Background Iron ore is the No. 1 metal mining industry in the U.S. with dollar value of $2.3 billion in 1984 (U.S.B.M Mineral Commodity Sunnnaries , 1985). However, during the past decade this nation's iron ore industry has been subjected to a major market depression and a correspondingly downward adjustment in output. The recent trend in the curtailment of iron ore production traces a slow-down of the country's steel industry. Both pig iron and steel production have decreased significantly over the past several years. These trends are shown in Figure 1 from data collected by the federal Bureau of Mines (U.S.B.M. Mineral Commodity Summaries, 1985; U.S.B.M. Mineral Industry Surveys 1986). The industry is presently operating at less than 60% of its annual capacity. The domestic steel industry has been forced by reduced profits or losses to close facilities, curtail operations and restructure the financial status of several corporations. Companies have been sold or are trying to sell selected properties to improve their financial circumstances. Even with such actions, many of the steel companies are in very serious straits, including the seventh largest steel company, LTV, which has filed for bankruptcy. Many of the major steel companies have financial interests in iron ore mining and thus their adverse economic conditions directly reflect those operations. Several iron ore producers have been shut down including Reserve Mining Company in May, 1986 and Butler Taconite in June, 1985. The latter recently filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11. A1 so in mid-1986, U.S. Steel Corporation, owner of the Minntac mine and iron ore processing plant, underwent corporate restructuring. The effect on their Minnesota plant is not known at this time. An excellent summary of the interrelationship of the iron ore companies and the steel producers has been provided by Skillings (1986), and an analysis of the iron ore situation was given by Robert F. Anderson, CEO of M. A. Hanna Company, in his keynote address at the 1986 University of Minnesota Mining Symposium (Anderson, 1986). Steel imports to the United States decreased slightly in 1985 because of import restrictions, but the long-term import situation remains dim and uncertain. As shown in Figure 2, the imports averaged about 25% in 1985, and the preliminary indications are that this figure could be as high as 30% when the final 1986 information is collected by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. At best, the industry can only hope for imports to stabilize at a constant level in the near future. Although the tonnage is small, the quantity of U.S. export steel has fallen over 50%. With many other materials replacing steel , the projected demand through 1990 is expected to increase only about 1% per year. Consequently, 1986 U.S. iron ore production will probably be 15% lower than in 1985. The 41 mil lion tons of iron ore production expected in 1986 represents only 53% of the industrial capacity, which is about 74.5 mil lion tons. Over 95% of this iron ore is in the form of beneficiated pellets. Today there is not an iron ore producer west of the Mississippi River, nor is there any production in the South. The Birmingham (Alabama) iron ore industry has been shut down since 1971. The western producers ceased operations in the early 1980's. Only the taconite operations in Minnesota and the plants in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan remain as our major domestic iron ore source. The economic situation for both the iron ore producers and the steel industry can be described as confused and in turmoil. Such a condition directly impacts the iron ore processing plants' operations and plans for the future. Plant Practice At present the nation's eight major operating iron ore mines, listed below, are concentrated in northern Minnesota (Mesabi Range) and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Marquette Range). "During the excavation of the north bound tunnel of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel project, deformation (convergence) was measured after passing through Fault Zone B. The tunnel convergence was not symmetrical, but was larger on the left side of the profile. It was determined that a shear zone nearly parallel with the tunnel drive was contributing to the uneven deformation. This paper will discuss how it was determined that the shear zone existed and how multi-point borehole Extensometers (MPBX) were used to verify that a significant amount of the deformation was occurring due to movement along the shear zone as the excavation was advanced. In addition, performance of the shotcrete liner in the area of the convergence will be examined. Finally, the paper will consider the means and methods that were utilized to ultimately control and stabilize the deformation. INTRODUCTION The Devil’s Slide Tunnel Project consisted of excavating two 1,250 meter tunnels each with a profile of 80 m2 utilizing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) or otherwise known as the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). The tunnels are part of the California Coastal Highway south of Pacifica, CA, a suburb of San Francisco. The tunnels were opened to traffic in March of 2013. Geological Setting The tunnels run north-south through the San Pedro Mountain ridge, which is part of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The tunnel lies within the San Andreas Fault system and is 7.2 km west of the surface trace of the San Andreas Fault and 2.8 km east of the surface trace of the San Gregorio Fault. The 10 km strip between these two faults is referred to as the La Honda structural and terrain block (Decker et al. 2010; Amini et al. 2005; Earth Mechanics Inc. 2003). Locally, the tunnel passes through three blocks representing different geological conditions: South Block, Central Block, and North Block (Figure 1) (Decker et al. 2010; HNTB Corporation et al. 2005). The South Block consists of Mesozoic aged granodiorite and quartz diorite. The South Block also contains many local shear zones and a low angle thrust fault (Fault A). The South Block ends at Fault B, which is the southern border of the Central Block."

