The leaching behavior of copper powders recovered from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) was investigated using electrogenerated chlorine and aeration in a sulfuric acid solution with added NaCl and CuSO4. Various parameters were studied to understand the mechanism of the copper leaching. When the current density increased from 0 to 0.1 A/cm2, the temperature from 30 to 60° C, agitation speed from 100 to 400 rpm, and the size ranged from below 75 to 150 µm, the leaching ratios of copper powders increased. The leaching kinetics were analyzed using a shrinking core model: 1-(1-X)1/3 = kt, and the leaching process was chemically controlled with an activation energy of 14.7 kJ/mol due to Cl- ion catalysis. The ratios of [Cu+]/[Cu2+] at various temperatures (30, 40, 50, 60 and 70° C) showed a periodic variation with the increasing of the leaching time. The redox potentials of the leaching solution and copper leaching ratios in different conditions were measured. The result indicates that dissolved oxygen achieved the dissolution of coppers and electrogenerated chlorine can promote the dissolution of copper powders and improve the reaction rate of kinetics in the presence of oxygen.

The Electric Power Research Institute Energy Supply Program is developing coal supply forecasts. By coal supply forecasts I mean the future relationships between coal price and production levels. A representative supply curve is shown in Figure l. It will make the rest of my presentation clearer if at this point I give you some background about EPRI and the Energy Supply Program. EPRI is funded by the nation's electric utility industry to develop new technologies for the production and conservation of electricity. Most of the research is conducted by outside contractors. We participate in joint projects with the Department of Energy and other organizations. The Energy Supply Program is one of three "economic" programs. The other two are Energy Demand and Conservation, and Systems. The Systems Program's main function is to provide the means to integrate the output of the other two Programs. The primary function of the "economic" programs is to provide information pertaining to future energy prices, availability, requirements, etc. to the EPRI personnel planning R&D programs. A secondary role that is becoming more and more important is providing information of direct use to the electric utility industry. I should note that the results of all EPRI's contract work are available to the general public. A "Coal Supply Analysis System" is being developed for EPRI by Charles River Associates. To the extent possible it will draw upon existing work, but much additional work needs to be done in the area of coal supply economics.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) project is authorized by legislation to provide a demonstration of the safe disposal of radio- active wastes generated by the national defense programs and activities of the United States. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proceeding with the implementation of the WIPP project in accordance with the "Department of Energy National Security and Military Application of Nuclear Energy Authorization Act of 1980" (PL 95-164).

Cyanide is one of the most used reagents in the precious metal extraction process; as well as the most efficient from the point of view of the dissolution process; but it is also a toxic product that requires a lot of care in handling. Likewise, the residual solutions of the process must be followed because they can be a risk of contamination of water, animals and human health. In the artisanal processes of obtaining gold and silver, neutralization of the residual solutions is used to passivate the present cyanide. During this process ammonium cyanate is formed which decomposes rapidly in the presence of air and sunlight in carbon dioxide and ammonia gas, contributing to the greenhouse effect. In this work the use of the ammonium cyanate obtained in the process of neutralization of the cyanide solutions as a reagent to obtain urea is proposed. Urea was obtained indirectly through the use of the reagent kit UREA/BUN-COLOR. The process is effective at pH ≤ 4.5 with a rapid increase in solution temperature, and addition of hydrogen peroxide. The urea crystals begin to form at 50°C. The cyanide / urea ratio obtained was 1 / 7.5 INTRODUCTION In the processes of extractive gold metallurgy, the use of cyanide leaching is perhaps the most widely used method worldwide; by the ease of operation, its low cost and high levels of precious metal recovery. However, neutralization, in most processing plants, is not done properly, and leftovers of solution with free cyanide are dumped in concentrations harmful to the environment, in particular animals and humans. Cyanide can enter surface water through releases from industries using cyanides. Due to its high toxicity, the presence of cyanide in water is a matter of great concern (Jawale et al., 2017). The pollution generated by the effluents from the leaching of gold ores is one of the main obstacles of social opposition presented by mining activity due to the impact of both surface and groundwater. During the cyanide decomposition process, a compound known as ammonium cyanate OCN(NH4), which is a raw material for the manufacture of urea, CO(NH2)2 is generated. In the case of good neutralization, cyanide is no longer a toxic compound through oxidizing reagents, but as a result, there is the generation and emission of ammonia and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, generating both a greenhouse effect (Gómez, 2012). This is evidenced by the strong effervescence of the reaction, and a penetrating smell of ammonia, which can irritate respiratory mucous membranes and eyes; however because they are greenhouse gases they are considered pollutants.

