Innovative mining technology came to Texas in the form of bucket wheel excavator/cross-pit spreader systems. Texas Utilities Mining Company put the first system to work at its Big Brown Mine in December 1985. The second such system was put into operation at the Monticello Mine in February 1991. The cross-pit spreader systems are mobile, electrically powered, excavation and conveyor systems, the principal components of which include bucket wheel excavators (BVE) and an across-the-pit conveyor (spreader). These crawler mounted machines operate as a unit; the BVE's excavate overburden, feed it via conveyors to the spreader which in turn conveys the material across the open pit and onto the developing spoil bank. The system at the Big Brown Mine is composed of 2 BVE's and an across-the-pit conveyor while the Monticello system is made up of 1 BVE and a spreader. The BVE's prestrip overburden preparing a dragline bench for the final removal of overburden. Numerous evaluations, including lignite production requirements, economics, overburden characteristics, rehandle reduction, spoil stability, and the compatibility with dragline operations, led to the selection of the cross-pit spreader system at the Big Brown Mine. The system has proven itself as a viable and economical means of prestripping. The system's success at the Big Brown Mine led to the development of a second such system at Monticello. The advent of the cross-pit spreader system is viewed by Texas Utilities Mining Company as a viable solution to recovering deeper lignite reserves in a safe and economical manner.

The effects of additives, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium oleate, oleic acid and polyacrylic acid, on stirred media milling of limestone have been investigated. The results are evaluated in terms of specific surface area, specific energy and energy efficiency as a function of additive dosage, polymer molecular weight, solids concentration and relevant operating variables. Use of additives generally results in changes in specific surface area and energy efficiency, while under certain conditions a more than 100% increase in these parameters can occur. Relevant interfacial properties have been measured and milling mechanisms involved are explored particularly in terms of the effect of additives on the flow patterns at higher solids concentration.

In a previous paper presented at the 1966 Annual Meeting of AIME we reported our work, conducted at the Pennsylvania State University, on the hydrocyclone washing of fine coal.' The initial evaluation based on that work demonstrated the feasibility of hydrocyclones as fine-coal cleaning devices, and in that previous paper we presented selected test data that showed in principle how product yield and assay respond to variations of the major cyclone operating variables. The present paper reports in greater detail on the findings and presents a comprehensive evaluation of our data as follows: ? Hydrocyclone throughput rates were related to feed pressure and other variables by regression equations. These equations are compared with other capacity- versus-pressure drop expressions taken from the literature on classification cyclones.

Groundwater flow in bedrock units is an important factor to be considered for most mining situations, both underground and open pit excavations. Characterization of the hydrogeologic system into which a mine will advance is an important factor for slope and entry stability, mine dewatering design, and potential environmental considerations including stream loss and water well damage. In addition, hydrogeologic characterization of bedrock is important for locating water wells and for groundwater contamination mitigation. Hydrogeologic characterization for a site begins with a desktop study and often evolves to include drilling, geologic logging, monitoring well installation, groundwater sampling, pump testing, and packer (Lugeon) testing. In addition to these methods of hydrogeologic data collection, downhole geophysical logging of exploration and monitoring well boreholes provides detailed information associated specifically with in-situ conditions of each hole. The basic suite of geophysical logging tools used for hydrogeologic characterization often includes Optical or Acoustic Televiewer (O/ATV), full wave sonic, gamma-density, fluid temperature, resistivity, specific conductance, and flowmeter. For many hydrogeologic settings, groundwater flow in the bedrock is dominated by discontinuities, or fractures, in the rock. O/ATV logging allows for determination of the frequency (clustering), orientation, and aperture width of in-situ fractures, while sonic logging allows for estimation of intact rock strength. Fluid temperature logging and flowmeter measurements provide insight with regard to potential groundwater inflow zones, and other tools provide information for geologic unit contacts. This paper outlines the process and benefits of using downhole geophysical logging for hydrogeologic characterization and provides generalized examples from industry experience.

