The pockets of high silica blue dust across the entire high grade hematite deposits in the Bailadila sector bothers the excavation activity due their iron content, which is higher than the threshold value specified by the Indian Bureau of Mines and the agony of stacking them separately due to their fragile & powdery nature. The physical nature of blue dust and its negligible alumina content makes these a potential source of hematite, which is a blessing in disguise. As most of the particles are in the form of an independent grain making it appropriately suitable feed for dry magnetic separation and thus the dry beneficiation has turned a bane into boon by enabling to produce concentrate either suitable for using as DSO or amenable for blending. The emphasis on carrying out dry beneficiation studies in the present context serves the purpose of mineral conservation, mitigates the issues of excavation and stacking as well as conservation of water resource. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot scale dry beneficiation studies carried out on blue dust of 48 – 60%Fe and Silica up to 30% at 25 Kg/hour to 400 Kg/hour, resulting in production of concentrate assaying 60 – 65%Fe. INTRODUCTION High silica blue dust (HSBD) is associated with Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ) and is available in abundance in various pockets across the Iron ore body in the Bailadila region of Chhattisgarh state. High Silica Blue dust occurs in the form of free granular particles and also as friable lumps. The chemical quality of this falls under sub-grade category (45 – 55%Fe) and as per the guidelines of Indian Bureau of Mines, these are to be stacked and conserved as future resources of Iron if it can’t be utilized in the present circumstances. Due to its friable nature, stacking of HSBD is a challenge and it is also compounding the problem by polluting the air under high velocity wind conditions. Because of its physical nature and occurrence in pockets pose challenge to systematic mining. The existing processing set up of the operating mines is designed to treat either Direct Shipping ore (DSO) or Run-of-Mine (ROM) have grade >60% Fe. The present practice of beneficiating iron ore fines (<1 mm) comprise combination of two or more processes such as desliming, hydraulic classification, magnetic separation and flotation apart from requirement of grinding depending on liberation characteristics. The HSBD which is predominantly occur as free granular particles, is significantly low in its alumina content. This gives us an opportunity to utilize them by exploring a suitable beneficiation process so that the concentrate produced can be used as a sweetener for alumina rich iron ore/concentrate. Thus, in the present study, an attempt has been made to adopt dry high intensity magnetic separation technique to explore the amenability of the high silica blue dust for beneficiation.

Cobbing, as used in this; paper, refers to coarse dry magnetics separation. It is applicable when, by its practice, plant cost can be reduced or the value of its products increased by the removal of a barren or lean reject or a high grade final product. This paper attempts to describe cobbing as it is now being practiced, and also the problems that are of concern to the operator and design engineer. In preparation, 16 plants were contacted, all of which were very cooperative with their time and data.

Mine information is often multi-disciplinary, dynamic and spatially complex. Different departments use the same data in many different ways, information changes over time and mines change their shape continuously. Earthworks InTouch is a radical VR-based system developed by AIMS Solutions and marketed by Earthworks, which provides a rapid and intuitive interface to a wide range of mine information. VR is used to provide an interactive and visually accurate, dynamic 3D model of the mine workings and equipment operating in the mine. Individual objects in the mine can be linked to external applications that provide up-to-date and context sensitive information. Equipment movement can be simulated or tied in to real-time survey from GPS systems for example or excavator productivity data can be extracted from a production database. The paper will highlight the major advantages of using such a VR interface to access valuable and time sensitive information.

