This paper presents a computer program package for predicting surface movement and deformation caused by under-ground coal extractions. It is capable of: predicting final surface movement and deformation over underground openings; predicting dynamic surface movement and deformation process associated with underground lingual mining operations; processing and bookkeeping subsidence survey data; recommending subsidence parameters for those new coal mines where no subsidence data are available; and deducting subsidence parameters from collected subsidence data.

"SUMMARY Injection grouting in rock around tunnels is used to reduce or stop water inflow. Little is known about the distribution of pressure within the rock mass during and after grouting. Instrumentation was developed to record pressure at the back of the packers inside the rock mass during injection grouting in order to improve our understanding of the process. Using this equipment measurements inside multiple injection holes during injection pumping have been made during several rounds of injection grouting in a tunnel. The data has been compared to the data recorded on the grout pumping rig and analysed to gain an understanding of the behaviour of grout injection process in the rock mass. The initial results are reported in this paper. INTRODUCTION Construction of a tunnel in soil or rock below the ground water table frequently results in the flow of ground water into the tunnel if the ground is permeable or fractures conductive. The injection of cement or chemical based grouts is frequently used during tunnel construction to reduce flow of water into a tunnel. Significant water flow into a tunnel is undesirable for several reasons: • there is a high cost in pumping out water over the lifetime of a tunnel; • drips and flows of water have to be diverted from the roadway or track; • where freezing conditions occur there is the possibility of ice build up and; • ground water levels may be changed possibly affecting surface water such as causing drainage of lakes and ponds, and changes in vegetation. Grout injection is most effectively done ahead of excavation to ensure that the grout penetrates the ground. Where heavy flows of water already occur into a tunnel the grout may be washed out before it sets. Normal practice in ground where water flows are encountered is to inject grout in a number of long holes ahead of the face with outer holes forming a ring around the proposed tunnel excavation – eventually forming a shield of grouted rock around the final tunnel, Figure 1. The holes may be sealed off a couple of metres into the rock with an expandable rubber plug around a pipe through which the grout can be injected, Figure 2. A one-way valve in the plug stops the grout from flowing back out of the hole when pumping stops and avoids grout flowing out through neighbouring holes. The rubber packer with a one-way valve permanently installed in the injection hole precludes the measurement of pressure down the hole when pumping is stopped."

"As underground mining continues to operate at deeper depths and in more complex multiple seam mining geometries there has been an increased demand for higher design standards in ground control safety and stability within the mining industry. For the past 20 years, NIOSH has developed and validated a number of software tools to aid in the development of safer mining environments with respect to improved roof support performance, pillar stability in longwall and room and pillar mines, formation characterization, the prediction of roof conditions, etc. These tools are available, free of charge, to the mining industry as stand-alone software packages. As cloud computing gains momentum, there is a definite need to develop internet based applications for mine design that would be easily accessible to any user at any time, including underground where permitted. This paper introduces a new web-based product which will allow for faster and easier access to existing ground control designs, on-the-fly calculations in the field as needed, and instant online collaboration between operations personnel and planning engineers. It is expected that the industry will rapidly embrace this product and, as it is common with all new innovative technologies, it will be a new paradigm for mining engineering computer applications. INTRODUCTION Since its release to the public in the late 1980's, the World Wide Web has drastically changed from a collection of static HTML web pages to a dynamic vehicle driving e-commerce, collaborative working relationships, and the mass distribution of information and media (Offutt, 2002). Recent developments in Internet capabilities, such as Cloud Computing and Software as a Service, have begun a migration away from desktop-based software in adoption of the web application (Hayes, 2008). Web applications, or web apps, are designed on the client-server architecture paradigm in which the client, or user, can interact with an application through web browsers without disrupting or installing software on potentially thousands of client computers (Nations, 2015). Currently, web-based software applications are being utilized in all business sectors and markets from commerce, finance, media, and even engineering. In fact, the Alabama Department of Transportation has developed a web-based geotechnical geographical information system (GeoGIS) for the management of and access to geotechnical and subsurface data for transportation projects across the state (Graettinger, et al., 2001). Similarly, Dyno Noble has developed a service application for explosive engineers. The Explosives Engineers' Guide application equips users with a full range of product information as well as on-demand blasting calculations for powder factor, airblast prediction, ground vibration, etc. Through the incorporation of a web server, one is able to utilize the functionality of the desktop-based software through a web browser located on any personal computer, tablet, or Smartphone (Vaughan-Nichols, 2002)."

