In response to the Natural Resources Canada “Crush It Challenge”, Corem partnered with the University of British Columbia and led a project to develop and demonstrate the use of high-pressure grinding to replace the workhorse of the industry, wet ball milling, with high-pressure grinding. Two plant case studies, a small tonnage gold recovery operation, and a large tonnage copper recovery operation, were carried out. Plant circuit performances were compared to pilot plants operated on the same circuit feed set up to represent the novel equipment and flowsheet that was developed to produce separation circuit feed. Numerous obstacles to industrial implementation of highpressure grinding in this role which were recognized at the outset of the work were successfully addressed. In both cases, comminution equipment energy savings alone, and final stage total circuit energy savings, exceeded 60% and 50%, respectively. Downstream mineral separation performance was the same or better.

The Bureau cf Mines, U.S. Department of the Intericr, is investigating biolcgical and chemical deccntaminaticn of cyanide- containing leachates and residues. Biolcgical cyanide cxidaticn, using bacteria isolated from a precious metals tailings pond, destroyed >85 pct of the cyanide in several prccessing solutions containing up tc 280 ppm CN. Reaction time varied from about 4.5 hr in a trickling reactor using quartz as a bacterial substrate to 2 mo in unagitated, covered flasks. Chemical techniques were used to destroy the remaining complexed cyanide down to 1 ppm. Exploratory tests were also conducted using spent ore from heap leach operations as the bacterial substrate to determine if biological cyanide oxidation could be used to destroy the residual cyanide in spent heaps.

Perlite is rhyolitic glass with 2 to 5 percent by weight (wt.%) bound water held within the silicic-glass structure. It is often distinguished by vitreous, pearly luster and concentric perlitic fractures ("onionskin"). Occurrences worldwide are associated with Tertiary to middle Quaternary volcanic rocks. Perlite is in silicic domes, plugs, laccoliths, flows, vitric tephra, chill margins of dikes and sills, and welded ash-flow tuffs. It is a hydrated volcanic glass formed through secondary alteration of obsidian by the incorporation of water into the glass/silica structure. Post-emplacement hydration (weathering) of cooled glasses by meteoric water is the principal alteration process, but some hydration by magmatic or meteoric water during or shortly after emplacement, or hydration by water exsolved during cooling may occur. Commercial "perlite" is any volcanic glass that expands or "pops" when heated quickly to plasticity while evolving steam and thus forming a lightweight, frothy material. The expansion temperature typically ranges from 1,100 to 1,500°F. An expanded volume increase of 10 to 40 times the original volume yields expanded densities of 1.5 to 11 pounds per cubic foot (lbs/ft3). Perlite is mined by eight companies at 10 operations in six western states. New Mexico accounts for more than 80% of the total tonnage mined. The rest comes from Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, and Nevada. In 1992, domestic production was 571,000 short tons (st), domestic apparent consumption was 591,000 st, and the value of crude perlite was $15.3 million. In 1991, with about the same production and price of crude perlite, the gross value for expanded perlite was $101.7 million. Perlite exports in 1992, primarily to Canada, are estimated an 30,000 st; and imports, from Greece, are an estimated 50,000 st. In 1992, 70 plants in 33 states expanded crude perlite. Construction uses of expanded perlite accounted for 66% of total domestic sales. Expanded perlite used as filter aid accounted for 15%. All other markets, including use as a filler and in agriculture, accounted for 19%. Leading states for expanding perlite, ranked by order of sales, were Mississippi, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, and Georgia. Domestic perlite encounters transportation disadvantages in some areas of the eastern United States compared to perlite imported from Greece. However, western U.S. perlite exports to Canada offset this in large part, and net import reliance for perlite is about 3% of domestic consumption. Perlite grab samples were tested at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Minerals Resources (NMBMMR) for their basic suitability in horticulture, construction, filter aids, and fillers/extenders using Perlite Institute techniques modified by the NMBMMR. Most commercial perlite ranged from 2.5 to 3.0 wt.% bound water for all major types (classical, granular, and pumiceous). Expanded density varied widely, but the lowest density of 1.9 lbs/ft3 was for granular. Average brightness of expanded perlite was 47.6 to 69.3%. Nonexpansibles, commonly obsidian or "dead" perlite, ranged from 18 wt.% to less than 1 wt.%, with granular perlte generally the lowest. Compacted density was not related to either perlite type or nonexpansibles present. Sieve analyses of the -50+100 mesh product showed that, in general, pumiceous perlite produces more fines and classical and granular perlite average 60 to 80% -30+100 mesh after expansion. Samples were tested for crystalline silica that ranged from below the detection limit of 0.5 wt.% to nearly 0.2 wt.%, but most tested below 0.5 wt.%. Although quartz content can be lowered in the expanded product by the expansion process, producers can further lower crystalline silica in the product by mixing low-quartz crude with high-quartz perlite before expansion. Chemical analysis by x-ray fluorescence confirms the rhyolitic composition of perlite, but indicates that surface weathering may increase the concentration of some elements, such as potassium and calcium, by infilling cracks or fissures developed during or after perlite emplacement.

