During the past ten years, the US coal industry has experimented with various ways to extract methane from coal seams. Drilling long horizontal boreholes in solid coal from mine workings and vertical gob degas boreholes are becoming standard techniques for methane recovery from coal seams. Prime motivations for such work have always been safety and productivity in mines, but the commercial value of gas so produced is encouraging utilization. The paper reviews various ways to produce methane from coal seams and discusses some utilization projects extant in the industry.

The Amtrak East River Tunnels include four tunnels, Line 1 to Line 4, which extend from New York Penn Station in Manhattan, under the East River to Sunnyside Yard in Long Island City. Since fall 2015, Amtrak has initiated a program to repair and reconstruct the century-old tunnels, including structural repairs of all the tunnels and reconstruction of the Line 1 and Line 2 tunnels. The reconstruction includes bench wall demolition and replacing and installing the following elements in the tunnels: direct fixation track, traction power, signal, communication, and tunnel fire/life/safety components. This paper provides design and site investigation challenges and knowledge gained from this program.

Colorado nahcolite deposits, estimated at 29 billion metric tons, formed in an asp metric permanent-lake basin whose waters were rich in algae and sulfate-reducing bacteria. Nahcolite (NaHCOg) occurs in oil shale of the Green River Formation (Eocene) as aggregates (62 percent), disseminated crystals (24 percent), and impure beds (14 percent). Because much of the nahcolite is nonbedded, it will be mined with oil shale and can be concentrated to marketable grade by crushing and screening Impurities in nahcolite are kerogen, quartz, pyrite, and carbonate minerals. A promising new market for nahcolite is in the process of removal of sulfur dioxide from industrial stack gases. When heated, nahcolite reacts with sulfur dioxide to form sodium sulfate. Differences in thermally induced microporosity may explain why nahcolite is more reactive than trona, a possible competitor with nahcolite for SO2 removal. Limited production of nahcolite at one or possibly two localities is expected in the next several years, but large-scale production is probably at least 10 years away.

Establishing suitable control of pH, a requirement in a number of mineral and chemical industries, poses a difficult problem because of inherent nonlinearities and frequently changing process dynamics. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed a technique for effectively controlling such systems. This technique successfully combines the process control capabilities of fuzzy logic and the search capabilities of genetic algorithms. Fuzzy logic offers an effective mechanism for handling nonlinearities, while genetic algorithms can provide fuzzy logic controllers with real-time adaptive capabilities. This Bureau-developed technique is applied to a laboratory acid-base neutralization experiment. Nonlinearities in the laboratory system are associated with the logarithmic pH scale and the changing process dynamics are due to alterations in pH and buffering capacity input solutions. Results indicate fuzzy logic controllers augmented with genetic algorithms offer a powerful alternative to conventional process control techniques in such nonlinear, rapidly changing systems.

