Green algae have been found to be much more resistant to heavy metals than blue-green algae. Several mechanisms for resistance to toxicity have been recognized in laboratory strains of Cyanidium, Chlorella and Chlamycomonas. Cyanidium and Chlorella both grow at low pH in acid mine water. Cyanidium removes metal ions from solution by precipitation as metal sulfides whereas Chlorella complexes metal ions to the cell surface i.e. cell wall) and therefore functions as an efficient ion exchange vehicle. We have shown that Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and Na+ are of critical importance in both the resistance and bioaccumulation of toxic heavy metals.

In the Fall of 1987 The Wellmore Coal division of The United Company installed a fines separation circuit in its #20 plant near Big Rock, Va. The addition of the fines circuit included a bank of classifying cyclones and two flotation units; one a conventional 4 cell, 34 m3 Wemco cell, the other an 2.4 meter diameter by 7.6 meter tall, 28.3 m3 column flotation cell. The new fine coal separation circuit is depicted in Figure 1. The column flotation cell is manufactured by the Deister Concentrator Company, Inc., under the trade name Flotaire. The Deister Flotaire column cell utilizes a counter current flow arrangement and a different means of generating air bubbles than that of conventional mechanical flotation cells found in coal processing plants. Other features include diffusers for additional air supply and a froth washer. This cell is one of the few commercial scale column cells processing coal.

Microorganisms have been widely used for hydrometallurgical operation and effluent treatments(Smith, et. al., 1991a; Gadd, et. al., 1986; Darnall, 1986; Paponettis, et. al., 1991; Mihaylov, et. al., 1991; Rusin, et. al., 1991; Noble, et. al., 1991; Yang, et. al., 1991). In recent years there is a growing interest in using microorganism for flocculation of minerals fines and flotation collector (Smith, et. al., 1991b, 1991c; Misra, et. al., 1991a, 1991b, 1992a, 1992b). It is envisioned that the utilization of nonpathogenic microorganism and/or extracellular surfactant derived from microorganism as a flotation collector will replace some of the environmentally toxic flotation collectors and at the sometime improve flotation efficiency. The selection screening, and judicious selection of appropriate microorganism as flotation collector has been a challenge to process engineers. Over the past five years, continued research at the University of Nevada has shown that certain microorganism Mycobacterium phlei (M. phlei) can be a good flocculating agent and has potential to be used as a flotation collector (Dubel, et. al., 1992; Misra, et. al., 1991a, 1991b, 1992a, 1992b; Smith, et. al., 1991d; Chen, et. al., 1992a, 1992b)).

A new high intensity grinding technology has been developed and is now being commercialized by Hicom International of Australia. This has led to the development and manufacture of Hicom 120 grinding mills which are now being sold internationally for a range of mining industry applications. The first commercial process application has been for the diamond sector, where the ability of the mill to remove host kimberlite rock by attritioning, with no damage to the thereby liberated diamonds, is seen to be a most beneficial attribute. There are, however, many other mineral industry applications for this mill.