"Shin-Yokohama station (tentative name), one of the station of the Sotetsu - Tokyu through line (ST line), is under construction by the OPEN – CUT method. The Underground Soil–Cement Steel Diaphragm Wall is implemented as an earth retaining wall. This earth retaining wall is utilized as a main body of a subway station. It is the first time to utilize this earth retaining wall as the main body. There are two difficult issues for this project. One is that this station is planned under busy major road and there are many underground utilities, for example, an electrical transmission line. Because of that, construction area is limited. The other is that this station is located in a thick soft clay layer. This layer has a high risk of consolidation settlement because of draining during main excavation. Thus, high water tightness is required for this earth retaining wall. This paper reports design and construction methods for the Underground Soil–Cement Steel Diaphragm wall introduced as a part of the body of the subway station.1. OUTLINE OF SHIN-YOKOHAMA STATION 1-1. Location and structure of Shin-Yokohama Station Shin-Yokohama station is an intermediate station on the ST line connected to the Tokaido-Shinkansen bullet train, the JR-Yokohama line and the Yokohama Municipal Subway. Access to Tokyo and the Tokaido- Shinkansen from the eastern part of Yokohama city will be improved by this project. In addition, the number of estimated passengers of this station is one hundred thousand people/day because a soccer stadium (Nissan Stadium: 72,000 people), a huge indoor arena and a hotel are located in this area. This station consists of 4 stories and 3 spans (Max width; 29m, Depth; 33m, Length; 325.5m). Completion image is shown in Figure 2. Generally, stations have 1 platform and 2 trucks. But this station has 2 platforms and 3 tracks because some of ST line trains return at this station and a train deadheads from Hazawa station to this station in an emergency. This station is planned as 4 stories underground station, and the platform is on the lowest story. The reason why this station is in such a deeper position is to prevent the alignment from interfering with the Yokohama Municipal Subway station and foundation piles for bridge piers existing along the alignment. Even under the constraint conditions, earth covering should be shallow as much as possible. As a result, the tunnel edge is very close to the foundation pile, and the gap is only about 2m (Figure 3). In addition, passengers will be able to change trains easily from the ST line to the Yokohama Municipal Subway or vice versa at this station."

Thickening remains relatively misunderstood since it is typically near the end of the process and not directly involved in metal recovery. When operating well, thickeners are ignored and left to run independently, the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ phenomena. However, when operating poorly, there is a lack of basic understanding and remedial actions to solve issues are reactionary rather than proactively addressing shortcomings. This series of papers breaks down in sequential order the stepped phases required to gain an appreciation and thorough understanding of the science behind thickeners, and key thickener components, and basic troubleshooting skills. This second paper starts with identifying the different approaches to thickener test work including static and dynamic settling tests followed by high-rate versus paste thickening. Complimentary to test work, the mechanisms surrounding coagulation and flocculation are presented and explained. The basic mechanisms for coagulation and flocculation are discussed to support the different test work approaches and provide the reader with the basic background.

Reclamation of surface mined lands has two basic objectives: (1) the elimination or abatement of undesirable environmental conditions, and (2) the restoration of mined land to its former or more productive uses. This paper addresses some of the planning concepts and site factors that influence the selection of suitable land uses for surface mined lands. Three planning concepts included in the discussion are: (1) mine land planning, (2) comprehensive land use planning, and (3) environmental site planning. The site factors that will influence the selection of an appropriate land use have been grouped into three categories: (1) legal, (2) geographic, and (3) natural. The natural factors are further subdivided into three groupings: geomorphology, soils, and climate.

According to the 1966 Bureau of Mines Mineral Year Book only three states reported production of lignite in that year. These state: were North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota; although it is known that there is production of lignite in Texas, California and, perhaps, Arkansas. In the year 1966 North Dakota produced 3,543,000 tons of lignite, Montana produced 328,000 tons of lignite, and South Dakota produced 10,000 tons of lignite. In view of the fact that North Dakota produces approximately 95 per cent of all the lignite reported in the United States, in discussing lignite mining, my remarks will be confined to lignite mining as conducted in North Dakota and will be confined to the production of lignite by stripping methods, as this is the predominate method used today. The first lignite mining in Worth Dakota, undoubtedly, was done by people settling in the western part of the state where wood was scarce and where lignite is exposed in the banks of creeks and ravines. The first production records were kept in 1884 and indicate that 35,000 tons of lignite were mined that year. The growth of the lignite industry has been very slow during the intervening period, but in 1966 production started to increase, and it is now indicated that production in the next few years may approach 6,000,000 tons per year. Ninety-seven per cent of the lignite produced in the lignite area of the Midwest is utilized in the generation of electric power, and it is anticipated that this use will predominate during the next two decades.

