The Pacific Northwest as defined in this review comprises an exceedingly large and geologically complex terrain that occupies the 'Western Cordillera mobile tectonic belt. This metallogenic province is approximately 2100 miles long and 350 to 500 miles wide. It extends north-northwest from northern California and Nevada, through western Idaho and Montana, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and southwestern Yukon Territory, to southern Alaska, and west from the western flank of the Northern Rocky Mountains to the continental margin (Fig. 1). Many detailed and thorough exploration programs that have been conducted by mining and petroleum companies for over a decade have demonstrated that porphyry-type deposits are both numerous and wide-spread throughout this province. Although the Granby Mining Company extracted about 34 million tons of copper sulfide ore from Copper Mountain during the period 1900-1957, intentional large-scale production of porphyry-type ores was first initiated in 1962. It began at Bethlehem Copper Corporation's East Jersey orebody in the Highland Valley District of south-central British Columbia, approximately eight years after Mr. H. H. Huestis rediscovered that broad zone of copper-molybdenum metallization and recognized its potential significance.

Kittilä Mine is a gold mine located in Northern Finland, owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Finland. The mining operation started in 2008 with open pits which were completed in 2012 and production moved to being entirely underground. The mine consists of four separate orebodies, currently producing 2.0 Mt per annum, and requiring over 19 km of development on a yearly basis. The principal mining method is long hole stoping with delayed backfill. Microseismic monitoring was initially tested in the Suuri orebody, in the mining block between the 625 and 500 Levels. A small monitoring system was installed in 2018, after observations of stress-induced damage to the rock mass and in anticipation of future mining at greater depth. The initial goals were to evaluate if useful data could be recorded and test the signal quality of different sensor types. Prior to 2018, ground control related challenges in the Suuri and Roura mining blocks had been mostly related to sill pillar mining and block movements between weak graphitic schist planes. Seismic monitoring in the Suuri deposit proved successful for following the rock mass response to mining and helped support the rationale for early monitoring in the new, deeper mining block in Rimpi at 900 m depth. Preliminary geotechnical characterization and testing of the rock mass showed areas of silicification in the footwall rocks with potentially continuous structural features. Seismic monitoring of the Rimpi area has confirmed the brittle behavior of the rock mass, with strong seismic responses induced by stress changes following blasting being recorded. In addition to this expected behavior, a large magnitude event associated with significant damage in the footwall drive development 90 m above the stoping was experienced. Initial investigation of the rockburst showed two separate damage locations with over 300 tons of displaced rock. The seismic monitoring system recorded this rockburst as a single seismic event with magnitude significantly larger than previously recorded. Additional analyses indicated a possible thrust fault event, triggering two separate strainbursts. Following this event, the ground support system was upgraded in parts of the footwall drives to improve dynamic capacity. There are two aspects of financing western coal development -- whether there is going to be enough money to finance the prospective large development of the industry, and the specific techniques of raising money for that development. To take the first question of whether there is going to be enough money around to finance your industry, I think it is quite clear that the restrictions on the development of western coal are going to be non- financial. Environmental impact problems are creating the greatest delay in coal mine development, at the moment; but getting enough personnel, mining equipment, railroad equipment, and failure of the Department of Interior to act on leasing federal coal lands all appear likely to create significant bottle- necks in the development of western coal -- larger bottlenecks than financing. Financing appears straightforward for the industry. There are many projections of the financing required to meet Project Independence goals. The National Academy of Engineers estimated that development of 500 million tons per annum of western coal would be necessary by 1985 to meet the Project Independence goals which might require $20 billion of capital spending. It is generally agreed that 500 million tons a year is not a realistic possibility. Carl Bagge?s estimate of production of 250 million tons a year by 1983 appears a more reasonable projection. The TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyzer (TIMA), an automated mineralogy system, enables fast and quantitative mineral analyses of rocks, ores, concentrates, tailings, leach residues or smelter products. It combines BSE and EDX analysis for identification and measurement of mineral concentrations, particle size distribution, and liberation/locking parameters. In addition, it can provide bright particle searches for PGM, gold-silver ores, and/or REE. With the newly developed Automated Loading System (AutoLoader), the TIMA has become the world?s first automated mineral analyzer which permits robust, continuous and unattended sample loading. With the AutoLoader (robotics) system, the TIMA has emerged as a powerful plant support instrument. It increases the sample throughput, minimizes manual labor and enables 24/7 operations. As such, it can be used in daily, continuous mineralogy for mine geology/ore control, concentrators, leach operations, and smelter support. It will also increase the capabilities of technical service centers for mining companies, commercial laboratories, large drilling programs or pilot test campaigns. In combination with a highly automated sample preparation lab (sizing, potting and polishing), TIMA technology can establish high-throughput and fast-turnaround automated mineralogy lab modules for mine-site production support.