Introduction Although innovative coal extraction technology can be approached from many angles, this paper focuses on three: innovation in response to rising costs, to changing mining conditions, and to regulatory issues. Before exploring these three subjects, however, a basic question needs to be raised. Why Innovation? Coal is widely heralded, and quite correctly so, as the United States' "ace in the hole." It has been said that the U.S. is to coal what the Arabs are to oil. The implication is that we have nearly inexhaustible reserves - that coal is cheap, plentiful, and easy to extract. Indeed, because our current productive capacity is estimated to be 15-20% greater than demand, we have been given a false sense of security about the ease of future coal extraction. Therefore, innovative measures are being concentrated on developing technologies for the demand side of coal, including power generation, synthetic fuels, and industrial applications. What is often forgotten is that the unit cost of producing energy from these new technologies depends critically on the cost of the coal feedstock -in some cases the coal consumed accounts for more than one-third the total cost. Thus, while the developers of the end-use technologies struggle to improve the overall thermal efficiency of their process by one or two per¬centage points to make the energy produced competitive in the marketplace, they often are unaware of the risk of a 3 to 6% increase in coal costs wiping out the expensive, hard-earned results of their research. Energy planners are just beginning to realize that coal is not a uniform commodity available at low cost in infinite quantities. Coal is a heterogeneous material whose cost and quality vary widely with local conditions. To produce the massive amounts of projected coal-based energy at reasonable costs, we urgently need devel¬opments in extraction technology, as well as in end-use technology. Thus, coal extraction, coal conversion and utilization, and end -use energy consumption must be viewed as highly interdependent parts of an energy supply network (Fig. 1). And current emphasis on conversion and utilization must be balanced by more emphasis on upstream technologies, including coal extraction. Even more important, the impacts of innovation (or the lack thereof) in any one technology area in the energy supply network need to be discussed and understood by those working in each of the other areas. Why innovation in coal ex¬traction technology? Figuratively, we are all in the "coal boat" together - geologists, miners, transporters, processors, power producers, distributors, and consumers. Innovation is required from each of these sectors to overcome the obstacles that prevent greater use of our most abundant national energy resource. All other links in the coal energy supply network depend on large volumes of coal produced at reasonable costs. Declines in productivity, therefore, must be reversed; the more difficult mining conditions that will be encountered call for new methods and equipment, and regulatory issues must be resolved if the coal ex¬traction link is to be a strength rather than a weakness in the planned U.S. transition to an economy based more on coal and less on imported petroleum. Trees are an essential ingredient of sound reclamation in nearly all surface mining regions. There are, however, possible problems in current reclamation regulations and practices which need to be evaluated and remedied. Recognition and accomodation of growth requirements for trees and other plants will greatly increase reclamation success. Surface mining encompasses a series of processes from a pre-mining baseline study to bond release following revegetation. Land owners, and society, have a great interest in subsequent plant growth on reclaimed areas and in future land values.

The ability to increase and maintain dragline productivity is a key mine driver for the Coal Creek Mine. The Coal Creek Mine is owned by Arch Coal Inc subsidiary Thunder Basin Coal Company; located near Gillette, WY. Coal Creek Mine overburden stripping is primarily accomplished by a BE-1570W walking dragline in combination with cast blasting and dozer assist for bench preparation. The two main variables impacting dragline performance are maintenance reliability and operator skill levels. The mine?s most recent process improvement efforts have focused on its most valuable asset - the operator. Various techniques have been used to reduce variability in the dragline operator?s digging performance. Utilization and communication of operator performance data, statistics, and video reviews have been of great value towards achieving this goal. Operators are given a chance to critique operational tendencies from a third-person point of view, and are also presented statistical feedback to support observations. From these sessions, operators gain knowledge as to what portions of the dig cycle can be improved in order to reduce cycle time and increase productivity. BACKGROUND The BE-1570W walking dragline was commissioned at Coal Creek in November 2006 after relocating from Arch of Wyoming located in southeast Wyoming. The first two years of operation the machine was performing simple side cast stripping due to the low ratio. Coal Creek Mine is a multiple seam operation with overburden thickness ranging from 24 to 140 feet. Early in 2009 the ratio increased to the point where transitioning to cast blast/extended bench stripping was necessary. The current mining conditions consist of a mixture of both stripping styles where the ratio allows. The dragline crews running the machine consist of a mixture of experience levels ranging from 30+ years to only a few years. It has been in this digging environment and slightly inexperienced personnel that the focus has been set for improvement in dragline performance.

