The Eagle Mountain Mine of the Kaiser Steel Corporation is located in the California portion of the Colorado Desert at a distance of about 60 miles east of Indio, California. At the present time, this mine is producing at the rate of 5,000,000 tons of concentrate per year. A total of 1,000,000 tons of ore per year is presently being sold on the Japanese market while the remainder is consumed by the Kaiser Steel Company blast furnaces at Fontana, California. A new Pellet Plant and Concentrator is presently under, construction with completion scheduled for May or June 1965. This plant will have a rated capacity of 2,200,000 tons of pellets per year and essentially all of this production will be sold to Japanese steel companies.

"The world’s largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), at the time of her launch in 2012, the TBM locally referred to as “Bertha,” is incapacitated due to mechanical failure. Bertha’s stoppage places her 25m below the surface between the aged Alaskan Way Viaduct and the failing Seattle Seawall. Accessing Bertha with a vertical shaft provides the best approach to access all facets needed for repairs and will allow the full removal of Bertha’s cutter head and related inner workings. Due to the limited area above the tunnel alignment and physical constraints created by existing infrastructure, the dimensions of the otherwise symmetrical shaft are heavily impacted, thereby requiring special attention to design and layout. Consequently, the shaft design required a combination of 3m, 2.5m, 2.2m, 1.5m and 1m diameter unreinforced drilled secant piles coupled with various ground improvement techniques and dewatering, to fully satisfy the shoring design requirements. This paper will describe the shaft installation procedures, equipment used and pitfalls encountered while undertaking access shaft construction of this magnitude. INTRODUCTION Mining on Seattle’s SR99 tunnel began in July of 2013. Initial mining progressed slowly through a 4.5 m thick fiber-reinforced concrete headwall before immediately entering the first of three planned safe havens. Once through the headwall and safe haven the machine would move through roughly 122 lineal meters of jet grout improved soil at a rate of slightly over 1.6 m per day. It was anticipated that once mining has passed through the improved area, “Bertha” – now the world’s 2nd largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), would be moving at a rate of almost 11 m per day. By the end of October 2013, Bertha had mined roughly 131 m, averaging 1.4 m per day, and had begun mining within native soils. By the start of December 2013, tunneling had reached the 244 m mark and Bertha was now averaging 3.6 m per day, achieving as much as 12.8 m of progress on given days. Unfortunately, on December 6th, 2013, Bertha began to stumble and all progress quickly came to a halt. Initial reports stated an obstruction had stopped Bertha in her tracks. The preliminary investigation involved installation of 10 deep dewatering wells to reduce the hydrostatic pressure within the ground around the TBM, to allow the contractor’s personnel to inspect the cutter head from within and also to investigate for the presence of obstructions at the face of the cutter head. During inspection, the contractor’s crews found fragments of steel pipe entangled in the cutter head. The steel was apparently from an abandoned 254 mm diameter monitoring well casing, previously installed by WSDOT to monitor ground water conditions for the design and planning of this tunnel project. After the steel was removed from the cutter head and cleared from Bertha’s path, she attempted to move forward but was only able to generate a slow crawl."

Large reserves of coal pond fines are found in the Illinois Basin-over 40 million tons in Western Kentucky, over 65 million tons in Southern Illinois, and over 35 million tons in Southern Indiana. If these fines are used to produce coal-water slurry (CWS), fuel costs, NOx. emissions, and pond closure costs can be reduced. Coal fines from this region that are used to produce CWS for co-fire or re-burn may require processing, however, to attain proper particle size distribution and fuel quality. To evaluate the effectiveness of using coal cleaning technologies to control these CWS quality parameters, a simple flowsheet for recovering and processing coal pond fines was designed and tested. Coal fines processing consisted of using classifying cyclones to size at nominal minus 200 mesh, cleaning the classifying cyclone underflow using spirals, and cleaning the overflow using column froth flotation. Ash content of the dean coal from the spiral was reduced to about 10 percent, which is satisfactory to use for CWS co-firing in a cyclone-fired boiler. The clean coal from column flotation may be used for re-burn in a cyclone-fired boiler or as co-fire fuel in a wall-fired or tangentially-fired boiler. Heating value recovery during laboratory-scale, pilot-scale, and commercial-scale coal cleaning testing was about 80 percent.