In 1970 U. S. Steel acquired the physical assets of mine, mine property, and preparation plant of the Crystal Block Coal Company near Thacker, Mingo County, West Virginia. The facility, identified as U. S. Steel Mine No. 20, is administered and operated as a production unit of U. S. Steel Gary District, Gary, West Virginia. Mining operations of the No. 20 mine are conducted in the high-volatile Alma seam. The preparation plant, which originally had a capacity of about 150 tons per hour (tph) of raw-coal feed, had process circuitry consisting of a Daniels heavy-media vessel for cleaning the plus-1/4-inch raw coal, a McNally-Pittsburg feldspar jig for cleaning the 1/4 inch by 28 mesh, and Daniels flotation cells for treating the 28 mesh by 0. No water-classification system existed. Refuse tailings from the plant were pumped to several surface lagoons which were decanted to the stream. The settled solids were removed and trucked to the coarse-refuse disposal area. Water make-up requirements were supplied by a small mine-water surface reservoir and augmented with stream water. The authors will attempt to clarify the terminology used, and where possible, give illustrations of plant practice with actual operational and pilot plant data. This is considered necessary in order to obtain a clear picture of the comparison of such equipment to the revolutionary change that the Aerofall Mill has brought to the mining industry.

Whilst coalmining in the United Kingdom has been synonymous with longwall mining practice there have been changes in recent times which have enabled not only an extension in the length of the face to be worked but also in the ability to extract both thick and thinner seams. Additionally the industry has taken a positive view in the extension of retreat methods of extraction applied for different reasons both to particularly thick and specially thin seams. To permit development of a flexible programme to meet these diverse needs, it has been necessary to design machinery along with mining systems specially suited to these requirements. In reviewing current UK thinking special emphasis is made on the extraction of thinner seams generally of higher quality coal at moderate depths with a commentary on some recent results.

INTRODUCTION This chapter will discuss, both from fundamental and practical points of view, the flotation of non-sulfide min- eral s. The flotation characteristics of silicates, salt-type minerals, oxides and coal will be reviewed. Dup- lication of the thorough and excellent presentations by many authors is not intended and a comprehensive list of references is included. GENERAL PRINCIPLES Collectors for Non-Sulfide Minerals : All minerals, with only a few exceptions are readily wetted by water, that is, they are said to be hydrophilic. The purpose of a collector is to coat the mineral surface and render it hydrophobic, preferring an environment of air over an environment of water. Relative to sulphide minerals, the non- sulfides are more naturally hydrophilic and therefore, require a collector with a greater chain length. This is accomplished by using a collector which has a proportionally longer hydrocarbon chain. Both anionic and cationic flotation collectors are used in non- sulfide flotation. Anionic Collectors. These are collectors which ionize in solution to give a negatively charged radical. They have the general structure R-A, where R is a hydrocarbon having 8 or more carbon atoms and A is a hydrogen or an alkali metal. The most common collectors in this group are fatty acids which could have saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon chains. Such chains may be straight or branched. The configuration of the chains affects their solubility in water and their adsorption characteristics. In general, as the chain length increases the adsorption and the collecting power increases. However, it should be noted that the solubility decreases. The solubility of unsaturated chains is greater than that of saturated fatty acids because double or triple bonds are polar and thus attract water molecules. Solubility data for collector metal salts, even though important for a proper understanding of flotation are not available for all collector systems. Solubilities and structures of different fatty acids are reported by Fuerstenau (1982). Values for the solubility products of fatty acid salts selected from a paper by Du Rietz (1958) are given in Table 1.

