Sodium silicate (water glass) is a modifier reagent widely used in flotation with the function of a depressant or dispersant. The interaction between sodium silicate and mineral surfaces is still not well understood. This investigation aimed to illuminate the sodium silicate action mechanism as a depressant in the flotation of the minerals quartz and calcite. The experiments were done with high-purity mineral samples in the particle size range below 147 µm. The microflotation tests in a modified Hallimond tube showed that, in all systems tested, the efficiency of sodium silicate increased with the concentration. At concentrations above 1,500 g/t, almost total depression (96% for calcite and 97% for quartz) was achieved. The variation of sodium silicate modulus did not alter the quartz flotation performance in the presence of amine (150 g/t). The most efficient depression pH range was observed between 5 and 8. Above pH 10, the depressant action of sodium silicate was negligible. The infrared spectra obtained at pH 7 after silicate contact showed the presence of the groups OH and Si-OH, both suggesting that the adsorption of the neutral species Si(OH)4, as well as siloxane groups (Si-O-Si), attributed to adsorption of polymeric species. Sharing electron pairs is the proposed adsorption mechanism between Si(OH)4 and polymeric species and the surface sites (Si-O on quartz and Ca-O on calcite). At pH 11, the electrostatic repulsion prevents the species adsorption, impairing the sodium silicate action.

To meet the growing need for CO2 capture and storage technology, Michigan Technological University is researching CO2 capture and storage using carbonate solutions. The objective of the present study was to increase the absorption rate of CO2 into the carbonate solution without reducing the absorption capacity of the solution. This approach used a polypropylene glycol methyl ether (PPGME) as a surfactant to chemically alter the gas bubble size. Experiments were conducted to study the absorption rate of CO2 at varying surfactant concentrations of 0, 0.12, 0.24, 0.36 and 0.48 g/L. Results showed that as the concentration of surfactant increased in solution, the absorption rate also increased. The CO2 absorption rate increased from 3.45 mmol/min CO2 at 0 g/L PPGME to 3.92 mmol/min CO2 at 0.48 g/L PPGME. This amounted to a 14% increase in the CO2 absorption rate with no decrease in absorption capacity of the solution.

Dust formation and the reaction mechanisms of copper matte particles were investigated in simulated flash-oxidation conditions. The granulated and ground matte consisted of 72% Cu, 4% Fe and 21 % S (by weight). Experiments were conducted by using a laminar flow furnace with a reaction-gas composition ranging from 20% to 75% O2 (by volume) in nitrogen. The particle feeding was carried out by a single-particle method, and samples were quenched after a specified reaction time ([~] 0.05 to 0.4 s) in a cold water film. Experimental temperatures ranged from 800o to 1,300o C. Chemical analysis was used to determine the degree of oxidation, and optical and scanning electron microscopes, combined with energy dispersive analysis, were used for characterization of the reacted particles.

