Three conditions are required for a risk to be realized: (1) a source of risk (i.e., hazard) must exists (2) some process must take place which will lead to the exposure of people, animals, and/or the environment to the hazard: and (3) as a result of the expense, undesirable effects are produced on the people, animals, and/or the environment. A comprehensive risk assessment addresses all three of the conditions through the following four steps: (1) risk source (hazard) characterization, (2) exposure assessment, (3) dose-response assessment, and (4) risk estimation. Although the terminology may differ, the overall approach of financial, public health, and environmental risk assessments is the same (National Science Foundation, 1985).

Placer Dome Canada owns and operates the Campbell mine and mill at Balmertown, in the north western corner of Ontario. The mine operates at 1.3 kt/d (1,500 stpd). It produced more than 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold during the last three years. Changes to the gravity concentration circuit have resulted in a 10% to 15% increase in gravity recovery. The mill head grade at the Campbell Mill is relatively high, averaging 18.5 g/t (0.54 oz/st) over the total reserve tonnage. During the past several years, the head grade was averaging close to 20 g/t (0.6 oz/st). Before 1994, gravity concentration was achieved by using a combination of conventional mineral jigs and tables. Jig concentrates were upgraded on shaking tables to produce a concentrate, which was refined to bullion. In May 1994, management decided to buy two Knelson CD 760-mm (30-in.) concentrators. The objective was to replace the existing jigs and increase gravity gold recovery by up to 15%. Gravity recovery with jigs averaged between 30% to 35%. Gravity recovery was anticipated to increase to about 50% with the Knelsons.

The crust of the earth, together with its seas and its atmosphere, is the source of all of mankind's primary wealth. Indeed, most people think of precious metals and stones when they think of wealth mined from the earth, but the value of the material and energy goods derived from the earth far exceed the value of the precious metals and gem stones. Thus, it is obvious that all minerals which we mine from the ground represent new wealth--the copper, clay, or petroleum we mine just as much as the gold or silver. More and more, wealth is defined in terms of utility-not in terms of an arbitrarily established monetary value. The recent action of the OPEC nations in controlling the flow of petroleum has clearly demonstrated this to the petroleum-importing nations! There is developing in the United States, as well as in many other nations of the world, a concern for the future availability of many mineral-derived raw materials and of mineral fuels. Ore grades are diminishing, concern for the environment has placed restraints on commercial development of some mineral deposits and the processing facilities necessary to exploit them, and countries upon which we have relied for major mineral materials have become increasingly nationalistic, causing uncertainties in future supply and causing an increasingly alarming deficit in our nation's balance in trade.

"As mine operators continuously look for ways to improve functionality and increase capacity of their facilities, existing process equipment is often pushed to and past its designed limitations. As a result, equipment manufacturers are asked for economical solutions to meet redefined processing needs. Newmont USA (Newmont) in Nevada was faced with such a need in their Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) train. In a collaborative effort between Newmont and Derrick Corporation, tests were conceived to assess the viability of drop in replacement screen using a three dimensional screen panel. The urethane pyramid screen panel was designed to increase flux while maintaining the existing equipment footprint. The test is the end result of an ongoing research and development project that Derrick undertook in an effort to refine and upgrade their urethane screening media. The application of this new screening media is presented for this CIL application along with future plans to implement the technology in trash, safety, carbon dewatering, carbon sizing, and other scalping applications.INTRODUCTION In Spring of 2014, Process Machinery Associates (PMA), Derrick Corporation’s (Derrick) local area representative, met with Newmont USA (Newmont) to discuss the operation of the in tank screens in the carbon in leach (CIL) train at Twin Creeks, near Golconda, Nevada. The process was originally designed for 13,000 +tons per day (tpd) but has been steadily rising since the plant was commissioned and now Newmont requires 16,000 tpd to be processed. The original screens were running at their maximum capacity and Newmont required additional screening capacity to continue the upward trend in production. Physical separation by use of screening is one of mineral processing oldest methods. Screening media can be prone to blinding and pegging and the necessary support structures required for finer apertures result in smaller open areas. Therefore, more screening area generally requires larger panels and therefore larger machines, screening media that doesn’t blind, or a combination of both. In an effort to avoid larger machines, Derrick Corporation had been working on a revolutionary three dimensional panel which would add non blinding screen area in the same footprint of an existing machine. Alpha testing of the new screen panels began at Newmont Mill 2/5 (Carlin, Nevada) in July of 2013 and was still occurring when PMA approached Twin Creeks about beta testing a refined machine and pyramid panel. After presenting the initial results, Twin Creeks determined that an upgraded machine and pyramid panels would be a possible solution to meet production needs. The testing of a machine eliminated the risk of capital costs to Newmont and provided Derrick the opportunity to obtain additional data."

