As far back as 1939 state laws have required reclamation of mined lands. Reclamation has been the topic of many discussions and presentations, especially since the late 1960's. In the past ten years many states have added legislation concerning the reclamation of coal-mined lands. In the near future, it seems certain that some federal regulations will be passed that will set minimum guidelines for the states to regulate. Besides the requirement of returning the land to the approximate original contour, future regulations will more than likely demand replacing topsoil from one to five feet thick. As regulations become more stringent, costs will rise accordingly. Since no one has developed a machine that can do all reclamation work by itself, it is necessary to review in detail the tools available and to select the most economical means.

The generalized rail haulage simulator described in this paper is an outgrowth of the need to expand a previously developed single level simulator to permit analysis of production problems where intermediate car storage is used. Many of the ideas of the former single level simulator, which is an integral part of an Underground Generalized Materials Handling Simulator (UGMHS), have been used in model development. In addition, experience gained in applying the earlier model to a variety of operating conditions has been heavily relied on. The generalized rail haulage simulation model can operate as an independent system and, as such, can be used to analyze rail haulage systems using production distributions as data input. In addition, this model is designed to replace the present rail haulage sub-assembly in the UGMHS model and the linking procedure has been integrated into the model. The flow of coal from production sections in UGMHS, for example, fill the mine cars and a condition of no empty cars at a loading station will shut down in by production systems.

The phosphate mining industry is a highly competitive one, one in which survival depends on the plant's ability to produce at costs equal to, or below, the competition. The solution toward getting costs down is usually one of scaling up the plants to get the most tons through at the lowest possible cost. Control of these plants has been an art. Few of them are well instrumented because until a few years ago reliable instrumentation was non-existent. International Minerals and Chemical Corporation was a pioneer in applying computer techniques to ore reserves analysis and mine planning and the success in these areas led to the question of whether we could not extend the advantages of computer processing into the plant itself. There was a great deal of doubt on the operator's end that this could be done successfully because of the lack of instrumentation and the fact that plant control was largely an art that was learned only after many years of experience. However, in 1965 the instrumentation picture began to look up and the new generation of process computers just coming on the market were considerably lower in cost than the previous ones. A preliminary study of the installation costs and the probable benefits that could be realized from computer control convinced us that a process control computer should be seriously considered for a new phosphate mining plant which was being designed.

Potassic alteration domains of greenstone belt lode gold deposits are characterized by systematic partitioning between different groups of incompatible elements, such that Al, Ga, Th, U, Ti and V are decoupled from K, Rb, Ba, Cs and Tl. The former group of elements have concentrations and interelement ratios in alteration domains which reflect host rock control, implying approximately isochemical behaviour. In contrast, K, Rb, and Ba are strongly coenriched, and linearly correlated over th4ee orders of magnitude in abundance, where K/Rb = 260, and K/Ba = 40: K/Cs (-10 ) and K/T1 (-2x10 ) are also correlated, though more weakly. Lithium abundances, and Rb/Sr ratios are erratic in altered rocks. These interelement trends, collectively, are present in deposits variously hosted by ultramafic, mafic, or felsic volcanic rocks, and sediments or granitoids.

Pyrometallurgical products from lime roasting of refractory gold ores, pyrite, and arsenopyrite have been examined for their mineralogy, porosity, permeability, retention of contaminant sulfur and arsenic, and potential effectiveness of gold extraction. Cathodoluminescence microscopy, supplemented by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive analysis study, has shown that the products phases have characteristic cathodoluminescence properties as follows: anhydrite (CaS04), deep blue; unreacted portlandite (Ca(OH)2), deep purple; oldhamite (CaS), light yellow to rarely pink or orange; a sulfur-rich, arsenic-poor phase, violet; an arsenic-rich, sulfur-poor phase, non-CL. Within the temperature range examined (400-850°C), hematite exhibits greater porosity and permeability at the intermediate roast temperatures of 600-650°C.

