Maptek, an international development software company, released version 3.2 of its Vulcan three-dimensional mining and geological software package. This latest release is expected to give clients better graphics performance and improved overall solutions. In addition, the company also released the NT version of Vulcan for Unix and personal computers. More than 800 code changes have gone into the 3.2 release, the Lakewood, CO-based company said. Many of these changes were in response to requests from Maptek's customers. Others have been motivated internally by the company to achieve better performance in its Envisage graphics interface. The introduction of hot keys and user-defined menus makes Envisage a more flexible interface and a more productive working environment. A new animation option provides new ways to enhance the organization and display of data. The animated data can include point, string, grid, triangulation and photographic-draped data. The shaft-mapping facility is also included in version 3.2. It enables the cylindrical view of the shaft to be unwrapped and displayed on the screen while the data remains in its true world coordinates. Major upgrades to Vulcan include underground blast design and geotechnical modules. The new blast design module allows the user to develop a ring design in any plane defined by the stope layout. Radial and offset holes can be developed. User-friendly editing tools make adjustments to the initial design a simple task. The user defines the plotting and reporting of rings and plot style templates allow flexibility in reporting. New features in the geotechnical toolbox include options to create daylight windows and pitch lines on the stereo nets. Geotechnical databases can be directly updated from the interpretation of the stereo net. Direct annotation of the symbols on the net is now possible and the stereo net display can be customized. Improvements to the documentation and links within the text have made the on-line help easier to navigate. Maptek also released the NT version of Vulcan soft- ware. The comprehensive design of the software pack- age for Unix and personal computers provides a three-dimensional geological modeling and mine planning system within a natural graphics environment. Users who require the power to manipulate extra- large and complex data sets will still be served by the Unix platform. Users who handle small-to-large datasets can now choose between Unix and personal computer platforms. The NT version will appeal primarily to companies that already have a personal computer network. Response to industry feedback was the basis for developing the NT version. "We want to ensure that our clients receive the optimal product for their needs," said Nicolas Simon, vice president of Maptek in North America. Some advantages of the NT version include: ? Most mining professionals are familiar with the personal computer platform. ? All of the familiar personal computer tools are now available to Vulcan users. ? Resource modeling tools that previously required the powerful Unix workstations have been brought into the personal computer environment. This will help mining companies save money. "INTRODUCTION For many automation and safety tasks in open cut and underground scenarios it is crucial to have highly reliable distance measurements at hand. These measurements can for instance be used to obtain the exact position of a machine in one-, two- or even three dimensions. Research and development has shown interest in the ultra-wide-band technology (UWB) in recent years. While for this technology short range, high speed data transfer is the current main research focus, the technology can also be used for highly accurate ranging applications. Due to the use of a very wide frequency band, it is robust against disturbances of many types (e.g. EMC, rain, dust etc.) and is therefore attractive for the use in mining applications. The wide frequency band also offers benefits for ranging applications. Especially in environments with strong multipath problems such as in underground mines it is possible to focus on the dominant signal propagation path, thus increasing the reliability of the measurements. [1] State-of-the-art UWB ranging equipment claims precision within the range of a couple of centimeters and working ranges of more than hundred meters. At the Institute for Mining and Metallurgical Machinery (IMR) at RWTH Aachen University in Germany a modern UWB system was examined in several laboratory and real life tests to examine the feasibility of UWB bases ranging equipment in mining applications. UWB TECHNOLOGY The term ultra-wide-band denotes radio systems that use an ultra-wide frequency band. A common definition for UWB radio systems is that it needs to work on a frequency bandwidth of more than 500 MHz or a bandwidth equal to 20% or more of the center frequency [1]. Due to the ultra-wide frequency bandwidth UWB systems overlap the frequency spectrum of narrow band radio technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other mobile communication systems which use a defined carrier frequency onto which information is modulated on (e.g. by using frequency or phase modulation). In order to not conflict with these other radio applications, it needs to be ascertained that the transmission power of a UWB system on a given frequency is so low that narrow band systems are not affected by it. As opposed to this only a small fraction of the UWB system’s bandwidth is affected by the narrow band system. The unaffected remaining bandwidth is sufficient to reconstruct the original signal, even if additional noise is present. Figure 1 shows the power spectral densities of popular radio standards [6], [7], [8]. A significant driver of research and development of UWB systems has been wireless high bandwidth communication. Using an ultra-wide frequency band is highly desirable here, as the channel capacity is dependent on the bandwidth. So far systems have been realized especially for short distances (e.g. wireless USB or Wireless HDMI) but beyond that, communication systems for long distances (several kilometers) are possible [2]. Advances in semiconductor technology led to a reduction in power dissipation of such systems. This enabled higher integration levels which in turn facilitated smaller solution sizes for space constrained applications [3]. Nowadays, UWB is also used for high-precision ranging applications [4], [5]."