Discussion by F.W. DeVries Comments on natural cyanide attenuation. The paper by Botz and Mudder in the November 2000 issue of Minerals and Metallurgical Processing had one disappointing aspect. Table 1 (p. 229) failed to include a significant species - neutral copper cyanide (CuCN). This compound has been most trouble-some in many plant-scale cyanide cleanup processes, includ- ing acidification-volatilization- reneutralization (AVR), hy- drogen peroxide cleanup and air/SO2 cleanup. It has also plagued many pilot efforts to use ion-exchange (IX) resin technology. This author elucidated the concept that, under some conditions, copper cyanide failed to precipitate out of treated effluents and appeared to exist as a filterable colloid that reported as copper and cyanide, with the latter measured as WAD (weak-acid-dissociable) cyanide in that analytical method. The concentrations measured were very near the levels of 0.2 ppm, often the regulatory limit for WAD cyanide. The copper concentration, using the 1 : 1 ratio for this com- pound, would then be more than 0.4 ppm, which could also be unacceptable. We discovered that it was unsafe to assume that the Cu(CN),- would surrender both cyanide ions simultaneously and allow cupric copper to be removed subsequently as, say, cupric ferrocyanide (Hatchett&apos;s Brown). This compound could be ignored as safely as the "iron blues," as essentially an inert solid, stable in geologic time if not exposed to sunlight. Under poorly controlled oxidation of the cyanocuprite ions (copper with four, three or two cyanides complexed to the copper), CuCN could well be formed and could not be assumed to precipitate out as a solid. The authors of the paper, by failing to include the CuCN species in their model, may have left users of the model prone to ignore the possible occurrence of the colloidal(?) form in the discharge, thus finding an effluent that failed to meet regulatory limits. (See addendum below.) This somewhat ephemeral material may well have been responsible for some large-scale failures of cyanide destruction technology to succeed at sites in North America and elsewhere. Two specific references alluding to this occurrence may be found: Griffiths et al., 1987, "The detoxification of gold-mill tailings with hydrogen peroxide," Journal of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, September, p. 282. DeVries, 1989, "Improved understanding in detoxification of cyanide leach liquors using peroxide" Rand01 Gold Conference, Sacramento CA, p. 15 1. It is advisable for workers in this area of cyanide removal or recycle to avoid assuming that CuCN will, with certainty, precipitate out of solution, or that the dicyanocuprite ion will part simultaneously with both cyanide ions and allow cupric copper to be dealt with by other reactions. One further piece of work may be incomplete. That is, a definitive study of the long-term behavior of CuCN that does precipitate when exposed to other compounds present in neutralized tailings. Addendum. The extremely complex reaction of cupric ion on cyanide- which, of course, results in oxidation of cyanide to cyanate, probably through the intermediate stage of forming cyanogen [(CN)2] from oxidation of HCN with its hydrolysis to cyanate and cyanide ion - involves two cyanide moieties and the reduction of the cupric ion back again to the cuprous state. This, then, can form the CuCN potential "solid" that was already the undesirable species. In cyanide cleanup, with either air/SO2 or hydrogen peroxide, copper is generally employed as the catalyst, so it is unclear what happens when the CU(CN)2-1 is ultimately exhausted. In 1994 Western Mine Engineering, Inc., (WME), which is now InfoMine USA, Inc., set out to build a suite of stand-alone software programs that would provide their clients the means to estimate the costs of developing and operating mineral exploitation projects. After the first program (Sherpa for Surface Mines) was completed and launched, the developer (me) left WME to form Aventurine Engineering, Inc., in order to complete the series of applications. In the years since, four programs have either been developed or upgraded and enhanced. Applications were produced that estimate the costs of underground mining, placer mining, and project site reclamation. In addition, an application specifically designed to evaluate the economics of these projects, which was based upon a program previously developed for WME by Bill Willoughby of Willoughby & Associates, was redesigned and the code updated to a MicroSoft compatible platform. All these programs follow an engineering-based approach to cost estimating. Instead of relying on rules-of-thumb and statistical averages, they calculate all of the engineering and operational parameters needed to estimate costs. The premise is that the uncertainty associated with cost estimates should lie with the data available for the resource, not the approaches used to design and estimate the associated design parameters. In other words, it is acceptable that items such as the resource grades, deposit dimensions, ore and wall rock characteristics, and mill recovery rates carry with them some uncertainty, but parameters such as loader bucket capacities, truck speeds, pump horsepowers, hoist velocities, and grinding mill diameters can be calculated (although uncertain data might be used in those calculations). No additional uncertainties should be introduced because the cost-estimating procedure relied upon statistical manipulation or anecdotal inaccuracies. To that end, the programs rely upon calculation-based approaches to selecting and sizing machinery, assigning the required workforce, and determining the extent of the consumables needed to recover mineralized material at a rate defined by the client. And while calculation-based software is not unusual, more modern approaches work toward the development, accumulation, and manipulation of data. INITIAL CONDITIONS AND PROJECT GOALS In 2016 we had five separate programs completely disconnected from one another. Each was written in VisualBasic, a language that was falling from favor. In essence, the status in 2016 was a series of stand-alone programs (Figure 1) in which results from one needed to be manually entered as input into another.