The leaching kinetics of chalcopyrite in ammonium iodide solutions with iodine has been studied using rotating disc. The variables studied J include the concentrations of lixiviants, rotation speed, pH of the solution, reaction temperature, and reaction product layer. The leaching rate was found to be independent with the disc rotating speed. The apparent activation energy was measured to be about 50 kJ/mole from 15°C to 35°C, and 30.3 kJ/mole from 35°C to 60°C. The San Luis deposit of Costilla county, Colorado contained 11,021,000 tonnes (12,149,000 tons) of ore at 1.4 g/t (0.040 oz/st) gold in two minable zones. Gold mineralization is associated with silicification and quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration localized in breccias along a low-angle detachment fault zone in Precambrian gneiss. Gangue minerals include chlorite, specular hematite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and fluorite. Mineralization is mid-Tertiary in age and has a direct genetic relation to the emplacement of felsic intrusions. Portions of the ore body are unconformably overlain by sedimentary rocks of the Tertiary Santa Fe Formation. The deposit formed during the early stages of extensional tectonism along the eastern edge of the present day Rio Grande rift.

The somewhat misnomered "continuous" face section is in most mines today still far from perfect continuity. Achieving uninterrupted flow of coal from the mining machine to the outside has been a long sought for goal. Clearly, the largest problem to be solved in continuous mining today is one of increasing the cutting time of the miner. Full machine utilization can never be achieved with the new high capacity miners, as long as their performance is tied to that of the shuttle car. Figure No. I illustrates the point at which shuttle car haulage distance determines unit productivity rather than the productive capacity of the miner. Continuous mining is never realized. A recent development has proven, however, that truly continuous mining and haulage is possible. The Bell & Zoller Coal Company working with the Research and Development Department of Hewitt-Robins Inc. developed and perfected a new mining system which offers advantages in terms of increased productivity at reduced mining costs and enhances the safety of personnel at the face. This new system involves the use of two pieces of equipment that form a unbroken link, at all times, between the mining machine and the mine belt haulage system. These pieces are a Mobile Bridge Conveyor, and an extensible panel conveyor. The following areas of discussion will be covered during the review of this development. I. INTRODUCTION The past few years has seen an increased interest in the determination of statistically valid properties of a rock mass. The increased use of computer modelling for the study of rock excavation behaviour has created a need for upper and lower statistical bounds for the properties of a rock mass being modelled. Obviously, to determine the statistical properties of a large volume of rock, many samples must be tested - an expensive proposition when using conventional testing facilities and procedures. As a result of high costs per sample, sufficient tests for statistically valid results are rarely done. In an effort to reduce both sample preparation and test facility costs, an instrument called the Bemek Advanced Rock Tester (BRT) was developed in Sweden. With a total weight of approx. 35 kg, the BRT is portable and sells at a small fraction of the cost of a conventional testing machine. It is comprised of a small 65 KN loading frame with attachments for a variety of tests (see Table 1) , a hand operated hydraulic pump, an electronic balancing unit and a programmable microprocessor. The microprocessor is capable of storing data, performing arithmetic operation on, and printing signals from, a transducer and two strain gauges. A detailed description of the apparatus is given by G. Swan et al. (1). The proposed test strategy involves first a 3-point flexure test on a notched core specimen, followed by a 4-point flexure test on the separated specimen halves. Finally, point load and Brazilian tests can be carried out on the quarter parts of the original specimen. Thus specimen preparation is kept to a minimum. These and other perceived advantages have prompted the purchase of this machine and an evaluation of its suitability to provide data on mechanical properties of intact rock for numerical modelling and rock mechanics design at Noranda's underground mines. Details of its performance evaluation and experiences with the unit are discussed in the following sections. [ ] INITIAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE During the commissioning stage the BRT had, or developed, a series of problems, some of which seriously affected its operation. Below are some examples. Poor documentation was the most serious problem encountered. Confusing instructions for the 4-point bend test installation and its microprocessor programing, as well as poor and ambiguous information on the calculation of gauge factors, are some of the difficulties which had to be overcome. Meehan~cal problems occurred, including failure of the hydraulic pump, as well as electronic difficulties with the microprocessor. Other problems with the printer, requiring its replaceqent, were fortunately covered under warranty.

