PT Freeport's Mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia uses a number of 500m long vertical ore passes to transfer ore from the open pit to the mill. The current tonnages moved are in the order of 125 ktpd and this will be increasing to 240 ktpd. This amount of falling rock generates high pressures in the ore bins, when ore feed is terminated the pressure is no longer constrained resulting in back blasting of materials and air up the ore passes. Three methods were tested to try and eliminate or reduce this problem; recirculation of the entrained air, widening of the orepasses and relieving the pressure of the back blast. The final method proved to be the most effective in the short term. As a long term solution the orepasses are currently undergoing widening.

Selective Flocculation process development generally involves single mineral flocculation tests to identify the appropriate polymer and experimental conditions for achieving the desired selectivity. Invariably the selectivity predicted on the basis of such tests is not realized when mixed mineral tests are conducted. A systematic experimental investigation revealed that adsorption of the polymer on various substrates is critical to selecting the suitable flocculent. Simultaneously, a mathematical model was developed to predict the overall process efficiency with a given polymer. In this paper, results of these efforts to scientifically design a suitable selective flocculation process are presented.

In recent years, there has been a growing realization of the importance of ground water as a national resource and increasing concern that this resource be properly managed and protected from a variety of pervasive practices that endanger it. Aquifers have been adversely affected in every region of the country. In dealing w.ith the underground water program, EPA will have the following objectives: to protect human health, and to protect and conserve an important national resource. In pursuing these objectives, EPA will take economic consequences and other national objectives (e.g., energy) into account. EPA intends to pursue these objectives in full partnership with the States. Generally the States should retain the lead in protecting ground water.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are participating jointly in a research program to evaluate strength characteristics and air-leakage resistance of various proposed seal designs for use in underground coal mines. Over 20 full-scale seals were constructed in the Bureau's experimental mine at the Lake Lynn Laboratory, air-leakage tested, then subjected to pressure pulses of 0.14 MPa or greater. A discussion on the experimental procedure, construction techniques, and the explosion and air-leakage test results is presented. Four types of construction material were used during this seal testing program: solid-concrete-blocks, low-density foam blocks, cementitious foam, and wood blocks. Only one of the solid-concrete block designs using a mortared thick wall survived the explosion and air-leakage tests. Most of the low-density foam block and cementitious foam seal designs were judged to meet the requirements to be considered a coal mine seal. One of the wood block convergence seal designs failed explosion testing. Based, in part, on these research findings, several alternative seal design constructions using low-density foam blocks, cementitious foam, or wood have been approved by MSHA for use in coal mines.

The past decade has seen remarkable progress by the railroads both in equipment and concepts in the handling of dry bulk. materials. While such shipments have always been an important part of the traffic handled by the railroads I little was done to improve the efficiency of handling or toward attempted optimization of equipment design before 1960. Several developments at about that time turned attention to this important segment of railroad traffic. One was the construction of a successful coal slurry pipe-line. Another was the promise of substantial economy in electric power transmission by ultrahigh voltage systems and finally, came the growing technological and economic feasibility of nuclear fuel electric generating plants. Each of these developments was a threat to the coal traffic of the railroads --the most important single commodity they handled in terms of revenue and tonnage. By the mid-1950's I Southern Railway management had become most concerned with its growing investment in freight car equipment and the declining revenue productivity of the capital employed. Additionally I there was substantial concern with the loss of business and potential losses in the area of the railroad's greatest economic advantage --bulk commodity movements. In 1958 a small team was established to study this problem. They arrived at two conclusions. The first conclusion was that within limits of maximum gross allowable weight on rail the lowest unit net capacity cost of investment came at maximum allowable gross weight per car unit. The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 (NWPA) assigns the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) the responsibi1it.y of locating, constructing. operating, closing and decommissioning a nuclear waste repository. Prior to submittal of a licensee application to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the DOE is required by 10 CFR part 60 to conduct a program of site characterization for the site to be described in such application. Site characterization includes an exploration and research program in the field and laboratory to determine the geologic conditions and ranges of those parameters which are necessary for determining the suitabi1it.y of the site as a geologic repository. The information thus collected should be able to establish with reasonable assurance that the public and environment will be adequately protected from the hazards associated with a repository at the site. This paper demonstrates by example a geostatistical approach which, on the basis of the existing limited data base, can be used to evaluate (1) whether existing information on a certain parameter is adequate to be considered representative. (2) if additional information is required, where should the additional sampling or testing be performed, and (3) whether the new1.y acquired data along with the existing information constitute representative data.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the stability of the mass flow rates and average pellet size in the different streams of an industrial-scale balling circuit. The variables in this study include water content, drum speed and fresh feed rate. It was found that both the mass flow rates and pellet diameter are greatly disturbed when a change, positive or negative, in any of the variables takes place. For most of these disturbances to be damped don, a period of one hour or so is required. When a disturbance in the feed rate was made, the transient period extended to more than one and half hours (the duration of the experiment). It was observed that there is an interaction between the drum speed and moisture needed for producing an acceptable green ball product. The moisture content of the product pellets was found to be a function of the pellet size, with the larger pellets retaining a higher moisture content.

