"Heat and humidity buildup within refuge alternatives (RAs) may expose occupants to physiological hazards such as heat stress. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require RAs in underground coal mines to provide a life-sustaining environment for miners trapped underground when escape is impossible. RAs are required to sustain life for 96 hours while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 95°F (35°C). NIOSH tested a 10-person tent-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 6-person metal-type RA in NIOSH underground coal mine facilities to investigate the thermal environment over a 96-hour period. The test results showed that mine air and mine strata temperatures surrounding an RA occupied by simulated miners increased over the 96-hour test period. The test results suggest that RA manufacturers should consider this increase in temperatures when calculating and evaluating RA components during surface and laboratory tests. The findings can equip stakeholders with additional considerations for calculating heat and humidity temperature profiles for RAs not tested in situ. INTRODUCTION RAs are designed to provide a life-sustaining environment for miners who cannot escape after a mine disaster. One of the major considerations for integrating RAs in mine environments is the thermal environment inside the RA and the impact that the surrounding mine conditions have on the temperature and humidity buildup. Previous research has observed that the metabolic heat of the occupants and the heat released by the CO2 scrubbing systems will cause the RA interior air temperature to increase. In addition to the increase in temperature, an occupant’s respiration and perspiration, as well as the chemical reaction of the scrubbing chemicals with CO2, will contribute to an increase in humidity within the RA. The resulting internal thermal conditions, if not controlled, can subject miners to conditions that can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or even death depending on the duration and magnitude of exposure. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and wind speed. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures when workplaces are not sufficiently heated, cooled, or insulated to provide comfortable or healthy conditions. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require that RAs must be designed to ensure that the internal AT does not exceed 95°F (35°C) when the RA is fully occupied."

Along with increased production from longwall units has come the likelihood of increased worker noise exposures. In recent years, equipment has become larger, more powerful, and noisier than its predecessors. For these reasons, the Mining Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating worker noise exposure on longwall faces and researching possible solutions to reduce this exposure. Part of this research effort involves studying the effect of covering the underside of longwall shields with acoustical material to reduce reverberating noise along the face. Experiments using acoustical absorptive insulation to cover the undersides of the shields, shearer body, and the shield supports were conducted at the full scale simulated longwall test facility located at the Pittsburgh Research Center. Sound levels were recorded every l.5 m [5 ft] along a 15.2 m [50 ft] section of the simulated face for all of the conditions tested. The analysis of the data indicated that a 2.0-3.0 dBA noise reduction was achieved between the shearer drums and a 4.0-5.5 dBA attenuation was attained upwind of the headgate drum.

A flowsheet for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores was developed. The flowsheet involves acid leaching followed by hydroxide precipitation of the metal values and then releaching of the hydroxide cake with ammonia. Investigations of the chemistry of extraction of nickel by LIX® 84-I and a developmental reagent, XI-84-IT, along with the physical properties of the organic phases are described. Based on these investigations, suggestions with regard to design of a solvent-extraction plant and operating conditions were made.

Coal cleaning with traditional magnetic separation usually yields unsatisfactory results because minerals associated with coal, such as quartz, clay, pyrite and calcite, are weak-or non-magnetic. Magnetic reagent technology is a new mineral processing technology with the capability to enhance the magnetic property of minerals selectively. This reagent can be adsorbed selectively on minerals through the control of surface chemistry and, thus, result in selective magnetic enhancement. The application of this technology on coal cleaning has been experimentally demonstrated. Good separation results can be obtained at low to medium magnetic field strength. Comparison with other processing technologies is included.

This paper reviews major developments in continuous haulage technology for underground coal mines. Haulage systems in use and development are investigated through a comprehensive literature search and visits to mines and manufacturers. The systems include flexible conveyor train, mobile conveyor, multiple- unit continuous haulage, extensible and belt turning systems. Strengths and weaknesses of the systems are assessed in light of their operating under remote control and their application to the computer-assisted continuous mining machine being developed by the US Bureau of Mines. Through mining scenarios, candidate haulage systems are conceptualized to be consistent with the capabilities of the mining machine.