With the advent of the Clean Air Act and the installation of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) equipment (scrubbers) on coal fired power plants, the management of solid wastes has taken on added importance. Aside from the large amounts of fly ash and bottom ash usually generated, large quantities of liquids in the form of scrubber sludge are also produced. These wastes must be disposed of within the constraints of land and water quality regulations. This paper describes the practices adopted by the electric utility industry in denting with this problem, including methods of generation and treatment, quantities and characteristics of the materials, and transportation and disposal practices. The paper also briefly describes final product characteristics and several applications for commercial utilization and land reclamation.

Surface mining and reclamation has the potential to at least temporarily increase surface runoff and resultant erosion and gully development. This increase in erosion is due in part to compaction of the soil surface with heavy equipment, creation of large relatively unvegetated watersheds, and elimination of natural dendritic ephemeral drainage patterns. Methods for stabilizing gully channels which may develop prior to establishment of sufficient vegetation to control erosion are analyzed. Utilization of various sizes of riprap for channel lining, the use of riprap check dams, reinforcement of riprap check dams, and the relation- ship of type of control structure to area of watershed and resultant flow velocities are discussed.

Longwall mining is popular in underground coal production in the United States due to higher production rates and safety concerns. Because of the extreme complexity, it is necessary to plan an adequate design to achieve a safe and efficient working place. The proper sizes of yield and abutment pillars and panels can be determined by simulation using numerical modeling techniques. By means of three-dimensional modeling, stresses to be imposed on the pillars, panels, gob, and powered supports can be analyzed. In this study, an initial three-dimensional finite element model was developed and then modified into four different models. Using these models, the numerical outputs of distributed stresses on three different sizes of yield pillars, three different sizes of panels, and two different sizes of abutment pillars were compared and analyzed to determine the most adequate pillar and panel sizes. Progressive failure theory based on the Hoek and Brown failure criterion was used to determine redistribution of stresses in the yielded and failed areas in the longwall mine.

Three spatially separate porphyry copper/molybdenum deposits are associated with the Tertiary Needle Creek igneous center in the southern Absaroka Mountains, Wyoming. In all three deposits a central zone containing disseminated copper and molybdenum is surrounded by a halo of small, discontinuous base and precious metal veins. Propylitically and phyllically altered rocks are common in all three mineralized areas, and potassically altered rocks are locally present. Fission- track age data from apatite and zircon indicate that mineralization occurred about 32-40 m.y. ago. Limited data suggest that the lead isotopes are nonradiogenic, similar to porphyry copper deposits elsewhere in the western United States. The complex igneous history of the Needle Creek center has involved several periods of intrusive and probably extrusive activity. lntrusive rocks are calc-alkalic and include andesite, granodiorite, diorite, quartz monzonite, dacite, and rhyodacite. Stocks (1-30 kmz in exposed area), radial dike swarms, and sills make up the presently exposed plutonic masses and constitute lower-level vent fillings in an old stratovolcano. The Needle Creek igneous center is located approximately midway along a northwest-trending belt of intrusive rocks extending more than 100 km along the central axis of the Absaroka volcanic field. The igneous and mineralized centers within this belt were probably localized at the intersections of northwest- trending Laramide and possibly Tertiary fracture systems and earlier northeast-trending Precambrian structures in the underlying basement rocks.