While we are all aware of the need for reclamation of mine sites, few managers and engineers seem to be aware that good reclamation begins with the earliest plans for mining and processing of ores. Far too often the attitude that reclamation is an add-on to worry about at the end of the mining process dominates the thinking of mine engineers and management, A common result is that the reclamationist can be faced with mining and waste disposal designs that are nearly impossible to deal with effectively from an ecological perspective. Everyone of us has been victimized by the down time and maintainence cost that resulted from the purchase of an outwardly attractive, but poorly designed piece of equipment. When confronted by design defects in equipment, a distraught owner can always trade it in, call a consumer advocate, or follow up one of the "lemon laws" at either the federal or state level. A poorly designed mine for reclamation purposes usually cannot be treated either with ease or cost effectiveness. Good reclamation can be effectively prevented by the designs used when the mine was planned. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the experiences our firm has had with reclamation projects at mines in the Upper Midwest as these were influenced or controlled by mine design decisions. My aim is to sensitize mine planners and managers to planning processes they should consider, and hopefully use, early in the mining process to assure successful reclamation during and after mining. Many of the examples I will cite are from experience gained at the recently closed Jackson County Iron Company taconite operation at Black River Falls, Wisconsin. I am particularly grateful to Mr. Vern Metzger, mine manager at JCIC, for his unflagging support of good reclamation practices, employee training programs (which have included reclamation techniques), and his forebearance to put up with our group of ecologists. I realize that this was a time when there were significant internal and external pressures to cut all costs including reclamation efforts. The collaboration has been successful as you will soon see.

"INTRODUCTIONDouble Shield TBMs were introduced in the market in the early seventies with three main targets:• Increase the TBM performances in term of advance per day thanks to the ability to erect a segmental lining simultaneously with the excavation phase.• Be able to advance through unstable and disturbed rocks under the protection of the shields• Provide a finished tunnel by installing a precast lining as the TBM advance.In 2003 SELI developed the design of the Double Shield Universal (DSU) TBM as an evolution of the original Double Shield TBM design.This new TBM design was targeted to improve: the TBM capability to advance through squeezing/converging rock formations under high cover, the telescopic joint design (allowing by such to operate the machine in double shield mode in very weak rock), the capability of the TBM to investigate and treat the ground around and ahead of the tunnel face.In the same lapse of time Single Shield TBMs, originally utilized for soft ground tunnelling, extended progressively their range of application to mix rocks and finally to hard rock tunnelling with increasing performances.This also thanks to the substantial reduction in the installation time of the segmental lining ring that contributed to minimize the TBM stand by time between two consecutive boring strokes.Today the choice between the two types of TBMs needs to be carefully evaluated project by project since one type of TBM may “prevail” in certain geologies and diameters and vice versa.THE VISHNUGAD PIPALKOTI TUNNELThe Vishnugad Pipalkoti Tunnel is part of the 444 MW Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (VPHEP) on Alaknanda river in Uttarakhand (India).The Owner is the Indian electric company “Tehry Hydro Development Corporation” (THDC) and the World Bank finances the project.The Headrace Tunnel total length is 13.4 Km and a section of about 12,3km will be excavated by TBM by SELI Overseas (Italy) in subcontract to HCC (India) the General Contractor for the project. The TBM will be delivered ex workshop in March 2016 and it is foreseen to start boring in the second half of 2016.Figure 1 below shows the location of the project and the following Table 1 summarizes the geometrical characteristics of the TBM tunnel."

Laboratory settling and filtration testing was conducted on wet processed fly ash in order to determine the applicability of conventional dewatering techniques to reduce the moisture content prior to drying. Settling tests showed that acceptable clarity (<1.5 g/l suspended solids) could be achieved after as little as 6 minutes of settling. After settling to a consistency of 40 weight % solids, continuous laboratory vacuum filtration testing produced a cake containing below 20% moisture with throughput exceeding 150 lb/ft2/hr.

