Biological leaching using native heterotrophic bacteria was studied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as a means of extracting manganese from a domestic low-grade wad ore. Column heap leaching simulation techniques were employed using molasses as the nutrient source for the bacteria. These column studies were designed to investigate the effects of molasses medium flow rate, concentration, and replacement interval on the extent and rate of manganese extraction. .Results showed that flow rates between 0.41 and 8.1 L/min/m2 had little impact on manganese extraction. The total amount of molasses used did have a direct effect on the extent and rate of manganese extraction. Manganese extractions over 90-pct were obtained in 12 weeks of bioleaching with 2-week medium replacement cycles.

Deep "paste" thickeners have been used in the alumina industry for several decades to improve chemical recovery and allow “stacking” of the red mud for disposal. These paste systems have eliminated many traditional tailings ponds in addition to providing better tails washing and better water recovery. This technology is not widely used or understood in other mineral processing applications. However, there is growing worldwide recognition of the advantages of concentrating mill tailings to a “paste”, i.e. a solid suspension that does not settle or segregate. This technology offers several alternatives to the traditional tailings pond such as “stacking” or mine backfill. More water recovery is possible than with high rate thickeners. Process benefits come in the form of better chemical and metals recovery through better washing in counter current decantation (CCD) applications. Obtaining a true paste (non-segregating suspension which exhibits a yield stress) and understanding the handling characteristics for applications outside alumina, are recent developments. Achieving all of the benefits available from a paste system requires careful design that takes into account the specific requirements of the disposal application along with the peculiar difficulties in producing and handling paste. In fact, design of a paste system is markedly different from a conventional system. Project design usually requires the cooperation of experts in several interrelated specialties including geotechnical, thickener design, pumping and discharge design and controls. A successful project must coordinate all activities to ensure that the overall objectives for the project are achieved. This paper describes the properties of paste, reviews the applications, and discusses the design of a complete paste deposition system.

"This paper provides an overview of the current use of auxiliary ventilation products and the challenges with limited air quantity in dead-end entry or working faces. The PVC’s low frictional factor, low physical constraint and minimum leakage properties were ideal to develop as ventilation duct in conjunction with the concept of ""Made in the US and Used in the US"". The PVC duct supports the operational and total cost of ownership with on-going success. This paper will discuss the continuous improvement made in ventilation ancillary products for optimum results. The paper will also cover mine site usage of second generation PVC vent duct underground and the results from the operational and technical side making a difference in health and safety and overall auxiliary ventilation. INTRODUCTION The Barrick Turquoise Ridge Inc. (TR) is located in northern central Nevada, and is situated within the Basin and Range province, near the northeast end of the Osgood Mountains (see Figure 1). The TRJV mine consists of typical Carlin type- gold mineralization characterized by low strength rock of altered limestone, siltstones, and mudstones. The weak nature of the ground facilitates the need for underhand cut and fills mining methods.Mining Method; Underhand cut and fill: The mine uses underhand cut and fill method which has 12’x12’ and or 14’x14’ top cuts with several different size undercuts. The ore body is accessed off of a secondary tertiary heading, utilizing a heading with a cross section of 14W x 14H or 15W x 15H configuration. In the wider and more massive zones, two headings in a production panel may be worked at any one time. Drift round lengths are determined by the ground conditions and drift dimension. An example of a typical topcut and associated undercut layout is shown in Figure 2."

There are numerous techniques and predictive models used by geologists and mining engineers to define coal reserves and plan mines. The traditional reserve estimation methods commonly used include the isopach, triangular, polygonal, inverse-distance weighting, weighted-moving-average, and trend-surface methods. Geostatistically-based estimation techniques are now being examined by many geologists and mine planners as a superior alternative to these traditional methods. With today's coal mine development costs often exceeding $100 million, and power generation $1 billion, it is logical that a technique that can indicate the degree of confidence associated with a reserve estimate (fuel supply), and thus also the degree of risk, is highly desirable to the coal producer, the financiers, and those desiring to commit to coal utilization under short or long-term supply arrangements.

The distribution of mercury in soils, rocks, and ore was studied in three areas of the Pachuca-Real del Monte District: (1) An area north of the town of Pachuca where ore veins have been found at or near the surface. The mercury content of soil samples taken near the vein zones is far above the background value. The highest value was 1900 ppb (parts per billion) mercury in a soil sample above Veta Vizcaina; the background is about 50 ppb Hg. (2) In the area north of the town of Real del Monte where only a few of the veins are known to crop-out. Regardless of exposure, soils collected over veins show anomalous mercury values ranging from 250 ppb to 1900 ppb. (3) In an area south of the town of Real del Monte. Here, although vein outcrops are lacking, mineralization is known at a depth of about 120 m. All soil samples taken at 50 m. intervals along an east-west traverse contain anomalous amounts of mercury, with peaks corresponding with the known location of the veins.

Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained. Experimental equipment and procedure The arrangement of the column cell and auxiliary equipment for continuous flow testing is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The feed sump [O] is filled with a sufficient volume of prepared sample to permit a large number of tests to be performed (typically 12). Past experience has shown this is necessary to control sample variability and variability in the size distribution resulting from ultra fine grinding. The feed slurry is maintained at about 20% solids and is constantly recirculated and stirred. The sample is metered from the circulating pipe by a peristaltic pump [O]. The feed slurry is diluted with reagentized water [O] by a second peristaltic pump [O]. Wash water [O], also reagentized, is supplied through a third peristaltic pump [O]. While this feed system may seem unduly complex, it does permit users to independently vary either the wash water rate or the net solids content of the cell. In the tests reported here, the feed rate and net percent solids were constant at 12.5 gms/min. and 3.3%, respectively. Diluted feed enters the column through 6.35 mm-diam (0.25 in.-diam) copper tubing and is discharged upwardly at the center of the column. Tailings are discharged through flexible tubing that can be adjusted so as to control the position of the pulp-froth interface. The column is 76.2 mm-internal-diam (3 in.-internal-diam) and 1090 mm (43 in.) high. It is made from lucite tubing and is fitted with a 51-mm-diam (2-in.-diam) fritted glass air sparger having an average pore diameter of 50 µm. In performing a series of tests, the concentrate and tailing are allowed to discharge continuously. The system is allowed to equilibrate for 30 minutes after the pulp and froth reach operating levels. Concentrate and tailing samples are taken simultaneously for timed intervals (five to 15 minutes, depending on the volume of sample desired). After sampling, a change in operating conditions is made and the system is again allowed to equilibrate. The tests to determine the effect of the pulp-froth interface level were part of a larger series of tests in which the objective was to optimize the conditions for a rougher flotation stage in a two stage circuit. The sample used in this series of tests was an Alabama shale ground to d90 = 23.1 µm and d50 = 7.9 µm. The operating conditions remaining constant in this series of tests were as follows: Column height - 1600 mm (63 in.) Air sparser - 50 µm (average pore diameter) Spray water - 130 cc/min. Feed rate - 12.5 gm/min (0.4 oz per min) (dry solids) Percent solids - 3.3% Frother (Dowfroth 250) - 45 ppm The variable test conditions are tabulated in Table 1. Positions of the pulp level (pulp froth interface) and feed entry are presented as a percentage of column height (as measured from the face of the air sparser). The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion project in coastal Virginia, USA will add two 1.5-mile (2.4 km) TBM bored tunnels alongside two existing immersed-tube tunnels between artificial islands. The site’s unusual constraints and the requirements of a large-diameter variable-density TBM shaped the design-builder’s decisions for handling TBM inputs and outputs, siting the TBM plant and supporting equipment, and sequencing tunnel-construction operations. This paper addresses the logistics necessary to enable key functions of the 46-ft (14-m) TBM and its ancillary equipment, including transport of most materials by barge, U-turn of the TBM on an artificial island, and delivery of materials for the second tunnel through the first one while interior structures are under construction.