Much progress has been made in the application of geostatistics to hard rock ore deposits.1,2,3 4,8 Progress in the application of geostatistics to coal deposits has developed over a period of time out of hard rock technology.5,7 Exploratory drilling in many hard rock deposits is frequently significantly more productive than exploratory drilling in coal deposits. For example, hundreds of feet of drilling and/or many drill setups are frequently necessary to obtain a few samples from a typical 4 to 6 foot thick coal seam. With hard rock deposits, which are frequently thick or volumetric, less drilling dead work is involved in sampling the deposit. To produce a variogram, which is the basic element needed for geostatistical analysis, a few well positioned holes drilled into a hard rock deposit where the core(s) can be divided into many sections can produce a detailed variogram. To produce a similar type variogram in coal, it is necessary to drill many dozens of holes with much of the core length consisting of overburden data which is frequently of only secondary importance. To apply geostatistics to coal, not only are many separate sample sites needed, but frequently a problem exists in that the interval distance between samples cannot be controlled with the ease that hard rock drilling intervals can be controlled where it is only necessary to cut core segments according to some preassigned interval of distance. Because the uses of existing coal deposit samples are frequently handicapped by irregular sample distances and lack of sampling density along certain directions needed for the development of variograms, the application of geostatistics to coal deposits frequently does not proceed with the same efficiency and rapidity as when these techniques are applied to ore deposits. Grid-fitting was developed by the writers, as a logical and evolutionary improvement over the long and successful application of geostatistics to coal seams.6,9 Grid-fitting combines the trending of variance as well as other aspects of probability theory to optimize informational yields from the commonly less productive data derived from coal exploratory programs. Grid-fitting is basically a technique where a hypothesis involving numerous grid patterns, where each pattern is of a given geometry, size and direction is repeatedly matched against actual sample data to determine which match results in the closest fit of the hypothesis to the data. To determine the closest fit, a special index known as a selectivity index was developed. The selectivity index is basically the product of the mean and variance of the variances contained within each of the grids. hence, if SI is the selectivity index then [SI = Xs E (S i - Xs) /N] where [X]s is the mean of individual grid variances Si2 for any pattern of given geometry, direction and size.

Large volume, highangle conveying by “conveyors with cover belt, dates back to the early 1950s, when such systems were employed at the bucket wheel excavator boom conveyor in German lignite mines to increase the depth of cut without increasing the boom length. Various systems were developed, patented and built. These systems were not a lasting success for various reasons, which are noted by Rasper[1]. In his 1958 “Review of Cover Belt Systems,” Rasper summarizes the characteristics which are worth pursing and those that should be abandoned. The former are akin to good conveyor engineering. The sandwich belt conveyor model. The first sandwich belt conveyor model allowed calculation of the required hugging pressure to develop the bulk material’s internal friction and preclude material slideback. A modern, accurate version of the sandwich belt conveyor model is presented in Fig. 1. This model depicts accurately a derating of the material cross-section allowing an ample belt edge distance that can tolerate normal belt misalignment without material spillage. The calculations must thus recognize that only part of the hugging pressure is imparted onto the material with the remainder transferred belt edge to belt edge affecting a material seal. Mathematical development of the sandwich belt model is covered by Dos Santos and Frizzell in their 1983 article, “Evolution of Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyors.”"

In a flotation froth (and foam), air bubbles become larger due to coalescence, causing less hydrophobic particles to drop off. A bubble-coarsening model has been developed by calculating the changes in Plateau border area as a function of the initial bubble size at the base of a foam, liquid fraction, and foam height and then relating the predicted Plateau border area to the critical rupture thickness of lamellae film. The model predicts that bubble coarsens with increasing froth height, decreasing frother dosage, and decreasing aeration rate. The model predictions are in good agreement with actual bubble size measurements.

