Although calcium sulfate dihydrate, commonly referred to as gypsum, has been utilized for some time in fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) applications, it does not have the fire retardant filler recognition of ATH. Gypsum is more commonly known for application in cement, soil and water treatment, plaster, and wall-board. Inherent characteristics of gypsum limit its use to low temperature and, until recently, non-aqueous applications. However, as a plentiful, naturally occurring hydrated mineral, the cost effectiveness of calcium sulfate dihydrate has prompted development and yielded success in the areas of FRP spray-up and latex carpet backing.

Coal was discovered in South Africa in the mid 1830's. The earliest exploitation of modern times was probably in Natal where, in a letter dated 20 August 1842, a Captain Smith mentions that a wagonload of coal brought to Pietermaritzburg, was sold. Until the discovery of diamonds in 1867 and the Witwatersrand gold in 1886, coal mining satisfied a very small domestic demand. By 1889, at least four collieries were operating in the Middelburg-Witbank district, some 120 kilometres East of Johannesburg, and mining had star- ted at Vereeniging, about 50 kilometres to the South of Johannesburg. A map of South Africa is shown in Figure 1 and an enlargement of the main coal mining areas in Figure 2.

Global public mineral reporting codes have driven strong governance of public disclosures of minerals information. Recently, we have seen an increase in disclosure of information related to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues, and governance of ESG information in mining companies has arguably reached a similar level of governance and diligence afforded mineral reporting. We define Resource Governance as the conjunction of environmental, social and minerals governance. A modern systems approach to Resource Governance, which combines mineral and ESG information, would provide not only reporting and governance capability, but also has the potential to sense/respond, predict, and manage ESG risks.

Metso?s Process Technology and Innovation group is a world leader in mineral processing consulting. A significant amount of this consulting work involves process integration and optimization (PIO) studies, which include investigating the effects of drill-and-blast design and implementation on downstream processing. Critical to these studies is the ability to track specific ore into, and through, the plant. To increase the accuracy of this ore tracking, Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) developed a system to track ore using a radio frequency identification (RFID) transponders technology designed to allow tracking of ore from its source through blasting, run-of-mine (ROM) pads, crushers, intermediate stockpiles and, finally, into the concentrator. The system is called SmartTag. Since its commercialization in 2007, SmartTag has been used in the majority of PTI?s consulting projects, and several permanent systems have been installed worldwide.

High pressure grinding has been introduced into many grinding applications. The high pressure grinding roll offers capacity increases of existing plants and savings in operating costs. Also metallurgical advantages could be achieved. The first high pressure grinding roll in a copper mine was commissioned in Arizona in July 1995. This paper provides information about the operating experience gathered during the first months of operation. The current flowsheet will be described as well as further options for plant arrangements.

In recent years in situ leach mining has emerged as a viable technology for the recovery of uranium from strata in South Texas which contain relatively low concentrations of uranium ore. Because the ore bodies lie within groundwater aquifers, a significant determinant in the economics is the requirement that such aquifers be protected from contaminantion. Since ammonia is one of the constituents of the leach solutions now being field tested, one environ- mental problem to be resolved is the removal of ammonia at the end of mining. A second related question is the fate of the ammonia which is not removed by the restoration procedure. This paper considers the displacement and migration of ammonium in a flowing electrolyte with concomitant ion exchange. The ion exchange is an important feature since, during the solution mining phase, ammonium saturates the mineral exchange sites and must be removed from these sites. A mathematical model is used to simulate this process and the model is tested against the results of laboratory experiments. It is found that the simulations are adequate if an appropriate selection of parameters is made. The model is then used to investigate the effect of cation composition and concentration of the restoration medium as well as dispersion on the overall effectiveness of the process. It is concluded that increasing the concentration of monovalent ions in a solution containing a mixture of both monovalent and divalent ions decreases the adsorption selectivity of the divalent ions with respect to all monovalent ions including ammonium. Thus increasing the ionic concentration of a restoration fluid by increasing the concentration of a nonselectively adsorbed (with respect to ammonium) ion may have a very limited benefit. Dispersion attending the flow of fluids in a porous medium is also shown to be an important factor. The effect of dispersion can greatly reduce the benefits of having a displacing cation which is adsorbed selectively with respect to ammonium. Since dispersion increases almost linearly with fluid velocity, an optimum displacement rate may exist.

