Because of a, work stoppage at the Carlsbad plant, IMC faced the challenge of operating a 24-hour-a-day mine and plant with inexperienced maintenance and production crews. This is an underground mining operation, using the room-and-pillar mining- method. The mine was entirely, mechanized with conventional equipment, was hoisting an average of 13,539 tons off ore per 24 hours, and employed a, mine maintenance group of 100 men. The 100-man, mine maintenance group was equally divided between mechanics and electricians. In re-forming this maintenance group, two main objectives were to be achieved (1) a general upgrading off the intelligence level; and (2) the elimination of craft lines for greater flexibility.

An upgrade to Vale?s existing Clarabelle dual-pinion, semiautogenous (SAG) mill was completed by the power and automation technology company, ABB. The mill is used to reduce the size of the ore at the company?s nickel and copper mines in the Sudbury area. The project was completed on time and on budget with an excellent safety record. Located in Ontario about 400 km (250 miles) north of Toronto, Vale?s Sudbury operations are primarily underground nickel sulfide mines, with integrated mining, milling, smelting and refining operations. One of the characteristics of Clarabelle Mill is to accept nickel-copper ore from various sources and companies and to produce a nickel-copper concentrate and copper concentrate for further processing. The size of the ore is further reduced in SAG mills, rod mills and ball mills, where all milling is done wet.

Stall or aerodynamic stall of axial flow fans has long been recognized as an important operational problem in mine ventilation. To develop a technique for characterizing fan stall in multiple fan ventilation networks, a research project was initiated through the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Mine Systems Design and Ground Control. Considering that fan stall is related to multiple operating points, this paper discusses a numerical model for multiple fan ventilation networks, and numerical methods for solving multiple networks solutions. It is hoped that the results of this project will lead to an innovative method of ventilation network analysis and simulation, thus preventing stall.

The literature defines rockbursts in slightly different ways based on their generation mechanisms, field phenomena, and degree of damage, but in a way that is almost consistent. Generally, a rockburst refers to seismic events that mainly happen in underground excavations, for purposes such as underground mining, road and railway tunnels, nuclear power, etc., and that are followed by the collapse and outburst of rocks. Long-term rockburst prediction can be abstracted as a classification problem mathematically, in which we can introduce deep learning to solve it. Further, using deep learning in rockburst prediction can overcome drawbacks such as subjectivity and inconsistency brought from previous traditional approaches. A rockburst data-set, was employed to evaluate the current method for predicting rockburst grade, and the good results of overall success rate were obtained. The results indicated that the proposed algorithms can speed up parameter optimization search, the proposed method is robust model and might hold a high potential to become a useful tool in rockburst prediction research.

The presence of appreciable quantity of clay mineral in Indian hematite ore needs an attrition technique using screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit to remove the ultrafine clays and avoid downstream operational problems. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that iron ore samples obtained from the Barbil region of Odisha contain a high amount of silica and alumina in the form of clay minerals (e.g., kaolinite) contributed as a loss on ignition (LOI) in the iron-making process. Iron ore fines of below 10 mm size were subjected to a laboratory-scale screw scrubber, and the effectiveness of scrubbing as well as the pelletization of the scrubbed product was investigated. The screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit helps to remove the clay minerals, causes an increase in iron values from 63.65% Fe(T) to 66.18%Fe(T), with improved physical (CCS of 325 kg/pellet) and metallurgical (RDI of 2.24%) pellet properties.

The relaxation test on sandstone specimens showed typical behavior in pre-failure region and stepwise behavior in the postfailure region. Overall, more significant stress relaxation occurred within the failed specimens than the intact ones. Numerical simulations were conducted with pre-defined failure plane and with Voronoi tessellation to visualize the relaxation behavior. The model with pre-defined failure plane showed the key role of failure plane and asperity in simulating the step-wise post-failure relaxation behavior. The inhomogeneous stress distribution within failed specimen and the viscous deformation of intact rocks induced high stress concentration at the asperities. The observed step-wise relaxation initiated from the failure of asperity. Furthermore, the simulations with Voronoi tessellation showed time-dependent fracture development during relaxation in post-failure region. The presence of fractures completely changed the stress distribution. Stress concentration occurred at the front area of fractures and at the interacting areas between fractures. During relaxation, fractures still developed with time and the sudden significant increase in the “damage” coincided with the acceleration of stress relaxation leading to step-wise relaxation. Finally, the results showed the possibility of using residual strength as the long-term strength of failed rock.

