Allis-Chalmers has combined a new heat transfer device, called the ROLLER GRATE, with a unique processing scheme, resulting in the ROLLER GRATE Oil Shale Processing System of Allis-Chalmers. In order to test both the process and the equipment, a batch Process Development Unit (PDU) ROLLER GRATE retort was designed and built. This unit vas designed with the flexibility to process shale over a wide range of test conditions in order to demonstrate the attributes of the oil-shale processing system. Instrumentation on the PDU and extensive sampling of the effluent streams permitted the PDU test data to be used in the design and scale-up of the process. Over 30 tests have been conducted with Colorado shale, and over 25 tests have been run with an Indiana shale. In addition, rests have been run with California and Utah tar sands.

Acid rain legislation, the new tax package, excess coal capacity, the effects of low oil prices, how to increase coal exports: These were among the items discussed at the May 4-7, American Mining Congress coal convention in Pittsburgh. Some 2000 people attended the convention, which also offered 15 technical sessions. As always, the state of the domestic coal industry might be characterized as "long-term promise, short-term problems." And one of these problems is acid rain. Acid rain The proposed acid rain legislation in Congress could be the most costly piece of environmental legislation ever written. In its present form, the measure could cost the nation up to $110 billion over the next 15 years. Rep. Henry Waxman's (D-CA) bill, HR 4567, would mandate large reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants. The bill has more than 150 Republican and Democratic cosponsors. Ed Addison is president of the Southern Co., one of the nation's largest utilities and users of domestic coal. Addison noted that America's electric utility industry buys and uses nearly 85% of the coal consumed in this country. He said Waxman's bill would drive up prices of low-sulfur coal, raise electric rates, and force miners out of work in high-sulfur coal regions. In repeating a standard coal industry response, Addison said the Clean Air Act is doing the job. In recent years, while coal use has gone up, S02 emissions have gone down. Current air pollution standards are producing cleaner air, he said. Despite concern over HR 4567, the bill's future is uncertain. Several coal industry executives and analysts predict the bill will die under weight of opposition from coal, utility, and steel interests. But the acid rain issue is gaining momentum. Future legislation of some kind is likely. Meanwhile, research continues to develop clean coal technology to deal with the S02 problem. Commercialization of these front-end technologies currently lags public sentiment for acid rain legislation. Ground water runoff and contamination is another area where future legislation would seem likely. Already, one bill has been introduced in Congress. A second is being drafted. The impact of such legislation may be significant according to Bruce Leavitt, a hydrogeologist with Consolidation Coal Co. He said if current proposals are adopted, there will be more federal, state, and local government involvement in ground water regulation. In any event, the coal industry can expect to see more emphasis on preventing acid mine drainage and on water replacement, according to Leavitt. He urged those in the coal industry to present information about mining and ground water. That is needed to prevent misdirected state and federal programs, he said. Another coal industry concern is excess capacity. The industry has the mines, equipment, and employees to produce 15% more coal than at present. Problem is, the markets are not there. Slower-than-predicted growth in electric utility coal use has kept sales sluggish. There are also tax uncertainties. Congress is considering repeal of the investment tax credit and elimination of black lung payments and excise taxes as deductible expenses. One analyst estimates the coal industry would lose $1.1 billion in five years, if the changes are approved. In addition, there are the usual concerns about excessive governmental regulations involving safety and environmental matters. Bill Kegel, for example, said these regulations mean extra costs and delays in developing mines. Kegel is president and chief executive officer of the Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal Co. More than half the electrical power in the US is generated by coal-fired plants. That percentage could slip by a couple of points as nuclear generators come on-line the next few years. About 1990, though, we will see the end of US nuclear plant construction. No new nuclear plants have been scheduled since 1978. So any growth in electric power use should benefit the coal industry. BethEnergy - High Power Mountain During 1985, BethEnergy - a Bethlehem Steel Corp. - subsidiary developed High Power Mountain, a 1.8-Mt/a (2-million-stpy) surface mine in West Virginia. Construction saw movement of more than 3 hm3 (4 million cu yds) of earth. A computerized 544 t/h (600 stph) heavy media cyclone prep plant and a 3.6-kt/h (4000-stph) railroad loadout facility were built in six months. And a 5.6-km (3.5-mile) railroad spur and loop bridging a major highway were constructed. Larry Willison of BethEnergy noted the project's ambitious construction schedule. It was forced by the need for the project to be market driven and - lacking available capital - externally financed. BethEnergy did several things before obtaining with Detroit Edison a market for 0.9 Mt/a (1 million stpy) of coal. Willison said his company prospected and proved the eastern half of its 8-km2