The Cyprus Thompson Creek Mine is located at 2,286m (7500 feet) elevation in the Central Idaho mountains, 61.16 kilometers (38 miles) southwest of Challis, Idaho off State Highway 75. The Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit lies near the eastern border of the late Cretaceous Idaho Batholith within a complexly deformed sequence of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Molybdenum mineralization is contained in a composite biotite granodiorite-quartz monzonite stock considered to be genetically related to the Idaho Batholith intrusive event. The ore is being mined by open pit methods and delivered to the concentrator stockpile with an overland conveyor belt system. The concentrator is designed as a 22,680 metric tons (25,000 ton) per day plant at an average head grade of 0.1% Molybdenum.

Feed-forward control (i.e. the forward flow of information in a control system ) is a simple and flexible approach to over-all control of a ball mill-rake classifier grinding circuit. The system described here uses mill power, feed rate, mill dilution water flow rate, and classifier dilution water flow rate only, to control mill load, throughput, mill solids, and classifier solids as well as classifier overflow grind. The mill load is controlled by a simple feed-back control loop, while mill solids and overflow grind are controlled within close limits by a unique non-linear feed-forward water control system. In effect the control follows a limited mathematical model of the grinding circuit. The configuration minimizes deviations in overflow grind due to changing ore conditions, but since it is open-loop, and the model is not complete, it is affected by changes in total ball charge and liner wear. These effects are fortunately gradual, and changes in the grind can usually be kept to within ± 1% of a target continuously for several days without adjustment. Control adjustments are made with feed-back from laboratory composites. This control system has won enthusiastic operator acceptance; it is easily started up and shut down; grind-outs have been eliminated along with flotation machine flooding and mill spills. Standard measurements and components are used throughout providing a trouble-free system design at a moderate cost.

This paper outlines fit-for-purpose design principles for optimizing process flow, eliminating standby equipment and reducing buffer residence time whilst improving maintainability and operability.

The Stibnite Project is an open pit/cyanide heap leach gold property located in the Yellow Pine mining district of central Idaho. The gold ore is in an oxidized zone of an epithermal deposit which is associated with a fault system related to Tertiary igneous activity of the region. The faults transect a roof pendant of metamorphosed sediments within crystalline rocks of the Idaho Batholith. Seasonal mining is at a rate of 3900 mt/d (4300 st/d) of ore with a 2:l waste to ore ratio. Gold and silver are recovered through a process of cyanidation, carbon adsorption and desorption, and electrowinning. Disposal of the leached ore requires chlorination of the residual cyanide.

Computer assisted mine planning and design applications are routinely used by many Australian mining companies, However, the design process requires human expertise to recognize and evaluate the potential pitfalls. This paper introduces the application of a commercial optimization software (WHITTLE 4D) for strategic planning of an open pit mine in Western Australia. The authors present their experience in intelligent application of the optimization program while incorporating many technical and nontechnical obstacles. This paper provides some guidelines on how to apply the optimization software without loosing sight of practicalities. Moreover, this paper also shows how to build project evaluation guidelines for non-experts.

