To provide critical scientific data and engineering guidelines to federal and state regulatory agencies as well as the coal and gas industries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated a Gas Well Stability Research Program in 2016. This paper summarizes the critical scientific data acquisition, interpretation, and modeling by NIOSH regarding the stability of unconventional shale gas wells influenced by longwall mining. Currently, NIOSH is the only organization in the U.S. conducting such fundamental and impactoriented research, which receives input and collaborations from MSHA, PADEP, WVDMS, OHDNR, the coal industry, and the gas industry. Results from the NIOSH field instrumentation programs—which include surface, subsurface, and underground instrumentation—and the parallel three-dimensional numerical modeling programs indicate that, under shallow and medium covers, the measured horizontal displacements within the abutment pillar are one order of magnitude higher than those measured under deep cover. Casing couplers are found to play an important role in longwall-induced casing deformations. Cementing alternatives are found to have significant impact on longwall-induced casing stresses and deformations. Measured 60-arm caliper logging results are in good agreement with three-dimensional computer simulation results. Engineering guidelines on longwall-induced deformations, casing and cementing alternatives, gas well setback distances, as well as risk assessment strategy are proposed.

On the job injuries to the musculoskeletal system are probably the oldest of the industrial safety problems. Long before we had pinchpoints to guard, chemical vapors to ventilate, and noise to enclose, people were getting strains, sprains, and sore backs from their work activities. In spite of the age of the problem, it remains a long way from being solved. The past ten years have seen a significant commitment by the sci¬entific community to understanding the problem. Engineers, scientists, doctors, and epidemi¬ologists have been involved, and as a result, today we have a much better understanding of the problem. The first step in understanding a problem such as this is to explore its history and epidemiology. The research done by Chaffin (1977), Snook (1970), Ayoub (1978), the ILO (1962), and others, led NIOSH to publish its Work Practices Guide for Manual Lifting in 1981. The guide was based on research carried out in general industry, but subsequent research by Stobbe (1983) and Peters (1983) has suggested that the nature of the problems producing injuries in underground mining is the same as in general industry. The problems are more intense in the mining environment.