"A booster fan is an underground mechanical ventilation equipment installed in series with a main surface fan that is used to boost the air pressure provided by the surface main fan passing through it. As mining continues to expand and go deeper, the need for improved and efficient ventilation increases. This has led to the use of booster fans and other auxiliary ventilation devices in underground mines. This paper details experiments and results carried out at Missouri S&T Experimental Mine that investigated air leakage and recirculation caused by the use of booster fans. The results were compared with the situations where booster fans are used and not used.The variables considered were the booster fan blade angle and the fan combinations. Air quantity measurements were taken at each individual stopping under a number of scenarios and across four blade angle settings. The first set of situations examined were; the main surface Joy fan only running, the main Joy, and the west booster fan running, and the main Joy fan and east booster fan running. Observations were made which lead to the conclusion from the experimental analysis that booster fans affect the behavior of leakage and recirculation. The locations of the booster fan and the blade angle setting have the most effect on leakage and recirculation. To limit the potential for system leakage and recirculation, the location and size of a booster fan in a ventilation system should be thoroughly evaluated.INTRODUCTION Missouri S&T Experimental Mine ventilation system The Missouri S&T Experimental Mine has two shafts. One currently serves as the main intake shaft. Air is forced through the main shaft by a Joy Manufacturing Vane Axial fan and follows the direction shown on the map on Figure 1. The air is currently naturally exhausted through the Wheeler portal. As indicated on the map there are eight stoppings in the mine, with stoppings number 2 and 8 fitted with man doors. The mine also consists of three raises which are either fully or partially blocked, two portals with one acting as an exhaust and the other generally closed by a hydraulic Kennedy door."

Four parameters of the Drais stirred ball mitt, i.e., bead load, bead size, flow rate and top feed size have been studied regarding their influence on the specific surface area. A factorially designed scheme was employed for conducting 27 mitting tests. The results show that the bead toad is the most important parameter in terms of increasing the specific surface area with less energy consumption. The bead size is also important. The optimum ratio of bead size to top feed size is found to be 14 to 80, which is much wider than in bat2 milling. The variations in flow rate and top feed size appear to influence the process insignificantly.

Concrete pipes and small boxes have been installed by the jacking method. This paper will describe a recent project were large concrete boxes were installed by the jacking method. This project is in the city of Boston, MA. By now everyone in the USA knows something about this project. The project official name is The Central Artery/Tunnel Project (CA/T). This is the biggest public work project in the USA right now, with an estimated construction cost of 14 billions. The main objective of the CA/T project is to replace an existing artery built in the 1950s to increase capacity and safety. One section of the new artery will cross under several railroad tracks near the South Station. To construct the section of the new artery under these tracks, big concrete boxes were installed by the jacking method. The jacking method can be used to install pipes, small concrete boxes, and the CA/T project has demonstrated that big concrete road tunnel boxes can be installed by jacking.

The environmentally sound processing of metal-bearing chloride solutions plays a key role in the extraction, plating, recycling, finishing and surface preparation of metals. Additionally, many chloride-bearing waste streams must be processed to obtain environmentally acceptable products. This paper reviews the technologies used for processing aqueous metal-chloride solutions and describes the challenges that have been overcome in application of these technologies.

The seismic vulnerability of the existing outlet tower at Lake Mathews reservoir, located in Riverside County, California, necessitated the design of a new outlet facility to assure serviceability of the facility following a major earthquake. The components of the proposed facility include: a new outlet tower; a shaft; a new outlet tunnel; an approach channel that will be excavated underwater; and two short tunnels that will connect the new outlet tunnel to the existing outlet tunnel via the shaft. As the new facilities will be constructed while the reservoir is in operation, a cofferdam will be constructed around the site of the new outlet tower. The design for the underground facilities used a combination of empirical methods; limit equilibrium analyses, including displacement-based pseudo-static analyses for dynamic loading conditions; and numerical analyses. This paper outlines the design methodology used to develop an innovative design for the facilities which can be constructed within the time frame required by the operational schedule of the reservoir and existing outlet facility.