An analysis of an iron ore processing plant showed that its performance was affected by seasonal temperature variations, resulting in reduced grinding efficiency in the winter months. Laboratory and pilot plant studies were conducted to determine the cause of the observed loss of efficiency at lower temperatures. Experiments were divided into two groups: 1) Drop testing, which was performed to determine the effect of brittleness and frozen pore water on the breakage characteristics of the ore. 2) Wet grinding, which was further divided into laboratory tumble tests and pilot plant scale tests. Laboratory tumble tests were performed to determine the effect of temperature on the grinding of iron ore. This was done by varying the percentage of fines and percentage of metamorphic clay material added to the iron ore grinding charge. The pilot plant scale tests were conducted as a scale-up of the laboratory tumble tests and to determine the effect of temperature on slurry rheology, and how this changing rheology affected the grinding of iron ore. The combined results of drop testing and wet grinding were used to make some predictions of the performance of plant scale autogenous grinding. In drop tests the breakage characteristics of the iron ore had no noticeable change in size stabilities for dry and water saturated samples over the temperature range studied (-25°C to 25°C). The effect of frozen pore water was not observed due to the low apparent porosity of the iron ore. The addition of fines to the test charge caused a decrease in the amount of new fines produced for both the laboratory tumble tests and pilot plant scale tests. The production of fines further decreased when tests were performed at the colder temperature. The increased energy consumption at lower temperatures was dominated by rheology phenomena. The addition of metamorphic clay material to the iron ore test charge resulted in more fines being produced in the laboratory tumble tests. This was due to the metamorphic clay material grinding easier than the iron ore. This caused an increase in the amount of fines in the mill, which in turn, would prematurely slow down the grinding of iron ore because of an increase in the viscosity of the slurry.

It is a pleasure to appear on this program and discuss a subject which is of particular interest to me. In my regular duties as Safety Director of Bituminous Coal Operators' Association, I am called on by member companies to discuss matters affecting face ventilation. As a member of the Joint Industry Safety Committee, as I will later describe, I have a part in processing requests for the use of auxiliary fans for face ventilation. The use of auxiliary fans in bituminous coal mines for this purpose came into rather wide use in the late. '20's when conveyor mining was introduced. In this application, the equipment consisted of a chain conveyor with a face chain conveyor parallel to the face on which the coal was loaded by hand and, in turn, was discharged onto the room conveyor and thence to a loading point on the entry at the mouth of the room. Another method was to use a shaker conveyor with a duckbill which was maneuvered across the face of the room from which the coal was loaded and transported by the shaker to the loading point. In either case the equipment did not readily lend itself to driving crosscuts or breakthroughs with the result that rooms were driven to depths of 250 or 300 feet without adequate means of ventilating the face area with the main split of air. It was, therefore, necessary to use other means of ventilating this area as the rooms were being driven and during retreat work if pillars were extracted. Auxiliary fans of the blowing type were utilized for this purpose. They were of very small capacity using small diameter tubing. By the time the room was driven half way to its projected limit ventilation was very poor or practically nonexistent. To compound the problem the fan was usually set up at the mouth or neck of the room and in many cases the intake air to the fan was the return air from the room. It is small wonder, therefore, that there is on record 12 cases where auxiliary fans were given as the cause of explosions. In 9 of these occurrences, arcs or sparks from open-type motors or accessory equipment on these fans were given as the primary ignition source. They fell into such ill repute that in a number of cases they were blamed as the ignition source even though smoking was strongly suspected as the primary cause.

The Surface Mining control and Reclamation Act (public Law 95-87) (here-inafter the "Act" or "SMCRA") passed by congress in August of 1977 represents a comprehensive federal scheme for controlling surface coal mining and the surface effects of underground mining through permitting requirements, performance guidelines, and reclamation planning. While the provisions of the Act have been the subject of numerous legal challenges and court battles over the years, it is difficult to identify a more controversial program within the Act than the provisions for designating lands as unsuitable for surface coal mining operations. The lands unsuitable designation process provides for the acceptance and review of petitions submitted by citizens or organizations seeking to have specified land areas designated unsuitable for all or certain types of surface coal mining activities. In filing these petitions, the interested parties or petitioners are required to make allegations about potential adverse impacts on people or the environment and submit evidence supporting their allegations.