Rockfall and unstable rock slopes can be con-trolled by using steel wire-rope net systems as barriers or as slope draping. The chief advantage of such systems over rigid type barriers is the flexibility of wire rope netting. This flexibility and strength permits kinetic energy dissipation with low maintenance requirements. Mining activities can produce temporary or long-term unnatural slopes and unstable rock faces that may produce rockfall hazards. Such conditions can necessitate efforts to minimize the hazard to workers, structures and equipment.

This is a shortened version of the paper ?The Methane-Air Explosion Hazard Within Coal Mine Gobs published in the 2013 volume of SME Transactions (Brune, 2013, pp. 376-390). This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Evidence from numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners, including the explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives April 5, 2010.The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions, along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe. "Mining of ore bodies that are located at great depths enforces long distances to move the excavated rock masses to the surface. The excavated rock mass contains not only ore that can be economically extracted from the face but also waste, which is usually discarded several steps further downstream in the process. As a result, a large amount of rock is transported to the surface, influencing the costs at which the ore is produced. Reducing the amount of waste rock being transported to the surface by introducing a near-to-face sorting plant would improve the in many cases strained transport system in the deep mine. In this study, one of Boliden’s cut-and-fill mines was analysed with respect to the challenges related to rock transportation and increasing mining depth. The study aims to evaluate the potential use of a new near-to-face sorting system in the operating underground mine. Discrete event simulation was used to study and analyse the rock transportation system with and without the near-to-face sorting plant. The paper shows how the underground rock transportation system and the production were influenced when the near-to-face sorting equipment was added into the current system. INTRODUCTION The locations of waste rejection in the mining processes and the cost of removing waste from the system compared with the cost and energy necessary for further comminution are important parts in the material handling system (Bowman and Bearman, 2014). In an underground mine, longer material transportation distances generate the need for further investment in the mobile fleet and ancillary equipment in order to reduce the waste from the material handling as early as possible. One of the ways of reducing the waste (coarse particle size) in material handling is by use of pre-concentration. The benefits of pre-concentration are well known (Schena et al. 1990; Feasby, 1995; Peters et al. 1999; Klein et al. 2002), as well as the factors governing the feasibility of underground pre-concentration (Peters et al., 1999) and the mining integration issues (Klein et al. 2003). In the Onaping Depth orebody in Sudbury, Ontario the study of implementing the pre-concentration resulted in increased capital costs of 6% and a reduction in the operating costs of between 20-40% (Bamber et al, 2004). In this paper, the effects on the production and the transportation system of implementing underground pre-concentration by means of a near-to-face ore sorting plant in the Kristineberg mine are modeled and analyzed using the AutoMod tool. This tool is based on discrete event simulation (DES) (Banks, 2004), allowing high flexibility in customization and enabling the user to view the production of the system before ore sorting plant integration. The sorting plant selected in the simulation is built from modules. The material is fed by conveyor and goes through the comminution, classification, sorting and service processes after which the waste is redirected to backfill headings via trucks. The system mechanically ejects the particles from the feed stream on the basis of the information obtained from both the XRT sensor’s signal and 3D laser scanner based on both density and rate of refraction of light within a particular mineral. The sorting plant could pre-concentrate the metal ore up to 300 mm size. The plant requires little auxiliary infrastructure, is easily modularized for underground installation and can be easily relocated to different areas."

