The combustion of pulverized coal is a century-old practice. Many people have investigated coal dust and the residual fly ash particles that re-main after combustion. But the combustion process and fly ash formation mechanism are not under-stood. Working at our Maysville, Kentucky lime plant, the Dravo Lime Company Research team has collected samples of partially burned coal dust from the flame of a pulverized coal burner. Specimens were placed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Microscopic examination of the particles, together with a large collection of micrographs of lime dust fused to fly ash particles, now make it possible to theorize as to how combustion advances through a piece of coal dust. Coal is a physical mixture of carbon-based compounds interspersed with bits of ash-forming materials, primarily alumina-silicate compounds. The alumina-silicate materials are commonly in angular nodules measuring 100 A to 700 A across their major dimension. It would appear that if the coal particle is in a well mixed gas stream, combustion starts at the surface and advances radially toward the particle center. With poor gas mixing, it is common that combustion moves from one end of a particle and advances on a broad front almost normal to some axis. In either case the combustion process and ash-forming mechanism are the same. As combustion occurs the carbon-based compounds oxidize in a highly exothermic reaction. Heat from the re-action melts the alumina-silicate nodules causing them to flow together and coalesce into an open sponge-like structure. As melting continues surface tension of the liquid and free surface energy causes the sponge-like structure to simplify into fewer, larger pores. Most likely the lighter molecular weight hydro-carbons burn before the heavier species. This means that as the melting ash structure is metamorphosing to a single large pore, there continues to be out-gasing throughout the structure due to combustion. Surface tension will form a spherical piece of fly ash if the ash material is liquid for a sufficient period of time. Out-gasing from combustion of the heavier hydro-carbons will provide internal gas pressure to keep the particle spherical until it freezes.

The principles of quality management are well developed and, from a practical stand- point, thoroughly implemented in the process industries of Japan. Although these principles are now applied to the U.S. manufacturing industry, and as a result, the steel industry, they have been largely ignored in the non-ferrous and precious metals industries. This paper presents the concepts and practical approaches to implement a total quality management program. Contrary to the beliefs of many managers, such a program increases yields, recoveries and output while it decreases unit costs. In fact, quality management incorporating statistical process control will be an essential ingredient for metallurgical plants to effectively compete in the '90's.

As 1979 drew to a close, it was obvious that China would have another good year with output of most industrial products at 3-9% above levels attained in 1978. Most increases were registered on the basis of maximum utilization of existing capacities and nationalization of procedures and methods. There were also distinct improvements in the quality and variety of products. Coal output probably surpassed the 650-Mt level in 1979. Steel output was expected to reach the 35-Mt level, an increase of nearly 10% over 1978. Based on the vast amount of housing and road and project construction, cement production more than likely surpassed 70 Mt. The nonferrous base metal industries improved somewhat in 1978, but actual output levels in recent years may have been a little higher than previously estimated by the outside world. Stagnate world demand slowed growth in the "export metals" sector. Minerals like magnesite and talc were produced at tonnages much larger than previously thought, with gold also falling into this category. Sulfur and pyrite production are still short, although a big pyrite mine was being brought into production. Barite out-put was reportedly up and fluorspar output held its own. Westerners generally concede that difficulties in transportation and power supply are holding back mineral production. Throughout 1979, basic construction continued on the majority of projects started by the Chinese and those few foreign projects contracted before the adjustment of industrial priorities. Foreign Ventures Perspective The foreign connection looms large in China's plan for modernization. In effect, it is an extension of what China wants to do in terms of "walking on two legs"-that is, develop what can be done locally to the fullest extent, then rely on international technology to move into the bigger and more complicated projects. Foreign projects are designed to complement domestic projects rather than replace them. Many foreign projects were started or continued by the Chinese in 1979. Building the necessary infrastructure for the projects is usually a Chinese endeavor and requires Chinese technicians and money. In areas with a strong economic base, this activity proceeds without foreign aid. In other areas, added funds are requested. Foreign funds can come in many forms-equipment technology, low interest loans, equity capital, advance-of-funds on the basis of future delivery in kind, and joint venture money. The Chinese are exploring all these avenues, with the strategy of minimizing foreign exchange needs for individual projects. They feel very uncomfortable with high interest rates, even though interest can be treated as operating ex¬pense rather than capital expense. Then there's the question of rights. To ensure the continued growth and economic viability of the Western coal industry, both in the domestic and inter- national markets, it is essential for the industry to become more creative and active in confronting the most serious obstacle in this objective; and that is, the inherently long distances which Western coal must be transported inland to reach its major markets. Figure 1 shows the 1982 coal consumption by state for those states where Western coal was consumed. (Except as noted in this paper, Western coal producing states are defined as Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota. Any exceptions used will have only an insignificant effect on the content of the paper). This figure illustrates the long distances that are required for Western coal to reach its markets. The total production for 1982 from the Western coal producing states was approximately 220 million tons, of which only 85 million tons was consumed within the boundaries of these states. The remainder was transported to markets outside the area. This map also shows, based strictly on the consumption of the states to which Western coal was shipped during 1982 and not considering other factors which are involved in the marketing of coal, the total market potential of Western coal would amount to a total of 445 million tons. This does not include export coal from the West Coast, which is now estimated to be less than 2 million tons for 1983. In 1980, it had been estimated that by 1985 the West Coast exports would have been at least 10 million tons per year, which will not be attained.