INTRODUCTION Underground mines in many parts of the world have elevated levels of short-lived 222Rn daughters. Lung cancer implicating exposure to short-lived daughters is documented in the U.S., Czechoslovakia, Canada, Sweden, the U.K., France and Newfoundland. An elevated lung cancer mortality (in excess of that expected) has been observed when cumulative exposure to alpha emitting short-lived 222Rn daughters (218Po, 214pb 214Bi 214Po) is greater than about 60 working level months (WLM) [1]/ (Hewett, D. 1979). This is equal to an absorbed alpha dose of about 30 rads to shallow basal cells in bronchial epithelium. Long-lived alpha emitters are also present in underground mines, and especially uranium mines because of airborne particulates containing uranium. The 238U parent of this primordial series supports other long-lived emitters 234U 230Th, 226Ra, Pb(210Po) which are in some degree of radioactive equilibrium with the parent 238U. Airborne particulates can be present due to drilling on the face of the ore body as well as in all parts of the mine through resuspension from the mine floor. Particles from 1 µm to about 5 µm penetrate the nose with reasonable efficiency and deposit primarily in the tracheobronchial tree. They are removed by ciliary motion (the bronchial escalator) but deliver an alpha dose to basal cells in bronchial epithelium during clearance in the same manner as short-lived 222Rn daughters. It is the purpose of this work to indicate the alpha dose to basal cells in bronchial epithelium delivered by the long-lived emitters 234, 238U. The dose calculations reported here based upon a few measured values of these isotopes in air in uranium mines in New Mexico and Colorado. MEASURED 234, 238U IN URANIUM MINE ATMOSPHERES In 1979, the U.S. Bureau of Mines undertook a study to evaluate personal monitors to be worn by miners to measure short-lived 222Rn daughters. One of these devices sampled air at 100 cm3/min through a 13 mm glass fiber filter, with a small pump worn on the belt. Alpha particles emitted by 222Rn daughters on the filter were measured continuously by a thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) chip. Each monitor was worn by a miner for a 170 hour working month and approximately one cubic meter of air was sampled during this period. Six different mines were selected for the test in New Mexico and Colorado. The mines used either wet or dry drilling methods. Miners in each location were equipped with the personal monitors. Subsequent to their use in evaluating the shortlived daughters, Dr. Robert Droullard of the Bureau generously gave us these filter samples along with a few blank glass fiber filters from the same box of filters used in the study so that long-lived emitters present in these mine atmospheres could be determined radiochemically. Four of the samples have been run for 234, 238U. The radiochemical procedure for uranium is adapted from USDOE, Environmental Measurements Laboratory Manual (Harley, J.H., 1976). Briefly, the samples were placed in platinum crucibles, spiked with 232U tracer and pretreated with nitric and hydrofluoric acid. The residue was fused with potassium fluoride to transpose to pyrosulfate. The fused cake was dissolved in 7 [N] hydrochloric acid and the solution passed through an anion exchange column to isolate uranium. Iron was removed using mercury cathode electrolysis. Uranium was electrodeposited onto platinum dies and counted using solid-state alpha spectrometry. The samples from each type of mine (wet and dry) were analyzed. The samples in the "wet" mine in New Mexico were selected on the basis of the original TLD measurement because they were near the maximum occupational standard for radon daughters. These samples should also represent upper limits to longlived activity encountered, since they were obtained at drilling operations on the face of the ore body. Samples collected in the "dry" mine in Colorado were pot associated with a particular location in the mine and should be representative of a month long overall exposure in many locations and operations. This image, while steeped in heritage, is no longer representative of what mining is: a global, increasingly diverse industry.It’s an industry made up of individuals like Zambian-born Chushi Mwewa, PE, president of Southlands Engineering, LLC in the United States and managing director of Southlands Engineering Limited in Zambia; Navajo tribe member Peter Denetclaw, manager of environmental programs and Navajo relations at Freeport-McMoRan; and Chinese and Jewish Alyssa Hom, a project engineer at McCarthy Building Companies.According to the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economics, 168 out of the world’s 195 recognized countries have some mining or mineral resources activity, and the mining industry directly employs more than 25 million people across the globe.However, according to McKinsey & Company’s 2017 “Women in the Workplace” study, white males hold 67 percent of C-Suite positions and 70 percent of senior vice president positions in the corporate world, and mining is no different. This uniformity among leadership has been tied to lower levels of employee engagement, innovation and business growth. The bottom line is this: Diversity is good for business. The question industry leaders must now ask themselves is not “Will we promote diversity?” but “How will we promote diversity efficiently and permanently?”More than 80 industry professionals, consultants and students gathered to discuss this question and share stories at the “Developing Diversity in Mining” workshop organized by the University of Arizona’s Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources (IMR), held during the 2017 SME Arizona Conference in December 2017.Brad Ross, co-director of the IMR and one of the facilitators of the workshop, said he felt diversity was important to discuss because he has witnessed its benefits throughout his career in the mining industry.“By creating a team of people with different experiences and perspectives, a company is better equipped to see the big picture and to creatively tackle problems,” he said. 4.1 – DEFINITIONS 4.1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS, ORES AND NONMETALLIC MINERALS F. N. EARLL A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic element or compound. Most minerals are distinctly crystalline in habit, and many commonly occur in well-formed crystals or crystalline aggregates, but a few species are characteristically amorphous or noncrystalline. Nearly 2,000 mineral species are now recognized but, perhaps fortun¬ately, a rather large proportion are rarely encountered. Even so, the application of modern mineral-detection and identification techniques reveals the presence of surprising numbers of mineral species, even in deposits of outwardly simple mineralogy. A rock is an aggregate of grains or crystals of one or more minerals. Some rocks are essentially monomineralic. Thus, limestone consists largely of the mineral calcite, and many sandstones are dominantly quartz. Most rock varieties, however, contain a number of mineral species, and their classification or identification depends upon the minerals present, their relative abundance, and such factors as rock tex¬ture and origin. Ore is defined as an accumulation or deposit of one or more minerals that can be exploited at a profit. The profit criterion commonly is taken somewhat liberally, however, for, although always present, the specific mineral content that constitutes a viable product is transitory. The term ore, usually, but no longer consistently, is restricted to the description of mineral deposits that are of value for their metal content. Nonmetallic deposits, although similar to metallic ores in many respects, generally are valued for the minerals or compounds present, as with rock salt (halite), rather than for individual contained elements, though such minerals as elemental sulfur are of much value. 4.1.2-ROCK TYPES F. N. EARLL Rocks arc grouped tinder three broad headings: (1) igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of magma; (2) sedimentary rocks formed by surface processes of weathering and deposition; and (3) metamorphic rocks, which may have been derived from either of the foregoing, but have undergone important physical and/or chemical changes through the application of heat or pressure, or both. The three groups can he further subdivided for convenient reference. Thus, igneous rocks are described as being abyssal or plutonic if formed at great depth, hypabyssal if formed at intermediate depth, and extrusive or effusive if formed at or on the earth's surface. The sedimentary rock group is similarly subdivided into clastic sediments and chemical precipitates. The clastic sediments form by deposition of preexisting minerals that were released from their place of origin by weathering and were transported to their point of deposition as discrete grains