"INTRODUCTION Contemporary city is made of layers. Physical structures layers (built fabric, residential, commercial industrial etc. ), infrastructural layers (below and above ground), “green” layers (parks and open spaces), and also informational layers, i.e. connections, links, between sectors of the city and other territories. The “city of layers” concept represents the exercise of “rebuilding the city” per each layer, highlighting those physical built structures that are functional to define a relation. For example, if consider the “connection” relation, the city is re-designed by considering only transportation built structures. The layer obtained in such fashion is hence the “transportation” layer, including below grade infrastructures (subways) and above grade lines (rail, bus, tramways etc.), as below shown in Figure 1.In this sense, the contemporary city is represented by separate constructs assembled together according to a specific functionality (e.g. “connection”). As a consequence, the relation between what is built underground, and the related above-ground development, can be perceived in his most evident appearance. What could happen within the contemporary city if the planning process would begin from below to above and not vice-versa?INTERACTION The question risen in the introduction is strategic when approaching the difficult task of designing (or re-designing) a multi-level organism like the contemporary city. Nowadays, the theme of integration between underground and at-grade master planning has become the subject of many urban renovation projects, where the design process has begun within the transportation layer, underground, and further developed by interacting with at-grade structures already existing or in phase of design.A series of case studies where below/above interaction plays a key role in the project will be further analyzed. Moreover, it is relevant to understand the mechanics of an urban transformation process that originates within the transportation layer and ends up with the design of entire sectors of the city. The Transit Oriented Development approach is a useful tool to clearly understand such transformation process. TOD has become, in particular in the last decade, one of the most effective tools for urban design, in order to solve simultaneously the many different instances related to transit planning, urban design and real estate market."

"As the speed of business has continued to increase over the last decade, the focus on real-time control of the performance of both stationary and mobile assets has become an increasing priority. Traditionally the maintenance team has been focused on the management of the availability of assets while the operations team has been focused on the throughput of those same assets. Typically operations and maintenance teams worked almost independently in spite of the fact that they were both working with the same assets. Part of the problem has been their traditional performance measures which have often been diametrically opposed. Recent advancements in the area of real-time performance measures and decision support have helped to drive higher levels of collaboration between operations and maintenance leading to real-time asset performance control and higher levels of business performance. This paper will explore the forces driving the need for changes, present an effective approach to the definition of the most appropriate business performance measures, and examine the effectiveness of contextualized real-time decision support resulting in asset performance control. TRADITIONAL APPROACHES TO ASSET PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT In most industrial operations the phrase asset performance management is synonymous with maintenance of the industrial assets. This is the way industry has viewed asset management and asset performance management for decades. This is a very limited perspective that is serving to constrain the profitability of industrial operations. As industrial organizations began to form following the Industrial Revolution, the complexity of the operations forced an organizational design based on specialization. No single person could understand all of the aspects of an industrialized operation. This was particularly true at the plant floor level where the operation and maintenance of the industrial equipment required very different skillsets and training. To accommodate the vast differences most industrial organizations set up operations teams to run the equipment and maintenance teams to keep the equipment available to the operation. Both teams were dealing with the same industrial equipment but from very different perspectives and with very different performance measures. Typically the operations team was measured on maximizing the output of the equipment – or throughput. On the other hand the maintenance team was measured on the uptime – or availability of the equipment."