Introduction Ventilation engineers have always felt somewhat uneasy when, in the normal course of their work, they are forced to consider the flow in any mine entry as "wholly rough." Under such conditions in pipes, friction factor is no longer a function of Reynolds' number. This assumption serves to simplify the problem and overcome an evident lack of information concerning the variability of K-factors. During the summer of 1985, a unique opportunity to investigate the reaction of friction factor to changing flow rates presented itself. A Utah coal mine was temporarily directing a substantial airflow through a single entry. By regulating the quantity, it would be possible to obtain a wide range of Reynolds' numbers in an entry composed of two distinct coal thicknesses. This paper describes the conducted study. The theory covering basic fluid flows in pipes that led to the questioning of constant K-factor is presented first. Experimental procedures are then described, including the use of a view camera in determining entry area and perimeter. Finally, a discussion of the observed variations in friction factor versus Reynolds' number is given. Changes of 34% and 45% in K-factor were seen in this study for the two entry heights. The implications of ignoring the relationship in this case and a call for an expanded research effort are also presented. Theory Since a gas is a fluid, the general principles of fluid mechanics are equally applicable to airflow in a mine entry as they are to the flow of water in a pipe. The Darcy equation is, therefore, equally applicable to pressure drop calculations in both situations. This famous formula was originally derived for use in circular cross sections and may be modified for any other shape by the use of hydraulic radius (defined as the area divided by the "wetted" perimeter). The Darcy equation relates the physical parameters of the pipe (diameter, length, and resistance to flow) and fluid velocity to the energy needed to create the flow. A study by Nikuradse (1933) brought to light the suspected dependency of the friction factor term in the Darcy equation upon Reynolds' number. By performing a large number of laboratory experiments, he established some basic concepts upon which other researchers built. Chief among these contributors was Colebrook (1939). Using commercial-grade pipe, he established an empirical relationship between Darcy's friction factor and Reynolds' number that is still in use today. If Colebrook's system of equations is plotted on log-log paper (as was done by Moody, 1944), the curves have some very distinct features. Of importance to the subject at hand is the relative response of friction factor to Reynolds' number at a given relative roughness. Simply stated, a pipe can appear to be either smooth or rough, depending on the flow conditions. As the Reynolds' number increases, the friction factor decreases at a decreasing rate until it becomes nearly a constant value. At this point, the flow is said to be "wholly rough." It is upon this condition that many traditional ventilation solution methods depend. For calculating pressure drops in a mine entry, Atkinson's equation is much more popular than the Darcy equation. Both of these formulas describe the same phenomenon and so have similar forms and functions. The K-factor in the Atkinson equation is equivalent to the Darcy friction factor and can be related by simply changing units, equating the pressure drops, and canceling like terms. A generalized form of this relationship is presented below as equation 1. K = yf/28,800g = [q]f/28,800 (1) where K is Atkinson's friction factor in kg/m3 (lb - min2/ft4), Y is the specific volume in Nt/m3 (lb per cu ft), p is the fluid density in kg/m3 (slugs per cu ft), g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s2 or 32.2 fpsz), and f is Darcy's friction factor, which is unitless. The objective behind Eq. 1 is to show the strong correlation between K and f. Since these two quantities differ only by a constant (q]/28,000), the assumed independence of K-factor and Reynolds' number is suspect in light of the known response of f. Unfortunately, the formulation does not provide information concerning the actual relationship, as entry geometry likely plays a major role in the response curve. Only an indirect indication that such a relationship might exist is provided. Previous work on this subject was performed by Thomas Falkie (1958). The study involved a laboratory model composed of sections of straight, steel duct and a range of Reynolds' numbers from 15,610 to 137,200. Results from this work show a variation in friction factor with Reynolds' number in much the same way as it was found to vary in pipes. Over the range of velocities examined, a decrease of approximately 38% in K-factor was observed. This previous experience provides additional incentives to investigate the phenomenon under field conditions. Past model studies done at the University of Utah by Ozukurt (1945), Biron (1944), and Greenhalgh (1942) present similar evidence of this variability. Mount Isa Mine should be regarded as a large mining complex rather than one mine. This arises from the geography, variety and extent of the orebodies, the mining methods, and the use of 14 shafts for ventilation distribution. A brief resume is presented here since comprehensive descriptions of lead-zinc mining methods {11}, copper mining methods {2 }{3}, geology 241, stope fill {5} and ventilation techniques {6}{7}, have all been published in the last five years. Mining extends over a north-south strike length of 2.5 miles (4 Ian) with a maximum width across dip approaching 3 200 ft (1 Ian). Current mining is to a depth of 3 150 ft (960 m) with the ore hoisting shafts extending 660 ft (200 m) deeper. The composite longitudinal section, Figure 1, shows a representational disposition of the copper and lead-zinc-silver orebodies in the central shaft complex where the main service and hoisting shafts are located. To the south the X41 man and materials shaft provides access to the copper area. The mine layout is typical of high tonnage track- less mines, utilising a large diesel fleet, raise- borers and some large diameter hole stope drilling. Mining methods include sublevel open stoping, slot and massfire, and a trial vertical crater retreat in the copper ore, and sublevel caving, sublevel open stopes with and without rib pillar recovery, and mechanised cut and fill in the numerous lead orebodies. All ore reports to one of the three crushing systems located below 19 level in the central shaft complex. Copper ore is hauled exclusively along the 19 level computer assisted Rockflo haulage system, and lead-zinc-silver ores report via central orepasses from Granby haulages on 13 level and 15 level. Tonnages hoisted during the 1977178 financial year were 5.0 million for copper at 3.2%. and 2.3 million for lead-zinc-silver at 7.8%. 6.3% and 7.06 oz/ton (216 g/tonne) respectively.

Kaiser Resources Ltd. operates a coal mining complex in Southeastern British Columbia. A large surface mine, a conventional underground mine, and an innovative hydraulic underground mine are presently in operation. The products of these mines are fed to the Elkview plant. This coal has to be prepared to 9. 5% ash and 6'o total moisture for export from the port of Roberts Bank near Vancouver, British Columbia to Japan at a rate of 4. 5 Mltpy. The moisture requirement for the coal product was recently increased to 8. 0% total moisture. The entire operation has been described in various publications (1), (2), (3). Details of the venture will not be repeated in this paper. In this paper we hope to describe the modifications made to the original coal preparation plant in order to satisfy market requirements for quality and quantity of coal.

Because of the competitive nature of the iron ore pelletizing industry, commodities required for the production of pellets are continually being scrutinized to minimize their usage and offset rapidly escalating costs. In the Tilden pellet plant, the usage of one commodity, bentonite, has been reduced from over twenty-four pounds per long ton of pellets to as low as eight pounds per long ton. The evolution of bentonite usage from plant start-up to the present time is described.