As part of a study aimed at understanding the hydrology of in situ leach mining (ISLM), the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Cyprus Casa Grande Corporation and the University of Arizona, is investigating dynamic transmissivity conditions during ISLM of a copper oxide ore deposit. Spatial and temporal variations in ore zone transmissivity during two years of ISLM operations at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine are evaluated during sixteen intervals of steady-state injection and recovery well operation. Direct inversion of an analytical hydrologic model is used to obtain estimates of transmissivity at 58 well locations during these intervals. Univariate statistical and geostatistical methods are used to describe the temporal and/or spatial relationships that exist between transmissivity and other ISLM parameters, including average well injection pressure, average sulfuric acid concentration in leach solution, and the relative configuration of injection and recovery wells. Average transmissivity during the sixteen steady-state time intervals varies between 6.00 x 10-6 m2/min. (6.46 x 10-5 ft2/min.) and 3.61 x 10-8 m2/ min. (3.89 x 10-7 ft2/min.). A trend toward decreas¬ing transmissivity is evident during two year of ISLM operations. This decreasing trend is found to correlate with a decreasing sulfuric acid concentration in injected leach solution, and suggests increasing geochemical precipitation within the deposit. Geostatistical analyses reveal a dynamic and anisotropic transmissivity structure within the target ore zone, that is dependent upon spatial and temporal changes in injection pressure and well configuration.

Automatic digital phase imaging should yield unbiased and representative characterization of gold ores. However, this is not a simple task due to low gold grades, fine grain size, possible complex mineralogy, nugget effect, etc. A critical test was done by two methods, using the same sections of a gold-rich ore: with an optical (OM) and with an electron microscope (EM). In general, the two methods are consistent and useful for ore processing. There are some minor differences e.g. the detection of very fine gold grains is enhanced by EM.

Noise control is an important consideration in the design and operation of coal preparation plants. It is essential to understand and control noise sources to provide a safe environment for operating personnel. The average noise exposure levels in a typical coal preparation plant generally range between 95 and 100 db. An operator should not be exposed to noise levels of this magnitude for more than 4 and 2 hr, respectively, according to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations. The major noise sources in a coal preparation plant include noise from impacting the inside surfaces of steel chutes, vibrating screens, coal crushers, pumps, motors, fans, and blowers. The magnitude of noise varies considerably from one situation to another. NOISE EXPOSURE IN COAL PREPARATION PLANTS Noise regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health and- ministration (OSHA) are accepted by MSHA relative to coal preparation plants. Fig. 14-43 shows a graph of the time of noise exposure in hours per day to which a worker can be exposed for each A-weighted sound level. According to this graph, a worker is permitted to spend 8 hr in a 90-db noise environment, but that time must be halved when the A-weighted sound level increases 5 db. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the length of time he is permitted to spend in that environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: where C is the actual duration of exposure at a given steady state noise level and T is the noise exposure limit for the level present during the time C According to MSHA regulations, the dosage, D, should not exceed one (1) for any worker for a full day of work. As an example of typical plant noise levels, vibratory screens and crushers emanate noise levels in excess of 90 db at a distance of 3 ft (0.9 m) with no material flow. PROLOGUE Nowadays, where production costs and energy costs are increasing and at the same time requirements in fineness and purity of industrial mineral products are getting higher and higher, industry has to look for more efficient grinding systems and developments to produce these products more economically. Therefore lots of new developments in high energy jet mill pulverizing have been made. In the main, however, these developments involved more or less just the new principle of fluidized bed jet pulverizers but not the older spiral jet mill principle. In some cases, especially in the filler industry where laminar minerals are used and higher aspect ratios are required, the spiral jet mill principle has advantages in a better delamination of these minerals. To comminute minerals down to products with a d97 < 3 µm, the specific energy consumption increases up to 2,000 kWh/t – 3,000 kWh/t or even more, depending on the grindability of the mineral. So the production of these fine materials is quite an expensive task. But jet mill grinding is and will be the most favorable method to produce micro-products and in the near future nano-products, despite the high energy consumption.