"INTRODUCTION This report summarizes a research about mines which are transitioning from surface to underground mines. It is a guide to make strategic decision in these increasing amount of mines. Capital and operating costs are linked with major strategic decisions in the exploitation of an ore body. This is the reason to analyze costs related to this transitioning world trend. There are multiple reasons for transitioning from Open-Pit (OP) to Underground (UG) mining. The primary economic incentive for going UG is that the cost per unit of ore from OP mining eventually exceeds that from UG extraction. This is due to the excessive amount of waste that must be extracted when the depth of the pit increases. In addition, the reduced footprint of UG operations contributes to diminish the environmental impact on the surface. Furthermore, it becomes more difficult to find new, easily accessible ore deposits. Then, a cost model helps to guide strategic decisions in the transition from OP-to-UG mines. Objectives • Propose a methodology to guide strategic decisions in the transition from OP to UG mining. • Create an integrated cost model based on existing OP and UG individual cases. • Identify and characterize a group of mines transitioning from OP to UG. • Analyze operating and capital costs of a particular transitioning from OP to UG mine. MAIN CONCEPTS Open Pit Mining (OP) The main decisions in OP mines are: Cut-off grade, Stripping Ratio (SR), equipment size, stockpiling, pushback sequencing and processing capacity. The stripping ratio is measured as the tonnage of waste required to be removed to reach and extract one tonne of ore. The material extracted from an OP exploitation can be classified as waste and ore. This classification depends on the cut-off grade. The cut-off grade indicates the minimum amount of material with economic value in a block. The waste from the mine is going to the waste dump and the ore is going to stockpiles where will be store and then going to the processing plant (leaching or concentrator). The waste of this process is going to the tailing pond big pools. And the product is sell in the market. Another important issue is the mining capacity which is going to define the investment in mining equipment. Underground Mining (UG) The first decision to be made in order to open an underground mine is selecting the mining method. Caving methods are the more productive and have lower operating costs. There are three caving methods: Block Caving (BC), Panel Caving (BC) and Sublevel Caving (BC). The access development could be an horizontal adit or a straight or downspiral decline. A shaft could be used for inclined or vertical access. Other key issues are: equipment capacity, cut-off grade and production sequencing."

Thank you Mr. Chairman. For more than 15 years a debate has been taking place among students of massive sulphide deposits as to the origin of these deposits. Prior that time it was widely accepted that the deposits were of hydrothermal, epigenetic and even replacement origin (Wilson, 14). Kinkel, Knight, Stanton and others advanced hypotheses which would explain the, formation of the deposits by different, largely syngenetic, volcanogeric processes. I was fortunate in having become involved in exploration for these deposits at about the time the debate was beginning and thus had an opportunity to apply with some success, some of the new and old ideas for formation of massive sulphide deposits. The deposits which I will discuss today are all located n northwestern Quebec, in the Abitibi orogenic belt. Mattagami Lake Mines is about 100 miles due south and Noranda's Horne Mine about 200 miles south of James Bay. In 1959 I prepared a talk which was presented to the 1960 CIM Convention calling attention to the spatial and possible genetic relationship between the ore sulphides of the Mattagami Area, Quebec and the tuffite, as well as the structures which controlled the ore. In this present paper I would like to cover the following points: (1) The general criteria used by the epigeneticists to support their contention that the deposits were formed after the enclosing rocks.