A sulfur concrete technology has been developed by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, in which chemically modified sulfur is utilized with suitable mineral aggregates to produce construction materials which are resistant to corrosion by acids and salts. This report presents a summary of the basic technology and results of testing the materials under actual operating conditions in 50 corrosive environments in 40 commercial plants. After 4 years of testing, there was essentially no evidence of material degradation or loss of strength. Regular concrete materials were attacked and in some cases completely destroyed under the same conditions. Testing is continuing to establish ultimate longevity and durability of the sulfur concretes. The materials are finding widespread applications in metallurgical, chemical, and fertilizer processing plants.

"As underground mining continues to operate at deeper depths and in more complex geologic and geometric conditions, there has been an increased demand for mine designs to better reflect site-specific conditions, measurements, and observations with respect to ground control safety and stability. During the past 20 years, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed, validated and distributed a number of free software packages (ALPS, ARMPS, AMSS, ARBS, etc.) specifically aimed at providing the industry with ground control design tools for the evaluation of underground stability in coal mines. While these programs were initially developed as stand-alone software packages where all data reside on an individual or workgroup computer, modern day web applications have begun to migrate toward a “multiple-tier” architecture, allowing multiple users to access an application by means of an Internet connection.This article introduces a new Web-based platform for ground control software applications, webGroundControl (webGC). webGC provides users with a platform through which one can access NIOSH and other ground control design software utilizing a Webbased, multiple-tier architecture. This provides users with easy access to ground control designs, the ability to perform on-demand calculations, as well as increase online collaboration between operational personnel and engineers through a web server. The basic framework and, more specifically, the user-interface of webGC are defined and outlined within this paper. It is expected that the mining industry will rapidly embrace this new product and webGroundControl will be a new paradigm for mining engineering computer applications. Platform architectureAs Web-based computing technologies continue to advance and cloud computing gains momentum, web-based platforms for software applications are growing in popularity across all industries due to ease of product accessibility and distribution as well as data security. With the expansion of Internet connectivity on the surface and underground, there is an industry need to develop Internet-based applications for mine and ground control design (Barczak et al., 2016). Cloud-based products are already available for many industries and are slowly being developed for the mining and geotechnical industry. A notable example is the drillysis package, which is a cloud-based borehole logging database (Geosysta, 2017) or the Dynonobel package for on the fly blasting calculations (Dyno Nobel, 2013)."

"Technical advances in longwall mining over the last several years have resulted in much larger and faster shearers that have the capability of mining at speeds over 100 ft./min. This has resulted in a substantial increase in the amount of dust that is generated at the shearer and during shield advances. Meanwhile, increased underground coal production has put a greater demand on longwall dust control systems as some operators have had difficulty maintaining consistent compliance with federal dust standards. To address this need, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health [NIOSH] is investigating the effectiveness of a water spray manifold mounted on the tailgate end of the shearer body. The sprays are oriented parallel to the tailgate ranging arm, and these sprays create a water curtain confining the dust plume near the face, preventing the dust from drifting into the walkway. This redirection of dust provides a clean air envelope for the tailgate shearer operator and jacksetters working near the tailgate drum. Three different tailgate spray manifold designs were tested and evaluated at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research [OMSHR] Pittsburgh Longwall Test Facility. Manifolds were equipped with hollow cone or flat fan water spray nozzles and evaluated at three face air velocities (500, 700, and 900 fpm) and at water pressures of 100, 150, and 200 psi. Reductions in dust concentrations were observed at six face sampling locations for all the tailgate manifold systems at each of the tested spray pressures and face velocities. Based on results from the laboratory tests showing reductions in dust concentrations at sampling locations downwind of the shearer a spray manifold was fabricated and evaluated at an underground operation. INTRODUCTION In 2012, underground coal mining in the United States produced a total of 342 million short tons, with longwall mining accounting for over 53% of this production [EIA 2013]. The longwall mining industry continues to see remarkable and significant improvements in longwall mining equipment and mining practices. Average shift production during compliance dust sampling has increased from 3,500 tons per shift in 1994 to approximately 6,000 tons per shift in 2012. A dramatic decrease in working longwall faces from 80 to 49 has occurred over the same period [Fiscor 2013]. Factors specific to longwall mines that supported productivity improvement include: higher capacity shearers, improved shield hydraulics and control, higher horsepower for equipment, wider face conveyors, and larger faces. Today, the average face width has increased to 1,188 ft., with one longwall operation reporting a face width of 1,650 ft. compared to an average of 750 ft. in 1994 [Fiscor 2009, 2014]. Panel lengths in 2013 averaged 11,307 ft. compared to 7,000 ft. in 1994. Overall production from U.S. longwalls has increased by nearly four percent from 2007 to 2012 with over 182 million tons mined annually [EIA 2013]. Given the volume and rate of coal produced on longwall faces, the potential to generate large quantities of respirable coal mine dust also exists."