The study of soft soil (wastes above the rock bed) an issue of great importance in civil engineering, is usually addressed by drilling boreholes. This method is rather expensive and time-consuming and although the information obtained is usually accurate, on the other hand it is much localized. Recently published researches have demonstrated the ability of the combination of geophysical exploration methods to estimate the thickness of deposited wastes, which provides the layered structure of the study area and certain, method depended, mechanical parameters as well. By theory, the frequency of resonance of an upper layer is a function of its thickness and the average shear velocity in it. Furthermore, the application of H/V spectral ratios of micro-tremors is a fast, straight forward and cost effective methodology, yielding the determination of the main resonant frequency of the soil. Based on this framework, 20 microtremor measurements have been carried out in a Landfill in Heraklion-Crete. Some of these measurements were deliberately close to drilled sites, where the basement had been reached. Three electrical resistivity tomographies were also used, in order to define the landfill structure such as, thickness, determination of different wastes distribution in the study area and other parameters. In addition, estimation of predictive Vs using empirical relationship between shear velocity and penetration resistance (SPT?s) were also conducted. Knowing the thickness and the resonant frequency, we estimated the shear (Vs) velocity of the waste cover. The final Vs model was confirmed using the results from the Vs-SPT correlation. The combinative implementation of the above mentioned geophysical and geotechnical methods have successfully defined geometrical and geotechnical/geophysical characteristics of the area under investigation in a fast and cost effective way.

"In today’s fast paced, globally competitive world, reliability and machine uptime are of the utmost importance to a successful operation. Along with these targets more emphasis is being put on cost reduction and decreasing the environmental impact of the overall system. To achieve these goals, automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been used in many industries for years and are now becoming a common tool in the mining industry as well. These systems are able to provide proper lubrication amounts at the proper times autonomously, helping to keep the machines running smoothly while minimizing the physical support required. Copper mines in the southwest have begun utilizing auto lubrication to avoid mistakes and unplanned shut downs on critical equipment. This paper will describe the engineering behind these products and review case histories where these tools have been successfully utilized in the mining industry. INTRODUCTION In a dirty, dusty, wet environment, where machine uptime is imperative, proper lubrication of bearings is the only way to survive. With the push for cost reduction and mines striving to lower their environmental impact and increase worker safety according to MSHA guidelines, the old lubrication practices have come under scrutiny. It is no longer encouraged or cost effective to have maintenance personal walk from point to point throughout the entire mine pumping a shot of grease into each bearing once per shift. Automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been on the market for years but recently, as the market focus has changed and technology has developed, the use of these systems has begun to rise in the mining industry. Automatic lubrication systems can be as simple as a single point lubricator lubricating one (1) bearing or a more complex system lubricating numerous bearings. With system design, the automatic lubricator provides a preset amount of grease to a bearing at regular, predetermined intervals. The systems designed to lubricate more than one bearing contain grease pumps of some design and possibly PLC controllers which can be used to remotely adjust and monitor the system. As can be seen in Figure 1, the right amount of lubrication can be achieved much more reliably with automatic lubricators. Depending on application needs, the market now has products to fit almost every wish list. This paper is going to focus on the single point systems that are lower in cost but are still being effective."

Atlas Dewatering was contracted to install and maintain a groundwater control system for the new Bessarion Subway Station and the Tail Track Structure on the Toronto Transit Commission’s new Sheppard Subway Line. Atlas met the challenges presented by the project by closely reviewing the contract documentation provided by the Program Geotechnical Consultant, Golder Associates and by working with the general contractors, Bondfield Construction Company and PCL Constructors Eastern, inc., throughout the duration of both projects. In addition to concerns about soil loss, excessive settlement and seepage, the consultant was concerned about spreading hydrocarbon-contaminated groundwater between the two aquifers present at the Bessarion Station site. By installing a system of multi-level vacuum eductor wells around the perimeter of the excavation, Atlas was not only able to provide a dry excavation for construction, but, due to a unique well design was also able to prevent cross-contamination of the aquifers.

