"Above ground, elevated belt conveyors that span more than 200 m (656 ft) between support points can cross valleys, rivers, forests and buildings with a minimal footprint. The cable bridge conveyor (CBC) is a new type of suspension bridge based belt conveyor system that has long spans between support points. It combines a typical belt conveyor and an improved simple suspension bridge to form a conveyor bridge. The improved simple suspension bridge places a widened bridge deck directly on suspended cables, without the need for high truss towers. The benefits include reduced cost and increase aerodynamic stability compared to conventional suspension bridges. The CBC’s compatibility with current belt conveyors allows versatility in application.A belt conveyor is a ubiquitous material handling system. Conveyors can be placed directly on ground or elevated above ground by support structures. Considerations of cost, design, environment, civil work, safety and process requirements are all factors in choosing the ground-based or elevated conveyors (Zhang, 2014). The ground-based conveyor has the lowest structural cost when the conveyor is placed on an existing road. Maintenance access is easy and straightforward. Compared to the groundbased conveyor, the elevated conveyor can cross existing buildings and structures, give passage to traffic beneath the conveyor, has a smaller footprint and requires less civil work to pass mountainous areas. The drawback of the elevated conveyor is higher structural cost, which can be compared with savings in civil work and other benefits. Conventional elevated conveyors are supported by rigid truss-type structures, with a typical span of 15 to 25 m (50 to 82 ft) between concrete support bents or steel trestles. Triangular truss, using steel pipes instead of hot rolled steel sections, is more efficient. The typical span of a triangular truss-supported conveyor is around 30 to 40 m (100 to 130 ft), while the weight is about 10 percent less than conventional box truss with a shorter span (Jennings, 2013).Long-span elevated structures based on suspension bridge is another step forward in increasing the distance between support bents, reaching 100 to 400 m (330 to 1,312 ft) and beyond. The wide distance between the support points of an elevated conveyor offers unique benefits. The conveyor can cross rivers, valleys, highways, forests and other obstacles with minimal footprint and reduced civil work. An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [ ] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m%-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [ ] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). Cold compressive strength (CCS) and apparent porosity (AP) of pellets are essential properties regarding the burden of blast furnaces. The optimal required values for industries are 2.5 KN CCS and 21% AP. Blaine fineness and firing temperature are the decisive parameters analyzed here. During firing, microstructure phases such as silicate, hematite, and pore are formed. The phase’s grain density during induration influences the pellet’s CCS and AP. The influence of the factors over the response is evaluated by I-optimal (response surface methodology) design. Blaine fineness, firing temperature, pore phase grain density (PPGD), silicate phase grain density (SPGD), and hematite phase grain density (HPGD) affect the CCS and AP of pellets. The RSM-I-optimal predicted responses with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.89 for CCS and 0.91 for AP of iron ore pellets. Optimal conditions were Blaine no. = 1668 cm2/g, 1250 °C firing temperature, PPGD value 90 no/mm2, SPGD value 250 no/ mm2, and HPGD value 490 no/mm2, with 4.5 KN CCS 27%. The induration processes were investigated through statistical design of experiments for process optimization. Statistical analysis indicated the direct and interactive influence over CCS and AP. In this study, RSM-I-optimal modeling is used for iron ore pellets processing. The I-optimal prediction could be applied to make the process economical because information is obtained through fewer experiments.

According to the Markowitz portfolio theory the value of a diversified portfolio is higher than the sum of the parts of a portfolio, which is an important consideration for the correct valuation. This is valid for real estate portfolios as well as for mining assets (or enterprises). This paper analyses the application of the portfolio theory to a diversified portfolio of assets in the real estate industry and draws conclusions on further research work to be done in the minerals industry. The volume of real estate transactions is increasing over recent years. As such, the nature of those transactions is constantly changing and in some cases portfolios become more heterogeneous as they are composed of different property categories, e.g. locations and types of use. This makes their economic evaluation more difficult. This paper focuses on the acquisition of a fairly heterogeneous real estate property portfolio purchased by “Commerz Real” in Germany in Q4 2019. For economic evaluation the widely used Markowitz portfolio theory (Markowitz, 1952) was applied. It was investigated whether diversification effects could achieve added value in the form of a reduction in risk compared to the sum of their individual components. As a result the findings of this research could be applied to other heterogeneous real estate transactions and even to mine property portfolio or PPP1 project portfolio transactions.

This paper explains and discusses a computer program developed to determine the ventilation design parameters for complex auxiliary ventilation systems such as those found in the construction of long excavations with multiple headings. The program is based on the principle of partitioning the system into segments of finite length, and formulating and solving the resulting networks recursively. The application of the program is illustrated by the detailed solution of an auxiliary ventilation system proposed for the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) at the Yucca Mountain project, Nevada.