This paper documents an effort to explain cutterhead torque behavior observed during slurry pressure balance TBM tunneling through soft ground on the Los Angeles Clearwater project. AI machine learning and mechanics model-based learning was used to characterize cutterhead torque behavior including the TBM operating and ground parameters that influence cutterhead torque. Also, key parameters were from the slurry circuit data, including fines content, in-situ density, pore water fraction and solids content were included. The paper details what was learned using these new data-driven approaches as well as limitations with AI machine learning.

Effects of moisture absorption on the behavior of the Dykersburg shale overlying Harrisburg coal seam in Southern Illinois are presented in this paper. Cylindrical samples of the shale 2.5 cm in diameter and 5.0 cm long were studied for weight gain and swelling strains at 90, 95, and 100 percent relative humidity and under immersed water conditions. After attaining equilibrium conditions, the samples were studied for changes in the strength and deformation behavior. The depth of moisture penetration was measured using the Vickers microhardness measurements. Using the basic mass transfer concepts, effective diffusion coefficients were computed for the shale.

The Brunswick No. 12 Deposit is a large polymetallic massive sulphide deposit, occurring in Ordovician age rocks of the Tetagouche Group. Silver is contained within the sulphide zones and economically it is the second most important commodity produced. Brunswick is one of the largest silver producers in Canada. The distribution of silver within the mine is presented, with examples from various levels. The concentration of silver can be shown to be related to both stratigraphy and structure. The mineralogy of silver in mill products is also presented.