The use of diesel engines in underground hard-rock mines dates back to the late 1940s. For the first several years, they were used only occasionally, being limited to a few metal mines that experimented with crawler¬mounted front-end loaders, tractor-trailer hauling units, a few tractors for drill-compressor mounts, and utility cleanup machines. By the mid-1950s, track loaders had become commonplace in limestone mines and uranium mines on the Colorado Plateau in the United States, as well as in Canada. Use of crawler-mounted tractors as drill and compressor mounts also increased. By the end of the 1950s, rubber-tired loaders and some haulers began to replace the track-type machines and rail-mounted cars that had been in use. About 1960, the rubber-tired machines brought about a new era of underground mining mobility and flexibility, centered on a method commonly known as "trackless mining." Ultimately, many of the underground rail-type systems for loading and hauling were replaced by the trackless mining technique. ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS The size and nature of mineral deposits, plus ground control techniques, historically had dictated small open¬ings to the surface from many underground mines. The small mine openings led to the development of special rubber-tired loaders and haulers designed specifically for access through the small openings. However, some mines, particularly those in massive mineral deposits, are able to excavate and maintain very large openings, and some use modified room-and-pillar systems. With the large mine openings, the use of larger, more produc¬tive equipment such as that commonly found in surface mining becomes economical. In fact, productivity gen¬erally increases at a more pronounced rate than machine size increases because many of the larger machines were designed for heavy-duty shot-rock applications in surface mines and construction sites where the handling of blasted rock is common. Combining greater productivity often inherent in larger machines, with reduced downtime resulting from using fully developed machines with fast parts and service backup, some mine operators have been able to reduce material handling costs appreciably while reduc¬ing manpower requirements for operators and main¬tenance men. Large mine openings increase the amount of rock that must be handled in the development work, and they sometimes increase the dilution in stopes or rooms, de¬pending upon the dimensions of the ore zone. Providing adequate space for the unrestricted operation of large surface mining machines could, therefore, lead to more waste segregation and handling costs. It could also cause greater ore dilution that would result in a lower grade of ore being delivered to the processing plant. The tradeoffs between opposing cost factors must be reconciled and balanced to achieve the best overall cost of the crude ore, concentrates, or product. EQUIPMENT MODIFICATIONS Loaders and haulers designed for surface mining are seldom used underground in their standard con¬figurations without some modifications. If done, the modifications generally are made by the equipment dealer and/or the user, and the modifications usually include one or more of the following items: 1) The exhaust stack is lowered, and its direction is changed. Usually, it is repositioned horizontally to the rear, or it is fed into the engine fan to diffuse the exhaust gases. 2) The operator&apos;s position is lowered by either lowering the seat or changing the seat to a side mount. 3) The operator controls are adjusted to fit the new operator position. 4) Other components, such as the radiator and loader tower, are lowered. 5) Special bumper guards are mounted at the base of the radiator area. 6) An exhaust conditioner is mounted and con¬nected, using either a catalytic or a water-type condi¬tioner, or both. INTRODUCTION The radiological health significance of thorium-230 stems from its tendency to separate from the uranium238 parent, concentrate in bone tissues, and to subsequently irradiate the radiosensitive tissues lining the bone surfaces and the bone marrow. Indeed, thorium-230 may be the radionuclide which contributes the major dose following intake of natural uranium (Hartley and Pasternack 1979). This is reflected by the most recent recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, which specify the limits shown in Table I for the annual intake of radionuclides by occupationally exposed workers (ICRP 1979). Because of the greater toxicity and different metabolism of thorium-230, monitoring only for uranium-238 does not satisfactorily identify the possible hazard from thorium-230 nor does it provide any real indication of the metabolism or biodynamics of these two radionuclides. Thorium-230 has a half-life of 80,000 years and can be detected by direct counting of the alpha particles or photons emitted during its transformation to radium-226. The 4.69 and 4.62 MeV alpha particles are distinctive and specific indicators of thorium-230 and are emitted with abundances of 76% and 24%, respectively. The principal photon, a 68 keV gamma ray, is emitted in only 0.37% of the transformations and is, therefore, not useful for low level measurements. The other photons emitted have even lower yields, or, in the case of radium L x-rays, are non-specific and, hence, useless for quantification. High sensitivity measurements of thorium-230 currently are usually accomplished by wet washing of the sample substrate, quantitative chemical separation of thorium atoms, and, finally, direct measurement of the alpha particles emitted from a massless deposition. This procedure is complicated, expensive, and time-consuming, and subject to interferences from uranium, other actinides, and other thorium isotopes. Recently, the feasibility of low-level measurement of thorium-230 by neutron activation analysis (NAA) was demonstrated (Kathren, Desrosiers and Church 1980). Two principal variations of the NAA method were used in this study: 1) instrumental NAA technique and 2) post-irradiation radiochemical separations (RCS). Instrumental NAA procedure is a nondestrucive technique which is preferred because of its simplicity. The procedure is as follows: after irradiation with a known neutron fluence, the samples are transferred to a clean container and quantitative gamma spectroscopy performed. With the radiochemical separations procedure, the sample is initially treated as in the instrumental technique. However, after irradiation, a known amount of "carrier" is added to the sample. The element(s) of interest are then separated from the rest of the matrix by distillation, precipitation and extraction techniques. The resulting sample, now free of interferring elements, is then ready for gamma-ray analysis. The use of a "carrier" is to determine the loss of element-of-interest during the chemical separations process. The neutron activation cross section of thorium-230 has an epicadmium resonance value of 1,010 barns (Mughahghab and Garber 1976) and a thermal neutron cross section of 23 barns. The 25.52 hr thorium-231 produced releases two photons of significance: an 84 keV complex, (6.5% yield) and 25.6 keV (15% yield) (Lederer and Shirley 1978). The 84 keV complex is particularly useful for quantification since neither natural uranium, thorium, their daughters, or activation products emit photons in this region. However, the higher yield of the 25.6 keV photon may result in increased sensitivity if there are no other photons of similar energy emitted by other radionuclides in the sample. PRELIMINARY STUDIES Thorium-230 standard stock solution was prepared from a pure sample of the oxide purchased from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. From this stock solution a series of samples were prepared for irradiation in the TRIGA Mark I reactor at Reed College. Various dilutions were prepared as well as thorium-230 spiked urine samples. Irradiation times varied from 1 to 54 minutes in a neutron fluence rate of 1.84 x 1012 n/ cu m-sec. The neutron spectrum was abundant in thermal neutrons, having a Cd ratio of approximately 10. Treated urine samples were also analyzed by the NAA instrumental method. Analysis of untreated urine samples was not possible due to the high background