One of the major improvements in ore grinding economics in North America has been the introduction of autogenous grinding. The history of this has been well documented in previous AIME presentations and in the literature. Pickands Mather & Co. has been very active in the development of autogenous grinding since 1957. This early work led to the application of autogenous grinding to the Wabush Mines ore in 1965, with the installation of 6-24 ft. diameter by 8 ft. long - 1,750 HP mills. Development work recently completed in 1971 on another ore has led to the decision to install 5-36 ft. diameter by 15 ft. long - 12,000 HP mills when this project goes ahead. Between these two decisions lies a tremendous amount of research, development, and application of autogenous grinding to a variety of ores. The Pickands Mather Metallurgical and Research Laboratory in Hibbing, Minnesota has tested, in its pilot plant facility, ores from 9 different deposits. Some of these deposits have as much difference within their own ore types as there is between the various deposits. Therefore, it is safe to say that over 20 different ore types have been tested and flowsheets developed for commercial applications. Of the 9 projects, 3 are in operation. These are Wabush Mines in Labrador, Canada, (1) Savage River Mines in Tasmania, (2) and The Griffith Mine in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada. (3) Pilot plant work has encompassed over 300 individual tests. These tests were carried out in mills that were 5-1/2, 8, and 12 ft. in diameter. Grinding power requirements for the primary autogenous milling has varied from 2 to 30 KWH/Lt of crude ore.

The Plant. The annual production of the Pyhasalmi mine is 900 000 tons of copper- zinc-pyrite ore containing approximately 0.7 % Cu, 2.5 % Zn and 30 % S. During 1976...1981 altered surface ore, 850 000 tons in all, was also treated at the concentrator. The surface ore was crushed and ground in a separate plant and was then fed into the copper or zinc flotation or was flotated in its own circuit, depending on the degree of alteration and the content of copper and zinc in the ore. The surface ore was exhausted in October 1981. Flotation comprises three consecutive flotation circuits; copper, zinc and pyrite circuit. The zinc circuit includes an open circuit roughing and scavenging. The scavenger concentrate and cleaner tailing are pumped to the middlings flotation. Rougher concentrates of the open circuit and the middlings flotation are pumped to cleaning which includes four stages. Figure 1 describes the flowsheet of the zinc circuit.

Glass is one of man's most versatile creations. ---The earliest glaze known---is about 12,000 B.C. ---The oldest pure glass is a moulded amulet of about 7,000 B.C.---. Indicative of a knowledge of properly-proportioned, quality raw-material, means were found for producing the first relatively clear, transparent glass at about the beginning of the Christian era. The fundamentals of almost all the modern, technical processes of manufacture were established during the 3rd Century. (1) Glassmaking, practiced in Colonial America, was moved toward the Ohio Valley in response to increasing demands for fuel. This move, beginning in the 1860's resulted in the use of the glass sands contained in the Oriskany (and St. Peter) sandstone. (2) Glass sand,(3) virtually pure, fine-to-medium-grained quartz sand(4) is the principal raw material used in the manufacture of glass; it constitutes proportions which range to a maximum of about 72% and seldom is glass made without it. However, acceptable glass sands are, invariably, those which most nearly fit the glass-producer's economic needs and any method used to evaluate a raw material's potential must finally prove equatable with such needs. As used in the United States, source-rocks of glass sand include sandstone, unconsolidated silica sands, quartzites and vein-quartz. Admixtures of silica sand and other (principally clay and feldspar), readily separable components have been proven viable. However, the silica sand, refined by nature to a high degree of purity, is the desirable product of exploration. If the term, standard, is justified by long-continued use, the Oriskany - and St. Peter sandstones are, together, the nonesuch of the glass sand industry they provide the principal tonnage of melting sand. According to Grimsley,(5) Ottawa, Illinois, glass-sand is considered the standard glass-sand of the West and the analyses of Berkeley Springs sand (Oriskany) compare most favorably with this sand.

The distribution of material passing a screen, or a set of screens, is described by the equation [ ] where p = the probability that a single particle will pass the screen on a single presentation k = number of layers of screen cloth n = distance from head of screen expressed as number of screen openings. This model can be used to predict the performance of conventional screening operations (i.e., k = 1) as well as the so-called "statistical screening" operations. Using this technique, in which multiple identical layers of screen cloth are employed, screening can be carried out at a finer size than is possible with conventional techniques with no loss of separation efficiency.

