This paper covers several points of interest to mine engineers and planners involved in evaluating or conducting geostatistical coal reserve estimates. In particular, the ability to optimize borehole drilling locations and minimize drilling costs is addressed. Also discussed is the concept of confidence intervals for estimated coal characteristics obtained through geostatistical estimates and their importance in decision-making for mine planners. Finally, a discussion is presented on how geostatistics enables identification of invalid data points and actually forces strict attention to data editing and proper geologic interpretation.

Asbestos production in the United States is no match for the vast operations of Canada and the U.S.S.R. The majority of U.S. production is limited to the states of Vermont, California and Arizona, and the type of asbestos is limited to the variety of serpentine known as chrysotile. What little production of other varieties of asbestos such as tremolite and anthophyllite that has occurred over the past 100 years since asbestos became a useful commodity is of practically no significance. However, new developments in the field of environmental and occupational health hazards has startled the mining industry in this country and has already given a few particular companies reason to be concerned about the profitability and probability of their continued operation in the business of mineral processing. At the heart of these developments is the question and controversy over just what constitutes asbestos and what exactly is the definition of a fiber. To the mineralogist or, in fact, to practically anyone engaged in the process of mining and separating minerals there is little or no question about asbestos. It is not a distinct mineral but rather a commercial product serving specific applications for which a number of fibrous mineral types can qualify. To the hygienist pr health authority this definition is too general. They demand something they can detect, measure and control. To suit their purposes and simplify their task of detection, they have labelled the minerals chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, tremolite, anthoph-yllite and actinolite as asbestos, and any particle of these minerals with an aspect ratio of 3:1 as an asbestos fiber. The use of clay granules as carriers for pesticides dates from the early 1940's and by the present day represents a business conservatively estimated at between 200 - 300 thousand tons / year in the U.S. alone. Aside from economic and specific target pest efficacy advantages, the use of clay granules as pesticide carriers also delivers a number of environmental benefits which will be reviewed. Topics to be discussed will include: 1) drift control (versus liquid sprays), 2) mobility (in the environment), 3) worker safety, and 4) transportation (spill) safety.

An extensive geotechnical monitoring program was used to assess ground and liner behavior, provide input to a Disputes Review Board, and verify design assumptions during construction of the Mt. Baker Ridge Highway Tunnel along I-90 in Seattle, Washington. The stacked-drift tunnel liner was constructed with twenty-four 2.9 m diameter concrete-filled drifts forming a semi-flexible compression ring, followed by excavation of the 19.4 m diameter soil core. Instrumentation data was used for monitoring hillside stability, liner deflections and loads, impacts on adjacent highway tunnels, for back analyzing soil properties, and for helping to limit construction-induced settlements to about 6 cm.

Case studies are presented in this paper to illustrate the usefulness and applicability of using conditional simulation in under- ground coal mine planning. Conditional simulation is a technique developed in the last five years that allows the building of a simulated ore body (or coal deposit) model. Construction and validation of the simulated model is described in order to show how well the model reproduces the essential characteristics of the deposit. In the model, the thickness, ash, and sulfur content are known everywhere in the deposit and each variable has the same mean, variance, and spatial variability (variogram) as that variable has in the real deposit. Use of the simulated deposit in the design of drilling strategy for long range mine planning is demonstrated in me case study. Determining the potential of short term production scheduling to reduce the fluctuations of sulfur in run of mine coal is described in the second case study.