The challenge of mining coal seams having a pitch of 30 degrees is one not frequently found in the United States, due primarily to the scarcity of such deposits. However, in the Thompson Creek District in Pitkin, Colorado, such a challenge exists to produce high quality medium volatile coking coal, and development of a longwall system is underway. The deposits under consideration are those of the Anschutz Corporation Inc. of Denver, Colorado, which are not in a virgin state. The properties were originally mined by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation from 1894-1907, and by the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. from 1953-1966. Approximately five and one half million tons of coal have been mined by the above companies, attesting to its quality. The cessation of operations in both instances was occasioned by economics. Both companies employed a room and pillar system of mining, but being denied the use of high capacity mining and loading machinery because of the excessive pitch of the coal seam. This resulted in an unfavorable productivity expressed as output per man-shift, and thus the high cost of production occasioned by hand loading and semi-mechanization dictated cessation of operations. There is pressing need for better means of exploring ground conditions ahead of mining. Exploration drilling has the drawbacks of high cost and a seriously restricted sampling zone. Traditional geophysical exploration methods including gravity, magnetic and resistivity techniques have been used with some success underground, but all give poor target delineation relative to range, since they depend upon minor distortions of a potential force field. Much greater ratios of resolution to range can, in principle, be obtained by employing electromagnetic or seismic radiation as the exploring agent. This is because propagation time delays can be used to measure range accurately, and to separate the small effect of a distant target from the much larger effects of nearer targets and of the transmitter. Seismic waves have long been used with great success in exploration for petroleum, and recent research on their application underground is promising. Electromagnetic (radar) waves have been very successfully used for detection and location through the air and outer space, and have also explored through polar icecaps more than a mile thick.l It is not generally realized that below the soil many rocks are also somewhat radar-transparent, and that radar can be used for exploring such rocks, once a quarry, a mine, a borehole, or other means of access has been opened. Radar waves are reflected by any boundary or object where they encounter a large change in electrical properties.2 The usual cause of such a change is a difference in moisture content. There are many methods to estimate costs quickly. One of these is the Parametric Method, where costs are estimated from general algorithms (or curves). Derived from an original tool based on the O’Hara model, a software called MAFMINE was developed. MAFMINE is based on parametric models to estimate investment and operational costs in mining. The software itself is based on the use of a computer model known as client-server. However, the model needs new inputs from advances made by the mining industry, mainly in terms of electrification, automation, digital transformation and preconcentration to face Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) concerns. Thus, this work was to prepare a new core module ready to incorporate the new technologies aiming to deliver operation and capital costs associated with environmental impact mitigation. The tool generates an order of magnitude estimate for CAPEX and OPEX to establish a very first Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) in a mining venture. For quick evaluations, at a preliminary level, the results are very promising.