The implementation of autonomous technologies for production in surface mines demands changes in the existing monitoring and control systems. The present study deals with the concepts involved in the development of a decision support system (DSS) for the supervision of a combined fleet of manned and unmanned equipment operating in a surface mine. The project was carried out as part of an autonomous mining program that lasted from early 2006 until the end of 2008. The objective of the DSS was to achieve short-term planning goals while maintaining safe working conditions. Supervisory tasks become more complex when several autonomous vehicles operate simultaneously alongside manned equipment. The operation center where the DSS was installed allowed autonomous vehicle operations to be controlled while tracking technology reliability experiments performed on control display interfaces and interaction provided design parameters for more complex supervisory systems for autonomous mines. The “Building Our Future” project is a collaborative initiative between the UNC SME Student Chapter and the Water and Earth Museum (MAT) of Asociación Los Andes Cajamarca (ALAC), both corporate entities of Newmont Yanacocha. Its mission is to promote responsible and sustainable mining among new generations while fostering a culture of equality and respect. This comprehensive educational program integrates sustainable development goals and includes workshops led professionals and external experts who share their personal stories to inspire students from rural and urban educational institutions to follow their dreams. Additionally, for this year 2024, the project development and implemented an interactive mobile application that educates users about the use of minerals in everyday life through four levels: Minerals in the Home, Minerals in Medicine, Minerals in Transportation, and Minerals in Agriculture. This multi-faceted approach seeks to raise awareness about the importance of mining in Peru’s economic, environmental, and social development, ultimately fostering a new generation of informed and engaged citizens who understand the vital role of mining in a sustainable future.

"The contract C931 of the downtown line 3 (DTL3) mass rapid transit system of Singapore includes half a kilometer twin tunnels running between Mattar and Macpherson stations. An EPB TBM of 6.6 m diameter was used to excavate both of these tunnels. The tunnels pass predominantly through a very stiff silty/clayey fine to coarse sand from the Old Alluvium Formation. In this paper, TBM selection procedure, TBM performance evaluation, and some of the tunneling operation challenges with the TBM in the Old Alluvium Formation are discussed. In this regard, soil conditioning trial tests were performed to resolve the clogging issue and low TBM performance. Thorough TBM operational data analysis was performed to detect high soil abrasivity, backfill grout leakage, and foam nozzle clogging. The results of some of the applied modifications are also discussed to show their effects on the TBM performance improvement. Finally, some of the challenging TBM design specifications are also discussed. INTRODUCTION Tunneling and underground construction in Singapore has been increased in the last 30 years due to the demand for public transportation systems and the limited space above the ground for the infrastructure development. Downtown Line Stage 3 (DTL3) Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system has 21 km total route length and consists of 16 stations. DTL3 Contract C931 runs between Mattar station and MacPherson station. The construction works in this contract include twin bored tunnels of 6.6 m diameter and 450 m length and a TBM launch shaft of nearly 30 m depth. The tunnels run in urban area below Kallang Paya Lebar Expressway tunnel (KPE), Kallang River Canal, and Circuit Link. Figure 1 shows the alignment of the tunnels in between two subway stations. The tunnels were excavated by an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) through the Old Alluvium (OA) formation, a challenging geological formation in the sense of its abrasivity and stiffness. The Old Alluvium Formation mostly includes stiff to very stiff clayey and silty sand. The soil is un-weathered cemented to semi-cemented dense, mainly with a low permeability coefficient of 10-7 m/s and high SPT values (almost 100). The soil is classified as “very high abrasive” according to NTNU SAT test classification (SAT value of 15 to 42). The construction of the first tunnel drive was slowed down due to a number of factors related to soil conditioning and TBM operation. In this regard, a thorough analysis of the TBM operational parameters from the excavated sections was performed to identify the problems in time to prevent unwanted construction delays in the subsequent sections. In the following sections, a brief overview of the criteria used for TBM selection is presented at first. Then, the results from the analyses and tests performed to assess soil conditioning, grout leakage, and soil abrasion are presented. The last section discusses some of the tunneling design features that challenged the TBM operation in this project."

The potential of rockfall at open-pit mines presents a continuous hazard to mine workers and is typically mitigated by designing catch benches at empirically determined widths. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is working in conjunction with industry and academia to revisit and update current catch bench guidelines to better match acceptable risk tolerances for modern mining practices. To begin this process, a rockfall testing program was designed to gather empirical runout and bench catchment data at partnering mine sites in the Western United States. This paper presents a detailed description of each component of the rockfall testing program, including scouting and safety plan development, equipment requirements, synthetic rock development for uniform testing across varying bench configurations, local rock collection for testing of mine-specific geology, data acquisition during testing, and data processing. Additionally, this paper describes how the program has been updated over time according to lessons learned during initial rockfall testing.

The phosphate mining industry is confronted everywhere in the world with financial difficulties and low prices which prohibit further investments and development of new mines even in regions with a comparative cost advantage (North America/ North Africa/ and Middle East). But old mines are being progressively exhausted/ and if no replacement mines come on stream in the near future/ we may soon find ourselves (around the year 2000) with a global annual production capacity of 160 million tonnes of marketable phosphate rock instead of the capacity of 200 million tonnes existing today. Unless prices improve/ phosphate rock/ a non-renewable resource and a vital commodity to world agriculture/ may turn to be in short supply to world fertilizer industry. Whatever the extent of recovery of fertilizer demand/ the expected decline of the production capacity during the 1990 I s is bound to cause the disappearance by the year 2000 of the important surplus characterizing today the supply/demand balance.