Introduction Mechanical classifiers consist of a settling tank with parallel sides and a sloping bottom equipped with a mechanism which continuously agitates the pulp and removes the settled solids. The functions served by mechanical classifiers include the following: (1) allow the particles larger than the desired size to settle in the tank and provide an overflow product with a minimum of oversize particles, (2) produce an overflow product of sufficiently high solids content to meet the requirements of the subsequent processing steps, (3) agitate the pulp and permit separation of the entrapped undersize particles so they can report in the overflow product, and (4) drain and remove the underflow solids from the settling pool. Various types of mechanisms have been used to agitate the pulp and remove the settled solids, which include: (I) endless belt and chain drags, (2) reciprocating rakes, (3) helical flights mounted on a rotating shaft which extends through the settling pool, (4) helical flights inside of a rotating drum which contains the classifier pool, (5) troughed conveyor belts forming the settling pool in the concave curve of the belt closely following the tail pulley, and (6) low-speed impellers agitating the underflow settled in the apex of cone-type mechanical classifiers.23 The principal use of mechanical classifiers has been in closed¬-circuit wet grinding; however, this application has been widely displaced over the past few decades by the hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone installation, including its feed pump, offers lower capital costs and requires less floor space. Nominally it produces an overflow prod¬uct of higher solids content, compared with a mechanical classifier, for comparable classification size up to 400µm (35 mesh). However, these advantages of the hydrocyclone are being gained at the sacrifice of some of the advantages of the mechanical classifier. The mechanical classifier requires less power and has lower maintenance costs than the hydrocyclone and its feed pump. The underflow product from the mechanical classifier can have a higher solids content and contain less entrapped undersize particles than the comparable product from the hydrocyclone. Consequently, it is capable of operating at a higher classification efficiency. A reduced circulating load24, 25 results under these conditions in a closed-circuit grinding application. Other applications for mechanical classifiers include desliming, dewatering, and washing operations. Sand-slime separation may be achieved using one or more stages of mechanical classifiers. Typical applications would include washing and deslimining of concrete aggre¬gate or sand; glass sand; abrasives; oyster shells; phosphate rock; iron, nickel, and chromium ores; alumina; zeolites; solar salt; and precipitates from chemical processing. As an example for the latter, Bitzer26 recommended the use of mechanical classifiers for countercur¬rent cementation-in-pulp of copper from the leach liquor. Similarly, mechanical classifiers are used in uranium processing27 for separation of the barren sands from the pregnant leach solution. Depending on the particle size and the effectiveness of the sand¬slime separation, the sand product from mechanical classifiers may be drained to solids content approaching 84%. Thus, mechanical classifiers are frequently used as dewatering equipment for various applications, such as: 1) Make a product having suitable solids content for subsequent transport by belt conveyor. 2) Provide a drained product to reduce cost of drying. 3) Provide a drained, washed, heavy sand product for return to the circuit. 4) Recover fine values from dilute plant effluents from coal, sand, phosphate-rock, and iron-ore washing plants and from steel-mill flue¬dust scrubbers. 5) Drain residual reagents of a preceding process stage prior to conditioning with reagents of different characteristics, e.g., cationic¬anionic flotation of phosphate rock, iron ore, etc. Design and Operating Features The proper selection of mechanical classification equipment re¬quires that the properties of the solids and liquid are adequately de¬fined. The following descriptive information regarding the solids is desired: feed rate, chemical and physical composition, density, tem¬perature, size analysis, and desired separation size. For the liquid used, the following data would be needed: feed rate, density, viscosity, pH, and temperature. Settling Area. The pool area required to permit a particle larger than the separation size to settle depends on the density and shape of the particle and on the density and viscosity of the pulp within the classifier pool. These criteria of the solids and pulp determine the settling rate which, in turn, determines the settling area required. Determination of the settling rate by long-tube batch tests can be used to calculate the settling area. A theoretical approach for estimat¬ing the settling area requirements is discussed in Chapter 1, Classifica¬tion Theory. This procedure can be used when neither test data nor empirical data from similar operations are available. Data on settling-area requirements and settling rates have been compiled by the manufacturers of mechanical classifiers. The approxi¬mate settling area required for a particular separation size can be estimated by using the curve shown in Fig. 65. This curve applies for closed-circuit grinding applications. For dilute velocity classification in open circuit, desliming, the length of the overflow weir, W, multiplied by the weir's mean distance from the feed opening, E, is used as the design criterion, instead of the settling area, in sizing the classifier. The area requirements, W X E, for dilute velocity classification can be expressed in terms of volumetric flow, Q, and settling rate, Rs, as follows: W x E = Q/(18.06 Rs) where W and E are feet, Q is gallons per minute, and Rs is inches per second. Overflow Weir. The hydraulic head, and thus the velocity at which the overflow crests the overflow weir, is one of the factors controlling the particle size of classification. Consequently, the length of the overflow weir must be designed to provide the overflow velocity which allows the particles larger than the desired size of classification to settle in the working area of the pool. This paper deals with drilling large diameter shafts for the mining and construction industry with diameters in excess of 3 feet to more than 20 feet in diameter. It discusses appropriate applications of the rotary drill method, linings for large diameter shafts, circulation systems,, and the limitations of the method. Each specific rotary drill method is determined by the geology of the area, the depth to be drilled and the formation fluids encountered. Shaft lining or casing must be improved to result in lighter weight, higher strength and lower cost. All phases of rotary drilling equipment must be improved to drill shafts in excess of 10 feet in diameter. As these goals are reached, more shafts of large diameter will be drilled by the rotary method for the mining and construction industry.

