Inflatable friction rock bolts (IFRBs) are often considered temporary ground support due to their susceptibility to weakening from corrosion. The effective service life of an IFRB can be difficult to estimate due to the multitude of factors that affect the rate of corrosion. Some mine sites have experienced several-year-long service lives of IFRBs without issue, while others experience corrosion-related falls of ground only weeks after installation. The most common industry method of assessing bolt performance is by pull testing the fixture. However, due to the IFRB’s ability to mobilize its full tensile capacity with less than 2 feet of anchored length, corrosion along the bolt at depths greater than 2 feet from the collar cannot be identified using this approach. Alternatively, reinflation testing is a simple and non-destructive method of evaluating the condition of an entire bolt length for breaches in the bolt wall. This can be particularly useful when assessing the extent of corrosive conditions within a particular mining area where instabilities have already occurred and the condition of nearby bolts is unknown, or when re-entering historic mine workings which have not been monitored.

Molybdenum, the 42nd element in the periodic table, is now a very important metal in industry of the United States and the world. Chemically, it is a very complex element having valences of 0, +2, +3, +4, +5, and +6, and can exist as a mixture of these valences in many compounds. It was discovered and separated by Scheele in 1778. At the present time, molybdenite is the only important commercial source of molybdenum. Molybdenum occurs in some 12-14 different recognized minerals, but practically all of the production is molybde¬nite. As late as 1915, it was considered a rare metal. Germany made extensive use of it during the first world war, which resulted in the establishment of a molybdenum industry in the United States at Cli¬max, Colo., in 1917. It was not until the mid-1920s when its introduc¬tion to steelmaking developed for the US automobile industry that the metal gained important acceptance. The first notable example was the Willis-Saint Claire automobile introduced in 1921 by C. Harold Willis, formerly chief metallurgist for Ford Motor Co. Molybdenum has also been produced in the US from wulfenite (PbMoO4) from Arizona and Nevada, and a small amount of molyb¬denite was produced up to the early 1970s as a coproduct from two molybdenum-bismuth mines in Quebec, Canada. The first byproduct production of molybdenite from a copper con¬centrating operation was achieved at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, and was followed shortly by the Utah division of Kennecott Copper Co. in the mid-1930s. This section of the Handbook is divided into four main subdivi¬sions: Chapter 2, which deals with the concentration and recovery of molybdenite from primary molybdenum ores; Chapter 3, which deals with the recovery and separation of molybdenite as a byproduct from copper production; Chapter 4, which deals with the conversion practices employed for converting molybdenite to the oxide or metal form; and Chapter 5, which covers the uses of molybdenum in steel¬making, chemicals, pigments, lubrication, catalysts, etc. The Free World molybdenum production, for the past eight years from all sources, is shown in Table 1. 2. Primary Molybdenite Ores General In 1978 there were four primary molybdenite recovery plants in operation: Climax, Endako, Quests, and Henderson. For over half a century the Climax mine has been by far the largest and most important source of molybdenum in the world. During the early 1970s a few primary molybdenite mines in British Columbia were shut down due to adverse economical conditions. The largest of these was British Columbia Molybdenum, formerly owned by Kennecott Copper Corp. The Climax plant and operations are described in detail and the opera¬tions of the other plants are summarized following a general discussion of recovering molybdenite from primarily molybdenite ores. Recovery of molybdenite as a byproduct will be taken up in Chapter 3. Geology Molybdenite production from mines in which it is the sole or preponderantly important mineral is confined to ore bodies in granites or igneous-type rocks or pegmatite dikes. More than one state of mineralization is sometimes present as at Climax, York, Hardy, and Questa. In the case of Climax, important byproduct recovery of tung¬sten, tin, pyrite, and monazite is also attained. The molybdenite is commonly disseminated very finely in the siliceous granitic gangue but does occur in stringers and blebs in silicified mineral solution channels. Treatment of Primary Molybdenum Ores All primary molybdenum ores are low in molybdenite, the content ranging from less than 0.20% MoS2 to a high of about 0.40% MoS2. A high resistance to grinding is a common ore characteristic combined with a habit of very fine dissemination of molybdenite in the siliceous portion of the ore. Because of low MoS2 content, high hardness, and fine dissemination of molybdenite in primary ores, it has been necessary to develop a special mill treatment which yields an accepta¬ble recovery at a reasonably low milling cost. Essentially, the treatment consists of intensive rougher flotation at a relatively coarse grind with production of a low grade rougher froth containing a substantial percentage of the molybdenite in the form of low grade middling particles, followed with multistage regrinding to liberate the locked molybdenite and several stages of flotation cleaning to produce a finished grade concentrate. Rougher flotation on pulp ground to ap¬proximately 35 mesh is common practice, even if complete liberation of molybdenite from siliceous gangue may require regrinding to 200 mesh. The flotation of middling particles with a very low content of molybdenite in the rougher flotation step has been made possible by the application of a combination of reagents first developed at the Climax mill and used with some modification in the treatment of all primary molybdenum ores. The article deals with the use of a digital twin in the assessment and optimization of a conveyor system in the Chilean copper mine. This example shows that a digital twin is initially just a new (albeit powerful) tool with which the system behavior can be examined. The benefits for the customer arise through the system identification and automatic detection of critical deviations from the target state. This knowledge allows mine management to react and coordinate operational and/or maintenance counter measures to insure optimal performance of their conveyor system. The information derived from the BeltGenius digital twin also allows mine management to gain a clear perspective of the overall efficiency of their conveyors, which will be invaluable for future conveyor component selections.