Introduction In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Head losses in mine entries are calculated using Atkinson's Equation. [22H= KPLQ (English) H= KP 3Q (SO (1) 5.2AA] where H = pressure loss, in. of H2O (Pa); K = friction factor, lbf•min2/ft4 (kg/m3); P = perimeter, ft (m); L = airway length, ft (m); Q = airflow quantity, ft3/min (m3/sec); and A = flow cross-sectional area, ft2 (m2) In this equation, the friction factor, K, is an empirical constant that describes the aerodynamic roughness of the airway. Typically, the K-factor for a given airway is determined by measuring the factors H, P, L, Q and A in Equation (1) and calculating K. Tables of friction factors calculated in this way are found in textbooks and handbooks that deal with mine ventilation analysis. Unfortunately, very few K-factors have been measured on longwall faces, and the accuracies of those that have been measured are entirely site specific, because of the wide variety of equipment found on longwalls. The development of a technique for prediction without mine-site measurements of the friction factor for any longwall face, regardless of its configuration, will thus be very useful in the design of ventilation systems for mines in which longwall mining is practiced. Calculation of pressure losses using Atkinson's Equation (1) and empirically determined K-factors provides accurate and useful approximations in cases where the airways have relatively simple cross sections. However, a careful analysis using the principles of fluid mechanics shows that such calculations are based on two assumptions that are not strictly correct when there are obstructions in the airway. The first assumption is that the air velocity distribution in the cross section, particularly around the perimeter, is uniform. This assumption results from the fact that the tabulated K-factor values found in the literature are based on field measurements with uniform conditions. Such uniformity does not exist in longwall airflows. The second common assumption is that the K-factor, and corresponding head loss, is independent of the Reynolds Number (NR) for a given flow. In fact, this assumption is not strictly correct, and is particularly erroneous in the case of irregular protuberances into the airflow, such as those found on a longwall face. The errors arising from the assumptions may be avoided by using K-factors calculated by a newly devised method, described below, which takes into account the fundamental principles of aerodynamic drag analysis. This new technique has two advantages: first, it is flexible enough to model any longwall, regardless of equipment configuration; second, it employs terminology and equations familiar to those who perform mine ventilation analysis, using K-factors, for which ventilation engineers have an intuitive understanding, rather than drag coefficients. To provide guidance for development of a longwall drag model, data were taken on two modern longwalls operating in substantially different conditions. Pressure measurements at Mine B were made with 200-foot (61-m) sections of 1/8-in. (3-mm) diameter plastic tubing, attached to a Dwyer Magnehelic gauge. Pressure drops were measured in 200-foot increments down the face, and summed to give the drop for the entire face length. This technique was found to produce small, repeated errors because of the number of segments required to span the longwall. At Mine A this problem was avoided by using a single, continuous, plastic tube for the entire face length. The psychrometric properties of the air were measured for both Mines A and B. A calibrated, standard vane-anemometer was used to measure the airflow on both faces. Finally, numerous dimensions were measured on both faces, and face profile drawings were obtained to allow detailed evaluation of the face equipment geometry. From this information, accurate evaluations of the average wetted perimeter and average area of the longwall face airways were made. This research is the result of a geotechnical study carried out in a natural slope in an Open Pit mine in Southern Peru, highlighting earthquakes as an important cause of instability within the case study presented. This leads to analyze the stability of a slope, according to the safety factor and thus consider a future construction in its environment according to the identified requirements. There are known disasters at national and international level that involve human lives because of the lack of analysis of slope stability conditions, which based on the results will allow to control and to take adequate corrective measures. These mass movements are classified whether they are soils or rocks, considering the mechanism and type of rupture, as well as the presence of water, the speed and magnitude of the movement. The movement problems are due to factors of inherent nature and constitute a reason to perform a calculation study to analyze and estimate the safety factor of each of the evaluated cases