"A direct route for the reduction of magnesium oxide to magnesium using thermal plasma processing, with methane as the reducing gas, has been systematically evaluated. A feasibility study of the reduction reaction has been performed on the MgO-CH4 system at different methane concentrations and temperatures. The effects of changes in the key process parameters, such as the oxide-to-methane ratio and plasma power, on the yield of magnesium have been systematically evaluated. A maximum yield of about 61 mol% Mg was obtained using power of 20.0 kW and a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1. Phase, morphological, elemental and binding energy analyses were performed on the product powders to understand the reduction reaction. Surface oxidation was observed in smaller magnesium particles in all the experiments, while the in-situ sintering of magnesium rods was observed at a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1.5. Magnesium carbide (Mg2C3) was observed in the product, and its mechanism of formation is proposed using phase equilibrium data and a predominance diagram.IntroductionMagnesium has an excellent combination of low density and high strength. These properties have increased worldwide demand for and use of magnesium. Two major processes are used in the commercial synthesis of magnesium metal. The first method is electrolytic reduction and the second is thermal reduction using Pidgeon process. These processes can be classified as traditional techniques, but there are numerous emerging technologies that aim at reducing the production cost of Mg, its environmental impact and energy consumption. Thermal plasma processing is one emerging technique that has great potential in all the abovementioned key areas of magnesium production.Traditional reduction techniques. Two major reduction techniques, namely electrolytic and thermal reduction, have been used in the commercial production of magnesium. INTRODUCTION During the last decade, several studies in France (e.g., Perraud et al. , 1970; Chameaud et al., 1974, 1979 and 1980) and the United States (e.g., Stuart et al., 1978; Cross et al., 1978, 1980 and 1981) have demonstrated the systematic production of emphysema, fibrosis and tumors in the lungs of animals exposed to radon daughters alone or to mixtures of uranium-mine air contaminants. The studies in beagle dogs have been particularly interesting because of the uncertain etiology of the disease and the (apparently) diverse results of the studies at the University of Rochester and the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL). In the Rochester studies, reported by Morken (1973), beagle dogs were exposed to "normal" room air dust loads and radon daughters from 200 to 10,000 WLM*, delivered in 1 to 50 days (rate of delivery, about 200 WLM per day of exposure). Histological examination of tissues was conducted at 1, 2 and 3 years after exposure for all exposure levels. No cancers were noted in these dogs that received estimated alveolar doses of 34 to 1700 rad (0.34 to 17 Gy). Pathologic changes were found only in the alveolar and bronchiolar regions of the lung. These changes were small, subtle, variable, and widely separated, involving only a very small fraction of lung tissue. Lesions appeared as focal thickening of alveolar septa, with some metaplasia of alveolar cells and some hyperplasia of bronchial epithelium. In the PNL experiments reported by Cross et al. (1978), beagle dogs were exposed in lifespan studies to mixtures of radon daughters (rate of delivery, about 14 WLM per day of exposure), uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. One group of dogs was exposed to cigarette smoke alone. Except in control and smoke-only groups, the dogs died within 4' years of the first radon daughter exposure, or were killed when death appeared imminent because of pulmonary insufficiency (characterized by rapid, shallow breathing). Control and smoke-only animals were killed at periods corresponding to highmortality periods in the groups exposed to radon daughters and mixtures of uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. Emphysema and fibrosis were much more prevalent and severe in the lungs of dogs exposed to the mixtures. These dogs also had adenomatous lesions, which progressed to squamous metaplasia of alveolar epithelium, epidermoid carcinoma and bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. Pathologic changes in the upper airways of these dogs were most prominent in the nasal mucosa, and included a few squamous carcinomas in the nasal cavity. Respiratory tract neoplasia was noted after ~4 years exposure and at cumulative exposures exceeding approximately 12,000 WLM. Apart from differences in associated carrier aerosol (room air dust vs. uranium ore dust) and radon-daughter exposure rate (200 WLM/day, shortduration exposure vs. 14 WLM/day, long-duration exposure), the most obvious difference in the Rochester and PNL studies was the observation time following exposure (3 years maximum vs. >4 years). Although neoplasia may not have been observed in the Rochester animals because of the earlier termination of the experiments, it is surprising that other lesions, such as prominent fibrosis and emphysema, were not reported. A follow-up study (reported here) is currently in progress at PNL to determine the pathogenic role of uranium ore dust alone and, in particular, to clarify the role of the ore dust in the production of the massive pulmonary fibrosis observed in the earlier study. Pulmonary function testing (a recently acquired capability) was included in the follow-up study as an indicator of progressive change in lung tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS Chronic (4 hr/day, 5 days/week) exposures began when the dogs were about 2 1/2 years old. Two identical exposure chambers provided space for simultaneous, head-only exposure of 24 dogs to ~l5 mg/m3 carnotite uranium ore dust. An aerosol diffusion system was incorporated in each chamber in order to channel fresh aerosol past each dog's head; uranium ore dust was added to the inlet room air with Wright Dust Feed Mechanisms* (WDFM). Uranium ore dust and condensation nuclei concentrations were measured daily; chamber aerosols were monitored occasionally for particle-size distributions as described for previous hamster experiments (Cross et al., 1981). In 1992, United States mine production of barite decreased 8.5%. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 36.9% and imports decreased by 61.6% vs. 1991. World mine production decreased 1.5%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, decreased 11.9% according to the Bureau. The declared value, c.i.f. United States port, of all imported crude barite during 1992 decreased from $42.35/t ($38.42/st) in 1991 to $40.09/t ($36.37/st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 88% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 80% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Ten¬nessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This included barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1992. The average number of rotary rigs operating (717) was 16.6% less than the 1991 average of 860 in the United States. Crude barite imports were 518 kt (571,000 st), 61.6% less than in 1991. Imports accounted for 44.7% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the United States. During the year, China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the United States with 67.2% of total crude ore imports. India followed with 31 %, and others with 1.8%. The Alligator Ridge Mine is located 70 miles northwest of Ely in White Pine County, Nevada. Development of the mine began in the late 1970's as a joint venture between Amselco Minerals, Inc. and Occidental Minerals Corporation, with Amselco as the operating partner. Early in 1983 Nerco Minerals Company acquired Occidental's share of the property. The mine and ore processing facility have operated at capacity since 1981 producing 680,000 tonnes of ore and 1,900 kg of gold per year. The gold ore deposits at Alligator Ridge consist of disseminated micron-size gold particles in a silicified siltstone matrix. The deposit comprises three separate but adjacent areas of mineralization that are designated as Vantage 1, Vantage 2, and Vantage 3 after the name of the basin in which the deposits lie.

