The floatability of a bituminous coal in NaG solutions was evaluated using a modified Hallimond tube to delineate the role of the electrostatic interaction between bubbles and particles in determining the coal hydrophobicity. Zeta potential measurements showed that bubbles are negatively charged in the entire pH range tested, while coal particles are positively charged below pH 6.0 and negatively charged above it. Also, both sodium and chloride ions were confirmed to act as indifferent ions without any specific effects for both coal particles and bubbles. Flotation as a function of pH exhibited a maximum and minimum at low salt concentrations which is shown to be determined mainly by the coal hydrophobicity as measured by a new hydrophobic levitation technique. At high salt concentrations (above 0.1 mole/dm3), the flotation without such maximum or minimum is controlled by the electrostatic interaction between the bubble and the particle.

With the end of active copper mining in 1983, the extensive underground mine workings and the Berkeley Pit, one of the largest open-pit mines in the United States, began to flood. Daily in- flow to the pit is about five million gallons per day, with the water level rising at a rate of 30 feet per year. To support the remedial investigation and feasibility study, a six-layer, three-dimensional MODFLOW-based ground water flow model was constructed to simulate the 9,100-acre site. The vertical domain of the model extended over 1,060 feet of elevation difference and consisted of a finite difference grid of 89 rows by 54 columns. All work was PC- based. Model boundaries were assigned to correspond to natural hydrologic features such as geologic contacts, faults, and surface water features. The fully calibrated model was approved by the State of Montana and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in the site remediation. The computer model was used to determine ground water flow velocities and contaminant travel times within the alluvial sediments adjacent to the Berkeley Pit. The purpose of the model was to predict future alluvial ground water flow directions should acid- and heavy metal-laden flood waters filling the Berkeley Pit rise up and enter the Alluvial Aquifer.

Starting up a fan or modifying its setting point either by rotational speed variations or blade angle changes, obviously results in new ventilation conditions in the network, which is, of course, the object of the operation. However, since transient phenomena may then occur, particularly in complex networks, there may be a need to simulate these situations prior to any action. This is all the more true, if we are dealing with a multiple interactive fan sys- tem. Simulations with a transient model have shown that the flow in certain airways could be temporarily reversed due to the pres- sure variations that reach both its ends with a different time lag. This phenomenon may cause dangerous situations to occur in cases of fire or outburst of methane. It is also true that the air flow could be reversed in secondary and less powerful fans, while still rotating in the normal direction. The study and the experimental investigation of the extension of the reverse flow characteristic is therefore justified from two points of view : • a numerical simulation model for transient flow conditions must be capable of handling temporary reversed flows, and thus have appropriate fan characteristic curves available over the entire operating domain; • while operating fans, reversed flows should be avoided or at least reduced. Therefore, the design of start-up procedures or real time control algorithms should take these phenomena into account. A particular interesting application is the operating of two fans in parallel. In order to investigate experimentally the characteristic curves of a fan under reversed flow conditions a small scale model was built. This facility was designed in such a manner that it was possible to carry out experiments concerning flow reversions and to try out sequential start-up procedures for two fans in parallel.

Screening during the production of high-grade lump ore for blast furnace burden, particularly from recently developed ore deposits in Australia, South America, and Africa, has resulted in large tonnages of fine iron ore. Certain owners have decided to stockpile these fines until some later date; however, others have either sold these fines "as is" for agglomeration at the steel plant or have established their own pelletizing plants to produce a premium quality agglomerate. Normally these fines consist of the higher oxides of iron and the hydrated oxides. Unfortunately, grinding these types of materials in a wet process produces a slurry that is difficult to filter to obtain the requisite moisture level for the subsequent balling and indurating operations. The purpose of this paper is to review recent developments in fine dry grinding of iron ore and to discuss the various design and operating parameters involved. Although dry grinding of raw feed and clinker has been practiced in the cement industry for many decades, its significant application to the iron ore industry has taken place within the past ten years. Even though the basic concept of dry grinding has been borrowed from the cement industry, the successful application to iron ore grinding has not taken place without some difficulties. Consequently, the application to iron ore has required the solution of several unique design and operating problems.