A number of improvements in the ventilation system at the Henderson Mine have been made during the past several years. A key to these improvements was the installation of a computerized monitoring and control system. Employees can determine the status of any of hundreds of devices in seconds through the use of this monitoring system. Mine dewatering pumps, the water treatment system, the ore haulage system, electric power usage as well as other devices are controlled and/or monitored. Ventilation parameters which are monitored include air flow volumes and carbon monoxide as well as the status of main surface fans, mine doors, and ventilation raise doors. Main underground fans are also constantly monitored and can be controlled remotely. These underground fans can be programmed to automatically start and stop to follow work schedules, optimizing air quality while reducing power cost. Mine air heating costs have been reduced by replacing an electrical resistance heating system with a direct fired natural gas heating system at the portal of the ore haulage tunnel.

Raw material requirements are becoming increasingly difficult to meet because high-grade bauxite, required for some uses, is limited. The supply of raw material for high-alumina refractories is most critical because a low-iron bauxite is needed. Although there are substantial bauxite reserves in the world, bauxite suitable for use in refractories is limited to a few districts.

Benefits of proper control of reagent usage in flotation circuits are typically improved metallurgy and savings in reagent costs. Improved metallurgy can mean more consistent product quality, i.e., final concentrate grade, better recovery of product values from the feed, or higher plant throughput at existing target recovery, and grade values. Flotation performance is sensitive to a variety of process disturbances which occur in operating plants, such as changes in flow rate, percent solids, size distribution. flotability of mineral species, etc. A way to handle these variations is to fully understand the dynamic flotation responses to disturbances and to implement a suitable control strategy to compensate for these disturbances. Depending on the objectives of the control system, various types of control strategies are available which employ different levels of refinement to achieve the desired performance. Typically, variables such as collector and frother dosages and reagent addition points can be manipulated to affect the performance of the circuit. In the case of sulflde mineral flotation, manipulation of the process electrochemical potential, in flotation and in grinding, offers another degree of process control. Because of the complex and interactive nature of flotation process variables, optimized reagent control requires consideration of all, or at least the most important, interactive variables of the flotation circuit. Model- based optimizing control provides a framework to handle the complex and dynamic nature of flotation reagent process control.

The presence of misplaced ultra-fine particles has been shown to decrease the separation efficiency of unit operations used in coal preparation. Although the classification of fine coal was considered to be adequate for the needs of the coal industry during the 1970's and 1980's, it has become apparent that further improvements in the yield/ash/moisture relationship achieved by coal preparation plants will require increased efficiency in this size separation step. This paper describes the issues which are evolving in this area, and the capability of current and developing techniques to address the problems which need to be overcome.

