon Colony Pilot Mine in Colorado to establish expected levels of diesel pollutants in dead-ended working headings. This heading was nominally 15.3 m (50-ft) wide by 9.2 m (30-ft) high. Two face ventilation systems were tested using sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas to represent the diesel pollutants. The results of these tests showed that conventional face ventilation systems operating at high flow rates could adequately ventilate diesel equipment in the 447-522 kw (600-700 hp) range, even in a dead heading 91.4 m (300 ft) in length.

A glance at the accompanying table and a review of contributors&apos; comments suggest that the industrial minerals industry is recovering from the recession of the past few years. Actually, the total value of nonmetal production in 1983 was $15.5 billion, up 10% over 1982. Nonmetallics still have not recovered to 1981&apos;s high of $25.3 billion, but at least it is on the way up. It is significant that cement (+20%), clays (+13%), gypsum (+16%), sand and gravel (+12%), sodium carbonate (+7%), and crushed stone (+11%) are up. These commodities are largely used in the housing and construction industries. Raw steel and steel mill products, iron ore production and castings, and purchased scrap are showing improvement and increased in value last year. They are, however, still not up to the high of 1981. These industries consume considerable amounts of many industrial minerals, such as limestone, dolomite, fluorspar as fluxes, and many types of refractories.