Introduction It has long been known that there are extensive deposits of phosphate-bearing deposits in the Coastal Plain of Georgia in many locations that are similar to those being mined commercially in central Florida. A major drilling program was conducted in 1966-67 by the Georgia Geological Survey (GGS). The economic potential of some of the material uncovered was evaluated at that time by a team at Georgia Institute of Technology led by Dr. J.E. Husted. There were some promising results. Since then, there has been little commercial interest in pursuing this matter, though the potential for development remains. In the long term, Georgia&apos;s phosphorite deposits could be a major source of income to the state if they were commercially processed. Phosphorite deposits contain significant levels of uranium and thorium. Uranium concentrations in Florida phosphate aggregates have been found to be 120 to 140 ppm. The presence of high concentrations of uranium means that there is a small but finite concentration of radium, which subsequently leads to radon gas emanation. It is the radon emanation and its progeny that may pose the largest health problem in many types of mining. Surface mining operations can possibly elevate the radon and radon daughter concentration in the vicinity. There is always some public concern whether any increase in the radon concentration in the atmosphere by mining (surface mining in the phosphorite case) could elevate the risk of cancer in the nearby population. At the present time, a great deal of attention has been devoted to the possible health effects of radon and its decay products in the inhaled air in mines and inside buildings built on mill tailings or uranium-bearing rock (Gesell and Lowder, 1980). Several evaluations have been published on the potential health effects of the Florida phosphate operations (Guimond and Windham, 1975; Roessler et al., 1980; Travis et al., 1979) and for buildings incorporating phosphate slag aggregates (Kahn, Eichholz, and Clarke, 1983; Roessler, Roessler, and Bolch, 1983). They all indicate that such potential effects are small, but tangible, compared with other radiation effects, for instance in the nuclear industry (Cohen, 1981). In view of the current concern, especially by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with the radiological consequences of large-scale mining of uranium-bearing phosphate rock (Guimond and Windham, 1975), it was decided to assess the potential radiological consequences if the Georgia deposits were developed. This paper presents an attempt to estimate the magnitude of any radon-based health effects that might arise from future mining operations in selected areas of the Georgia coastal region. To do this, a calculational model was developed that took into account the mining operations themselves, the atmospheric dispersion of the radon released, and the radon daughter concentrations in nearby towns. The model was applied to both extremes. The first application was a hypothetical mining operation in Echols County. Echols County is very sparsely populated and, unless living very close to the site, a person would probably experience little radiation exposure, if any. The model tries to prove this point. The second application was at a site near Savannah, Georgia. Both sites contain economically feasible phosphorite deposits and were not entirely hypothetical in that sense. Site selection In the course of the South Georgia Minerals Program (Furcron, 1967), an extensive series of drill core samples had been collected from various mineral occurrences in the coastal plain. It was found that the cores from the previous drilling program (Furcron, 1967), though carefully preserved, were not readily accessible. But the GGS reports did contain gamma logs of all the holes surveyed. With the cooperation of Dr. Neal Shapiro of the Survey, some core samples were selected and assayed, and used to calibrate the gamma log data. Samples from locations known to have detectable radioactivity were screened and counted. Their measured uranium content was used to calibrate the gamma log profiles for those same holes as obtained by the GGS. On this basis, two of the higher-level sites were selected and the calibration was used to obtain integrated uranium concentrations over the length of the borehole. It is customary to describe radon and radon-daughter concentrations in "working levels" (WL), where one WL represents a concentration of radon daughters capable of releasing 130 000 MeV of alpha particles, equivalent to 100 pCi of radon in equilibrium with its daughters per liter of air. A representative concentration is 0.15 WL, below which radon levels are widely considered to be negligible. For the mine sites selected, the surface area and rock volume were determined to estimate their radon content. Working-level values were then estimated for the assumed radon release from the crushed ore and the exposed surfaces of the mine pit. According to Kisielewski (1980), 93.4% of all radon released from open-pit operations is released from the ore zone; thus, the calculations assumed that those surface areas were the main sources.

Particulate matter is one of the leading pollutants in the mines and in the communities in the areas near or surrounding the mines. The availability of large Clinical and environmental data sets obtained from the mines has brought about the need to use better approaches to analyze the collected data. Prediction and control of particulate matter concentration in the mining environment is essential in minimizing air pollution and protecting the respiratory health of mine workers. The main objective of this research work is to analyze datasets obtained from a mining area using machine learning techniques which will then be followed by the real-time estimation of dust particulate in the mines. Datasets collected over 8 years in an hourly sampling rate from an open cast mine is cleaned and analyzed for trends and patterns. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Support Vector Machines and decision trees techniques are applied to analyze and predict the particulate concentrate. The estimation of particulate concentration using Artificial Intelligence will significantly contribute toward the development of quantitative tools to be used in correlating of cause and effect of dust concentration in mines. The results obtained in this work will form a sub-unit of a respiratory health monitoring system for mine workers. The system is essential in the collection, analysis, and tracking of mine workers’ respiratory health, thus it forms part of an early intervention system for mine workers. From the existing theory, we expect the Artificial Neural Network will perform much better than previously used classical models.