High CO2 fluxes associated with reclaimed coal mine spoils pose an environmental hazard where such sites are used for building. CO2 concentrations in excess of 25% have been reported in homes constructed on or down gradient of such spoils. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a mitigation trench used at one mine site on CO2 fluxes across the trench using chamber?based trace gas measurement. LI8100 automated CO2 flux system was used to measure CO2 fluxes from 32 sample points located across a deep mitigation trench on June 8 and 9. The maximum recorded fluxes were 7.29 and 8.18 µmol/m2/s, with averages of 4.15 and 5.50 µmol/m2/s, up and down-dip respectively. These preliminary results show CO2 flux is higher up-hill than down-hill at 95% significant level. This work shows that flux measurement can be used to investigate CO2 migration on reclaimed mine land. Further work is necessary to allow geostatistical modeling of the spatial variability of CO2 fluxes over reclaimed coal mine spoils. Knowledge gained would assist mining practitioners and regulators in reclamation planning for envisaged post-mining land uses.

In this work, the crystallization of Carnallite from waste brine of Qaidam Basin in Qinghai province was studied based on NaCl-KCl-MgCl2-H2O phase diagram. According to this study, a new crystallization pathway to recycling waste brine was developed. The carnallite salt was formed by using this technology during the waste brine evaporation. The experiment data shows that 5 tons of waste brine was required to form one ton of the carnallite. The average grade of carnallite prepared by using this procedure was about 19.40% of KCl, 16.92% of NaCl, 28.80% of MgCl2, and 0.82% of CaSO4. This study provides an opportunity to utilization of the waste brine.

Jetti Resources has developed a catalyst which overcomes the passivation of primary sulfides, enhancing the heap leach recovery of copper from chalcopyrite. It is important to emphasize that heap leaching of copper sulfides, whether with or without the Jetti catalyst, is a biooxidative process. We have demonstrated the efficacy of Jetti’s technology in bioreactors, with a chalcopyrite-dominant porphyry ore. In the presence of Jetti’s technology, optimal bioleaching conditions significantly increase copper extraction by 2.6 times that of the baseline.

The recent depressant research is summarized, and a new kind of depressant (SCO) has been put forward in this article. Using Na-oleate as a collector and SCO as a depressant, separation of dolomite and phosphate was studied. When SCO was added in the concentration range of 80 g/t to 2kg/t at pH 9.5 ± 0.2, dolomite was absolutely depressed, and apatite kept its floatability. Interestingly, in the mixture of phosphate and dolomite, the dolomite floated. The reasons for such a behavior are investigated through flotation and electrokinetic studies. It was found that the adsorption of dissolved species on dolomite and phosphate resulted in reverse flotation. A concentration of 31.59% P205 and 83.87% recovery of P205 was obtained from the mixture of phosphate and dolomite (2:1) with 26.6% P205 using 210 g/t SCO and Na-oleate 4.93*10-5 M at pH 9.

Mine workers are continuously exposed to a host of nonfatal stressors and potentially fatal hazards: noise exposure, excessive vibration, poor air quality, toxicant exposure, ignition of combustible gases, equipment-related accidents, and thermal heat stress. Wearable or portable sensors and contextual analytics provide a platform to unobtrusively collect and fuse multimodal health and safety data in real time to compute both acute safety and longitudinal health insights. This paper presents preliminary trial results, conducted by Simtars, VigiLife, Inc., and Queensland Mines Rescue Service, of the application of wearable sensors to monitor heat stress and other vital biometrics for mines rescue personnel.

Up to 3 million tons of automotive shredder residue (ASR) is generated annually in United States. Plastics are the most valuable component of the ASR material making up approximately 25% of the total weight. In order to reuse these plastics, a selective process is required to separate each plastic, with very high purity and favorable economics. One separation technique, which may be able to selectively recover the plastics from ASR, is flotation. The preliminary flotation results have demonstrated that acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and polycarbonate (PC) can be selectively separated from the model ASR feed, the PC/ABS/PA 66 system, by appropriate control of the surface chemistry.

Change Acceleration Process (“CAP”) One of the tools General Electric developed has been used successfully by companies around the world in a wide variety of industries. This tool, named Change Acceleration Process (“CAP”), is designed to improve acceptance of change. Acceptance is the method by which the creative energies of the workforce can be fully tapped. Over time, every employee receives CAP training at least once, and in many instances three (3) or four (4) times, and will work on one or more High Performance Teams. Thus, BPI can achieve and maintain its goals. Botswana is a mining-dominated sub-Saharan country. Workforces are characterised by poorly educated operators and front line supervisors, with equipment and management to 1st World standards. Poor communication, ignorance of business objectives, inability to meet targets, and lack of problem-solving capacity are the norm. Training leads to high expectations and is of concern to management as a source of dissatisfaction, despite the long-term benefits higher skills have for mine viability. The aims of a technical training programme are presented with various models and approaches being implemented at operations in Botswana. These are used to construct a series of guidelines for technical training initiatives.