The title of this talk has brought some interesting responses - even before it was written - from different parts of the country. A geologist from the Western U. S, was deeply concerned with recent layoffs in his profession and the employment situation in general and wondered why "the AIME wasn't doing anything for the benefit of its members." A petroleum engineer in Texas said that a group in his field were studying "professionalism" and their professional status and wondered if there were any words of wisdom for him. A mining engineering professor from the East pointed out that the National Science Foundation did not include mining engineering as one of its recognized fields in one of its equipment funding programs. These are just a few examples of reactions received to date, but they serve to illustrate the broad image that the title has meant to various people. Actually the term profession is defined by Webster as "a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation." The word encroach means "to enter by gradual steps or by stealth into the possessions or rights of another", or "to advance beyond desirable or normal limits." The intention of this paper, as originally conceived and requested by the program chairman, was to combine those two words literally and talk about how the professional standing of mineral engineers is being eroded from people outside the profession. But the amazing preliminary response suggests that it may be timely to broaden the discussion by including some comments about professionalism in general. In the paper the terms "mineral engineer" or "mining engineering" are used frequently, but it should be clearly understood that much of what is said is valid and is intended for all fields covered by SME and perhaps for AIME in general.

Fly ash is a by-product generated by the combustion of coal in thermal power plants. Its disposal is a major environmental concern for these power plants. Though a considerable part of fly ash is used in cement making and brick manufacturing, a substantial quantity remains unutilized. Bentonite is commonly used as binder in the micropelletization of process waste to attain the mechanical strength required for handling and transportation. The present paper deals with the partial replacement of bentonite with fly ash in the micropelletization process without affecting the quality of the micropellets. The mechanisms of both the binders are discussed. The bonding of particles by bentonite is a physical mechanism, while fly-ash bonding is a chemical mechanism. Silica and alumina are the major constituents present in fly ash along with lime. In the presence of water, the alumino-silicates and unhydrated lime present in fly ash undergo a pozzolanic reaction and form cementitious bonds, which hold the particles together. Use of fly ash as alternative binder for bentonite has cost benefits besides providing a better utilization option for fly ash.

When a large area of open gob collapses suddenly, a windblast is produced that can cause considerable damage throughout the infrastructure of a mine. In a few cases, the windblast has been accompanied by ignitions of methane and/or coal dust. This paper describes the conduct and results of laboratory tests involving the compression of mixtures of air, methane and coal dust under a falling weight and while allowing controlled escape of the mixture. The transient responses on pressure and temperature sensors were recorded. In addition to an analysis of those records, the paper highlights those conditions in which ignitions occurred.

In June 2005 the Minerals Council of Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Australian Government which states an intention ?for mining companies and government to work together with Indigenous people to build sustainable, prosperous communities in which individuals can create and take up social, employment and business opportunities in mining regions?. Implementation of the MoU has begun with demonstration sites established across Australia. All sites are using a Regional Partnership Agreement (RPA) model as a framework for enabling local people to find local solutions to local issues in partnership with mining companies, governments and Indigenous communities. Mining and resources companies can provide important input into regional economic development and capacity building by working through local partnerships. Company benefits include gaining a social licence to operate, access to a reliable skilled workforce, better longterm relationships with Indigenous communities and sustainable regional communities. All levels of government, Australian, State and Local, are working collaboratively to address unemployment and other issues in remote Indigenous communities. The Australian Government has adopted RPAs as one mechanism for implementing its whole-of-government approach to Indigenous affairs. This leading edge work is unique to Australia and the model has applications and significant learning for other countries and industries.

Although the markets for coal in the United States have changed rapidly over the last three decades, the uses of coal, namely, to produce heat and power or coke have been left almost unchanged. The coke is used either as a chemical reducing agent alone or as a reducing agent and source of heat. Most of the heat and power markets for coal require no coal processing, although for more than 50 years, many proposals to skim the more valuable substances in coal before burning have been advanced. Thus, the only large tonnage market requiring processing of coal is high-temperature carbonization to make coke. At present, coal requires processing for some small markets, but for future potential large markets, such as gasification, conversion to liquid and gaseous fuels, and conversion to chemicals, coals will require more processing than is now being done.

Although there has been an increased interest in the electrokinetic properties of coal (1) research on the subject is still in an early stage of development (2,3,4,5,6,7) To the author's knowledge, no electrokinetic studies have been made on coal lithotypes - particularly anthracite lithotypes. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the double layer properties displayed at the anthracite/water interface (whole coal and lithotypes) as determined by streaming potential methods, It is hoped that this investigation and related future investigations will provide correlations from which the surface properties of any coal can be predicted and then related to surface dependent processes such as froth flotation and flocculation. Another aspect of this research, undertaken to determine the physical and chemical parameters necessary for anthracite lithotype differentiation, was previously published (8). The number of parameters involved, lithologic, organic and inorganic, and the wide divergence of these parameters within an individual coal limits the practical utilization of the results, however, the results are of value and of interest in guiding theoretical developments. Keeping the limitations in mind, the results are analyzed in terms of their application to froth flotation processes and are used to indicate the feasibility of making a lithotype separation by flotation.