Except in a few special cases, it is necessary for solid fuel direct reduction in rotary kilns that iron-bearing materials be charged with a minimum grainsize of approx. 5 mm. For fines not usable in such form, the combination of sintering - as agglomeration step - and direct reduction were investigated. During reduction of sinter in rotary kilns prevail dependencies on sinter quality and varying reaction parameters, owing to the use of different coals, which led to a definite statement as to what quality sinter must have and which coals can be used.

Significant resources grading less than about 1 % nickel occur in magmatic sulfide deposits of two types. In the Mt. Keith type, extensive zones of disseminated nickel sulfides occur in the central portions of certain synvolcanic dunite-peridotite sills of komatiitic affinity in Archean greens tone terranes. In the Duluth type, disseminated copper-nickel sulfides occur near the basal margins of intrusions of flood basaltic affinity associated with intracontinental rifting. In both types, the parent magmas became saturated with sulfide following the onset of fractional crystallization and the separation of the immiscible sulfide melt was accompanied by the precipitation of a relatively large proportion of silicates. The abundant silicate crystals impeded the coalescense and accumulation of the sulfide droplets with the resulting formation of large but low grade deposits.

Perlite is a hydrated acid volcanic glass that has been derived from the alteration of obsidians through incorporation of water into the silica structure. It is distinguished from other members of the water-bearing natural glass family by total water content, characteristic fracture and luster. The distribution of major occurrences worldwide is associated with silicic Tertiary through early-mid Quaternary volcanics related to plate movement. The No Agua dome and flow complex is one of the most highly studied perlite occurrences in the world. It clearly exhibits lithologic and textural zonations that reflect simple cooling history. Similar features are commonly observed within other perlitized, extrusive glass selvages. This paper briefly discusses current thought regarding geologic occurrence, the hydration process and the modes of origin with special emphasis on No Agua.

An investigation of several trace elements distributed among sulfide minerals from deposits located in the southeastern United States was conducted. The deposits investigated are distributed within both the Blue Ridge Province and the Piedmont Province, which are contiguous geographic provinces. Twenty five deposits were examined;' eleven in the Blue Ridge Province and fourteen in the Piedmont Province. Figure 1 shows the locations of deposits investigated. In the deposits investigated, the mineral phases examined were pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. These phases were chosen because of their relatively widespread occurrence, although no pyrrhotite was seen in the Piedmont Province. A total of 116 polished surfaces of ores were prepared, and mineral phases were collected from these surfaces for analysis. Samples were analyzed for cobalt, nickel, manganese, lead, tin, chromium, molybdenum, and gold. A total of 372 analyses were made. Trace elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry following standard procedures. In this study, trace elements are defined as those elements which are present in the mineral but which do not affect the chemical formula for that mineral. Lead is considered as a trace element only in ores where little or no lead sulfide could be identified as a distinct mineral phase.