I appreciate very much the invitation to speak with you and the opportunity of bringing you messages from both the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Assistant Secretary for Health/Acting Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you (the organizers of this Conference) on identifying the critical issues in the field and assembling such a broad array of experts to address them. I would like to present a brief view of the emerging framework for health that puts into perspective some of the aspirations of the Administration and to highlight several points with regard to prevention and occupational health. The goals are: 1. To improve the overall health status of our people. (This has been and will remain the National policy regarding health.); 2. To engage the Nation in the important effort of enhancing public health. (This is not reserved exclusively for the activity of the Federal Government or for State Governments. Public health has to be a cooperative effort that brings together all of the people engaged in the process of serving the people.); and 3. To pledge that health care will not be priced out of anyone's reach because of inflation. (It is clear that there are major tasks of bringing about economic recovery in our country. One aspect of this effort is to guard against the cost of health care not being allowed to rise beyond the reach of persons who need that care.) "How will these goals be achieved and what must change in the delivery of health and medical care in our society?" There are a number of real issues as well as perceptions that adversely affect the attainment of these goals: First, The cost of medical care is soaring and the public, industry unions and other elements of our society are becoming concerned. (They recognize the problem and are demanding a solution.); Second, There is a growing concern about the priorities that have been set. (For example, the evidence that preventive interventions are the most effective approach is overwhelming, yet medicine has not yet given that a high priority.); and Third, There is the perception that physicians do too much to too many people at too great a cost and that too much and too costly technologies are used. In view of the perceptions, we all must accept some changes and the challenges that needed changes will bring. A month before the new budget went to Congress, President Reagan went on nationwide television and told the American people that, "It is time to recognize that we have come to a turning point and we are threatened with an economic calamity of tremendous proportion and the [old business as usual treatment can't save us. Together we must chart a new course]." Now eight months down the road from this and a long Spring and Summer of discussion both within the Executive Branch and in the Congress, many plans and programs and concepts have emerged. The new course has been charted and the turning point has been made. Business as usual has been put aside and the Administration's leadership has been stretched and tested in putting forth a better approach with the reality that money is tight and that old habits of delivering care are difficult to change. The Congress has now given us a look at a new health budget that takes into account some of the harsh economic realities and that does make allowances for the persistence of familiar behavior. Against this background, it is now possible to begin addressing ways to provide health services to people at a price the Nation can afford to pay. There are without question difficult decisions involved but the Administration is committed to supporting and improving health care in America. It has been the President's contention that one of the principal causes of the inflationary spiral in the country was the steady and indefensible growth of the Federal budget. The problem stems from the fact that we have been living well, but beyond our means for nearly 30 years. Now we are discovering that there is a bottom to the barrel after all. It is possible for our society to run out of things like energy (oil), water or money. The health bills must be paid -- by Government, by insurance, by parents or by someone. Each year with a bigger shopping list and more money to spend the Federal Government went into the marketplace to buy. This action altered the

Manganese is about twelfth in the list of the most abundant elements in the earth's crust (Reidies, 1981). More than 150 known minerals contain manganese as an essential constituent (Mellor, 1932). In general, ores containing at least 35%Mn are classified as manganese ores, ores with 10-35%Mn are called ferroginous manganese ores, and ores containing 5-10%Mn are known as manganiferrous ores. One very important class of manganiferrous ores are manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the Western United States. Silver is very often associated with manganese oxides which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, which is known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (10-1500oz Ag/ton) and in volcanic rocks (less than 1.0oz Ag/ton).

The extraction and recovery of gold from copper electrorefining slimes by leaching and solvent extraction using dibutyl carbitol (DBC) has been practiced for several decades. Yet, the deportment of some common elements in this process has not been reported. The focus of this paper is to report the behavior of copper, bismuth, silver and selenium during the processing of industrial solutions by batch and continuous extraction on the laboratory scale. It was found that DBC, while an excellent extractor of gold from a highly oxidative chloride leach solution, also loads significant quantities of Cu, Bi, and Se. Silver was not present in significant quantities in the leach solution nor did it load appreciably. The deportment of gold and impurities are reported for batch and continuous operations of a two-stage extraction process using distribution ratios and separation factors.

The Bureau of Mines has studied the possibility of using the heap leaching process for treating the gold ores in the sedimentary beds of northeastern Nevada. This paper summarizes all available information on the technical and economic feasibility of heap leaching oxidized ores from these beds, past industry application of vat leaching, results of recent Bureau of Mines and industry tests on heap leaching ores from this region, and requirements for planning the proper application of heap leaching. Preliminary tests on representative samples of ores from the region show that a satisfactory recovery of gold can be obtained by heap leaching the ores with cyanide at a relatively coarse size. Significant deposits of gold ore occur in sedimentary beds of various locations over an extended area 40 miles wide and 200 miles long in northeastern Nevada. The area is centered 40 miles west of and runs parallel to the leading edge of the Roberts Mountain thrust fault system, a prominent geologic feature in the area. The general locations of past and present gold mining operations are shown in figure 1. (slide 1)

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and six EPRI-member utilities are sponsoring research to define relationships between coal properties and coal handling behavior. Deratings and outages caused by plugged chutes or bunkers or frozen coal can cost utilities millions of dollars annually in lost energy production as well as in manpower to restore coal flow. There is also the added expense of maintaining redundant equipment to assure a continuous coal feed to the boiler, a common practice for utilities. Over the past two years, researchers at CQ Inc. and Iowa state university have collected and analyzed coal samples to develop a coal handleability index for utilities to use when specifying coals for their power plants. These coal samples cover ranges in ash content, rank, grindability, size distribution, and moisture content--properties that affect the handling behavior of coals. Other properties, such as the washability and ash composition, are measured as well. Over the remaining two years of the project, all of these analyses will be correlated to handling behavior, measured using a triaxial shear tester that determines the strength of a coal under compression. An index will be developed and validated at host utility power plants.

