Introduction In view of the continuing depletion of natural resources, requirements for energy conservation, plant optimization and hazardous waste management, and environmental consciousness, recycling and secondary recovery of materials are being developed with increasing interest Many secondary recovery processes are being developed that apply mineral processing technology. Gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation have all emerged as explicit methods for recovering residual values from various process streams and hazardous constituents from waste streams. Recently, a technique for concentrating metallics has been successfully reintroduced. The concept of the alternating magnetic field eddy-current separator was developed over a century ago using rudimentary electromagnets (Patent 400317 issued to Thomas Edison on March 26, 1889). Widespread acceptance was, however, hindered by high costs, marginal results and poor economic incentives for secondary recovery. With the recent increased interest in secondary recovery and the development of high-energy rare earth permanent magnets, the eddy-current separator has now gained prominent acceptance. The separation forces imparted by an eddy current separator are the function of the magnetic field intensity and the alternating frequency of the magnetic field. The evolution of permanent magnets has provided a cost effective alternative for the generation of high-intensity magnetic fields. High-energy rare earth permanent magnets have substantially reduced the capital and operating costs over the electromagnetic circuits employed in antecedent eddy-current separators. Specifically, in recent years, the strength of permanent magnets has increased several fold with neodymium-boron-iron rare earth magnets now providing an energy product of 35 million gauss-oersted. Figure 1 shows the evolution in the strength of permanent magnets. The development of these rare earth magnets has led to the design of circuits possessing a magnetic force an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional permanent magnetic circuits. The eddy-current separator has been successfully applied in several metal sorting and recovery operations. Most common is the sorting of metal from shredded automobile scrap and municipal waste. With the advent of high-frequency, high-intensity magnetic fields, the separator has advanced to the point where it has direct application in the beneficiation of fine sized metals. Relatively fine sized (-1/4 in.) metal bearing slags and spent foundry casting sands as well as precious metal hearing electronic scrap demonstrate excellent metallurgical response to the eddy-current separator, and applications have progressed to finer materials and more selective separations. Theory Electrical currents are induced in all conductors when exposed to an alternating magnetic field. The induced current generates a magnetic field in the conductor that opposes that of the alternating magnetic field. Figure 2, is a schematic illustration of generated eddy currents. In this particular example, the alternating magnetic field is produced by a series of permanent magnets mounted on the circumference of a rotor. The permanent magnets have alternating polarity. As the rotor revolves, an alternating magnetic field is produced, and the rate of revolution determines the frequency of the alternating magnetic field. When a conductor, such as a metallic disc in the illustration, is placed in the alternating magnetic field, a closed loop current flow occurs. The current loop in the conductor produces a magnetic field that is a mirror image of the alternating magnetic field. At any point in time, the induced magnetic field in the conductor directly opposes the alternating magnetic field. This opposition of magnetic fields produces an instantaneous repulsion in the conductor. The conductor is consequently repelled from the rotor. The alternating magnetic field has no effect on nonmetallic materials as they pass through the magnetic field and discharge the rotor in a natural trajectory. [ ]

Resumen ¦ Un sistema de comunicaciones “a través del suelo” (TTE) comercial y disponible fue evaluado en una mina de carbón subterránea en la zona Este del Estado de Kentucky. Este estudio de campo fue realizado como parte de una evaluación multisitio mayor de sistemas TTE disponibles. La mina detallada en este estudio se encontraba paralizada al momento de la evaluación, lo que proporcionó la representación más cercana a la realidad del medio ambiente en una mina luego de una operación de cierre. Para este estudio se probaron las comunicaciones superficie a subterráneo y subterráneo a superficie. El despliegue estándar del sistema TTE usando los procedimientos recomendados por el fabricante logró obtener comunicaciones claras y nítidas entre el socavón y la superficie. Otras disposiciones de las unidades arrojaron resultados mixtos. Existen planes para examinar más los fenómenos observados en esta mina.

Currently, virtually all new electric power generation systems under construction are designed with natural gas as the primary fuel. Factors driving these construction decisions involve sustained low prices for natural gas, environ-mental (and consequent regulatory) risks associated with the use of coal for power generation, and relatively high costs of construction for conventional coal-fired power plants. Despite the unarguable abundance of coal in the US. and worldwide, a fundamental question arises: What will be the role of coal in electric power generation in the 21st century? Congress, recognizing the vital and strategic importance of preserving the coal option for electric power generation, authorized the Clean Coal Technology Program. This pro-gram, with original funding in excess of $2,500 million, is intended to promote the demonstration and commercialization of a new generation of clean, efficient coal-based energy technologies through collaboration and partnering with private industry. The two technologies being demonstrated under this program which are the key to the continued use of this nation's huge coal reserves are coal gasification and the pressurized fluid bed. Either or both of these technologies, coupled with a combined cycle will pro-vide the continuing future coal option, while responding to increasingly more restrictive environmental standards. Recent Congressional budget-cutting efforts, however, could threaten the effectiveness of that model program, and ultimately other subsequent government-industry collaboration.