"So many talks, so little time.One of the toughest challenges associated with attending the SME Annual Conference and Expo is deciding how to allocate one’s resources. After accounting for keynote and plenary sessions, committee meetings, networking events, luncheons and exhibits, attending even one of the 109 technical sessions and more than 600 technical paper presentations can be a labor of love. Many, however, managed to make it to many of the sessions, including the mineral and metallurgical processing technical session on solvent extraction, ion exchange and electrowinning.At one point, that room was seated to near capacity, with a considerable number of the audience members standing by the walls at the back. Brittany Valera of Freeport-McMoRan Inc. was one who came early and enjoyed the session in its entirety. "Everything was pretty exciting," she said. "I really liked the modular plants. I think the future of mining, just like what we talked about in there, lies in thinking about things like remote locations, lifetimes of plants, anything that would be reusable and sustainable; and lower-cost and user-friendly would be really beneficial."Michael Moats, associate professor of metallurgical engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, started off the session by presenting on behalf of post-doctoral student Alex Luyima, who, like many before him, had been snapped up by industry and is now working for a secondary-metals refining company in Texas. Their team studied the nucleation and growth mechanism of copper on stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate in the absence and presence of chloride ions and three commercial organic additives: Hydrostar 4208, DXG-F7 and Cyquest N-900. Currenttime data were analyzed using known models, with reference to scanning electron microscope images. Good agreement was achieved between the models and SEM micrographs of deposits at a commercially relevant current density of 30 mA/ cm2. The addition of 20 mg/L chloride was found to increase the size and reduce the number of nuclei. The addition of 2.5 mg/L of each additive did not change the mechanism, but all three reduced the size and increased the number of nuclei, leading to more uniform coverage of the substrate with smoother deposits produced in twohour electrowinning experiments. N-900 had the best deposition coverage while DXG-7 was the easiest to dissolve."

One of the prime objectives of the mine industry is to develop a low cost way to clean up what has been called "The Rape Of Mother Nature". The project falls under the broad umbrella of reclamation, which is now considered an essential part of the mining cycle. As such, it is being given full consideration in the initial planning of all surface operations. In most areas, if a proposed mining system does not lend itself to proper reclamation, it is not an acceptable system. By combining mining and reclamation plans, a producer not only can minimize reclamation costs, but can also restore the land to usefulness and insure continuing profits after a deposit is depleted. As long as fifteen years ago, many of the larger mining companies were already deeply involved in this extra cost work. Even then the involved companies were projecting a great need for a bigger bulldozer, Bigger than anything commercially available. At that time, the D9 tractor weighed about 60,000# bare weight.

BACKGROUND Gold Fields Mining Corporation started their Chimney Creek operation in late 1987. The dump leaching operations commenced in October and the mill startup took place during the last half of November. The milling process at Chimney Creek is almost a conventional CIP plant with the major exception being the installation of a second thickener as a washing stage prior to CIP12 ' A simplified flow sheet is shown in FIGURE 1. Most of the gold in the mill is liberated by grinding in cyanide. After grinding in a conventional SAGball sill circuit, the cyclone overflow reports to the thickeners. The thickener overflow from the first thickener is pumped through 5 stages of carbon columns for gold adsorption. Slurry from the thickener underflow is leached, washed, re-thickened and pumped to CIP. After approximately 6 hours of retention time in CIP, the slurry is pumped to tailings for final deposition. The carbon from CIP is transferred to the third stage of carbon adsorption and then advanced as normal through the columns and strip circuit. Loaded carbon is stripped at approximately 1500C (3000 F) and 55 kPa (80 psi). After 4-5 hours of stripping, the grade of four tons of carbon is reduced from 5,140-6,860 g/t (150¬200 oz/ton) to typically 17 g/t (0.5 oz/ton). Zinc precipitation is used to recover the gold from the pregnant solution. After a water wash, the stripped carbon is transferred to acid wash or to the kiln feed tank for reactivation. All strip lots are acid washed in 3.0% HC1 and all stripped carbon passes through the kiln for thermal reactivation. Then the carbon is quenched, sized and stored in tanks or bins for transferral to CIP or to the carbon columns. Loaded carbon from the dump leach circuit is treated in a circuit consisting of five carbon columns which are parallel to the mill circuit. No distinction is made between the mill or dump leach carbon once the gold has been stripped from them. CARBON FINES HANDLING Once the carbon has been transferred from the carbon columns, every effort is made to minimize carbon attrition and to recover the carbon fines that have been generated in the process. Two types of airflow splitting methods for improving longwall dust control were investigated by NIOSH's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. These methods included a translucent mesh barrier and a staged spray barrier system to confine the shearer-generated dust to the coal extraction side of the long wall face while maintaining a cleaner split of airflow on the opposing worker walkway side of the longwall face. The translucent mesh barrier was shown to provide notable dust control effectiveness up to 60 m downstream of the shearer in both the laboratory experiments and a long wall field evaluation, provided the mesh barrier remains relatively parallel to the airflow. The staged spray barrier system showed marginal dust control effectiveness in the laboratory and subsequently was not field tested.