If one considers that prehistoric man's first house may have been a limestone cave, calcium carbonate may be the most timeless of all building materials. Fanciful history aside, CaCO3 has been used for countless applications in human habitats. After all, tine marble block and tiles have always been the hallmark of eloquents and style. Mortars and cements derived from limestone have held together the very blocks of our civilization. In modem times, synthetic polymers are blended with ground limestone to produce everything from pipe, floor tile, cultured marble and house siding. All of these miracles of our technology contain CacO3 of various sizes and in varying amounts. This paper will discuss some of the critical attributes of CaCO3 which make it suitable for the new building products that have helped increase our standard of living. The vehicle of discussion will be a residential, single family house.

For centuries Thailand has been a significant, though primarily unofficial, producer of gold. Panning has been the traditional way of making a living for innumerable villagers during the December to May dry season following the harvest. During this period groups can be seen working the streams, rivers, fields and dry valleys at as many as 90 localities in 28 provinces. Attesting to their efforts are the five and a half ton solid gold Buddha at Wat Trimit and much of the gold jewelry sold in Bangkok. This traditional panning will continue, and probably become more extensive, in harmony with commercial endeavors using modern technology suitable for extraction of gold from types of deposits for which gravity separation would give very low recoveries. Several such deposits have been discovered in the course of geochemical and geological surveys conducted by the Royal Thai Department of Mineral Resources with the object of contributing to early interpretation of the results of a country-wide airborne survey.

Sulfuric acid mist is an undesired by-product of the copper electrowinning process, caused by oxygen evolution at the anode which entrains droplets of the acidic copper electrolyte solution. As the oxygen moves to the surface of the cell, these droplets become aerosolized resulting in acid mist. The addition of chemical anti-misting agents to the copper electrolyte is a common mitigation technique. This paper details Syensqo’s laboratory development of a new environmentally friendly acid mist suppressant, ACORGA® EW98. The product exhibits excellent acid mist suppression and it is fully compatible with the adjacent solvent extraction process. Lab and pilot test results are reviewed ahead of future planned industrial trial testing.

This nation is a leading world producer of asbestos, gypsum, sulphur, nepheline syenite, titania slag, potash and barite. It has reserves in asbestos for at least 30 years enough potash to supply the current world's needs for 2,000 years and sulphur reserves for 40 years of current world demand, One of the ilmenite deposits contains enough titania to supply the current world demand for at least, 25 years.

Remote control for mining machines ordinarily means the operator is not seated on the machine, but is located within direct view of the machine and work area Thus, remote control operators are exposed to the hazards of roof/rib falls and dust/methane explosions. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a method to disassociate remote operators from these hazards. Off-board, computer-based "tele-operational" systems are utilized that station the operators one-hundred meters or more distant from the working faces. Details are provided for tele-operated systems for thin-seam extraction and haulage equipment in highwall and deep, room-and-pillar coal mines.

"On-site research and development as well as in-situ testing are key factors to the successful implementation of new mining equipment and technology. Unfortunately the demands and necessities of research and development often conflict with the reality of mine production in operational mines, especially during early stages of research and development and the initial testing of new equipment. Several experimental mines under university supervision attend to this problem and provide a close-to- reality testing environment for the mining industry and mining equipment manufacturers. This paper gives an overview of the design and organization of such an underground testing area as well as of the wide range of possible operations it can facilitate at the example of the FLB Experimental and Teaching Mine (Forschungs- und Lehrbergwerk) at Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg, the central European underground research mine. INTRODUCTION As well as the Mining Engineering education follows the same pattern worldwide, the tasks and duties to be fulfilled by engineers in the productive mines are comparable around the globe. This also holds true for the technologies and equipment needed, both in surface and underground mines. Almost all mining equipment brands are being distributed worldwide. The tasks and challenges of guaranteeing an ever- increasing productivity at the mines, while simultaneously maintaining, respectively improving, safety standards, also in the developing countries and emerging economies, requests a constant development, improvement and adaption both of the engineering education and of R&D in technology and equipment. The increasing safety requirements at the mines, in combination with also increasing safety and liability policies, do often not allow a proper practical education of mining engineering students. At the same time, new technologies and equipment to be deployed / brought to the mines have to be fully functional in a production operation from the very first moment. Time losses like break-down time or even repair and maintenance breaks are often costly and, even when expected up to a certain degree with newly developed machines, have a wider negative impact on the neighboring operations and operations within that mine, thus often being unacceptable within the ongoing production process and extremely costly."