Minewater from many western U.S. uranium mines often contains radioisotopes in concentrations higher than permissible for discharge to unrestricted areas. .Radium 226 has the lowest permissible concentrations of all radioisotopes and usually greatly exceeds this limit in untreated effluents. This radionuclide is derived from the natural radioactive decay of uranium: [ ] The treating of minewater effluents has been studied previously (1) and the classical removal method for radium has been adsorption on barytes or freshly precipitated barium sulfate. This paper describes the removal of radium from minewater by utilizing a selective complexer based on a crosslinked organic polymer matrix.

Numerical simulations have been used to investigate roof fall in the past decades. Comparing to the continuum based methods, the discrete element method has been well recognized for its excellent performance in simulating large strain problems and fracturing processes in the rock mass. However, the discrete element method has its limitations. When simulating a large-scale problem, a large number of particles are required, which consumes significant computational resources. In the present study, a 3D numerical model coupled with the finite-difference method (FDM) and the discreteelement method (DEM) was created to simulate the laminated roof failure in an eastern coal mine in the US. In the FDM-DEM coupled model, the laminated roof of the entry is represented by an assembly of bonded particles using PFC3D. The laminated roof is simulated by adding parallel discontinuities. The discontinuities are given certain stiffness and strength in the model. The ribs, floor, and far-field surrounding rock are represented by continuum zones using FLAC3D. The strength of the discontinuities is varied sequentially and the fracturing of the laminated roof was analyzed with respect to entry advance. The results showed that the laminated roof fractures along the discontinuities while an intact roof fractures in a dome shape. Increasing the strength of discontinuity could enlarge the tensile zone inside the laminated roof and hence change the crack distribution. In addition, the crack quantity in the laminated roof behind the advancing face decreases with the increment of discontinuity strength while this trend is not occurring ahead of the advancing face. The simulation demonstrated that coupled method using PFC3D/FLAC3D can reproduce the laminated roof failure in underground coal mines.

Ultrafine copper, gold and silver minerals flotation has become increasingly important because of the rising demand for processing finely disseminated ores. This paper investigates the improved flotation of ultrafine ores from a Troilus Gold project. Troilus is primarily an Au-Cu deposit but contains minor amounts of Ag, Zn and Pb, as well as traces of Bi, Te, and Mo. As a result of ultrafine Cu-Au-Ag dissemination and associated grinding requirements, Eriez’ column/StackCell and Denver benchtop cells were utilized to optimize their respective flotation responses. Enhanced flotation results were achieved using column and StackCell technologies. KAX 51 and SPRI 206 collectors, Na2SO3, and ZnSO4 depressants were the primary reagents employed. In column/StackCell flotation of three main mineral deposit ore composites, the rougher-scavenger-cleaner circuit Cu, Au and Ag flotation recoveries were 90.4~95.8% at a copper grade of 13.6-17.4%, 87.5-95.1% at a gold grade of 101-145.9 g/t, and 88.6-91.8% at a silver grade of 62.6-251.4 g/t, respectively. The benefits of Eriez Column/StackCell flotation technologies include high flotation selectivity and increased recovery due to unique hydrodynamic designs. Specifically, the StackCell design facilitates high turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates to improve fine particle recovery and incorporates countercurrent wash water to significantly reduce hydraulic entrainment of the finest size gangue minerals to the froth product.

Mining companies globally are going through a series of challenges such as declining ore grades with complex metallurgy, increasing depth of ore bodies, high capital and operating costs, lower productivity, shortage of technical resources, significant pressure from stake-holders to deliver, along with growing environmental and corporate social responsibility issues. Improvement in profitability would need significant improvements in operational performance.Consequently, over the last few years, there has been a major focus among some mining companies to imbibe operational excellence. This has been only possible because of the replacement of a silos-based approach by an integrated view of the organization. Such an integrated view is now possible via the evolving digital technologies. Even so, such a transformation calls for a change in culture, which, for most organizations is not trivial. Attempts in the past to integrate functions, such as through mine-to-mill initiatives in the mining industry, have demonstrated significant benefits to many operations (McKee, 2013). Still, sustaining these benefits has clearly been a challenge due to manpower turnover and lack of proper systems and structures that integrate information between business functions within an operation and between operations and the corporate level.Opportunities. The air lift method of pumping water is discussed. A review of several large diameter hole drilling projects that used reverse circulation air lift techniques is presented. Proposals are made for reverse circulation flow rates for slow rates of bit penetration (5 fph) as well as reverse circulation flow rates for faster rates of bit penetration (10 fph). The Ingersoll- Rand air lift equations are modified for rotary drilling operations. By establishing minimum reverse circulation flow rates and utilizing the modified air lift equations, the establishment of minimum circulation equipment sizes and a more definitive requirement for improved bit body design should result.