"A biodegradable flocculant was produced during growth of Bacillus megaterium. The major component of the bioflocculant was found to be a polysaccharide composed of some proteins. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis revealed the presence of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in the bioflocculant, and thermal characterization by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed the transition and crystalline melting point at 90-105°C. The effects of bioflocculant dosage and pH on the flocculation of mineral suspensions were evaluated. The bioflocculant exhibited good flocculating capability on mineral suspensions and achieved flocculating efficiencies of 90 percent for kaolinite and 85 percent for hematite suspensions at a dosage of only 5 mL/L. The maximum arsenite removal was found to be 90 percent at a bioflocculant dosage of 2 g/L, which is better than traditional chemical flocculants. This study demonstrates that microbial bioflocculants have potential for application in environmental cleanup, such as in the flocculation of mineral fines and in the remediation of solutions that contain toxic heavy metals.IntroductionBioflocculants are biopolymers produced by microorganisms during their growths. The predominant components of a bioflocculant are extracellular polymeric substances such as glycoprotein, protein, cellulose and nucleic acid (Salehizadeh and Shojaosadati, 2001). Bioflocculants have gained much wider attention due to their biodegradability and safety. In recent years, the study of bioflocculants has attracted wide attention. Bioflocculants can be nontoxic, harmless and eco-friendly. Normally, they exhibit different functional properties, serving as stabilizer, dispersant or thickener. Among these properties, flocculation is of major interest. For example, Phormidium sp. strain J-1, isolated from a drainage channel, exhibited excellent flocculation activity for bentonite particles in liquid suspension (Fattom and Shilo, 1984). A protein bioflocculant produced by Rhodococcus erythropolis could efficiently flocculate suspended solids while losing their flocculating activity by enzymatic digestion (Kurane et al., 1994, Takeda et al., 1991). Klebsiella sp. strain S11 screened from activated sludge was unable to flocculate without the addition of calcium chloride (Dermlim et al., 1999)."

INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Designers built a high-lift, adjustable and portable module specific for this application Having two bench systems capable of each producing the required feed for the power plants required computerized control processes to control on-line production. RSLinx, RSLogix, and RSView were chosen as the communication and control software, and a Data Highway Plus serves as the communication backbone. Single-unit separations in mineral processing are typically not able to meet the strict purity requirements for consumer markets. As a result, multistage separation circuits are often employed. Because these circuits represent a large and inflexible capital investment, process engineers are careful to ensure that the circuit is optimally designed to meet the desired objectives. The set of interdependent decisions that constitute the circuit design may involve the selection of different unit operations, different equipment specifications, different operational parameters, and different unit interconnections. To assist circuit designers in assessing these options, researchers have attempted to establish standard design methodologies that involve various techniques and tools.

The development of flotation machines since the first industrial use of the process can be divided into three stages. The first, up to about 1930, was marked by diversity in the means for contacting floatable mineral with the air/ water interface and for generating the interface, as well as in cell design. By 1927 Taggart (1) could list 170 patents covering flotation cells, and he mentioned dozens which were or had been in operation. He divided cells into eight categories according to design, type of separating interface, and where in the cell and how separation took place. These were: (1) Film or skin flotation with wet or dry oiling of surfaces; (2) pulp body process with bubbles generated chemically by pressure reduction, by vacuum or by boiling; (3) agitation-froth processes involving local supersaturation with air; (4) bubble column; (5) pneumatic; (6) cascade; (7) subaeration; and (8) combination and miscellaneous types and processes. Most widely used then were the agitation-froth, sub- aeration, pneumatic types. By 1943 a significant reduction in categories had occurred to the two main divisions of mechanical and pneumatic cells according to whether agitation and aeration were (a) by an impeller with or without compressed air, or (b) by compressed air alone. Cells at that time were still relatively small; the Morenci Concentrator completed in 1942 used 432 1.7m3 (60 cu ft) Fagergrens for roughing 45,000 and later up to 55,000 t/d.

Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel, called Straight Creek Tunnel during construction is located 60 miles west of Denver, Colorado at 11, 160 ft. elevation. It is 8, 510 feet long, and carries two lanes of 1-70 traffic under the Continental Divide. This paper describes improvements and changes made in construction methods for utilities, concrete lining, ceiling, wall covering and paving to allow maximum offsite fabrication and activity overlap resulting in a one-year faster completion for traffic. The substantial changes proposed on a design-and-construct basis by the contractor and put into effect after State approval were: 1. Substitution of ductile iron and thick-wall P.V. C. pipes for clay pipes allowing placement and operation before hole-thru. 2. Outside pre-assembly of large rebar mats, using a novel tension-splice with cable clamps. 3. Arch concrete placement method modified to make 4, 322 ft. of lining in 10 weeks possible. 4. Safety barriers precast and epoxy coated offsite instead of cast-in-place and tile faced. 5. Prestressed hollow ceiling slabs with porcelainenamel coated steel sheets assembled offsite, instead of in-place glazed tile and in-place cast concrete ceiling. 6. Glazed tile wall panels 8 ft. long by 11 ft. high assembled off site and erected using vacuum pad mounted on special lift. 7. Asphalt paving while other work proceeded, instead of reinforced concrete slab and asphalt overlay. Work started in January 1968, but advance came to a one-year standstill for major structural redesign and negotiations of a new agreement during 1970. Using multiple drift construction followed by top-heading and bench excavation, it then progressed to hole-thru in July 1972. As a result of art 18-month overlap of activities the tunnel was opened for traffic only eight months later in March 1973. Gibbons and Reed Company of Salt Lake City, Utah sponsored the joint Venture of Al Johnson-Gibbons and Reed-Western Paving-Kemper during 1971, 1972, and 1973. The tunnel was the subject of a previous paper delivered at the RETC '72 in Chicago by R. C. Hopper, T. A. Lang, and A. A. Mathews, describing geology, unusually severe structural loading and multiple-drift tunnel excavation.

"The Colorado School of Mines has used the Edgar Mine in Idaho Springs as an experimental mine to teach students since 1921. Since the school acquired the former gold, silver, lead and zinc mine, countless students have received hands-on engineering lessons on their way to earning mining engineering degrees. On Dec. 14, the House Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a historic field hearing about the future of mining education in the United States in a classroom about 300 m (1,000 ft) inside the Edgar Mine. Representatives Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Rob Bishop (R-UT), Cresent Hardy (R-NV) and Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) were on hand for the first ever congressional hearing held in a mine where they heard testimony supporting the Mining School Enhancement Act, which was introduced to Congress by Hardy and Perlmutter on Oct. 9, 2015. The act, which is part of a larger mining development and reclamation reform package, seeks to address the absence of a viable pipeline necessary to replenish current faculty vacancies in United States Mining Schools. “What better place to hold a hearing to discuss the need for future mining engineering experts,” Subcommittee Chair Lamborn said in his opening statement. “It is a need felt by industry, states, the federal government as well as nonprofits.” The Mining School Enhancement Act would redirect millions of dollars in fees that are being collected from active mining operations to fund the research and educational programs at engineering schools with mining programs. Those fees now are being used in the form of grants awarded by the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMRCA)."

Hydrometallurgy has a well-known and established role in the production of manganese metal (1) and manganese compounds, including battery grade manganese dioxide (2). Also, several leaching processes have been developed and applied at various times for the recovery of manganese from low grade ores (3). Recently, interest in the hydrometallurgy of manganese has been stimulated by the problems presented in the processing of sea nodules (4). Fumes and dusts from the ferro-manganese furnaces also offer a potential field for the application of manganese leaching techniques (5). In treating low grade manganese ores a major requirement of the leaching process is that it should dissolve manganese from a mixture of manganese and iron oxides. The most selective reagent for this purpose is ammonium carbamate applied after preliminary pyrometallurgical reduction of the ore (6). Since soluble carbamate complexes of the postulated type (7) are formed by both manganous and ferrous, but by neither manganic nor ferric, ions, selectivety of manganese leaching is achieved by control of the reduction operation to yield, essentially MnO and Fe304? A potential improvement to this two step process would be to simultaneously reduce and selectively leach the manganese in one hydrometallurgical operation. This possibility has been experimentally studied and the results are described below. A coal mine located in southern West Virginia recently set a world record for daily low-seam coal production using a Cat automated longwall plow system. In a 24-hour period on April 10 and 11, 2014, the Pinnacle Mine longwall produced 32,411 t (35,724 st) from the Virginia Pocahontas No. 3 Seam, in a seam height of just 1.42 m (56 in.) along the 298-m (980-ft) longwall face. The Pinnacle Mine, located near the town of Pineville and owned by Cliffs Natural Resources Inc., an international mining and resource company, operates a Cat Gleithobel GH1600 Longwall Plow System. A previous record was set by this system at Pinnacle in August, 2012 when 29,423 t (32,430 st) were mined in a 24-hour period. The record was set by the same system, mining its second panel after a comprehensive rebuild was performed by Carter Machinery, the Cat Dealer in that area. The rebuild encompassed a complete rebuild of the headgate and tailgate armored face conveyor (AFC) drive, the headgate and tailgate special AFC pans, the stageloader drives and return end, the complete crusher and all gearboxes for the plow, AFC and stageloader. Carter acquired the rights to sales and aftermarket support associated with the former Bucyrus mining products, both surface and underground, in 2013. ?Supporting and rebuilding a longwall plow system was a new experience for the Carter service team,? said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar Global Mining Sales and Support Division. ?However, given the record production results attained by the rebuilt system at Pinnacle, it?s obvious that they are up to the challenge of supporting the underground product lines at the same high standards and quality level that they have been delivering for many years on the traditional Cat surface mining products.? Tom Bluth, president of Caterpillar Global Mining Products Division, said, ?Caterpillar congratulates the Pinnacle team for this great achievement. Without their efforts and dedication this record would not have been possible. To safely deliver that kind of output from such a thin seam is remarkable. We have been privileged to work alongside their team to demonstrate the capabilities of Cat longwall mining technology. ?