"In this paper, a case study from Çayeli Bakir Isletmeleri A.S. (Rize, Turkey) about the selective flotation of copper minerals from sphalerite is discussed. Çayeli Cu-Zn Sulfide Ore contains different ore types, such as yellow ore, clastic ore, bornite-clastic ore, bornite-yellow ore, and black ore. For some of these ore types, selective flotation of copper and zinc is very difficult presumably due to presence of secondary copper minerals such as bornite, chalcocite and covellite, and also surface oxidation. These factors affect Cu-Zn selectivity due to activation of sphalerite particles in the ore during the process. The main objective of this work was to improve Cu-Zn selectivity by optimization of the pulp chemistry for different ore types of Çayeli ore. After preliminary flotation tests investigating effects of different chemical conditions, a plant survey was performed to determine the plant performance and sources of the problems when problematic bornite-clastic ore is treated in the plant. Various chemical conditions are tested in the laboratory scale test for better depression of sphalerite in copper flotation circuit. Combination of Na2S+ZnSO4+MBS was found to be the most effective depressant scheme. INTRODUCTION Ore variability is one of the most important factors affecting performance of a process plant both in short and long term planning. The geometallurgical modelling becomes a common tool to determine ore variability problems and develop the most efficient solution during life of mine (1, 2). Flowsheet design and equipment selection and sizing are usually done based on the results of ore variability test works. However, in some cases ore variability may not be foreseen during the design stage and therefore the solutions should be developed based on the existing flowsheet and equipment in the plant. In this situation, ore characterisation, problem statement and diagnostic testing should be applied step by step. The problem could be due to changing feed grade, mineralogical characteristics, grindability and surface characteristics when flotation is involved. The variability in feed grade with fixed mineralogy can be handled with relatively simple modifications (i.e. adjusting throughput or equipment capacity) in the plant. Variability in ore mineralogy is the most complex and difficult problem to tackle. Because, mineralogical variations could bring variations in mineral composition, texture and liberation. These variations can potentially lead to the variations in grindability of the ore and flotation behaviour. Variations in grindability are usually managed by optimization of operational parameters in grinding circuit, as it would be costly to replace the existing equipment in the circuit (3). The variations in flotation behaviour are mainly due to variations in mineral types and distribution, texture and surface oxidation. One or all of these factors could be observed in a flotation operation. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation both in plant and lab scale should be conducted for definition of source of the problem. The testwork to solve the problem and retrieve the performance is planned and conducted depending on the source of the problem (4, 5)."

Well-designed and maintained haul roads are the key to minimizing truck haulage onroad hazards and costs, as well as increasing productivity. In practice, however, designing and managing a haul road for optimal performance is often difficult to achieve, especially when resources assigned to design and construction are constrained. By understanding how a road design is developed from geometric, structural, functional and maintenance considerations and, critically, the interplay between these components in design and operation, optimal performance can be achieved. This paper briefly summarizes the evolution of mine haul road design, from the seminal USBM work of Kaufman and Ault in 1977, through to current geometric, structural, functional and maintenance management design components. These augmented design and management guidelines have been developed over the past decade, both in response to the requirements of mine operators for safer and more efficient haulage systems, the truck manufacturers’ requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment and the recognition of human factors as a significant contributor to haulage accidents. While the human factor is the most problematic to address in a road design, the paper shows that the more that is known about human error, the better a road can be designed to accommodate those actions or non-standard practices that would, on a poorly designed road, invariably escalate an error into an accident.

Real growth in the economy, increasing demand for electricity, and consumer stockpiling for a possible United Mineworkers of America (UMW) strike in October made 1984 a banner year for coal. Production and consumption climbed to record heights. Precautionary purchases brought inventories close to the peak levels of early 1981 when coal miners walked out for 72 days. Production slowed in the fourth quarter after labor and management concluded negotiations without a walkout. But output in every major coal producing state showed significant gains during the year US coal production totaled 807 Mt (890 million st) in 1984. This is a 13.8% increase over 1983 output. Lower production rates, principally in Appalachia, and sustained demand in the final quarter put downward pressure on coal stocks by the end of the year. Demand All market sectors experienced greater requirements for coal in 1984. Electric utility coal consumption increased 6.3%; exports climbed 4.8%; coke plants consumed 18.9% more coal; coal requirements in the other industrial sector expanded by 11.8%; and consumption in the residential/commercial sector rose 8.1%. Domestic consumption of coal reached a record 718 Mt (791 million st) in 1984. This is a 7.4% gain over the previous consumption high of 668 Mt (737 million st) in 1983. Electric Utilities The 4.6% increase in electric power generation in 1984 was coupled with expanding coal use relative to other energy sources. This resulted in a 6.3% rise in coal consumption, totaling 603 Mt (664 million st) for the year. The heavy media process is now being used extensively throughout the world for the gravity concentration of a great number of different minerals. The process is a commercial adaptation of the heavy liquid procedure which has been used in laboratories for many years to separate mineral of different specific gravities. In the heavy media process, a suspension of finely divided particles in water is used to increase the apparent specific weight of the fluid to the desired separating point. The original heavy media process used sand, galena, pyrite and occasionally other materials as the solid constituent of the separating suspensions. As the process developed, the need for a more universal media meeting the following requirements was recognized: 1. High specific gravity. 2. Resistance to abrasion. 3. Resistance to corrosion, 4. Readily reduced to a suitable size consist for suspension in water. 5. Available in quantity at economical price levels. 6. Easy to recover by a simple method.