Plants obtain nutrients from both air and soil. They absorb carbon dioxide mainly from the air, although some carbon dioxide may be dissolved in soil water which is absorbed by plant roots. Carbon dioxide, a gaseous form of carbon and oxygen, supplies the carbon which usually makes up 50% or more of plant structure. Growing plants use water more than any other biological substance. Plant nutrients dissolve in soil water and enter the plant via root absorption. Water is then given off into the air as the plant breathes or transpires. Water also supplies hydrogen and oxygen to plants. Plant roots absorb nutrient cations or anions by contact exchange with soil clay particles. Inorganic or mineral nutrients essential to plants are supplied through the soil. Inorganic or mineral composition of plants usually is less than 5% of their weight. In most crop-growing areas, much of this nutrition is inadequately supplied from soil reserves and must be provided by fertilizers. The role of the fertilizer industry is to provide economical, efficient, good quality fertilizers to improve or maintain soil productivity for optimum crop production. The essential plant nutrients other than carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen which often must be added to soils or plants are categorized as primary nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium), secondary nutrients (calcium, magnesium, and sulfur), and micronutrients (boron, chlorine, copper iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc). These classifications are based on quantity of nutrients utilized by plants and do not imply their function or degree of necessity. One point of major significance to the fertilizer industry is that not all fertilizer minerals contain the plant nutrients in a chemical form available to the plant. A product which may be considered a fertilizer mineral may require substantial processing or treatment before it becomes useful as a nutrient source or fertilizer.

Atlantic Richfield Company began operating a commercial uranium solution mining project in April, 1975 in Live Oak County, 10 miles southwest of the town of George West (Figure 1). The operation is designed to produce 250,000 pounds of U303 per year and is jointly owned by Atlantic Richfield Company, Dalco and U. S. Steel. The proprietary process employed in this operation consists of injecting an alkaline leaching solution into the ore-bearing formation through a pattern of injection wells. The uranium-bearing solution is then removed through producing wells using submersible pumps in central production wells. The produced solution is pumped through a pipeline to the plant area where the uranium is extracted. The barren solution is refurbished and returned to the pattern area for reinjection. The injection field and plant site are located in the drainage of Spring Creek, a small intermittent stream tributary to the Nueces River. Land use in the area is primarily agricultural -- cattle ranching and farming -- but several producing gas fields are present in the areas as well.

With the current emphasis on ecology, safety, and conservation of natural resources, some consideration should be given to methods of mining that reduce surface damage, make the mining of coal less hazardous, and allow exploitation of a larger percentage of the coal in situ. One method that can be helpful toward attaining these objectives is the use of packing or stowing. Stowing involves the replacement of the ore that has been removed by waste material obtained from within the mine or elsewhere. Evidently, it would be most beneficial if this waste for packing were available from the mine being worked, but generally this is not possible. If complete stowing is adopted, it is necessary to bring in packing material from other sources. Stowing tends to reduce surface subsidence, but not eliminate it. It enhances roof support and curtails accumulation of methane in the gob, making the mining operations safer. It may also allow one to obtain a larger amount of coal. Currently, in the United States, a substantial amount of coal is left in place as pillars, in the hope that it will support the overburden indefinitely. Some of these could be extracted with stowing. The mining of thick, steep, or contiguous seams would also be facilitated.