The abstract discusses the importance of predicting the dewatering performance of industrial hydrocyclones from laboratory models. It highlights the challenge of scaling up design and operating parameters for efficiency estimation. The paper describes experiments with a 2-inch and 4-inch hydrocyclone using silica sand. It details the development of a model using the Nageswararao hydrocyclone model and a simulator to estimate model parameters. The model is validated with experimental data, and a new model is developed using 4-inch hydrocyclone data. The technique is then extended to predict dimensions for a full-scale dewatering cyclone operating at higher throughput and solid concentration.

Production forecasts derived from the medium-term schedule represent the best path forward for underground mining operations to achieve corporate and operational goals. Unforeseen circumstances, such as equipment breakdown, can cause significant deviations from established production forecasts in the short term. Such situations require timely mitigation of the effects of the deviations in order to stay as close as possible to the medium-term plan. This paper presents a deterministic mathematical formulation for short-term scheduling that addresses this challenge. The formulation is able to make up for deficits resulting from operational disruptions by minimizing deviations from medium-term production goals and medium-term activity start dates. We demonstrate this in a case study by simulating disruptions involving reduction in ore extraction capacity and development advance rate. Aside from the rescheduling capability, this formulation can help mine planners conduct analysis on the impact of various disruptions on the schedule. The formulation can help identify those conditions or disruptions that are more detrimental to the achievement of forecast targets, or otherwise. The formulation also affords mine planners the flexibility to prioritize one production goal over the other, depending on operational conditions at the mine. In the future, we seek to incorporate in the formulation respirable dust, diesel particulate matter and ventilation constraints in order to create more realistic schedules, and enhance miners’ health and safety.

"The Chilean minerals industry faces a shortage of 27.000 new skilled professional by 2023. Enhancing the integration of women into the workforce is a possible solution. This study analyzes the state of women in the mining workforce over the past decade. Several key indicators are presented: percent in the workforce, salaries, career profiles, presence at management level, and participation in academia are studied. The study also analyzes the strategies used by government, industry, and universities to recruit and retain women for the minerals industry. The main results show that women represent 7.4% of the mining workforce in Chile and less than 1% of senior positions with a salary gap of approximately 30%. Systematically, women prefer professional programs in geology, chemistry, and environmental areas. The Chilean statistics are compared to data from the United States mining industry. INTRODUCTION The Chilean mining industry faces a significant shortage of professionals for the next decade which compromises competitiveness and productivity. The demand for human capital in mining depends on several factors. First, the age structure of workforce, which determines future retirement needs. Second, minerals market considerations, determining the amount and size of mining projects entering production in the coming years. Third, the evolution, positive or negative, of productivity, mainly driven by technology and innovation, and negatively affected by the declining ore grades. Finally, negative trends in lead times to production of mining projects, due to social opposition, changing regulations and other project contingencies, negatively affecting the demand for human capital. Regarding the supply of human capital, the fast increase in the technology level of the minerals industry and hence, the increase of technical qualification requirements of the human capital generates a rise in the time required for trade and university education of mining professionals, which may cause imbalances in the labor market. According to (Consejo Minero, 2014) human capital gap in Chile by 2023 will be around 27.000 workers for extractive, processing and maintenance jobs, which represents 14% of the current workforce (Figure 1)."

The title of this paper implies the presence of silver, nickel, and cobalt minerals at, the Alhambra mine. Perhaps this should be amplified to include uranium, as pitchblende also occurs, possibly in mineable quantifies. A brief history of the Alhambra mine is of interest, both from a historical angle and as pointing up the importance of geology in the-present development. The Alhambra is one of several mines in the Bullards Peak or Black Hawk dis¬trict, ass it is more familiarly known, in southwestern. New Mexico, which was mined for silver in the 1880?s and 18901s, Silver valued between $500,000 and $1,000,000 was extracted from the mine in the 10 years prior to 1893, when operations ceased. Almost all the silver mined was native silver, although a small quantity of argentite was produced. Nickel and cobalt were recognized in the ores, but they were thought to be of no consequence.