Placer mining in Alaska had a desultory inception at Sumdum in 1869 and, during the years 1880 to 1896, received thin nourishment from the readily exhausted gold placers at Juneau and the longer- lived deposits in the Circle, Fortymile, and Rampart Districts. Finally, in 1897, the great Klondike discovery in Canada's Yukon Territory brought thousands of gold seekers to the Far North. These men, in successive, far-reaching gold rushes, found the large, rich gold deposits at Nome, Fairbanks, and Iditarod, as well as many smaller placers. The hectic rushes during the years from 1898 to 19 10 were comprised of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of "stampeders," as they were called. Since very many Alaskan creeks, from the crest of the Brooks Range in the north to the Pacific Ocean in the south, carry at least a few flakes of gold, there was ample seed to start a new stampede. Of the 100s of reported "strikes," nearly 50 became more or less important placer mining districts; by 1910 they had produced about 184.2 fine Mg (6.5 million fine oz) of gold; the all- time peak production year was 1906. A few of the miners and prospectors prospered, but the total value of all gold produced failed, by a wide margin, to cover the aggregate costs incurred by them in the undeveloped Territory of Alaska. On the other hand, the traders with their readily salable supplies of food, tools, and hardware and the freighters with their teams of dogs or horses and boats of all kinds profited throughout the era of stampede.

The importance of grinding as a unit operation in all industry has caused much effort to be expended toward improving the facility with which grinding can be done. Endeavor has continued nearly 100 years to formulate laws governing crushing and grinding. This has not been without controversy. However, grinding is an experimental science and our useful knowledge originates in experience. The recorded experience is grinding history. Today, many types of size reduction equipment, each with variations, are available to industry. Frequently, more than one type of grinding equipment will meet a requirement of grinding. However, an economic evaluation of installation and operating costs generally indicates a preferred type. The selection of grinding equipment requires' a consideration of the purpose in grinding, the characteristics of the material to be ground, equipment available for grinding, and the manner in which it can be applied best.

The Ag/S specific ion electrode has been evaluated for analysis of both free and total cyanide. Metal cyanide solutions were prepared from reagent grade compounds and by stoichiometric fixture of the metal with a potassium cyanide solution. Solutions containing Cu+1, Ni+2, Fe+2, Fe+3 and Zn+2 complexes were analyzed prior to and following EDTA pre treatment. This effort provides an understanding of the effect of each metal cyanide complex on the SIE analysis of free and "total" cyanide.

INTRODUCTION The driving of drifts is a very important aspect of underground mining. It is not unusual for the percent¬age of rock broken during development in a mine using sublevel caving, for example, to be as much as 25% of the total. If one also considers the amount broken for transport, ventilation, and exploration drifts, one can easily understand that the planning and excavation of drifts play a major part in the total economics of the mine (Fig. 1). Increasing mechanization in mining demands larger tunnel areas for transport and mining equipment. With modern machines the hard work involved in using hand¬held pushers is gone, and a better environment is achieved. More rational methods could be used, but much of the experience the working man acquired by working close to the rock face (such as utilizing the natural weak planes in the rock when he placed the drill¬ing holes) has unfortunately been lost. By having sepa¬rate shifts for drilling, loading, and hauling, more atten¬tion has to be placed upon a well-designed drilling pattern. Some reduction in the number of holes required can be achieved with mechanized drilling because of the larger holes that can be produced. On the other hand, it is probably not possible to achieve the same precision as with pneumatic pushers, and it is difficult to utilize the larger holes because these cause more damage to the re¬maining rock. Recently, however, the precision has be¬come very good with the parallel booms and automatic devices for setting the lookout angle (Fig. 2). A larger arch of the drift roof requires a more carefully executed blasting procedure than before in order to prevent rock fall and to insure a sufficiently long stand-up time. In this chapter, empirical relationships that can be used to design an economic and optimal drift blasting design will be presented. The principles of the calcula¬tion method are based upon the earlier work of Langefors and Kihlström (1963) and Gustafsson (1973). COMPARISON OF EXPLOSIVES To provide for the use of various explosives it is necessary to have a basis of comparison. Several meth¬ods have been developed to characterize the strength of an explosive. Some examples are comparison of values given by (1) calculated explosion energies; (2) the ballistic mortar test; (3) the Trauzl lead block test; (4) the brisance test; (5) the weight strength concept; and (6) the underwater test. The Underground Research Laboratory (URL) , a major geotechnical research facility, is currently being developed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) , 120 km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The URL is part of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program, which is assessing the concept of nuclear fuel waste disposal in a vault deep in stable plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield (Simmons, 1986). Comprehensive geotechnical research and development activities are being carried out in conjunction with excavation? and construction of the underground facilities.