INTRODUCTION High in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, some 50 airline miles (80 km) northeast of Fresno, and near the John Muir Wilderness and Kings Canyon National Park, a large underground hydroelectric project is under construction. Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) Company's 1,125 MW Helms Pumped Storage Project exhibits a number of impressive statistics, unusual features, and other characteristics of interest to the tunneling or power plant designer and construction contractor. The most significant underground facilities include almost 20,000 ft (6,096 m) of 27-ft (8.2 m) diam concrete-lined pressure tunnel; 3,700 ft (1,128 m) of access tunnel; 1,600 ft (488 m) of steel-lined high-pressure conduit, 2 major underground chambers more than 1,000 ft (305 m) below ground; 3 deep vertical shafts, and one steep inclined shaft. Maximum static pressures within the conduits range from 200 ft (61 m) to 1,744 ft (532 m), with hydraulic transients that increase pressure to 2,500 ft (762 m). The purpose of these underground works is to provide 475,000 hp (354,350 KW) of water power to each of the 3 reversible pump-turbines, each connected to a 375 MW generator motor. The units, rated at 1,744 ft (532 m) maximum static head, are among the world's front-runners, considering the size-head combination. The Helms Project develops the existing power drop between two of PG&E's reservoirs, Courtright Lake and Lake Wishon. These reservoirs are retained by two concrete-faced rockfill dams completed in 1958, each storing approximately 125,000 acre ft (154 x 106 m3) of water. Digital systems have been employed in industry as an aid in process evaluation and control for about 20 years. The earlier systems were quite simple and did little more than periodically scan a multitude of process variables, perhaps comparing them to alarm limits, and print out the results. As time passed, the needs of industry and the imagination of process engineers became more demanding. Rather than perform only alarm checking and logging, operating guides were generated to help the operator gain optimum performance from the process. Eventually, systems were entrusted with the job of manipulating the set points of the local analog control loops in a (DDAC) digitally directed analog control mode. Today digital systems are used to gather all-the process information, including both analog and digital variables; to make the necessary data manipulations; and to control the process end elements in a (DDC) direct digital control mode. During these years of transition from the very simplest systems to the complex systems of today, the demands upon the system engineer have been every increasing. The process engineer has required, among other things, more computational ability at high speeds, faster input and output rates, greater flexibility, better communication facilities (man-machine interface), (process oriented software), and finally, greater reliability at lower cost.

In 1986 the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) embarked on a major research effort to develop technology that can substantially reduce worker exposure to face hazards simply by relocating the equipment operators to an area of relative safety. This reduced exposure mining system (REMS) research effort enhances the USBM ongoing health and safety research efforts to reduce and control dust and noise and to reduce accidents through training and better mining practices. This paper reports progress of the research that is developing and will demonstrate the technologies required for the computer-assisted tele-remote operation of continuous mining machines, haulage systems, and roof bolting machines.

The size and depth of the ore bodies and their mineralogy dictate the types of products manufactured and the mining and processing methods which must be employed. The geology of the major deposits is well known and will be but briefly discussed The major emphasis will be placed upon the past history of the districts, the size and depth and configurations of the ore bodies, the ore mineralogy, and how all of these factors govern the types of mining and processing operations which may be employed in each of the districts.