Lightweight concretes date back to before the Roman Empire. The earlier concretes were made by combining a burnt lime for cementious material with pumice or volcanic rock for aggregate. Although structural value was limited due to its primitive nature, many structures were able to withstand the test of time. The rotary kiln expanded shale industry had a slow start that began around 1908. The industry was founded by Stephen J. Hayde of Kansas city, Missouri. Mr. Hayde noticed that the bloating effects of some aggregates were undesirable by the brick industry. Material of this type was considered waste and avoided in brick production, but he realized it had all the qualities and basic requirements for a concrete aggregate that would reduce weight and still retain structural value. It came into national attention by use in ocean-going vessels through a shipbuilding program undertaken by the united states Fleet Corporation. This research was brought about by the need to find a suitable material to replace high-grade plate steel due to a shortage created by World War I. The need prompted the government to supply the reserves that Stephen Hayde desired to continue and complete research into producing a uniform lightweight aggregate. His results pointed to the rotary kiln method for which he was granted a patent in 1918. One of the most famous and largest concrete ships built through this program was the U.S.S. Selma. INTRODUCTION A company must have an objective, and that usually is to earn money. In some countries an objective can also be to reduce unemployment in an area or to develop nonindustrialized areas. Government-owned companies can also have as an objective that of serving the com¬munity. This discussion is limited to the consideration of normal companies wanting to earn money. Such an objective, however, has to be defined in more detail. It is not satisfactory only to maximize the total annual profit from, for example, a mining project. In comparison with most other branches, the mining in¬dustry is very capital intensive. When starting a new project, the mining company must invest a lot of money in mines, ore treatment plants, etc. It is normally many years before any income is received from the ore. Fig. 14 illustrates the payments for a new mining proj¬ect with an expected lifetime of 10 years. Whether this project is a profitable one depends on a lot of things. If the company has a shortage of money, it can be impossible to finance the project. Even if the company has enough money, the management may think that perhaps the project may not return the money fast enough. Such limitations will not be discussed here. Suppose that the company has internal funds from its own operation or can borrow them. Since the mining company must invest the money in advance, it is not satisfactory only to add all of the costs during the mine's lifetime and compare them with the total income during the lifetime. The company must include the time value of the capital. In this appendix, the basic investment theory neces¬sary to judge the profitability and costs of mining proj¬ects will be discussed. INVESTMENT THEORY Time Value of Money If a private person has a dollar and puts it into a bank, he or she will receive interest. If the interest rate is r%, the value after one year will be $(1 + r), after 2 years $(I + r)2 , etc. The interest rate represents the time value of money. If the same person wants to have $1 in the bank af¬ter one year, he or she has to put $(1 + r)-1 in the bank today. If the person wants $1 after 2 years, it is neces¬sary to put $(1 + r)-2 into the bank today, etc. So one dollar today is worth more than one dollar tomorrow. It is, of course, not correct to compare money at differ¬ent times since each dollar has a different value. It is necessary to transform all payments to the same point in time. That is called the calculation of the capital value of a cash flow, and to do this an interest rate is used. In the same way, the cash flow from a project like that shown in Fig. 14 can be translated to any other point in time. Most common is to translate all payments to the beginning of the mining period. That capital value is often called the present capital value. Interest Rate What interest rate will the company use? A com¬pany, just like an individual, has the basic alternatives of keeping its money in the bank and receiving interest, or borrowing money from a bank and paying an interest rate. The interest rate represents the time value of money for the company. If the company has a shortage of money, or many good potential investment projects, it has to use a higher interest rate than if it has a lot of money available. Most companies also increase their interest rate as a hedge against the risk involved by using money for uncertain investments, because of taxes, etc. Capital Value When the interest rate has been decided, it is possi¬ble to estimate the capital value of a project. Here the discussion will be limited to the estimation of present capital values. Suppose that one wants to know the present capital value of $1 (Fig. 15), which will be received after n years. To transform it n years back in time, one must multiply it by the factor (1 + r)-, where r is the inter¬est rate the company uses. Table 1 gives these factors for different years and interest rates. Example: At the end of year 5 a mining company has to invest $50 million in a new mine. What is the present capital value at the end of year 0? The company uses an interest rate of 15%a.