Introduction An engineer is a builder and a problem solver. He uses knowledge of the properties of matter and energy to furnish the needs of society. Engineers form the bridge between scientific researchers and the general public, most of whom are technologically illiterate. Mining, metallurgical, and petroleum engineers extract minerals from the ground and process them into usable forms. Then, other engineers further process them into society's needs. Minerals engineers deal with more uncertainty than other engineers. Each ore deposit has its own personality and each ore is metallurgically unique. Minerals engineers, therefore, must be flexible, often applying larger safety factors and contingencies than other engineers, and frequently functioning as a jack of all trades. A minerals engineer can work in coal, oil, oil shale, base metals, ferrous metals, precious metals, industrial minerals, strategic minerals, or in exploration. Other mining jobs include banking and financing, education and research, marketing and sales, and government. As a minerals engineer, you may be among the first to work on the ocean floor or the moon. College Preparation A difference between college and industry is the type of problems to be solved. A typical college problem has an exact answer derived from given information. An industry problem is more apt to have a solution chosen from a number of alternatives. Information required for the solution is not given. It must be measured, calculated, looked-up, estimated, or otherwise derived. Solutions involve trade-offs, economics, and human factors, as well as application of physical laws and theory. When a college problem is answered, you move on to the next one. In industry, however, the headaches may just be starting with the implementation of the solution. Students often complain that they see little use for the theory they are learning. This is valid. A good professor will link theory and practice. Another difference between college and industry is the price of failure. In college, you can make a half-hearted effort in an assignment and take your C or D. On the job, however, poor engineering results in potentially effective projects being rejected and unsound projects being undertaken. Poor performance results in cost overruns, schedule holdups, oversights, disgruntled employees, irate bosses, unsafe structures, and unreliable systems. The costs are time, money, and possibly lives. The student pays the university for his work - not the other way around. So the rewards for good schoolwork often seem nebulous. But education must be viewed as an investment. Working for good grades will help you think better, learn more, receive better job offers, and perform more effectively on the job. There is no substitute for hard work. Avoid taking the easiest electives. If you desire a more liberal education or dislike rigorous physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering courses, change majors. Remember, you are training to be an engineer, not a computer programmer or market analyst. At least one summer of industry employment is necessary for minerals engineering students. The sooner you gain actual experience, the sooner you will know whether to change majors. Most large companies hire students during summer. It is best to send out applications around Christmas break. First and second year students usually work as laborers. Upper-classmen may work as engineering technicians. Students must sometimes choose between returning to a company at a higher position or trying a different company at a lower position, for more varied experience. Both alternatives have advantages. Do your best on these summer jobs. The company is watching. If you do well, the chances are good you will get a job offer when you graduate. Good references are important when you begin job hunting. Interviewing occurs near the end of your school career. The standard procedure is to send your resume with a cover letter to each company you are interested in. The resume for a graduating engineer with little experience need not exceed one page. The cover letter must be written for the individual company.

The direct precipitation of uranium with hydrogen peroxide has been known since 1877. Commercial use of the process began in the 1960's. During 1967 the Bureau of Mines assisted the Climax Uranium Co., Grand Junction, Colorado in the development of a uranyl peroxide precipitation process to control a molybdenum impurity problem (1). Atlas Minerals, Moab, Utah has used hydrogen peroxide to control vanadium and sodium levels in their uranium concentrates since 1969 (2). Recently, the use of hydrogen peroxide by the uranium industry has grown, particularly since the increased demand for uranium has led to the processing of low grade ores. Impurities present in low grade ores can be concentrated with the uranium during milling and will substantially complicate the refining of uranium yellowcake concentrates. Consequently, commercial nuclear fuel processors have imposed stringent specifications and penalties to control these impurities. The ability to produce a pure uranium yellowcake can eliminate penalty or reprocessing costs. Hydrogen peroxide precipitation of uranium is specific and quantitative, producing a very high purity product.

Red Dog is a Mississippian to Permian aged sulfide deposit located in the western Brooks Range north of Kotzebue, Alaska. It belongs in the family of black Shale hosted sedimentary exhalite deposits but lacks classic sulfide sedimentary textures. Pervasive silicification, and a significant portion of the mineralization, is replacement in nature. An extensive feeder vein system cuts the footwall and the exhalite package. A Jurassic to cretaceous age compressional event has repeated the ore section through thrust faulting and folding. The orebody contains 77,000,000 metric tons averaging 17.1% Zn, 5.0% Pb and 82 g per metric ton of Ag. Weathering has locally altered the sulfides to sulfates and formed elemental sulfur.

Dump truck tires are often used in long-haul roads in rugged terrain, with high rolling and grade resistances. These conditions increase the ton-kilometer-per-hour (tkm/hr) or short-ton-mile-per-hour (stmph)rating of tires, leading to tread wear, cuts and complete failures. The load-bearing capacities of these tires are sometimes exceeded, with truck overloading, overstressing, heating and subsequent failures. In addition, truck tire demand far exceeds the current supply capacity, with long lead ordering time. This condition has caused severe tire shortage, and the problem is expected to be sustained in the long-term. Industry has taken extensive practical measures to prolong tire service life with significant results. However, this problem can be solved through fundamental and applied research initiatives. This paper pioneers a research effort in tire service life using multibody physics, fatigue failure modes and soil failure dynamics to develop tire-road contact force dynamics. A virtual prototype simulator of the tire-road contact, using the CAT 775E (with standard tire 24.00R35) was developed and simulated within the MSC.ADAMS/NASTRAN environments. The results show the areas of the loaded tires with maximum Von Mises, principal and shear stresses, which could result in fatigue failure, tire wear and tear and blowouts. The maximum Von Mises stresses on the six truck tires are between 35 and 58 MPa. The maximum shear stresses are also between 19 and 33 MPa. These stresses will cause early tire failures given an average operating schedule of between 20 and 24 hours per day. The isolated areas with maximum stresses will be subjected to further studies to reduce stress intensity while preserving tire performance.