This paper presents the results of a parametric study of the influence of natural features (stress field, rock strength, and strength and orientation of fractures) as well as the influence of induced features (undercut span, boundary slot, and other boundary-weakening measures) on the cavability of an undercut block of ore in mining by the block-caving method. The two-dimensional finite element analysis technique was used for this study. A coarse "mesh," along with linear homogeneous assumptions for rock properties, was used to model the problem of initiation of caving in a block of ore. Interpretation of the test results suggests that weakening the "abutments" of the block as well as certain orientations of natural fractures exercise significant influence on cavability. These findings hold promise for immediate application to known situations in block-caving mines.

A recent development using XRD techniques, a unique fixed detector, specifically permitting full mineralogical information simultaneously for the first time, specially designed sample preparation and presentation system and Rietveld codes provide a continuous real- time analysis on the true contained mineral polymorphic composition of powder streams such as ore materials, cement, ground clinker or any other mineral stream conducive to XRD analysis. There are several COSMA systems currently operating in the US, Canada, Italy and Australia, proving service and reliability of this concept. The mineralogical information generated continuously in real time is used for automated efficiency, product quality and reduces costs. Quantitative Phase Analysis information is transmitted to the plant DCS via Modbus over RS422 or ethernet. Some limited information is stored in the on-board computers for optional future use at the operator?s option.

The 1981 Fall field trip of the Denver Region Exploration Geologists' Society focuses on Creede. That is appropriate - because significant mining history has been made and is being made in this off-the-beaten track, high-country mining district. Creede is one of the few Colorado bonanza towns which was big in the 19th Century, had its ups and downs, and produced almost continuously since its discovery. Creede is important to geologists for its: precious and base metal production, current exploration activity, and research into near-surface hydrothermal systems. United States Geological Survey research and field geologists zeroed in on Creede some 25 years ago and their steady, consistent work is now being spotlighted and appreciated.

Lead and zinc have been mined for over 90 years in parts of the Lower Benue rift in southeastern Nigeria. However, there has been little interest in the sustainability of the environment and the inhabitants of the host communities. Adverse effects include soil and food crop contamination, lack of education, poor healthcare, unemployment, and no access to potable water. This work suggests practicable mitigation strategies to ameliorate these negative effects and promote environmental sustainability.

The Lynne deposit is a volcanic-to volcaniclastic-hosted, Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag orebody located in the early Proterozoic magmatic terrain of northern Wisconsin. As of February 1991, core drilling has partially delineated a multi-million ton, near-surface, disseminated to massive sulfide deposit. The deposit is hosted by a gently dipping sequence of fragmental rhyolites, felsic tuffs, less abundant dacite to andesite flows, and fine-grained volcanic sediments. The deposit is broadly conformable With the host rock stratigraphy, but the ore zones thicken and coalesce in the central part of the deposit.

The most perplexing problem that has confronted mining engineers since the dawn of mining has been strata control. For the purposes of this paper, strata control will be defined as control of ground in the immediate area surrounding the, mine opening. To prevent movement of the surrounding strata into underground mine openings, miners have traditionally relied upon some type of artificial supports placed within the openings and located in a manner determined by trial and error from previous experience. Without the means to measure changes of stress in the supports and within the mine structure itself, an evaluation of the efficiency of the supports and mining system was impossible. Strata control thus remained an art with very little application of science. During recent years a revolution has occurred in mining. The modern mining engineer is contented no longer-with trial and error methods but is utilizing all the technological information at his command to obtain a solution to this age old problem. However, serious problems have arisen due to the lack of certain basic knowledge in three important areas: 1, The original stress distribution within the earth strata prior to mining. 2, Redistribution and concentration of the original stresses with mining activity. 3. The properties of rock that are significant in failure and its prevention.