Automatic tripper control systems can be reliable and as such are suitable for use in the mining industry. Proper application of fundamental engineering principles provides the means for the reliability. Some of the principles are: (1) Be sure the system designer designs a system that does the job operations people want done; (2) Use sound logic design practices to avoid internal electrical problems; (3) The design must be maintenance oriented; and (4) Use good quality components. I would like to discuss a tripper control installation at Kennecott Copper Corporation, Chino Mines Division, in Hurley, New Mexico, and how these principles apply to this tripper control system. First, however, I will expand on the principles to clarify just what is meant. First, "Be sure the system designer designs a system that does the job operations people want done.? Operator acceptance is often the key to the success or failure of an automatic control system. One of the best ways I know of to get operator acceptance is to give him a system that he wants. I don't mean to imply that if bad practices or procedures exist that they should be incorporated in the control system. I do think that many designers feel they haven't done their job if the control system doesn't do things drastically different than the old manual method. Good engineering principles dictate that the job should be done right and if the manual method was right it can very likely be right for the automatic method.

At the termination of mining, the quality of ground water in the ore-zone aquifer must be returned to a condition predetermined by the permitting agency. To immobilize the redox-sensitive elements (e.g., uranium, arsenic, selenium, molybdenum), it has been suggested that a reducing agent be circulated through the leached ore zone. We have conducted laboratory experiments to test the ability of sodium sulfide as such a reducing agent. Sodium sulfide lowered the redox potential of the effluent such that insoluble minerals containing the redox-sensitive elements should be stable. The uranium concentration of the solution decreased by more than three orders of magnitude. In column experiments, by the time ten pore volumes of the sulfide solution had flowed through, sulfide minerals were forming. The experimental results indicate that the addition of sodium sulfide should cause the chemical reduction of the leached sediments, thereby producing long-term stability of the ground-water/sediment system.

Peña Colorada is a company dedicated to the exploration, exploitation, and beneficiation of iron ore, serving the national steel industry. Established in 1975 as a stateowned enterprise, it transitioned to operating as a private organization in 1991. It is jointly owned by two investors, ArcelorMittal and Ternium, each holding a 50% stake. The mining operation is situated in the municipality of Minatitlan, in the northwestern part of the state of Colima, Mexico (Figure 1). It comprises an open pit mine and a concentrator, covering an area of approximately 2,300 hectares. The pellet mill is in the town of Manzanillo, Colima state, a port on the Pacific coast, about 46 km southwest of the mine. The pellet mill occupies its own property with a total area of 60.4 hectares. A gravity-driven concentrated slurry pipeline connects the mine and the pelletizing plant, located at an average elevation of 1,020 meters above sea level and 20 meters above sea level, respectively. Currently, Peña Colorada produces 4.1 million tons of pellets and 0.4 million tons of iron concentrate annually. In 2018, due to a change in the cutoff grade, the processing volume of the beneficiation plant increased from 9 million tons to 16 million tons annually. This led to a greater amount of information to process and characterize the ore extracted from the pit before its processing in the beneficiation plant. Consequently, Peña Colorada sought new ore control technologies to enhance ore selection, optimize human resources and data management, as well as minimize discrepancies between planning and execution. To ensure adherence to quality agreements with stakeholders, it is crucial to understand the ore characteristics before initiating mining activities.

This paper discusses the subject of "Improving Contracting Methods" from the owners point of view, particularly the public. An overview is given of the work of the U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and some apparent results of the implementation of these recommendations or lack thereof. Selected recommendations that are not being implemented are discussed as to the the desirability and the possible impact of their implementation. Impediments to acceptance of the recommendations are identified and solutions proposed. The difference in the flexibility, attitudes and approaches of owners, public, quasi-public and private, toward improving contracting methods are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the fact that the onus to improve is on the owner because they usually develop the contractual language or at least have the final decision on its content and are or should be an equal party to the contract during its administration.