Injuries and fatalities resulting from roof falls are still a major concern in U.S. coal mines, and many researchers are focused on developing meaningful approaches to minimize this hazard. In the United States, coal mine roofs can vary widely in composition, geometry, and inherent heterogeneity, leading to a wide array of different roof fall failure types. Researchers frequently employ numerical modeling tools to reproduce this physical phenomenon and provide key guides to engineers regarding roof conditions and control as long as the input data and constitutive relations are appropriately selected. Simulating such complexity requires expertise and constitutive models that adequately simulate roof behaviors. However, the currently available constitutive models have shortcomings in capturing some of the roof fall failure types common in underground coal mines, such as guttering. A new constitutive model is developed to address the shortcomings of constitutive models commonly used for coal roof stability analysis. The constitutive model developed in this study combines the anisotropic-elasticity and nonlinear strain-softening responses. In addition, the developed constitutive model can simulate up to three different joint sets implicitly, allowing for use in both continuum and discontinuum settings, and can be used in both Lagrangian finite-volume and distinct element method codes of Itasca. First, the mathematical expressions of the model are provided. Afterward, the validation phase of the developed model that covers comparisons with analytical solutions and those of existing models (e.g., anisotropic elasticity, ubiquitous-joint, and bilinear strain-hardening/softening ubiquitous-joint plasticity) is presented. Finally, a hypothetical coal mine roadway facing high horizontal stress is simulated. The presented model successfully shows three distinct stages of a cutter roof in a shale roof: (1) initiation of shear cracks at the rib– roof intersection, (2) extension of cracks deeper into the roof (i.e., above the roof bolt length horizon), and (3) cantilevered roof. It is demonstrated that the presented constitutive model has the potential to help future researchers in simulating various roof responses.

It is known that the water chemistry of the process water during ore refinement can affect product quality, such as iron pellet strength. The main objective of this study was to quantify the amounts of major elements, such as Ca, Mg, Na, S and Cl carried by process water and by magnetite grain surfaces to the end product, iron ore pellets made from magnetite ore from the Kiirunavaara Mine in northern Sweden. In addition, the amount of colloids (0.22µm ? 1kD) in the process water was examined by ultrafiltration. The amounts of various elements sorbed to the magnetite surfaces were estimated by leaching with Milli-Q water, MgCl2, NH4-acetate and Na-acetate. Total dissolved solids were between 1,446 and 1,775 mg/l, dominated by Ca, S, Na and Cl (89%). The colloidal fraction was less than 3% for major ions. For Ca and Mg, sorption to magnetite surfaces was a much more important transport mechanism for the pelletizing process than evaporated process water, but for Na, Cl and S process water was an important carrier.

There are more than 15,000 abandoned mine features in New Mexico. A considerable number of these mines have not been cataloged or assessed for prioritized reclamation efforts. These mine wastes can be examined as a resource of critical minerals. Many of legacy mine waste deposits have undiscovered commodities and critical minerals, due to low recovery processes during past production. In this project, Black Hawk mine wastes in Grant County, New Mexico are examined by thorough mineralogical and geochemical characterization. This project seeks to characterize and estimate the critical minerals in mine wastes of Black Hawk mine, and determine the acid generating potential of mine waste. Identifying and producing critical minerals in New Mexico may directly benefit the U.S economy and national security.