The McKinley Mine is a large strip operation sup-plying coal to several utility and industrial customers. The mine reserve comprises many coal seams of varying quality and thickness. Erosion of the terrain has created coal out-crop lines that are encountered frequently with associated deviations in quality. Due to the complex nature of the coal reserve and the various customer quality requirements, coal quality control is a primary consideration and a constant challenge at the McKinley Mine. This paper will discuss the practices employed to ensure that the available coal meets contract specifications.

The Coal Pillar Rib Rating (CPRR) technique has been developed to assist in rib support design in underground coal mines. One major challenge of the data collection process is the measurement of coal strengths in the field. Schmidt hammer has been verified as a useful tool to determine coal strength. An alternative approach is to obtain the representative strength of coal mass by determining the coal lithotypes in the field based on the coal brightness profile by experienced geologists or mining engineers. In this paper, image processing techniques have been used to quantify the texture of coal images of different lithotypes with the purpose of classifying coal lithotypes. The coal images were collected from the pillar ribs with exposed surfaces in underground coal mines, and the coal lithotypes were identified when taking the images. The method of Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM) was used to analyze the textures of coal images of different lithotypes, and the texture parameters, such as contrast, homogeneity, energy, and entropy, were compared. The results show that the images of coal with different lithotypes have different textures, which can be quantified through the image processing. The results from this study demonstrate the potential of classifying coal lithotypes using rib photos and easing the data collection process of CPRR.

In 1970 Texasgulf (Australia) introduced natural gamma radiation logging of drill holes for exploration in the Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia. Drill hole logs have allowed positive stratigraphic and structural correlations within complexly folded secondary hematite ore deposits and between individual iron ore deposits separated by distances in excess of seventy-five miles. A Neltronics model KPD logging system and gamma-ray sonde are being used to measure the natural gamma radiation of the enriched Brockman and Marra Mamba banded iron formations. The parent banded iron formations are composed of thick, chemically precipitated iron oxide, chert, iron silicate, and carbonate with thin intro-formational clastic horizons. These clastic horizons give a greater natural gamma radiation than the banded iron horizon, and each clastic horizon has a characteristic radiation profile related to its composition and thickness. Because the natural gamma-radiation profile is unchanged during secondary enrichment of the iron formation, the present stratigraphic position of each drill hole can be established and complex folding can be accurately traced in the sub-surface. Gamma ray logging of percussion drill holes has made feasible a significant reduction in diamond core drilling without loss of accuracy. At the same time, it has provided a means of rapid evaluation of complexly folded iron ore deposits.