This study tests the ability of a new air nozzle system, located under the drill deck shroud, to improve the dust capture of the drill deck shroud. The system consists of three air nozzles supplied with regulated pressurized air and located midway down the shroud in the off-inlet corners of the shroud. Laboratory testing produced operating curves for the system that showed an optimum operating point of 207 kPa (30 psi) and generated respirable dust reductions of 48% to 52% from the drill deck shroud.

The oxidative degradation kinetics of chalcopyrite have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The obtained data are necessary for the kinetic description of the flash fusion process, which can contribute to the optimization of the smelting process in copper extractive metallurgy. Activation energy (Ea) evolutions of the involved processes have been determined by several isoconversional methods; in this sense, the chalcopyrite oxidation processes could be adequately described, among studied models (E1641–16, Ozawa–Flynn–Wall, Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose and Friedman), by the Kissinger–Akahira– Sunose kinetic model. Using this method, Ea and A values are found to be very dependent on the conversion. Under lower conversion levels, higher Ea and A values have been calculated with respect to that found for medium and higher conversion levels.

The importance of optimizing equipment replacement decisions becomes more critical each year due to the rising costs of buying new equipment versus maintaining old equipment. Replacing equipment when it is physically worn out, or replacing it too soon or too late relative to its Economic Life (when it is economically worn out), is very costly. After extensive literature review and research, Kennecott has developed its Equipment Replacement Guide (ERG) system which identifies, evaluates, and justifies the replacement of uneconomical equipment. The system considers such critical factors as inflation, decreasing work capability, increasing maintenance/repair and operating costs, taxes, time value of money, return on investment, salvage value, and investment tax credit. These factors are used in a system of equations which balance the costs of new equipment against the total operating costs of old equipment. The solution of the equations determines the Economic Life of equipment. Replacement of equipment at the determined Economic Life will earn the specified, required return on investment that is used in the calculation of the Economic Life.