Underground mining is a very complicated and complex industrial activity. The uncertain and, in most cases, the incomplete knowledge of the geological and mineralogical nature of the deposits can cause unforeseen difficulties. For a safe and uninterrupted operation, in addition to good planning and scheduling, reliable and up-to-date monitoring and control of all processes and conditions become necessary. Today, this is even more important in view of increasingly difficult working conditions, poorer grades, and more complex and expensive machinery. In short, large capital investment and higher risk of financial losses are involved in modern-day mining operations. Monitoring and control of the underground mining process has become a very complex and difficult task in itself. Many different systems are available, and the correct choice .is of utmost importance from both the economic and safety points of view. This chapter will deal with aspects of underground production monitoring and control. There are, however, many other areas of equal importance which are covered in an excellent manner in a hand- book by Olaf (1976) on monitoring and control of underground operations.

Newmont Gold Company, formerly Carlin Gold Mining Company, is a publicly owned corporation, 95% owned by Newmont Mining Corporation. Newmont Gold Company has operated gold recovery operations North of Carlin, Nevada, since 1965. Development of the Gold Quarry ore body, 19 kilometers south of the original mine, resulted in the decision to construct gold recovery and ancillary facilities in what is referred to as the Southern Area. Plant No. 2, located 11 kilometers North of Carlin, Nevada, was designed to treat 6350 tonnes per day of oxidized gold bearing ore assaying 2.5 grams per tonne of Au at an average recovery of 87%. Flowsheet development conducted by Newmont personnel resulted in the decision to construct a carbon-in-pulp recovery circuit preceded by two-stage grinding, Detailed engineering was done at Toronto by Bechtel of Canada beginning on January 1, 1984. Actual construction began on March 1, 1984, and was completed in June, 1985. First feed was run on June 22, 1985.

The Downtown Rail Extension (DTX) is principal element of the planned second phase of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority’s (TJPA) Transbay Program. When complete, this regionally critical project will connect Caltrain’s regional rail system and the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s statewide system to the Salesforce Transit Center in downtown San Francisco via a 1.3-mile tunnel. Studied since the 1970s, the DTX has now received environmental clearance, and key stakeholders are aligned on the project’s configuration and its expedited delivery. This paper describes efforts to optimize the DTX configuration and develop an informed project delivery strategy that incorporates construction industry feedback on project phasing, contract packaging, and procurement methods that accomplish the project’s budget goals.

Continuous monitoring of carbon monoxide and other fire-related parameters by means of an atmospheric monitoring system (AMS) is used in the mining industry for early fire detection. Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed a direct method to calculate the fire heat release rate (HRR) when a mine fire is close to the AMS sensors, but this method is only applicable to the case where a fire occurs in AMS-monitored airways. This paper presents an improved method for determining the fire HRR using AMS sensor data at any location downstream of the fire. The method was validated using a full-scale diesel fire test conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine at NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division.

The Lac Shortt gold deposit is located in Northwestern Quebec, at some 115 km west of the Opemiska Division and 380 km northeast of the Lac Dufault Division, as shown on Figure 1. Falconbridge's exploration crews drilled the first six holes in the gold-bearing ore zone in 1979. After further diamond drilling from surface in 1980, the decision was taken to carry out an underground exploration program. A three-compartment shaft was sunk to a depth of 340 metres in 1981 and 1982; it was followed by an extensive exploration program, which included 1073 metres of cross-cutting and footwall drifting, 645 metres of ore drifting and 11 200 metres of diamond drilling. The underground work was completed by mid-winter 1983. It was followed by a complete feasibility study of the Lac Shortt Project. After some $Can 14.2 millions in exploration expenditures, the Board of Directors of Corp. Falconbridge Copper approved in July 1983 additional expenditures of $Can 45 millions to bring the Lac Shortt Mine in production at the capacity of 261 000 tonnes per year. Gold price was $US 425 per ounce at the time.