Though the mining industry is beset with problems-a broad slump in metal prices, a rash of acquisitions and takeover attempts, rising capital costs, and an aggressive Canadian energy program-there was an under-current of optimism at the 1981 AMC conference that's been missing at industry meetings in recent years. The industry anticipates a turnaround in the 1980s, buoyed perhaps by the new spirit of cooperation from the Reagan administration. For the first time in years, it appears that Washington and the mining industry share mutual goals for developing the nation's resources. A number of prominent Reagan officials were on hand during the three-day conference in Denver, September 28-30, to reassure conferees that restrictions plaguing energy and minerals development would be eased. Interior Secretary James Watt and other government speakers promised cooperation in bringing balance to federal public lands policies, a review of regulations that have hampered the industry, and prompt action on domestic minerals policy. Daniel N. Miller, Jr., assistant interior secretary for energy and minerals, said, "It is our intent to dismantle the overhearing bureaucracy that has stifled mineral and energy exploration. We know that Interior's rules have shackled the mining industry in recent years, and we know that those rules must be eased." Miller noted that the administration will not permit mining on national park lands or wildlife refuges, but added that "we must assess a variety of uses of public lands ... we will restore lands to multiple use where practical." EPA administrator Anne Gorsuch assured industry representatives that the administration intends to work within environmental laws and with Congress to review and revise water, soil, and air pollution policies. "We have a strong commitment to see that there are major mid-course corrections" of air regulations, Gorsuch said. Support from these "new friends in Washington" will be crucial in light of the serious problems pressuring the industry. Copper prices have plunged to almost three-year lows and prices for molybdenum, gold, and silver have slumped. Earnings are down and today's high interest rates prevent a quick turnaround. Companies are on edge after the recent takeovers of Kennecott, St. Joe Minerals, and Texasgulf Though the companies may benefit from the major injection of capital that large energy firms can provide, many observers fear the new parent companies won't be willing or able to survive the cyclical metal markets. Arco and Gulf Resources, for example, have been criticized for closing Anaconda's Montana copper facility and the Bunker Hill unit in Idaho, respectively. Canada's national energy program has brought additional pressure on the industry. This policy, which emphasizes Canadian majority ownership of the country's energy sources, resulted in acquisition of Texasgulf's Kidd Creek lead-zinc-silver complex by Canadian and French interests. In response, the American Mining Congress adopted two resolutions on takeovers. One calls for the US government to review laws regulating tender offers and takeovers "to better ensure that principles of fairness and sound investment policy govern such transactions.'' The other asks the government to demand "fairness and reciprocity" as a basis for US policy governing international trade in minerals and investment relations with other countries. AMC's shopping list included four other priority goals, aimed primarily at the Interior Department: • Prompt implementation of Interior's efforts to bring order and balance to rules governing access to public lands for exploration and development. • Statement by the President of a comprehensive and coherent domestic minerals policy. • Amendment of the Clean Air Act to remove impediments to productivity and barriers to economic development that are not necessary to essential goals of the act. • Development of new approaches to better achieve worker health and safety in the most cost-effective manner without penalizing productivity. Almost 6000 mining industry executives attended the 1981 convention-the largest in AMC's 84-year history. As in years past, the conference offered a wide spectrum of presentations-nearly 100 papers in 26 sessions-ranging from commodity forecasts to the latest technical achievements. New Administration Stockpile Goals The minerals availability session included a presentation on management of the minerals stockpile by Paul K. Kruege r of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Krueger notes that rather than providing incentives for development of a domestic raw materials industry, the government has "a history of providing disincentives to industry." In mining industries, he adds, the rate of productivity growth has been -6% over the last six or seven years. Krueger feels there will be a major change under the Reagan administration. The existing regrind circuit at the Climax Operations uses sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent to reject pyrite, copper, and lead minerals. Laboratory flotation studies were performed using feed to flotation following first-stage regrinding. The effects of conditioning time, pH, and the concentration of depressants such as Nokes reagent and sodium cyanide on the rejection of pyrite, lead, and copper minerals were investigated. The metallurgical results indicate that, in the presence of depressants, the rejection of copper is strongly dependent on the pH. Preliminary mill testing confirmed the finding. The rejection of impurities is also dependent on conditioning time. The recovery of molybdenite is independent of the variables investigated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing an intelligent system for roof' control that uses both an expert system and neural networks to improve the capability of mining engineers to evaluate roof support effectiveness for ground control in coal mines. The expert system com- pares roof support capacities with the support requirements estimated to be necessary to maintain entry stability. It does this by evaluating the results of tests on various types of roof support and establishing the maximum allowable load according to anchorage capacity and yield strength of the support. After the user enters geological information (rock properties, geometry of the opening, in situ stresses, bolt pattern parameters, etc. ), the expert system compares the predicted required loading to the roof support capacity and gives the operator advice on the adequacy of the design and how improvements could be made. A good source of the real-time data necessary to allow the expert system to make decisions will come from a roof bolting machine being developed by the Bureau of Mines. Researchers have collected data from a Western coal mine on drill bit position, penetration rate thrust, torque, and rotation rate. Using this information, two neural net- works were developed to identify different types of strata and features in a mine roof such as rock type, rock compressive strength and joint characteristics. The result is a system that can assist a mining engineer with design information that can be constantly updated as mining progresses.