Mining can be categorized as a hazardous activity, considering some factors such as environmental conditions with a considerable presence of humidity, suspended particles, or falling rocks have affected the severity and number of accidents compared with other economic sectors. The industry analyzes incident reports to narrow the rate of severe injuries and fatalities, conducting root cause analysis and identifying leading indicators. As the International Council on Mining and Metals noted, the vast trove of incident data is not analyzed as much as possible due to a lack of analytics expertise at mine sites. However, machine learning could solve the problem of analyzing all the incident data in a no-timeconsuming way, considering the abundant data, and without using expert personnel in data science. Thus, a Convolutional Neural Network and a Naïve Bayes model were introduced to perform classification in the MSHA database. The database from 2020 consists of 60 fields to describe safety incidents; these fields include mine I.D., accident date, subunit (mill, surface), material extracted, and other metadata.

Commercial computer "time-sharing" is a new and powerful tool for the engineer. It is a system of virtually simultaneous use of a digital computer by several individuals. Access to the computer is by means of a conventional teletypewriter which transmits over the regular telephone lines to the computer which may be located any distance from the user. Complex or repetitive computations can be programmed and the speed of computation is many times that which one can do with slide rule and desk calculator. The availability of such a commercial computer "time-sharing" system offered an opportunity to transform a tedious and time-consuming task into one that requires only a few minutes. Until the work of F. C. Bond produced widely accepted mathematical statements concerning the performance of grinding mills, the selection of the proper size equipment was done by comparison with similar operating equipment. Allis-Chalmers systematized Bond's work in a bulletin published in 1963 but the calculations are laborious and the final mill selection still required comparison of the calculated power draw with the power requirements listed in equipment catalogs. This was, however, a step forward from previous procedures. This paper discusses a rapid and simple method of determining the size and power requirement of overflow ball mills. A shared-time computer program has been developed which rapidly calculates and displays the physical dimensions, power requirements, grinding media size and quantity, as well as the important correction factors used. All of these data are calculated from input information which is usually available.

"Tunnel face instability is one of the most common issues in EPB tunneling. The evaluation of an ideal face support pressure is a critical element in the design and construction phases of EPB tunneling. In this study, measured tunnel face pressures in three EPB tunneling projects (University Link U230 and U220 projects and the Northgate Link Extension N125 Project) for Sound Transit in Seattle, WA are compared with the calculated analytical methods. This comparison shows that the analytical methods generally overestimate the required tunnel face support. The best practice for managing the face pressure in EPB tunneling operation is discussed based on the experience gained through these projects. Furthermore, the algorithm that is developed for identifying ground loss in these projects is addressed. INTRODUCTION Earth pressure balanced tunneling relies on using muck within the chamber to support the face. Muck is pressurized by controlling the advance rate of the tunnel boring machine and the speed of the screw conveyor. Target face pressure is typically calculated by using the geotechnical assumptions in the geotechnical baseline report. The concept behind EPB tunneling is that the application of sufficient face support pressure will prevent tunnel face instability and the resultant over excavation. Tunnel face instabilities caused by a lack of sufficient face support can lead to ground loss and surface settlement (Anagnostou & Kovári 1996, Kirsch 2010). A certain support pressure must be achieved to counteract water and earth pressure with an adequate factor of safety. While the water pressure can be predicted accurately, the determination of the resultant earth pressure on the face is less precise. This becomes manifested in the relatively high partial safety factors on the earth pressure."

In today's "information age", we have the ability to collect volumes of data about a company's performance. The challenge is to turn that data into information employees can understand and use to fine-tune equipment, modify work processes, and ultimately manage production. Software programs have increasingly given end users control over what data is used and how it is presented. Kennecott has implemented an information system capable of collecting and storing data at the primary level. This enables plant personnel to transform historical data into information for action. Kennecott plans to expand its data collection and use trending and reporting capabilities to move toward a fully optimized operation.