The effects of air quality regulations passed in the last few years have been felt in a more pervasive way by the electric utility industry than by perhaps any other industry. I'm referring especially to those regulations dealing with the control of air emissions from stationary sources, and those specifying the quality of fuel used. Particularly, I would like to describe some of the effects that these regulations have had on the Commonwealth Edison Company. To put the subject into perspective, a brief descrip¬tion of the company will be presented first. Then, a historical outline of some of the efforts at control of electric generating station emissions will be described. Following this will be an indication of the Company's response to early State and local regulations prompted by the growing pressure for stringent envi¬ronmental control. Finally, the Company's plans to achieve com¬pliance with the most recent, Federally approved, State of Illinois regulations will be summarized.

The essential foundation upon which to build an effective marketing program in industrial minerals is the ability to produce competitively mineral products meeting precise customer specifications and to ship them promptly and on schedule. Without this prerequisite, all the other factors in a second marketing program-creative sales management, energetic solicitation, advertising, technical service, new products, etc.are without meaning. The primary image to be created in the mind of customers is that of the reliable and prompt supplier of mineral products at competitive prices and of standard, uniform quality. With this favorable image implanted, it becomes possible to integrate the other essential factors into a strong marketing program; and without this image, little can be accomplished. After having .made provision for the basic product ion position outlined, there are then two fundamental considerations in the design of a successful marketing program for industrial minerals. The first of these is that the number of potential customers for the typical industrial mineral product is, relatively small, and indeed compared to the number of customers for consumer products, the number is actually minute. The second consideration is that the customers for industrial minerals are manufacturers and producers rather than consumers. These two factors lead to a necessity that the marketing program be specifically and uniquely tailored to fit the individual mineral product to be sold and to conform to an existing pattern of distribution.

Introduction The vibration energy that travels beyond the zone of rock breakage is wasted - all it does is cause damage and annoyance. Under favorable geologic conditions, this energy may travel many kilometers before it finally drops bellow the background noise level. This has forced the introduction of more restrictive limits to the allowable vibration levels. To maintain the profitability of a mine or quarry and to comply with environmental protection legislation, blasting needs to be performed in a more predictable way that will ensure that the final results are optimal in both mining and environmental terms. Minimization of ground and induced structural vibration is, therefore, a matter of good blasting practice -not just an attempt to avoid complaints from neighbors. A new approach to blast vibration minimization is presented. The method utilizes the existence of the local minimums in the frequency spectrum of single-hole blast vibration. The results are presented as a delay map showing maximum ground or structural vibration velocity for many combinations of interhole and interrow delays. A blast engineer can use this map to select an optimal combination of delays that will produce a low vibration velocity at a selected location and, at the same time, will be acceptable from the point of view fragmentation or muck pile shape. Response of structures A typical single-story building has two distinctive forms of vibration. The first form is a translatory vibration of the building superstructure (frame), and the second form is a flexural-bending vibration of the structural elements such as walls and floors (Siskind et al., 1980). Walls and floors will have several modes of oscillation. The most important is the fundamental mode of the vibration, as this mode will have the lowest frequency, the largest amplitude and will cause the largest deformations. The vibration of walls and floors is also a source of secondary vibration within a building, due to the movement of loose objects, e.g., furniture and wall fittings (Dowding, 1985). The subjective estimate of the amplitude of a vibration by the occupants of a house will be unrealistically high due to the effect of the secondary vibrations. It is now well recognized that human perception of ground vibration begins at levels that are far below those that will produce minor damage to the most fragile structures. In mining and quarrying operations, complaints regarding vibration levels tend to be determined more by human perception or annoyance rather than by observations of damage. Ground vibrations on the order of 0.08 mm/s (0.0032 ips) (Walter and Walter, 1979; Murray, 1987) can be felt, and they are often subjectively estimated to be about 100 times greater. Amplification of ground vibration in the structure depends on the amount of energy in the ground vibration spectrum that is in the vicinity of the structure's resonant frequencies together with the damping ratio of the structure at these particular frequencies. One way to avoid significant vibration amplification in a structure is to shift the dominant part of the ground vibration away from the resonant frequency range of the structure. The presented method allows for the selection of the optimum blast timing (interhole and interrow delay times) to minimize the resultant ground vibration amplitudes in a given frequency range. It also allows the selection of suboptimal, but still acceptable, blast delay times, which may be preferable from the point of view of overall blast performance. Determining frequency ranges of importance in structures In attempting to avoid amplification of vibrations in the structure, ground vibration amplitude of frequencies close to the resonant frequencies of the building needs to be minimized. The width of the frequency-minimization region is determined by the value of damping in the building. If the damping ratio is low, then the frequency-minimization region around the resonant frequency will be relatively broad. By shifting the dominant part of the ground-vibration energy into the frequency region much higher than the resonant frequency of the building (1.5 to 2 times), it is possible to achieve efficient vibration isolation of the building. In such cases, the structural dynamic amplification of ground vibration will be less than unity. The first step in this minimization process is the determination of the structural resonant frequency. This study is a survey of the current "state-of-the-art" of commercially-available sonar tools to monitor the true shape of man-made cavities within the Hutchinson Salt of south-central Kansas. The work entailed ferreting out the available information, most of which is proprietary in nature; then examining actual existing conditions and arriving at a reasonable scientific evaluation of the method. Our studies were confined to one LPG field and two brine well operations in south-central Kansas. No field testing of any devices was performed, only questioning user firms, and studying cores, logs, and sonar surveys graciously made available by the companies we have contacted. Since these data are still somewhat proprietary, the company participants have asked that their company names be omitted from this presentation.