A current environmental concern is the cleanup and restoration of soil contaminated with low-level radionuclides at DOE sites including the Nevada Test Site. At the present, there is no applicable process to economically and effectively deal with the remediation of contaminated soils. This situation requires development of a selective flotation process to separate the radionuclides from contaminated soil efficiently and economically. In this study, a minus 200 mesh size fraction of pure cerium dioxide was used as a surrogate for plutonium oxide which is the major contaminant at the Nevada Test Site. A Hallimond flotation cell was utilized to examine the flotation behavior of cerium dioxide with oleic acid under various conditions of pH and collector concentration Mechanical cell tests were conducted to float the surrogate from a mixture with uncontaminated Nevada Test Site soil in the absence and presence of calcium carbonate as a carrier. Two different sizes of the carrier (minus 150 mesh and 65-150 mesh) were tested. It was found through the Hallimond cell flotation tests that the cerium dioxide could be floated well at pH's 4 and 9 with 10-3 molar oleic acid. It was also found that the addition of the carrier drastically enhanced the flotation recovery of cerium dioxide. The flotation recovery of the surrogate increased from 34 % to 65 % by adding only 0.5 % calcium carbonate (minus 150 mesh) in the feed and also increased to 95 % by adding 10 % of this carrier to the feed. The finer size fraction of calcium carbonate (minus 150 mesh) was more effective in recovering cerium dioxide than the coarser size fraction (65-150 mesh) The flotation method utilizing a carrier of calcium carbonate seems to provide a high potential to be used for the remediation of soil contaminated with radionuclides at various Department of Energy's nuclear weapon sites.

"The Coeur d’Alene mining district in northern Idaho was first discovered more than 130 years ago and has been the most prolific silver producer in the United States. The Lucky Friday Mine of Hecla Mining Co. (Fig. 1) is the oldest (76 years) and deepest mine in the district, producing approximately 725 t/day (800 stpd) from narrow, vertical lead-zinc-silver veins. Cut-and-fill stoping is currently employed at depths to about 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the three deepest mines in the western hemisphere. The #4 Shaft, a winze collared at approximately 1.8 km (5,900 ft) below surface and extending to a depth of nearly 2.9 km (9,600 ft), was recently completed to exploit the high-grade 30 Vein, whose resource has been identified to at least 3 km (9,700 ft) in depth.As with other deep mines worldwide, a number of challenging engineering issues occur, including: high in situ rock stress, squeezing ground, seismicity, high in situ rock temperature that requires refrigeration, diesel equipment that generates diesel particulate matter (DPM) requiring high ventilation airflow rates and long travel times for worker transport to mining areas.This article describes the methods that Hecla Mining Co. has employed during the past 50 years to combat these issues, with emphasis on the current efforts to implement continuous, mechanical mining with automated or teleremote operation and to introduce electric and battery-powered equipment to minimize refrigeration and ventilation requirements for the removal of DPMs.Geology and in situ stressThe host rock mass is an extremely thick sedimentary sequence (the Belt Series) that has been tilted vertically by mountain building. The rock mass in the current section of the mine consists of weak, heavily foliated argillites and stronger, bedded silty-argillites termed siltite. The vertical veins (80° to 85° dip) are parallel to the foliation with an approximate width of around 3 m (10 ft). There are two regional, vertical faults that parallel the vein; one forming the hangingwall of the orebody and one approximately 90 m (300 ft) in the footwall. Additionally, there are several thin, rough northdipping faults that occur in the footwall of the vein which terminate on the major vertical faults.Both the argillite and vein package rock have moderate strength, with uniaxial compressive strength averaging about 100 MPa (14,700 psi with a range from about 70 to 125 MPa), and are moderately abrasive, with CERCHAR abrasivity index of 2 to 3. The major in situ stress is horizontal and oriented in a northwest direction with magnitude about 1.5 times the vertical stress. Consequently, the Lucky Friday stress magnitude at depth is analogous to significantly deeper South African gold operations."

A methodology is presented for finding feasible or locally optimal designs in the class of homogeneous, countercurrent, processing networks performing two-component non-sharp separations. The advantage of the methodology developed here is that given a set of independent performance criteria (specifications such as network separation factor, beneficiation ratio or recovery), a feasible or locally optimal countercurrent network design meeting those criteria can be found in one step. In the methodology, graph-theory was used to explicitly obtain the exact network responses of specific countercurrent networks. These responses were used to formulate the linear recursion equations whose solution gives the expressions for the countercurrent network responses which are a function of the stage transfer functions for two-component, non-sharp separations. These expressions are also functions of the network variables n and c. These expressions, together with the set of independent design criteria, were solved simultaneously for n and c using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained, non-linear equations. The network variables n and c embody the coded network design information which is used to find the feasible network design which satisfies the set of independent performance criteria.