This study presents the methodology and proposals for the restoration of an abandoned quarry in the Greek island of Milos. The local data (soil, vegetation etc.) of the island were collected, analysed and compiled into thematic maps using Geographical Information Systems. The restoration plan was based on the G.I.S. database and suggested the revegetation of the disturbed lands with herbaceous (grasses and legumes) or woody (shrubs and trees) plants. Plants should be indigenous or from other areas with the same vegetation type. Herbaceous plants establish and grow easily protecting the soil from surface erosion. The revegetation success depends on the seed quality, planting season and methods as well as local environmental conditions. Our proposals aim to restore the abandoned quarry with methods that follow the natural succession of vegetation, have minimal environmental impact, low cost and the expected result will be similar to the surrounding undisturbed land.

The way and methods used for the surface mining of bauxite until the end of the twentieth century in the area of Ghiona, resulted in a significant burden to the natural environment, especially in the cases where it covered extended parts of forests and forest areas as well as important geomorphological formations. The impacts from the surface mining of bauxite which in fact constitute the object of this study relate mainly to the interruption of the natural continuity of the land relief and the alteration of the natural geomorphological activities and are due to: a) the alternating excavations with fronts of great heights, b) the depositions of large volumes of waste materials which originate from the revealing of the ore and c) the dense road network constructed in order to get access to the mine locations.