Crushers are designed and manufactured to survive the severe duty of mining environments worldwide. Under these conditions the crusher performance and availability is one of the critical factors in the mine?s production and profitability. Traditionally the development of these machines tends to be experience-based, incremental improvements in design due to challenges of different applications, duty, or manufacturing. In order to better serve the mining industry a new approach was taken to the design of primary crushers. This approach was to focus on safety and maintenance activities. The result of this effort is a new generation of gyratory crushers that can be serviced from above. Using the features of this new generation of crushers to their fullest extent crushing installations have improved safety, reduced design and construction costs, and lowered maintenance requirements. This presentation explores the benefits of two crusher installations utilizing top service crushers.

Maintaining stable high walls can be a challenging task. Complex geological and structural features, alteration zones, rock mass properties, and hydrogeological conditions must be well understood to design a safe mining environment. Economic considerations must also be taken into account as the mine operator must provide ore deliveries and protect reserves. However, even when good engineering practices are followed, and proper blasting and mining techniques are implemented, slope movements may still occur. When these slope instabilities are minor, the mine is often able to continue operations with minimal impacts on safety or production. When these occurrences are excessive and coupled with high rates of movement, a robust monitoring system is crucial to continuing mining activities while protecting personnel. This paper summarizes the approach an open pit mine in Nevada took as excessive and rapid high-wall movement was experienced in an integral area. Creative mining approaches, combined with slope monitoring radar technology, were utilized to maintain safe and successful mining activities despite active movement that exceeded an average velocity of 30 inches per day.

The Powderhorn complex as a source of perovskite (calcium titanate) containing about 1.5% rare earths has been examined in several recent feasibility studies. Much promising exploration and process research has been done in recent years. This paper is presented with cautious optimism and with the acknowledgment that there may be some technical and economic areas yet to be explored. The Powderhorn carbonatite and alkalic stock in Gunnison County, Colorado, lies about 203 airlines km southwest of Denver at an elevation of 2450 to 2750 m (see Figures land 2). All of the mineable ore bodies are owned by Buttes Resources Company of Houston, Texas.

The studies described in this paper have established that flotation conducted in a column cell provided with gas generation by aspiration into surface tension lowered water, may considerably increase the efficiency and particle size range of a flotation process. Operation of a DEISTER FLOTAIRE ® Cell at several Southwest United States flotation plants under continuous rougher, scavenger and cleaner conditions has demonstrated the main positive features to be: (a) higher capacity per unit volume than conventional flotation equipment, (b) improvement of flotation of plus 0.210 m particles, (c) improved flotation of particles minus 0.037 m.

The semi-autogenous grinding circuit at the Utah Mines Limited, Island Copper Operation, located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, is described. Since start-up of the operation in 1971 grinding circuit throughput has been progressively increased from the initial design rate of 30,000 to the current average 45,000 tonnes per day (t/d) of porphyry copper ore. Key developments and modifications in operating and maintenance practice that have contributed to this increase are reviewed.

Choosing the right valve for corrosive, abrasive slurry applications requires exacting analysis and a comprehensive understanding of the complete slurry process. Within the realm of flow control in abrasive and corrosive slurry applications, there is no room for a one-size-fits-all approach. To ensure minimal maintenance, maximum uptime and the lowest overall cost of ownership, the slurry processing toolbox must contain countless alloy and elastomeric pairings ? each carefully targeted to the particular process medium and conditions. This materials selection process is best tackled by turning to expert slurry application engineers and valve product managers who work closely with customers to specify the optimal valve for the given parameters. ?When plant operators and design engineers apply conventional valves in abrasive applications or use metal seated valves or simply apply the wrong valve for a particular flow control situation, it typically leads to rapid valve failure, the potential for hazardous leakage, unexpected shutdowns and costly downtime,? said Cal Cobb, valve products manager for Weir Minerals North America, manufacturer of Isogate slurry valves for service in mining, minerals processing and metallurgical environments.

To assist in the reduction of environmental degradation resulting from milling operations, the Bureau of Mines has developed, and successfully demonstrated, chemical, vegetative, and combined chemical-vegetative procedures for stabilizing milling wastes under varying environmental conditions. Costs of achieving reclamation using these stabilization procedures are compared with those of other physical and vegetative approaches. The Bureau's chemical-vegetative procedure for establishing vegetation directly on fine-sized wastes compares favorably with other stabilization processes that have been used.