"Qatar’s capital Doha is undergoing major infrastructure improvements including a multiphase stormwater management program. Although located in an arid climate, Doha experiences flooding during rainfall events. Dewatering operations and rising groundwater levels add to the management needs. To address those needs, construction of the Musaimeer collection tunnel along Doha’s southern rim is being followed by a marine outfall tunnel connecting a pump station to a dispersion field 10 km offshore. Qatar’s geology is characterized by sabkha deposits, a series of predominantly weak and karstic rock strata that creates challenging conditions for mechanized tunneling, as highlighted by the uncontrolled flooding of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) used on the Doha Metro tunnels. Risk associated with these challenges is magnified for the outfall tunnel by drive length, sub-sea elevation, and a single access point. This paper describes the outfall exploration strategy and design decisions made in light of experience gained during the collection tunnel construction. CONTEXT – STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Qatar has an arid climate with an average annual precipitation of less than 100 mm. Precipitation is mostly confined to the winter months when rare, but occasionally heavy rainfall events easily lead to flooding in Doha’s metropolitan area. Its coastal location and flat topography a few meters above the sea level mean that the depth to the groundwater table is generally shallow. The karstic aquifers in the regional dolomite and limestone series contain groundwater of high salinity, which is not suitable as a potable water source. For supplying Doha’s population of more than 900,000 (2014) with potable water, the Ras Abu Fontas seawater desalination plant is operated about 10 km south of the city. This potable water production capacity is crucial for Doha’s development and – in conjunction with overirrigation and leaking sewage tanks – is also the root cause for rising groundwater tables that have been observed over the past years."

Shafts are critical components of the mine ventilation systems and contribute significantly to the mine ventilation pressure. Estimation of shaft pressure losses is an important aspect of mine ventilation planning and shaft frictional pressure losses are extensively studies. Shock losses contributed by shaft buntons are estimated using the interference factor model developed half a century ago. This study aims to develop a better performing prediction model for shaft buntons using state of the art experiment and numerical data, and machine learning techniques. Results show that the present prediction model is performing poorly, and the prediction performance can be improved by incorporating additional predictor variables. The Artificial Neural Network standardized Machine Learning model developed in this study is able to predict the shaft bunton shock loss with high accuracy (R2 = 0.956).

Good morning ladies and gentlemen - today I am in an enviable position for two basic reasons - No. 1, since I am first on the program, the audience should start out awake because those that partied too much last night are still asleep, but in their room, not here. No. 2, since copper, iron, and mining technology are not competitive, the veracity of my statements will not be questioned. Most such meetings I attend are based on the subject of energy and the coal industry does have competition from oil, gas, hydro, and nuclear. However, to counteract this advantage I am the usual engineer with a limited vocabulary by schooling, and the remaining vocabulary almost completely eliminated due to the presence of ladies. In relation to the past of the coal industry, we have not only suffered the competition of other energy sources mentioned before, but in addition have in the last 25 to 30 years been required to meet the demands of a vastly changing market. To explain this statement, I am sure many of you can remember 30 to 40 years back when most homes were heated by coal furnaces or stoves and shudder to recall the shoveling of coal into the fire and the carrying out of ashes with the attendent manual labor dust. Now this space heating portion of our sales has almost become non-existant due to an almost universal switch from coal to natural gas, oil, and electric heating. Actual figures show a decrease from 119 million to less than 28 million tons per year in less than a twenty year span. Also, most of you can remember the coal burning steam locomotives and the tremendous volume of coal they consumed and then the very rapid change to the diesel-electric locomotives, incorporating improved large diesel engines driving D C generators and electric drive motors, which resulted in cheaper motive power. This change over was so complete that the annual tonnage of coal dropped from 125 million to less than 2 million tons in 15 years. &apos;Actually, now it requires some considerable interrogation and traveling to find a locomotive still operating on steam.

In this study, the effect of cations, Na+ and Mg2+, in saline water on copper flotation in the presence of calcium bentonite was investigated. It was found that as the concentration of NaCl was increased, the copper recovery initially decreased and then increased to above 99%, while the copper grade initially increased and then decreased. In contrast, as the concentration ofMgCl2 was increased, the copper recovery continuously increased, while the copper grade continuously decreased. The variation of copper recovery and grade was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of pulp rheology and flotation solution chemistry. The underpinning mechanisms are the compressing electrical double layer and ion-exchange interaction between saline water and bentonite, which occur at the same time. Using salinewater slightly affected the pulp rheologywith a decrease in copper recovery at low NaCl concentration. Increasing the concentration of cations in saline water might even facilitate the flowing out of exchangeable cations, especially divalent cations, from the interlayer space of bentonite to the solution, resulting in the decrease of copper grade at high salt concentration.