"INTRODUCTION Mining activities must be safe and profitable. These two requirements influence each other. The purchase and implementation of safety improvements costs money. Injuries and illnesses at mines stop or delay production and may result in additional costs or a loss of profit. Other effects of injuries and illnesses include the negative influence on employee morale, corporate reputation and conflicts with contract partners. Based on this researchers asked the question: are mines with lower rates of injuries and illnesses more profitable than mines with a higher frequencies? One aspect of this research is the evaluation of the safety situation and the measurement of benefits of safety improvements in the German mining industry. In the following paper, this part of the research will be examined. The main aim is the evaluation of injury rates in different German mining sectors and regions in Germany. SELECTION OF GERMAN MINING OPERATIONS The research team decided to focus the study on the salt and potash and the aggregate and industrial minerals mining industries in Germany. These two mining industries are different in the number and size of operators, structure of the industry, pricing and markets. The selection of two different industries adds to the clarity of the evaluation. Salt and potash mining industry The German salt and potash industry is primarily located central Germany. All salt and potash mines in Germany are underground operations. In 2015, the German potash industry employed 8,100 employees and generated a total revenue of 2 billion Euros. German potash reserves include magnesium compounds like kieserite (MgSO4·H2O), in addition to sylvite (KCl) and carnallite (KMgCl3·6(H2O)). The German salt industry employed 2,300 people in 2015 and generated revenue of 800 million Euros (Krueger, 2015) There are seven mining companies with salt and potash operations: esco-european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, K + S Kali GmbH, Saline Luisenhall GmbH, GSES Glückauf Sondershausen Entwicklungs- und Sicherungs-gesellschaft GmbH, Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG, Wacker Chemie AG and Südsalz GmbH. In this way, esco – european salt company GmbH & Co. KG is an affiliated company. Esco was founded as a joint venture of K + S and Solvay in 2002, since 2004 K + S is the sole holder (esco - european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, 2016). Likewise, the Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG has a controlling interest in Südsalz GmbH (Südsalz GmbH, 2016). Aggregate and industrial minerals mining industry The aggregate mining industry in Germany is comprised of many small mining operations and relevant companies. According to the German Department of Economics (BMWi, 2015), the following industrial materials are classified as aggregates: fluorite, barite, kaolin, quartz and quartz sand, quartzite, silica, loamy and foundry sand, pegmatite sand, shale, clay, bentonite, schistose, limestone and dolomite, gypsum and anhydrite, basaltic lava and lava sand, gravel and split, pebble and silicic sand and peat."

Hundreds of highway and rail transportation tunnels in North America have been rehabilitated in the last two decades. Tunnel rehabilitation is usually dictated by an owner’s need to extend the working life of the structure, but typically has the added benefit of increasing capacity (greater speed or increased clearance) and enhancing safety. Not only has rehabilitation proven to be an economical alternative to new tunneling, but it can be safely accomplished by working during short work “windows” without taking the tunnel out of service. This paper presents methodology for planning and designing of tunnel rehabilitation projects, and case histories illustrate successful excavation and support technologies.

After passage by the Congress, Public Law 95-87, the "Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977" was signed by President Carter on August 3, 1977. This law, in its simplest form, was intended to control the environmental effects of surface coal mining and to ensure that mined land is restored to a condition equivalent to that prior to mining. Immediately after the signing, the wheels of government bureaucracy began turning to establish a new federal agency -the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement or OSM -in the Interior Department that would implement the provisions of the Act. Since this took time and because the Congress had not yet provided funding for OSM, a special task force was assembled within the Interior Department to begin the task of writing interim regulations to implement the Act. With respect to the use of explosives, the Act specified that a blasting plan be included in the application for a mining permit. The blasting plan will outline the procedures an operator will use to meet specified environmental protection performance standards. The performance standards established by the Act require explosives to be used only in accordance with existing state and federal laws and regulations and with regulations to be promulgated by the regulatory authority. The regulatory authority was defined as either a state agency operating under an approved state program or the OSM operating under a federal program. As a minimum, it was specified that the regulations should include provisions to require that: 1) a blasting schedule be published in a local newspaper and be mailed to local governments and to all residents living within 1/2 mile of the blasting site . 2) daily notice be given to residents in the area prior to blasting. 3) blast reports be prepared that are maintained for three years and available on request to the public. 4) blasts be designed to prevent injury to persons, damage to property outside the permit area, adverse impacts on underground mines and adverse effects on ground or surface water channels or availability outside the permit area. 5) upon request of residents or property owners within 1/2 mile of the permit area, preblast surveys shall

The East Central Interceptor Sewer, commonly known as the ECIS Project, is the largest public works construction project awarded by the City of Los Angeles. The complexity of this $240 million project, together with the challenge created by the mandated 1,000 calendar days for construction completion, make this project a major interest for the tunneling industry. This paper will describe the ECIS tunnel project, currently under construction by the Joint Venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Shea / Traylor / Frontier-Kemper. Mining of the18.5 km (about 11 miles) long and 4.7 m (15ft-4in) diameter tunnel is underway with four Tunnel Boring Machines mining at the same time. Details on the mining machines, muck handling systems, innovative construction sequence, together with mining progress will be given.