For several generations now, the high alumina clayey sediments of Southeastern Alabama and Southwestern Georgia have supplied those regions with steady, mineral-based income although the impact of that income has been relatively minor until recently. Since World War II, mining activity has increased algebraically with over half of the total ore value in the Alabama area having been recovered since that time. The Georgia area production increases are even more dramatic. The trends are continuing and the next decade should see ore winning figures which will dwarf all previous production. It's time for the mining engineers to take note of this development as the mining methods, similar to the production, have developed rapidly and now offer challenges for the most competent professional. The development of mining techniques has followed a classic pattern. Beginning almost a hundred years or so ago, with the loading of weather-resistant surface boulders into mule-drawn wagons, mining methods have progressed to discovery of limited surface exposures in outcrop and eventually to stripping and development of non-obvious, subsurface deposits. Little by little, the overburden thickness of new pits has increased until, at present, pits with 100' -125' of overburden are being actively worked. Ground water problems in the Eufaula District are particularly challenging. At A. P. Green's J. W. Baker Pit, #l, in Barbour Co., Alabama, it is necessary to continually pump groundwater at the rate of about 400 gallons per minute from wells on the periphery of this large pit in order to keep the water table low enough to allow mining of the ore body.

The Lime Creek* ore body in northwestern British Columbia is one of the few commercial primary stockwork-type molybdenite deposits in North America. Others include the Climax, Urad-Henderson, Questa, and Endako ore bodies. They are mined on a low grade-high tonnage basis, and are open pit operations except for Climax and Urad-Henderson. Much recent geochemical research on both porphyry copper and stockwork MoS2 deposits has been concerned with dating of micas related to the mineralization and associated igneous rocks. The results appear to show that mineralization and the predominant magmatic events of the deposit are indistinguishable in age (1-5), except where dating has been in sufficient detail to resolve the analytical overlap (6). At Lime Creek, geologic information shows that the Main granodiorite, the major intrusive and dominant host rock for MoS2 mineralization, was emplaced and had solidified sometime prior to the introduction of MoS2. The first MoS2 episode is intimately related to localized bodies of kalialaskite which clearly intrude the older stock. K-Ar dating was undertaken to clarify the age relations between Lime Creek plutonism and the apparently younger hydrothermal event that began with kalialaskite.

As mine venti1ation systems become more complex, it is increasingly difficult to supply fresh air to the working face. A high percentage of the fresh air entering a mine never reaches the working face because it short circuits through stoppings and doors, exiting the mine without being utilized. When ventilation limits are reached, the only option presently available to most U.S. mines is to sink a new shaft - an extremely expensive undertaking that many companies cannot afford. Reusing or recirculating a percentage of ventilating airflow may make it possible for some mines to remain operational while maintaining a safe environment for workers. Such a study was performed at a trona mine in Granger. Wyoming. A vane axial fan was used to recirculate approximately 9.4 m /s (20,000 cfm), 25% of the total ventilating airflow, back to the working face area of a three-entry continuous miner section. This study involved two evaluations: the first when the face was 305m (1,000 ft) from the recirculation fan, the second when the face was 610m (2,000 ft) from the fan. The evaluation consisted of monitoring the mine atmosphere for respirable dust, methane (CH4). carbon monoxide (CO), and nitric oxide (NO), at various locations in the intake and return entries. Several shifts were monitored, with and without the recirculation system in operation. With the recirculation system in operation. there was an increase in measured respirable dust concentrations in the intake along with a slight increase in the mine temperature (1.67°C). There were also some minor changes in CO and NO levels in the intake entry, but this seemed to depend on the proximity of the instruments to the turn-around point for the diesel haulage vehicles, than to whether the recirculation system was or was not in use.

Since 1965 several researchers have independently developed computer models for designing gathering belt and surge bin capacities in underground coal mine belt systems. Table 1 summarizes the models applicable to U.S. mining systems. Most of the models, employ the Monte Carlo simulation technique. Basically, the belt loading at each loading point is randomly produced from probability distributions. In some cases, a combination of deterministic calculations and probability distributions are used to simulate the loading. Once the loading is simulated, it is systematically moved through the belt system in a deterministic fashion based on belt speeds, belt lengths, and storage bin discharge rates. The coal flowing from each loading point is tracked as it moves through the belt system. When the loading from tm different sources combines on a belt or in a surge bin, checks are made to determine if capacities have been exceeded. If capacities have been exceeded the amount of spillage is calculated. At the end of the simulated time period, the cumulative spill- age is used to evaluate the belt and surge bin capacities. Naturally, a considerable amount of spillage indicates the capacities are unacceptable. Acceptable capacities are generally indicated by minimal spillage. Numerous trial simulations are often necessary to find the acceptable capacities.