Slope stability in open pit mines is governed by rock structure, rock quality, ground water conditions, blasting, pit geometry and excavation method. Of these factors, the control of ground water pressures often represents the primary tool to improve slope stability. Production equipment has recently been used to stabilize two slide areas by dewatering using blasthole drills for vertical holes and secondary drills for horizontal holes. This paper describes both of these dewatering programs and contrasts an earlier slope stabilization program that employed a subcontracted horizontal drill.

After Abe Lee discovered gold (in April 1860) near the site of present-day Leadville, Colorado, he and is group staked nearly all of California Gulch with "speculative claims." They did so in an effort to grab any property that might be potentially profitable. But the plan did not work. New prospectors demanded a miners' meeting, from which arose the official "Bylaws of California Mining District, California Gulch, Arkansas River." These bylaws, adopted on May 12, 1860, established provisions as to the number, size and type of claims that could be filed. Fair laws invited more newcomers. By mid-summer, 5,000 people with tents and wagons were scattered from one end of the gulch to the other.Among the earliest arrivals to the region that spring were Horace Austin Warner Tabor and his wife, Augusta. H.A.W. Tabor, who was to become a pillar in the development of Leadville, arrived at California Gulch during a food shortage. He sacrificed his oxen so that hungry miners could eat. By doing so, he immediately became the friend of many. Augusta established a little store where she sold her baked goods and provided meals. Like most of the men, Horace prospected the surrounding hills. He only did so, however, for a short time. California Gulch yielded more than $5 million in gold during the next five years. By 1866, however, the placer gold was gone and most of the miners had packed up and left. Charles J. Mullen and Cooper Smith, who were grubstaked by a Philadelphian named J. Marshall Paul, found a new, rich lode at the Printer Boy Mine in 1868. It was the first underground gold mine in the Leadville area and marked the transition from surface mining to underground hard rock mining. Its discovery created a new but modest flurry of activity. Heavy black sand covered the region and made gold mining difficult. In 1875 William Stevens and Alvinus Wood decided to have the sand assayed. They discovered that it contained 15 ounces per ton of silver and was rich in carbonate. Stevens and Wood kept their find a secret for nearly two years. When the word spread in late 1877, the silver boom was on. In 1878 prospectors, merchants and others trickled into town from all directions. Dr. David H. Dougan closed his office. in Alma, crossed Mosquito Pass and set up shop in Leadville. Nobody seemed to need a doctor, however, and Dougan sat in his office for 28 days without a customer. On the 29th day he received word that there had been a mining accident and he was needed immediately. -That was the begin¬ning of his illustrious career in Leadville. Dougan was a successful physician, became mayor in 1881 and was later president of the Carbonate National Bank. Leadville was a simple community of log structures in 1878. By June of the following year, however, it had blossomed considerably. According to Cass Carpenter, as of May 1,1879, Leadville had "...19 hotels, 41 lodging houses, 82 drinking saloons, 38 restaurants, 13 wholesale liquor houses, 10 lumber yards, 7 smelting and reduction works, 2 sampling works for testing ores, 12 blacksmith shops, 6 livery stables, 6 jewelry stores, 3 undertakers and 21 gambling houses where all sorts of games are played as openly as the Sunday School sermon is conducted." Additionally, there were 36 brothels. When George E. King and other architects arrived, Leadville took on an air of elegance and sophistication. In sharp contrast to some of the Victorian-style, gingerbread-laced homes in Leadville, its suburbs were comprised of many tenement shacks and plain cabins mixed with a few commercial buildings, many mines and smelters. Mines sprinkled the area east of Leadville like pepper from a pepper shaker. Wherever there was a cluster of mines, a camp usually sprang up. Most were very close together. South of Leadville the giant Arkansas Valley lead smelter sprawled out between Stringtown and Bucktown in an area known as Smelter Valley. Founded in 1879 as the Billing and Eilers Smelter, the Arkansas Valley plant was operated by the American Smelting and Refining Company. Several other smelters operated in the vicin¬ity. In April 1878, Horace Tabor grubstaked prospectors August Rische and George Hook. For $64 worth of supplies and tools, he was guaranteed a one-third interest in their findings.