Although manganese is a metallic element and is widely dispersed in nature, it never occurs except as a compound in combi¬nation with other elements. Use of such compounds in the production of glass is known to have occurred in early Egypt. The dioxide of manganese was considered a compound of iron until 1774 when C.W. Schule first recognized it as an element. In the same year, a Swedish mining engineer, J.G. Gahn, became the first to isolate manganese. In 1856 development of the Bessemer process of steelmaking gave economic importance to manganese, and later, in 1882 Robert Hadfield discovered the benefits of high manganese steels. GEOLOGY Physical Properties Elemental manganese is a silver-gray metal, resembling iron but harder and more brittle and used primarily in alloys (both ferrous and non-ferrous) and a wide variety of chemical compounds. Some of the physical properties of manganese include: melting point¬1 245°C; boiling point-2 150°C; density at 20°C-7.43 g/cm3; specific heat at 25.2°C-O.115 cal/g; latent heat of fusion-63.7 cal/g; hardness on Mohs scale-5.0; linear coefficient of thermal expansion from 0 to 100°C-22 x 10-6. Mineralogy There are over one hundred minerals that contain manganese. These minerals vary from those with compositions that are pre¬dominantly manganese to those having only minor percentages of manganese. Distribution of Deposits Manganese ore deposits are found worldwide and were formed in various geological environments, but only a rather limited num¬ber of deposits have high grade manganese ore in sufficient quan¬tities to be mined and utilized economically on an industrial scale. It is worth noting the fact that almost all of the significant deposits can be classified into two types of deposits: marine chemical sed¬imentary deposits, and residual (secondary) enrichment deposits. There are, however, a much larger number of geological types but these are not of commercial significance at this time. Sedimentary deposits are the most common and are usually stratiform or lenticular. Manganese minerals were formed by a chemical process during the deposition of marine sediments. They usually contain manganese oxides and carbonate minerals, some¬times interbedded together or with other sedimentary rocks such as limestone or shale. Examples of this type of deposit are the Russian ore bodies of Nikopol and Tchiatoura, as well as the Kalahari deposits in South Africa and deposits of Groote Elyandt in Aus¬tralia. Residual deposits were formed in a different way: by alteration of existing manganese deposits or by concentration of the manga¬nese minerals when other minerals were washed away by weath¬ering or ground water processes. The Nsuta deposit in Ghana, the Amapa deposit in Brazil, the Moanda deposit in Gabon, and nodules in the residual clays of the US Southern Appalachians are examples of this type of geological process. In the case of the Ghana and the Amapa deposits, this is only true for the outer layers of the deposit containing oxide minerals, the inner part being comprised of car¬bonate minerals including manganese carbonate, probably from marine origin. Some sedimentary and residual-type deposits have been metamorphosed, giving rise to small high grade ore bodies. These deposits are regionally metamorphosed, occurring in mar¬bles, slates, quartzites, schists, and gneisses. Some of these deposits, such as the Franklin, NJ, deposit are rich enough to be commercial without secondary enrichment; however, most of the exploitable deposits have been secondarily enriched. Due to the diversity and complexity of manganese deposits, both with respect to deposition and chemistry, a wide range of impurities are almost invariably present in the ores. Table 1 shows that the reserves (i.e., a measured resource that can be economically and legally extracted) are estimated at 814 x 106 tons of contained Mn, which equates to more than a 100 year supply at the current level of production. The reserve base is made up of the marginally economic reserves and sub-economic re¬sources and are some 4.5 times greater than the proven reserves. Also apparent from study of Table I is the fact that some 75% of manganese reserves are found in two countries, the USSR and South Africa. On the other hand, North America (i.e., the United States and Canada) have few significant deposits. The USBH Mining Systems and Ground Control Generic Research Center funded a project leading to the improved planning of airflow and refrigeration in underground mines experiencing hot working conditions. The project was broken down into approximately five phases: 1. Visiting some of the known hot mines in the U.S. and sending out a questionnaire to determine other mines which might be experiencing hot working conditions in the future. 2. Choosing two mines in which to conduct measurements to determine the insitu rock thermal conductivity and diffusivity, and comparing these values with laboratory determined values. 3. Investigating computer programs available for mine climate simulation, and testing these programs with case study examples from the two mines where the rock thermal properties were measured. 4. Considering improved ways of estimating the wetness factor and experimenting with the use of heat flux meters to more directly measure the rock heat inflow into the airstream. 5. Applying the results of these investigations to simulating the climate for future mine development and production areas at the two- mines. The project is approximately two thirds completed. At the time of writing, the insitu measurements at one of the mines are still being recorded. This paper will be describing the procedures and results of the insitu rock thermal property measurements, and give a brief description of some of the simulated results obtained for a mechanised cut and fill stope case study from the Homestake Gold Hine in South Dakota.