Commercialisation of outcomes from research projects is a process often poorly understood and managed, but has the potential to achieve significant benefits for the industry and community as a whole. JKTech Pty Ltd was established in 1986 to transfer viable research outcomes from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) at The University of Queensland, Australia. This paper describes successful and unsuccessful examples of commercialisation by JKTech over the years, and draws some conclusions as to the factors that contribute to success and failure in technology transfer.

1.0 PROLOG Since the "end" of the Cold War, revolutionary new research and commercial remote sensing capabilities are being developed that will dramatically change the way we map the earth and address its environmental problems. The technology challenge is not the growth of new environmental remote sensing technologies themselves. It is, rather, how these new innovative observing systems can be accepted and used to the benefit of both the regulatory and the mining communities in the light of present concerns about unknown risks of discovery and liability. Strip mining has played a key role in the production of coal used to produce energy in this country. About 56 percent of the 1.3 x 106 hectares (3.2 x 106 acres) that had been disturbed by surface mining as of 1965 can be attributed to stripping (Udall, 1967). The runoff from these stripped areas is usually heavily polluted with high concentrations of total dissolved solids, iron, aluminum, manganese, sulfates, and has low pH values with high acidity. Another problem of a most serious nature in our large cities is the volume of treated solids to be disposed of after sewage treatment. Chicago is presently producing about 664 metric tons/day of dry weight solids (Horn and Earles, 1968). Disposal methods most commonly used include lagooning, incineration, and landfilling. The high cost of land in an urban community is prohibitive of lagoon storage. Incineration and landfill disposal create air and water pollution problems. Many countries including Australia, England and Israel have long realized the value of sewage solids if they are recycled back to the land. In the United States, the value of such solids in reclaiming strip mined land has been recognized by relatively few people. This paper is concerned with the use of anaerobically digested sludge to reclaim strip mined land.

INTRODUCTION The Bunker Hill mine, located at Kellogg, ID, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, has been a major pro¬ducer of lead-zinc-silver ore since 1887. Since its dis¬covery, it has produced over 25 401 171 t (28 million st) of ore from 20 to 25 veins and ore zones. The mine now covers an area of approximately 1.609 km (1 mile) in length and 0.8 km (1/2 mile) in width and extends from 1097 m (3600 ft) above sea level to 488 m (1600 ft) below sea level. Production is presently at a rate of 1542 t/d (1700 stpd). During 1965, a new stoping method, the Bunker Hill pillar system, was developed to enable the profitable mining of large, low-grade zinc ore bodies. The system was specifically designed to in¬corporate the Atlas Copco T26GH rubber-tired loaders. High productivities were achieved, and the method was adapted for mining the higher grade stopes where large timber square sets are utilized. This results in nearly 100% extraction. GEOLOGY The area encompassing the Bunker Hill mine lies immediately south of the Osburn fault, a major east-west striking, deep-seated strike slip fault which is the dominant structural feature in the Coeur d'Alene district. The Bunker Hill forms a series of veins and mineralized zones which occur as link structures, tension fractures, and breccia zones in folded, interbedded argillaceous quartzites of the Revett and St. Regis formations of the Precambrian belt series. The Rosco ore body is predominantly a zinc ore body above the Cate fault, which is presently known to occur from the 13 level. [elevation 488 m (1600 ft)] to the 1600 level [elevation 304 m (1000 ft) ]. These ore bodies are stringer zones with at least one dominant 1.8 to 4.5 m (6 to 15 ft) wide band of ore. They dip 0.09 to 0.26 rad (5° to 15°) steeper than the local 0.61 rad (35°) dip of the Cate fault, and also deviate 0.26 to 0.52 rad (15° to 30°) in strike from the Cate. Because of the flat dip and fractured weak hanging wall, normal cut-and-fill mining has not proven practical in this ore body. The mechanized timber methods described in the next section and the Bunker Hill pillar system are the mining methods successfully used. The algorithms for the mathematical modeling to predict productivity of underground room-and-pillar mining systems are well known and documented. These algorithms consider the time-varying relationships between mining equipment for a given geometry of operations as well as other constraints. This paper presents WebConSim, a newly developed, Web-based, user-friendly computer simulation tool for the Windows environment. The simulator is easily customized for use by field engineers, planning engineers, and management and will help mine operators plan the optimum mining sequence for different mine geometries and equipment layouts. Program output includes production data and equipment utilization indices, as well as time driven event chains that can be used for virtual reality presentations.

This paper explores the age-old concept of mine-mill reconciliation from a new perspective. Advances in reconciliation processes have been slow to materialize because in the quest for “rightness”, engineers, geologists and metallurgists have become entrenched in their viewpoints, dutifully performing to the metrics and expectations imposed upon them by the siloed organization. Moreover, reconciliation has not been viewed as a primary value creator, but an accounting non-value added task. In reality, the knowledge from reconciliation can significantly enhance yields. Critical review of the direct variables (tons, grade, etc.) and other less-obvious variables (incentives, communication, etc.) reveal a complex web of barriers to be cleared by management in order to realize benefits. Also, mineralogical reconciliation methods may offer renewed faith in the process.