A major bauxite belt was discovered and evaluated from 1969 to 1974 by P. T. Alcoa Minerals of Indonesia in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The proven reserves of beneficiated bauxite are 800 million tons averaging 38.6% AA1203 and 3.0% RSiO2. Inferred reserves of washed bauxite are in excess of 2 billion tons. The bauxite occurs as capping of low lying hills which were formed during the post Paleogene peneplaination stage. The overburden varies from 0.6 to 3.8 meters and the nodular bauxite horizon from 2.2 to 5.2 meters. The deposits were formed by the in situ weathering of predominantly acidic and basic intrusive rocks.

Introduction In response to industry needs and requests, Joy Mining Machinery is aggressively evolving a "game changing" system of underground development mining machinery. This entry-development system (EDS) project is concentrated on providing clean, protected and ergonomic operator areas and a quantum leap in productivity. To meet these goals, a virtually continuous and automated mining system is needed. Operators must be able to efficiently and ergonomically perform required functions from a protected environment. Health-related issues, such as respirable dust and noise, must also be addressed. A new concept system of integrated face equipment, from the continuous miner to and including advancing the section belt and services, is needed. Phase I of the project was aimed at developing the bolting technology required. Through acquisition of Cram Australia and joint development efforts with Canyon Fuel Co., Joy now has this capability. The test platform, known as the Joy Multibolter, has successfully completed its trials at Canyon Fuel's SUFCo Mine (Fig. 1). These tests validated the bolting technology and operator protection and ergonomic issues. Phase II includes the development and testing of an integrated mining machine (IMM) capable of advancing a heading 1.5 m (5 ft) while simultaneously cutting a fullface width (single pass) and installing a complete bolt pattern. The IMM, unveiled at MINExpo 2000, incorporates the bolting technology of the Multibolter with automated full-face cutting. This machine was designed to meet Joy's stringent health, operator protection and 300m/d (1,000-ft/d) productivity goals. Phases III through V will include development of processes and integrated haulage, ventilation, power, material handling and section services advancing equipment. Processes and equipment developed will be designed for seamless integration into a complete entry development system. The focus of this paper is the new continuous miner (IMM) development, proposed testing and expectations for the EDS. The IMM is scheduled for commissioning and trials beginning in April 2001 at the SUFCo Mine. SUFCo Mine Canyon Fuel Co. is jointly owned by Arch Western Resources and the Itochu Corp. of Japan. It owns and operates three coal mines in Utah: the SUFCo Mine in Sevier County, the Skyline Mine in Carbon and Emery Counties and the Dougout Canyon Mine in Carbon County. Incorporating state-of-the-art-mining technology and advanced mine management practices, the SUFCo Mine is one of the most efficient underground coal mines in the world. The SUFCo Mine is located approximately 50-km (30 miles) northeast of Salina, UT, in the Wasatch Plateau portion of the Uinta coal basin. The mine property consists of 9,900 hm2 (24,470 acres) with approximately 118 Mt (130 million st) of recoverable reserves. Public utilities and industrial concerns purchase approximately 95% of the coal mined at SUFCo through short- or long-term contracts. Coal reserves are extracted by longwall mining, and the panels are developed using continuous miners. The longwall face at SUFCo Mine is 283-m (930-ft) wide, and the seam height ranges from 2.4 to 4 m (8 to 13 ft). The two development sections are in full operation using Joy 12CM12 continuous miners. Two super longwall panels, under development in the northeast portion of the lease block, are 4,270-m (14,000-ft) long with a 283-m (930-ft) wide longwall face. Twelve linear test foundations were constructed over an advancing longwall panel in southern Illinois, six were located along the centerline, and six in the maximum tension zone. One footing in each set was a control foundation constructed according to conventional practice. It suffered severe damage. Footings with reinforcing bare and post-tensioning had much smaller elongations, with the post-tensioning preventing cracking of the footing. Footing-soil interface treatments of plastic-on-sand and plastic-on-soil served to reduce damage. The addition of steel fibers to the footing had about the same effect as an interface treatment. Sill plate construction (butt-jointed versus lap-jointed) appeared to significantly affect the behavior.