The South African Iron and Steel Company Ltd operates a large Iron Ore Mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The Mine is situated on the farm, Sishen, approximately 600 km west of Johannesburg. The annual capacity of the Mine is 100 million ton of ore and waste and the present production level is 60 million ton. The Mine operates continuously for 6 days a week. The primary equipment used to maintain the above production are 55, 154 t trucks (Wabco and Unit Rig) and 14 P & H shovels. During 1979 an urgent feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched at the Mine. This was due to the unrealistic escalation in the cost of diesel fuel and the appeal from the South African Government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technical feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50% and the diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 million litres in the next 10 years. Management subsequently approved the implementation of the system at Sishen. The construction of 7,7 km of line and the conversion of 66, 154 t trucks were completed in March 1982.

The mining industry appears to be slowly rebounding. But many individuals and company officials are still smarting from the beating they received during the recent recession. As a result, companies have taken the "lean and mean" approach. As pointed out at the Oct. 24-26, 1984 SME-AIME Fall Meeting in Denver, CO, companies are placing more emphasis on optimizing their operations through more efficient mining and processing technologies and equipment. Empathizing with the mining industry's woes was the meeting's welcoming luncheon speaker, John D. Withrow, Jr., executive vice president product development for Chrysler Corp. Withrow paralleled Chrysler's problems of a few years ago with the current problems facing the US mining industry. He said Chrysler's come-back centered around its engineering and technical personnel, who regained "their seat at the head table." "In short," Withrow said, "we had lost the competitive edge. By cutting costs and people and improving our products we got everybody to believe we could." The 2700 participants at the Fall Meeting attended technical sessions geared toward turning mining back into a productive and profitable industry. Sessions and symposia included papers on precious metals extraction, crushing and grinding innovations, geomechanics, environmental control, health and safety, and various commodities. This article briefly highlights some of the papers presented. To order preprints of these technical papers, see ME, December 1984, pages 1620 and 1621. Computers Gain Mining Acceptance High tech has reached mining. As evidenced by many papers, computers have become valuable tools in many applications. These include tailings ponds operation and waste management; truck dispatching; mine design, simulation, and scheduling; monitoring; and reclamation. Mine planning is generally labor intensive and requires a considerable amount of the planner's time. P. K. Chatterjee, X. Chung, and Y. Jianjy described a computer-generated interactive graphics approach to under-ground coal mine planning that lessens the manhours involved in producing plans. The computer program examined exploratory borehole information. This included coal seam thickness, tonnage, quality constraints, and the nature of their distribution. Layout designs were then initiated and a probabilistic simulation performed to determine production levels of different extraction strategies. The interactive graphics approach gives planners the ability to quickly evaluate several layout alternatives and select the best one. For surface coal mines, M. A. White, of Arch Minerals Corp., explained several computer programs that aided in his company's surface mine plans. Several drill hole database and modeling pack¬ages are available. But Arch tech¬nicians developed specific pro¬grams for model strip areas. They were used to form long-term pro¬jections for various area and semi¬area stripping operations. They also generated reports on yard¬age, tonnage, quality, and ratio in¬formation. The information is used in budgeting, to compare mine plans, and to analyze acqui¬sition candidates. While computer-based truck dispatching systems have been used in mining