Dawsonite bearing oil shale of Colorado&apos;s Green River Formation offers a unique and vast (6.5 billion tons of Al2O3) resource of easily extractable alumina. The processing methods required by the thermal reactions dawsonite and its oil shale carrier also require production of shale oil, soda ash, and nahcolite as marketable coproducts. These production methods are presented. The alumina production process is contrasted with the Bayer process to describe technical advantages of extraction of alumina from oil shale which may offset the problems associated with processing a relatively lean ore. While alumina production from oil shale requires development of new technology, the technical problems appear solvable. Only the political problems arising from the now onerous and completely unnecessary Federal oil-shale withdrawal appear less solvable.

Lake Dufault Mines, Limited, is located ten miles north of Noranda, Quebec. Following discovery of a copper-zinc orebody late in 1961, metallurgical investigations of diamond drill core were conducted by Lakefield Research Limited during 1962 and 1963. These were followed by pilot-plant tests in May and June of 1964, utilizing underground development ore. Milling operations commenced on August 16, 1964, and reached rated capacity of 1,300 tons per day by October 1, 1964 (Figure 1). Since that time, tonnage was gradually increased to a maximum of 1,400 tons per day and since January 1, 1968, gradually decreased to the present rate of 1,100 tons per day due to an increase in the hardness of the ore. The ore milled from start-up until January, 1968, was mainly massive sulphides, consisting of a complex mixture of iron, copper, zinc and minor amounts of lead sulphides with important associated values in gold, silver and cadmium (aver- age specific gravity 3.8). From January, 1968, until the present, the ore being processed is described geologically as a boxwork of sulphide stringers of chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite and some local dissemination in siliceous rhyolite (average specific gravity 2.9) supplemented by the massive copper-zinc ore. The limited size of the orebody and the mining method employed (open stoping by blasthole and slash and bench methods) would have made grade control from the mine difficult and expensive. It was decided to try to cope with grade variations in the mill. The resulting rapid and wide swings in mill heads, hardness and specific gravity have presented many and varied challenges for the mill personnel.

According to the "Survey of Energy Resources 1980" (1)*, which was prepared by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Raw Materials in Hannover (FRG)for the World Energy Conference 1980 in Munich, the world coal deposits are assessed at 775 billion tce proven reserves 448 billion tce of them recoverable and 6 161 billion tce additional resources. If one ignores growth rates, the current world coal output of 2,8 billion tpy gives our recoverable reserves a static life expectancy of 175 years. With an average increase in world output of 3,2 % like between 1973 and 1980 this range would be further shortened to an alarming degree. Furthermore, the criteria used to distinguish between workable and unworkable resources give rise to the suspicion that deposit characteristics are not always taken into account to a sufficient degree. For example, little attention is paid to major ?Bonitaet" - factors such as dip and seam thickness. There have been wide-ranging scientific discussions on the lower limit for workable coal resources, but no such limits have been set at the other end of the scale. Otherwise it is well known that performance and costs are badly affected den in level and moderately inclined seams the seam thickness is more than 4 to 5 m, because special mining methods have to be used beyond this limit. These are associated with significantly higher costs than with the winning of seams of ?normal? thickness.