The New Lead Belt of Missouri, situated in the heart of the Clark National Forest, stands as a dynamic example of how mining activities can successfully coexist in a restricted wilderness area. After 16 years of intensive drilling activity, mine development and surface plant construction, many would agree that the mine-plant design philosophy of St. Joe has minimized the imbalancing effects to the ecology and the wilderness appearance of the Ozark area. In a recent dedication speech of St. Joe's newest operation, it was stated: 1 "this Brushy Creek Mine, as well as nearly all of the mines in this district, lies within the boundaries of the Clark National Forest. Here the Forest Service has an outstanding and realistic program for multi-use of Federal lands. Mining, lumbering, recreation and conservation coexist in, what I consider, a delightful wilderness environment. I believe that this same type of usage could be permitted on all government land without seriously detracting from its natural beauty." Each and every activity in the process of discovery, exploration, development and finally operating a mine and process mill could have drastically degraded some phase of nature's environment were it not for the well developed and executed plans of the mining people involved. This is not to say that everything has been kept in perfect balance; but most certainly the industrial impact on what was once a wilderness area has been held to a minimum. What follows is the story of how each phase of this gigantic development was handed by industry people. Through their interaction and cooperation with government agencies, educators and researchers, allowed not only the ecology of the area to be protected, but the aesthetic beauty of the Ozarks to remain intact.

Rockfall hazards are ubiquitous in mining environments making their control critical for safe mining operations. The complex processes involved in rockfall events necessitate a probabilistic modeling approach with well-calibrated material properties. The controls designed to mitigate rockfall hazards need to be reliable, efficient, and safe to deploy to meet the constraints present at an active mine. This paper presents an innovative solution to rockfall at Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon Mine. The solution incorporates the site-specific calibration and creation of a predictive rockfall model with the design, field testing, implementation, and monitoring of the rockfall controls.

The coagulation of dispersions of weakly magnetic oxide mineral ultrafines (such as natural hematite or chromite) in an external magnetic field can be described from inter-particle forces. Essentially, coagulation occurs when the short range London-van der Waals interactions and the long range magnetic forces outweigh the stabilizing electrical double layer repulsion. From the classical colloid chemistry theory, we have calculated the various components of the potential energy for different sized particles at a series of ionic strengths and magnetic field intensities. We have related this theoretical analysis to experimental studies where the magnetic field-induced coagulation of ultrafines of natural hematite and chromite in aqueous suspensions was investigated using a laboratory scale electromagnetic solenoid. The experimental results relate the coagulation process (as determined by magneto-sedimentation analysis) to the particle size, the slurry pH and the external magnetic field. In the magnetic fields, maximum coagulation occurred near the pH of zero point of charge (pHzpc) of the minerals (where the electrostatic double layer repulsion was reduced to a minimum) enabling the particles to enter the "primary minimum" energy sink. On the other hand, in cases where the electrostatic repulsion was not suppressed, then the long range magnetic forces enabled coagulation to occur in the "secondary minimum". This caused the formation of chains which appeared to be relatively stable during sedimentation.

"The picture of the baby surrounded by the number of (usually) pounds of a variety of mineral products a newborn will use in a lifetime has been widely distributed over the years, both on the web and as business cards that could be distributed to anyone. Figure 1 shows a typical example. I have included a slide of the mineral baby in various lectures over the years, particularly in my lecture “Industrial minerals: much used, little recognized.” The mineral baby with associated estimated lifetime mineral quantities is updated every year. I collected a set of past mineral baby pictures to examine the changes in the quantities of the various mineral products over the years.The mineral baby was introduced by the Minerals Information Institute (MII) in 1999 and became known as the “MII Baby.” SME took over MII in 2008 and continued publication as the “MII Baby” until the merger of MII with SME’s GEM program in 2011 to form SME’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC). MEC is now the publisher. Figure 2 is the 2016 version of the mineral baby. The repositioning of the picture of the baby from lying on its back to crawling reflects a major design change to help emphasize that SME’s MEC is now the mineral baby’s publisher.Data sourcesThe data used to prepare each year’s mineral baby comes from the National Mining Association, which collects the preliminary annual mineral commodity data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other sources. This preliminary data becomes available late in the first half of each year. The life expectancy data for each year comes from the Center for Disease Control’s “Data and Statistics by Topic” and the population data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s “Quick Facts” tab.The source mineral data is compiled using metric tonnes as the basic unit. The quantity of of each mineral is the apparent U.S. consumption each year."