Most statistical measures of mineral exploration continued downward in 1986. Prospects in 1987, however, appear to have brightened for exploration as the overall economic health of the mineral industry improved. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) survey of US and Canadian firms documents the marked decline in US mineral exploration since the early 1980's. From 1981 through 1986, the total exploration expenditure by US firms declined by more than 73% (Fig. 1). Exploration expenditures by US firms declined by 66%%. US based professional exploration staffs were slashed by 70% (Fig. 2). Also, many firms have written off some reserves because of weak markets or have not delineated new reserves to replace production. The Canadian government reported that between 1981 and 1986 Canadian molybdenum re¬serves had declined by 30%, lead and zinc reserves by 20%, and nickel and copper reserves by 15%. The SEG survey also shows the immediate impact of the decline in the dollar on US exploration expenditures abroad. Between 1981 and 1986 the share of the exploration dollar spent by US firms outside of the country declined by nearly one-half and exploration acreage abroad declined by 69%. The downward trend of the last six years may finally be near the end as a leaner and more efficient minerals industry starts to gear up for a period of increased activity. An industry survey reported to Mine Development Bimonthly (Metals Economics Group) indicates that mining firms were expected to increase exploration expenditures in 1987 by at least 10% above 1986 levels. Worldwide expenditures for 1987 by companies covered by the report were expected to top $800 million. It is the first time since 1984 that an increase in exploration expenditures was expected. Also, the US Bureau of Land Management reported a 30% increase in new mining claims for fiscal year 1987 over fiscal year 1986. The bulk of the increase in claims was in states having intense gold exploration, particularly Washington and Oregon. Much of the optimism is undoubtedly due to the increases in metal prices that occurred in 1987. Some of these increases include gold, average price up about 20%; copper, average price up 24%; aluminum, average price up 26%; and nickel, average spot price up 20%. The SEG survey shows precious and base metals accounting for 89% of the exploration expenditures in the US in 1986, up 52% from 1981. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that 80% of US exploration activity in 1986 was directed entirely at gold (1986 Minerals Yearbook). Worldwide exploration plans indicate the continued dominance of gold exploration. New programs were announced for Ghana, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Major new exploration programs were also launched for lead-zinc sulfides in Morocco, platinum and palladium in northwest Brazil, rare earth minerals in Greenland, diamonds in Indonesia, and heavy minerals off-shore Australia. In this paper, the logic and the capabilities of a long term production planning method for open pit mining are presented. The method is the first attempt in obtaining simultaneous solutions to the four interrelated parameters of open pit mining; 1) the mine life, 2) the specific blocks to be mined each year, 3) the amount of ore and waste to be mined each year, and 4) the ultimate pit limits. An efficient cutoff grade can also be obtained through a sensitivity analysis. None of the existing methods can bring such a comprehensive solution to the problem. A production plan for a real life gold deposit is given to illustrate the logic and the capabilities of the method.