for some time, earlier systems were run on ex¬pensive mainframe or high per¬formance minicomputers. As such, computer-based truck dis¬patching systems have been too expensive for all but the largest mines. "Colorado School of MinesResearchers at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) have developed computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models to study gas distributions and explosion and fire hazards in longwall gobs. In underground coal mines, methane continuously emitted from surrounding strata mixes with air from active mine workings and may form explosive gas zones (EGZs). Some western United States coal mines are also prone to spontaneous combustion (spon com). Insight into oxygen concentrations within the gob is crucial for assessing spon com hazards and mitigation strategies. Nitrogen injection used in conjunction with progressive gob sealing can reduce EGZs and spon com hazards by forming a dynamic seal that separates the methane in the gob from the air that ingresses from the face. This paper describes CFD modeling simulations studying the formation of such dynamic seals by optimizing the nitrogen injection locations. The impact of nitrogen on oxygen ingress and formation of EGZs is discussed. Optimum nitrogen injection quantities and injection locations were determined. Dynamic seal formation is most effective if the headgate nitrogen injection locations are split between the first crosscut inby the face and a second location about 300 m (1,000 ft) further inby. INTRODUCTION Underground longwall coal mine ventilation systems are designed to dilute hazardous gases and to provide breathable air to miners working in the area. Methane gas is liberated as the mining process extracts the coal and disturbs the surrounding strata. Methane mixes with the ventilation air and often produces explosive gas zones (EGZs) within longwall gobs (Brune 2013). Past CFD modeling research of underground coal mine ventilation systems has shown the effects of face air quantity on EGZs (Worrall 2012) and nitrogen injection to control spon com (Balusu et al. 2005; Ren et al. 2012; Ren et al. 2011; Smith and Yuan, 2008; Yuan and Smith, 2014). Other modeling approaches include network ventilation models of oxygen ingress (Dziurzynski and Wasilewski, 2012), and coupled Linear Network CFD algorithms (Wedding 2014). In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), CSM researchers are using Fluent®, a CFD software package by ANSYS, Inc., to model gas compositions and flows in underground longwall gobs. Figure 1 shows a progressively sealed gob with a U-type ventilation system in a three entry development. As the longwall advances, seals are constructed along the headgate in the crosscuts between the center entry and the gob. Additional gob isolation seals are built to block off the headgate entries inby the face. Nitrogen is injected through the seals in the first two crosscuts on the headgate side and at the first crosscut inby the face on the tailgate side, as shown in Figure 1."

The Black Hawk district in New Mexico hosts an unusual type of deposit: arsenide five-element veins. These deposits are Ag-Co-Ni-Bi-As-bearing carbonate veins with local concentrations of U, Pb, Zn, Sb, and other elements. They are high-grade silver deposits (1000s g/t Ag), but low tonnage (<1 Mt) and difficult to find. By 1881, claims were staked and a town developed. It is estimated that >$1,500,000 was produced in 1883–1893, when Ag prices dropped due to the 1893 Ag panic. Solid Silver Mining Co. produced $600,000 from the Black Hawk mine; one car load contained $28,000 worth of silver! The town of Black Hawk grew to 125 population by November 1883. By the end of 1893, the town was vacant; nothing remains. The district was idle until 1916, and the mines operated sporadically since because of lack of available capital, water issues, and difficulty in finding ore shoots. The area is a favorite for mineral collectors. Tungsten was found in the district in 1935 in quartz veins associated with pegmatites. Metal production from 1881–1960 is estimated as 3,000 lbs Cu, 1,000 oz Au, 1,286,000 oz Ag, and 4,000 lbs Pb. In addition, 10,542 short tons of 2.7–71% WO ore and 615 short tons of fluorspar ore have been produced from the district.