Surface subsidence caused by underground longwall mining is a very complicated process in time and space, influencing building and structures on the surface of the mining area, including houses, pipelines, and highway. The field monitoring data of surface subsidence are essential for protecting them. This study investigated the dynamic and residual subsidence characteristics of both the surface and the highway over a 730-day monitoring period on a longwall panel. Three monitoring lines (Lines 1–3) were established to monitor the subsidence process, and three stages were identified: initial stage of surface subsidence, active period of surface subsidence, and residual subsidence deformation stage. The maximum subsidence value on the highway (1,786 mm) was smaller than that on the surface (2,094 mm), and the maximum subsidence velocity on the highway (41.7–50.8 mm/day) was also lower than that on the surface (66.7 mm/day). During the residual subsidence deformation stage, both the surface and highway subsidence velocities decreased to below 0.6 mm/day. Furthermore, differences in subsidence characteristics between the surface and the highway were analyzed, with the subsidence value on the highway always being less than that on the surface, while the subsidence velocity during the residual deformation stage was not always lower. This could be attributed to the influence of dynamic loads from vehicles, which could induce additional residual subsidence on the highway. Further investigation into this phenomenon will be conducted in future research.

High-pressure grinding rolls subject the feed material to pressures of 200 N/mm? During this process considerable size reduction and the Formation of flakes occur. This paper describes the basic consideration For design and operating of this type of mill. It is also shown that the particle size distribution resulting from this process is typical for grinding processes but untypical for crushing processes. High pressure grinding rolls are designed in size of up to 2.8 m roll diameter allowing feed material top sizes of 250 mm. The rigid frame, bearing and drive - train design allows a broad application of the high-pressure grinding rolls operating the machine in open or semi-closed and closed circuit for dry and moist feed materials. Operating results show that capacity increases of up to 100 % can be accomplished with this technology. The high-pressure grinding roll also, allows for lower operating and maintenance costs due to energy savings of up to 20 L and reduction of wear to less than 1 76 for dry and less than 0.1 5 for wet grinding. Other advantages of the high-pressure grinding rolls are smaller equipment sizes than a ball or SAG-mill for a given capacity resulting in lower building sizes with reduced capital in- vestment costs.

Finely sized Upper Freeport coals are beneficiated to reduce ash and sulfur using high-intensity magnetic separation to process both (1) raw, untreated coal as well as (2) raw coal which was pre-treated thermally with steam and air. Substantial, sulfur and ash reduction can be obtained using both approaches to magnetic beneficiation of coal fines, but evidence indicates that pre-treatment which would constitute a costly supplementary step is technically inferior to the direct beneficiation of raw, untreated coal. These bench-scale studies demonstrate that if high-intensity,; high capacity, dry, magnetic beneficiation equipment can be developed and' installed at coal burning power plants or at appropriate points in coal preparation plants substantial quantities of sulfur may be removable from coal after pulverization as a means' to reduce air pollution.

A study has been conducted to remove iron from sulfate solutions using Eichrom's Dipex® extractant, P,P?-di(2-ethylhexyl) methanediphosponic acid (H2DEH[MDP]). It is found that this extractant can effectively and selectively extract ferric ion from highly acidic solutions. Ninety-nine percent of the iron was extracted from a simulated feed solution in a single stage. The separation factor, Fe/Zn, was 10 6 Over 90% of the iron in a loaded organic can be recovered in an aqueous solution by reductive stripping. This paper presents the experimental results. A new process for iron removal using Dipex extractant is described and discussed.

This paper discusses the effect of grinding media composition, mineral type and slurry environment on the wear rate of various grinding media (balls). Sufficient wear data have been obtained and correlated with the modes of wear determined from examination of the ball surfaces using scanning electron microscopy. Five modes of wear have been identified to be operative under certain slurry conditions for the various ball compositions studied.

Silver-gold ratios were studied at the Tayoltita epithermal vein deposit using channel sample, channel sample line, stope, ore body and vein sample populations. The ratios are highly variable among individual channel samples (25:1 to greater than 500:1) with both high and low values randomly distributed within ore bodies and veins. Whole vein ratios for the fourteen most important ore producing structures range from 44:1 to 105:1, and show zonal distribution relative to two small granitic stocks, low values closest to the intrusives. The zoned nature of the deposit suggests that the stocks, apophyses of an underlying batholith of Late Eocene age, were the heat engines which powered the hydrothermal system responsible for ore deposition.