The Macmillan Pass tungsten property (MacTung) is the largest known copper-tungsten, calcic, exoskarn deposit in the Western Hemisphere. Located on the border between the Yukon and Northwest Territories in northwestern Canada, the deposit crops out on Mt. Allen within the Selwyn Mountain Range. It was discovered in 1962 by a subsidiary of AMAX Inc. and has since been explored by 16,300 meters of surface and underground diamond drilling and by 800 meters of underground development. Geologic reserves are in excess of 30 million tons, grading slightly less than 1.0% WO3. Scheelite (CaWO3 ) is the main mineral of economic interest. Accessible by road, the property is not in production. Previously estimated reserves at MacTung have been unable to fully utilize all the geological controls on mineralization. In the past three years, however, an intensive program has been underway to improve our understanding of the deposit and to use the resulting information in a more precise way. This paper will discuss the key aspects of the geology as they specifically relate to reserve estimation and will demonstrate how these controls are being used in a geostatistical model of the deposit.

"Usage of Supercritical CO2 in place of high pressure freshwater has proven to be a potential breakthrough in the technique of fracturing. Tapping of carbon footprints from feasible sources like industries can be used to manufacture Supercritical CO2 required for fracking. Supercritical CO2, being less viscous than water, creates complex and coherent micro-fractures which can connect many more natural fractures greatly, increasing maximally the fractures’ conductivity leading to an increment in production. The better clean-up property of Supercritical CO2 provides auxiliary benefits of immediate evaluation of fracture zones, usage of an optimized quantity of mesh proppant and elimination of the need of swabbing. Also, Coal has a stronger affinity for CO2 than for CH4. When CO2 is present, CH4 on coal is replaced by CO2. This also ensures rigorous recovery of gas from the coal beds. Use of Supercritical CO2 will obliterate many problems as the CO2 used for fracturing is either sequestered beneath the crust or is recovered at the surface and reused. Therefore, injecting CO2 into coalbeds achieves not only enhanced CBM recovery, but also greenhouse sequestration underground. INTRODUCTION Coalbed Methane At various times in the geologic past, earth had dense forests in low-lying wetland areas. Due to natural processes such as flooding, these forests were buried underneath the soil. As more and more soil deposited over them, these dead plant remains were compressed. As the process continued the plant matter was protected from biodegradation and oxidation, usually by mud or acidic water. Under high pressure and high temperature, dead vegetation was slowly converted to coal. The omnibus process of formation of coal, thus, comprises of conversion of dead plant matter into peat, followed by its conversion to lignite, then sub-bituminous coal, after that bituminous coal, and lastly anthracite. This process of enrichment of coal as it is progressively forced deeper into an ambience with higher temperature and pressure involves biological and geological processes that take place over a long period and is called coalification. During coalification, large amounts of methane-rich gas are generated and stored within the coal on internal surfaces; hence comes coalbed methane. Coalbed methane (CBM), a gas formed as part of the geological processes that are