Management is a major part of sustainability research. Many different aspects of sustainability have already received significant research attention, but the management processes in mining from the perspective of their impact on society are less understood and integrated as a holistic frame. It is evident that mining technology has received major blame in past ecological disasters and major mining-induced environmental hazards, but the management-mining process has escaped unscathed. This should not have happened. Instead, the management processes should share equal blame with obsolete technology for the failure to identify and monitor potential environmental hazards before their inception of mining. We will present an emergent style of management for the future of mining. It challenges the actual ?mind-set? of mining management. It describes balance and equilibrium: physical, chemical, and biological in nature as an understanding of nature?s language, which is Geomimic along side ?the bottom line?. The goal is to minimize loss instead of maximize profits (waste design) at the design stage of mining and to develop clean technologies (nature's values) to achieve non-social environmental impacts that provide a prosperous legacy to future generations.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will induct the 2013 National Mining Hall of Fame class on Sept. 14, 2013. The ceremony will take place at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, CO. Representing the domestic and worldwide metal production, education, and health and safety sectors of the industry, this year?s five inductees cover a diverse cross-section of the mining industry. The inductees are: Charles F. Barber, Donald W. Gentry, Patrick H. O?Neill, Milton H. Ward and David A. Zegeer. They will join 218 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 26th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony. They were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors, both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Barber was a top executive at leading U.S. metals producer Asarco from 1956 to 1982. During his tenure, Asarco responded successfully to the demanding requirements of new environmental legislation in the United States and to changing concepts of foreign investment in mining, especially in Latin America. Gentry?s career took him from being a working mining engineer, to renowned mining educator, to president and chief executive officer of a mining company. As an educator, he had a positive impact upon hundreds, if not thousands, of new mining engineers and many others who took his short courses in mine economics. During his years in South America, O?Neill did everything from supervising operations of 15-bucket ladder gold dredges to becoming president of International Mining Corp. As an executive, he emphasized provision of education and training to local people working at mine sites for which he had responsibility. Ward?s experience covered the world and spectrum of metals, minerals and ores, ranging from A to Z (antimony to zinc and Australia to Zambia). He was president, chairman and chief executive officer of Cyprus Amax Minerals from 1992 to 1999, and he was president and chief operating officer of Freeport-McMoRan from 1983 to 1992, during which time he was instrumental in developing Freeport?s world-class Indonesian operations. Zegeer dedicated his mining career to protecting the health and safety of miners as a corporate executive, head of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and community leader. His tenure at MSHA coincided with a period of remarkable progress in U.S. mining safety .NMHF&M Board of Directors Chairman Paul C. Jones said: ?The five outstanding gentlemen being honored this year as inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame are classic examples of the leadership and work ethic that has made America?s mining industry the world leader in technically sound, environmentally and socially correct, and economical mineral production that sets the standards for mining worldwide. We are very proud to add these five legendary gentlemen, who have demonstrated their sound technical and management skills to advance society on a worldwide basis, to our current list of 218 inductees being honored by the National Mining Hall of Fame.? 2013 Prazen Award winner ? Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the cost approach category for real property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties. The author reasons that standards and regulations pertaining to real property valuation should be modified, and underlying principles should be expanded, so as not to inhibit appropriate application of these cost approach methods.

An operating problem encountered at the Moa Bay operation in Cuba, where nickeliferous laterite ore is processed by sulfuric acid pressure leaching, is the formation of alunite and hematite deposits on the autoclave walls. The AMPX Extractive Research & Development, Inc., metallurgical laboratory (Golden, Colorado) has made substantial improvements in the Moa Bay process in the areas of metal recovery, energy consumption, and feed versatility. One of the advantages of AMAX's process is its ability to treat substantial portions of nickel- and magnesium-rich serpentine while maintaining acid utilization efficiency. The process minimizes scale formation by combining staged acid addition with vigorous agitation and 270°C operation, but does not eliminate scaling. This paper describes how advantage can be taken of MgSO4?XH20 precipitation both to inhibit alunite scaling and to disperse hematite scale within the MgSO4?XH20 matrix. Cooling the autoclave from its 270°C operating temperature down to 180°C takes advantage of the reverse solubility of magnesium sulfate. The magnesium dissolves, liberating entrained hematite, thus providing a means for control of autoclave scale with minimum process disruption.

Search and rescue operations in mining heavily rely on humans. In the context of emergency situations within underground tunnels, the potential to utilize sensory technology for navigation assistance holds the promise of saving human lives. Our research introduces a device configuration designed to enhance the performance of search and rescue teams. This setup integrates LIDAR and thermal cameras with the Microsoft Hololens, facilitated by the NUC computer and ROS Bridge. Performance assessment involves quantifying the extent to which a user is willing to venture into a light-deprived section of the mine prior to necessitating supplementary illumination. The preliminary outcomes highlight the significant potential of augmented reality assistance in offering indispensable aid to first responders, thereby greatly augmenting the efficiency of search and rescue missions conducted during critical circumstances.