During the past 20 years, FKC-Lake Shore, located in southern Indiana, has been working with Contitech, the German conveyor company, to push vertical conveyor technology to new depths and open up additional opportunities for underground mine owners. Historically, the underground mining industry has largely been unable to realize the benefits of these efficient systems due to the design limitations in maximum depth and capacity. Until recently, only relatively shallow depth mines with low production rates have been a ?t for a vertical conveyor system. This, however, is changing with technical advancements in the Pocketlift system. With each milestone, a new vertical conveyor record is set for depth and capacity. For instance, in 2002, FKC-Lake Shore set one such record with the installation of a Pocketlift system at a mine in the Illinois coal basin with a lift height of 273 m (896 ft) and a production rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). Although it was unthinkable at that time, today?s vertical conveyors are capable of reaching lift heights up to 700 m (2,300 ft) with an average production rate of 450 t/h (500 stph). These new lift heights and production rates are opening the technology to more potential mine owners and shifting the way people look at moving material in the future.

"The majority of tunnels for civil engineering applications are now being constructed using some form of mechanical excavation. Beginning in the 1960s with rock tunnel boring machines (TBM), the tunneling industry has introduced both earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry pressure balance (SPB) soil machines; mixed soil and rock machines and a variety of different mechanical devices for the construction of small diameter tunnels. Over time, these machines have become more powerful and more adaptable to a wider variety of ground conditions; so much so that tunnels are now being constructed in ground conditions and in the vicinity of third-party impacts that would have been considered beyond the state of the art just 10 years ago. Figure 1 is an example of a mixed ground crossover TBM used successfully at Mexico City’s Túnel Emisor Poniente II.All of the above is highly advantageous for the tunneling industry, but it has also placed a much higher level of risk on the performance characteristics of the tunneling machines, on the contractors operating those TBMs and on the manufacturers of those machines. Most of the risks for a tunneling project are associated with creating the space inside of which the finished facility will be constructed. In order to create that space, the tunnel contractor must make many decisions about the best way to excavate the ground, the best way to control the ground at the face of excavation and the preferred method for supporting the ground around the tunnel in a manner that is safe for the workers and stable with respect to all of the overlying and adjacent existing structures. If it is proposed to use some form of TBM in order to build the tunnel, then the TBM becomes central to all three of these activities and becomes an integral part of managing the risks associated with these activities."

Western bituminous coal can be processed to low sulfur liquid fuels by fast reactions. A process (LEFCO) under development at the University of Utah uses coal and catalyst under hydrogen pressure to convert 60 to 70 percent of the coal matter to fuel liquids and gases. Coals have been processed in small diameter (less than 1/2 inch) tubes and at reaction residence times of less than 10 seconds. Effects of process variables on the yield and quality of products have been studied. General features of the process and the properties and characteristics of the products produced are presented. Special features of the process that distinguish it from other liquefaction processes under development are also discussed.