"Gold rush" is usually associated the western United States - California, Nevada, and Colorado. The southeast section of the nation is known more for its rice, textiles, tobacco, indigo, and cotton. This area, though, is where it all began with gold in this country. The United States' first gold rush, in fact, is said to have started with the discovery of a 7.7-kg (17-1b) nugget in the Piedmont section of the Carolinas in 1799, some 50 years before the rush to California. The Carolina gold rush continued intermittently through 1942 when the Federal Government shut down all gold operations. Strong gold prices throughout the early part of this decade and new extractive technologies spurred a small resurgence of gold operations in South Carolina. Mind you, this is not Nevada with its flood of geologists and mining companies. Nor are there any 7.7 kg (17 lb) nuggets being discovered. But Ridgeway Mining Co., a joint venture between Kennecott Corp. and Galactic Resources, has set about mining 51 Mt (56 million st) of low-grade ore containing an estimated 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) of recoverable gold. The open pit, carbon-in-leach operation is located near the town of Ridgeway in South Carolina, about 32 km (20 miles) north of Columbia. Carolina gold North and east of Ridgeway, Piedmont Mining Co. operates the historic Haile gold mine near Kershaw, SC. And Brewer Mining Co. operates the nearby Brewer deposit. Between 1829 and 1942, South Carolina gold mines produced 10 t (318,800 oz) of gold. It all began in 1799 when Conrad Reed, son of a German immigrant farmer, found the 7.7 kg (17 lb) nugget in Little Meadow Creek, NC. His father thought the rock was worthless and used it as a doorstop, so the story goes. It took nearly three years before Conrad's father decided his doorstop was indeed gold. Gold was later discovered in the Greenville district of South Carolina. And, in 1828, Benjamin Haile discovered gold in a stream that ran through his property in Lancaster County, SC. Haile's mine became South Carolina's most famous and most productive gold mine, producing more than 7.8 t (250,000 oz). At first, miners worked the stream beds of Haile's property. Later, lode deposits were discovered on slopes alongside the creeks. They would lease 4.6 ml (50 sq ft) lots and mine as deep as 7.6 m (25 ft). During the Civil War, the Confeder-

"SUMMARY While the basic elements of risk management, including probability, consequences, risk registers, mitigation measures, etc., are now well understood, the process to include correlation, dependencies and linkage of risks and risk scenarios is less well defined and not well understood. To perform accurate and complete risk analysis and risk management, it is necessary to include correlation, dependencies and linkage between risk events, as well as risks that may occur multiple times. In this way, owners and contractors can more accurately determine risk-based costs, risk impacts and risk mitigation strategies. This paper will outline methods to deal with correlation, dependencies and linkage and will consider risks that may occur multiple times. Practical result comparisons – with or without these elements – will be presented. INTRODUCTION We believe the reader is familiar with basic concepts of risk, risk management and mitigation and the use of probabilistic cost-risk processes versus deterministic ones (Reilly et al. 2015; Sander et al. 2015). The probabilistic approach, compared to the simpler and more common deterministic approach (unit prices times unit costs plus a contingency), offers more useful information with respect to the range of probable cost as well as cost “drivers” and better quantifies the effects of risks, opportunities and variability – which improves understanding, leading to a better potential for profit (or loss) for contractors and added value for owners. In this context, a valid and sufficient quantification of correlation, dependencies and linkage of risk events, plus the impact of risks that may occur multiple times, is essential. Components of Cost Estimates – Base Cost, Risks and Other Uncertainties The components of cost that need to be correctly addressed in an estimate include (Moergeli et al. 2015): •,Base costs – the costs that will result if “all goes according to plan” (Reilly 2004) •,Risk costs – the resulting costs of threat and opportunity events, if they should occur •,Escalation costs – costs resulting from normally expected inflation with variability •,Other uncertain costs – costs that result from other events, normally external to the project team’s control, which may include unanticipated events, politically related changes and “black swan” events (Talib 2007)"

In the late1970s, mineral processing plants producing copper sulfide concentrates and oxide leaching feedstocks went online with operating tonnages that exceeded traditional installations. This created a need for larger capacity belt conveyors and apron feeders. Apron feeders are slow moving, heavily loaded conveyors that feed a deep bed of ore from a bulk holding location (a bunker) as a controlled stream, often into a large capacity crusher. Apron feeders use sprockets and caterpillars, while belt feeders use rubber belts with motorized head pulleys to convey the material. The damaging of belts and clogging of transfer points from tramp iron required larger magnetic separators and the removal of tramp metal cannot prevent these serious problems. Corrective action at this location is important for two reasons: Removing tramp iron early in the ore stream protects downstream equipment from potential costly damage. Installing apron feeder magnets before the primary large capacity crusher means that secondary and tertiary crushing steps (made up of multiple parallel units) operate more efficiently, since tramp metal is removed at the onset.