For decades, open-pit mine planning algorithms have incorporated geological uncertainty and other elements or characteristics for increasingly realistic representations. Among these complexities is the detailing of downstream processes that occur inside processing plants. Previous studies have demonstrated that the strategic mine plan and mineral concentrator design are coupled, and should therefore be optimized simultaneously within the same quantitative framework. However, existing frameworks offer limited representation of operational modes. This work demonstrates an approach to resolving this gap, in an optimization based on a parallelized Variable Neighborhood Descent (VND). The resulting algorithm embeds mass-balancing linear programming (LP) using a DantzigWolfe decomposition. A case study of a Zn-Pb deposit is presented to show the performance reached.

Chemical and physical properties of typical low-rank coal (LRC) ash are significantly different than bituminous coal ash. With the exception of extraneous ash, which is incorporated during mining or is due to ash partings within or between coal seams, LRC ash consists primarily of inherent ash that is bonded into the coal's organic matrix or finely disseminated mineral matter. This paper reviews the nature of LRC ash, both inherent and extraneous, and how this impacts the prospects of washing and utilizing LRCs. A literature review, as well as washability data, proximate and ultimate analyses and ash analysis of 25 Alaskan LRC seams are used as a basis for this discussion. The authors' recent research into the nature and distribution of phosphorous in an Alaskan LRC is also discussed

This study revealed significantly less favorable perceptions of the existing organizational safety climate among workers in the underground coal-mining sector compared with those in the industrial-minerals and sand, stone and gravel (SSG) sectors. Consequently, it is important to consider pragmatic ways in which health and safety management systems (HSMS) in coal mines can alter processes to improve these perceptions. Given the interdependencies of safety climate factors and HSMS elements, researchers explored mineworker perceptions of the supportiveness of organizational safety climate factors among mineworkers and identified significant differences in perceptions across sectors. In this paper, we suggest that health and safety professionals in underground coal mining and organizations with fewer resources or less mature HSMSs focus on these factors to bolster support for proactive safety performance. Potential barriers to implementing or improving relevant HSMS elements and ideas to help foster more favorable perceptions of organizational safety climate are also discussed.

"The successful commercialization of a pressure oxidation (POX) process for recovering metal values, including gold, copper, zinc, nickel and molybdenum, is the result of a carefully planned development program. The initial task involves developing one or more conceptual flowsheets, including the POX autoclave and downstream purification and recovery steps. A laboratory program is completed to determine the technical viability of the flowsheets, define the operating parameters for each step and provide information for an initial economic assessment of the process. The process is then confirmed during a continuous pilot plant program, providing engineering design data and other information for the commercial design. A well-thought-out development program has been shown to be critical for reducing the risk of commercializing POX processes. Experiences developing POX processes for refractory gold ores and copper concentrates are briefly discussed. IntroductionPressure oxidation (POX) has become a common commercial operation for processing sulfide-bearing feedstocks. These feedstocks include gold ores and concentrates; copper concentrates; nickel concentrates and mattes; zinc concentrates; and molybdenum concentrates. Drivers for the development and commercialization of POX processes include:• The high cost for pyrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores, much of which is attributed to environmental controls.• The motivation to implement safe and more environmentally attractive alternatives for sulfide ores.• The need to process increasingly difficult ores with complex mineralogy.• Improvements made over the last 25 years in POX equipment design and experience operating commercial POX plants.Although the capital and operating costs for commercial POX processing can be high, this technology is capable of rapid oxidation of most sulfides and arsenic minerals in the feed, with little noxious gases and environmentally stable iron arsenate and other iron compounds in the POX residue (Marsden and House, 2006).In POX operations, sulfides are oxidized to either sulfates or elemental sulfur in an autoclave at elevated temperature and pressure with oxygen gas.