responsible for the generation of coal, is adsorbed into the solid matrix of the coal during its formation process. Coalbed methane is distinct from a typical sandstone or other conventional gas reservoirs, as the methane is adsorbed and not absorbed. The methane is in a near-liquid state, lining the inside of pores within the coal. The open fractures in the coal that result from the liberation of volatile materials (and subsequent contraction due to the liberation) from the coal due to the high temperature and pressure conditions encountered, called cleats, may also contain free gas or can be saturated with water."

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, conducted field tests on acidic copper tailing as part of its program to devise, improve, and demonstrate technology for stabilizing mining and mineral processing wastes. Results will be presented from successful 1/8-acre and 1-1/2-acre demonstration revegetation plots established in 1973 and 1974 on an abandoned copper tailing pond located on public land adjacent to Holden Village, Wash. The tailing was neutralized with treatments of either dolomitic lime or limerock and fertilized with processed sewage sludge and/or commercial fertilizer. Plant growth covering 60 percent of the surface was achieved on both test plots. Regar brome, Tegmar intermediate wheatgrass, and tall wheatgrass provided the best plant growth and surface coverage. In neutralizing the tailing, the target pH of 6.8 was not achieved; however, good plant growth occurred in areas where the pH ranged from 2.9 to 5.8.

A physical elastic seismic model, based on the Peoria oil field was constructed and used to produce multi mode cross-borehole seismic data. Because this was a physical model, it was necessary to deal with a complex wave field consisting of compressional waves, shear waves, and converted waves. The recorded raw data were complex, have no resemblance to the inter-well geology, and were difficult or impossible to interpret. These unintelligible data sets were extensively computer processed. Detailed, accurate, images of the inter-well structure, and reflecting horizons were obtained as a result of this processing. This investigation demonstrates that excellent, accurate images of the inter-well geology can be obtained by skilled seismic cross-well data acquisition and extensive careful computer processing.

A shield on a tunneling machine has two basic purposes. Firstly to provide temporary support in unstable ground, maintaining the integrity of the bore and protecting the operators, and secondly, in conjunction with other sealing devices, to prevent the ingress of water. In any specific tunnel, unstable ground and water may or may not occur together. Further, there are a number of different ground behaviors that may be termed unstable and these must be defined in order to determine the most suitable type of machine. Beyond the shield itself, the cutterhead and the mucking system design are critical in successfully traversing difficult geology. In any but the shortest tunnels, variations in the geological conditions and the requirement of an acceptable advance rate can impose increasing degrees of sophistication in the machine design. In this paper we will review current designs of shielded type machines and their application, and discuss new developments which blend hard and soft ground tunneling technology. We will also indicate that in some conditions, although first impressions seem to favor a shielded machine, in fact an open gripper TBM may be the wisest choice.