In 1947, coal production in Western Canada was 10 Mt (11 million st) which predominantly came from 120 underground mines. By 1968 production was down to 1 Mt (1.1 million st). Production in 1981 was back up to 29 Mt (32 million st), but only 1.5 Mt (1.7 million st) of the total was from underground mines. In fact, because of competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines were operating in 1981-the McIntyre and B.C. Coal mines. While several other underground mines are being planned, this article will deal with only the two in production. Geology The geology in Western Canada is frequently complicated; hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitched and usually soft or well cleated. The 5000-km (3,100-mile) coal belt that runs from the Yukon to Mexico is well developed in Western Canada. It is divided into two distinct regions-the Rocky Mountain Lower Cretaceous coals and the mostly uniform level Upper Cretaceous coals of the plains area to the east. Isolated pockets of coal occur at Vancouver Island and Hat Creek. Hat Creek&apos;s massive 300-m (984-ft) thick geologically recent lignite deposit is 250 km (155 miles) inland. Geography The infrastructure of Western Canada is shown in Fig. 1 along with the locations of the two mines. Both rely on exports of premium low volatile metallurgical coal mostly to the Pacific Rim. The rail distance from both mines to port is 1100 km (684 miles)-accounting for a significant portion of the sales cost of the coal. Mining Methods Two main mining methods are used-room and pillar and hydraulic. Longwall has been attempted and is being considered again. In the past, a simple hand method used gravity to help mine most of the coal on steep pitches. Levels were driven in the seam, rising slightly to assist in draining. On the advance, mining would start at the upper level, usually from adits driven in the side of the mountain. Rooms or angles were driven up 100 m (328 ft) at a suitable angle for the coal to flow down. On retreating out of the level, the pillars would be taken, starting from the highest point, using batteries to stop coal or rock flushing down the room. Batteries consisted of three to six stout wooden posts set at an angle to resist material flow. Coal loading was directly from chutes at the bottom of raises into 1- to 2-t mine cars hauled by diesel or battery locomotives. Often output was restricted by the supply of empty cars. Mechanization began in the 1960s but was difficult in these conditions. Mines such as Canmore and Coleman continued operation into the 1970s but closed because steep seams, high methane emissions, and faulting made mining difficult. PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Mill Level Zone mine is one of the deepest block cave mines in the world and is in mountainous terrain in West Papua, Indonesia. The mineralization is hosted in a skarn deposit in a structural setting that is complex at the footprint, mine and regional scale. Large seismic events and significant episodes of rapid rock mass deformation are potentially critical geotechnical risks during this ramp-up stage of mining. Understanding the interaction between stress, strain, rock mass strength and geological structures is essential to minimize the hazard and engineer control measures to help ensure the safety of the employees while achieving production targets. This paper discusses how the seismicity and excavation damage have been shaped by the interactions between the mine and geological features, and how this affects strategic mining decisions. Additionally, the paper presents a summary of the mitigation measures used for mining the DMLZ in the safest and most productive way. These include improvements to geotechnical characterization of rock mass and structure, dynamic ground support designs, production scheduling for desirable cave propagation and a seismic monitoring system with re-entry protocols.

The exploitation of mineral deposits for economical recovery of the contained minerals has many aspects differing from other industrial or manufacturing operations. However, generally accepted principles of good organization and management applicable to industrial plants are similarly effective for mineral processing plants. A more detailed coverage of organizational structures and management techniques than is possible in this section can be obtained from many good books devoted wholly to these subjects. A few of the more readily available examples are included in the general references at the beginning of this section. The field of mineral processing encompass a wide variety of minerals, processes, flowsheets, equipment, and end products. Mineral deposits, mines, and related beneficiation plants are found in all parts of the globe, often in remote locations with no nearby support for supplies and maintenance. Available labor is frequently unskilled, sometimes primitive, and often untrained without machine and hand tools or heavy equipment experience. Such situations call for well- planned and conducted training programs covering the full range of mining-type job skills. Climates can range from arctic to tropical and from arid to extremes of rain or snow, and the mine and plant sites can be almost anywhere. However, it is often possible and sometimes necessary for

The Miami In-situ mine of BHP Copper is located in Globe-Miami, Arizona. The mine leaches mineralized leach capping over a supergene enriched sulfide deposit, and has produced over 500 million lbs of copper during the last 50 years. The Miami unit has identified several opportunities to enhance and expand in-situ production. A computer block model consisting of strict geologic controls, mineralogy, and metallurgical data was developed to assist in the determination of the leachable copper resource. An understanding of the accessibility and solubility of the resource to leaching solutions and the integration of hydrogeologic and hydrometallurgical information was necessary for completion of this project.