The advantages of recirculation of air in underground mines have been well recognized, and several papers have been written on the subject. Issues of concern to the various segments of the mining industry relate to the health and safety of workers, specifically, methane and respirable dust build-up in the air, high humidity and temperature at the work face. This paper presents a survey of various studies pertaining to recirculation as a prelude to the experimental and quantitative studies performed by the authors. Experiments were performed at a trona mine on the transportation and deposition of dust along the return airways, for three different velocities. Modeling studies were performed using dust deposition models. The model predicted data were compared with experimental data in order to lay the foundation for the development of advanced predictor models for recirculation in trona mines. Two models for dust deposition were analyzed. The model predicted data are in divergence from the experimental data, indicating the need to develop better models.

Rockbursts and rockfalls cause very large safety and productivity losses in underground mines. One of the major unsolved problems of safe, economical rock support in underground mining has been that of maintaining anchorage during dynamic rock loading conditions or seismic related occurrences. It is recognized that the large displacements and high strain rates in excavation walls and underground structures cannot be countered by increasing the strength of stiff rock-reinforcing systems but must be accommodated by introducing yieldability into the support elements. This paper introduces a low cost yieldable support system which provides viable solutions to dynamic support loading. Such system should not only provide a feasible and more effective rock mass stabilization strategy but improve mine safety and reduce losses.