My paper relates to bond's third theory of comminution and suggests work be used as a basis for designing crushing and screening plants, this will give more accuracy than existing methods, As stated in the abstract, this paper is only a synopsis of my official paper, many of the questions that might arise in this brief address will be answered by referring to the detail i n the main paper $ Because of the limited time available and the fact that many people here do not need to study the aspects of crushing and screening in depth, i will highlight-those sections of the paper which show how major capital, operating and energy cost savings can be achieved in the process, I will develop the theme in the following manner, Firstly, pointing out, why a new approach is needed to the fundamentals of crushing and screening, Secondly, by setting forth some theory to describe what we are trying to accomplish, Thirdly, by looking at important factors which need to be observed in designing plants and applying machines to comply with this theory, Lastly, i will put forth some ideas on how we might develop this theory to make the industry more efficient, At the outset, i have to say my approach to this process is entirely new, for those used to applying machines and designing plants on existing criteria, they will find this theory easier

This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. Good morning ladies and gentlemen of the AIME. I was doubly pleased when Toby Yu asked me to present to you my thoughts on the past, the present, and the future of bulk transportation by barge. My first pleasure comes from sharing with you the subject that has been my career for many years. I love this industry in the same way Mark Twain loved our rivers. Somehow, I can find in all of the activities that make up this crazy barge business the same sort of excitement that he found in "steam boating." The second reason for my enthusiasm is that Toby carefully pointed out that the presentation had to be kept to a maximum of 15 minutes. I can promise you that I will hold to his maximum time limit.

The control of quartz levels in the respirable dust requires an approach different from that used to control respirable coal dust. The unique physical properties of quartz have to be utilized when developing quartz dust control systems. Also, techniques that modify the surface properties of quartz dust so that conventional dust control measures are effective should be explored. For instance, the wetting characteristics of quartz can be modified so that the capture efficiency of the quartz dust can be improved. Foam sprays assist in modifying surface wetting characteristics. This paper summarizes the results of a study that was conducted in an operating mine to evaluate the effectiveness of a compressed air foam spray system installed under the boom of a continuous miner and directed so as to cover the pan and the gathering arm. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the effect of the foam underboom sprays on (1) the respirable dust concentration in the ambient air, (2) the quartz concentration in the respirable dust. The engineering design of the foam generation and delivery system is described in the paper, followed by a description of the mine and the dust sampling strategy. The data were analyzed to study the effect of foam on respirable dust and quartz concentrations at the miner cab, face return and the intake. The results of the data analyses and costs are presented in the paper.

The use of tritium in manufacturing and its subsequent loss to the local environment in Tucson, Arizona resulted in a great debate relative to the physiological effects of low level radiation. This paper reviews some of the facts of the release and attempts to quantify the degree of hazard encountered by the local community. Some of the difficulties in assessing the true degree of absorbed dose and the assumptions necessary for calculation purposes are presented.