The U. S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Yucca Mountain Project (YMP) is a scientific endeavor to determine the suitability of Yucca Mountain for the first long term, high level nuclear waste repository in the United States. The status of this long-term project from the construction perspective is described. A key element is construction of the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF), which is being excavated with a 7.6 m (25 ft) diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM). Development of the ESF may include the excavation of over 15 km (9.3 mi) of tunnel varying in size from 3 to 7.6 m (10 to 25 ft). Prior to construction, extensive constructibility reviews were an interactive part of the final design. The intent was to establish a constructible design that met the long-term stability requirements for radiological safety of a future repository while maintaining flexibility for the scientific investigations and acceptable tunneling productivity.

Past EPA groundwater monitoring programs required that contamination not leave the boundaries of a disposal facility. New regulations under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) require that once hazardous waste constituents are detected beyond the limits of the disposal area, a program to define the rate and extent of contaminant migration must be instituted. Future regulations are likely to include even more stringent groundwater protection criteria. The implications of both the existing and probable future groundwater protection and monitoring requirements in terms of using geologic containment as a means of disposing of hazardous waste are explored in this paper.

"This paper reports on computational and experimental research, performed at the Collaborative Research Center “Interaction Models for Mechanized Tunneling” at Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. Research covers a broad spectrum of topics relevant for mechanized tunneling in soft soil conditions. This includes advances exploration methods and models for the characterization of the in-situ ground conditions, the interaction of the face support and the tail gap grouting with the porous soil, multi-scale models for the design of fiber reinforced segmental linings with enhanced robustness, computational methods for the numerical simulation of the tunnel advancement, the soil excavation and the material transport in the pressure chamber, logistics processes and risk analysis in urban tunneling.INTRODUCTIONMechanized Tunneling has proven itself as an economical and flexible construction method that continues to undergo a dynamic evolution process. Shield diameters continue to increase, and the application range of tunnel boring machines is being extended to an ever-increasing variety of geotechnical conditions. In order to maintain economic viability and to ensure an environmentally friendly construction process, realistic and reliable numerical models are required in order to make informed decisions during planning and construction. To provide a reliable numerical prognosis, it is necessary to accurately assess and understand the interactions between the components involved in mechanized tunneling with the surrounding site, the ground, and any pre-existing structures. Heterogeneous geological conditions and often only approximated ground parameters create, in contrast to other engineering projects, special demands. This necessitates new insights to new problems that can only be effectively solved through truly interdisciplinary research. To address these challenges, the German Research Foundation (DFG) has established the Collaborative Research Center “Interaction Models for Mechanized Tunneling” (SFB 837) at the Ruhr-University in Bochum in 2010. Collaborative Research Centers are interdisciplinary scientific research groups in which cooperative research is conducted under the umbrella of a central research theme. With a research budget of ca. 10 Million Euros for the second 4-year funding period, and a research team composed of 13 project leaders along with approximately 35 scientific assistants the SFB 837 is currently one of the largest research groups conducting fundamental research in tunneling related topics worldwide.RESEARCH TOPICSThe research topics of the SFB 837 encompass a number of relevant planning and construction related aspects in mechanized tunneling (Figure 1). These research themes are each supported by computational models and laboratory investigations and are all included in an SFB overarching Tunnel Information Model (TIM). Interaction groups integrate and combine the results of different submodels through prototypical cause-and-effect relationships, and through the analysis of the Wehrhahn metro line (WHL) project in Düsseldorf, which has been adopted as the reference project for the SFB 837."