Northwest Boring, Inc. (NWB) deployed a skinned up AVN 2000AB Microtunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) to install 7.5-foot long, 118-inch outer diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) sections along an alignment between the Fremont (FRS) jacking shaft and the 3rd Avenue (3RS) receiving shaft for the Ship Canal Water Quality SCWQ Project. The alignment includes: a 67-foot long straight section, a 367-foot long curved section excavated along a 650-foot radius curve, followed by a 182-foot long straight section. This paper describes the project including planning and design, manufacturing, equipment installation in the 90-foot-deep FRS jacking shaft, egress through the secants and microtunnel operations required to complete the shaft and install the required casing pipes.

The last twenty years of development in Process Mineralogy are reviewed. Since the milestone review by Henley in 1983, which projected the concept and suggested closer working relations between mineral processing and mineral science, the second generation (1983-2003) has made significant progress. Examples are to be found in improved sampling and high-confidence flotation testing, and in automated quantitative mineral measurement. The recent addition of end-member studies has provided a clearer view of the overall ore mixture milled from its constituent geological components. In all, better predictive abilities have resulted from these improvements to Process Mineralogy. These improvements have led to more significant business impacts in mineral resource characterization, and in optimization of existing concentrator operations.

The electrokinetic and flotation behavior of the green alga Chlorella vulgaris was studied in the absence and presence of Pb(II), Al (III) and flotation collectors. It was found that the presence of Al (III) is necessary for good flotation of the organism whether or not Pb(II) is present when dodecylammonium chloride or sodium dodecylsulfate is used as collector. Best flotation using dodecylamine is at about pH 8 and best flotation when using sodium dodecylsulfate is at about pH 4. It appears because of the small size of the organisms that the Al (III) is necessary for flocculation to enhance bubble-cell contact and C. vulgaris removal from water. When N-dodecyl-2-aminoproprionic acid is used as collector good flotation occurs at about pH 4 without the addition of Al (III).

Four types of slope failures in waste dumps are recognized; debris flow, foundation failure, edge slump and blowout. The first three types, although at times causing considerable damage to property and interfering with mine operations, are not usually dangerous to personnel because of their slow rate of movement. The fourth type, the blowout, is considered to be the most dangerous because of its explosive mode of failure and lack of forewarning. The December failure at Verona dump is presented as an example of a blowout. Data from piezometer holes indicate that the blowout was due to perched leach solutions near the face of the dump. The level of water in this zone is very closely related to the rate of leach water application on the dump. A detailed analysis of core samples indicated that the impounded water was due to a zonal accumulation of Jarosite which is associated with a buried dump surface. Drain holes proved successful in controlling perched leach solutions in the critical zone near the face of the dump. Monitoring of the water level in the perched zone is considered essential in preventing blowouts. The use of drain and piezometer holes has allowed an increase in the rate of water application on the dump while preventing additional failure.

This review is based on a questionnaire sent out to 24 Canadian exploration companies, known to be active in the mineral exploration field, concerning their practice in the use of applied geochemical techniques in Precambrian terrains. Of the companies questioned, 16 returned completed questionnaires and of these, ten companies stated that they had some experience in this type of work. Of the companies who did not answer or return the questionnaire in time I know that at least three have been quite heavily engaged in applied geochemical work in the glaciated Precambrian areas. I also know that these three companies have been reasonably successful in their ventures, so I feel the following figures and opinions are, if anything, on the pessimistic side. Before continuing with the paper I would like to express my personal thanks to the Chief Geologists, Geologists and Exploration Managers of the various companies who cooperated in making this review possible by answering the questionnaires and making available summaries of their work in the glaciated terrains. Of the companies who stated that they had no experience in geochemical prospecting in glaciated Precambrian areas it is interesting to note that only two have reported that they do not use applied geochemistry at all. Two companies have reported that they make use of applied geochemistry in New Brunswick in areas of-light glaciation. Their opinion is that it is a useful aid to other techniques in evaluating mineralized areas.