We in Kennecott are well aware that Alaskans are interested in the progress of our project at Ruby Creek. We would very much like to be able to present you with a final report at this time and tell you about a new mine. I'm afraid, however, that it will be several years at best before such a report can be made. This, then, is an interim report to describe briefly some of our findings to date, and to acquaint you with some of the problems, both geologic and economic, which must 5e resolved favorably before we can talk about a mine. There are several things about this project which make it unusual and interesting to those of us who have been connected with it. Firstly, there is the fundamental importance to Alaska, in the present stage of its economic history, of any undertaking which offers promise of turning a natural resource into a competitive export product. I am sure all of us would get a lot more satisfaction out of having a part in bringing in a new mine in Alaska than we would out of adding another one to the long list in, say, Arizona.

The effect of Federal restrictions on Federal mineral estate in Alaska and the Western States is being addressed by systematic, State-by- State studies. The Bureau of Mines has inventoried and classified 3.5 million sq km (876 million acres) of land, section-by-section, according to 1) mineral ownership, 2) availability for mineral exploration and development as affected by Federal restrictions, and 31, areas containing mines and mineral resources. The availability of Federal land for exploration and development is spatially compared to areas containing mines and mineral resources. The methodology and overall results of the studies are presented.

In response to the mandates in the MINER Act of 2006, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted refuge alternatives research that included characterizing the utility, practicality and survivability of refuge chambers and outby safe havens. NIOSH also prepared and delivered a report to Congress in late December 2007 that summarized the findings of the re-search, included recommendations concerning the design and performance specifications for refuge alternatives, and focused on specific information that could inform the regulatory process on refuge alternatives. This paper highlights NIOSH?s research and recommendations concerning refuge alternatives, survivability evaluations of refuge chambers and presents a brief review of the current deployment of refuge chambers in underground coal mines in the U.S. The research has lead to the conclusion that refuge alternatives have the potential for saving the lives of mine workers if they are part of a comprehensive escape and rescue plan and if appropriate training is provided.

During the past several years, Raymond Kaiser Engineers has prepared numerous studies concerning the technical and economic feasibility of coal exporting facilities in the western United States. Perhaps the most striking conclusion to be drawn from these efforts is that many people underestimate the complexity of the highly competitive, dynamic coal marketing system which includes coal loading terminals as an essential but relatively low-cost link in the energy production and delivery chain. The title of this paper, "The Status of Western United States Coal Ports - An Economic Assessment," should not delude anyone into thinking that the future of western U.S. coal- exporting ports has now congealed into a well- defined economic plan. As this paper will demonstrate, the situation is complex and more dynamic than ever and promises to remain so into the late 1980's.

The accurate estimation of ore reserves along with capital and operating costs are two key components to the successful outcome of any feasibility study. In recent years, there have been many project failures caused by improper estimation of ore reserves. The accurate estimation of ore reserves for any deposit relies heavily on understanding its geology and underlying assumptions unique to the estimation techniques being used. The assumptions unique to commonly used traditional and geostatistical reserve estimation technique will be reviewed. The shortcomings of the estimation techniques and their possible impact on a given project's economic outcome will be discussed. The latest developments in geostatistics in overcoming existing reserve estimation problems will be presented.

The past two decades has seen the application of the mechanical flotation machine, originally developed primarily for metal1iferous ore beneficiation, increasingly applied to cleaning coal in the 28x0 T. Mesh size range. Internal cell hydrodynamic studies of mechanical flotation machines of all sizes, as well as computer aided modeling studies of flotation kinetics has, within the last five years, established a basis for optimizing coal flotation circuit design and machine operation, and has a1 so pointed a way toward improvements in mechanical flotation machine design for the future. Consideration of the trend toward increased fines produced by current mining techniques, as well as the environmental need for a progressively cleaner product, lends support to basing the design of the mechanical coal flotation machine of the future on finer feed; below 100 microns in size. Future types of mechanical flotation machines, which may satisfy the fine coal cleaning requirements for a significant improvement in product grade while maintaining the combustible recovery levels of current technology, are discussed.