Passage of the Public Utilities Regulatory Policy Act ("PURPA") in I 978 created an entirely new industry that is referred to today as the Independent Power Producers ("IPP"). Requirements of project owners, environmental compliance, project design, the financial community and most of all, the need to be a low-cost producer presented a unique situation for the sourcing and the utilization of fuels. Depending on the specific type of project being developed, (e.g. coal-fired, wood/biomass, natural gas, petroleum coke or a blend of several fuel types) and the type of boiler design, it is important to acquire fuels that will optimize both the project's operating efficiency and flexibility. This paper will focus on the acquisition of fuel for coal-fired projects, but will describe the necessary steps in the sourcing, contracting for, and the utilization of fuels and transportation resources in the IPP industry today.

The identification of the major subsidence areas in the Western Kentucky Coal Field has been made to distinguish the subsidence phenomena on the basis of geographical location Further, this identification process is based upon selected critical geological, topographical, and mining features in the coal fields. The proposed identification of the regions is derived from a comparison of the subsidence potential in a particular area. The most likely severe subsidence areas are compared to those with the probable low subsidence severity. The combination of certain geological and mining parameters involved allows for the derivation of a classification of the subsidence potential. It is recommended that further site specific studies should be performed on this area.

Relatively few longwall mines in the U.S. operate under multiple seam conditions where the two seams are less than 200 ft apart. This paper describes the experience of six that do. These operations are located in PA, WV and UT, and include examples of both undermining and overmining. Some operate above or beneath their own workings, others are in historic mining districts and must contend with abandoned mines that are decades old. The lessons that these mines have learned cover a broad range of topics, including: • Whether to stack gateroads or place them under old gob areas; • How to size pillars and select artificial support to cross longwall stop lines; • How to use yield pillars to minimize multiple seam stresses and coal bump potential, and; • When to anticipate the creation of pathways for gas, water, or oxygen between current and abandoned gobs.

The higher stress zone adjacent to an underground opening causes a velocity anomaly that can be mapped in favorable conditions with an acoustic cross-borehole logging system. Bureau personnel used a specialized system at the Colorado School of Mines test site near Idaho Springs, Colorado, to locate the Edgar Mine tunnel and its associated stress anomaly. Data from the logging system' were processed with a tomographic image reconstruction algorithm to map the opening and the location of the high velocity zone around the opening. The velocity imagery from tomographic analysis compared favorably with predictions from numerical modelling of the location of the stress anomaly.