In a previous article1 the methyl stretching vibrations for a series of xanthates and amines were reported, and the frequency of the methyl stretching vibrations in a homologous series of the alkyl compounds were shown to decrease exponentially with chain length and approach a limiting value corresponding to that of saturated hydrocarbon beyond six or seven carbons. These observations were explained quantitatively by the theory of Goto and Takenaka2 who proposed an equation relating the frequency shifts to the inductive effect of polar groups. As a result, the alkyl groups in the shorter chain heteropolar compounds were interpreted as becoming somewhat polar, and a good correlation was observed between the CH3-stretching frequencies and such surface chemistry parameters as contact angle, surface tension lowering, solubility, and critical micelle concentration" The substitution of fluorine atoms, the most electronegative of all atoms, for the hydrogen atoms in alkyl groups was expected to reverse the direction of the inductive effect within a heteropolar molecule, and its effect on the C-F stretching frequency shifts and on some surface chemical properties became of interest. In a recent study the C-F stretching frequencies of a series of normal perfluorocarboxylic acids and a few 1,1' -dihydroperfluoro alcohols were determined as a function of chain length and the results were compared with the corresponding hydrocarbon analogs. Furthermore, the nature of the induced polarity in the hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon groups was investigated through surface potential measurements at the interfaces of air-aqueous solutions of normal butyl alcohol and of l,l'-dihydroperfluorobutyl alcohol and through differential capacity and electrocapillary measurements at the interfaces of mercury-aqueous solutions containing the above two alcohols. Experimental Normal perfluorocarboxylic acids and 1,1' -dihydroperfluoro alcohols were provided through the courtesy of the 3M Company, St. Paul, Minnesota. Normal butyl alcohol was purchased from Distillation Product Industries, Rochester, New York. The importance of geology in ore reserve estimation has been stated by several authors. King et, a1 (1982) reported that the geological factor was the key deficiency where serious weaknesses in ore reserve estimation appeared, especially in grade. The foundation for a successful mining operation is an ore reserve estimate that neither overstates nor understates the true situation as to tonnage and grade. Overestimation of reserves can have devastating economic results. Overestimation of tonnage may lead to wasting money on an overbuilt plant or worse yet, if grade is seriously overestimated also, to undertaking an operation that is doomed to economic failure from the outset. Understated ore reserves can result in building a plant that is smaller than optimum which may result in higher unit costs. At worst, understated tonnage of ore reserves can result in a missed opportunity for a profitable operation. Failure of the ore reserve estimator to properly take into account all geologic and allied factors pertaining to the deposit can result in an ore reserve estimate that is overstated either as to tonnage or grade or both. This paper will focus on these factors and will not discuss rules about distances above or below a drift that should be given a classification of proven or probable, etc. Each deposit has its own particular characteristics which often require modification of general rules for defining limits of proven and probable ore blocks that work satisfactorily in another deposit. A number of references are included which discuss some of these problems. Definitions of ore reserve classifications and an illustration are given in the Appendix.

The cementation of gold on to copper and zinc in ammoniacal solutions has been studied using rotating disc electrodes. The cathodic reduction of aurous ammine was studied on a gold rotating disc electrode and the anodic dissolution of copper and zinc was studied in the absence of aurous ammine. The cementation rate was found to be a first order with respect to the concentration of aurous ammine and to be proportional to the square root of the disc rotating speed. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that the cementation reaction was controlled by mass transfer of aurous ammine to the reaction surface under the experimental conditions.

"A field study of the coal preparation plant fleet in the eastern United States was undertaken to determine if quantify of rare earth elements (REEs) present in the product streams are large enough to justify further concentration. Representative composite samples were taken from the clean product, coarse refuse, and fine refuse streams from 20 coal preparation plants. Each stream was then separated into various size and density classes and analyzed for ash and REE contents. The large database showed that coarse refuse contained the largest amount of REEs, although the ratio of heavy to light REEs was greater for the clean coal products. The concentration of REEs was also compared to that typically seen in the earth’s crust. This enrichment ratio ranged from approximately 1.5 to more than 4.0 as the ash content varied. The database also showed that a linear correlation existed between La and Ce for many REEs of interest, although there were several notable exceptions for some of the high-value REEs. INTRODUCTION Worldwide energy demand is expected to grow by as much as 37% by 2040 according to the International Energy Agency (2014). This growth, coupled with a decrease of the reliance on coal to generate energy, means that it is more important than ever for countries to secure the materials necessary to meet its energy projections. For the United States, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicts that total domestic electricity use will increase roughly 25%, from 3,836x109 kWh in 2013 to 4,797x109 kWh in 2040 (EIA, 2015). In the EIA’s reference case, coal’s contribution to electricity generation drops from 39% in 2013 to 34% in 2040. On the other hand, renewables share of electricity generation grows from 13% to 18% for the reference case. Compared to its current state, renewable energy electricity production is predicted to grow as little as 50% to as much as 121% over this time period, depending on the economic case being examined. This growth will largely be seen in the wind and solar sectors (EIA, 2015). The focus on viable renewable energy resources will be crucial to the future of fueling American growth. Many of the renewable energy technologies, such as wind turbines and photovoltaic films, rely on materials and supply chains outside of the United States. The lack of a reliable and low-cost domestic supply could pose a threat to the growth of the renewable energy markets in the United States. This potential vulnerability recently led the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to create a Critical Materials Strategy Report. In this report, 15 elements were identified as critical for the continued growth of the renewable energy market. Eight of these elements were rare earth elements (REEs). Five REEs (dysprosium, neodymium, terbium, yttrium and europium) were identified as highly critical and vulnerable to shortages (Bauer et al., 2012)."