The win theme of this session is Unique Material Handing Systems. The theme was selected because of two major factors. 1. Accomplishments of unique character manage to attract interest regardless of their age. 2. There is much to be learned from pioneering efforts of the past as they are the stepping stones to technological development. Thus, 2-1/2 years after completion, the engineering feat of Oroville Dam still looms large let us take a close look at this project to see what made it unique. To begin with, it established a number of firsts: At 770 feet it was the highest earth fill dam in the world. At $121 million dollars, it was the largest ever United States construction project (Civil). At 80 million cubic yards it had the largest earth volume of any dam in the world. The extensive use of belt conveyors for this application had never before been tried. The use of a high capacity bucket wheel-excavator with shiftable belt conveyors had never before been utilized as a con¬tractor's tool. The principal of the "integral train" was applied most effectively whereby up to 220,000 tons of material-was transported daily some 14 miles. To achieve optimum economics a number of technical breakthroughs were necessary. The suppliers of major commercial components worked hand-in-hand with system engineers to develop new machinery necessary for the highly mobile characteristics of the systems, viz., single pulley drives delivering 2000 horsepower, 1000 horsepower right-angle shaft-mounted reducers, across the line starting of 1000 horsepower squirrel cage motors, 10 miles of steel chord conveyor belts with belt tensions up to 150,000 pounds, aircraft-type disc brakes, hydraulic take-ups, train loading at a rate of 25,000 tons per hour, automatic train indexing for rotary dumping at 10,000 tons per hour, roll-over car dumping without uncoupling cars, shifting 7500 ft. long conveyors up to 300 feet laterally without disassembly. These are some of the superlatives that have made the Oroville Dam project unique. The measure of its success is demonstrated by the results.

From a distance, the 0.75-km (0.5-mile) rail line that sits in the shadows of Vale-Inco?s Stobie Mine outside of Sudbury, Ontario could be mistaken for a standard conveyor belt hauling ore from the nearby mine. But with its large, yellow-painted loop and interconnected green rail cars that invert themselves on the loop before correcting with a smooth rollover further down the track, one might assume that this is some sort of test track for a new roller coaster. The fact of the matter is that it is the proving ground for Rail-Veyor technology, a technology that the company hopes will one day change the face of ore transportation in surface and underground mines around the world. With a line of linked, low-profile rail cars that are capable of carrying up to 1 t (1.1 st) per car of ore by way of simple, above ground, lightweight rail track, the technology is not groundbreaking. In fact, it was developed in the 1960s for the French State Railroad. A demonstration plant for the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research was installed in 2000 and the first commercial under-ground installation was in 2007 in South Africa at Harmony Gold?s Phakisa Mine. There, a 4.7-km- (2.9-mile-) long tram between two shafts operates three Rail-Veyor trains on a shared track. The difference is that the application that is being tested day-and-night in Sudbury is getting closer to wide production, thanks to the use of computer controlled automation that has helped turn an old idea into a cost-effective modern solution.

This paper reviews the historical background leading to the development of the project. It gives a description of the exploration program and resulting geological and ore reserve information together with plans for mining. A discussion is included of the three processes investigated for the project: 1. Rotary Hearth and Magnetic Concentration 2. Shaft Furnace and Electric Furnace 3. Rotary Kiln and Electric Furnace Results of pilot plant campaigns conducted at Fiskaa, Norway, and Riddle, Oregon, on the process chosen for the production of ferronickel are presented. The paper continues with a review of the considerations involved in selection of commercial plant equipment and concludes with comments on the current status of the project.

Introduction Tailings disposal methods used by the mining industry include the use of on-land impoundments, surface and underground mine backfill and marine disposal. The latter method, where applicable and under certain circumstances, can be the most economical and best environmental option. The term marine disposal is used to describe deposition of tailings in the open ocean, coastal waters, fjords and inland lakes. A major element in planning and designing a marine outfall is the assessment of its potential environmental impacts. The nature of the disposed tailings, and the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the receiving water body must be carefully assessed prior to deciding whether marine disposal is an acceptable option for a particular project. During the last decade, the North American mining industry has demonstrated a commitment to studying potential adverse environmental impacts of marine tailings disposal and to continue monitoring of the receiving waters. Extensive monitoring programs have been undertaken by Canadian mines. Marine tailings disposal is not used in the United States today. One of the largest U.S. mines proposing to use this option is the Quartz Hill mine of U.S. Borax in Southeastern Alaska. To assure the regulatory agencies and the public of the viability and acceptability of this option, U.S. Borax undertook an extensive program of environmental studies aimed at assessing the impact of marine tailings disposal. This program was part of the feasibility and environmental permitting studies conducted by Bechtel Civil & Minerals, Inc, on behalf of U.S. Borax. Due to the unique nature of the proposed tailings disposal system, a Board of Consultants was established. The Board assisted in planning the modeling and field program and reviewed ongoing work. This paper outlines the basic elements of the marine tailings disposal study program which can be viewed as a prototype for similar studies elsewhere. Background The Quartz Hill molybdenum deposit is located on a knoll in an elevated valley in a mountainous region of southeast Alaska, about 45 miles east of Ketchikan (Figure 1).