Flotation of low grade Ni ores with serpentinite host rock tend to yield low recoveries of Ni With high MgO contents in the concentrate. The recovery can be enhanced by optimizing the sub-processes in the pulp and in the froth. The new OF-100 flotation cell has been designed to be adaptable to different feed fineness (Coarse, Fine). The losses can according the research conducted at Outokumpu's Hitura plant be substantially decreased by OF-100's new rotor and stator design and froth zone geometry. The froth residence time is used to adapt for feed particle size changes measured by the Outokumpu PSI- 200. Models for the behaviour of different particle Sizes in the sub-processes have been developed. The modified froth zone geometry and the capability of maintaining a froth of desired thickness allows efficient washing of the obtained concentrate producing low levels of MgO.

"Construction of the largest desalinization plant in the Americas has commenced in northern Chile. It is part of a several billion dollar expansion at a copper mine whose operations nearly stopped due to the challenge of securing a reliable source of water from the Pacific Ocean in a safe and environmentally sound manner. This paper discusses the risk management, design and construction of a quadruple chamber intake and outfall shaft, high capacity pump station, three 7m diameter vertically drilled marine shafts and three subsea tunnels constructed through challenging Andean hard-rock geology. The three 2.5m diameter subsea microtunnels are being mined with vertical curves through variable quality rock 30 meters beneath the ocean and retrieved in the wet from the 7m diameter marine shafts. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The battle for securing the rights to a constant water supply is a worldwide issue and nowhere is that more evident than the Atacama Desert of Chile, the world’s driest place with areas of the desert that have not seen rainfall in recorded history. The Atacama Desert also happens to be home to some of the world’s largest ore deposits which require huge amounts of water to extract and process. What available water there is comes from three main sources: deep seated wells, glacial water from the Andes Mountains, and desalinated water. Vying for water from wells and glacial streams and lakes are numerous agricultural and domestic facilities in the valleys surrounding the Atacama Desert. Environmental regulations and legal rulings have limited the amount of “natural” source water which can be used for mining purposes. Desalination plants are a known solution for combating water scarcity, albeit a costly one. The total estimated cost of constructing this desalination plant is over $3B USD, which will include a 2500lps capacity and an approximately 118km pipeline from the coast up to the mine located in the Andes. The overall scope of the project includes design, procurement, and construction packages for the 2500lps desalination plant including the seawater reverse osmosis plant, water conveyance to the mine, power transmission, the reservoir and the marine works package which forms the basis of this paper. Outokumpu Oy has acquired considerable experience with on-stream X-ray fluorescence analyzers and with computer control of flotation processes over several years. It became evident at the outset of this work that a reliable and accurate on-stream analyzer was more than a collection of different pieces of hardware linked together. Extensive work was done to develop an integral analyzer system, beginning with process samples through the spectrometer to report typewriters, recorders and the control computer. To date, over ten Courier-300 analyzer systems based on this development have been installed world-wide, several of which provide the key information for successful computer control systems. Computer control of flotation processes has been under development at the Pyhäsalmi concentrator since 1968. Two different control strategies have been implemented. The copper flotation is controlled by means of a mathematical model and economic criteria, whereas the "evolutionary operation principle" is applied to the zinc flotation. The computer control system installed at' the Vuonos-mine has been developed according to the same guidelines. In order to consolidate this wide experience, a flotation computer control system, Proscon-100, was developed by Outokumpu Oy, and the first system was installed at Kotalahti in 1972. In addition to the technological experience, enough information has also been gathered to illustrate the economical, benefits accruing through the use of these advanced tools of automation.

Bioleaching is an environmental friendly process that has gained much interest for the production of metals from metal-bearing wastes or materials. The process decreases carbon footprint by reducing consumption of fossil fuels. Iron is a key factor in acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria’s activity, which is used extensively in the bioleaching of sulfide minerals. In the present study, the effect of different iron sources is investigated on sphalerite (ZnS) bioleaching. For this purpose, the effects of FeSO4  .7H2O, Fe2(SO4  )3 and FeS2 (pyrite) were studied on bacterial activity, and zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) dissolutions were monitored from a ZnS concentrate. Under optimum conditions, the dissolutions of Zn, Pb, Cd and As were found to be 39.8, 0.1. 0.03 and 10 percent, respectively, in 25 days.