Banded siliceous manganese-iron bearing sediments recognized as distinctive facies of Algoma type iron-formation constitute low grade resources of manganese in many countries. Manganiferous facies associated with oxide and carbonate facies of iron-formation have iron to manganese ratios ranging from 0.2 to 2 and commonly about one. Manganiferous facies up to 30 meters thick occurring separately or with other iron-formation facies are associated with cherts, carbonates, shales, turbidites, tuffs and lavas. Primary cherty manganiferous facies and their gondite metamorphic equivalents represent significant manganese resources and are protores for higher grade deposits derived by secondary enrichment processes.

Minerals beneficiation commonly requires initial crushing and grinding so that the mineral phase we seek to concentrate is adequately liberated to obtain a product of specified grade at optimum recovery. To some degree this also is true for coal preparation. In the comminution process we liberate not only the product but also the tailings phase. The true objective is, therefor, to eliminate from the comminution circuit whatever particulate matter has reached specified liberation, regardless of whether the particle is product or tailings material. Overgrinding either of the two phases ties up mill capacity and usually also burdens the downstream processing steps by increasing costs or decreasing recovery, or both. In view of this situation, one would expect concentration steps to be commonly incorporated into the cominution circuit. The reasons this is not done may vary, but probably include the desire to utilize large scale unit operations, e.g., large mills, in conjunction with very simple processes. Hydrocyclones have satisfied this desire but may not always be employed for the right reasons. Hydrocyclones are indeed simple. They also are rugged and forgiving. Unfortunately, these virtues are frequently misused. The direct results are inefficient classification and overgrinding. The indirect results are added costs through recovery losses, unnecessary recirculation, and so on,

As mines progress to ever increasing depth, new challenges are encountered with serious concerns for rock excavations in highly stressed conditions. New procedures have been undertaken or are under way to remove workers from the workface, mitigating risk and exposure to hazardous conditions. Rockbolting crews are at particular risk as they are the first line of defense in the installation of the ground support systems. One such initiative for removal of workers from danger has been with remote bolting. Equipment manufacturers have had the ability to remotely inject resin pneumatically into boreholes for several years, but it has not been recognized as a very effective method due to a variety of complications. This makes the installation of dynamic support system components such as the D-Bolt® increasingly difficult. More recently, hollow-core bolts have become popular providing far more effective installation when installed with pumpable, two component urea-silicate injection resins. Normet has developed high energy dissipation self-drilling dynamic bolts (SDDB®) to meet these challenges. Following several inquiries as to the effectiveness of pumpable resins for use with dynamic support components, Normet Canada performed comprehensive testing of the bolt and resin system at CanmetMINING in Ottawa to dispel or substantiate any preconceived beliefs. Several dynamic and static tests in direct and indirect loading were carried out. Results include tests in shear and early strength UCS of the resin to measure the performance of the SDDB compared with the established D Bolt as an effective dynamic ground support component. Underground field observations, installation methodology and in-situ testing are investigated.

Two mineral processing facilities in North America required near terminal density slurries to perform de-bottle necking in their circuits. The installation at Barrick Goldstrike to ensure efficient oxidation conditions and throughputs in the refractory ore treating autoclaves. The Kidd Metallurgical Division unit to provide a steeper tailings slope to extend the life of the existing tailings dam. To achieve these goals, both operations selected a Supaflo "High Compression" Thickener following on site pilot plant evaluation. Commissioning and the first year of operation is reviewed. Operating data is compared with the pilot plant data. In particular, unusual doughnut formation at Goldstrike and the effect of temperature on the terminal density at Kidd Metallurgical Division are discussed.