Risk is a major factor in all mining activities, arising from many internal and external variables. The authors? research has resulted in a systematic method for the quantification of risk in mining projects (Park, 2012), and this research is being presented in a series of papers. The first paper (Park and Nelson, 2013a) identified the variables associated with risk in mining projects, and their effects and was published in the October issue of Mining Engineering magazine. The second (Park and Nelson, 2013b) discussed methods of assessing the overall risk associated with those variables (published at www.me.smenet.org), and presented a statistical model based on a survey of 31 experts. This paper will present an evaluation of the statistical model, using data from previous mining investment decisions in which the authors have been involved.

Due to the remote locations of mining projects and the need for long transmission lines to provide electrical power, mining sites often operate with poor network power quality and low short-circuit capacity. To cope with this situation, more and more mining operators are considering the installation of appropriately designed synchronous condensers together with power factor correction and harmonic filter systems (PFC & HFS). The installation of such power quality equipment is viewed as a technological advancement in the mining application. An adequate level of short-circuit power is essential and has to be ensured for the safe and reliable operation of especially large cycloconverter-driven gearless mill drive systems (GMDs) used for grinding. This paper explores the impact, technical advantage and reasoning for the selection of this advanced hybrid technology to cope with the power system challenges of future mining projects. It also delves into the potential problems and how to address them.

Thank you Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen of SME-AIM? for this opportunity to talk to you about, one of the most interesting and challenging facets of our mining industry. Because the need was then -we built in 1964 what is still today, one of the most sophisticated AC mining machine simulators for this or any industry. It simulated the electrical controls and circuits of an AC shuttle car. The student activated the controls on the main console, which represented the elementary control and power circuits. Its accompanying slide-tape program, student manual and worksheets provided our customers with an effective and highly motivational means to teach their face mechanics: 1. practical AC circuit and motor theory 2. print reading 3. troubleshooting techniques Nearly 10,000 men have put in over 100,000 manhours of training on the AC panel and its DC counterpart. The DC panel was modeled after the 14BU10 Loader. The success of these larger panels pointed out the need in our industry for an orangized, basic electrical program designed around mining machinery components & circuits. But probably more importantly, they brought to light the tremendous thirst for upgrading by our industry's employees. We then turned our attention to developing programs around very basic panels. The resulting programs were designed also to assure maximum student involvement.

INTRODUCTION As practiced today, longwall mining is a mechanical version of an established mining system. The equipment for longwall mining consists of four basic units: roof supports, face conveyor, winning or mineral-getting ma¬chine, and stage-loader conveyor. The system mines relatively thin slices of mineral across a predetermined face length in a virtually continuous sequence. As the winning machine cuts, the mineral is loaded automatically onto the face conveyor. In turn, the face conveyor is pushed over into the newly cut track by hydraulic rams attached to the conveyor and the roof supports. The roof supports then are lowered individu¬ally from the roof, advanced to the repositioned con¬veyor, and reset to the roof. At the end of the pass, the longwall cutter is pushed over, and a slice is taken in the opposite direction, so the system repeats itself. Fig. I illustrates a typical longwall mining system. The principle behind the longwall mining system is that the roof is supported only immediately adjacent to the worked seam, keeping the blocks of immediate roof clamped securely from the face to the rear of the sup¬ports. At the rear of the supports, the roof is allowed to fall and break up, with the swell of the broken material eventually establishing an equilibrium in the strata be¬hind the mined area. Fig. 2 illustrates the principle of longwall support. There are two distinct types of longwall mining. The longwall retreating system is the most common in the United States, South Africa, and Australia. The longwall advancing system is the most common in the re¬maining industrialized countries such as Britain, Ger¬many, Poland, and the Soviet Union. The longwall retreating system comprises a mining panel, where the roadways that form the head entry (end at which mineral is delivered from the face con¬veyor to a stage-loader conveyor) and the tail entry are predriven before the longwall units starts production. In the longwall advancing system, the longwall unit makes the head and tail entries as the face advances, utilizing various techniques to prevent the entries from being destroyed as they are left in a consolidating gob area. Fig. 3 illustrates the comparative approaches of the longwall retreating and advancing operations.