The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) will be Britain’s first major new railway for over a century—a high-speed line running for 109km (68 miles) between St. Pancras station in London and the Channel Tunnel. The new line has been under construction since October 1998 and the first phase will open in October 2003. The project includes22km of twin 7.15m ID TBM bored tunnels under London and the River Thames, and the 3km North Downs Tunnel, the first major NATM tunnel to be constructed in the United Kingdom since the collapse of the Heathrow Express Tunnels in 1994. This paper will discuss the design of these tunnels and describe the construction progress to date. The discussion will include details of segmental lining design, TBM specification, and sprayed concrete lining design.

Both hydrometallurgical and vapometallurgical processes often involve ores that have been previously ground and size classified. When the valuable mineral is substantially liberated, the chemical reaction is likely to occur on the particle surface and the particle core will shrink as the reaction proceeds. If the chemical reaction products are solid materials then a solid shell, usually porous, will form around the shrinking core. This is known as the core/shell or topochemical reaction model. Using a spherical approximation for the particles, equations have been developed to express the extent of chemical conversion of the particle, depending on which one of the following process or mass transport steps is rate controlling:1 (1) chemical reaction at the particle surface, (2) diffusion through the thickening reaction product shell or (3) mass transport through a boundary layer surrounding the particle. In a previous paper2 these equations were coupled with the Gates -Gaudin-Schuhmann equation 3 4 describing the distribution of particle sizes resulting from comminution of rocks and other brittle solids to develop reaction yield curves expressing the weight fraction of metal or other valuable component of the feed that was chemically converted as a function of residence time. This was done for (a) batch, (b) continuous plug flow and (c) continuous back-mix flow (continuous stirred tank) reactors or process vessels. Characterization of an ore or mill product is routinely performed by time consuming and tedious chemical analyses, sink-float separations, etc. Additionally, these types of tests do not provide data concerning the interrelations and interlocking of the mineral constituents. This paper discusses some of the applications and capabilities of the Minerals and Material Science Research Center at The University of Alabama. Back-scattered electron images of coal, oil shale, complex suldfide, and tantalium ores were acquired using a JEOL 8600 electron microprobe with a NORAN (formerly Tracor Northern] 8500 image analysis system. Methods of analysis and typical results are discussed.

Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) service to New York City is limited to Penn Station on the West Side of Manhattan, which is operating at its practical capacity for the commuter railroad. This situation imposes serious considerations for future growth and limits the destination of many Long Island commuters. The East Side Access Project will provide a connection of the LIRR to the landmark Grand Central Terminal (GCT)on the East Side of Manhattan. The construction of the connection will require significant tunneling and underground work utilizing a variety of construction techniques. In Queens, the connection will require five soft ground tunnels using pressurized face tunnel boring machine. In Manhattan, the connection will require a series of rock tunnels and caverns connecting to two deep large station caverns under GCT to accommodate eight tracks with four platforms in a stacked configuration. The caverns housing train rooms are connected to the lower level of GCT where a large concourse will be provided. With a budget of $4.3 Billion, The East Side Access Project is the largest transportation project ever undertaken in New York City. This paper provides an overview of the project, discusses its environmental and the engineering challenges, and provides an insight into the design development to date.

HOARDS was written to fill the needs of an active minerals explorer. It permits retrievals using a number of spatial functions as well as direct relational logic, and enables statistical analysis within the system. Specified for use by non-EDP oriented staff, HOARDS also offers functions to subset, transform points to polygons of influence, and to calculate polygon overlap, enabling ready and efficient conversion of databases containing point oriented sample data to area/volume mine planning format. Both the design and implementation to date, and proposed enhancements are discussed.