The tectonic and sedimentary environment of the Central North American Rift System (CNARS) provides all excellent setting for major mineral deposits. Major north-northeast-trending high-angle normal or reverse faults and northwest-trending transcurrent fault systems may exercise control over ore forming processes. Gabbro and basalt are the dominant igneous rock types. Carbonatite and kimberlite occur in Nebraska and Kansas. Concentrations of Cu. Ni, Co, Ti, Au. Ag and PG-minerals are known to occur in this setting. Arkosic sandstone, siltstone, shale, and minor carbonate units occur on top of the rift basalts and in flunking basins where they may reach thicknesses of 10 km (6 miles). The potential, for stratiform or unconformity-related metalliferous deposits must be considered. The rift as a whole remains, however, largely unexplored.

In the 1980's the Canadian surface mining industry was confronted by declining competitiveness in the face of low cost foreign producers and alternative materials. Low metal prices undermined profits for many mining companies. Restructuring, rationalization, capacity reduction, technology transfer, as well as favourable currency rates and higher commodity prices, helped revitalize the industry by the close of the decade. Now in the 1990's, however, the need to improve competitiveness for profitability has re-emerged in greater intensity. In the current climate it is considered that there are three strategies available to industry to ensure profitability: continued rationalization and restructuring; optimization of operating practice; and technology development and transfer.

Ion exchange resin processes are receiving renewed attention in the mining industry for recovery;, of metals from solution. This interest has been inspired by the development of continuous countercurrent ion; exchange systems (CCIX) which are of much lower cost than the original, fixed bed contactor processes. With the countercurrent systems and new developments to process or upgrade the eluate product, ion exchange can now compete successfully with solvent extraction for treatment of uranium ores. The low concentration of U308 obtained in the CCIX strong eluate is generally upgraded by solvent extraction methods in sulfuric acid systems. Resin loadings of up to 120 grams per liter of U308, however, have been produced experimentally by recycling of eluate (HIM-IX process) and further developments may be expected in the near future. New developments in resin technology are bringing forth products of greater strength, loading capacity, selectivity and density. Densities up, to 1.35 spgr have been claimed by some suppliers. The process is not a new one and has taken years to advance to the present state of development. The earliest system to gain widespread acceptance was the resin-in-pulp system applied to uranium recovery. Ion exchange, however, later lost acceptance in favor of solvent extraction in the 1960's due to problems in resin degradation, resin contamination and resin-pulp separation, in addition to the development of improved solvent extraction reagents and techniques. The resin-in-pulp system continues to have application on high clay ores and has advanced in design. A number of other continuous ion exchange systems were also tried but never gained continued acceptance. In the current resurgence period the CCIX systems to gain acceptance were the Utah and Chem-Sep (Higgins Loop) systems. These processes are relatively simple in concept although require sophisticated controls. Fixed bed columns have also been designed into multistage systems in countercurrent operation but are not discussed in this paper. These systems remain competitive today for many applications. The most recent advancements however have been in the multistage contactors from,, which three are in current acceptance. These are the Himsley, Porter, and NIM systems. All industrial applications of these systems are relatively new, although pilot plant and in-plant development has been in progress over the last decade. Fur36ther developments should be expected in the near future.

This study summarizes the ventilation requirements for a highly mechanized P.T.Freeport Indonesia's underground mine operation in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a copper-gold deposit being developed underneath the current Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) mine. One of company's current plans is to prepare this mine for a steady oreflow of 25,000 tpd by year 2003. This study includes the estimation of airflow requirements for various mining activities, the design of major intakes and returns, the determination of airway resistances and specifications of fan duties. It also includes the results of air pressure/quantity measurements in existing airways and the standards stated by the current Indonesian mining law.