The Doe Run Company (Doe Run), a global supplier of lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrates, and lead metal alloys, installed an enterprise expert control system— termed as Digital One—on the company’s Pb, Cu and Zn circuits at its Buick Mill in December 2022. Digital One was developed with Metso and deploys Metso’s product, VisioFroth™. This automated system is now running and optimizing the flotation processes for all three circuits (Pb, Zn and Cu), all plant air and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC). In addition, Digital One also controls a second, newly built, modern flotation reagent system. Digital One also paves the way for automation and expert control of the entire mill, integrating grinding, thickening and filtration. Digital One is digitally immersed in a universal distributed control system (DCS); therefore, today’s mineral processing plants may be upgraded to it or designed around it. This presentation will explore the plant design and operation of this technology at the Doe Run Buick Mill.

Understanding the illusive nature of the catastrophic failure of brittle solids is difficult. Proposed is a hypothesis of crack cessation. If, during catastrophic failure, cracks in a brittle solid stop before terminating on a preexisting crack, this hypothesis suggests that the slope of the size distribution curve will be lower. Moreover, this hypothesis suggests that when cracks stop, negative valleys and negative comers appear. Furthermore, particle shapes also change with particle size. While the hypothesis is unverified, it suggests that crack cessation could play a role in the comminution process.

The mining industry's image is molded by what the general public knows, or thinks they know about mining. As we prepared for the production of Caterpillar's educational film, Common Ground, we first had to find out exactly what the public perceptions about mining were. Before we could educate people about mining, we had to find out what they already thought. As we broke down those perceptions, we were able to narrow our focus to relevant, realistic approaches for the film. We found out what people didn't know about mining. And most importantly, we singled out the facts they should know... facts that could create more favorable attitudes. This research was instrumental in our final direction for the Common Ground project.

Gold continued to be the primary focus of minerals exploration worldwide during 1995. Other targets, though, included primary diamonds and base metals, especially copper deposits amenable to solvent-extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) processing. The discovery of nickel, copper and cobalt at Voisey Bay in Labrador, Canada was an unusual surprise. Meanwhile, exploration geochemistry continues to evolve to meet new challenges. The major event in this category during 1995 was the17th International Geochemical Exploration Symposium (IGES) held in Townsville, Queensland, Australia in May. The meeting was sponsored by the Association of Exploration Geochemists, which celebrated its 25thanniversary of service to the mineral industry, and the Economic Geology Research Unit of James Cook University, Townsville.

Over 80% of Australia's population lives within 200 km of the coast, 70% in 10 major coastal cities. Potential cement raw materials are widely distributed but deposit size, quality, transport, market and environmental considerations are important in determining economic value. Major production locations are in a variety of geological environments ranging from Lower Paleozoic crystalline limestones to Tertiary and Recent polyzoal limestones and limesands, both onshore and offshore. Raw material transportation is by road, rail, sea, aerial ropeway and pipeline; road/rail transportation of the finished product is traditional but movement by sea of clinker and cement is increasingly a feature of the industry.

The major problems are identified the high phosphorus content and the fine dissemination or encapsulation of mineral impurities, in, ,the iron bearing minerals, A process which combined extreme fine grinding techniques with magnetizing roasting or flotation separation methods, is suggested. By these methods concentrates assaying 60-61 percent Fe exceeding the widely accepted upper limit of 56 percent Fe set for these ores, were produced with 75-90 percent iron recovery. Moreover it was shown that the phosphorus content of these concentrates could be reduced from 0.25 to 0.03 percent phosphorus by acid leaching. A brief discussion on production costs based on current and future developments in iron ore processing is given.

The United States began exporting coal in the late 1800'5, at first in very small quantities to Canada and beginning in 1897 and 1896, to the east coast of South America. Shipments to European countries began on a very limited basis in 1902 and these shipments increased gradually until World War One when shipments overseas increased from the 8 million tons per year level to 22 million tons. After the war exports dropped as fast as they had increased and, with the exception of exports to Canada, remained at very low levels until just after World War 11 when the United States again emerged as a major coal exporter. World War II left the coal industries of Europe in ruin. As the United States was the only country able to supply the large quantities of coal at reasonable prices needed for reconstruction of the European economy, the U. S. coal exports overseas expanded rapidly to 42.5 million tons in 1947. Additionally, we shipped 25 -2 million tons of coal to Canada In that year for a total export of 68.7 million tons. Unfortunately, that level was not reached again until 1957 when exports reached an all-time high of 76 .4 million tons- -a high I might add that has not been reached since.