This paper, in its first part, compares the profile and economic weight in the extraction of industrial minerals and aggregates to the so called conventional mining activities (metals, coal, gas and oil extraction) in Brazil. In its second part, a descriptive analysis of the present situation of the education in Brazil is made, emphasizing the graduation and post-graduation formation especially in engineering. The curricular structure of the schools that prepare the mining workforce is discussed and the presence of specific subjects in industrial minerals is evaluated. Finally, considerations are made on the actions being taken in the main universities and companies, aiming to improve the formation of the specialized workforce. The Brazilian mining production, comparing 2010 to 2011 showed an expansion of more than 3% (IBGE, 2012). Not bad, but nothing to do with the 13% growth between 2010 and 2009 (influenced by a recovery effect from the 2008 commodities? nightmare). The commodities that had a rising behavior were titanium, gypsum, nickel, graphite, bauxite, phosphate, chrome and chrysotile. All of them were eclipsed by the impressive growth of iron ore production. Some decreases could be noticed, eg. in zinc, kaolin, magnesite and salt production (DNPM, 2012). In fact, the mining activities followed the positive growth of the country these last 5 years. The commercial balance (exports against imports) was not spectacular (positive in US$ 30 billion in 2010). It is important to notice that the mineral commodities balance was US$ 35 billion, representing 27.4% of the total exports and 15.6% of the total imports of Brazil (DNPM, 2012). In this positive environment, the workforce in Brazil showed progress in number of formal jobs and average revenues.

Hanna Mining Company's Groveland Mine is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The low grade iron ore deposit consists of a mixture of magnetite and hematite with chert, jasper, quartz and various iron silicates (1). The ore is beneficiated by magnetic separation and anionic flotation of the iron minerals with chemical depression of the silica. The magnetic concentrate makes up about 75% of the concentrate. The concentrate is pelletized at the rate of 2.0 million LTPY of pellet production. The concentrator facilities were started up in 1959 and the concentrate was marketed as sinter feed until 1963 when the concentrator was expanded and the pelletizing plant was added. The pellet plant now consists of regrinding, elutriation, filtering, balling and induration. The pellet machine is a straight grate which employs updraft drying and cooling and downdraft drying, preheat and firing. It is necessary to regrind the concentrate before pelletizing. The con-centrate is 60% passing 325 mesh, with a surface area of ±lOOO cm2/Gm, and must be ground to about 83% passing 325 mesh, 1600 cm2/Gm blaine surface area, for pelletizing. The energy for regrind has been reduced from 12.5 KW per LT to 8.80 KW ate of 2.0 million per LT. This was the result of changes made in the concentrator where originally a coarse spiral concentrate, instead of the magnetic concentrate which is screened on fine screens to reduce the coarse fraction and prevent overgrinding before flotation, was produced. Also in 1968 an additional concentrating line was added to the concentrator which employs more grinding power than the other three lines. The demand for a high iron grade and lower silica pellet resulted in the investigation of different schemes of upgrading the reground concentrate which had more iron values liberated during grinding for surface area. The reagentized material presented many problems, mainly in selectivity trying to flot the iron and with high reagent consumption having to dereagentize the concentrate for amine silica flotation, in the various flotation systems tried. TVA's involvement in air quality programs is perhaps a bit unique. The Tennessee Valley Authority was established in 1933 as a regional resource development agency and therefore must view clean air and clean water as essential resources for the overall development of the Tennessee Valley region. TVA operates certain resource development and production facilities, including power-generating facilities, which are potential air pollution sources. The remarks in this paper will be restricted to air pollution control technology at power-generating stations. Perspectives of Air Pollution Control The art of pollution control must be viewed from several perspectives: 1. It must be viewed in a time perspective--what is available now for air pollution control, what might be available in the near future, what are the likely technologies for the more distant future, and what the future trends in availability of resources might be. 2. Each air pollution abatement scheme must be viewed in the perspective of its total environmental consequences--not just its ability to clean up the air. The generation of electricity from coal produces waste gases, waste particulates, and waste heat. These wastes must be disposed of either in water, in air, or on land. If the polluting wastes are removed from the gas streams going into the air, then they must be disposed of either on land or in water or, hopefully, converted into a product which has some beneficial use. As an example, removal of S02 from stack gases could be more readily accomplished if one could dump waste sulfur products in water. He would solve an air pollution problem by creating a water pollution problem. 3. Techniques for air pollution control must be viewed in the perspective of regional, national, and world resources with their national security and economic implications. The power industry might reduce air pollution by switching generating plants to burning desulfurized fuel oil or natural gas.

As with the slogans of Madison Avenue, catch words or phrases frequently become topical. Much is heard these days of the confrontation between governments of developing countries and international mining capital. In actual fact, sadly there are too few cases of anything as positive as confrontation because such an action at least signifies a dialogue which may begin badly but end up fruitfully.