The flotation response to amine collector and its adsorption on the mineral surface was studied as a function of pH and collector concentration. The flotation response increased in the order anorthite + intermediate plagih clases + albite, while adsorption of amine obeyed the Freundlich equation r = A.Cn. This adsorption is proposg to be due to a covalent bonding between the AlOH surface pups of the plagioclase altered outer layer and the amino group of the collector. Finally, the study showed thatmtial dissolution of the solid phase provides the necessary conditions for amine attachment on the mineral particles and consequent flotation.

INTRODUCTION Laboratory testing for magnetic concentration circuit design is a requirement, just as it is for most other types of concentration. Natural variations in raw materials allow on1 y the broadest of generalities to be made regarding magnetic separation. Further, magnetic fields are geometry dependent, leaving fundamental models of a separator overly dependent upon the exact conditions for which the models were derived. Despite this, an understanding of the basics of magnetic separation and of the problem to be attacked can result in rapid progress towards the final circuit design with a relatively simple testing program. Magnetic Separation Basic Principles A magnetic field can readily be understood in terms of lines of flux. A familiar demonstration of these lines of flux is the pattern of iron filings on a sheet of paper when a magnet is placed underneath. Lines of flux2 are measured in Gauss (1 line/cm2) or Tesla (10000 gauss). Regions of high field strength have a greater number of lines. Field direction is indicated by a convergence of lines. When a particle is placed in a magnetic field it cuts the lines of flux and alters them in one of three basic patterns. These patterns are referred to as diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic. Diamagnetic materials have electronic structures which react to oppose an applied magnetic field. This opposition acts to locally reduce the applied field slightly. The visualization is that lines of flux diverge and go around the particle. Because of this divergence or opposition, a diamagnetic particle will tend to move towards regions of lower flux density. That is to say that the particle will be repelled by a magnetic field. Aluminum oxide and napthalene are examples of diamagnetic materials. Paramagnetic materials have an electronic structure which increases an applied magnetic field. Although these materials also exhibit diamagnetism, they have randomly oriented impaired electrons which align with the magnetic field. Disc Cutter Wear is influenced by several geological and technical factors and excessive wear can have a major impact on the excavation efficiency of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). Disc cutter replacement events cause a disruption to the construction schedule and costs, and should be minimized throughout the project to the extent possible. A well-executed cutterhead inspection and maintenance plan can help mitigate abrupt cutterhead interventions and reduce its effect on project schedule and cost. This paper examines cutterhead inspection and disc cutter replacement events as well as subsequent wear data recorded in the first 7km of the 10.3 km long, 6.3 m diameter Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) project in Toronto, Ontario. The CBT alignment is mainly through Georgian Bay Formation shale.

The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in the spring of 1988, one year before the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg openpit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600 m (1968 ft) above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought its latest open-pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. Freeport Indonesia's (FI) copper-gold mining operations are located in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of Indonesia on the western side of the island of New Guinea. Fl's six ore deposits are all located within a 10- x 10-km' (3.9- x 3.9-sq mile) Contract of Work area. They are all between the elevations of 2900 and 4300 m (9515 and 14,100 ft) above sea level, some 96 km (60 miles) from the island's southern coast. A 118-km (74-mile) access route connects FT's port site of Amamapare on the Arafura Sea to the project area. The first section is an 18-km (11-mile) barge waterway. The final 100-km (63mile) is a two-lane gravel highway. The highway terminates 9 km (5.5 miles) beyond the FI townsite at the project's central mill, some 2850 m (9250 ft) above sea level. The mining areas are separated from the mill by a 780-m (2560-ft) sheer cliff face. The world's longest free span tramway system, with a total length of more than 1.6 km (1 mile), is the only means of access for men and materials between the mill and the surface mines. Weight restrictions for the tramway for equipment considered for the project are 15.4 t (17 st). The minimum clear width dimension of two tunnels along the portsite access road is 5.6 m (18.4 ft).