OUTLOOK FOR COAL UTILIZATION In 1975, about 650 million tons of bituminous coal and lignite mined in the United States was used to meet 55% of the primary energy input for electric power generation and 26% of the total industrial consumption.1 Even though this amounts to only 21% of the total energy requirements, it is believed that with the declining natural gas resources and uncertainty of liquid fuel imports, coal will assume a more dominant role in suppplying our future energy needs. A regional breakdown of the coal reserves of the United States along with their characteristics is shown in Table I. At present the United Stares Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) and the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) are financing extensive research programs in advanced mining methods and energy conversion processes. The increased demand for wal which may result from these research programs may also create large-scale environmental protection problems. As more and more coal is mined the production of undesirable coal fines and dust also increases proportionally. The USBM and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) research in this field includes development in the areas of instrumentation for qualitative and quantitative analysis of wal dust, protective devices, and dust collectors. Dust control by water sprays, steam, and foam are also being investigated. Other aspects of safety in mining include developing methane drainage techniques prior to coal mining, fire and explosion prevention, and neutralization and disposal of acid mine waters. It is the belief of coal technologists that when the emphasis shifts to coal as the primary source of energy. the existing methods of mining and preparation of coal must be improved considerably to supply large quantities of quality coal for energy conversion. It is the objective of the present large-scale research financed by ERDA to produce substitute fuels from coal. Large-scale gasification pilot plants are being constructed by Bituminous Coal Research, Consolidation Coal Co., Institute of Gas Technology, and the Pittsburgh Energy Research Center to produce coal gas of natural gas standards at 1,000 psig. The processes being adopted by these pilot plants are oriented towards recovering most of the sulfur from coal by absorbing H2S and its subsequent conversion to elemental sulfur. The environmental protection standards will be strictly followed in using the results of these pilot plants to construct large-scale coal gasification plants in the latter part of the 1970's. With the increasing awareness of the need for air pollution control, considerable research is being done to minimize sulfur dioxide emission from thermal power plants. Utilization of limestone and dolomite scrubbing systems and caustic treatment of stack gases have proved to reduce sulfur and nitric oxide emissions by about 90 to 96%.3 Currently, about 22 scrubbers are in use in the United States to reduce sulfur in stack gas emission. In the long-term, it appears that optimal combinations will be developed involving both advanced coal preparation technology and wet scrubbing. The sulfur compounds are converted either to elemental sulfur of sulfuric acid. Besides the sulfur compounds, the major byproduct of the coal utilization industry is the large amount of coal ash. The Coal Research Bureau at West Virginia University has developed a practical use for coal ash as a structural material. The coal industry will undergo revolutionary changes when coal becomes the primary source of energy. New coal mining and preparation processes will be introduced to meet the ever-increasing per capita energy requirements. 2. BENEFICATION Introduction Coal preparation, like the beneficiation of ores, is also aimed at the separation of values from associated waste. Even though the unit operations involved when enriching ores and coal are similar, there are certain characteristics unique to coal preparation. Unlike the scattered and concentrated veins of underground minera1 ores, coal is distributed uniformly and very much in abundance in the coal mines. Coal occurs as the metamorphosed sedimentary deposits of vegetable matter, while metal and mineral deposits occur in great varieties of forms, structures, and origin-from igneous to sedimentary and metamorphic. The mined coal, being much more friable than mineral ores, is subjected to less intensive size reduction operations. Ores are usually ground to a very fine size for subsequent concentration, while coal is crushed to a coarser size, since considerably less liberation is needed to achieve the desired degree of separation. Since mineral matter is to a great extent discretely distributed in coal, concentration is mainly achieved by taking advantage of differences in specific gravity between clean coal and associated waste. In general, about 90% of coal is concentrated using specific gravity separation and about 10% by froth flotation. In contrast, these operations are frequently reversed in the beneficiation of ores. In coal preparation almost all fractions separated during various stages are made use of. while large amounts of gangue material are rejected in the concentration of ores. Hence, coal generally has a much lower ratio of concentration than ores. Since ore deposits are frequently more variable and mineralogically complex than coal, beneficiation of ore may require more plant flexibility and point-to-point quality control. This characteristic difference between the mineral ores and coal is attributed to the generally used one-step processing in coal as compared to the multiple-step processing of ores. Dewatering to enhance the energy content of coal is usually considered a major unit operation. Even though thickening and filtration are common for dewatering ore concentrates and cleaned coal, vibrating centrifuges and disk filters find unique application in the coal industry for achieving these types of solid-fluid separation. In coal preparation, thermal drying is carried out in separate units at the mine. While ore concentrates are usually dried at the smelter. Although the drying of ores is seldom considered dangerous, volatile matter and combustible dust are reasons why the thermal drying of coal can be hazardous. Open air storage of ores and mined coal results in partial oxidation. Unlike the oxidation of ores, the oxidation of the pyritic and carbonaceous constituents of coal together with the heat of condensation of moisture contribute to spontaneous heating and the subsequent combustion of coal in storage. Among the other significant difference between concentration of ores and coal are the weight and capacity of processing equipment. Coal processing employs less cumbersome, higher capacity units while the beneficiation of ores usually requires much more massive and frequently lower capacity equipment. Properties of Coal Which Influence Design The widely varying and heterogeneous composition of coal, due to metamorphism, determines the preparation design and uses of the resulting products. This work describes a leaching process for the conversion of high-magnesium peridotite rock, which is a chromite ore overburden, into two valuable products: magnesium salts and micro silica. Under normal leaching conditions, residue remaining after leaching is of a gelatinous nature and thus hinders the filtration process. To address this issue, oxidative leaching with the addition of H2O2 was employed, and it significantly improved the filtration kinetics. Four different approaches for H2O2 addition were tried, and they all proved effective in controlling gelation. The optimum oxidative leaching condition was 70 °C, 2 h time, 2 M H2SO4, 0.5MH2O2 and 400 RPM; under these conditions, 92% magnesium leaching efficiency was achieved. After leaching, the leach liquor obtained was purified and dried into Mg(OH)2 and MgSO4 salts. The leach residue contained mainly silica particles, with size in the 10–30 μm range. This material thus represents an attractive candidate for the production of highperformance concrete for the construction industry. The oxidative leaching process described here enabled the complete conversion of peridotite into valuable products, magnesium salts and micro silica.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has observed that many control rooms and operator compartments in the U.S. mining industry do not have filtration systems capable of maintaining low dust concentrations in these areas. In this study at a mineral processing plant, to reduce respirable dust concentrations in a control room that had no cleaning system for intake air, a filtration and pressurization system originally designed for enclosed cabs was modified and installed. This system was composed of two filtering units: one to filter outside air and one to filter and recirculate the air inside the control room. Eighty-seven percent of submicrometer particles were reduced by the system under static conditions. This means that greater than 87 percent of respirable dust particles should be reduced as the particle-size distribution of respirable dust particles is greater than that of submicrometer particles, and filtration systems usually are more efficient in capturing the larger particles. A positive pressure near 0.02 inches of water gauge was produced, which is an important component of an effective system and minimizes the entry of particles, such as dust, into the room. The intake airflow was around 118 cfm, greater than the airflow suggested by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) for acceptable indoor air quality. After one year, the loading of the filter caused the airflow to decrease to 80 cfm, which still produces acceptable indoor air quality. Due to the loading of the filters, the reduction efficiency for submicrometer particles under static conditions increased to 94 percent from 87 percent.