This report concerns the successful construction of Contract No. 287 of the Northeast Side Relief Sewer System for the Metropolitan Sewerage District of the County of Milwaukee. The contract involved the construction of approximately 3316 meters (10,880 feet) of tunnel concrete lined to 1.83 meters (72 inch) internal diameter; 30.48 meters (100 feet) of 1.83 meters (72 inch) reinforced concrete pipe jacked-in-place; a river crossing of approximately 107 meters (350 feet); 197 meters (647 feet) of 1.83 meters (72 inch) reinforced concrete pipe in open-cut; several diversion and flow monitoring structures; and miscellaneous manholes and appurtenances. The contract proposal, which was extremely prescriptive, did allow alternative methods of primary support consisting of precast reinforced concrete segments, steel liner plates, steel ribs with wood lagging, and combinations thereof in designated areas. The specifications required the contractor to designate which support scheme it intended to use. The specifications also required compressed air as a means of ground water control for approximately 2316 meters (7600 feet) of tunnel. The alternative selected in the bid proposal was the support method consisting of steel ribs and wood lagging for 2263 meters (7425 feet) of tunnel and steel liner plates for the remaining section. Shaft supports, by specification, were designed to be steel liner plate with steel ribs varying in size from 4.27 meters to 6.10 meters (14 foot O.D. to 20 foot O.D. ).

"To meet the growing need for CO2 capture and storage technology, Michigan Technological University is studying CO2 capture using alkali-based solvents. The objective of the present study was to find a way to increase the absorption rate of CO2 into an alkali solution without reducing the absorption capacity of the solution. One approach to increasing absorption rate is to use a surfactant to chemically alter the gas bubble size. The surfactant chosen for the study was a neutral-charge polypropylene glycol methyl ether (PPGME) with a molecular weight of 200. Experiments were conducted to study the absorption rate of CO2 at varying surfactant concentrations. Results showed that as the concentration of PPGME increased in solution, the absorption rate also increased. The CO2 absorption rate increased from 3.45 x 10-3 mol/min CO2 at 0g/L PPGME to 3.92 x 10-3 mol/min CO2 at 0.48 g/L PPGME. This amounted to a 14% increase in the CO2 absorption rate with no decrease in the absorption capacity of the solution. IntroductionChemical absorption using an amine solvent is currently the most mature carbon capture and storage technology available. Amines are advantageous in that they have a fast CO2 absorption rate, which leads to a high CO2 removal efficiency. However, amine absorption has some considerable drawbacks, such as high energy requirements, high equipment corrosion rates, amine degradation in the presence of oxygen, high waste generation and a large increase in plant footprint if new equipment is constructed (Herzog and Golomb, 2004; D’Alessandro et al., 2010). Due to these drawbacks, Michigan Technological University (MTU) is studying CO2 absorption using alkali-based solvents, which address the above disadvantages of amine solvents."

"Yielding support systems for application in underground construction have a long history, primarily in mining. Typical examples are tunnels subject to loading conditions that lead to overstressing of the newly installed support or existing tunnel structures in active fault zones. Recent applications for tunnel rehabilitation projects unveiled the capabilities and flexibility of combined yielding support systems presented in this paper. Frequently, the main requirements for tunnel rehabilitation applications are a fast, safe, and simple installation along with the need for flexibility with regards to existing tunnel geometries. A combined support system consisting of steel sets with yielding connections and special groutable hoses has proven to be an efficient support measure providing a multitude of advantages compared to conventional rehabilitation approaches. The presented yielding support system provides an immediate and active support, while it allows for controlled yielding upon experiencing loads beyond its support capacity. INTRODUCTION The excavation of underground spaces leads to redistribution in the existing stress regime. This load redistribution goes along with deformations in the surrounding rock mass. Magnitude and duration of these deformations depend on the tunnel’s depth and geological conditions, but also on the installed support system. Modern civil tunneling infrastructure has generally an envisioned service life of about 120 years. Conventional tunneling provides typically a dual support system, split into the initial (or primary) and final (or secondary) lining. A typical design principle in civil tunneling is to let the vast majority of deformations acting on the initial lining cease, before the final lining is installed. Based on this approach, the loading on the final lining is significantly reduced and signs of overstressing, such as cracking of the lining, are typically limited to the initial lining. However, special cases in swelling and squeezing ground require different approaches, including yielding support systems."

Interstate 70 running into the mountains west of Denver, CO is the main access to the state?s numerous ski areas and other tourist attractions. As such, the highway is a vital part of Colorado?s economy. Due to the mountainous terrain in which it winds, I-70 is limited to two lanes in either direction. And, during the past few decades, the volume of traffic has increased to the point where motorists encounter major delays, particularly on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings heading west from Denver, and then again on Sunday evenings heading east. In the past, those delays occurred mostly during the ski season. However, many of the mountain towns have been successful in turning their resorts into year-round vacation destinations. A good move economically, but the pressure added to I-70 has caused even greater traffic delays, sometimes to the point where some Front Range residents avoid trips to the mountains.