Introduction Cross borehole seismic tomography (CBST) is a geophysical technique that allows definition of the distribution of some physical rock property between two boreholes. The method is similar to the computer-assisted tomography (CAT) scans used by the medical industry. This paper describes the method, its applications and the developing trends in its use that interest the mining industry. The idea of using tomography in connection with geophysical methods for measuring rock properties between boreholes has been around for three or four decades. Until the advent of high-speed, large-capacity computers, the necessary calculations were too formidable for production use. Another factor in the development of the technique has been the refinement of a mathematical base to meet the needs of the medical industry. The geophysical applications have benefited from this refinement. An extensive discussion of the basic theory is given in Kak and Slaney (1988). CBST, although widely researched and written about, is still not extensively put to use in mining and engineering projects. Most real world examples in the literature have come from research carried out by government laboratories or by large companies. An exception is the regular use by Prospection Geophysique Francaise (Cottin et al., 1986) in damsite investigations. The Japanese appear to be doing extensive research and testing of CBST's uses in civil engineering projects (Saito et al., 1988). Canada is researching the use of the method in connection with nuclear waste site investigations (Wong et al., 1987). Finland has tested the method in connection with a foundation investigation for a nuclear power plant (Cosma et al., 1984). In the US, the US Bureau of Mines has taken an interest in using CBST as a means to enhance in situ mining operations (Tweeton, 1988). Major oil companies are examining the method as a tool in oil field development (Justice et al., 1989). Description of the method CBST involves placing a series of receivers down one borehole and recording transmissions from an energy source placed successively at a series of positions in another hole. The objective is to generate a dense network of seismic raypaths between the holes. The denser the network of raypaths, the better the features between the boreholes are resolved. Either seismic travel times or sine wave amplitudes are measured by the receivers. Analysis of travel times between boreholes develops a picture of rock velocities between the holes. Analysis of seismic wave amplitudes develops a picture of the distribution of energy transmission characteristics between the holes. These seismic properties can be used to define occurrences of fracture zones, lenticular sequences or other important geologic data not apparent from examination of the borehole logs. When longitudinal (compressional) and transverse (shear) waves are analyzed, the physical properties, such as elastic moduli, can also be mapped. When wave amplitudes are measured, rather extensive corrections to the data are necessary. There is some disagreement among researchers as to the feasibility of making some of the corrections. For this reason, this paper will concentrate primarily on travel time analysis. Wave amplitude analysis will be mentioned occasionally only in passing. This does not mean that amplitude analysis does not provide important data on rock parameters, only that for the present there are limitations on its uses. Vertical seismic profiling (VSP), extensively used in recent years in oil exploration, is similar to CBST. Instead of using two boreholes, however, the VSP method uses an array of seismic sources or detectors down one hole and an array of detectors or sources along the surface radiating outward from the hole. While adequate for determining vertical velocity distributions, the VSP method is not, by itself, suitable for most engineering or mining projects. More and more mining underground is being conducted using the longwall method. Likewise, many new surface mines use area or mountaintop removal methods. These methods can have a significant impact on surface and groundwater resources. The overall study of the effects on surface and groundwater from mining is referred to as the probable hydrologic consequences (PHC) determination of mining and reclamation. Collection and interpretation of information concerning groundwater and surface water quality and quantity, as well as detailed geologic analysis, is required to adequately define the impacts of mining. This paper discusses the present day requirements and methodology of preparing a PHC for a large mining operation in the eastern coalfields.

Shallow underground voids resulting from early coal mining and other resource recovery activities over the past several decades are now being recognized as a significant cause of ground subsidence problems. Uncertain knowledge of abandoned coal mines also imposes potential hazards in current mining operations since water inundation or the release of methane gas is a serious hazard when mine excavation operations break into an abandoned mine. Requirements for detecting and mapping subversive man-made tunnels in previous work has led to the development of a surface- operated automatic earth resistivity survey system and associated computer data processing system for military applications. Field demonstration tests of this system have resulted in successful detection of tunnels at depth-to- diameter ratios greater than ten to one. Under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Mines, a similar high-resolution earth resistivity system was designed and constructed for use as a potential means of detecting coal mine workings. The hardware and software aspects of the new system are described together with applications of the method to the survey and mapping of abandoned coal mine workings. Field tests are presented showing the detection of both air-filled and water-filled mine workings.