INTRODUCTION Friction Rock Stabilizers, commonly called Split Sets,tm* have been under development since early 1973. Five years of intensive laboratory and field testing led to their introduction to the metal mines in the United States in the fall of 1976. Actual sales started in February of 1977 and, to date, over five million units have been marketed to metal mines. The present rate of useage is near 3 1/2 million units per year which is approximately 50 per cent of all roof fixtures used in the United States metal mining industry. Mr. Richard Hoppe, Senior Editor of Engineering & Mining Journal, in an article of the February, 1979, issue, entitled "Winning the Battle Against Bad Ground", said, "In hardrock mining operations in the western U.S., particularly underground uranium mines where exceedingly difficult ground is common, no roof support system has been accepted more quickly than the Split Set friction bolt invented by Dr. James J. Scott and developed by Ingersoll-Rand Co." This paper describes how Friction Rock Stabilizers function and presents technical data to show the uniqueness of the Friction Stabilizer system. INTRODUCTION Safety must be a primary consideration in the design and construction of tunnels. Tunnel construction has historically been considered a high-risk business. During the construction of the 14.8 kilometer (9.25) mile St. Gotthard Tunnel in the Swiss Alps in the 1870s, 310 lives were lost and another 877 workers permanently disabled. In more recent days, two tunnel construction accidents in 1971, one in Michigan and one in California, claimed the lives of 38 workers. Prior to 1971, most regulations governing safety in tunnel construction were developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These included a 1941 Bulletin 439, "Some Essential Safety Factors for Tunneling" and a 1968 Bulletin 644 which updated Bulletin 439. In 1970, the United States passed the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA) which became effective in early 1971. That act covered all sorts of workplace activities including Tunnels and Shafts in 29 CFR 1926.800. In 1989, a revised and renamed 29 CFR 1926.800 was issued for Underground Construction. Some of the changes introduced in this rule were the outgrowth of improvements made in the California and Michigan codes after the 1971 accidents. These new regulations are the "Rules to Live By" for tunnel construction in the United States and are generally accepted as appropriate for tunnel construction throughout the world.

The phenomenon of radioactivity has been known since the turn of the last century. Scientists of many nations, intrigued by the strange effects of radioactivity, have engaged in research to probe the heretofore presumed, but largely unknown world of atomic structures and subatomic- particles. A theory evolved of splitting the atom, thus providing insight into the structure of matter and opening the way to possibly create new materials. Many years of effort culminated in the first chain reaction in 1942. The beginning of the atomic age was drastically demonstrated by the flash of the large scale chain reaction of the first atom bomb. It was actual proof of the incredible energies contained in matter.

INTRODUCTION From 1967 to 1976 in the Federal Republic of Germany about loo km tunnels and 125 underground stations were constructed for municipal and commuter railways solely. Additional a remarkable amount of road tunnels and sewers were built. In 1977/78 a further 27 km railway tunnels, 3.5 km road tunnels and 65 km sewers and utility lines were under construction. This shows an enormous volume of tunnel construction work. In connection with this activity various technical research and development programmes have been carried out. They deal with nearly all fields of underground works as for example soil and ground exploration, excavating and lining techniques, calculation and last but not least waterproofing problems. It is impossible within the framework of this report to touch on all the problems. Therefore, only one problem area with its different aspects will be discussed: waterproofing systems and their last developments in Germany, especially, joint sealing with special consideration of the waterproofing of concrete segmental tunnel lining (1)

Explanations of commodity price levels, or movements, commonly focus on the supply and demand fundamentals of the particular commodity, or else are assigned to speculative activity. Comparisons of metal price histories with monetary and other economic data support the argument that the supply of and demand for money are no less important in price determination than are the supply and demand of the commodity itself. That these relationships should exist is evident in the price identity and are consistent with monetary theory. The patterns developed have limited usefulness as predictors, but their recognition is essential for the construction of price scenarios for planning purposes.

The literature contains several references to the influence of copper solvent extraction reagents on crud formation, but, there is disagreement as to whether the reagent has an influence on crud generation. The results of three pilot plant campaigns, where crud generation was studied as a function of the copper solvent extraction reagent, are reported. These pilot plants were run at operating copper solvent extraction plants using the aqueous solutions being treated by the commercial copper solvent extraction plants. Two of the pilot plant studies showed that the copper solvent extraction reagent had a significant influence on the extent of crud formation while the other pilot plant study indicated the copper solvent extraction reagent had a lesser influence on crud generation.

The ore reserve modelling of stratiform uranium deposits to be mined by selective underground mining methods must be done with consideration of the erratic nature of the ore-forming processes that produced the mineralization. Estimation methods that model the uranium grade as a smooth transition between high-grade and low-grade drill hole intercepts tend to greatly overestimate the ore tonnage. Care must be taken to first establish realtistic ore pod geometries and then estimate the grade of the reserve units within the pods.