Borates have been mined in the desert areas of California and Nevada for more than 100 years. To about 1890, playa surface mining provided the chief sources of boron minerals. Underground mining of colemanite and later of borax and kernite was predominate until about twenty years ago. Open pit mining of the large deposits of borax and kernite near Boron, California has been most significant for the past twenty years. Mining of colemanite in the Ryan, California area, near Death Valley, began in 1907. Following the discovery of the large deposits in the Boron area (about 1957), mining in the Death Valley area became nearly nonexistent. Only small tonnages were mined for special uses. Little mining was done in the Boraxo area near Ryan. The first claim was made in about 1915 In 1960 the area became the property of the Kern County Land Company, which was acquired by Tenneco Oil Company in 1967. In 1976 the various borate properties and claims in this region were acquired by American Borate Corporation. The open pit mine is now approximately 400 feet (121.9 m) deep, 3000 feet (914.4 m) long and 1000 feet (304.8 m) wide. The borates in the Boraxo pit consist primarily of three minerals. These are about 50% coiemanite (C2B6O11' 5H2O), about 40% probertite (NaCaB5O9.5H2O), and 10% ulexite (NaCaBcO9.8H2O). The colemanite, along with boric acid and high-grade coiemanite ore from Turkey provide the only sodium-free borates for production of textile grade fiberglas. When heated to its decomposition temperature, colemanite decrepitates to a fine powder. This provides the basis for the concentration process. The gangue minerals in this deposit are primarily calcite and clays, including bentonite. The ore body has a very low arsenic content.which is a desirable feature. Test work had been done with samples prior to the results discussed herein. This paper will discuss results of test work which were the basis for erection of a plant, and the subsequent plant operations.

Block cave mining method poses unique ventilation challenges compared to other underground metal mining methods. This research study focuses on assessing the airflow behavior in regulated airflow distribution systems by developing a 1:100 scaled block cave experimental model and a numerical model. This study also investigated gas flow behavior under various airflow conditions. Based on our findings, we observed that reduction in particle size and porosity of caved materials, decrease in cave footprint, and closure of undercut drifts would increase cave airflow resistance. The increased airflow is found beneficial for gas dilution regardless of its source locations, while the regulated airflow distribution system might deteriorate gas dilution situation when the source is located in the extraction drifts.

"Electromagnetic based proximity detection systems (PDSs) are utilized on mining machinery to protect workers from being pinned or struck. These systems generate magnetic fields covering the space around a machine, and a miner-wearable component (MWC) detects the field. The PDS determines the distance of miners relative to the machine based on the detected magnetic flux density in the magnetic field. This information is used to establish warning and shutdown zones around the machine. Maintaining a stable magnetic field is essential for system accuracy. However, components used to generate magnetic fields can be influenced by temperature changes. Depending on ventilation conditions and seasonal alternation, a PDS can be subject to significant temperature fluctuation. To better understand and quantify this phenomenon, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed an experimental apparatus to study the influence of temperature on magnetic field generator circuits used in PDSs. Results from the study show that the electric current through a generator can be influenced by both ambient and internal temperatures, modifying the magnetic field that is produced. These findings show that temperature can significantly influence the ability of PDSs, used in underground coal mines, to accurately determine a worker’s position in relation to mining machine. INTRODUCTION Electromagnetic based proximity detection systems have been developed to reduce machine-related accidents in underground coal mines. The first proximity detection systems installed in underground coal mines were developed for continuous mining machines (CMMs). There are five of such proximity detection systems that are approved for use in U.S. mines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2013; Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2015). There are several basic components that interact within an electromagnetic proximity detection system (PDS). A PDS includes two main elements: a set of generators to create magnetic fields around a CMM and a set of magnetic probes to detect the fields. These systems can determine if a miner is located at a safe distance from the machine based on the detected magnetic flux density. Stability of the magnetic fields is essential for system accuracy."