The effect of particle size on coal dewatering has been well recognized However, there are no systematic studies on ultrafine coal dewatering. The results discussed last year revealed the effect of flocculant type and coal wettability on the filtration of ultrafine coal In this paper, the differences in dewatering between -25 µ m ultrafine and -500 µ m fine coal with addition of flocculants, surfactants and oil-emulsions in vacuum filtration are further investigated Significant differences were observed in the reduction of the cake moisture. The utilized emulsions were found to be very powerful and promising filtration aids for both ultrafine and fine fractions of hydrophobic and hydrophilic coal

Jurist, educator and historian Neil Reynolds will be the keynote speaker at the National Mining Hall of Fame's 11th annual induction banquet on Sunday, Oct. 11,1998 at the Pointe Hilton Resort in Phoenix, AZ. Reynolds is Municipal Court Judge for the City of Leadville, CO, home of the National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum, and a fifth-generation resident of the community. His family staked mining claims on nearby Mount Massive in 1862. Judge Reynolds is a fulltime faculty member at Colorado Mountain College, Chairman of the Lake County Historic Preservation Advisory Board and practices law in Leadville. In announcing the speaker, Board Chairman Richard Moolick said seven inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame will join 138 mining greats previously honored in the annual ceremonies. This year's inductees will be enshrined by Thomas Falkie, president and chief executive officer of Berwind Natural Resources of Philadelphia, PA. Moolick also announced that Jeffrey Clevenger will be the master of ceremonies for the induction banquet. Clevenger is executive vice president of Cyprus Amax Minerals, Englewood, CO and president of Cyprus Climax Metals, Tempe, AZ. From a gathering storm of climate change based legislation that could potentially overwhelm the mining industry, to the nuts and bolts of mineral processing and just about everything in between, about 100 mining and mineral processing professionals heard it at all at the 60th annual Colorado MPD Meeting April 22-24 at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, CO. With a sweeping agenda under the banner ?What in the world is new in mining and metallurgy? attendees were treated to four sessions and 21 presentations that covered the range of mining industry issues. Bill Reid, president, chief executive officer and director of Gold Resources Corp., spoke about his company?s El Aquila gold project in Mexico. With five projects in Mexico, Gold Resources Corps. is aiming to become a low-cost gold and silver producer. Its flagship property, the El Aguila gold project, is a high-grade gold and silver property with significant base metal credits of copper, lead and zinc. Production of the El Aguila project was targeted for mid-2009. Reid said that three high-grade deposits have been discovered at the El Aguila project. They include the high-grade ?manto? style El Aguila openpit deposit, the El Aire high-grade polyme-tallic vein system, which is underground, and the underground La Arista high-grade polymetallic vein system. The project is located 120 km (75 miles) south-east of the capital city of Oaxaca, Mexico. Reid said the property has yielded several exceptional gold and silver surface samples, including a 36-g/t (1.1 oz/st) gold sample and a 3,100-g/t (90 oz/st) silver sample. "Keep calm and carry on mining. That has long been the conventional wisdom in the mining industry, a largely cyclical one that has weathered roller-coaster booms and busts. But in the years from 2002 to 2016, an unprecedented steep rise in commodities prices that lasted a decade and then took a sharp turn downward had made it hard for gold and silver miners to stay the course.“The last 15 years highlighted some of the structural and inherent challenges that our industry has, from product price uncertainty to long lead times to the capital intensity of our business,” said Mitchell Krebs, president and chief executive officer of Coeur Mining, who was the luncheon speaker at the American Exploration & Mining Association’s 122nd Annual Meeting held Dec. 5-9, 2016, in Reno, NV.Looking back, Krebs said, “We were given this enormous gift of a commodities super cycle, and the industry kind of blew the opportunity.” While gold prices rose 319 percent and silver prices rose more than 200 percent over the 2002 to 2016 period, the XAU index of 30 gold and silver mining companies’ stock prices went up by only 20 percent.Entering 2016, precious-metals prices have made a comeback, with gold rallying strongly from a six-year low at the start of the year. This time, the industry is ready. Companies are leaner and meaner, with lower costs, reduced debt and an increased focus on higher grades and quality ounces. Although opportunities were missed in the past, the industry has got its act together and is now well positioned to take advantage of a price upswing and even to show profits when prices fall, as they did in August 2016, pushed down by a strong dollar."