AVAILABLE MACHINES Machines discussed in this section include only rubber tire mounted kerf cutting machines of a self¬propelled electrically powered design. Such machines handle bars up to 4.6 m (15 ft) in length, cutting kerfs of from 115 to 191 mm (4.5 to 7.5 in.). The basic design concept of all machines currently in production is very similar. The chassis features dual driving wheels on the cutter-bar end, fixed directly to the main frame. The steering wheels on the outby end of the frame are articulated in some manner to keep all four wheels on the floor over uneven bottom. Machine power for tramming, and all other functions except powering the cutting chain, is furnished from a pump motor that drives the specific pump or pumps required by a given machine. The cutter chain is driven through a mechanical drive train from a separate electric motor having no duty other than driving the chain. The general arrangement of a cutting machine is shown in Fig. 1; two types of machines, with their specifications are shown in Figs. 2 through 5. A hydraulically powered cable normally is included to eliminate the need for manual cable handling and make this a one-man machine. A bug duster, though optional, is needed for most applications. The bug duster is an hydraulically driven scroll conveyor located directly behind the cutter chain drive sprocket. Its function is to move the cuttings away from the sprocket to prevent them from packing up in this area and consuming a lot of machine power to further pulverize them. Available machines vary from models 610 mm (24 in.) high that can cut horizontally only from 203 mm (8 in.) below ground line to 229 mm (9 in.) above, to machines 1143 mm (45 in.) high that can cut in any plane from 178 mm (7 in.) below the ground line to 3.7 m (12 ft) above it. Most currently manufactured machines fall in the 17 200 to 20 400 kg (38,000 to 45,000 lb) weight range, but can be dis¬assembled for underground installation where weight and size are a problem. Maximum teardown results in all pieces having a weight of 5400 kg (12,000 lb) or less and a size allowing passage through a 1.2 x 2.1-m (4x7-ft) opening. Further reduction in either size or weight of the parts becomes a serious problem. Machines currently being manufactured are avail¬able for use with power supplies of 250 v dc; 500 v dc; 440, 550, or 950 v ac (60 Hz). Also available are machines for use on 415, 500, and 950 v 50 Hz. De¬signs to allow operation on other voltages of either 50 or 60 Hz can be made available without any serious problems. As of September 1977, a typical medium-seam ma¬chine without the extra options needed for unusual conditions, but fully equipped to operate, was selling for about $185,000. "A lot of incorrect, dangerous and misleading statements about the effect of CO2 on the human body can still be found in the internet, the media and in books. It is a fact that already low concentrations can lead to critical reactions, higher concentrations cause a narcosis. The real effect is not a lack of oxygen but an inner suffocation. The breathing reflex is decreased and the transport of oxygen in the blood is reduced due to a low pH value of the blood. Furthermore a reduced oxygen content in the air can also lead to the failure of diesel engines. MOTIVE Different gases can appear in active mines as well in abandoned mines, adits and caves. The most dangerous gases are CO, NO/NO2, H2S, SO2, CH4 and CO2. Although the general danger arising from these gases is mostly known some aspects are underestimated. Furthermore misleading or wrong statements exist about the detection and the effect of gases on the human body. This is especially true for CO2. In the last years a couple of accidents happened with a great number of injured persons and unfortunately also some fatalities. As a result wrong information and comments about the effect of CO2 have been published in the media. A huge unexpected CO2 outburst in a potash mine showed again some additional problems and limits for rescue troops. ORIGIN OF CO2 AND MISLEADING STATEMENTS ABOUT THE EFFECT ON THE HUMAN BODYCarbon dioxide can appear as free gas in the earth crust. It is especially known in significant concentrations in some potash deposits, in hard coal mines and some caves. Furthermore it can be formed due to complete oxidation of carbon. It can appear in technical processes. It is also used for or in technical processes, as fire extinguishing agent, as cooling agent, it is contained (added) in sparkling water or other soft drinks and it is formed by fermentation processes. Up to today a lot of wrong information about the effect of CO2 on the human body is published or is still in the mind of many people and unfortunately even in the mind of members or leaders of rescue troops. On August 16th 2008 a faulty CO2 extinguishing installation in the city of Mönchengladbach/Germany caused the injury of 107 people and the evacuation of further 150 people /1/. People on the streets became unconsciousness and felt down. Fortunately all could be rescued due to the immediate rescue operation of local fire fighters. Furthermore the CO2 concentration on the ground was diminished by help of a helicopter. What could have happen with the engine will be discussed later. After 6 days a second similar accident took place /2/. In the news members of the rescue teams explained that CO2 leads to suffocation due to a lack of oxygen. This is wrong! Also cave explorers often say that a burning candle can detect a low oxygen and/or high Carbon dioxide content in the air. This is also wrong and deadly dangerous! Similar statements we find nowadays in the internet /3, 4 and many other/. In a forum “science and mathematics > chemistry” several people say that winegrowers go with a candle into the vine-cellar to detect CO2 /5/. Again: this can be deadly! Originally constructed in the 1930s, the 1-mile-long Sumner Tunnel is 31 feet in diameter and carries traffic deep below Boston Harbor, connecting Boston and East Boston. This project includes both design and construction for the rehabilitation of the nearly 100-year-old tunnel. The primary work includes repairing advanced deterioration at the tunnel crown with new precast arches that will add protection and strengthening. The restoration also consists of upgrading the tunnel systems, including permanently removing 75% of the existing exhaust duct suspended over the roadway to improve the overall ventilation system capacity and performance.

Configuration of Rozelle Interchange Project’s ventilation system required design and construction of some of the largest and tallest underground civil caverns attempted in Australia. The paper focuses on the technical challenges of designing these caverns within a heterogeneous, generally weak sandstone under highstress conditions while providing a construction sequence that would align with the contractor’s preferred techniques and schedule. Various construction techniques were investigated, but ultimately an observational approach relying on a construction sequence and specialized instrumentation met both the designer’s and contractor’s requirements. Relevant data obtained from excavations and the construction monitoring program are presented within.