The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating unstable slopes along the Konkan railway in India without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw were developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3, irrespective of the actual free face, was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle was changed from 80–82 to 45–47 degrees, and possible wedge, planar and toppling failures were eliminated. No incident of rockfall and slope failure along these slopes has been observed after the stabilization.

A large body of readily available Na-montmorillonite is present about 24km (15 miles) east of Fallon, Nevada. The clay is comparable to Wyoming Na-bentonite, but with somewhat less MgO and somewhat more Fe2O3 in its crystal structure. The physical and industrial properties of the Nevada clay are comparable to those of the Wyoming clay. The Na-montmorillonite is presently mined for use as hazardous waste barrier material and as a sealant for canals. It may be economically feasible to process the clay material for removal of impurities.

In a 2007 report to the U.S. Congress, the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH OMSHR) stated that built-in-place refuge alternatives (BIP RAs) provide significant advantages over mobile refuge alternatives. At present, the requirement to locate refuge alternatives within 305 m (1,000 ft) of working faces makes BIP RAs impractical in most coal mines. BIP RAs would be practical if three issues are addressed: (1) allowing BIP RAs to be located at greater distances from the working face, (2) developing a reliable process for the design and approval of BIP RA stoppings that meet the 0.1-MPa (15-psi) design criteria, and (3) developing systems that reliably deliver breathable air to the refuge alternative. In 2015, NIOSH OMSHR conducted a study of these three issues and issued a report. In the report, justification was provided for allowing the placement of BIP RAs at greater distances from the working face than the currently mandated 305 m (1,000 ft), guidelines were developed that could be used by industry when submitting BIP RA stopping design applications for approval which are patterned after the Mine Safety and Health Administration guidelines for coal mine seal design applications, and insights were provided into options for providing a reliable supply of clean, breathable air to BIP RAs. This paper presents a summary of the study’s findings and also addresses issues discovered during the building and designing of a BIP RA that OMSHR researchers constructed in NIOSH’s Experimental Coal Mine in Pittsburgh to research the testing and improving of BIP RAs. These issues include several issues related to the delivery, distribution and exhaust of ventilation air to the BIP RA and some general construction issues that require further investigation.

The centrifuge which will be reviewed in this dis¬cussion is the continuous solid bowl typo. As there are presently approximately 2000 of these units operating in our country, and about 200 of these in use in the coal industry, I expect that most of you are acquainted with its operating principle. How¬ever, for those who are not familiar with the machine a brief introduction is in order. The continuous solid bowl centrifuge was first successfully marketed, worldwide by the Bird machine Company in 1934. The successful development of this unit was based primarily on the invention of a drive mechanism to properly control the differential speed between the two rotating elements. This centrifuge was introduced into the coal industry immediately following the second World War. Today there are five or six additional firms' selling this machine in our country, and approximately twenty others in Europe, England and Japan.

A study was conducted to remove iron from sulfate solu¬tions using Eichrom'sDipex®extractant, PP'-di(2-ethylhexyl) methanediphosphonic acid (H2DEH[MDP]). It was found that this extractant can effectively and selectively extract ferric ion from highly acidic solutions. Ninety-nine percent of the iron was extracted from a simulated feed solution in a single stage. The separation factor, Fe/Zn, was 106. More than 90% of the iron in a loaded organic can be recovered in an aqueous solution by reductive stripping. This paper presents the experimental results. A new process for iron removal using Dipex extractant is described and discussed.

Recent ore pass failures have underlined the need for improved designs, standards, structural monitoring methods, and better hang up prevention and removal techniques. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating methods to improve safety during transport of ore in ore passes. Design criteria and hang-up prevention and remediation strategies involve studies of the effects of static and dynamic ore and waste rock loads on chutes, walls, gates, and support structures. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate the response of various ore pass designs to a wide range of ore loading conditions. A full-scale mock-up of actual ore pass and chute assemblies was duplicated and tested for load response. Data from a particle flow code and the mock-ups were com-pared. Loads on an active ore pass chute were measured.