Longwall coal mines are frequently located in steep mountainous areas with narrow valleys. In order to protect surrounding watersheds and residential structures, support areas are left under the valleys. However, the indirect subsidence effects to the residential structures due to the potential topography effects can be a serious problem. The present study examines a longwall mine in southern West Virginia located in an area with an average slope of about 30°, or 58%, and with an overburden depth that varies from 49 to 376 m (160 to 1,235 ft). A comprehensive investigation was carried out to assess the subsidence and topography effects, as well as other ground control issues at this site. Surface and subsurface movements and deformation were predicted and their direct effects on nearby streams and structures were assessed. The potential and indirect subsidence influences of surface topography effects were assessed. The techniques and results of this investigation are presented in this paper. It shows that the direct and indirect subsidence effects on the streams and residential structures should be insignificant. The post-mining observations agreed well with this study.

The ever-increasing demand for steel and the subsequent depletion of high-grade ores requires the massive utilization of low-grade iron ores. In the present study, an iron ore slime sample containing 56.1% Fe was investigated using physical beneficiation, carbothermal reduction, and a microwave-assisted process; however, physical beneficiation and microwave exposure were found to be inefficient as they yielded lower iron recovery. Using coconut shell as an alternative reductant was found to be promising and does not lead to the formation of higher iron oxides, such as fayalite and wustite phases. The microwave-assisted carbothermal reduction was found at par with conventional reduction, saving time and heating. The optimum magnetic concentrate obtained in both carbothermal reduction routes (microwave and muffle furnace: Fe grade, Fe recovery, and yield of 64.3, 97, and 84%, and 67, 99, and 83%, respectively) are suitable for alternative iron-making or blast furnace units.

"A paper called “Global Experience with Soft Ground and Weak Rock Tunneling under Very High Groundwater Heads” was presented at the North American Tunneling 2006 conference (Holzhäuser et.al 2006). It summarized global experience with earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry shield tunneling on nine projects that encountered groundwater heads ranging from 6 to 11 bar. Since then, additional projects have been completed with groundwater heads ranging from 7 to 15 bar. Of these, the high pressure tunneling experience on the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project in Nevada and on the Eurasia Tunnel (Istanbul Strait Crossing) had the greatest lengths of tunneling at face pressure over 7 bar. Experience with sustained pressurized face tunneling at groundwater heads over 7 bar and risk management observations are the focus of this paper. INTRODUCTION High groundwater head, particularly at 7 bar or more, is a major challenge when tunnelling in high permeability ground and on drives long enough to require cutter changes. It has a strong impact on design and operation of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) in order to protect the main bearing from contamination, prevent excessive groundwater inflow, ensure face stability and enable access to the cutterhead and excavation chamber for maintenance. During the past 20 years, TBM manufacturers and suppliers have made tremendous improvements that allow tunneling at groundwater pressures to 17 bar or more. The most significant risk with high pressure tunneling is generally that of excavation chamber access and potentially the cutterhead for cutter changes, cutterhead repairs and TBM maintenance. Hyperbaric interventions are possible and safety variances have been approved for saturation dive interventions at pressures as high as 17 bar (Lake Mead Intake No. 3). While high pressure hyperbaric intervention equipment is available and safety approvals can be obtained at many locations, few contractors consider the cost and risk of hyperbaric interventions over 7 bar to be acceptable as the primary means of excavation chamber access. Experience with high pressure tunneling prior to 2006 was summarized in a paper entitled “Global Experience with Soft Ground and Weak Rock Tunneling under Very High Groundwater Heads” (Holzhäuser et.al 2006). That paper provided information on 9 projects: South Bay Ocean Outfall, San Diego; Channel Tunnel (French Side), France; Storebaelt Tunnel, Denmark; 4th Elbe Tunnel, Germany; Wesertunnel, Germany; Westerschelde Tunnel, Netherlands; St. Petersburg Red Line, Russia; Nara Prefecture Water Conveyance Tunnel, Japan; and Tokyo Wan Aqua Line Tunnel, Japan – see Table 1."

This paper reports on recent modeling efforts to analyze the eastern U.S. steam coal market with a cross-sectional econometric as well as a quadratic programming approach. The background to coal modeling is examined first. The particular aspect of the steam coal market to be modeled are then presented and the corresponding coal model described. Both empirical results and rigorous mathematic pertubation analysis are presented. Conclusions are then drawn regarding potential modeling applications in the policy area.