Comminution, being the energy intensive part of a mining operation receives much scrutiny by cost controllers, CEO’s, investors and others as the mining industry goes “back to basics” to reverse the decline in productivity which occurred during the mining super cycle. Blasting is the first and lowest cost per ton stage in the comminution value chain. The basic principle that effective blast design can optimize fragmentation from the Run of Mine (ROM) ore muck pile to improve productivity through digging, loading and crushing to grinding and increase mine site profits has been well documented. Benefits of controlling fragmentation in the blast include reduced wear on equipment, faster loading, increased truck loads while detecting oversize rocks at the muck pile can reduce the frequency of a blocked primary crusher. A second basic principle is a measure of particle size distribution (PSD) at each unit operation in the comminution cycle allows engineers to manage blast design to produce fragmentation in the ROM ore most suitable to optimize downstream unit processes to improve mine site productivity and profits. Split-Online® systems have measured PSD of rocks on conveyors from the primary crusher to the SAG mill for over 20 years. Split-Engineering partnered with various mining companies to develop Split-ShovelCam® to automatically measure fragmentation from shovels and excavators working the ROM muck pile. This paper takes the reader “Back to Basics” by discussing the use of real time fragmentation analysis at the muck pile as an important parameter to optimize energy factors required for each blast. Case studies are given. INTRODUCTION The basics of mining are: • Explore for and find economic resources of valuable minerals • Mine rocks containing valuable minerals using blasting • Crush and grind rocks to liberate valuable minerals (comminution) • Recover valuable minerals for sale Comminution is an energy intensive process which accounts for a major proportion of mine site costs. Effective blasting can improve comminution and deliver significant reductions to mine site unit costs, (CEEC, 2016). Engineers, scientists, builders and even philosophers have long promoted the phrase “measure to manage”; the premise being “you can’t improve what you don’t measure”. Blast Engineers measure fragmentation in ROM ore for feedback to manage energy input in the design of blast patterns to optimize the ROM product size for downstream operations, whether they be for ROM Leach or feed into the primary crusher.

1 Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Let me first thank you for welcoming me to this international congress. I?ll have the pleasure to explain to you how the Lafarge group works on its quarry rehabilitation. I will deal with the way quarry rehabilitation has affected all branches of the group trough a global approach. 2 Quarries often are a subject of controversy dividing those are for and those who are against. My purpose is rather to examine where factors of progress lay and how in a quarry such as Lafarge we can include quarry rehabilitation, which is so fundamental dimension of our process. 3 - 4 As these two photos of French quarry show taking into account the environment in the quarry industry has been a recent preoccupation. In less than a century rehabilitation has a dramatically evolved in a positive way. Consequently our group integrate an ecological dimension in its activity. It?s an ethical question as well as a personal view of our role as a responsible industrial group. 5 My presentation is built around 4 points: I?ll begin by explaining why it?s our responsibility to rehabilitate quarries. I?ll go on to fill you in on the method of the project. After that I?ll outline the expected results. Finally I?ll talk about the rest of the project and the way we can ensure this know how.

Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Saturn light that significantly improves illumination for roof-bolting machine operators while reducing glare. The existing roof-bolter lighting was the baseline and was compared to the Saturn at 100, 75 and 50 percent intensities. Discomfort glare and disability glare were measured by the De Boer rating scale and the Mars Letter Contrast sensitivity test, respectively. Thirty study participants were tested. Discomfort glare was reduced at least three levels with the Saturn luminaire. Visibility levels were four to 6.5 times better with the Saturn than with the baseline. The Saturn design is freely available for commercialization.

Managing commercial risks associated with subsurface construction may be the greatest challenge the underground industry faces. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) was developed in the U.S. to help manage those commercial risks, and to stem increasing litigation in the industry. A guidelines document by the American Society of Civil Engineers was published in 1997 and was updated in 2007. This paper provides an historical perspective, overviews the main objectives of a GBR, presents issues and trends that instigated the need to update the 2007 publication, and describes the process that will lead to a new GBR guidelines publication in 2022