"THAT WHICH WE CANNOT SEE" INTRODUCTION Often it has been stated that the greatest of all fears is fear itself - fear created only by that which we cannot see or by that which we fail to understand. The elimination or minimization of fear can best be accomplished by a thorough understanding of the underlying causes of the fear. As related to the mining industry the omnipresent fear is the dread of acquiring cancer through accumulated exposure to "that which we cannot see" - radioactivity. The understanding of the resulting exposure effects can best be obtained through acquisition of authentic data and the subsequent analysis of the same by a group of highly qualified specialists. I may point out that the nuclear industry and its source, uranium mining, greatly surpass any other industries in the degree of public awareness as to its potential environmental effects. Public out-cry has always influenced major decisions relating to how industries conduct their operations and much of their effort has resulted in many changes. The issues of health and safety in the mining industry have created considerable public concern, but intense concern to those of us directly involved within the industry. Increasing concern regarding the effect of human activity on the quality of the outer environment of air, land, and water has developed within the past two decades. There is now a growing concern about the health and safety of persons at work in their inner environment, of their working-places in industry. Hearings and investigations conducted in Canada by three appointed "Royal Commissions" have all confirmed that this concern is well justified when focused on the health and safety of workers in our mines. REGULATORY CONTROL OF URANIUM MINING OPERATIONS In Canada, the ownership of mineral resources and the control of their extraction, except for uranium, is vested under the "British North America Act" in the provinces. In all provinces the statutory basis for health and safety provisions in the mining industry can be found in the provincial "Mining Acts" with each province assuming the responsibility to produce its own "Mining Act". In particular, all of the Mining Acts in Canada place upon the management of a mine the responsibility to ensure that provincial provisions are met. Within the exploration programs carried on by the Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables, the one with the largest coverage (more than 75, 000 square kilometers) is the northern Coahuila Exploration Project. Due to its nature, geochemical exploration methods were selected to obtain quick results. The program included essentially, three main stages : 1. - A regional geochemical stream sediment survey. 2. - Semi-detailed studies of the anomalous areas selected in the previous stage, and 3. - Detailed exploration of the promising areas. To the date, the first two stages have been completed, and the third one is being carried on. The work was started on september 1972, and it will probably take one more year before drilling can be started, but at the end of stage three it is expected that at least 5 important targets will have been detected. The regional work was conducted by 3 field crews, but the detailed program is being done by only one.

Gold Fields Mining Corporation is presently evaluating gold mineralization beneath thick, wet alluvium at the Chimney Creek Project, Nevada. Contamination of reverse circulation samples has been visually apparent since drilling began in the area. Tests have shown that, while contamination can affect assays, reverse circulation holes appear to define mineralized zones almost as well as the diamond drill holes. To improve reverse circulation sample integrity several techniques were tried including a stiff-mud injection system but with limited success. Diamond core drilling continues to be used in conjunction with reverse circulation drilling to further delineate the mineralization.

Granite Construction Company operates a rock quarry in the rugged Santa Cruz Mountains of central California indicated in Figure 1. Open pit methods are used to mine decomposed granite which is processed to produce sand, gravel, decorative rock and asphalt. The quarry is located near the village of Felton about five miles inland from the coast of the Pacific Ocean, and is near the campus of the University of California at Santa Cruz and several California State Parks. The area is heavily forested and is considered by residents to be environmentally sensitive. Because of the scenic beauty of the area and proximity to the San Francisco Bay area, a project such as a quarry receives the attention of regional residents and environmental organizations.

"Owners constructing new combined sewer overflow (CSO) systems increasingly seek to have project design lives of 100 or more years in response to the growing size, complexity, and cost to construct and operate these systems. However, a codified and universally accepted approach to achieving this goal in the United States does not currently exist since service life prediction is a relatively new technical field. This paper discusses how the 100-year design life requirement was met for the design of tunnels, drop shafts, and diversion structures in the DC Clean Rivers Program (DCCRP). The authors identify some commonly referenced publications, present the testing framework used by the program manager to characterize the CSOs, review the design criteria used to guide the 100-year design life development, and establish guidelines to be considered by program managers and designers when implementing similar extended design life requirements in other CSO control programs.INTRODUCTIONLike many older cities in the United States, the sewer system in the District of Columbia consists of both combined sewers and separate sanitary sewers. When the capacity of a combined sewer is exceeded during storm events, the excess flow, which is a mixture of sewage and storm water runoff, is discharged to the District’s receiving water bodies (Anacostia River, Potomac River, and Rock Creek) and tributaries through outfall structures. This excess discharge during storm events is called a combined sewer overflow or CSO. A total of 53 CSO outfalls for the combined sewer system are listed in DC Water’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The DC Clean Rivers Program (DCCRP) will reduce the number of CSO outfalls into the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and decrease flooding in DC neighborhoods during extreme rain events by capturing, storing, and conveying diverted CSOs to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant."

Definition of glass sand prospects may be modified by constraints which range from demography to critically important product-control. Characteristics of usable raw materials, physical and chemical, are discussed; an ideal raw material is defined. Following field investigations and preliminary sampling, evaluation of selected prospects includes use of modern drilling techniques, viz.: core, percussion (air-hammer), auger, jet, rotary jet, split-spoon and other. Nearly complete core (sample) return is mandatory. Land-use regulations, availability of water and transportation continue to direct exploration in a major sense. But fitting a prospect to burdensome politics nay be considered a decidedly negative factor.