"Western Coal" in this paper is limited to those deposits of subbituminous coal and lignite in the States of Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota. The characteristics of the coal are discussed as well as the history of mining and current mining operations for steam coal. The future of the region is tied closely to the ultimate conversion of coal to oil and gas products. Problems of industrial water supply and environmental considerations are covered together with a brief review of current legislation's actions affecting strip mining.

The extraction of nickel has been carried out by the hollow fiber membrane technique using D2EHPA as the mobile carrier from the manganese nodule leach liquor after separation of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Co(II). The experiments were designed according to central composite design (CCD), which is a response surface methodology. The process parameters used for the experimental design were: pH, concentration of D2EHPA in the membrane phase, flow rate and H2SO4 concentration in the strip solution. Based on the analysis of variance, a reduced quadratic model was found to best fit the experimental data. The process parameters were optimized to maximize the nickel flux and the optimized conditions were flow rate: 630 mL/min; pH: 6.37; D2EHPA: 1.15 mol/L (1,150 mol/m3) and H2SO4: 2.39% (430.2 mol/m3), for a maximum nickel flux of 7.08 x 10-5 mol/m2.s, which was in good agreement with the actual Ni flux of 6.99 x 10-5 mol/m2.s.

The Cannon mine, located in north-central Washington is mining gold hosted in silicified Eocene-age arkosic sediments arrayed along a regional strike-slip fault system. Branches of the Eagle Creek fault have broken the Chumstick Formation into blocks and wedges, and have caused intense deformation of stratigraphy in the mine. Mineralization at the Cannon mine (B-Reef) and O-Reef (L-O mine) is a bulk silicification with high grade cross-cutting veins containing principally electrum, silver sulfosalts and pyrite in a gangue of quartz, adularia and calcite. Orebodies have very irregular shapes, but tend to follow stratigraphy and high-angle pre-mineral fault breccias and splays developed adjacent to the major faults. Both B-Reef and O-Reef occur at significant bends in the regional trend of major fault strands. Mean gold grades decrease upward from near sea level to the 300 m elevation at the Cannon mine. A new discovery, the A-Reef is hosted by a moderately dipping structure which is at a low angle to bedding. Fluid inclusion studies of B-Reef ore zones indicate dilute ore-bearing fluids boiled at temperatures between 185 and 2850 C at a depth of 1 km. Many ore zones are bounded by sheared mudstone and claystone and a much broader halo of argillic alteration comprising illite, smectite and sericite. Trace and major element analysis by ICP-ES for 33 elements, LECO for S, Hg by CVAA and gold by AA-FA shows dispersion patterns hundreds of meters outward from the known orebodies in the Cannon mine. Geometric mean comparisons, hierarchical R-mode cluster analysis and single element spatial plots show that Hg, As, Sb, S and K/Al compose a suite of elements which are significantly dispersed away from, and increase toward mineralization. Ba, Ca, Na, Mn, V and Zr decrease toward mineralization. The suite is more selective than gold with respect to known mineralization within the exploration area.

The I-35 Capital Expressway (CapEx) Central Drainage Tunnels will serve as a stormwater collection system for the forthcoming I-35 Capital Express Central reconstruction project through downtown Austin, Texas. The schematic level concept design included three tunnels, 10 to 14 ft ID, totaling 26,000 LF. Constructability reviews during design development indicated issues with the concept design including phasing of construction, conicts with future retaining walls, staging area concerns, and signicant mixed face tunneling. The design was updated to mitigate these risks. The revised design includes two tunnels, both 22-ft ID and totaling 33,000 LF, that will be mined almost entirely in rock.

This research, sponsored at Stanford Research Institute by the Grand Junction Operations Office of the U.S, Atomic Energy Commission, was an outgrowth of the concern that presently-known ore reserves may be inadequate to meet the projected demands of nuclear power reactors. The original program at SRI was to design a comprehensive geological information system and use it to store and analyze the very great quantity of data needed to estimate uranium ore reserves. Study of the problem showed that it could be solved only by use of modern electronic data processing techniques, so such a comprehensive system was designed and tested. The system test was satisfactory, but input lead time and total expense were shown to be too great for the system to be practicable for the AEC under present circumstances. Thus, based on results of the earlier research, a specialized and simplified procedure for predicting approximate uranium ore reserves was devised. The prediction is based on general geology of specific area cells of the earth, in order to provide complete volume coverage; the strata in these ores are evaluated for uranium ore favorability on the basis of a few selected criteria in order to allow rapid data input. Since the bulk of U.S. reserves are in clastic host rocks only such strata are considered in this work. This paper describes the structure and some details of the resource system and how it was tested in rn area of the western United States.
